Draw a circle... place a dead leaf in the center... sprinkle some salt... recite a little Latin... add a drop of blood...

Maybe that last part isn’t exactly simple. Yet somehow it feels right to Silla Kennicott. And nothing in her life has felt remotely right since her parents horrific deaths. She’s willing to do anything to uncover the truth about her family—even try a few spells from the mysterious book that arrived on her doorstep ... and spill some blood.

The book isn’t the only recent arrival in Silla’s life. There’s Nick Pardee, the new guy next door who may have seen Silla casting a spell. She’s not sure what he saw and is afraid to find out. But as they spend more time together, Silla realizes this may not be Nick’s first encounter with Blood Magic. Brought together by a combination of fate and chemistry, Silla and Nick can’t deny their attraction. And they can’t ignore the dark presence lurking nearby—waiting to reclaim the book and all its power.]]>

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.

It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans—except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. Join Lennie on this heartbreaking and hilarious journey of profound sorrow and mad love, as she makes colossal mistakes and colossal discoveries, as she traipses through band rooms and forest bedrooms and ultimately right into your heart.

288 Jandy Nelson 0803734956 Jackson 4 I think grieving books are difficult because grieving is so different for everyone-- and thus, what one reader might relate to another might not understand at all. I think that Nelson hit the nail on the head with Lennie's grief. It's real, palpable, intense enough that even someone who grieves differently will understand Lennie, her anguish, her motivations, and her mistakes. I was so overwhelmed with her emotion that it became difficult to separate my own responses to the plot from her. Amazing.
I also adored the poems sprinkled throughout the book-- it was an excellent way of explaining Baily and their relationship without being blunt and overly direct. They were beautifully written and match the lyrical style of the book perfectly.
I had only one qualm-- the characters felt very dated. Something about them felt old-fashioned, like their modern slang had to be edited in instead of existing naturally. I don't know the author, but would be willing to guess she was a teen in the 70's or 80's. It helped when I gave in and just imagined the story taking place in the mid seventies instead of now.
BUT, that really wasn't enough to detract from the power of the story. Again-- I loved it, and I think it'll be the type of book that gets read both in schools and under the covers by book-loving teens.]]>

Once Was Lost 6287072
Samara Taylor used to believe in miracles. She used to believe in a lot of things. As a pastor's kid, it's hard not to buy in to the idea of the perfect family, a loving God, and amazing grace. But lately, Sam has a lot of reason to doubt. Her mother lands in rehab after a DUI and her father seems more interested in his congregation than his family. When a young girl in her small town is kidnapped, the local tragedy overlaps with Sam's personal one, and the already-worn thread of faith holding her together begins to unravel.

In her third novel, acclaimed author Sara Zarr examines the coexistence of affliction and hope, and what happens when everything you thought you believed---about God, about your family, about yourself---is transformed.]]>

Deep inside the great Oak lies a dying faery realm, bursting with secrets instead of magic. Long ago the faeries mysteriously lost their magic. Robbed of their powers, they have become selfish and dull-witted. Now their numbers are dwindling and their very survival is at stake.

Only one young faery—Knife—is determined to find out where her people's magic has gone and try to get it back. Unlike her sisters, Knife is fierce and independent. She's not afraid of anything—not the vicious crows, the strict Faery Queen, or the fascinating humans living nearby. But when Knife disobeys the Faery Queen and befriends a human named Paul, her quest becomes more dangerous than she realizes. Can Knife trust Paul to help, or has she brought the faeries even closer to the brink of destruction?

<![CDATA[Little Women (Little Women, #1)]]> 1934 This is an alternate cover edition of ISBN 9780451529305.

Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott’s most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War.

It is no secret that Alcott based Little Women on her own early life. While her father, the freethinking reformer and abolitionist Bronson Alcott, hobnobbed with such eminent male authors as Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Louisa supported herself and her sisters with "woman’s work, including sewing, doing laundry, and acting as a domestic servant. But she soon discovered she could make more money writing. Little Women brought her lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl’s book her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America.

Into the Wild 1845 Librarian's Note: An alternate cover edition can be found here

In April, 1992, a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, a party of moose hunters found his decomposed body. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.

Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and, unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw away the maps. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.]]>

563 Kami Garcia 0316042676 Jackson 5 I hate it when books are long for the sake of being long-- if I'm going to read about a character going through each step in the process of making cereal, there'd better be a point to it. What's fantastic about this book is there IS a point to it-- every word in the book is valuable. It's written with the succinctness of a short book, yet still goes on for 600 pages. Which means that's a powerful, beautiful, and well-planned 600 pages.
The characters are amazingly rounded and realistic; the love story doesn't go without angst/frustration, which makes it one of the best YA love stories I've read in ages. I LIVED for those romantic, sweet scenes that exist just often enough to keep me clambering for the next one. The magic aspect of the world is well built and heavily detailed in a way that makes it all the more believable. The real gem of this book, however, is the setting. As someone from the deep south, I'm always mixed on the way we're portrayed in books. BEAUTIFUL CREATURES simultaneously shows the grace, history, and beauty of the south along with the often irritating small-mindedness that infects some areas.
I will confess that I felt the power of the love story dropped a little in the final chapter, but I think this may just be my interpretation. There were also a few very minor unfulfilled character development moments. But it wasn't enough for me to not give this book five stars-- overall, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES is a glorious love story spun in the rich, mysterious, and magical world of the deep South. It's sure to be a huge hit-- how could it not be?]]>

My Sister’s Keeper 10917 New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age 13 she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate—a life and a role that she has never challenged ... until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister—and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.]]>

Since I'm typically a YA-only kind of girl, I was surprised to love this book. It was fantastically written and I admire any author who can just point of view, time, and scene as quickly and seamlessly as Picoult does. Sometimes the symbolism was a little heavy handed, and things got wordy/unnecessarily long at times, and the end was meaningful yet unsatisfying to me-- I understand WHY Picoult made the choice she made, but also felt it cheated me out of the ending the book had been leading up to. Still, fantastic overall, so I have to give it five stars.

While she doesn’t take home the prize that night, Diablo discovers to her surprise the act of stripping is an absolute thrill. So Celeste crafts a plan—she'll sacrifice her chocolate cookie obsession, lose weight, and shrink right out of the competition.

What follows is a series of escapades both hilarious and horrifying, as our heroine tries to hold her head high both on the catwalk and off—and learns to show the world who she is from the inside out.]]>
