Mmm, it tastes delicious!

Of course you’re better looking than Jon Hamm.

Until one night, thanks to a pub hypnotist, Natalie’s most private thoughts begin to bubble up and pop out of her mouth. Things get very messy indeed. Especially when some sticky home truths offend her fiancé.

Natalie must track down the hypnotist before the wedding is officially cancelled. So along with bad influence bestie Meg, Natalie finds herself in the Yorkshire Parish of Little Trooley - a small village bursting with big secrets, nosy old folk and intriguing Wellington-wearing men.

When the girls get stranded in the village with no means of escape and no way to break the hypnotist's spell, Natalie is forced to face the truths she has been avoiding her whole life...]]>

<![CDATA[Rhythm of War (The Stormlight Archive, #4)]]> 49021976 The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Oathbringer, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar's crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move.

Now, as new technological discoveries by Navani Kholin's scholars begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength.

At the same time that Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with his changing role within the Knights Radiant, his Windrunners face their own problem: As more and more deadly enemy Fused awaken to wage war, no more honorspren are willing to bond with humans to increase the number of Radiants. Adolin and Shallan must lead the coalition’s envoy to the honorspren stronghold of Lasting Integrity and either convince the spren to join the cause against the evil god Odium, or personally face the storm of failure.]]>

<![CDATA[Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive, #3)]]> 34002132 Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.]]>

One of the few white kids in a rural Kentucky town, Logan Whyte always kept to his own kind out of self-preservation. He never considered himself racist, but that didn’t stop him from falling in with the wrong crowd—who celebrated hate as much as he fought it—or from ending up in prison for eight years on an armed robbery charge.
A successful, educated black woman, Katie Andreassen was tired of being accused of betraying her own race. Her lonely isolation, coupled with her grief over losing her mother, inspire her to create a new pen pal program at Capshaw State Penitentiary, where her father is a warden.
The program brings the unlikely pair together, but Logan and Katie soon find themselves forced to overcome past fears and prejudices. Their friendship doesn’t come easily threatened by a crooked lawyer with a grudge and a best friend who betrays her promise to help.
When faced with a world that forces them apart, Logan and Katie must show everyone else what they have discovered: that love is, in fact, colorblind.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

I feel like this was written by someone other than Sarah J Maas. Seriously, it didn't feel remotely the same in terms of tone or style. The descriptions were clunky and overblown. The dialogue was so melodramatic that it lost any emotional impact. The yearning, the thrashing, the raging blah blah... it was bad. There were certain descriptive phrases that got too repetitive - her knees barked, he barked, pain barked ... everything barks... This would have benefitted from some really good editing.

The relationships between the characters were poorly presented - the instalove in this ... ugh... I think, the Throne of Glass series spoiled me with some decent writing, and then I got excited when I saw this and now... sigh. I'm invested only because I bought this along with the second in the series based on the fact that I enjoyed the Throne of Glass series so much. Can you tell that I think the Throne of Glass series is better?

This was a badly written, cliché ridden, soft-porn fantasy book with very one-dimensional characters. There's no one to like in this book or the second one in the series. I'm really disappointed.

The Throne of Glass series is very much superior to this even though I'd say it's aimed at a slightly younger audience.

What a shame.

I will say though, that because this one ended in a semi-cliffhangery way with some developments which were vaguely intriguing, I'll probably end up reading the next one when it comes out. Sigh. ]]>

<![CDATA[Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, #1)]]> 5899779 “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.

So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses,]]>

Casey Scott plans to find out why.

After interning for free all summer at the top television station in the Twin Cities, Casey lands an on-air gig. Trouble is, the new role is Sports Girl—which means reporting from local bars and tailgating parties to create excitement for the hometown heroes. All while wearing tiny team jerseys that are so tight they leave little to the imagination.

But she has a plan. Uncover the biggest sports mystery of the decade, and she’ll be on her way. Question is, how far will she go to get the story?

*Caution: This story contains explicit sex scenes with an alpha hockey player who gives an entirely new meaning to the term Body Checking. *]]>
202 Clare James Vee 1 interesting premise ... enough to hold one's attention, and then it got ridiculously sexual really quickly - (yes, I appreciate this is a romance/erotica type of story, but still... some realism in terms of how the characters interact would be nice). Not just instant highly physical stuff - kind of hits you in the face in a not very tasteful way.

Anyway, I read it because I wanted to know what would happen in the actual plot. This is not the worst thing I've ever read, but still, the POW in yer face sexual activity was just nonsense, and for that reason I couldn't give this many stars. I make no apology for that.

It's a shame, because I read the Impossible Love series by the same author and I liked those much more. ]]>

The sex scenes (I can't call those love scenes no matter what the author was trying to convince us of) were comedy gold though. In a very ironic, stupid way, e.g, 'I drove my lips heartily into his.' Say what now?

Part of writing decent dialogue is having the characters say things that are believable, and natural. Unless you're writing in the fantasy, sci-fi or historical genres, the speech between characters needs to be realistic. This was one of the major failings in this novel.

"Bri, you've been telling me all along that I need to make a choice. That's what I'm doing tonight. I'm following my heart. It's telling me I want this with him. I can't handle trying to contain everything that happens inside of me whenever he's around any longer. I'm going to explode soon, and it's not going to be pretty if I do."

Who talks like this? I mean let's say you're a girl in love, and you're chatting with one of your girlfriends about the man you're in love with, would you actually put it this way? As in normal, everyday speech?

'"The pizza here is astounding and the beer is cheap."

"The pizza here is extraordinary, so I'm fine with doing a group order if that works with everyone else," Ethan spoke up.'

Who says this about pizza?

As I got through this book, the thought occurred to me that the author was trying to sound 'literary' in her writing and got over-zealous with the use of the thesaurus. As a result, the writing was overblown and full of hyper-bole that just wasn't necessary. And I can't be bothered to put in the quotes for this.

The characters simply weren't developed in any way. The 'relationship' between the two leads sprang out of nowhere - I believe it's called 'instalove'.

Don't get me started on the plot. ]]>

Noah and Tabby’s love story wasn’t typical or particularly romantic. After all, he picked her up at a bar or maybe she picked him up. Either way, he saw her naked before he even knew her name.

Tabby came to him broken, but determined. And Noah knew how to fix her. It was a meeting of the bodies. A retraining of the mind. A connection that soon infected the heart.

But after two years, Noah’s old tricks aren’t working, and Tabby is shutting down again. This time, he refuses to play games. He wants all of her, or nothing at all.

Not Without You returns to the eclectic neighborhood where Noah and Tabby met, and where they are now discovering that life doesn’t get easier after you leave campus. What began as a sweet story of love and redemption, turns into something dark, intense and, at times, disturbing. And if they’re not careful, it will destroy them both.

Improper English 50753
Brandishing a loaf of French bread at a dishy detective wasn't how Alexandra Freemar had envisioned starting her stay in London. But the sassy American wasn't about to put up with any flak from the uptight--albeit gorgeous--Scotland Yard inspector who accused her of breaking and entering. She didn't have time to deal with this suspicious upstairs neighbor. She had two months to write the perfect romance novel--two months to prove that she could succeed as an author.

Luckily, reserved Englishmen were not her cup of tea. Yet, one kiss told her Alexander Black might not be quite as proper as she'd thought. In fact, his lips could be classified as downright wicked, leaving Alix to wonder how far his talents extended. There was only one snag: The serious-minded gentleman wasn't interested in a mere summer fling. And while as a writer Alix knew every imaginable euphemism for the male member, as a woman she soon realized she had a lot to learn about love.rthijrg]ih]]>

This was offensive. I am no means a prude, but this book glorifies rape, emotional manipulation, and Stockholm syndrome among other things in a really gratuitous way. I didn't understand the purpose of telling this story or what the author was trying to say about these themes, but it seemed she got some titillating thrill from it and wanted to share that with her readers. The author then has the nerve to put a disclaimer in the book saying she doesn't condone this stuff... but that's not the impression she gave in her writing.

<![CDATA[ClownFellas: Tales of the Binzo Family]]> 24703110 “Carlton Mellick III goes past silly, through weird, detours around dumb, blasts through bizarre, and gets to a place where the normal physics of narrative no longer apply. You will never be the same.—Cory Doctorow, author ofLittle BrotherandHomelandIn a topsy-turvy world where clowns are killers and crooks, Little Bigtop is a three-ring circus of crime, and no syndicate is more dangerous than the Binzo family. From the wildly original mind of Carlton Mellick III comes the short-story collection ClownFellas—an epic mob saga where life is cheap and the gags will slay you.For years, the hard-boiled capos of the Binzo family have run all of the funny business in Little Bigtop, from the clown brothels to the illegal comedy trade. But hard times have befallen the Binzos now that Le Mystère, the French clown Mafia, has started moving in and trying to take over the city. If that weren’t enough, they’ve got to deal with the cops, the Feds, the snitches, the carnies, the mysterious hit man Mr. Pogo, and the mutant clowns over in the Sideshow district. With the odds stacked against them, the Binzos must fight to survive . . . or die laughing.Praise for ClownFellas“Mario Puzo meets Barnum & Bailey . . . You just can’t look away as the ridiculousness escalates.—Publishers Weekly“The most original novelist working today? The most outrageous? The most unpredictable? These aren’t easy superlatives to make; however, Carlton Mellick may well be all of those things, behind a canon of books that all irreverently depart from the form and concepts of traditional novels, and adventure the reader into a howling, dark fantasyland of the most bizarre, over-the-top, and mind-warping inventiveness. In my opinion, ClownFellas is his best work to date.—Edward Lee, author of City Infernal and Header“I rarely enjoy clowns—which is ironic since I’ve been one for over four decades—but ClownFellas is great on so many levels, irony being one of them. What can I say besides I love it! Great read, and funny as hell . . . I have been accused of being unfunny before, and after the trial I had to enter the Witless Protection Program. This is funny! —Barry Lubin, aka Grandma, longtime Big Apple Circus clown “If Martin Scorsese and Ronald McDonald had a baby, this would be it. . . . Each story is clever, multi-layered, and filled with witty dialogue. . . . A must-read.—This Is Horror “Mellick’s writing is wonderfully descriptive and wildly imaginative. . . . I was utterly delighted, amused, and engrossed. . . . ClownFellas is a gem!—The Qwillery “A rollercoaster ride through a strange world that borders on our own reality . . . a story that is just as difficult to define as it is to put down.̧油Ա.dz “Mellick has created another amazing read. . . . Confession #1: I'm a sex columnist. Hold on, that's not really the confession. You see, I'm sort of a virgin...sex columnist.

Confession #2: I'm kind of in love with Bridget's older brother, Oliver. No, I was. No, I am. Wait, was? Am? Crap.

Confession #3: I've been avoiding Oliver for four years. Or I was until today, because he just moved in. Yes, you read that correctly. He's my new roommate. So that night we've both been pretending never happened, well, we might not be able to keep it a secret any longer.

Unfortunately, it’s the only foolproof way to secure his position as head of Mortimer Innovations. At least he’ll be able to dump his “spouse at the end of the year. He has no intention of getting hitched for life.

Bella doesn’t expect her adversary to be handsome or funny, or compassionate but Evan’s all three, and he’s proving a tough competitor, too. When they end up sharing a tent and a sleeping-bag her body betrays her with a longing so deep it cuts her to the core. Still, this cowgirl must stay strong. If Evan uncovers her secret fears, he’ll use them to win the contest and then he’ll own her for a year. She’ll be out of luck, out of cash, and stuck being Mrs. Mortimer until he kicks her to the curb. Too bad she can’t decide which is worse winning the show and losing Evan forever, or losing the show and only being his temporary wife.

Evan can’t believe he’s falling for the one woman who doesn’t want him. This cowgirl’s not impressed by his money, his name, or his inability to sleep in a tent with her for an entire night, but every look and touch she gives him sends his desire through the roof. With a director determined to use his claustrophobia to make him look like a fool, and an adversary so sexy he can hardly see straight, he’ll need all his savvy to come out on top. Too bad he’s going to lose no matter how this show turns out. If he beats Bella, he’ll destroy the first woman he’s ever loved. If he doesn’t beat her, it’s bye-bye Mortimer Innovations.

Will either of them remember in time that it’s not who wins or who loses it’s how they play the game that really counts?

The author shows the potential to write really beautiful, poetic prose when describing what’s happening, but it was spoiled a little with repetition. I tend to notice when certain phrases get used a lot in a novel- and in some rare cases that can be really effective depending on what the author is doing. In Queen of Shadows (and sadly in the previous books in the series), this sometimes get a little bit annoying.

I noticed in particular that when describing someone crying, or who is close to tears, that ‘silver [always] lines their eyes. Now that is quite a pretty, poetic way of describing it but it gets a bit old when it’s used in almost every instance (there’s a lot of crying in this book).

The other one is the constant ‘huffing someone ‘huffs out a laugh or a sigh or a growl multiple times. The same with ‘snarling particularly Rowan.

Aside from those little niggly criticisms I still really enjoyed Queen of Shadows (and the previous books) and I’m looking forward to when the next instalment comes out.

I really enjoyed this instalment in the Throne of Glass series. I’ve come this far, so I’m fully invested in the characters and the overarching storyline. I will say that while the author is great at things like: fleshing out convincing characters, building a living, breathing world with smells and colours, plot tension and so on, there are a few things here and there that could have been done a lot better, or with more finesse perhaps.

Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping—based on their correspondence—to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

A rare epic fantasy that doesn't recycle the classics and that is a complete and satisfying story in one volume, Elantris is fleet and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about. It's also the wonderful debut of a welcome new star in the constellation of fantasy.]]>

<![CDATA[Blonde Date (The Ivy Years, #2.5)]]> 22444651 A blind date. A nervous sorority girl. A mean-spirited fraternity prank. What could possibly go wrong?

As a sorority pledge, there are commandments that Katie Vickery must live by. One: thou shalt not show up for the party without a date. Two: the guy shall be an athlete, preferably an upperclassman.

Unfortunately, Katie just broke up with her jerkface football player boyfriend. Even worse, her last encounter with him resulted in utter humiliation. She’d rather hide under the bed than attend a party where he'll be.

Yet staying home would mean letting him win.

Enjoying herself tonight was out of the question. She could only hope to get through the evening without her blind date noticing that he was spending the evening with a crazy person.

Andrew Baschnagel is living proof that nice guys don’t finish first. He’s had his eye on Katie since the moment her long legs waltzed into his art history class. So when her roommate sets Andy up to be Katie’s date, he’d be crazy to say no. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a lot of practice with either girls or parties. Yet.

BLONDE DATE is a 23,000 word novella covering a four hour span of Katie & Andy's night. ALSO INCLUDED: a sneak preview of the third novel in the Ivy Years series, THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR.]]>
