“Subversive in the best possible way. —Bill McKibben, New York Times –bestselling author

The Abundance of Less captures the texture of sustainable lives well lived in these ten profiles of ordinary—yet exceptional—men and women who left behind mainstream existences in urban Japan to live surrounded by the luxuries of nature, art, friends, delicious food, and an abundance of time. Drawing on traditional Eastern spiritual wisdom and culture, these pioneers describe the profound personal transformations they underwent as they escaped the stress, consumerism, busyness, and dependence on technology of modern life.

This intimate and evocative book tells of their fulfilling lives as artists, philosophers, and farmers who rely on themselves for happiness and sustenance. By inviting readers to enter into the essence of these individuals days, Couturier shows us how we too can bring more meaning and richness to our own lives.]]>

Drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden, first introduced in The Icewind Dale Trilogy, quickly became one of the fantasy genre’s standout characters. With Homeland, Salvatore pulls back the curtain to reveal the startling tale of how this hero came to be—how this one lone drow walked out of the shadowy depths of the Underdark; how he left behind an evil society and a family that wanted him dead.

As the third son of Mother Malice and weaponmaster Zaknafein, Drizzt Do’Urden is meant to be sacrificed to Lolth, the evil Spider Queen, per drow tradition. But with the unexpected death of his older brother, young Drizzt is spared—and, as a result, further ostracized by his family. As Drizzt grows older, developing his swordsmanship skills and studying at the Academy, he begins to realize that his idea of good and evil does not match up with those of his fellow drow. Can Drizzt stay true to himself in a such an unforgiving, unprincipled world?

<![CDATA[The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future]]> 12605157
“Thoughtful, funny, and compulsively readable, this guide shows how ordinary people can build solid livings, with independence and purpose, on their own terms.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Happiness Project

Still in his early thirties, Chris Guillebeau completed a tour of every country on earth and yet he’s never held a “real job or earned a regular paycheck. Rather, he has a special genius for turning ideas into income, and he uses what he earns both to support his life of adventure and to give back.

Chris identified 1,500 individuals who have built businesses earning $50,000 or more from a modest investment (in many cases, $100 or less), and focused on the 50 most intriguing case studies. In nearly all cases, people with no special skills discovered aspects of their personal passions that could be monetized, and were able to restructure their lives in ways that gave them greater freedom and fulfillment.

Here, finally, distilled into one easy-to-use guide, are the most valuable lessons from those who’ve learned how to turn what they do into a gateway to self-fulfillment.It’s all about finding the intersection between your “expertise”—even if you don’t consider it such—and what other people will pay for. You don’t need an MBA, a business plan or even employees. All you need is a product or service that springs from what you love to do anyway, people willing to pay, and a way to get paid.

Not content to talk in generalities, Chris tells you exactly how many dollars his group of unexpected entrepreneurs required to get their projects up and running; what these individuals did in the first weeks and months to generate significant cash; some of the key mistakes they made along the way, and the crucial insights that made the business stick.Among Chris’s key principles: If you’re good at one thing, you’re probably good at something else; never teach a man to fish sell him the fish instead; and in the battle between planning and action, action wins.

In ancient times, people who were dissatisfied with their lives dreamed of finding magic lamps, buried treasure, or streets paved with gold.Today, we know that it’s up to us to change our lives. And the best part is, if we change our own life, we can help others change theirs. This remarkable book will start you on your way.]]>

Norse Mythology 37903770 This is an alternate cover edition for ISBN 9780393356182

Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose, these gods emerge with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.]]>

I find nothing negative about this book! To criticize these tales, whatever liberties Mr. Gaiman might have taken in retelling it, is to criticize Norse mythology itself - and while it may not be for everyone, it was great for me.

<![CDATA[Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us]]> 3828382
Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they're enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming. And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals—people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.

If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a "sheepwalker"—someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don't do very well these days.

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers. . . . It's not easy, but it's easier than you think.]]>

<![CDATA[The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2)]]> 1215032 There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

My name is Kvothe.
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.

So begins the tale of a hero told from his own point of view a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man's Fear, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's Road.

All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. Along the way, Kvothe is put on trial by the legendary Adem mercenaries, is forced to reclaim the honor of the Edema Ruh, and travels into the Fae realm. There he meets Felurian, the faerie woman no man can resist, and who no man has ever survived ... until Kvothe.

In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. <![CDATA[Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time]]> 84699
Climb the ladder to personal success?

The secret, master networker Keith Ferrazzi claims, is in reaching out to other people. As Ferrazzi discovered early in life, what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships—so that everyone wins.

In Never Eat Alone , Ferrazzi lays out the specific steps—and inner mindset—he uses to reach out to connect with the thousands of colleagues, friends, and associates on his Rolodex, people he has helped and who have helped him.

The son of a small-town steelworker and a cleaning lady, Ferrazzi first used his remarkable ability to connect with others to pave the way to a scholarship at Yale, a Harvard MBA, and several top executive posts. Not yet out of his thirties, he developed a network of relationships that stretched from Washington’s corridors of power to Hollywood’s A-list, leading to him being named one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 and selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the Davos World Economic Forum.

Ferrazzi's form of connecting to the world around him is based on generosity, helping friends connect with other friends. Ferrazzi distinguishes genuine relationship-building from the crude, desperate glad-handling usually associated with “networking. He then distills his system of reaching out to people into practical, proven principles. Among them:

Don’t keep score: It’s never simply about getting what you want. It’s about getting what you want and making sure that the people who are important to you get what they want, too.

“Ping constantly: The Ins and Outs of reaching out to those in your circle of contacts all the time—not just when you need something.

Never eat alone: The dynamics of status are the same whether you’re working at a corporation or attending a society event “invisibility is a fate worse than failure.

In the course of the book, Ferrazzi outlines the timeless strategies shared by the world’s most connected individuals, from Katherine Graham to Bill Clinton, Vernon Jordan to the Dalai Lama.

Chock full of specific advice on handling rejection, getting past gatekeepers, becoming a “conference commando, and more, Never Eat Alone is destined to take its place alongside How to Win Friends and Influence People as an inspirational classic.]]>

Shantaram 33600
So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay's hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.]]>

Life's A Pitch 818555
Life’s a Pitch is the ultimate how-to book–a mixture of mechanics and magic. Nothing like it has been written before. A mixture of mentoring, graphics, anthropology, market research and modern Machiavellianism, this book is a preparation for success. So whether at a sales conference in corporate conference room hell or over lunch at a glamorous meeting, it’s a drama. It is business, but it’s also theatre. It’s not about transferring information; it’s about transferring power. And the results of a successful pitch are quite simply money and power.

Part inspirational manual for business, part guidebook to a successful and happy social life, Life’s a Pitch is an accumulation of half-century of (mostly successful) pitching wisdom by the authors. Groundbreaking and genre-busting, it will transform forever how we think about the art of persuasion.]]>

Takes a lot for me to hit 5 stars. My criteria for that is whether the book has, at the risk of sounding dramatic, changed me in some way. Patrick Rothfuss's writings have in fact changed some of my perceptions of not only fantasy novels (he breaks a few conventions, like chapter length) but a little of real life too. I'm a bit more attentive to the body language I exude, and pay closer attention to that of others, for instance.

But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the military's purpose. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter seeks to control the political process, to become a ruler. Valentine's abilities turn more toward the subtle control of the beliefs of commoner and elite alike, through powerfully convincing essays. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails.]]>

<![CDATA[Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life]]> 13013556 In the midseventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away."

Emmy and Grammy Award winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been a writer. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written.

At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes.

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times - the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the seventies.

Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. Born Standing Up is a superb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.

4 Steve Martin Jesse 4
The thing about Steve Martin's stuff is that he was ground-breaking, inventing a new definition of comedy, and as such was a major influence on many other comedic greats that would arise after him. I still think his comedy holds up, but for those who think otherwise, the important thing is that he changed the rules and challenged how stand up comedy could be done. In other words, (especially) for the time, he was awesome.

Learning more of Mr. Martin's backstory and family life was interesting as well, and he gives a real genuine glimpse of what comedians face even today. There was a rather heartwarming ending to this memoir as well, which I wasn't entirely prepared for - "real life" stories always tend to not end happily - but I'm glad to say I smiled throughout most of this book, and laughed plenty of times along the way.

Bonus points for having listened to the audiobook, voiced by Steve Martin himself, with some charming banjo solos between chapters. I dug it, and you ought to dig it too.]]>

<![CDATA[Religion for Atheists: A Non-Believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion]]> 12576334
Religion for Atheists suggests that rather than mocking religions, agnostics and atheists should instead steal from them because they're packed with good ideas on how we might live and arrange our societies. Blending deep respect with total impiety, Alain (a non-believer himself) proposes that we should look to religions for insights into, among other concerns, how to:

- build a sense of community

- make our relationships last

- overcome feelings of envy and inadequacy

- escape the twenty-four hour media

- go travelling

- get more out of art, architecture and music

- and create new businesses designed to address our emotional needs.

For too long non-believers have faced a stark choice between either swallowing lots of peculiar doctrines or doing away with a range of consoling and beautiful rituals and ideas. At last, in Religion for Atheists, Alain has fashioned a far more interesting and truly helpful alternative.]]>

The land is in upheaval.

The forest grows out of control. The mountains erupt. The seas boil. The swamps spew acid, and the plains turn to desert. Yet, amidst the turmoil there is civilization, brutal and unforgiving. Pit fighters battle to the death before tremendous crowds, making some rich, while others lose everything in one stroke of a sword.

<![CDATA[The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1)]]> 127455 Ocean's Eleven, and entirely enthralling...

An orphan's life is harsh and often short in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains a man who is neither blind nor a priest.

A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected "family" of orphans a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards. Under his tutelage, Locke grows to lead the Bastards, delightedly pulling off one outrageous confidence game after another. Soon he is infamous as the Thorn of Camorr, and no wealthy noble is safe from his sting.

Passing themselves off as petty thieves, the brilliant Locke and his tightly knit band of light-fingered brothers have fooled even the criminal underworld's most feared ruler, Capa Barsavi. But there is someone in the shadows more powerful and more ambitious than Locke has yet imagined.

Known as the Gray King, he is slowly killing Capa Barsavi's most trusted men and using Locke as a pawn in his plot to take control of Camorr's underworld. With a bloody coup under way threatening to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the Gray King at his own brutal game or die trying...

Here is the third volume in George R.R. Martin's magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. Together, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, victim of the sorceress who holds him in her thrall. Young Robb still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world. And as opposing forces manoeuver for the final showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost limits of civilization, accompanied by a horde of mythical Others—a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords...]]>

The woe of the Starks continue in the third installment of this hyper-famous series. Only at the conclusion did I feel "rewarded" for reading this, with interesting stuff finally happening. Since picking up the series, I've been trying really hard to figure out why I like it, and why I don't like it.

Since I started reading SoS before S3 of the HBO Series came out, I was happy to feel more in the know. Watching the series BEFORE reading the books was a terrible mistake, though that was not what impacted my personal rating for any of the books read thus far. Each has their merits; the show does certain things better (trims the fat and usually delivers concise storytelling), while the book offers a much deeper, richer understanding of how big and ..err, deep, this world really is.

If you're a fan of witnessing good guys get betrayed, morally ambiguous guys get ahead, and evil guys occasionally get punished, this book series is for you.

Also, minor geeky sidenote, this book further fuels my theory that George R. R. Martin has a love affair with the word "black." While I was listening to this book at my dayjob (and they think I'm working, haha-ha!) I decided to mark down how many times something - rooms, expressions, armor, names... weather ... - was described simply as black. Ended up with about 569.]]>

As I read this, I had a very difficult time trying to understand who the audience of this book was meant to be. Judging from the language used (in the beginning) by the characters, I was thinking older-than-young-adult. Judging from the subject matter (everything is centered around pop culture of the 80s), you'd think it would appeal primarily to people who'd seen 30-40 winters.

Judging from the way things are described, that is, the primary narrative ... I still can't tell if it's meant to be read by young children who are incapable of inferring simple connections between statements, or if the world and how things work in it is being told in such a way as for elders, who have NEVER touched a PC or seen a videogame to be able to understand what's going on.

Now, as for the story itself - a number of interesting and original ideas, but strung together by some very flimsy plot strings, and as I read I had no fear for the characters. First, the story starts off with "Let me tell you how I won." Second, the main character has the answer to everything, and this is demonstrated time and time again - so much deus-ex-machina and utter convenience that my eyes were sore from all the rolling. Third, everything takes place within a digital realm; if you die, the worst that happens is you lose your character and start over. The stakes were as simple as: Saving the crutch upon which the entire world leaned at the expense of people, the earth, and everything else. If the bad guys won, then people would have to start paying to access the OASIS. Which eventually means that many people will log out permanently, and start doing things in the real world instead.

Oh, the horror.

Most of the time I was reading, I kept asking myself, "Why is it really worth saving?"

That being said. There were tons of pop references that, for once, I actually caught, as modern society confused me. Some parts genuinely made me laugh out loud, and a few very real topics were addressed (escapism, environmentalism, our increasing tendency to stare down at our phones instead of each other). But in spite of that, this book is to gamers as the movie Richie Rich is to poor kids; a ridiculous fantasy based on little more than a power trip.]]>

Second, the main character has the answer to everything, and this is demonstrated time and time again - so much deus-ex-machina and utter convenience that my eyes were sore from all the rolling.

But in spite of that, this book is to gamers as the movie Richie Rich is to poor kids; a ridiculous fantasy based on little more than a power trip.

<![CDATA[Perfume: The Story of a Murderer]]> 343 An alternative cover edition for this ISBN can be found here.

An acclaimed bestseller and international sensation, Patrick Suskind's classic novel provokes a terrifying examination of what happens when one man's indulgence in his greatest passion—his sense of smell—leads to murder.

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift—an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and fresh-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brilliance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.]]>

Who this book is for: people with a dark sense of humor, fans of stories about criminals or estranged folks, anyone remotely interested in [post-Revolution] France, or anyone who thinks they'd enjoy a very different story. It's a story about a murderer, but I wouldn't call it a murder mystery nor a horror. There're some (possibly) fantastical elements to it, but there's no real indication that this is fantasy or paranormal.

This book is about the power of scent, as one might deduce from the title, and a Parisian's struggle from birth to go through life with an inhumanly acute sense of smell - and an excellent memory and hatred of humanity to go with it. In describing the protagonist/villain Grenouille ("grr-noo-ee") to a friend of mine, I told of how he did not grasp the concept of spoken language until later childhood. Nouns such as milk made no sense to Grenouille, for milk had a distinct odor yes, but that odor was different depending on the cow, the food eaten by the cow, or even how spoiled the milk was throughout the day if left out. How could one word mean something as complicated as milk?

Much like categorizing the book.

The author describes the world as seen by Grenouille through his nose, and it is a miserable, stinking world to be sure, populated by pitiful, stinking people. While most of the novel describes Grenouille's life story, and those folk unfortunate enough to have anything to do with him, it is anything but slow-paced. Several times as I was reading I almost began to think "okay, hurry it up," but the story would turn or develop in such a satisfactory way before I would ever feel such impatience.

In other words, the storytelling of Perfume is fun, the pacing was perfect for me, and the subject matter was fascinating. A refreshing, interesting bit of literature that I'll be thinking about even as I try to get through A Storm Of Swords.

Go read it, and forever rethink how you (and your characters) sniff the world around.]]>

This book was given to me as a gift, with the hope that in it I might discover a whiff of inspiration. Not only was I happy to find this to be true, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of writing and the simple joy of simply enjoying the style - to say nothing of the content. We'll get to that in a moment.

I've come to the conclusion that had anyone else written it, or had this not been written as lovingly as it was, then the reviews would plummet. It'd be "just a story about some self-hating pedophile."

So if I can write a story about someone engaged in a romantic relationship with a tortoise, will it be accepted as long as I write it awesomely? Get outta here.

Overall this book had its moments, but in the end it left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't feel like I'd grown, or that I'd learned something. I didn't even feel "more cultured" or whatever because it was a book that everyone else read. I just felt kinda relieved that it was over.]]>

I happen to really like Cory J. Herndon's work, and I also happen to really enjoy a number of works by Scott McGough. Having read many (but not nearly all, in fact probably less than half) of Magic: The Gathering novels, you see his name around.

Magic novels are fun because they immerse you in a myriad of settings, and though I can't say Lorwyn is one of my preferred settings, it was a fun ride. I couldn't necessarily recognize who wrote what as I was reading, except for the occasional "Herndon flair" (that is, a subtle dose of humor that I so adore him for). As for the setting, eh, not really my first choice, but I figured I'd give it a shot since I admired both writers.

The result was something that wasn't bad, but I really feel like could've been done better. If you want a quick adventure into a pastoral world told with little detail into the characters or their respective cultures (save the stinking elves), then you'll like this. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

One night, all the animals at Mr. Jones' Manor Farm assemble in a barn to hear old Major, a pig, describe a dream he had about a world where all animals live free from the tyranny of their human masters. Old Major dies soon after the meeting, but the animals inspired by his philosophy of Animalism plot a rebellion against Jones.

Two pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, prove themselves important figures and planners of this dangerous enterprise. When Jones forgets to feed the animals, the revolution occurs, and Jones and his men are chased off the farm. Manor Farm is renamed Animal Farm, and the Seven Commandments of Animalism are painted on the barn wall...]]>

<![CDATA[A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2)]]> 10572
It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Here is the second volume in George R.R. Martin magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R.R. Martin stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.]]>

It took me over a month to complete the audiobook. I don't claim to be very well-read, but I know what I like, and while I do respect the effort that the author put into this, I really don't think that Clash of Kings is an good example of what he can do. It honestly felt like a relief when it was over, and I hate to think that way.

As I was going through it, I wondered to myself if I was a madman for thinking the opinion I was forming; then after reading a few of the lower-star reviews here on GoodReads, I find that other people can describe my exact issues better than I was able to articulate. Why bother reading? Because Mr. Martin is considered a great, and I ought to see what all the hubbub is about. I did watch the HBO series first, which I know affects things, so taking that into account I'm rather eager to read Book 3 before watching Season 3. However, there are considerable differences (as might be expected) and that's half the fun of reading/watching something of the same name.

I'd like to point to fellow GoodReaders John Wiswell and Jonathan (you'll see they each gave two stars as well) for basically stating my same opinion. However, I'd also like to say that after reading this, I've come to despise the use of the word "black" as an adjective. People wear 'the black,' there's a character named Blackfish, people walk into rooms and the darkness is black, the attack outside the city is in the blackwater, people's expression's are always black of fury. Even at the end, one of the final lines is "All was black, and still, and black, and cold, and black, and dead, and black." I kept thinking to myself please somebody give him a thesaurus.

But other parts were excellent. Inflated prose describing characters I can't relate to and honestly don't care about (I can't stand Danaerys, Arya, Theon, Sansa) aside, the extensive cast feels relatively believable, and a number of them actually have interesting personality traits. Sadly though, it's difficult to think of the merits of this work when I emerged feeling a little like one of the abused whores that the author so enjoys describing to us.

Do yourself the honor of reading it, though. Word has it the series picks up, and I'm willing to give the benefit of a doubt that something from this book actually means something later.

This book was a chore.

It took me over a month to complete the audiobook. I don't claim to be very well-read, but I know what I like, and while I do respect the effort that the author put into this, I really don't think that Clash of Kings is an good example of what he can do. It honestly felt like a relief when it was over, and I hate to think that way.

<![CDATA[World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War]]> 8908
Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, "By excluding the human factor, aren't we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn't the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as 'the living dead'?"
