<![CDATA[Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work]]> 8245019
Over the past decade, Snakes in Suits has become the definitive book on how to discover and defend yourself against psychopaths in the office. Now, Dr. Paul Babiak and Dr. Robert D. Hare return with a revised and updated edition of their essential guide.

All of us at some point have—or will—come into contact with psychopathic individuals. The danger they present may not be readily apparent because of their ability to charm, deceive, and manipulate. Although not necessarily criminal, their self-serving nature frequently is destructive to the organizations that employ them. So how can we protect ourselves and our organizations in a business climate that offers the perfect conditions for psychopaths to thrive?

In Snakes in Suits, Hare, an expert on the scientific study of psychopathy, and Babiak, an industrial and organizational psychologist and a leading authority on the corporate psychopath, examine the role of psychopaths in modern corporations and provide the tools employers can use to avoid and deal with them. Together, they have developed the B-Scan 360, a research tool designed specifically for business professionals.

Dr. Babiak and Dr. Hare reveal the secret lives of psychopaths, explain the ways in which they manipulate and deceive, and help you to see through their games. The rapid pace of today’s corporate environment provides the perfect breeding ground for these "snakes in suits" and this newly revised and updated classic gives you the insight, information, and power to protect yourself and your company before it’s too late.]]>

<![CDATA[The Wullie Glass Notebooks: Second Chance]]> 28510541 450 Jack Laing K 5
Wullie’s new life as a Sar, a member of the universal law enforcement organisation, is packed with intrigue, danger and humour. Laing masterfully combines the gritty realism of police procedure with the boundless creativity of space adventure, creating a universe teeming with fascinating characters and breathtaking locales. From calming riots on a distant planet to battling terrorism on a cosmic scale, Wullie’s cases are as thrilling as they are diverse. Each new setting introduces us to compelling personalities, and Laing’s skill at developing these characters makes it impossible not to care deeply about their fates.

Speaking of caring this book had me emotionally invested like few others. At one point, I couldn’t wait until the next day to share my reaction to a particularly gripping scene with a friend. I needed to talk about it immediately! Laing has a knack for weaving characters and situations so vivid that I was swept up in every adventure. Pride, heartbreak, elation, horror, indignation this book takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, with moments that make you want to high-five whoever’s closest to you in celebration.

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring distant galaxies and immersing yourself in lives beyond our own, Second Chance is the book for you. When Laing’s next book becomes available my Kindle is getting my undivided attention, as I devour every sentence without letting real life intrude. <![CDATA[The Wullie Glass Notebooks: Recruit]]> 26252734 When he wakes up he is twenty five again and faced with a choice. Join the universal law enforcement organisation that has salvaged him - or live out his life in a new identity - anywhere but home. He chooses to stay a cop and finds himself on a two year training programme to become a patrol officer amongst the stars as part of a federal force known simply as the Sar.
Along the way he finds he has many transferable skills - not the least being his ability to fly the patrol ships between galaxies. As he meets more and more people from alien races he fast comes to the conclusion that being a cop is pretty much the same everywhere.
This book traces his progress as he goes back to training school and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. It floats between his experiences of policing in 1980's London and the challenges of maintaining order across the rest of the known universe. It introduces the concepts of universal law and "between" technology which makes it possible to travel across the vastness of space.
It is a blend of fast paced adventure and the more mundane incidents dealt with daily by cops everywhere. There is an undercurrent of humour throughout the book and along the way he finds true love.

Jack Laing’s Recruit took me on an unforgettable journey, seamlessly transporting me to a universe so vivid and believable I didn’t want to leave. Wullie Glass, a character brimming with depth and heart, pulled me into his extraordinary world of intergalactic law enforcement as he entered Sar training and kept me utterly absorbed from start to finish.

Wullie, a seasoned police officer approaching retirement, sees his life flipped upside down on his last night patrol. A fatal injury leads to a miraculous rebirth given a second chance at life, the Sar, a universal law enforcement agency, offers him a choice: stay a cop and join their ranks or start a fresh life elsewhere. His decision to embrace this new chapter as an intergalactic police officer sparks a thrilling adventure that bridges 1980s London policing with the boundless challenges of enforcing universal law.

From alien encounters to the intricacies of ‘between technology that makes intergalactic travel possible, Recruit beautifully blends adventure the everyday realities of a cop’s life humour, bureaucracy, and humanity included. Wullie’s transferable skills and quick-thinking shine as he navigates an entirely new world, proving that being a cop is universal, whether it’s on Earth or across galaxies.

Jack Laing’s debut novel introduces us to a richly imagined universe full of fascinating characters, profound moments, and plenty of heart. Wullie’s journey is peppered with humour, drama and romance. The supporting cast is just as compelling, with each character leaving a lasting impression and making me want to know what lies ahead for them too.

This is another great instalment in the Secundus Sulpicius Mysteries of Ancient Rome series that I did not want to put down very inconvenient when I had real-life tasks to attend to!

The Case of Fama plunges us back into Secundus’s world, where he faces his most intricate and dangerous mystery yet. While unmasking a plot that threatens his father’s career and a loyal citizen’s freedom, Secundus must also confront the ghosts of his recent battle, fighting as part of the Roman army a trauma that lingers beneath the surface of these pages.

As if unravelling this maze of deception weren’t enough, Fama herself the embodiment of rumour and fame casts a shadow over Secundus’s investigation, complicating matters. This story is an incredible tapestry of intrigue, murder and political gamesmanship, woven with a poignant undercurrent of personal struggle. And when you think it can’t get more gripping, a romantic subplot sweetens the pages, striking a balance between the brutality of violence and tender humanity.

From the richly detailed world to the multidimensional characters, this book is everything I look for in a great story. Mulhern has ability to craft an ancient Rome so vivid that it feels as if you step through the pages and enter his world every time you open his books. The twists, the tension, the emotional depth it kept me hooked as I tried to piece together all the clues we discovered along the way.

I can’t wait to read the next Secundus instalment - The Case of Mercury. Although, I might need to wait until I have a few days with a clear schedule because once I start I’m not going to want to stop until the end of the final page.]]>

Back in Rome, as we progress through Secundus’s investigation into the murder and thefts from temples, the tension builds as each new clue is discovered. <![CDATA[Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History]]> 43268244

In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all.

S. C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Although readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled backward by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands. So effective were the Comanches that they forced the creation of the Texas Rangers and account for the advent of the new weapon specifically designed to fight them: the six-gun.

The war with the Comanches lasted four decades, in effect holding up the development of the new American nation. Gwynne’s exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads—a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being.

Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower-blue eyes who was kidnapped by Comanches from the far Texas frontier in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the "White Squaw" who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend.

S. C. Gwynne’s account of these events is meticulously researched, intellectually provocative, and, above all, thrillingly told.

Although exceptional at his job, Rabbit is not without faults. In a spectacular failure twenty years ago, he lost both the menorah of the second temple and his hot-headed mentee, Aaron. So, when new evidence reveals the menorah’s reappearance in 6th century Constantinople, Rabbit seizes the chance for redemption.

Grief-stricken, Brett can barely make sense of her mother's decision-her childhood dreams don't resemble her ambitions at age thirty-four in the slightest. Some seem impossible. How can she possibly have a relationship with a father who died seven years ago? Other goals (Be an awesome teacher!) would require her to reinvent her entire future.

As Brett reluctantly embarks on a perplexing journey in search of her adolescent dreams, one thing becomes clear. Sometimes life's sweetest gifts can be found in the most unexpected places.]]>

At the some time, he sends Kieran Kennedy, his executive officer, to stand up and train a new international Charlie Squadron in the U.K. While Wolf bends the rules to protect the reservation on the home front, the squadrons track opium with a mysterious United Nations connection out of Afghanistan to a new “French Connection in Marseilles, France.

The teams identify a likely distribution hub and its leadership. But going deeper will take initiative and innovation. Kennedy takes the dangerous decision to operate in the open as a drug cartel. The operation yields results, but there is a piece missing. Parker and Kennedy believe a government contractor providing logistics flights into and out of the war zones is involved.

Plans are made by the fake cartel for a large shipment of heroin to go to the mafia in New York City, where wholesale arrests will be made if all goes as planned. As the data pours in from three continents, the heroin network unfolds and things to do not go as planned. The takedown of a multi-national drug production, shipment, and sales operation is unlike any operation Shadow Tier has attempted.

For the president, it’s a no-fail mission or his administration is doomed.
For Shadow Tier, it’s time to bring war back into “the war on drugs.”]]>

Remarkably Bright Creatures 199256512 For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope, tracing a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus.

After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late.

Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.]]>

<![CDATA[Kindred Spirits at Harling Hall (Ghosts of Rowan Vale, #1)]]> 220849367 The first in a delightfully warm, cosy and romantic new series with a fantasy twist, for fans of the BBC series Ghosts. Can Callie give some needy ghosts their happy-ever-afterlife, while making Rowan Vale her own forever home?

When single mum Callie visits Rowan Vale with her daughter, she is enchanted. The beautiful Cotswold village is run as a living museum, allowing tourists to see history in action. But there's more to the place than meets the eye...

To the residents' surprise, Callie is observed talking to several villagers she simply shouldn’t be able to see - as they’re ghosts.

The elderly owner of the village, Sir Lawrence Davenport, then makes an astonishing offer: to sell Callie the whole estate for a tiny sum, if she agrees to protect the village’s present tenants and its headstrong spirits.

With a spectral lord of the manor and his imperious wife, a naughty 1940s schoolgirl and William Shakespeare's former tutor among them, it seems Callie’s role as owner wouldn’t be easy.

And that’s without the added complication of Sir Lawrence’s disinherited grandson, the gorgeous Brodie.

Rowan Vale and Callie may need each other. But is this a match made in heaven or hell?]]>

Living Dead In Dallas 54774952 Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is having a streak of bad luck. First her co-worker is killed, and no one seems to care. Then she comes face-to-face with a beastly creature which gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins (like they didn't enjoy it).

The point is: they saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favour, she obliges - and soon Sookie's in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's supposed to interview certain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave, and let the humans go unharmed.

But that's easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly ...

The Sookie Stackhouse books are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves and things that really do go bump in the night.

The X-Files: Ruins 508499 LOST CITY, FOUND

When a well-connected American archaeologist, Cassandra Rubicon, disappears while exploring the lost Mayan city of Xitaclan, the incident becomes a case for FBI agents Mulder and Scully. They are investigators assigned to the X-Files, the strange and inexplicable cases the FBI wants to keep hidden -- cases involving the paranormal, the supernatural, and possibly, the extraterrestrial.

Mulder thinks there may be more to this case than simply a missing team of scientists -- namely ancient curses, blood sacrifices, and deadly reptilian monsters lost in the jungles since before history.

Scully is, as always, more skeptical and likely to provide the logical explanations for her partner's unorthodox speculations. Meanwhile, a covert U.S. military commando team has been sent to investigate, and destroy, a strange electronic signal received from beneath the ruins -- a signal aimed upwards, at the stars...

Everybody knows that there's no such thing as a female wizard. But now it's gone and happened, there's nothing much anyone can do about it.

Let the battle of the sexes begin...]]>

<![CDATA[Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Queen of the Slayers]]> 836176
With the closing of the Hellmouth and the awakening of hundreds of potential slayers, Buffy Summers thought she had overturned the Slayer's self-sacrifice and earned herself a much-deserved break. But the thrill of victory is short-lived. The Forces of Darkness are not ones to graciously accept defeat, and the collective rage unites disparate and powerful parties more eager than ever to reclaim dominance.

Willow's magickal distribution of the slayer essence left girls across the world discovering their latent power. Giles races to reorganize the now much-needed Watchers Council, and the Scoobies relocate to Europe. And there in Rome, Buffy is drawn to the Immortal -- a charismatic, if inscrutable, figure. But then comes word that a number of the fresh slayers are being coerced to join an army of slayers -- governed by the mysterious "Queen of the Slayers," an awesome evil determined to claim the intoxicating slayer essence for herself.

Xander is sent to Africa to learn more about the origin of the slayer essence. Instead, he returns to report that, alarmingly, there's not enough good in the world to counteract the overabundance of evil, and that the deciding apocalypse is drawing much too near. Alliances are formed and loyalties betrayed as it comes down to slayer versus slayer, leading to an ultimate battle of champions -- from Buffy's past and present. And then an unimaginable gift arrives...]]>

<![CDATA[Witchfinders: A Seventeenth-Century English Tragedy]]> 513969 By spring 1645, two years of civil war had exacted a dreadful toll upon England. People lived in terror as disease and poverty spread, and the nation grew ever more politically divided. In a remote corner of Essex, two obscure gentlemen, Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne, exploited the anxiety and lawlessness of the time and initiated a brutal campaign to drive out the presumed evil in their midst. Touring Suffolk and East Anglia on horseback, they detected demons and idolators everywhere. Through torture, they extracted from terrified prisoners confessions of consorting with Satan and demonic spirits.

Acclaimed historian Malcolm Gaskill retells the chilling story of the most savage witch-hunt in English history. By the autumn of 1647 at least 250 people--mostly women--had been captured, interrogated, and hauled before the courts. More than a hundred were hanged, causing Hopkins to be dubbed "Witchfinder General" by critics and admirers alike. Though their campaign was never legally sanctioned, they garnered the popular support of local gentry, clergy, and villagers. While "Witchfinders" tells of a unique and tragic historical moment fueled by religious fervor, today it serves as a reminder of the power of fear and fanaticism to fuel ordinary people's willingness to demonize others.

She really is...but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable.

And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's fussy about his food, he doesn't like suntans and he's never around during the day... Yep, Bill's a vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind.

And then one of Sookie's colleagues at the bar is killed and it's beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim.]]>

Serenity 287078 This paperback original novel is based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon's screenplay for Universal's 2005 motion picture. The characters are based on the science fiction TV series Firefly, which has achieved cult status.

Five hundred years in the future, Captain Mal Reynolds, a hardened war veteran (on the losing side), ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate, and undyingly loyal.

When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor named Simon and his unstable, telepathic sister, River -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from a coalition that dominates the universe with unlimited wealth and power -- and that will stop at nothing to control River and her abilities. The crew of mercenaries, used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed, soon find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Caught up in the fight to stay alive, they don't yet realize that their greatest danger may be on board Serenity herself....]]>

The Nanny Diaries 33951
One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy. Must be cheerful, enthusiastic, and selfless--bordering on masochistic. Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived preschooler. Must love geting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family. Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay. Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employer's Hermes bag. Those who take it personally need not apply.

Who wouldn't want this job? Struggling to graduate from NYU and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a position caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved to ensure that a Park Avenue wife, who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child, has a smooth day.

When the X's marriage begins to disintegrate, Nanny ends up involved way beyond the bounds of human decency or good taste. Her tenure with the X family becomes a nearly impossible mission to maintain the mental health of their four-year-old, her own integrity, and, most important, her sense of humor. Over nine tense months, Mrs. X and Nanny perform the age-old dance of decorum and power as they test the limits of modern-day servitude.]]>

Now they'll have to put aside old rivalries and grudges if they want to find or save the man who brought them together in the first place—and on the way they'll learn a great deal about the sinister house on the beach, the man who built it, and the evil he's bringing back to Marrowstone Island.

From award-winning author Cherie Priest comes a deeply haunting and atmospheric horror-thriller that explores the lengths we'll go to protect those we love.]]>

Now one of the associates at my law firm has discovered this strange new talent of mine and insists I use it to help defend his client against a double murder charge. To make things worse, I kind of have the hots for this Charles Longfellow, III.

And even worse than that? Octo-Cat can’t stand the guy and not-so-lovingly refers to him as “Upchuck. Ugh! Despite none of us being happy about it, we’re a team now, which means it’s up to us to find out who committed the crime our client is being blamed for.

Throw in a spastic Yorkie who hasn’t figured out his owner is dead, and oh boy How is this my life now?]]>

<![CDATA[Kitty Confidential (Pet Whisperer PI #1)]]> 43730066
I was just your normal twenty-something with seven associate degrees and no idea what I wanted to do with my life. That is, until I died Well, almost.

As if a near-death experience at the hands of an old coffeemaker wasn’t embarrassing enough, I woke up to find I could talk to animals. Or rather one animal in particular.

His full name is Octavius Maxwell Ricardo Edmund Frederick Fulton, but since that’s way too long for anyone to remember, I’ve taken to calling him Octo-Cat. He talks so fast he can be difficult to understand, but seems to be telling me that his late owner didn’t die of natural causes like everyone believes.

Well, now it looks like I no longer have a choice, apparently my life calling is to serve as Blueberry Bay’s first ever pet whisperer P.I while maintaining my façade as a paralegal at the offices of Fulton, Thompson & Associates.

I just have one question: How did Dr. Dolittle make this gig look so easy?]]>

The Witches 16007174 0140317309

'A REAL WITCH is easily the most dangerous of all the living creatures on earth.'

That's a pretty horrifying thought. More horrifying still is that real witches don't even look like witches. They don't ride around on broomsticks. They don't even wear black cloaks and hats. They are vile, despicable, scheming harridans who disguise themselves as nice, ordinary ladies.

So how can you tell when you're face to face with one? Read this story and you'll find out all you need to know. You'll also meet a real hero, a wise old grandmother and the most gruesome, grotesque gang of witches imaginable!]]>
