برجسته‌تری� و مشهورترین اثر این مجموعه داستان گیله مرد است. بخشی از داستان گیله مرد برای معرفی داستان نویسی مدرن در ایران در کتاب ادبیات سال دوم دبیرستان آمده است.

گیله مرد بزرگ علوی داستانی واقع‌گرایان� که در عین حال بسیار نمادین روایت شده است. سه شخصیت اصلی داستان بزرگ علوی هرکدام نماینده‌� طبقه‌ا� از جامعه‌� آن زمان ایران است. گیله مرد نماینده‌� مردم ستم دیده‌ایس� که راه مبارزه را در پیش گرفته اند. «محمد ولی وکیل باشی» مامور اول، نماد دولت است و مامور دوم، «مرد بلوچ» نماد گروهی از مردم ستم دیده است که راه حل عبور از این ظلم را در ظلم به دیگران می‌بین�.

گیله مرد برشی کوتاه از داستان زندگی مردی روستایی است. دهقانی شورشی که علیه ظلم و ستم قیام کرده است. همسر گیله مرد را ماموران دولت کشته اند. داستان جایی میان جنگل‌ها� گیلان روایت می‌شود� جایی که دو مامور دولت گیله مرد را به پاسگاهی در فومن می‌برن�.

مامور اول، «محمدولی» مرد بدطینتی است و دائم گوشه و کنایه می‌زن� و گیله مرد را آزار می‌ده�. اما مرد دوم در سکوت راه می‌‌رو�. سکوتی که گیله مرد را کلافه کرده است.

بخشی از داستان در ذهن گیله مرد می‌گذر�. او در فکر انتقام صغرا همسرش است و فکر بچه‌اش� بچه‌� شش ماهه‌ا� که داخل کومه جامانده و حالا گیله مرد نمی‌دانس� چه بر سرش خواهد آمد. او تلاش می‌کن� راهی برای فرار پیدا کند.

به موازات گیله مرد، مرد بلوچ ساکت هم در اندیشه زندگی خودش است. او را به زور به گیلان فرستاده‌ان� و از همسر و فرزندانش دور مانده است. هوا و غذا در گیلان به او نمی‌ساز� و از شرایطش ناراضی است و دنبال راهی برای گریز از این شرایط است.

Het psychologisch inzicht van Tolstoi is onder schrijvers wellicht ongeëvenaard Van hem is bekend dat hij altijd een notitieboekje bij zich droeg, waarin hij aantekeningen maakte, zelfs over de mensen in zijn naaste omgeving.

Bij het schrijven van zijn romans maakte hij later dikwijls gebruik van die aantekeningen. Evenals 'Anna Karenina' heeft Oorlog en Vrede autobiografische trekken. Veel van Tolstois eigen wezen vindt men er in terug, met name in Pierre en in Andrej Bolkonski. Voor Natasja Rostow, een van de bekoorlijkste vrouwenfiguren ooit beschreven, nam hij zijn schoonzuster Tatjana en zijn vrouw Sofia als model. Zelf zei ''Ik nam Tanja, versmolt haar met Sonja en daaruit ontstond Natasja.''

Maar ook de andere personen zijn niet in de oude graaf Rostow en diens vrouw vindt men bijvoorbeeld zijn grootouders terug en men meent in Sonja, het nichtje van Natasja en Nikolaj Rostow, zijn tante Jergolskaja te herkennen.

Doordat Tolstoi zijn personen zowel uiterlijk als innerlijk karakteriseert, krijgt elk persoon een eigen gezicht, passend bij de geaardheid; zelfs van onbeduidende figuren maakt hij nooit figuranten. Zo wijdt hij ij de meesterlijke beschrijving van de slag bij Borodino aandacht aan afzonderlijke soldaten, waarbij hij blijk geeft van een diep inzicht in hun psyche. Hij bezocht niet alleen het slagveld, maar hij ondervroeg en noteerde de verhalen van de nog in leven zijnde deelnemers aan de veldtochten tegen Napoleon. حالا که فکر می کنم می بینم واقعاً چه آدم های با گذشتی بودند. نور به قبرشان ببارد. میرزا علی اکبر دهخدا را گذاشته بودند هرچه دلش می حواهد بنویسد. میرزا هم فرصت را غنیمت شمرده بود و چه حرف هایی که از خودش در نمی آورد. مثلاً می نوشت:

در همه دنیا رسم است سال که به آخر رسید وقایع عمدۀ آن سال را در یک کتاب نوشته انتشار دهند.

من از وقایعی که آن مرحوم از خود درآورده، به علت تنگی جا، محض نمونه یکی را می آورم:

و هم در این سال یک نفر شاگرد قونسولگری اسلامبول که بعدها نفت فروشی می کرد و چند دفعه ورشکست شده، به اسلامبول رفته، باز به تهران آمده، باز به اسلامبول مراجعه کرده، باز به تهران بازگشته و باز به اسلامبول رجوع کرده، آخرش از تبریز سر درآورده (اما نفهمیدم بعد چطور شد).

اگر فهمیده بودید باعث تعجب بود. این هم شد خبر؟ بقیه خبرهایش هم دست کمی از این ندارد. ولی چرا سری که درد نمی کند دستمال ببندیم. در جای دیگر هم، در همین چرند پرند خبر زیرا را از تبریز ظاهراً جعل کرده:

بیست روز بود که مجاهدین از دو طرف سنگر بسته و با هم مشغول زد و خورد بودند� باری ده بیست روز بود که دکان ها بسته بود. ده بیست نفر هم از طرفین کشته شد. اما الحمدلله به خیر گذشت.

در این نقل قول نقطه چین جای خالی جمله ای است که در نسخۀ چاپی من در واقع جمله نیست. حتماً دوست فاضل آقای ولی الله درودیان در این چاپ شسته رفته، ضارب و مضروب را مثل بسیاری مجهولات دیگر معلوم خواهند کرد. خداوند عاقبت همه را ختم به خیر کند.

این رمان نخستین بار در 1965 در مجله نووی میر چاپ شد و بعد با نام برف سیاه ابتدا در شوروی و سپس در انگلیس و کشورهای دیگر به چاپ رسید.

]]> کتابخانه نیمه شب 61160034 شکوه و شکایت برای زندگی‌های� که آن‌ه� را زندگی نمی‌کنی� راحت است. آرزوی این‌ک� کاش استعدادهای دیگرمان را پرورش داده بودیم و به پیشنهادهای متفاوتی بله می‌گفتی� راحت است. آرزوی این‌ک� کاش سخت‌ت� کار کرده بودیم، بهتر عشق ورزیده بودیم، امور مالی خود را با درایت اداره کرده بودیم یا محبوب‌ت� شده بودیم راحت است.
زحمتی ندارد که برای دوستانی که نداشتیم و کاری که نکردیم و آدم‌های� که با آن‌ه� ازدواج نکردیم و بچه‌های� که نداشتیم احساس فقدان کنیم. سخت نیست که خودمان را از دریچه‌� چشم دیگران ببینیم و آرزو کنیم کاش تمام نسخه‌ها� متفاوت از خودمان بودیم که می‌خواستی� باشیم. راحت می‌شو� تا ابد حسرت خورد و در حسرت ماند.
