“Truthfully, d’Angelo found himself unsurprised that the engines had finally packed up. Weaver like his predecessors had been a kind of starship ‘backyard mechanic and at the time of the explosion, the stardrive was all but held together by bits of wire and duct tape. Weavers mistake cost him the stardrive and Fuller and Jang their lives. “Blown up seemed a little inadequate to describe what really happened, but the engines were now spread over the last light-year or so behind him. Now that really made his calendar cycle.

Life hardly ever turns out the way we expect it to, and for Mykl d’Angelo it had just taken a bad turn for terrible. Stranded in deep space, he is handed a chance to redeem the other shipwrecks in his life his lost career in the Imperial Starfleet and a lost chance at a relationship with the girl of his dreams.

In order to pull this off, he must confront hordes of Corsairs, a crotchety starship captain, his former girlfriend and a particularly dangerous character called Blachart who will lead him behind enemy lines, where he will learn the meaning of trust but very likely, never return.

<![CDATA[Magus Thor’rauna High Priest of Satan in South Africa: Phil Botha receives Christ as Lord!]]> 25401209 158 Francis B. Christina 1
Phil Botha’s story - ostensibly a serious biography, is laced with major inconsistencies, errors and flaws in its claims about Satanism which reveal that neither he (nor the biographer) knew enough about Satanism to ever qualify as a “High Priest in Satanism, or even to masquerade as a novice.

It is claimed that Botha used to “teleport all over the planet (while he was a Satanist of course, so presumably they took away his teleportation permit when he got “saved). Despite the existence of contemporary photographic, video or filming equipment, there are NO recordings of such events. Not even so much as two photos of Phil Botha standing beside two landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower or the Great Wall of China minutes apart while holding an alarm clock or calendar or even at the same moment, seeing as he also claimed he had the ability to time travel!

This sounds like a fairly amusing piece of 1970’s fantasy, and probably one fueled by LSD. But that's all it is. Fantasy. To present it as incontrovertible fact - as the agent and promoter of this work has done - is just patently ridiculous.

As a work critical of Satanism as a religion and of the occult however - which it purports to be, it is seriously flawed and amounts to nothing less than poorly researched, vile slander against occult religions and Satanism as a New Religious Movement.

According to Botha, Witches, Satanists, Freemasons and professional magicians are buried alive as part of their initiation ceremony? Really? Why then, have none of them received that memo?

Anton LaVey was not known for his levitation or astral projecting skills - LaVey was an Atheistic Satanist and founder of the Church of Satan, who presided over numerous rituals and ceremonies in his capacity as High Priest of the Church of Satan. LaVeyan Satanists are atheistic and do not have a belief in deities or magic other than as a ritual means to focus on goal-fulfillment. Botha suggests that in order for someone to qualify as a High Priest of Satan, they should prove that they can levitate or astral project?! Seriously?!

Botha - and his biographer - create the impression that all Satanists everywhere fall under one central hierarchy, and all believing in the same brand of Satanism, when in truth there is no such thing. As it turns out, there are many different types and groups of Satanism around the world and as a matter of fact they are wholly independent of each other, and some even view each other in an adversarial light.

“Francis B, the person managing Botha’s legacy of tall tales claims to have written to Peter H. Gilmore, the present head of the Church of Satan in the USA, asking questions as Phil Botha, also using “Magus in his email address which apparently (according to Botha) all Satanists would fear and acknowledge but Gilmore didn’t, so he concludes that “Gilmore is fake.

Setting up your victims by claiming in advance that those who don’t recognize your fancy made-up titles are “fakers, is the hallmark of a scam artist.

Instead of questioning the 158 page-long conspiracy theory they have promoted as fact, the "Francis B." described their correspondence with the Church of Satan as “proof that the Church of Satan is run by novices & con-artists in a page-long rant on their website dedicated to Phil Botha. It doesn’t seem to occur to them at all that Botha might have made all this stuff up.

This nonsense isn't even entertaining enough to read as a badly conceived and poorly-presented joke. Furthermore, in terms of quality, it's surprising to me that this item is even for sale on Amazon because the author never even bothered to design an actual cover. As a document, it evokes something printed at home and stapled together to sell at the local cult tabernacle on the corner. Rather than being presented as a serious piece of any literary value, I think this item's only salvation is if it were repackaged as Christian fiction, in which case it might carry at least a little merit or entertainment value for those who find that sort of thing interesting.

The author - in their belief that this fantasy has any basis in fact - as well as demonstrated in the string of emails between them and me back in 2013 - needs to educate themself about Satanism as a NRM (New Religious Movement):

"Satanism: The Acid Test" addresses disinformation being distributed against new religious movements (NRMs) such as neo-Pagan religions and Satanism, and sub-cultures like the Vampire sub-culture, offering clarification and educational information to demystify these groups.

I gave this effort a one star rating on Good Reads, but only because I couldn't leave a no-star review.

As far as the old Tinamometer is concerned, it rates a solid, resounding zero.]]>

Life hardly ever turns out the way we expect it to, and for Mykl d’Angelo, skipper and owner of the loderunner Pegasus, it had just taken a bad turn for terrible.

Due a minor misunderstanding, his crew had stolen the ship’s only shuttle, leaving him and two others behind to crew the ailing ship on their own. As if that weren’t bad enough, just a few hours later the rickety old ship’s stardrive exploded in the middle of the middle of nowhere, killing Mykl’s two remaining crewmen.

Marooned alone in deep space, Mykl d’Angelo counted his blessings, offered prayers to any gods who specialized in miracles, and prepared to await (A) seemingly unlikely rescue, or (B) a lingering death

Rescue takes place, but at a price as the Antares, a cruiser dispatched to investigate the mysterious silence of a remote starbase, crosses paths with a legendary and fearsome Corsair a man whose name sent shivers down the spines of lesser mortals.

Wendy who prefers to be called ‘Kay - began experimenting with poetry at 15, beginning with her first effort “Darkness Falls, quickly followed by her second, “Tombstone, which resulted in some pretty worried looks from her mother. Since that time, Kay went on to write over 100 more poems (which her parents have never read).

Kay was born in Springs (the town, not actually wearing them) and later grew somewhat taller in a tiny flyspeck on the map called “Kriel...]]>

When Day Is Done 50060775
Yvonne Lorraine (van der Westhuizen) Engela was born in the Eastern Cape in South Africa in 1934. Between 1953 and 1972, she eagerly wrote poetry in both her home language Afrikaans, and in English. She never thought her poetry would ever be good enough to publish. Life was far too hectic. She had to work hard and continuously to support a husband, and later a child. being a single mother was never easy, and she was a humble person. Later on, she put it all away and didn’t talk about it anymore. Her child brought her the joy and happiness that nobody else could. Life went on

Then one day, at 79 years of age, she died suddenly. Not long after her death, her daughter began to clean up and process her belongings and found a stash of old notebooks full of poetry written in her youth. And she read them and realized what a treasure trove her mother had left her. A look inside her mother’s soul, as a young woman, and as a talented writer and poet

Yvonne had underestimated herself. How many writers or poets in the world had ever written equally as well in two languages? In English and Afrikaans? There can’t be many.]]>

Shakandazu Valley 50060664
The man had simply turned up one day three years before, bought the old bungalow at the end of Buku Road paid for it in cash, and then kept to himself. The only times he seemed to venture into town was to buy copious amounts of alcohol from the liquor store every few weeks. Sometimes he briefly showed his face at happenings hosted by curious locals. He never spoke about his past.

Who was he? Where did he come from? How did he come to have so much money readily on hand? Why did he never want to talk about his past not even to the Doctor, or Mr. Gaika, his closest friends in town?

Even the old Sazi, the influential seer of the Valley, called him 'the Silent One and said he had the look of a man who had seen blood. The local tribesmen saw him as an ill omen, a bringer of misfortune, drought and misery. Unrest began to stir. Why had he come to the Valley? What did he want there? Who was Roger Hall, and what did he have to hide?

Hard times were coming, the old Sazi foretold the storm-clouds were gathering and the harsh years-long drought was about to break but something worse was to follow, and the carcasses of beasts and men would fill the river side by side, and the fate of the town and all who lived there would be changed forever.

This is the third novel by Theo Engela, a local South African author of the 1960’s and 70’s. Set in 1968, this story, never before published, was completed shortly before his death in 1985.]]>

African Assignment 50060544
Using imagery and place-names unfamiliar to 21st century people, the author introduces the reader to a simpler, less complicated world filled with wonder and mystery, where crime could still be perfect and the world lived fearfully under the ever-present threat of the Cold War.

Mesmerizing African folklore and almost-vanished cultures stand side by side. Rounded off in his own unique style, Theo Engela displays a biting sense of wit and irony in his work, which would probably not seem out of place in a Hitchcock serial or even in the Twilight Zone.

<![CDATA[The Pitfalls of South African Self-publishing]]> 50060384
So you wrote a book. Be it a novel, a collection of short stories, a how-to-braid-your-own-hair-without-a-mirror-and-a-third-hand guide, or an academic research paper about the fascinating night life of hump-backed snails - whatever it is, you need to get it out there where it will be read, appreciated and praised for the work of genius it really is!

The only trouble is, you don’t know what to do next - and who could blame you? After all, you live in South Africa, where almost everything is stacked against you from the start! Besides, you’ve never done this before! Writing is your game not cover design, working with images and associated software, marketing - and as for the internet, don’t even go there! It’s way too complicated! Right?

It can really feel that way sometimes but the truth is, modern self-publishing is really a lot easier than you may think. It doesn’t have to be as complicated as doing quantum physics say, like shooting a playing card through the center diamond with a pistol, blindfolded, while riding a dairy cow backwards. Christina Engela will show you how she does it - no cards, pistol, dairy cow, or blindfold required!]]>

The Upside of Sadness 50059978
Like many poets, Christina Engela started writing poetry out of a need to express her internalized teenage angst, gothic gloom, suppressed desires, drama and emotional trauma. Unlike most of those poets, Christina is also very good at seeing and presenting the brighter side of sorrow, or if you will, the upside of sadness.

Christina wrote her first poem at age 12. Funnily enough, it was called “Fear, and since then, she has over the course of her life, written a further 232 poems.

This collection presents a selection of 165 of them, covering a variety of topics such as philosophy, love and heartbreak, her observations of the world around her, her torment as a teen and adult living with gender dysphoria poetry she wrote in the face of prejudice and bigotry, culminating in her transition from the age of 26 to her final procedures in 2006 and some light-hearted fun.]]>

“Hugs are so vital a thing that there should never be so few of them that you can count all the ones you've had. Christina Engela

“Many of these quotes come from my activism days, when I wrote and shared articles almost daily from my blog “Sour Grapes: The Fruit of Ignorance to address various social injustices on local and international stages. Unfortunately, through the passage of time, I’ve grown to feel that the phrase “I told you so followed most of my warnings many years after, and as many activists in the field of human rights probably feel my warnings went unheeded. They were in fact, pearls cast before swine hence the title. Nevertheless, I decided to share my fragments of wisdom and philosophy with the world. Bang, Splat! 50059820
Dr. Gleichstein is a quantum physicist and as everyone knows by now, quantum physics is a little like ordinary physics, except that you spend a little more time looking for your eyebrows!

Vluffy, the Doktor’s companion, is a little gray dog who wears a flame-proof asbestos doggy jacket, and spends a lot of time hiding under things to avoid being vaporized by the Doktor’s occasional mishaps and in their home, even the mouse holes have blast-proof doors!

But something lurks inside the house with them something that has grown and changed and mutated from all the latent radiation and funky quantumness that has leaked into the house nasty, vicious, aggressive two-headed mutant cockroaches…aargh! Even the mice have packed up their mousy things and left for greener pastures They even chase poor Vluffy down the hall whatever would the neighborhood dogs say about that if they found out? Oh, the shame!

Even the Doktor is dismayed by this new development after all, not even tinned food is safe anymore! The mutant cockroaches begin to terrorize the Doktor and Vluffy. Something has to be done about this, of course and the Doktor is just the hombre to do it and so the Doktor clears his whiteboard for action! Vluffy hopes this can be solved without resorting to violins.

While on a routine deep-space mission to chart the frontier of unknown space, they stumble across an apparent shipwreck that poses quite a mystery. How had the Kilgary - a cargo carrier last seen light years away forty years before - reached that part of space before the Mercury? Why couldn’t the cause of death of its crew be determined? What was in the deleted log entry of the Kilgary and why had it been deleted?

The last thing Captain Stuart Flane expected while working to discover the answer to the enigma of the Kilgary, was a day-long running battle with the undead! Their troubles didn’t end there though, because the Mercury their only ride home was also in trouble!

And, as if all that wasn't bad enough, the Mercury still had to contend with a crew of paranormal investigators from the most popular TV show, and a ship-load of cursed items!

Wiggle Room 50012752
James Booth’s eyes flickered open. The lights were blinding. He remembered the car accident. He remembered the dog running into the road ahead of him, swerving, the screeching of brakes, a tree on the side of the road the awful jarring impact. He couldn’t remember anything after that. High Steaks 50012647
Troubled times had come to the small Terran Colony planet of Deanna and having amusing names for its sun (Ramalama) and two moons (Ding and Dong) hadn't made this quaint little world immune to bad things

After the shock assassination of a visiting member of the imperial family, and with the three largest cities on Deanna overrun by fascist troops, the local government goes into hiding. With the media and interweb firmly under fascist control, perception and reality begin to take a turn for the surreal - and once the fascists have control of Deanna, the stage is set. War is on its way.

The quirky little colony of Deanna is about to be enveloped in a destructive civil war - replete with a supporting cast of heroes, villains, aliens, victims, perpetrators, volunteers, vampires, space battles, bovine torpedoes - and a little time travel on the side.

Prodigal Sun 50012586
Sheriff Peggy-Ann Muller suddenly found herself hip-deep in strange events - even stranger than usual... and skinheads too - did she mention the skinheads?

Something had stirred in the darkness on the remote, usually idyllic Terran colony of Deanna - something Nazi And it only seemed to be getting worse!

Nobody could say when it started, or how, but something had changed. Without being noticed, hate had come to Deanna and made a nest there... and a terrible plot was about to hatch!

The quirky residents of the third-rate colony faced a challenge unlike any they had seen before. Was there still time to stop it? Only Time would tell if they were up for it.

"Engela’s eye for the quirky humor of even the darkest situations sets her writing apart from the masses. Her fiction combines oddball humor, in the tradition of writers like Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, with the best of traditional science fiction." Sarah Rutledge Fischer, Focus Mid-South Magazine

"Engela's latest work is packed with humour, challenging ideas, and science-fiction on a grand scale. It transports readers to a truly original world, filled with bizarre and memorable characters. It tackles social issues while reading like a Terry Pratchett, with some western and sci-fi elements to boot." Matthew 'Sand-Storm' Fick.

Loderunner 50012499
Returning from an evening in Mars City spent visiting relatives he didn’t know he had, Timaset Skooch arrived at the local space port to find his new acquisition stolen. A few minutes later, the crew of his slightly run-down loderunner "Celeste", returned from a nearby pub, blind drunk, puzzled, and now unemployed as well.

Ever since he’d decided to quit being a P.I. and to try his hand at running cargo instead, things had just blown up in Skooch’s face one day at a time (Florpavian Flamebirds tended to do that occasionally). Between the labor disputes and accidental deaths among the crew (who believed in settling disputes internally) Tim began to get a headache worse than the ones he got from getting kicked in the head. Just now, things had gone pear-shaped again, and he found himself in the middle of a kind of cat and mouse game with some cloaks and daggers thrown in for good measure.

He was sure it had something to do with the 10,000 credits he'd been offered to transport two passengers to an asteroid in the rings of - um, Jupiter (as soon as possible, no questions asked) by a middle-man with no neck and a tendency to smile a lot. Trouble was, now the mob - or someone - seemed to be out to kill them all. He was beginning to regret ever winning that card game...

Dead Man's Hammer 50012422
Deanna was just another third-rate colony in the Terran Empire and it was pretty much as boring a lump of rock as could be expected. That is, until Gary Beck, aka Beck the Badfeller ran over an obsidian crow with his jeepo on the highway to San Fedora and didn’t have a spare tire. Things pretty much went down hill from there.

An assassin had come to Atro City, an assassin with a score to settle. She was refined and pretty - but as poets might say, beauty can be deceiving - and the same poets who described Helen of Troy as the face that launched a thousand ships, might have written about Villainessa Tittle as the bitch that sank them.

As an assassin, she was the worst kind: she was absolutely terrifying, she took pride in her work, enjoyed what she did for a living and above all, she was bloody good at it - and this time unfortunately, it was absolutely 100 percent personal.

Beck the Badfeller - Deanna's most famous bounty hunter, was dead - and it was up to Cindy-Mei Winter, Sheriff Peg, Deputy Mike, Fred the Arborian - and Gary Beck himself - to solve it.

“Quite simply, Christina Engela is one of the best voices in sci-fi right now and to not read her work would be to miss a treat! Mark Woods, author of Time of Tides and Fear of the Dark.

The Time Saving Agency 50012322
Each day shapes the days that follow...

The Time Saving Agency liked having fresh agents on the job, who had a clear mind and steady hand. After all, time travel wasn’t for the faint of heart. The pay was good enough, but as Johnathan Scrooby decided long ago - even if he didn’t get paid for it, the thrill alone was payment enough! Then again, the TSA realized they couldn’t afford to have disgruntled employees with the power of God at their fingertips, so the pay was very, very good indeed!

Scrooby was extremely tense. His job at the Time Saving Agency was a tough one - gazillions of lives depended on him not screwing up. Once, he’d screwed up in only a small way, and people wore those little yellow smiley faces on t-shirts for decades afterwards... And that was only a small screw up!

Things happened at a certain time in a certain way, which in a sense, is what Life was all about. If they didn’t, then things would be completely different - which was why, a week ago, the American War of Independence was fought in Mexico. Yesterday Napoleon managed to dig a tunnel across the English Channel, invaded London - and everybody at the Agency ended up speaking French for a while. Sorting that out had been well, challenging... Mon dieu.

Something smelled funny in the Anals of History! Things were not as they were supposed to be. Someone somewhere was tinkering with the works, and it was up to Time Agent Scrooby - with a little help - to go back and fix it, or who knew what might happen next!]]>

Black Sunrise 50012261
Cindy-Mei, who until recently had been Agent Winter, C.I.A. - that's Colonial Intelligence Agency - had been one of their best agents... that is, until they threw her out for coming to work in a dress.

After that disappointing and sudden end to what had been a promising career, Mei rewarded herself with a long relaxing vacation in the outback to celebrate her gender reassignment and her new start in life. The first stop on her journey turned out to be a little backwater planet called Deanna...

As a third-rate colony in the Terran Empire, Deanna had more than its fair share of dull moments... Dull - but also definitely weird... Deanna orbited a star called Ramalama - and if you think that’s funny, Deanna’s two moons were called Ding and Dong, respectively. (This was a local joke.)

When a single Ruminarii Hammerhead - the first seen by Humans in over eighty years, arrived to invade the small backwater Terran colony of Deanna, rather than cowering in their basements or running away, the ordinary people of Atro City headed to the spaceport to meet the aliens when they landed - and grabbed anything remotely resembling a weapon on the way out the door!

As bombs fell on Atro City, Cindy-Mei found herself in exactly the right place at the right time - but what should she do? She'd hoped to put her violent and somehow depressing past behind her, but now it seemed her new beginning (and her holiday) were going to have to wait! The Gimp were back, and this was no time to be a sissy! She faced seemingly insurmountable odds in the midst of panic, hysteria - falling sherry - and people hiding under furniture! What would she do?

Thankfully, with the assistance of an alien walking, talking plant called Fred, a local bounty hunter called Beck the Badfeller - and the Skeggs Valley Dynamite Fishing Club, she wouldn't have to find out alone.

The Battle of Turtle Island darkened the skies with the dead. After nearly two days of fierce fighting, the Terrans finally had their venomous, defeated foe cornered in its own den. In orbit, where the battle was fought, the remnants of the once feared predatory Black Fleet drifted, blazing, while the Corsair civilization below breathed its last.

But not all the great Corsairs of legend had been captured. Some including one Sona Kilroy the most dangerous of them all had slipped the Terran’s net, and threatened to rebuild the Corsair menace. It was up to Mykl d’Angelo, captain of the Antares, and a mystery-man called Adam, to stop him.

Panic! Horror In Space #3 36659371
Miora: After a few hair-raising assignments and some even more harsh treatment at the hands of his skeptical superiors, Captain Flane and the crew of the Terran starship Mercury were only too happy to be sent on a truly mind-numbingly boring assignment: to survey and catalogue every planet, moon, asteroid and speck of space-dust in a previously unexplored star system. There, on a long-dead world scarred by an ancient war of self-annhilation, they discover a deserted alien ship on the surface, stranded since the great calamity that ended the burgeoning civilization that once lived there. The fact that Flane’s best friend and executive officer, Commander Vic Chapman, got all aflap about detecting life on board that ship, didn’t make things any easier.

The Big Rain: ‘It’s a funny old ‘verse, Stuart Flane Captain of the Terran starship Mercury, thought. Most people who found out a cursed object was responsible for the untimely messy and unavoidably mysterious deaths of 13 people, would steer the hell clear of it but for some weird reason, some people seemed to think that owning it was a smart move or that it would end well for them! Unfortunately for Flane and his intrepid crew, their latest assignment being sent to relieve a terraforming plant on Atooin of such a cursed object things did not go without a hitch but then, the thing was called ‘the Jug of Death, and obviously with good reason…]]>

Panic! Horror In Space #2 36659361
Dead Center: Some people enjoy watching paranormal TV shows but not Stuart Flane, captain of the Terran starship Mercury. Having just narrowly missed being a ghost or worse, himself after a weird incident involving reanimated corpses and alien nanobots, Flane wanted nothing to do with playing host to a bunch of paranormal investigators for a popular TV show called ‘Specter Adventures. Neither did he fancy a 12 hour jaunt on Floridia-7, which was described by some as ‘the most haunted abandoned Terran outpost in the galaxy but since he owed Commodore Peters for covering his ass after he lost nearly his entire crew to the zoms, he reluctantly agreed. And that, pretty much, is where things started going off the rails.

Through A Dark Glassy: Haunted paintings. Possessed dolls. Nightmarish accursed items that leave messy trails of misery, horror and death behind them through the pages of history. Regular folk would run a mile if someone offered them such a terrifying object, so what sort of person would want to actually collect them? More importantly, why would anyone think it was safe to transport these items via a courier service with only a poorly printed paper sign reading “WARNING: ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY DO NOT OPEN stuck on the box? What if someone did? Even more of interest to Captain Flane of the intrepid starship Mercury, why did it always have to be his ship that drew the short straw?“]]>

Panic! Horror In Space 34849139
Of all the starships in the Terran Space Fleet, the I.S.S. Mercury is probably the unluckiest ship in history. Not once, not twice, but many times over, the same hapless crew - give or take a few dozen casualties - on a supposed voyage of deep space exploration, stumble into the weird, wake the creepy and trip over the downright terrifying and possibly even supernatural...

This book contains a short story called “Wiggle Room Christina Engela’s very first attempt at writing completely in the horror genre, as an entry for this publisher’s in-house writing contest ‘Guys versus Girls held in July 2015. This is a story involving a scary old hospital, a nurse, a scalpel, a bedpan, and of course - a dark and stormy night.

Space Vacation 32493139
Of all the starships in the Terran Space Fleet, the I.S.S. Mercury is probably the unluckiest ship in history. Not once, not twice, but many times over, the same hapless crew - give or take a few dozen casualties - on a supposed voyage of deep space exploration, stumble into the weird, wake the creepy and trip over the downright terrifying and possibly even supernatural...

While on a routine deep-space mission to chart the frontier of unknown space, Captain Stuart Flane and the crew of the Mercury encounter an alien marooned in a ship wrecked on the surface of their long-dead world - but is the alien really all that they seem to be? Did the shuttle the Mercury recovered in deep space - the one that turned out to be the last remnant of a starliner that disappeared thirty years earlier, hold the key to the puzzle? Would Flane be able to sleep that night if he found out? And, as if all that wasn't enough to jeopardize Flane's already shaky hold on reality, the Mercury is sent by Admiral Tawney himself to help out an old friend who has difficulties with a cursed object!

"Life Signs" is the second title in the Panic! Horror In Space series by Christina Engela.]]>

Innocent Minds 32492794

Innocent Minds is a “children’s story for adults an endearing little illustrated tale set in the Quantum Series universe created by Christina Engela.]]>

For this anthology, vampire Michelle Belanger convinced nearly two dozen real-life vampires to break the code of silence that has kept their fascinating subculture shrouded in secrecy.

Sometimes provocative, sometimes surprisingly down-to-earth, these candid firsthand accounts come from both psi vampires who feed on energy and sanguine vampires who drink actual blood. Their true stories shed light on a variety of topics, including awakening to vampirism, the compulsion to feed and feeding practices, donor ethics and etiquette, and vampire traditions and codes of behavior.]]>

"HE LOST ALL FAITH IN THE STRAIGHTFORWARD OPERATION OF CAUSE AND EFFECT THE DAY HE GOT UP INTENDING TO CATCH UP WITH SOME READING AND ENDED UP ON A PREHISTORIC EARTH WITH A MAN FROM BETELGEUSE AND A SPACESHIP-LOAD OF ALIEN TELEPHONE SANITISERS...".

Left at the end of LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING with the address for God's Final Message To His Creation, Arthur Dent let this crucial information slip his mind. He tries everything to jog his memory - meditation, mind-reading, hitting himself about the head with blunt objects. But none of it works. Of course, as everyone knows, the answer lies in making life flash before your eyes...

“Wild satire . . . The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes.” Chicago Tribune

The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads—so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation.

They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-president of the galaxy; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox.

How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert “universal Armageddon and save life as we know it—and don’t know it!

“Adams is one of those rare an author who, one senses, has as much fun writing as one has reading.” Arizona Daily Star]]>

Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle through space powered by pure improbability - and desperately in search of a place to eat. Among Arthur's motley shipmates are Ford Prefect, a long-time friend and contributor to the The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the three-armed, two-headed ex-president of the galaxy; Tricia McMilan, a fellow Earth refuge who's gone native (her name is Trillian now); and Marvin, who suffers nothing and no one gladly.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don't forget to bring a towel!]]>

Starman Jones 351 The stars were closed to Max Jones. To get into space you either needed connections, a membership in the Guild, or a whole lot more money than Max, the son of a widowed, poor mother, was ever going to have. What Max does have going for him are his uncle’s prized astrogation manuals—book on star navigation that Max literally commits to memory word for word, equation for equation.

From the First Golden Age of Heinlein, this is the so-called juvenile (written, Heinlein always claims, just as much for adults) that started them all and made Heinlein a legend for multiple generations of readers.
