If I could concentrate long enough to read 100-odd pages of a comic trade in one sitting, I’d probably be blown away by the skilful storytelling of whoever Feilong and Orchis are (seriously, why don’t I remember any of whatever I read about them in what must only have been a few weeks ago when I tackled the earlier issues of this particular trade), and the mounting tension of Ben Urich vs Scott Summers.

I'll say that again: issue 29 where all "four" storylines come together at once in one of those one-panel-of-each-page-is-spooling-out-that-thread-of-the-plot, so-you-have-to-read-it-quickly-to-keep-it-all-in-your-head-or-read-it-four-times-to-understand-the-story is fucking irritating. It's a writer's conceit, to make a boring story seem spicier and more tense, when really all you need to know is its going nowhere interesting because "it was all a dream, Auntie Em"/"we had to put all the time travel toys back in the box and no one will remember".

I think I'm with Anne on this one: while I was enjoying the telling up til the end, the tale that was told left me cold. Can you not think of *any* other ending than the tragic "that's life, yo"? Fatalistic "nothing matters" hipster bullshit? If I wanted another reminder, I'd just go doomscroll Reddit for another paralysing evening. Can we not just give ourselves even a little "they were forever altered" ending (and not some ambiguous goth poetry crap)?

Somehow I tried to finish this volume four times and keep getting dragged down before I make any headway. I really thought momentum would carry me through the end - it was almost like my battle with volume 10 of Y: The Last Man? Still never read that one. Is this a BKV problem?

Every once in a while the 80’s references come fast and hard, and I wonder just how exploitive Vaughan was when he concocted this series - did he see the Stranger Things fandom and think, “I could buy me an Iroc with the money I could make off an 80’s-themed comic�? Is BKV just another Grant Morrison clone, whose muse isn't "tales I gotta tell" but more like "whatever words on a page will drive the most sales to angsty teens"?

Yeah, I know a tragic ending where folks forget the adventures they had is all artsy and everything, but Jesus Jehoshaphat on a Jamaican Jerk Chicken Jaunt, that ending sucked. I seriously didn’t even understand the whole “you knew where this was headed the whole time� time-travel-coalescing bullshit.

I think all the GenX pop culture references are doing a number on me. Am I really enjoying this book for what it is, or am I being lured by the siren song of my Ill-wasted youth? Either way, score another victory for BKV's formula. I'm pretty sure I'll finish this one (unlike Y, whose last volume I never somehow got around to, even in my heydays of intense, focused reading (which for ADHD just means "I remembered that I like to read, long enough to get past the boredom of the first five pages")).

Seeing Wally and Diana and Bruce drop in almost like guest cameos was fine I guess, but the whole thing felt flat. Earnestly trying to thread the needle on what it means to take over as the greatest superhero, eschewing all the fun I’m used to expecting, and kinda didn’t even sell me on the boy/bi-romance (they’re fine together, but I didn’t get the spark).

On 2nd read through I realised that GR had logged this book’s issues incorrectly - not 6-10 but 7-14. So this time around I got to read issues 11+ - and that MJ issue, this dude obviously admires the hell out of a three-dimensional MJ. Last time we saw this good of a portrayal was Joe Kelly’s “Renew Your Vows� run, which was just as unnaturally shortened as this was.

By issue 3 I’m finally concentrating on the characters, and I realise even Rucka can’t take this seriously. A half-snake, half-female assassin? A sleaze bag pharma CEO? And yet another time when Dr. Curt Connors� whole family is in dire straits?

Issue 4 the art seems ridiculous again. Did someone lose a bet? Then that ending. The assassin [spoilers removed] Like the creators couldn’t even be arsed to put together a coherent story, they were just so ready to give in to the spectacle?

Fun. Lighthearted. Whacky. This is the kind of breezy comics reading I need right now, deep in pandemic territory.

Second read-through: the breezy feel of the dialogue and art belies a sophistication - like how it is with actors, you have to be pretty sharp to play a stupid character *well*.

Or how they say “If you can’t give a simple explanation for a complicated subject, then you don’t understand it.�

Waid and Weiringo understand these lovable freaks incredibly. And still make it fun without being broad, and without punching down on anyone.
