This time Dorothy felt a touch on her arm. She wheeled quickly to face a tall, slender young fellow of twenty-two or three. As she stared at him, half indignant, half wondering, she saw sincere distress in his brown eyes, and in the lines of his pleasant face. Hat in hand, he waited anxiously for an answer to his question, while the crowd of holiday shoppers poured through the aisles about them.

Dorothy’s eyes softened, then danced. “It seems to me,� she said, “that you have the wires twisted—it’s not I who’ve escaped, but you! Run along now and find your keeper. You’re evidently in need of one!�

“Your change and package, miss,� the impersonal voice of the haberdashery clerk intervened and Dorothy turned back to the counter.

Once more Dorothy turned swiftly toward him but when she spoke her eyes and voice were serious. “Do you really mean to say you think you’re speaking to Janet Jordan? Because—�

“My dear—what are you trying to tell me?� He broke in impatiently. “I certainly ought to know the girl I’m going to marry!�

Dorothy nodded slowly. “I agree with you—you ought to—but then, you see, you don’t!�

The young man crushed his soft felt hat in his hands and took a step nearer to her. “Look here—what is the matter with you? I know you’ve been through a lot, but—� He broke off abruptly, a gleam of horror and suspicion in his honest eyes. “Janet! What have they done to you?�

Dorothy laid a firm hand on his arm. “Sh! Be quiet—listen to me.� Then she added gently—“I am not Janet Jordan, your fiancee.�

“You’re not�!�

“No. My name is Dorothy Dixon—and I’m Janet’s first cousin.�

Einziger persönlicher Stolperstein war für mich dass die Autorin sich für den so beliebten Present Tense entschieden hat und dabei leider so nach und nach in ziemlich alle denkbaren erzählerischen Zeitfallen tappt die dieser so mit sich bringt, wenn man mit aus dem üblicheren Past Tense übernommenen Formeln und Wendungen arbeitet. Aber das ist ja eine stehende Kritik die ich an fast allen Autoren, welche sich für diese Erzählform entschieden haben, üben muss.

While it's not as bad as I thought, it's still pretty bad.
King draws out the first act with a lot of hinting at "something" having happened in the past, and while that past in parts leads up to become crucial in the climax, the whole CSA subplot feels unnecessary and adds very little to the story at hand, I could have easily done without.
In the second act King teases us with a supernatural element, and here the story really gains momentum, but then he unfortunately completely dispells thses elements in the far too drawn out third act.

In the end, there's a few effective creepy scenes to have had, but overall it's a tiresome read that drags along too often, especially the final five or six chapters after the story should have ended, which do nothing but offer a harebrained explanation for the apparent supernatural encounter the character faces, are a drag to read.

King greatest weakness has always been his endings, but damn, in Gerald's Game it's so bad he managed to lose all the points he made inspite of how badly written/set-up the story is, because there are moments of true atmosphere and a feeling of impending dooom in the middle.

King greatest weakness has always been his endings, but damn, in Gerald's Game it's so bad he managed to lose all the points he made inspite of how badly written/set-up the story is, because there are moments of true atmosphere and a feeling of impending dooom in the middle.

Triming the book down to novella length could have made this nothing short of brilliant, instead of the hot mess it ended up as.

Emrys starts out by making the heroine and her brother the presumed sole survivors of the notorious Innsmouth community. A place inhabited by humans which long ago took a different evolutionary path, it got raided, in one of those nation wide panics humans are so prone of, and all of its populace either outright murdered or put away in concentration camps first. There Aphra and her brother got kept till the government forgot them, and the camps found reuse when America fell in the grip of yet another nation wide panic, this time focusing their fears on Asian Americans.
Emrys talks only in passing about the Shoa - although her Innsmouth folk do seem an awful lot like a allegory on the faith of the jewish in Germany - and at a bit more length about the imprisonment of Asian Americans when the nation entered into the war.

In Lovecraft's cosmos the horror works by invoking the unknown, in Emrys' work the unknown is what we have to turn to for comfort because the horror comes from the, not quite outspoken, known crimes humans are capable of committing against each other. Here Emrys, while using a completly different angle, fits herself seamless in with H. P.'s work. There's a constant atmosphere of threat drawing itself through the story, there's Aphra's, the heroines, less than unreasoning fear of the governments attention on her race, and there's more so the whole burden of the memory of crimes committed against her people and her adoptive family in the camps, crimes the extent of which we can only guess at, looming just beyond our preception and understanding they become much as incompehensible for us as the Lovecraftian Gods themselves. The way women are viewed and how they are expected to behave in '40s America, what they are allowed to learn, that is another part of the story, there's a low key feminist outrage at how men treat women in general and POC women in special as "the other" to her tale.
And if all this wasn't enough to make for a disturbing setting, there's the Elders of Aphra's race, who see their sole surviving children only as vessels meant to bear future generations ... I don't know which part of that concept I found scarier, the idea of her family viewing Aphra as a mere birthing machine or Aphra's easy acceptance of that idea...

Unfortunately, the positives of the story get weighed down by a very slow moving narrative, and a habit of the characters to just jump ahead in their reasoning and sometimes talk about - well, I have no idea what they where meant to talk about in those instances because we are not prone to anybody elses thoughts than Aphra's. The story would have been better, in my opinion, if Emrys had decided to focus it either on the characters, and the all to present idea of "who's next in this game of attempted genocide" or on its Pulp roots as manifested in a wild chase after some assumed russian spy who might have aquired knowledge of how to switch bodies (the latter of which suffers from not getting enough exposure, the former from this pulpy sidetrack robbing it of seriousness).

It's not without merits of its own, but at the end stands a story to slow treading to be entirely entertaining, yet unfortunately lacking the depth to be as thought provoking as it could have been.]]> 3.96 2017 Winter Tide

As such, with America currently ruled by a man that openly fans the flames of public fear of "foreigners" and "foreign religions" - i.e. any and all that do not fit the mold of the "Christian" worldview of a bunch of white men - the topic of her novel is not missing relevance. Placing that tale in the midst of the Lovecraftian cosmos, and trying to give us a perspective from the others side of things, feels quite apropos, too, seeing how H. Unfortunately, the positives of the story get weighed down by a very slow moving narrative, and a habit of the characters to just jump ahead in their reasoning and sometimes talk about - well, I have no idea what they where meant to talk about in those instances because we are not prone to anybody elses thoughts than Aphra's. The story would have been better, in my opinion, if Emrys had decided to focus it either on the characters, and the all to present idea of "who's next in this game of attempted genocide" or on its Pulp roots as manifested in a wild chase after some assumed russian spy who might have aquired knowledge of how to switch bodies (the latter of which suffers from not getting enough exposure, the former from this pulpy sidetrack robbing it of seriousness).

It's not without merits of its own, but at the end stands a story to slow treading to be entirely entertaining, yet unfortunately lacking the depth to be as thought provoking as it could have been.

Der erste Band aus der Damona King Reihe.
Ich wĂĽrde LĂĽgen nicht zu sagen dass die Geschichte nicht sehr gut gealtert ist, sie bekommt aber einen Stern mehr aus Nostalgie.

Da ich gerade wieder ein KU Abo habe kehre ich ein wenig in meine Jugend zurĂĽck, mit John Sinclair Romanen. Ich habe diese um die 200er herum angefangen zu Lesen. dann ein paar Jahre ausgesetzt und danach festgestellt das der Sinclair Kosmos in meiner Abwesenheit etwas ausgeufert ist was die Freude am Lesen nahm.

Diese Problem haben die 2000er Bände die ich soweit gelesen habe nun nicht mehr, die neuen Autoren und Autorinnen haben sich auf die Stärke der frühen Romane zurückbesonnen, halten den Personenkreis um Sinclair überschaubar und liefern frische, unterhaltsame Ideen.

Der vorliegende Band von Eric Wolfe sticht da besonders hervor, was zunächst witzig amüsant anmutet, John erwacht mit Gedächtnisproblemen im Hyde Park, entwickelt sich schnell zum temporeichen Drama bei dem man mit John und seine Freunden mitfiebert in einem tödlichen Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.

Liked it a lot.
It's a well written crime / werewolf novel, that gets only marred by a very strangely placed sex scene where the main character is suffering from blood loss, yeah, questions arise from that.
