One of my all-time favorite books. I just love the feel and tone of this novel. I can taste the booze, I can smell the cigarettes...it always makes me want to drink, smoke and dress in good clothing. This is about my 80th reading of The Secret History. It gets better each time. The narrator is so great and I secretly love him. What is it about? It's about Greek tragedy, groups of friends that know better, very smart people who know better, autumn, winter, spring thaw, love, hate, booze, cigarettes and murder. My favorite part is the narrator staying behind during winter break and almost freezing to death in his "rental" Goddamn I love that...the act of trying to find someplace warm to stay, right up until the last minute...and shaking so hard with cold that you just fall asleep, exhausted. LOVE it. I bought it when it first came out, and it had that lovely clear plastic cover. I lent it out...never got it back. I finally found a first edition at my used book store, however, it does not have the plastic covering:::snif::::I'd be willing to buy another first edition..WITH the plastic covering. I think I re-read this book every year and every year I find more things to love about it.

A string of homicides is mirroring the author's macabre stories.

And Genevieve O'Brien's mother is next.

Genevieve knows all about nightmares. She herself survived two months as a psychopath's prisoner. And now this new menace stalks the city. Spooked by the bizarre slayings, she turns to P.I. Joe Connolly, her past rescuer, friend and...hopefully something more, if he would just quit avoiding her.

At first Joe isn't even sure there is a case. But the body count rises, and it's clear that a twisted killer is on the loose. Even more unsettling is the guidance he starts receiving from beyond the grave. People he knows to be dead are appearing, offering him clues and leads, and warning of some terrible danger ahead.

But can even the spirits stay the hand of a madman bent on murder?]]>

A fine mystery/fantasy book about a social worker who finds herself in the middle of a serial killer investigation. A serial killer who bases his kills on Edgar Allen Poe stories. Quite frankly, there were too many characters to keep track of and the Poe aspect was not too noticable. I think that could have been played with just a bit more. I liked the character of Genevieve O'Brien, she was very well written.

Almond on personal “Why, exactly, did I feel it would be ‘sexy and ‘hot to have my girlfriend wax my chest? I can offer no good answer to this question today. I could offer no good answer at the time.
On “To be a fan is to live in a condition of willed helplessness. We are (for the most part) men who sit around and watch other men run and leap and sweat and grapple each other. It is a deeply homoerotic pattern of conduct, often interracial in nature, and essentially humiliating.

A strange and wonderful book. What the HECK was this book about? It was about good and evil. In this novel, who is good...who is evil? I'm not even sure! It reminded me a big of 12 Monkeys (simian reference just a coininkydink or IS it?) Jane Charlotte is a woman apprehended for murder and is held for psychiatric review...she says she is a member of a secret organization, The Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons, whose sole purpose is to kill "Bad Monkey's"...people who are evil, mainly pedophiles. As the doctor reviews her case file, "Jane" takes us back through her indocturnation as an agent and tells of her relationship with her brother Phil, who may or may not have been abducted as a child. The twists and turns are fun and what I wouldn't give for a gun that fires coronary infarctions. I basically read this on a plane ride to and from Dallas.

You'd think by now, every way/option would have been covered. Well, Junot Diaz has had his way with the written word and it's original. A brilliant tale told through different view points, along with footnotes from the "author" (my favorite). These footnotes are morality tales, history lessons, comedy routines or just plain ol' asides which are, most of the time, hilarious. I want a whole book of footnotes.

People of the Book 1379961 The New Yorker) novel by Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks follows a rare manuscript through centuries of exile and war.
Inspired by a true story, "People of the Book" is a novel of sweeping historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity by an acclaimed and beloved author.
Called "a tour de force" by the San Francisco Chronicle, this ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in fifteenth-century Spain.

When it falls to Australian rare book expert Hanna Heath to conserve this priceless work, the tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—a butterfly wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock the book’s deep mysteries and unexpectedly plunges Hanna into the intrigues of fine art forgers and ultra-nationalist fanatics.

I knew Ms. Brooks wouldn't let me down. I knew when I read this, her latest, I would be entertained by brilliant story telling. Hannah Heath, an Austrailian rare book expert is charged with restoring a valuable Jewish religious book, the Sarajevo Haggadah, in war ravaged Bosnia after the war has ended. She finds debris in the binding, including salt, a white hair, a moth, a wine(blood?) stain and valuable elements of the volumn ars missing, like clips for the binding and parts of the illumination are puzzling like the African woman in one of the paintings. After we are introducted to Hannah, you learn the history of each peice of debris, you learn what happened to the clips and you find out exactly who the African woman is. Wow, wow WOW. Just amazing. What story is my favorite? Who can pick. Geraldine Brooks maintains her status as one of my favorite authors.

The Book of Lies 3202905
In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world's most famous murder. But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history.
In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest. While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world's greatest hero: Superman. And like Cain's murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found.

Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his own family tragedy: his long-missing father has been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel's 1932 murder. But soon after their surprising reunion, Cal and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the ancient markings of Cain.

So begins the chase for the world's first murder weapon. It is a race that will pull Cal back into his own past even as it propels him forward through the true story of Cain and Abel, an eighty-year-old unsolvable puzzle, and the deadly organization known for the past century as the Leadership.

What does Cain, history's greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world's greatest hero? And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? This is the mystery at the heart of Brad Meltzer's new thriller.

I was sucked immediately into this book. What great story telling...it reminded me a bit of my favorite Michael Chabon books. The story of how Cain, God, Hitler and Superman can be intertwined is such a brilliant idea because it sounds so preposterous. Believe me, it's not. The "on-the-run" aspect of the story was so much fun since the character was an ex-Fed ~ he knew all the angles...that's such a nice twist. The characters were fully realized and you really did feel for everyone...including the bad guy(s)? at times.

<![CDATA[The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death: Reflections on Revenge, Germophobia, and Laser Hair Removal]]> 2029834 Laurie Notaro has an uncanny ability to attract insanity–and leave readers doubled over with laughter. In The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death, she experiences the popular phenomenon of laser hair removal (because at least one of her chins should be stubble-free); bemoans the scourge of the Open Mouth Coughers on America’s airplanes; welcomes the newest ex-con (yay, a sex offender!) to her neighborhood; and watches, against her own better judgment, every Discovery Health Channel special on parasites and tapeworms that has ever aired–resulting in an overwhelming fear that a worm the size of a python will soon come a-knocking on her back door.

<![CDATA[How Dolly Parton Saved My Life]]> 2728475
But flouting the traditions and expectations of Southern society turns out to be more complicated than they ever anticipated. Even as the pressure of running a business bonds them together, the realities of managing real life threaten to tear the whole thing apart. As financial woes, personal hurts, and family troubles test the strength of their business and their friendship, they discover that sisterly support and lots of heartfelt prayer just might be the only way to survive.

Full of sass, grit, and good old-fashioned faith, How Dolly Parton Saved My Life is a hilarious and poignant look at friendship with a distinctly Southern flair.]]>

<![CDATA[Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, #4)]]> 1162543 "Don't be afraid," I murmured. "We belong together."
I was abruptly overwhelmed by the truth of my own words.
This moment was so perfect, so right, there was no way to doubt it.
His arms wrapped around me,
holding me against him....
It felt like every nerve ending in my body was a live wire.
"Forever," he agreed.

WHEN YOU LOVED THE ONE WHO WAS KILLING YOU, IT LEFT YOU NO OPTIONS. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?

TO BE IRREVOCABLY IN LOVE WITH A VAMPIRE is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs.

NOW THAT BELLA HAS MADE HER DECISION, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella's life - first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse - seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed... forever?

THE ASTONISHING, BREATHLESSLY anticipated conclusion to the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.]]>

Meeting and learning about the other vampires was very interesting...and let's face it, it would have been more interesting if they played more of a roll in the story...(like I thought it was going to be...I thought Tanya was going to have some sort of hold upon Edward) Oh well.

Other things I hated:

Edward gnawing away to get the abomination out of Bella :gah: I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
Not delving into how Rosalie feels about the whole baby thing
The birth itself...horrendous. (Don't write about the actual sex act but have a detailed graphic birthing scene...yeah,that makes sense. This may be a good thing for teens, however...I'd NEVER want to give birth after reading BD.

What? Huh??? I'm just stunned...what was Stephanie Meyer thinking? The Twilight series is a series about young love that is not meant to be...when did it turn into a straight out horror/gore novel? Don't get me wrong, I love horror stories...but not when it's placed in a young adult love story. I know the average reader of Twilight is not a horror/fantasy genre lover. That is not what is expected from Twilight. What IS expected is love, handsome vampires and angst. Not strange alien birth and gross out moments of distended bellies. Sitcoms "Jump the Shark" when they "bring in a kid". Brady Bunch, Growing Pains, on and on. Gross. Well...Twilight has "jumped the shark".

<![CDATA[I Was Told There'd Be Cake: Essays]]> 2195289 From the author of the novel, The Clasp, hailed by Michael Chabon, Heidi Julavits, and J. Courtney Sullivan. Wry, hilarious, and profoundly genuine, this debut collection of literary essays from Sloane Crosley is a celebration of fallibility and haplessness in all their glory.

From despoiling an exhibit at the Natural History Museum to provoking the ire of her first boss to siccing the cops on her mysterious neighbor, Crosley can do no right despite the best of intentions -- or perhaps because of them. Together, these essays create a startlingly funny and revealing portrait of a complex and utterly recognizable character who aims for the stars but hits the ceiling, and the inimitable city that has helped shape who she is. I Was Told There'd Be Cake introduces a strikingly original voice, chronicling the struggles and unexpected beauty of modern urban life.

<![CDATA[When You Are Engulfed in Flames]]> 1044355 When You Are Engulfed in Flames confirms once again that David Sedaris is a master of mystery and suspense.

Or how about...

when set on fire, most of us either fumble for our wallets or waste valuable time feeling sorry for ourselves. David Sedaris has studied this phenomenon, and his resulting insights may very well save your life. Author of the national bestsellers Should You Be Attacked By Snakes and If You Are Surrounded by Mean Ghosts, David Sedaris, with When You Are Engulfed in Flames, is clearly at the top of his game.

Oh, all right...

David Sedaris has written yet another book of essays (his sixth). Subjects include a parasitic worm that once lived in his mother-in-law's leg, an encounter with a dingo, and the recreational use of an external catheter. Also recounted is the buying of a human skeleton and the author's attempt to quit smoking In Tokyo.

Master of nothing, at the dead center of his game, Sedaris proves that when you play with matches, you sometimes light the whole pack on fire.

A few of these stories are completely unforgettable, however the ones that stick around are worth the time. The one about a furniture maker and a desk is particulary good.

<![CDATA[The Darkest Evening of the Year]]> 379316
Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

No one is surprised when Amy risks her life to save Nickie, nor when she takes the female golden into her home. The bond between Amy and Nickie is immediate and uncanny. Even her two other goldens, Fred and Ethel, recognize Nickie as special, a natural alpha. But the instant joy Nickie brings is shadowed by a series of eerie incidents. An ominous stranger. A mysterious home invasion. And the unmistakable sense that someone is watching Amy's every move and that, whoever it is, he's not alone.

Someone has come back to turn Amy into the desperate, hunted creature she's always been there to save. But now there's no one to save Amy and those she loves. From its breathtaking opening scene to its shocking climax, The Darkest Evening of the Year is Dean Koontz at his finest, a transcendent thriller certain to have readers turning pages until dawn.]]>

Another book in Koontz "Golden Angels" series (my take, not official!) These books touch my heart and at times make me bawl like a baby...not so much from the writing (but that does play a part) but because I am a rescuer of animals and I saw a lot of myself in the character of Amy. Great story of intrigue but so much like "One Door Away from Heaven" I think Koontz should sue himself for plagiarism Sometimes this took me out of the story. Another criticism is that the villian "Billy Pilgrim" (yeah, I know) belongs in another book. This was clearly a tribute to Kurt Vonnegut and all the HiHo and "So it goes" kinda took me out of the moment. I am a huge Vonnegut fan and I didn't really think this tribute to him went with the flow of this particular narrative. THAT SAID, my take on it is that Vonnegut was a Humanist and this book is all about man being kind (or cruel) to man and all creatures and how we have choices to make(again, my take) and I can easily see how Vonnegut's view of things influence Koontz. All in all, a really solid read. Koontz is a beautiful writer who really doesn't get enough credit because of certain genres he is placed in. A very solid story with great characters. (spoiler ahead) I LOVE the nun phone call. Very nice touch.

99 Coffins (Laura Caxton, #2) 1441722 A dark secret buried beneath our bloodiest battlefield

Laura Caxton vowed never to face them again. The horror of what the vampires did is too close, the wounds too fresh. But when Jameson Arkeley, broken and barely recognizable, comes to her with an unfathomable, unholy discovery, her resolve crumbles.

Arkeley leads Caxton to a tomb in Gettysburg recently excavated by a local archaeology professor. While the town, with its legendary role in the Civil War’s worst battle, is no stranger to cemeteries, this one is remarkably, eerily different. In it lie 100 coffins99 of them occupied by vampires, who, luckily, are missing their hearts. But one of the coffins is empty and smashed to pieces.

Who is the missing vampire? Does he have access to the 99 hearts that, if placed back in the bodies of their owners, could reanimate an entire bloodthirsty army? How did the vampires end up there, undisturbed and undiscovered for 150 years? The answer lies in Civil War documents that contain sinister secrets about the newly found coffins—secrets that Laura Caxton is about to uncover as she is thrown into a deadly, gruesome mission of saving an entire town from a mass invasion of the undead…]]>

It was fun because I live in the Central PA area where this book takes place. If fact, I just had lunch at the Spring House Tavern in Gettysburg, the scene of a showdown near the end of 99 Coffins. Very cool. What a great use of history and legend. Horrible things happens in war. Horrible things happened in Gettysburg. Vampires just seem like a logical by-product.

I had a great time with this wonderful story. A story about love, redemption, terror, dogs and aliens. That is quite the package! A little boy (little alien to be precise) is running from a pack of assassins. His traveling companion is his dog "Old Yeller" who is neither old nor "yeller" Who they meet along the way is just half the adventure. Their tale intersects with that of handicapped wise acre Leilani Klonk who just may be killed by her step-father on her next birthday and Michelina Bellsong, a lost soul just out of prison. How do all these stories interweave? That was the fun part! I love the message at the end...even though some people may find it a bit schmaltzy.

review:
A great anthology of nice little vampire stories with a birthday theme. Some were very good and I want to seek out more stories, others, not so much. Rachel Caine's story was VERY good and I can't wait to read more of her work. I got some very good author leads from this mix of stories. Charlaine Harris' Sookie story kind of fell flat for me...

<![CDATA[Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1)]]> 47212 HARRY DRESDEN WIZARD

Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things—and most don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a—well, whatever. There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks.

So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get interesting.

Magic - it can get a guy killed.]]>

review:
My introduction to the Dredsden story was in "Many Bloody Returns" a book of vampire shorts. I thought it was snappy, witty and very well written. So I borrowed this, the first book in the series, from the library. It was "okay"...but I found myself wishing it would move itself along. I think the pacing was a bit off, but I'll give the other books a try.
