Zodiac (Zodiac, #1) 21850355 At the dawn of time, there werethirteen Houses in the Zodiac galaxy. Now, only twelve remain. . . .

In the Zodiac galaxy, your astrological sign determines everything about you. The stars tell the story of your life, and nothing—and nobody—is real unless you can actually touch them.

It’s a galaxy divided, where personalities clash and suspicions run high. Everyone is a potential enemy, so it’s best to stick to your kind. Hard-working realists in House Virgo scoff at sweet-talking Librans, who use stellar social skills to climb to the top. And while the brooding twins of House Gemini take forever to make a decision, optimistic Sagittarians hop from adventure to adventure without a thought.

House Cancer prizes loyalty and honesty above all else. When an unforeseen catastrophe strikes their ocean planet, the stars select sixteen-year-old Rho as their new Guardian. Rho suspects an ancient, power-hungry evil of legend has returned to exact revenge across the entire Zodiac. But Rho is an unknown novice and one of the youngest Guardians ever. Who should believe her?

And with the stars anywhere but in her favor, how can Rho defeat an enemy she can’t touch?

This first book of an epic sci-fi-meets-high-fantasy series takes place in a galaxy inspired by the twelve astrological signs—rendered with stunning complexity that both transports readers to a fascinating new world and holds up a mirror to reflect how we can better know each other in our own. ]]>

I'm hoping to get more attached to certain characters through the development as well, because at times I wasn't always moved by certain deaths, and that's never a good thing. And the events at the end were slightly underwhelming, but there's an excuse for it (to an extent).]]>

In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed, and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father the emperor doesn't guess.

And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime. Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule -- and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough...]]>

In the hidden desert city of Qalia, there is secret spice magic that awakens the affinities of those who drink the misra tea. Sixteen-year-old Imani has the affinity for iron and is able to wield a dagger like no other warrior. She has garnered the reputation as being the next great Shield for battling djinn, ghouls, and other monsters spreading across the sands.

Her reputation has been overshadowed, however, by her brother, who tarnished the family name after it was revealed that he was stealing his nation's coveted spice--a telltale sign of magical obsession. Soon after that, he disappeared, believed to have died beyond the Forbidden Wastes. Despite her brother's betrayal, there isn't a day that goes by when Imani doesn't grieve him.

But when Imani discovers signs that her brother may be alive and spreading the nation's magic to outsiders, she makes a deal with the Council that she will find him and bring him back to Qalia, where he will face punishment. Accompanied by other Shields, including Taha, a powerful beastseer who can control the minds of falcons, she sets out on her mission.

Imani will soon find that many secrets lie beyond the Forbidden Wastes--and in her own heart--but will she find her brother?]]>

Buyable/Re-readable?: Ohhhh yeah, I will be seeing this series through. Another Top Ten of 2022.

Firstly. this book has a fun AF magic concept. Tea ceremonies and spices? Let's go!
"The tea must be taken in silence, allowing the drinker to dwell on the Great Spirit’s gift and prepare to receive the magic."
Both taste and smell vary, as well, from ceremony to ceremony, which is a fine detail. And this magic system also has consequences, which I appreciate.

It has this magical (pun intended? Probably) flow to it; Ibrahim's style and passion are just...you want to consume it like the characters do their tea. And it's forever nice getting glimpses into other cultures, even if they're Arabian fantasy world types. Spice Road is told in first person POV à la our main lady, Imani. I was able to accept the romance and attraction between her and another character when remembering that we the reader are coming into their relationship two years later, and thus, things have occurred off-page that we're not privy to. So, while it almost feels out of no where, it's two years in the making. However, there is another interest that, had I not loved the eff out of this book, would have been more problematic to swallow. The assumptions I applied are; maybe this person is akin to, say, a vampire, in that it's very difficulty to resist them. I am also wondering if it'll come out in another book that Imani has a past connection to said other interest, in which case, it would make a lot of sense why they're drawn to one another. And if those aren't the case? Then I will take issue with the execution of their interactions, because this one does come out of nowhere and has no build up or the like. It's not enough to ruin this gem of a book, but it will be enough to knock off a star. We shall see. I cannot wait!

Contains: sorcerers, Shields, djinns, ghouls, sand serpents, skin- changer (ex: turns into lion), beastseer (ex: controls birds), werehyenas, giants, geomancy. Plus, adventure, non-story-dominating romance, family dynamics.
Has the name Bayek, which is an "Assassin's Creed" character and nifty reference.
"In the dirt by my slipper crawls a black scarab, the first reaches of morning sun shimmering on its curved back. Startled, it emits a high-pitched squeak and flails its rayed legs."
-- I totally YouTubed a beetle squeak..
 Line highlight (there.are.SO.many!!1!) :
"I hopelessly search for a glimmer in her eyes. They are the painted glass lamps one would find in a bazaar back home. Beautiful but hollow without the light."

<![CDATA[The Last Hero (The First Sister Trilogy, #3)]]> 58509068 The flame of rebellion burns across the solar system in this dazzling conclusion to Linden A. Lewis’s stunning First Sister trilogy perfect for fans of Red Rising, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Expanse.

Astrid is finally free of the Sisterhood, yet her name carries on. She’s called the Unchained by those she’s inspired and the Heretic by those who want her voiceless once more. Now Astrid uses knowledge of the Sisterhood’s inner workings against them, aiding the moonborn in raids against abbeys and Cathedrals, all the while exploring the mysteries of her forgotten past.

However, the Sisterhood thrives under the newly appointed Mother Lilian I, who’s engaged in high-stakes politics among the Warlords and the Aunts to rebuild the Sisterhood in her own image. But the evil of the Sisterhood can’t be purged with anything less than fire....

Meanwhile, Hiro val Akira is a rebel without an army, a Dagger without a Rapier. As protests rock the streets of Cytherea, Hiro moves in the shadows, driven by grief and vengeance, as they hunt the man responsible for all their pain: their father....

Transformed by the Genekey virus, Luce navigates the growing schism within the Asters on Ceres. Hurting in her new body, she works to bridge two worlds seemingly intent on mutual destruction. All while mourning her fallen brother, though Lito sol Lucius’s memory may yet live on.

Yet Souji val Akira stands in judgment on them all, plotting the future for all of humanity, and running out of time before war erupts between the Icarii and Geans. But can even the greatest human intellect outwit the Synthetics?

The emotional First Sister trilogy comes to a sensational climax in this final installment, and is a must-read for science fiction fans everywhere.]]>

<![CDATA[The Weeping Tide (Wilderlore #2)]]> 58437754 Barclay and his friends must save an island city from the Legendary Beast of the Sea in this second book in the Wilderlore series.

Something is wrong at the Sea. The weeping tide, a carnivorous algae bloom, is eating up all the fish. Beasts are terrorizing the nearby Elsewheres. And Lochmordra, the Legendary Beast, is rising at random and swallowing ships whole.

Barclay’s teacher, the famous Guardian Keeper Runa Rasgar, has been summoned to investigate, and as her apprentice, Barclay gets to join too. But Runa’s nemesis has also been called to the Sea, and he’s brought apprentices of his own. When the not-so friendly competition between them grows fierce, it’s Barclay—the only one from the Elsewheres—who can’t seem to keep up.

The key to stopping Lochmordra lies in his mythical home, but as the flood of the weeping tide encroaches, time is running out to find it. If the rival groups can’t cast aside old grudges and learn to work together, soon the Sea will be destroyed completely. And all the while Barclay must ask himself: is there truly a place for him in the Wilderlands?]]>

I think I said this with the first book, but (to me) it's basically Pokémon meets Harry Potter and I adore the heckin' heck out of this series. In the time before we knew JK was an a-hole, the similarities to Harry Potter may have irked me, but now I just revel in them.

The book has charm and wit, inclusivity and extremely important message of self worth, etc. It has a decent pace and the right amount of action, though the ending was a little strange. Not enough to lose a star or turn me off the series, but enough to slightly confuse me with the abruptness of it all. The writing level isn't too simple, nor overly difficult, making the middle-grade label accurate.

Still recommend both books, still plan on buying the box set.

P.S. If there isn't a Toadles Funko POP! or plushie at some point, I'll riot.]]>

But can I give this more than five stars?

WOW. This is by far one of my favourite books read this year. It makes Top Three, and that's knowing the year still has five more months left in it. *Strong* female lead. Total badass, HBIC, and someone who isn't quite the hero, nor the villain. I adore (yes, adore) what the author did with the second and third main characters, and the relationships/chemistry said three have.

The theme and messages coursing havoc through the novel are legit and worth supporting. The description of "This is Pacific Rim meets Handmaid's Tale" plus historical fiction is pretty dang accurate; the concept and the world are just cool as hell, and the way in which Zhao choreographs language is utterly stunning. I highlighted so many passages, because they just left me drunk. And I didn't even realize who the author was until I went on a pronouns search, at which point, I literally yelled at my husband "OH. MY. GODS. Do know who wrote that book I just read??" We saw their YouTube videos and instantly took a liking, so knowing they're behind this g-dang gem only propels my exultation of it. I further trust the material, given the depth and detail put into their previous work.

You can guarantee that I'll be buying this series and screaming its praises. As if that gorgeous cover art by Ashley Mackenzie isn't reason alone.]]>

<![CDATA[Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares (Paola Santiago #2)]]> 56209478 Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the sequel to Tehlor Kay Mejia's critically acclaimed own-voices novel about science-obsessed Paola Santiago.
"Paola is a brilliant, furious girl who often trusts her brain but trips over her heart."--Sarah Gailey, Hugo and Locus award-winning author of River of Teeth

Six months after Paola Santiago confronted the legendary La Llorona, life is nothing like she'd expected it to be. She is barely speaking to her best friends, Dante and Emma, and what's worse, her mom has a totally annoying boyfriend. Even with her chupacabra puppy, Bruto, around, Pao can't escape the feeling that she's all alone in the world.

Pao has no one to tell that she's having nightmares again, this time set in a terrifying forest. Even more troubling? At their center is her estranged father, an enigma of a man she barely remembers. And when Dante's abuela falls mysteriously ill, it seems that the dad Pao never knew just might be the key to healing the eccentric old woman.

Pao's search for her father will send her far from home, where she will encounter new monsters and ghosts, a devastating betrayal, and finally, the forest of her nightmares. Will the truths her father has been hiding save the people Pao loves, or destroy them?

Once again Tehlor Kay Mejia draws on her Mexican heritage to tell a wild and wondrous story that combines creatures from folklore with modern-day challenges.

I'm in love with this series and this author. Mejia's two Santiago books have been so very fulfilling; they're extremely intelligent and well-written. They absolute do not hold back with social issues (first book had me legit crying multiple times by showing how PoC are treated). They're inclusive. They're creative AF. And as always, I love the exposure to another culture. I also appreciated how the author approached non-Spanish speaking readers by having the main badass Pao also not speak much of the language, and thus was as in the dark as said readers.

I do, however, have one complaint with the second installment, and that was how rushed the ending felt. Like someone altered the deadline or restricted the number of pages. It didn't necessarily ruin the experience, but it also left me a little .__. That said, I still recommend this series and I will excitedly read it to its completion (and buy the box set).

This was a surprising (as in "oh-my-stars-and-garters" and "oh-what's-this?") bit of fun, and if I hadn't perused through my custom feeds on Reddit, it's very likely I wouldn't have seen/heard/read this at all. So, thank you random Redditor for asking for horror book recommendations, and then further thanks to u/The_White_Ecuadorian plugging his own work. The artwork is chipper and the characters likeable (I get a real Gus Johnson & Eddy Burback vibe, which is delightful because they're so g-dang wonderful).

Not entirely certain on how I feel about this installment, yet. The different perspectives was fun and interesting, and I took a liking to some of the new characters. Just...haven't settled on all the feelings at this point in time.

Red Rising (Red Rising, #1) 20766595 Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it.
The Reds are humanity's last hope.

Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it's all a lie.

That Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought. Until the day that Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside.

But the command school is a battlefield - and Darrow isn't the only student with an agenda.

Break the chains.

Live for more.

<![CDATA[The Hammer of Thor (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #2)]]> 27904311 "Magnus Chase, you nearly started Ragnarok. What are you going to do next?"

It's been six weeks since Magnus and his friends returned from defeating Fenris Wolf and the fire giants. Magnus has adjusted to life at the Hotel Valhalla—as much as a once-homeless and previously alive kid can. As a son of Frey, the god of summer, fertility, and health, Magnus doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of Odin's chosen warriors, but he has a few good peeps among his hallmates on floor nineteen, and he's been dutifully training for Ragnarok along with everyone else. His days have settled into a new kind of normal.

But Magnus should have known there's no such thing as normal in the Nine Worlds. His friends Hearthstone and Blitzen have disappeared. A new hallmate is creating chaos. According to a very nervous goat, a certain object belonging to Thor is still missing, and the thunder god's enemies will stop at nothing to gain control of it.

Time to summon Jack, the Sword of Summer, and take action. Too bad the only action Jack seems to be interested in is dates with other magical weapons. . . .]]>

First read-through: How about that squee-worthy last line?
(Ă>Ӭ<V

MCatGoA: tHoT had an easy flow, was a thoroughly smart and enjoyable read, contained a fantastic new character, and possessed a respectful approach to relatable and relevant issues (i.e. transgender, Islam, Atheism, etc).

EDIT: I also appreciate the separation between these Gods and the ones established in Disney/Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Since, you know, Disney owns Hyperion Books as well. Pop culture and Meta stuff, woo!

Side-note of import: I think Riordan handles the cross-overs extremely well, making them organic and downright fun. This is a world I have always wanted - where all the Gods are real, no matter their origin. I do wish, however, that we saw more of the Kanes/Egyptian Gods, in terms of acknowledging the deity novels are within the same universe. Because all things Egyptian for the win, thank you very much.

Second read-through: GDI, though, Jack is annoying as all get out. However, I am well aware that as a person over 30, said character element is meant more for the target age group and is probably less cringey/eye-rolly/sigh-inducing to others. ]]>

review:
A nice conclusion to the delightful, rich, and thrilling work that makes up this trilogy. The characters are darling, the action is engaging, the take on magic is fresh. I was actually moved to tears in the final SoM installment. While I wouldn't be against revisiting this world through shorts or what have you, I am also content enough with the manner in which we leave Londons. I very much look forward to reading Schwab's other pieces, because she's a gd poet with the English language.

<![CDATA[At the Bottom of the World (Jack and the Geniuses, #1)]]> 31305496 New York Times bestselling authors Bill Nye the Science Guy and Gregory Mone take middle-grade readers on a scientific adventure in the launch of an exciting new chapter book series, Jack and the Geniuses. The perfect combination to engage and entertain readers, the series features real-world science along with action and a mystery that will leave kids guessing until the end, making these books ideal for STEM education.

In the series opener, Jack and the Geniuses: At The Bottom of The World, readers meet Jack and his foster siblings, Ava and Matt, who are orphans. But they’re not your typical kind of orphans—they’re geniuses. Well, Ava and Matt are, which sometimes makes life difficult for twelve-year-old Jack. Ava speaks multiple languages and builds robots for fun, and Matt is into astronomy and a whiz at math. As for Jack, it’s hard to stand out when he’s surrounded by geniuses all the time.

When the kids try to spy on Dr. Hank Witherspoon, one of the world’s leading scientists, they end up working for him in his incredible laboratory. Soon, Hank and the kids travel to Antarctica for a prestigious science competition, but they find that all is not as it seems: A fellow scientist has gone missing, and so has any trace of her research. Could someone be trying to use her findings to win the contest? It’s up to Jack, Ava, and Matt to find the missing scientist and discover who’s behind it all—before it’s too late.

Integrating real science facts with humor and suspense, and featuring an ensemble cast of loveable boy and girl characters, this uniquely engaging series is an irresistible chemical reaction for middle-grade readers. With easy-to-read language presented in a fun, motivating, and accessible way, this series opener is a great book for both inquisitive kids and reluctant readers. The book also includes information about the science discussed and used to solve the mystery, as well as a cool science project about density that kids can do at home or in the classroom.

Bill Nye's brand new talk show series for Netflix, "Bill Nye Saves the World" is set to launch in Spring 2017.]]>
