Through nearly three hundred transformative aphorisms, Nietzsche presents a worldview in which neither truth nor morality are absolutes, and where good and evil are not opposites but counterparts that stem from the same desires.

Beyond Good and Evil was a foundational text for early twentieth-century thinkers, including philosophers, psychologists, novelists, and playwrights. Today’s readers will delight in Nietzsche’s pithy wit and irony while gaining a deeper understanding of his core ideology.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from iconic authors. Ideal for anyone who wants to read a great work for the first time or revisit an old favorite, these new editions open the door to the stories and ideas that have shaped our world.

Revised edition: Previously published as Beyond Good and Evil, this edition of Beyond Good and Evil (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Man’s Search for Meaning 4069 Man's Search for Meaning has become one of the most influential books in America; it continues to inspire us all to find significance in the very act of living.]]> 165 Viktor E. Frankl 080701429X Mo 3
If the book were to be summarised in one sentence it would be "find something to do, someone to see or something to look forward to give meaning to your life"

I always used to say "The only reason I haven't committed suicide is probably that I've got things to do", so on a personal level, the book didn't really offer me a new perspective or a new modus operandi, apart from explaining, in a well-structured and fairly articulate way, why finding a purpose will actually give meaning to one's life and backing it up with scientific explanations and anecdotes.

I normally find holocaust narratives quite disturbing and difficult to read, especially if they contain violent or graphic details.
The Author's description of his time in the concentration camp didn't include any graphic or violent details, yet I still found it difficult to read as It focused on the psychological struggles and the horrifying mental challenges prisoners were facing every day, despite other physical/physiological aspects.

Although I found the struggles and the background story of Viktor's time spent in the concentration camp quite disturbing, I akcnowledge that it was a crucial introduction to his narrative.

Also, the fact that Viktor Frankl went on to become a best-seller, and is supposedly well-regarded in his field of psychotherapy, makes you wonder how many Viktor Frankls in other fields have we lost to this atrocious part of history ?

How sad it is that the insanity of one failed art student means that we may have already lost hundreds, if not thousands, of other Viktor Frankls?]]>

Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes reveal that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova and the second book was written at Carnuntum.]]>

Chicago 57615331 A medley of Egyptian and American lives collides on the campus of the University of Illinois Medical Center in a post-9/11 Chicago, and crises of identity abound. Among the players are an atheistic anti-establishment American professor of the sixties generation, whose relationship with a younger African-American woman becomes a moving target for intolerance; a veiled Ph.D. candidate whose conviction in the code of her traditional upbringing is shaken by her exposure to American society; an emigre who has fervently embraced his new American identity, but who cannot escape his Egyptian roots when faced with the issue of his daughter's 'honor'; an Egyptian State Security informant who spouts religious doctrines while hankering after money and power; and a dissident student poet who comes to America with the sole aim of financing his literary aspirations, but whose experience in Chicago turns out to be more than he bargained for.
This tightly plotted page-turner is set far from the downtown Cairo of Al Aswany's "The Yacoubian Building", but is no less unflinching an examination of contemporary Egyptian lives.]]>

It covers almost all basic QM topics and some intermediate ones. Topics such as Chi-Square, t- and Poisson distributions are covered in great depth. It also covers inferential statistics and topics like regression, ANOVA, and time-series analysis.

I believe the book covers almost all the necessary topics for social sciences PhD-level quantitative data analysis.
In a nutshell, It could take you from the point of not knowing how to "algebraically solve for x" up to the point where you can manipulate, make inferences from, and extrapolate your data set.

I would especially recommend this to anyone transitioning from STEM to social sciences Or already in a humanities/multi-disciplinary field since the book is written from a social sciences perspective and most of the examples and problems included are non-STEM.]]>

Excellent reference with very clear and concise examples. Although the book goes through some intermediate topics in Probability and Statistics, it assumes no prior knowledge of either. It even assumes no prior knowledge of Mathematics and starts off with an introduction to Algebra (i.e. solving for X) and straight-line graphs.

A brilliant introduction to a derivative Evolution theory, which may as well be called "the theory of everything". It seems that the author was mindful that his audience were neither specialists in the field nor well-versed in it, and this mindfulness is reflected in his usage of language and style of explanation. in other words, he has successfully conveyed his message as he would to a child, with as little jargon, and as much elaboration, as possible.

<![CDATA[The Dirty Parts of the Bible: A Graphic Novel]]> 199525508 The Dirty Parts of the Bible—originally a bestselling prose novel—is now a graphic novel!

Remus, Michigan. Easter Sunday, 1936... When Tobias Henry—the preacher’s son—ditches church to go fishing, he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that leaves his family devastated, forcing him to travel to Texas in search of a long-buried treasure.

Based on the bestselling novel by Sam Torode and masterfully illustrated by Tina Ritchie, The Dirty Parts of the Bible recasts the ancient Jewish tale of Tobias (found in the Book of Tobit) as a uniquely American story blending humor, adventure, and romance with a spiritual quest.

More than an adaptation, this is a complete re-visioning of the story—full of surprises even for those who’ve read the original book.

This Kindle e-book is formatted with Guided View, which allows you to zoom in and swipe through the story one panel at a time, creating a cinematic experience.

Praise for the Original Prose Version of The Dirty Parts of the Bible:

“While the title suggests a raunchy read, this rich and soulful novel is actually a rather well-done coming-of-age tale steeped in wanderlust and whimsy that at times recalls The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. —Publishers Weekly

“Sam Torode takes on God, sex, family, and love in his debut comic novel. It's a fun read, even for those who are still in the fold. —The Nashville Scene

“Lots of laughs, a few tears, and characters that are pure joy. —Front Street Reviews

The Dirty Parts of the Bible might just be the long-awaited Great American Novel.... We experience the odyssey of a young man who searches for lost treasure, his identity, and the alchemy of transforming lust to love. —John M. Perkins, New York Times bestselling author]]>

Infidel 81227
Infidel shows the coming of age of this distinguished political superstar and champion of free speech as well as the development of her beliefs, iron will, and extraordinary determination to fight injustice. Raised in a strict Muslim family, Hirsi Ali survived civil war, female mutilation, brutal beatings, adolescence as a devout believer during the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, and life in four troubled, unstable countries ruled largely by despots. She escaped from a forced marriage and sought asylum in the Netherlands, where she earned a college degree in political science, tried to help her tragically depressed sister adjust to the West, and fought for the rights of Muslim women and the reform of Islam as a member of Parliament. Under constant threat, demonized by reactionary Islamists and politicians, disowned by her father, and expelled from family and clan, she refuses to be silenced.

Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali’s story tells how a bright little girl evolves out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no other book could be more timely or more significant.]]>

How many hours are in a day when you don't spend half of them watching television? When is the last time any of us really worked to get something we wanted? How long has it been since any of us really needed something that we wanted?

The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility. An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living.

In a matter of months society has crumbled: no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, the survivors are forced to finally start living.

Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son.

A dark romance exposing the gaps in American identity politics, especially when exported overseas, If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English is at once ravishing and wry, scathing and tender. In our globalized twenty-first-century world, what are the new faces (and races) of empire? When the revolution fails, how long can someone survive the disappointment? Who suffers and, more crucially, who gets to tell about it?]]>

<![CDATA[Sapiens: A Graphic History, Volume 2 - The Pillars of Civilization]]> 57924373 Sapiens: A Graphic History, the full-color graphic adaptation of Yuval Noah Harari’s #1 New York Times bestseller, focuses on the Agricultural Revolution—when humans fell into a trap we’ve yet to escape: working harder and harder with diminishing returns.

What if humanity’s major woes—war, plague, famine and inequality—originated 12,000 years ago, when Homo sapiens converted from nomads to settlers, in pursuit of the fantasy of productivity and efficiency? What if by seeking to control plants and animals, humans ended up being controlled by kings, priests, and Kafkaesque bureaucracy? Volume 2 of Sapiens: A Graphic History The Pillars of Civilization explores a crucial chapter in human development: the Agricultural Revolution. This is the story of how wheat took over the world; how an unlikely marriage between a god and a bureaucrat created the first empires; and how war, plague, famine, and inequality became an intractable feature of the human condition.

But it’s not all doom and gloom with this book’s cast of entertaining characters and colorful humorous scenes. Yuval, Zoe, Prof. Saraswati, Cindy and Bill (now farmers), Detective Lopez, and Dr. Fiction, all introduced in Volume 1, once again travel the length and breadth of human history, this time investigating the impact the Agricultural Revolution has had on our species. The cunning Mephisto shows them how to ensnare humans, King Hammurabi lays down the law, and Confucius explains harmonious society. The origins of modern farming are introduced through Elizabethan tragedy; the changing fortunes of domesticated plants and animals are tracked in the columns of the Daily Business News; the story of urbanization is portrayed as a travel brochure, offering discount journeys to ancient Babylon and China; and the history of inequality unfolds in a superhero detective story; with guest appearances by historical and cultural personalities throughout such as Thomas Jefferson, Scarlett O'Hara, Margaret Thatcher, and John Lennon.

Sapiens: A Graphic History, Volume 2 is a radical, witty and colorful retelling of the story of humankind for adults and young adults, and can be read on its own or in sequence with Volume I.]]>

From the Back Cover

“I stuck a hair dryer on me bunion to stretch me skin out. Didn’t bloomin work.

So begins Brad’s uproarious new life as an Essex native who’s yanked from living his pipe dream in the Spanish sunshine to the grey and wet northwest of England.

In this comedy memoir, Brad is catapulted to a strange land in his homeland where complete strangers tell him about their bunions and insist on showing him the holes “they burned in the crotch of their swimming trunks.

It’s a land of confusion where everything he thought true comes into bread rolls are now called, “barms"; tea is something you eat not drink; almond milk is unheard of because, “yer don't get teats on an almond, stupid!

It’s a land where Brad is so cold that he’s wearing more coats than a nightclub cloakroom can handle while the locals casually stroll around in their beachwear.

Will fish out of water Brad sink or swim as he adapts to the culture shock of being a soft southerner up north?

One thing’s for sure, you’re in for a pant-pissing, rollercoaster ride of mishaps, mayhem, and meat pies.

It is at the Club, too, that Kamel's dangerous politics will find the favor and patronage of the king's seditious cousin, an unlikely revolutionary plotter–cum–bon vivant. The Yacoubian Building 128711
All manner of flawed and fragile humanity reside in the Yacoubian Building, a once-elegant temple of Art Deco splendor now slowly decaying in the smog and bustle of downtown Cairo: a fading aristocrat and self-proclaimed "scientist of women"; a sultry, voluptuous siren; a devout young student, feeling the irresistible pull toward fundamentalism; a newspaper editor helplessly in love with a policeman; a corrupt and corpulent politician, twisting the Koran to justify his desires.

These disparate lives careen toward an explosive conclusion in Alaa Al Aswany's remarkable international bestseller. Teeming with frank sexuality and heartfelt compassion, this book is an important window on to the experience of loss and love in the Arab world.]]>
