Ashes on the Moor 35909696
Though she has no training as a teacher, she must prove herself successful before her grandfather will release her substantial inheritance to her and allow her to be reunited with her younger sister, the last remaining member of her family after a fever claimed the lives of her parents and brothers.

Evangeline's sudden change in circumstances is complicated when her aunt—a woman who values class distinctions more than her family relationships—forbids her from acknowledging any connection to her or to her grandfather, Mr. Farr—the man who owns nearly the entire town. For the first time in her life, Evangeline is truly alone.

Heartbroken, she turns to the one person in town who has shown her kindness—an Irish brick mason, Dermot, and his son, Ronan. Despite the difference in their classes and backgrounds, Evangeline and Dermot become friends, due in part to her ability to connect with Ronan, whose behavior requires special attention. The boy is uncomfortable around strangers and rarely even speaks to the other children in town. He often fixates on details other people ignore, and he adheres to specific, self-made rules that give his life order and structure; for example, Dermot's coat must be hung on a specific peg next to the door.

Evangeline attempts to prove herself a worthy teacher and earn the respect of her hard-to-understand students. Determined to find a way to introduce them to "proper English" while still honoring their unique language and culture, she enlists the help of a local family to write down familiar stories in the Yorkshire vernacular. Because of her efforts, the students and their families warm to Evangeline and she continues to look for ways to give the children a chance to become more than factory workers in the local cotton mill.

When the town learns of her upper-class status, Evangeline must work twice as hard to win back their trust--especially Dermot's. In the end, Evangeline and Dermot discover that, even though they come from different social spheres, together they can overcome social prejudices, make a positive difference in the lives of even the humblest people, and enjoy the strength that comes when two hearts find each other.

Ashes on the Moor is the inspiring love story of one Victorian woman's courage to fight against all odds, and the man whose quiet strength gives her the confidence to keep trying.]]>

<![CDATA[Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life]]> 62352297
In Awe, Dacher Keltner presents a radical investigation and deeply personal inquiry into this elusive emotion. Revealing new research into how awe transforms our brains and bodies, alongside an examination of awe across history, culture, and within his own life during a period of grief, Keltner shows us how cultivating awe in our everyday life leads us to appreciate what is most humane in our human nature. And during a moment in which our world feels more divided than ever before, and more imperiled by crises of different kinds, we are greatly in need of awe. If we open our minds, it is awe that sharpens our reasoning and orients us toward big ideas and new insights, that cools our immune system’s inflammation response and strengthens our bodies. It is awe that activates our inclination to share and create strong networks, to take actions that are good for the natural and social world around us. It is awe that transforms who we are, that inspires the creation of art, music, and religion. At turns radical and profound, brimming with enlightening and practical insights, Awe is our field guide, from not only one of the leading voices on the subject but a fellow seeker of awe in his own right, for how to place awe as a vital force within our lives.]]>

The Elopement 199690273 ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

1820. Mary Dorothea Knatchbull is living under the sole charge of her widowed father, Sir Edward a man of strict principles and high Christian values.

But when her father marries Miss Fanny Knight of Godmersham Park, Mary’s life is suddenly changed.

Her new stepmother comes from a large, happy and sociable family and Fanny’s sisters become Mary’s first friends. Her aunt, Miss Cassandra Austen of Chawton, is especially kind. Her brothers are not only amusing, but handsome and charming.

And as Mary Dorothea starts to bloom into a beautiful young woman, she forms an especial bond with one Mr Knight in particular.

Soon, they are deeply in love and determined to marry. They expect no opposition. After all, each is from a good family and has known the other for some years.

It promises to be the most perfect match. Who would want to stand in their way?]]>

This one focuses on the family that Jane Austen's niece Fanny Knight married into: the Knatchbulls. It goes far deeper than a typical Regency romance, with a meaningful thread on the subject of women's freedom of choice (or lack thereof) uniting the narrative. It alternates between giving us the viewpoint of Fanny and that of her stepdaughter Mary Dorothea.

As usual in a Gill Hornby book, the research and the historical voice are impeccable! I've come away with new information and interpretations about some of the individuals in Austen's world and beyond it. Loved the reading experience.

<![CDATA[Printer's Error: Irreverent Stories from Book History]]> 30653712 Pawn Stars.

Since the Gutenberg Bible first went on sale in 1455, printing has been viewed as one of the highest achievements of human innovation. But the march of progress hasn’t been smooth; downright bizarre is more like it. Printer’s Error chronicles some of the strangest and most humorous episodes in the history of Western printing, and makes clear that we’ve succeeded despite ourselves. Rare-book expert Rebecca Romney and author J. P. Romney take us from monasteries and museums to auction houses and libraries to introduce curious episodes in the history of print that have had a profound impact on our world.

Take, for example, the Gutenberg Bible. While the book is regarded as the first printed work in the Western world, Gutenberg’s name doesn’t appear anywhere on it. Today, Johannes Gutenberg is recognized as the father of Western printing. But for the first few hundred years after the invention of the printing press, no one knew who printed the first book. This long-standing mystery took researchers down a labyrinth of ancient archives and libraries, and unearthed surprising details, such as the fact that Gutenberg’s financier sued him, repossessed his printing equipment, and started his own printing business afterward. Eventually the first printed book was tracked to the library of Cardinal Mazarin in France, and Gutenberg’s forty-two-line Bible was finally credited to him, thus ensuring Gutenberg’s name would be remembered by middle-school students worldwide.]]>

<![CDATA[Jane Austen's Bookshelf: A Rare Book Collector's Quest to Find the Women Writers Who Shaped a Legend]]> 214152206 From rare book dealer and guest star of the hit show Pawn Stars, a page-turning literary adventure that introduces readers to the women writers who inspired Jane Austen—and investigates why their books have disappeared from our shelves.

Long before she was a rare book dealer, Rebecca Romney was a devoted reader of Jane Austen. She loved that Austen’s books took the lives of women seriously, explored relationships with wit and confidence, and always, allowed for the possibility of a happy ending. She read and reread them, often wishing Austen wrote just one more.

But Austen wasn’t a lone genius. She wrote at a time of great experimentation for women writers—and clues about those women, and the exceptional books they wrote, are sprinkled like breadcrumbs throughout Austen’s work. Every character in Northanger Abbey who isn’t a boor sings the praises of Ann Radcliffe. The play that causes such a stir in Mansfield Park is a real one by the playwright Elizabeth Inchbald. In fact, the phrase “pride and prejudice came from Frances Burney’s second novel Cecilia. The women that populated Jane Austen’s bookshelf profoundly influenced her work; Austen looked up to them, passionately discussed their books with her friends, and used an appreciation of their books as a litmus test for whether someone had good taste. So where had these women gone? Why hadn’t Romney—despite her training—ever read them? Or, in some cases, even heard of them? And why were they no longer embraced as part of the wider literary canon?

Jane Austen’s Bookshelf investigates the disappearance of Austen’s heroes—women writers who were erased from the Western canon—to reveal who they were, what they meant to Austen, and how they were forgotten. Each chapter profiles a different writer including Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Lennox, Charlotte Smith, Hannah More, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi, and Maria Edgeworth—and recounts Romney’s experience reading them, finding rare copies of their works, and drawing on connections between their words and Austen’s. Romney collects the once-famed works of these forgotten writers, physically recreating Austen’s bookshelf and making a convincing case for why these books should be placed back on the to-be-read pile of all book lovers today. Jane Austen’s Bookshelf will encourage you to look beyond assigned reading lists, question who decides what belongs there, and build your very own collection of favorite novels.]]>

As someone who has reveled in the discovery the last few years that yes, there were other great women writers before and during the time of Jane Austen, I enjoyed this book tremendously! It devotes a chapter each to eight of Austen's "colleagues" that is, women writers she definitely read and appreciated. A well-researched work like this really helps open up an era of history that can otherwise feel like it sits two-dimensionally in the pages of only its most famous writers. That is far from the truth, as revealed in this book. There is much to learn and so many real and complicated individuals that are not lost to history, especially thanks to the current ease of access to public domain books on the Internet.

The Mysteries of Udolpho 93134 The Mysteries of Udolpho, Ann Radcliffe raised the Gothic romance to a new level and inspired a long line of imitators. Portraying her heroine's inner life, creating a thick atmosphere of fear, and providing a gripping plot that continues to thrill readers today, The Mysteries of Udolpho is the story of orphan Emily St. Aubert, who finds herself separated from the man she loves and confined within the medieval castle of her aunt's new husband, Montoni. Inside the castle, she must cope with an unwanted suitor, Montoni's threats, and the wild imaginings and terrors that threaten to overwhelm her.

This new edition includes an introduction that discusses the publication and early reception of the novel, the genre of Gothic romance, and Radcliffe's use of history, exotic settings, the supernatural, and poetry.]]>

Fleeing the clutches of Robespierre’s revolutionary Tribunal in France, Lili Minet makes a desperate escape on a ship headed to England, but her dangerous flight takes an unexpected turn when a violent storm catapults her off the ship and eighty years into the future, leaving her stranded in the unfamiliar world of 1873 England.

When lighthouse keeper Armitage Pierce rescues a woman from the tumultuous sea, he does not anticipate her silent, cold response to his gallant efforts. Though he is wary of this woman and her odd behaviors, he finds she is just as wary of him. And he can sense that she is not telling him something of great import to her. Only Armitage’s grandfather, a man seasoned by the mysteries of the sea, can seem to penetrate Lili’s defenses to offer her support. But as Lili heals from the physical and emotional wounds of her ordeal and Armitage continues to offer light and safety to her, a tender friendship blossoms between the two.

Yet the shadow of danger looms as the threat that chased Lili from France all those years ago reemerges in her new present. Together Lili and Armitage must navigate the challenges of a romance that grows to defy the boundaries of time and the perils that reach across the decades to ensnare Lili. As the storm clouds gather, Lili and Armitage face the ultimate test—discovering whether their bond is strong enough to rewrite the pages of history itself to save them and their love.]]>

For Kipling Summerfield, the glamour of Hollywood is becoming a distant memory. After losing the role of a lifetime, he’s forced to take a lesser job as a historical reenactor on England’s Guilford Island. But a sudden storm changes everything, casting him into the ocean—and into the care of a mysterious lighthouse keeper.

Kip assumes the island’s immersive historical setting is part of an elaborate performance, though the method actors are too convincing, the details too vivid—almost like they believe they are in 1803. But then he meets Miss Amelia Archibald, a determined and captivating woman whose quiet strength is more than just acting, and it makes him question everything he believes about Guilford.

Amelia has spent her life as an unimportant poor relation and is now trapped by her late grandfather’s will on an island she loathes because of her great fear of the sea, forced to restore the crumbling estate there to claim her inheritance or lose it all and her freedom to her uncle if she fails. When Kip stumbles into her world, his strange ideas and warm presence are both a disruption and an unexpected light.

As Kip and Amelia work to save Guilford Island, an undeniable connection blooms between them. But when Kip uncovers the truth about where—or when—he is, he must make an impossible choice: rise to meet the expectations of Amelia’s world and build a life worthy of her station or walk away from the love that has redefined his very existence.]]>

2.5 stars. I liked the antiques business stuff and the ending was pretty cute, but I don't like plots where one of the characters is engaged to someone else for practically the entire book. Also, for a book written in 1999, the idea of it being ok for a girl to break off an engagement but dishonorable for a guy to do so just seems wildly outdated.

The Brontë Myth 75143 Following the Brontë sisters through their many reincarnations at the hands of biographers, Lucasta Miller reveals as much about the impossible art of biography as she does about the Brontës themselves. Their first biographer, Mrs Gaskell, transformed their story of literary ambition into one of the great legends of the 19th century, a dramatic tale of three lonely sisters playing out their tragic destiny on top of a windswept moor. Lucasta Miller reveals where this image came from and how it took such a hold on the popular imagination.

Each generation has rewritten the Brontës to reflect changing attitudes - towards the role of the woman writer, towards sexuality, towards the very concept of personality. The Brontë Myth gives vigorous new life to our understanding of the novelists and their culture. It is a witty, erudite and refreshingly unsentimental unravelling of what Henry James described as "the most complete intellectual muddle ever achieved on a literary question by our wonderful public."

I would finish this on principle if it were shorter, but it’s very very long and not a brilliant biography. The author’s business seems mostly to mythologize, and she throws out assumptions and draws conclusions in an amateurish way that can be slightly annoying to read. There are several other late 19th/early 20th century Brontë biographies that are more enjoyable and feel more grounded.

LONGLISTED FOR THE PORCHLIGHT BUSINESS BOOK AWARD “A masterpiece.”—Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Adam Grant, and Daniel H. Pink’s Next Big Idea Club Winter 2021 Winning Selection

One of the best new books of the year—The Washington Post, BBC, USA Today, CNN Underscored, Shape, Behavioral Scientist, PopSugar Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and Shelf Awareness starred reviews

Is talking to yourself normal? The truth is that we all have a voice in our head. When we talk to ourselves, we often hope to tap into our inner coach but find our inner critic instead. When we’re facing a tough task, our inner coach can buoy us up: Focus—you can do this. But, just as often, our inner critic sinks us entirely: I’m going to fail. They’ll all laugh at me. What’s the use?

In Chatter, acclaimed psychologist Ethan Kross explores the silent conversations we have with ourselves. Interweaving groundbreaking behavioral and brain research from his own lab with real-world case studies—from a pitcher who forgets how to pitch, to a Harvard undergrad negotiating her double life as a spy—Kross explains how these conversations shape our lives, work, and relationships. He warns that giving in to negative and disorienting self-talk—what he calls “chatter”—can tank our health, sink our moods, strain our social connections, and cause us to fold under pressure.

But the good news is that we’re already equipped with the tools we need to make our inner voice work in our favor. These tools are often hidden in plain sight—in the words we use to think about ourselves, the technologies we embrace, the diaries we keep in our drawers, the conversations we have with our loved ones, and the cultures we create in our schools and workplaces.

Brilliantly argued, expertly researched, and filled with compelling stories, Chatter gives us the power to change the most important conversation we have each day: the one we have with ourselves.]]>

Through research, interviews, and personal stories, Deborah Farmer Kris explores how awe and wonder can and should be a part of every childhood, and how becoming an awe-seeker can change your life and your parenting in profound and concrete ways.

Plenty of parenting resources speak directly to the concerns facing children and teens, including intense pressure to achieve, how to navigate social media and the online world, struggles with focus and motivation, spiking rates of anxiety and disordered eating, and worries about climate change, political strife, global crises, and local injustices. Rather than focusing on the challenges or telling you how to raise kids, this book, structured around seven of the most common sources of awe identified by Dacher Keltner and other awe researchers, aims to reconnect you with something fundamentally the capacity to wonder.

With the curiosity of a reporter and the heart of a parent, and with plenty of humor, and honesty, Farmer Kris breaks down the science of awe, connecting the research to what we know about how kids learn and grow and anchoring it with four of her personal parenting tenets that dovetail with

In these pages, you’ll hear from experts, and read stories and observations from the author’s experiences as a parent and educator of two decades. Words from other parents and from young people themselves round out the chapters and underline the importance of bending kids worlds toward wonder. Deborah Farmer Kris Alisha 5 Although parenting is implicit in the title, I highly recommend it also to non-parents like me, because awe truly is one of the most important human experiences there is. This book did a beautiful job of exploring what kinds of awe we can tap into as individuals or families and what impact they have on our well-being, whether it be emotional, mental, or even physical.
Perhaps you, like me, can readily name nature, the universe, and perhaps music and art, as sources of awe. This book goes a little further into other parts of life and humanity that can elicit awe in us, things that I hadn't necessarily thought about but that really resonated with me.
I was so reflective and enjoyably focused while reading this book that it almost came as a shock to me when it was finished. It would be worth revisiting - it's a beautiful subject to spend some time with.

Some Like It Scot 216052869 An American travel writer who has never found a place to belong and a reclusive Scot with a surprising secret find a shocking connection when she enters a Highlands manor house that has been turned into a three-week long Edwardian experience.

Katie Campbell has traveled her entire life. As the daughter of an army chaplain, changing homes--or even countries--was commonplace, so when her wild childhood storytelling turned into a lucrative career as a travel writer, she thought she'd found her perfect match. But as she's nearly thirty with no real place to settle down, she's starting to wonder where "home" actually is. Her own family hadn't felt like home since her sister's death left them all limping through life.

When a lengthy project in Scotland promises to not only give her travel fodder for months but also a shot at a coveted editing position, she accepts and is sent to spend three weeks in the newly created Craighill House, a Scottish home redesigned to offer guests an Edwardian experience. But her entrance to Craighill introduces her to a quirky group of characters and a surly Scot who is helping refurbish the magnificent woodwork of the estate house.

As Katie attempts to live "Edwardian," she learns that all that glitters does not a comfortable lifestyle make . . . and surly Scots may turn out to be dashing and creative uncles raising their orphaned nephews. When a few escapades from the Downton era lead Katie on hunts for mermaids and dragons or to a fireside chat with a family who has grown stronger through tragedy, Katie begins to wonder if "home" looks a whole lot like rolling green hills, magnificent braighs, and a few extra "ayes" thrown in for good measure. But can her world-traveling lifestyle fit in with a Scot whose heart is double-knotted to home?]]>

For me, it wasn't a complete success because first-person dual point-of-view is always a hard sell for me. It also had a number of romance conventions that, while very common, don't land that well with me -- a lot of repetitive lingering over physical attraction and a fairly cardboard "villain" that didn't add much to the plot.

That said, it was clean and cute, and if you unreservedly enjoy the genre, this one will probably be a good choice.

LOTS of red herrings in this one, and I had a bit of trouble keeping people straight, as they aren’t really given very much detail to make them come alive. A bit cardboard, I guess. Also, this isn’t one where you stand much of a chance of figuring out the truth early on, because there are a lot of potential hidden identities. Still, plenty of good Poirot moments.

To keep her family from scandal, Mattie Rayment needs to marry off her flirtatious younger sister before the Season ends. Vouchers for Almack’s are her best hope to secure a suitable match. Her neighbors come together to try to help her have a successful Season after she receives an unexpected offer to go to London. Lord Deverell is the quintessential bored aristocrat with too much time, money, and handsomeness. SIX WISHES by Sarah M. Eden:
Felicity Bandbury has come to London with one aim in mind: give her dying sister the Season of her dreams. But it is a tall order for a young lady who knows nothing of Town or Society. She enlists the help of their neighbor and childhood friend, William Carlisle. He’s not been home in years, not since the sudden loss of his parents. Felicity’s request offers him the hope of healing from his own grief as well as a connection to home he desperately needs. Can two grieving souls find room in their hearts for love?

"I could not be more excited about this book."--Jenna Fischer, actor and cohost of Office Ladies podcast

The chorus of "shoulds" is loud. You should enjoy the moment, dream big, have it all, get up before the sun, track your water consumption, go on date nights, and be the best. Or maybe you should ignore what people think, live on dry shampoo, be a negligent PTA mom, have a dirty house, and claim your hot mess like a badge of honor.

It's so easy to feel overwhelmed by the mixed messages of what it means to live well.

Kendra Adachi, the creator of the Lazy Genius movement, invites you to live well by your own definition and equips you to be a genius about what matters and lazy about what doesn't. Everything from your morning routine to napping without guilt falls into place with Kendra's thirteen Lazy Genius principles, including:

- Decide once
- Start small
- Ask the Magic Question
- Go in the right order
- Schedule rest

Discover a better way to approach your relationships, work, and piles of mail. Be who you are without the complication of everyone else's "shoulds." Do what matters, skip the rest, and be a person again.]]>

I appreciated the middle-of-the-road approach this book encourages to life, plans, goals, housekeeping, socializing, and so forth, which is: don’t try to do everything perfectly (the “genius way) but also don’t give up on things that matter to you in a spiral of defeatist thinking (the “lazy way). It does a pretty good job of giving the reader the freedom to decide what matters most on a list of priorities, and some principles for how to make life easier. That said, it felt like it was treading some very similar ground to other advice books out there, especially “How to Keep House While Drowning, which I found personally to be a more resonant read.

It's a strange thing that the biographies written closest to the Brontes' lifetime are (paradoxically) the most inaccurate, and yet sort of the most accurate... inaccurate because emotions were still high enough that some people were trying to sanitize Branwell's interlude with Mrs. Robinson, among other things, and yet uniquely accurate because these biographers had access to something we don't now--surviving eyewitnesses and neighbors, etc.

This biography, written in 1899, covers some of the same ground as Clement Shorter's work a few years earlier, though it condenses the material and presents it in a chronological format as opposed to Shorter's topical approach. There's not much new information presented, though it's a decent all-round look at the Bronte family's lives. It does come with some unconcealed bias and assumptions about some of the family, and some obvious inaccuracies or gaps because some source material hadn't yet become available. It's also occasionally a bit saccharine.

<![CDATA[The Brontë Cabinet: Three Lives in Nine Objects]]> 25622887

From the miniature books they made as children to the blackthorn walking sticks they carried on solitary hikes on the moors, each personal possession opens a window onto the sisters' world, their beloved fiction, and the Victorian era. A description of the brass collar worn by Emily’s bull mastiff, Keeper, leads to a series of entertaining anecdotes about the influence of the family’s dogs on their writing and about the relationship of Victorians to their pets in general. The sisters' portable writing desks prove to have played a crucial role in their writing lives: it was Charlotte's snooping in Emily’s desk that led to the sisters' first publication in print, followed later by the publication of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

Charlotte's letters provide insight into her relationships, both innocent and illicit, including her relationship with the older professor to whom she wrote passionately. And the bracelet Charlotte had made of Anne and Emily's intertwined hair bears witness to her profound grief after their deaths.

Lutz captivatingly shows the Brontës anew by bringing us deep inside the physical world in which they lived and from which their writings took inspiration.]]>

This book was recommended to me by a docent at the Bronte Parsonage Museum. It’s sort of a Bronte biography, but organized into nine objects around which the story can be told. Includes a lot of interesting historical context for things like postage, mourning jewelry, writing desks, and so on. I quibble a couple of times with the author’s interpretations, but I did enjoy this approach to the family’s life.

Nearly fifty years later, in 1972, polio survivor June Turner is deeply proud of the legacy her great aunt Marion has left as a redwood warrior. And despite her disability, June is determined to prove herself capable as a ranger at the recently established Redwood National Park, even if it means taking to the trails with her crutch in hand. What better way to carry on the family tradition of preserving God’s magnificent creation?

When aspiring film student Adam Garner approaches June to help make a documentary about Marion's life, she swiftly grabs the opportunity to spread her aunt's worthy reputation. That is, until they unearth a secret that might shatter the family legacy. In the scramble for answers, June may lose not only her family pride but also her own dreams.

Karen Barnett's beautifully crafted split-time novel, set against the majestic backdrop of a beloved national park, immerses the reader in history that feels as fresh as if it happened yesterday.]]>

Charlotte Bronte only left Britain twice in her life, and both times it was to go to Brussels. She later memorialized her time there, re-naming the city "Villette" and bringing it to life in her final published novel, which draws HEAVILY on her experiences there as a student and teacher, including her complicated and tragic feelings for Monsieur Heger, her professor.
The importance of her time in Brussels cannot be overstated... without Brussels, there would have been no Jane Eyre because there would have been no Rochester. (And of course there would have been no Villette.)

<![CDATA[Knave of Diamonds (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, 19)]]> 218695923 Mary Russell’s allegiances are tested by the reappearance of her long-lost uncle—and a tantalizing case not even Sherlock Holmes could solve.

When Mary Russell was a child, she adored her black-sheep Uncle Jake. But she hasn’t heard from him in many years, and she's assumed that his ne’er-do-well ways had brought him to a bad end somewhere—until he presents himself at her Sussex door. Yes, Jake is back, and with a load of problems for his clever niece. Not the least of which is the reason the family rejected him in the first he was involved—somehow—in the infamous disappearance of the Irish Crown Jewels from a secure safe in Dublin Castle.

It was a theft that shook a government, enraged a King, threatened the English establishment—and baffled not only the Dublin police and Scotland Yard, but Sherlock Holmes himself. And now, Jake expects Russell to step into the middle of it all? To slip away with him, not telling Homes what she’s up to? Knowing that the theft—unsolved, hushed-up, scandalous—must have involved Mycroft Holmes as well?

Naturally, she can do nothing of the sort. Siding with her Uncle Jake, even briefly, could only place her in opposition to both her husband-partner, and to his secretive and powerful brother. She has to tell Jake no.

On the other hand, this is Jake—her father’s kid brother, her childhood hero, beloved and long-lost survivor of a diminished family.

Conflicting loyalties and international secrets, blatant lies and blithe sounds like another case for Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes.]]>

The last couple of installments of the Mary Russell series have hearkened back somewhat to what I enjoyed at the beginning of the series--fairly straightforward narratives driven by the people in their inner circle, without too much foray into the international political intrigue that I find so dull in a novel of "suspense." No, in this one the plot hits much closer to home, and is all the better for it. Mary's long-absent Uncle Jack, the black sheep of her family, shows up to ask her help in a little matter relating to the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels.

Basically, I have had an unexpectedly difficult decade there have been surprising joys, but also deep revelations and challenging lows. LETTERS TO A WALLFLOWER by Heather B. Moore
Ellen might be beautiful and considered a diamond of the first water by Society, but she is so very tired of the pressure to marry a titled gentleman so that her beauty won’t go to waste. When her cousin Dinah dares Ellen to attend a ball with no frills and to stand with the wallflowers, Ellen takes on the dare. What’s in the wager for her? The prize cuttings of her aunt’s extraordinary roses. But what Ellen isn’t expecting is Lord Ravenshire to engage her in the most interesting conversation. When she confesses to him of her opposition in marrying for a title, he confesses his distaste of the London scene. They strike a bargain together, one which will either push them apart or lead to a future sweeter than either of them could have imagined.

TO MARRY A WALLFLOWER by Anneka R. Walker

She never planned to pretend to be her fictional cousin to learn more about him, or to fall in love with Lord Templeton’s friend in the process. Lord Templeton dreads returning to the empty halls of Newcliff Manor. When his father’s old friend, Mr. Winters reaches out for assistance, Lord Templeton finds himself returning home engaged to a woman he has never met. Desperate to learn more about Miss Winters, he befriends her cousin. He wouldn’t have spoken to her, or lied about his identity, if he’d known the quiet woman would sneak into his heart.

It's interesting to chart the development of Bronte biographies... this was an extremely early one (although of course it was many years later than Elizabeth Gaskell's seminal work). Anyway, this one was written while Charlotte's husband was still alive, as well as her main correspondent Ellen Nussey. So, although it reveals quite a bit and makes liberal use of her letters, it also has to conceal a lot that would have still been too sensitive for living acquaintances.

Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be, which comprise a series of novella-length volumes. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

Professor Magdalena Martín needs to find a man—or at least find out why he disappeared in the sixteenth century. Research leads her from Spain to picturesque Puerto Rico. Accustomed to being a team of one, she finds herself working alongside a too-charming-for-his-own-good fellow historian who proves to be an unfortunately distracting necessity.

The last thing Rico Morales expected when he left Wall Street was to end up going on a wild-goose chase with a snooty academic. Can't a man aimlessly search for his life's purpose in peace? His loose itinerary did not include bantering through a genealogical investigation with a captivating colleague—or grappling with their undeniable connection.

'Lena' is on a singular mission to solve this career-defining mystery and return to her life in Salamanca. Yet the more time she spends with Rico, the more she falls for the enchanting island and his smoldering smile. When they're together, possibilities hum. Like the possibility of something that would stand the test of time—if only she were the sort to stay.

Even as suspicion falls on some of the bakers, a decidedly different kind of heat begins to simmer between Claire and Jonathan. There were several things I enjoyed about this book, though ultimately it didn't quite work for me. I thought the tribute to the Great British Baking Show was so fun, and if you've ever seen any seasons of that you'll be able to picture the setting, the cast, and the hosts so easily! I also really liked the two leads: Claire, the competent and outwardly calm baker, and Jonny, the slightly grumbly viscount on whose property the show is being filmed. They were great together.

This is a rather somber but effective poison-letter mystery. Ethel Lina White (author of The Wheel Spins, aka The Lady Vanishes, and other thrillers) spins a moody tale of an apparently perfect village, the peace of which is threatened by a spate of vicious letters. I did figure out the culprit, based solely on the principles of misdirection, but it still made for a taut and tense read, suitable for a fan of vintage thriller/Golden Age mystery.

<![CDATA[What Comes of Attending the Commoners Ball]]> 215353471 Hester Flanders went to the ball for the food. She didn’t expect a prince to follow her home.

If there’s one rule Hester learned during her country upbringing, it’s never accept a gift; that’s how the Folk get you. Although she’s left her farm behind, she can’t leave her superstitions, even if no one else in the capital city seems to care. Hardworking but hungry, she’s looking for loopholes, and the king’s annual Commoners Ball seems like the perfect way to get a free meal that’s not technically a gift—and it would have been, too, except a pesky prince took a shine to her.

Inglebert Lucas Chesingwick isn’t just the crown prince; he’s also practical, responsible, and very annoyed to see his younger brother causing a scene by flirting with a peasant at the ball. He can separate them for one night, but his mischievous brother is determined to see the poor girl again. And again. And for some reason, Lucas keeps running into her, too. If only there was some way he could help her.

The princes might mean well, but Hester knows better than to accept favors from anyone, even royalty—even if it’s cheese—and even if saying no breaks her heart. After all, just because the Folk have never been seen in the city doesn’t mean they’re not around.

The second installment in the Perfect Passion Company series is a gentle cozy read with a little bit of angst and a generous helping of kindness. As Katie grows into her role of introductions-maker and dispenser of relationship advice for other people, she has to face the reality that her own emotions are far from settled when it comes to her neighbor/assistant William. Meanwhile, they work together on some tricky match-making cases: a man obsessed with family heritage looking for a woman with "background", and a woman convinced that she met the love of her life a year ago at the supermarket but was too scared to give him her name or number, or to get his. Lots of meandering thoughts and conversations along the way. If you like that about Alexander McCall Smith (and I've grown to), then you'll enjoy this one.

Dale Carnegie Alisha 4 helpful-anxiety-reads
But first, a little light-hearted critique:
* Dale Carnegie is a Buzzfeed writer before there were such things. ("If you have a worry problem, apply the magic formula of Willis H. Carrier." "Seven Ways to Peace and Happiness", "If You Do This, You Will Never Worry About Ingratitude", "How to Cure Melancholy in Fourteen Days").
* Dale Carnegie is also your mother who knows exactly where you're off base and is talking to you kindly but firmly about how to Straighten Up.
Yeah, it's an interesting tone. It's a bit... folksy? Is that the right word? I think so. You definitely feel as if he knows who he's talking to. And it's you.

BUT. In spite of the fact that I chuckled/cringed at some things...
He makes a lot of solid practical points, and he says them in a way that makes me sit up and take notice. I think since he was writing decades before the market was flooded with formulaic self-help books written in a detached clinical voice, his text stands out as truly unique and memorable. And some of his points have actually popped into my head during anxious moments, days after reading about them. I honestly think I will remember and use some of this stuff.

One of my favorite points came early on. And, you guessed it, it's "the magic formula of Willis H. Carrier." ;) Yeah, I'm not crazy about that label. But the chapter is very thought-provoking. We worrywarts spend a lot of time distressed about terrible but vague outcomes. The advice here is to try and define to yourself what is the worst logical outcome in this situation... face up to it, mentally prepare to accept it if you have to, but then calmly proceed to improve upon the worst.

Related to that is another chapter on cooperating with the inevitable. It's exhausting to think you can control the uncontrollable, you know? I have that problem sometimes. Especially in a COVID world. So this chapter is about stopping that mindset. It doesn't mean giving up when there's a chance to make something better. But, if it's truly something that can't be changed... well, as he says, "No one living has enough emotion and vigour to fight the inevitable and, at the same time, enough left over to create a new life." I'm reviewing the chapter now, and I have to say, it's powerful stuff.

Dale Carnegie includes lots of real-life stories that illustrate what he's talking about. Some of them are very poignant, and some of them seem a little over-hyped. And some of them are just a product of their time. Like the short article, "I Was Acting Like an Hysterical Woman," by Cameron Shipp. Whew. Glad he got some help for that. I guess Hysterical Men hadn't been invented yet.

(Note: There are definitely some instances of gender and racial stereotyping that stand out glaringly to a modern reader.)

But all in all, this was a solid, straightforward read for anxious people, and in my opinion, way more engaging (if also occasionally snort-inducing) than most current books on the subject. So much so that I'm considering getting a hard copy so I can review and highlight some things.]]>

Flavia's story keeps getting bigger and bigger compared to what it was at the start of the series, and this installment is no exception. It's a pretty fast-paced and fascinating read, with a big surprise moment that rears up towards the latter half of the book. I do find the backstory of her family (which started to become a thing a few books back) to be a bit vague and difficult to come to grips with. These are no longer just traditional sleuthing books, as the element of "big conspiracy" has strongly entered the picture. I don't have a clear idea of where things are going or the motivations at work, but the book and the overall series are full of interesting moments, flashes of humor, erudite references, and enough surprises to keep readers on their toes.

<![CDATA[The Lost Language of Oysters (Portuguese Irregular Verbs, #6)]]> 221632739 The latest book in Alexander McCall Smith's entertaining and hilarious Professor von Igelfeld series

Professor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld is not just any German professor - he is the author of that great work of scholarship, Portuguese Irregular Verbs. His eminence in language studies is widely recognised, even if it is rarely acknowledged by his colleague, Professor Detlev-Amadeus Unterholzer, author of a much less important work on the subjunctive. Their rivalry bubbles away under the surface, but is apt to come into the open if something unusual disturbs the calm waters of the institute in Regensburg in which they both work.

One such event is the arrival from New Orleans of two visiting scholars. These ladies, Professor Pom Pom Boisseau, and her friend, Professor Alice Martinique, are both experts in the Provençal language as well as being keen bikers. When they choose to arrive on large, noisy motorbikes, Unterholzer is shocked, but von Igelfeld is rather taken with Pom Pom. In fact, he is very taken with her, even to the extent of going for a ride with her on her motorbike.

Anybody can tell that this infatuation will lead to disappointment, if not worse. But for von Igelfeld, disasters often arrive in twos and threes. The great professor is invited to attend a student occasion in which the old habit of duelling rears its head. He is handed a sword...

Von Igelfeld may suffer humiliation after humiliation, but at the end of it all there is the promise of a visit to Louisiana, a culinary paradise, where important research is being undertaken into communication among oysters...]]>

<![CDATA[The Family Friend (The Ortiz Family #3)]]> 221388394 “Just a short trip to Monte Carlo, they said. “You’ll be back before Christmas, they said.

Well, Carmen Ortiz has been in the French Riviera for weeks now, and there's no end in sight. If she can’t complete her impossible mission, she’ll spend the rest of December in a hotel instead of in Tennessee with her family. She’s not used to asking for help, but when her inconveniently attractive bestie shows up and refuses to let her face the music alone, she could just kiss him. And with the weird way he’s acting , he might not mind

Tim (AKA Beast) has two objectives: get Carmen home to her family for the holidays, and confess the things in his heart that are better shared in person. But when he tracks her down in the glittering nightlife of Monte Carlo, she clearly needs a bodyguard, and he’s the best man for the job. She won’t even consider hopping on a plane—or listening with half a brain to what he wants to tell her—until she completes the secret assignment that’s landed them between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps in the last few days before Christmas.

Join the Ortiz family for the holidays with this final installment in the series, a closed-door Christmas romcom with bodyguards, banter, and true love. Our black cat and golden retriever protagonists must face their feelings, as well as a wee bit of spy action and danger. This romance is kisses only!]]>

Various Alisha 0 review-of-the-year * Drinker of Ink by Shannon Castleton
* All the James Herriot books!
* The Secrets of Ormdale series by Christina Baehr
* The Invention of Charlotte Bronte by Graham Watson

Honorable mention for fun and light:
* A Seasonal Pursuit by Rebecca Connolly
* The Super Big Favor by Nuria Munoz

My unexpected delights of the year were definitely the James Herriot books and the Ormdale books. The James Herriot books because I'm leery of animal stories (mostly too sad), and the Ormdale books because I don't really get thrills from the fantasy genre. AND YET both completely sold me, due to their warmth, loving narration, and groundedness in a pleasant real-life vibe.

This is the year that I exported my entire ŷ library to Storygraph, and have been simultaneously keeping both accounts up-to-date. Every now and then ŷ throws a tech hiccup our way, plus it hasn't really added much in the way of features in a long time, so I was interested to try Storygraph. I like the additional data points it can generate about one's reading habits, and the fact that you can label books as having various "moods", but the social side of it is pretty lackluster so far. It does have the function of doing "buddy reads," but I haven't explored what it allows you to do with them.

Gathering data from Storygraph's year-end wrap up, the author I spent the most time with in 2024 was Agatha Christie, followed by James Herriot and Christina Baehr. I read the most pages in February and November. And evidently I read 73 new-to-me authors, which feels like a lot!

Stats I figured for myself: Out of my 127 books read, 9% were re-reads, about 28% were written by men (a higher number than usual for me, I think), 33% were non-fiction (I'm getting a bit more drawn to non-fiction), and 12% were ARCs.

I've read a little bit less this year than some years, I think largely because I'm allowing myself to get so easily distracted by my phone and social media. Something to ponder... changes need to be made.

In 2025 I'm looking forward to polishing off my current TBR, which includes some more biographies and related works on my beloved Brontes. I'll probably also get around to trying another Trollope at least by Victober--the author who I keep hovering on the verge of liking. And of course, here's hoping that we have a fairly speedy new installment of Emma M. Lion!]]>

<![CDATA[A Seasonal Pursuit (Regency Christmas Brides)]]> 218358457 **Regency Christmas Four festive tales of romance.
'Twas the month before Christmas, and all through the house, four cousins have been told they all need a spouse...

Have yourself a married little Christmas

Rose Portman, determined spinster, has a bit of a predicament. Her great aunt has challenged her to get married before Twelfth Night and promised that, if she does, Rose will inherit the perfect country cottage with the funds to maintain it. Rose has always wanted to get away from London and Society, and this could be her chance! But the catch is that Rose has to attend a holiday house party in York and find a husband among the guests. Worst of all she must marry for love.

Webb Rixton, Lord Downing, is attending a holiday house party hosted by his neighbor, but only because his mother and sister are making him. He knows his young children need a mother, but no one could possibly replace his late wife, so marriage and love are the last things on his mind. Still, he thinks he might have found a friend in the refreshingly frank Miss Portman, and a friend could be just what he needs to return to the land of the living. When she tells him of her situation, and her plot to thwart it, he is determined to help her, setting them both on a path of the most unexpected nature.

Will this season be particularly jolly for Rose and Webb? Or will the weather not be the only thing that is frightful?*Decking the halls has never been quite so jolly in this sweet, snarky, swoonworthy holiday romance. Read as a stand-alone, or enjoy it as the last book in the Regency Christmas Brides series.

<![CDATA[The Titanic Test: A Love Story]]> 220487196 Two childhood best friends. One epic high school test.
Will they change the Titanic's fate, or will it change theirs?

Charlie is a seventeen-year-old Malibu surfer who lives in the moment and is so NOT into time travel. Now she’s facing Windline Academy’s dreaded Junior Year Test, a trip in time designed to mold her into the girl her parents and school want her to be. The rules are no changing history and no interfering with the senior who’ll be sent to report any infractions.

When Charlie learns her test is to sail on the Titanic, she vows to hide out in her cabin. But soon she meets the ship’s colorful passengers and has to choose between her conscience and passing the test. To make matters worse, Quinn, her childhood best friend turned annoying and super popular senior, shows up to keep her on track.

Sparks fly when she and Quinn clash, but soon their perspectives—and their hearts—meld under the Titanic’s stars. Time, they learn, is a tough adversary, and in the end, the Titanic changes Charlie’s future . . . forever.]]>
370 Ann K. Simpson Alisha 4 The premise is that a segment of the population has "time travel" genes, with individuals attending a special school that trains them how to handle this ability. The junior year of high school features a time travel test--an independent assignment in the past. Charlotte ("Charlie") will sail on the Titanic, with instructions to rescue a priceless book that historically ends up at the bottom of the Atlantic.

I liked that the time travel serves the story but doesn't require much technical explanation or additional sci-fi trimmings, so the story can zero right in on the adventure and more importantly, the ethical quandary... Charlie is told not to interfere with major historical events, but experiencing them in real time challenges her feelings about what is the right thing to do. It's quite a gripping YA-style read and I would definitely read more by this author.

<![CDATA[Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Greatest Detective in the World]]> 48836641 From the publication of Agatha Christie’s very first book in 1920 to the release of Sir Kenneth Branagh’s film Death on the Nile , this investigates the phenomenon of Hercule Poirot and celebrates a century of one of the world’s favorite fictional detectives.

Hercule Poirot has had a near-permanent presence in the public eye ever since the 1920 publication of The Mysterious Affair at Styles. The detective who solves diabolical crimes using his “little grey cells has enamored audiences not only in the original novels, short stories, and plays, but also across radio, television, and movies.

From Agatha Christie’s earliest conceptions and publication history, to forays on the stage and screen, the story of Poirot is as fascinating as it is enduring. Mark Aldridge tells this story decade-by-decade, exploring and analyzing Poirot’s many and often wildly different appearances, following the detective to present day when he is enjoying a worldwide renaissance.

Packed with original research, never-before-published correspondence, and images from the Agatha Christie archives. ]]>

If marriage of convenience is one of your top tropes, this book is for you! It's a fun escape into a Regency world with an intelligent and kind heroine. It made for pleasant, cozy reading, and I would say it brings together some of the things I enjoy most about the genre -- likable characters with understandable motives, and well-done tropes without an overabundance of miscommunication. <![CDATA[A Gentleman for Lady Juniper (Clairvoir Castle Romances Book 6)]]> 219793833 A footman turned earl's son and a lady with her nose in a book—could they possibly find love amidst the whispers of the ton?

Lady Juniper Amberton is content to live in the shadows of high society, much preferring the company of a good Gothic novel to the endless parade of suitors. Her creative spirit and quiet charm make her unusual among the ton, but Juniper knows the rules of her daughters of earls marry well, not for love. That is, until the son of an earl—once the humble servant to a duke—steps back into her life.

John "Jack" Sterling has spent years guarding nobility, never imagining he would one day become part of their ranks. Now, elevated to a new social station, Jack finds himself navigating the murky waters of London society, where his family is closely scrutinized. He never expected to cross paths with Lady Juniper as equals, but the same woman who once painted his portrait is now the one captivating his heart.

As their worlds collide once again, Jack and Juniper must walk the fine line between what society demands and what their hearts truly want. But with gossip swirling around Jack’s family and the weight of their past roles looming over them, can they find the courage to rewrite their futures together?

This novel is a sweet Regency romance that can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, but readers of the previous books will delight in seeing familiar faces and settings once more.]]>

Regency & Regicide 213320979
When aspiring young novelist Miss Diana Crewe falls asleep on her manuscript in early nineteenth century England, the last thing she expects is to wake in the middle of the world she’s created…a world in which, she’s horrified to discover, she’s both venerated as a goddess and decried as a villain. Pulled into the story alongside her is her closest childhood friend and rival author, Ignatius (Nash) Sinclair, who has spent the last year keeping Diana at a distance, seeming to prefer the company of his abolitionist friends.

But when the dream doesn’t end as expected and the tumultuous world around Diana and Nash proves to be all too real, the friends must put aside their differences to find a way home…even as Diana’s budding attachment to the dashing outlaw Locke Moray rapidly erodes her desire to leave. But not all heroes are as they seem, and when the characters of Diana’s imagination overstep their bounds and threaten her very life, Diana is forced to realize that the resolution she so deeply desires might have been right in front of her this whole time

<![CDATA[The Way to the Sea: The Forgotten Histories of the Thames Estuary]]> 46139643 Caroline Crampton was born on the Thames Estuary to parents who had sailed there from South Africa in the early 1980s. Having grown up with seafaring legs and a desire to explore, Caroline is both a knowledgeable guide to the most hidden-away parts of this overlooked and unfashionable part of the country, and a persuasive advocate for its significance, both historically and culturally.

As one of the key entrances and exits to England, the estuary has been pivotal to London's economic fortunes and in defining its place in the world. It has also been the entry point for immigrants for generations, yet it has an ambivalent relationship with newcomers, and UKIP's popularity in the area is on the rise. As Caroline navigates the waters of the estuary, she also seeks out its stories: empty warehouses and arsenals; the Thames barrier, which guards the safety of Londoners more precariously than we might; ship wrecks still inhabited by the ghosts of the drowned; vast Victorian pumping stations which continue to carry away the capital's sewage; the river banks, layered with archaeological Anglo-Saxon treasures; literature inspired by its landscape; beacons used for centuries to guide boats through the dark and murky waterways of the estuary; the eerie Maunsell army forts - 24 metre high towers of concrete and steel which were built on concealed sandbanks at the far reaches of the estuary during the Second World War and designed to spot (and shoot) at incoming enemy planes; and the estuary's wildlife and shifting tidal moods.

<![CDATA[The Brontës, My Mother and Me: Forgetful Wanderings of love and loss]]> 215175912 The Brontës, My Mother and Me offers a unique lens to view the experience of caring for a loved one with memory loss at the end of life. It invites insight and fresh thinking for families, nurses, and carers, as well as for all who know and support bereaved children. Woven into the story is an empathic understanding of how the bereft Brontë children saw their world and why this matters today, making this book suitable for Brontë enthusiasts everywhere.

In her new book, Anna Biley walks the hills with Cathy and Heathcliff in Brontë country. Fending off forgetfulness and frailty; this tale of unbearable loss emerges from the labyrinth of memory and fragments of her mother’s final-year diaries. And yet her book is so much more than a tribute to a mother, who is a representative of the resilient, northern women of the war generation. Biley is an astute and passionate reader of the Brontës. This is a coming-of-age story, about the shaking off of traditional female roles, as well as a lens for reading Jane Eyre as the voice of a grieving young girl.

The Rose and the Yew Tree 21112141
Everyone expected Isabella Charteris, beautiful, sheltered and aristocratic, to marry her cousin Rupert when he came back from the War. It would have been such a suitable marriage. How strange then that John Gabriel, an ambitious and ruthless war hero, should appear in her life. For Isabella, the price of love would mean abandoning her dreams of home and happiness forever. For Gabriel, it would destroy his chance of a career and all his ambitions

Agatha Christie’s pseudonym, Mary Westmacott, is definitely worth a read, but prepare yourself for some psychological darkness, broken people, and fewer resolutions than you might expect. Sometimes I struggle to be on board with what she does under this pseudonym, but it’s completely and compulsively page-turning. Her writing as Mary Westmacott is even more addicting than as Agatha Christie.

<![CDATA[The Mother of the Brontës: When Maria Met Patrick]]> 43784230
The chances of Cornish gentlewoman Maria Branwell even meeting the poor Irish curate Patrick Brontë in Regency England, let alone falling passionately in love, were remote.

Yet Maria and Patrick did meet, making a life together as devoted lovers and doting parents in the heartland of the industrial revolution. An unlikely romance and novel wedding were soon followed by the birth of six children. They included Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, the most gifted literary siblings the world has ever known.

Her children inherited her intelligence and wit and wrote masterpieces such as Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Yet Maria has remained an enigma while the fame of her family spread across the world. It is time to bring her out of the shadows, along with her overlooked contribution to the Brontë genius.

Untimely death stalked Maria as it was to stalk all her children. But first there was her fascinating life's story, told here for the first time by Sharon Wright.]]>

A quick read. Sad but effective. Really hard to rate. This one is something of a psychological study picture, if you will, a smug middle-aged woman who has emotionally browbeaten her husband and now-grown children into what is “good for them regardless of their own individuality. Now picture her waiting for days in the middle of a desert for a train that doesn’t come she reads all her books, she writes all her letters, and finally all that’s left to do is to think. It sounds so ordinary, but it’s actually a kind of horror story in its own way.

<![CDATA[The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Caused an Epidemic of Mental Illness]]> 171681821
A must-read for all parents: the generation-defining investigation into the collapse of youth mental health in the era of smartphones, social media, and big tech—and a plan for a healthier, freer childhood.

“With tenacity and candor, Haidt lays out the consequences that have come with allowing kids to drift further into the virtual world . . . While also offering suggestions and solutions that could help protect a new generation of kids. —Shannon Carlin, ,i>TIME, 100 Must-Read Books of 2024

After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood has interfered with children’s social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.

Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He diagnoses the “collective action problems that trap us, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

Haidt has spent his career speaking truth backed by data in the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the public health emergency faced by Gen Z. We cannot afford to ignore his findings about protecting our children—and ourselves—from the psychological damage of a phone-based life.]]>

The Floating Admiral 719399
In 1931 Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and 10 other crime writers from the newly formed Detection Club collaborated in publishing a unique crime novel. In a literary game of consequences, each author would write one chapter, leaving G.K. Chesterton to write a typically paradoxical prologue and Anthony Berkeley to tie up all the loose ends. In addition, all of the authors provided their own solutions in sealed envelopes, all of which appeared at the end of the book, with Agatha Christie's ingenious conclusion acknowledged at the time to be 'enough to make the book worth buying on its own'. The authors of this novel are G.K. Chesterton, Canon Victor Whitechurch, G.D.H. Cole and Margaret Cole, Henry Wade, Agatha Christie, John Rhode, Milward Kennedy, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ronald Knox, Freeman Wills Crofts, Edgar Jepson, Clemence Dane and Anthony Berkeley.
