<![CDATA[Quest in Yosemite National Park: A Mystery Adventure (National Park Mystery Series Book 5)]]> 220482997 Another Edge-Of-Your-Seat Adventure in the Bestselling Series.

Ages 7 to 14 - With over 60 Illustrations - A Page-Turner Full of Twists and Turns

The National Park Mystery Series

Before Jake’s grandfather died, he was on the trail of a centuries-old mystery. He has entrusted that mystery to Jake, leaving behind a set of hidden codes, riddles, maps, and other clues that lead Jake and his friends on a scavenger hunt while camping in the most rugged wilderness of the national parks.

The mystery unfolds as Jake, Amber, and Wes learn about survival skills, natural history, integrity, character, and friendship.

Along the way, they discover they are not the only ones on this quest. An elusive shadow group is close on their heels.

Illustrated by the author, these page-turning adventures are designed to capture the imagination of even the most reluctant of young readers. Parents looking for a delightful read-aloud adventure will find it hard to put down.

If your family loves the enchanted lands of our national parks, this series will take you to hidden places and breathtaking landscapes. If you enjoy reading mystery adventures like the Hardy Boys or Gary Paulsen’s survival story, Hatchet, you’ll love this fifth installment of the National Park Mystery Series.

Start this epic adventure on your Kindle app, or begin the journey with a paperback copy.

Can I start the series with Book 5, or do I have to start with Book 1?
You can with any book in the series, but it's most enjoyed by starting with Book 1 and reading them in order. All books have a brief preface to catch the reader up on the story without spoiling the plot.

Why does it cost more than the other books in the series?
Book 5 is 40% longer than Book 1 (by word count) and has a total of 60 illustrations. All that makes it more expensive to print, so the book costs 8% more than the others in the series.]]>

The Old Curiosity Shop 429024 The Old Curiosity Shop is edited with notes and an introduction by Norman Page in Penguin Classics.

Little Nell Trent lives in the quiet gloom of the old curiosity shop with her ailing grandfather, for whom she cares with selfless devotion. But when they are unable to pay their debts to the stunted, lecherous and demonic money-lender Daniel Quilp, the shop is seized and they are forced to flee, thrown into a shadowy world in which there seems to be no safe haven. Dickens's portrayal of the innocent, tragic Nell made The Old Curiosity Shop an instant bestseller that captured the hearts of the nation, even as it was criticised for its sentimentality by figures such as Oscar Wilde. Yet alongside the story's pathos are some of Dickens's greatest comic and grotesque creations: the ne'er-do-well Dick Swiveller, the mannish lawyer Sally Brass, the half-starved 'Marchioness' and the lustful, loathsome Quilp himself.

This edition, based on the original text of 1841, contains an introduction by Norman Page discussing the various contrasting themes of the novel and its roots in Dickens's own personal tragedy, with prefaces to the 1841 and 1848 editions, a chronology, notes and original illustrations produced for the serial version.

Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. His most famous books, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield and The Pickwick Papers, have been adapted for stage and screen and read by millions.

If you enjoyed The Old Curiosity Shop, you might like Dickens's Hard Times, also available in Penguin Classics.]]>

<![CDATA[Dream It! Do It! (The People, The Places, The Projects): My Half-Century Creating Disney's Magic Kingdoms]]> 16250923 Marty Sklar was hired by The Walt Disney Company after his junior year at UCLA, and began his Disney career at Disneyland in July 1955, the month before the park opened. He spent his first decade at Disney as "the kid," the very youngest of the creative team Walt had assembled at WED Enterprises. But despite his youth, his talents propelled him forward into substantial responsibility: he became Walt's speech writer, penned Walt's and Roy's messages in the company's annual report, composed most of the publicity and marketing materials for Disneyland, conceived presentations for the U.S. government, devised initiatives to obtain sponsors to enable new Disneyland developments, and wrote a twenty-four-minute film expressing Walt's philosophy for the Walt Disney World project and Epcot. He was Walt's literary right-hand man.

Over the next forty years, Marty Sklar rose to become president and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, and he devoted his entire career to creating, enhancing, and expanding Walt's magical empire. This beautifully written and enlightening book is Marty's own retelling of his epic Disney journey, a grand adventure that lasted over half a century.]]>

Capturing an era―and preserving the stories they have told their daughters, their mentees, their husbands, and their friends―a dozen women Imagineers have written personal stories from their decades designing and building the Disney world-wide empire of theme parks. Illustrated with the women’s personal drawings and photos in addition to archival Imagineering images, the book represents a broad swath of Imagineering’s creative disciplines during a time of unprecedented expansion. Intertwined with memories of Disney legends are glimpses of what it takes behind the scenes to create a theme park, and the struggles unique to women who were becoming more and more important, visible and powerful in a workplace that was overwhelmingly male.

Each chapter is unique, from a unique Imagineer’s perspective and experience. These women spent their careers telling stories in three dimensions for the public. Now they’ve assembled their stories in print, with the hope that their experiences will continue to entertain and illuminate.]]>

As indicated in the foreword, the women largely do not see themselves as feminists and to me that really worked for this book and in fact made the woman power message more impactful and it's insights into Disney culture and the world views at large to feel deeper. That many of the authors recognized that other minorities along with people with looked down upon traits and mannerisms had suffered in ways very similar to women made its message so much more powerful and impressive.

Disney truly has had some problems during its time, but it equally does have some magic to it that keeps it pushing through the problems encountered. This book beautifully illustrates those facts with an upbeat note that can leave one hoping for the best.

<![CDATA[The Gorgon's Fury (Tales of Newel and Doren #1)]]> 216319402 #1 New York Times best-selling author Brandon Mull returns to Fablehaven with a brand-new story starring the comedic satyrs, Newel and Doren, and their battle against a gorgon.

Satyrs Newel and Doren are maturing into more responsible citizens after helping put an end to the dragon rebellion. But the thought of growing out of adolescence has the two goatmen in crisis mode. If that isn’t enough to worry about, a few unlucky inhabitants of Fablehaven have been found petrified, turned to stone, including fellow satyrs. Could this new threat be the workings of a dangerous gorgon?

Newel and Doren become intrigued after an informant divulges information about a legendary Listening Doll—a talisman with the power to reveal the antidote for any magical malady—hidden somewhere in the Florida swamplands. If the mystical doll can solve any problem, maybe she has the answer of how to turn back the clock, so they won’t have to grow up.

Perhaps a trip to Florida is just what Newel and Doren need to get their mojo in time to win the annual Satyr Games. Two new challengers, Barrett and Hoff, are talking smack about dethroning Newel and Doren as perennial champions. And the new opponents have a smartphone!

Finding the Listening Doll and saving Fablehaven is important, sure. But Newel and Doren are also desperate for a smartphone of their own. Let the adventure and the games begin!]]>

This is clever, for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, since it gets children to write on their own, but still induces children to think selfishly and ultimately destructively since it also teaches to put up with the destructive malarkey from the so called friends. Being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I strive to be very open to the idea of other scriptures. When I first heard about the Apocrypha, I thought, oh, how cool, more writings about Jesus, possibly scripture! Then I read the section in the Doctrine & Covenants (91) where Joseph Smith had asked the Lord about the Apocrypha and the Lord says that it is mostly translated correctly, but not largely inspired by God like true scripture is. I wondered then how much of it could be good and set a goal to read it. It took a little over 40 years to read it, and I have read only the New Testament portion and I am sad to report that not much of that portion seems inspired at all. It seems mostly to consist of the precepts of men very lightly mingled with scripture. Very few of the stories even agree with each other and even fewer agree with other scriptures. I am at best disappointed with the Apocrypha. At worst, I feel hoodwinked by the very idea of the Apocrypha. The few parts that are worth anything do at least give insight into the culture and times of the authors. Mostly I suggest to leave a very sturdy 100 foot pole (if not longer) between yourself and the Apocrypha.

It isn't that this book is better than the last, but it so well build upon the last book that it may be easy to say that. This book simply picks up from book 3 and 3.5 leading the reader through the ramifications from the previous books and helps one to simply see the pure truths that are too often obscured by our foolish human prejudices. For instance, I'm sure there are plenty who assume that after all Kal has been through that he would be completely cured, but as he said near the end of this book, "swearing the oaths doesn't fix us . . . it just gives us a path towards getting fixed."

For me, the major message from this book is that we, as people, hurt and then we feel better, but then we hurt again and feel better again, so the trick is to remember that even though we hurt, a season of feeling better is on its way, if we but hold on or keep taking that next step talked about in the last book.

Incredible is another good word to use here. Not sure exactly how much time has passed since Oathbringer, and I think it mentions it in the book, but I didn't commit that to memory, anyway, there has been some time passed and the war is not particularly going either way yet, perhaps slightly towards the Knights Radiants, but certainly not fast enough. Anyway, in an effort to make sure the enemy is not making more ground in an area where many people have been lost or stripped of their stormlight, it is decided to send in a lone ship to spy it out. Things of course do not go as planned in many different ways, but in Mr. Sanderson's excellent style each main character going through it learns or remembers something profound. The three that really affected me are:
1) Closeness to someone does not negate the possibility of that person betraying you and yet still be ready to listen to their side and patch things up to whatever level you can handle.
2) Not liking the actions of someone is nowhere near hating them, yet can provide just as much an opportunity for forgiveness on both sides.
3) Protecting loved ones from you can be just as worthy a task as protecting them or even yourself from others.

All in all, I'd call this a very worthy addition to the Stormlight Archives series!

2025 Reread - Nothing to add nor especially take away. Great novella in the series.

<![CDATA[The Last Breath of a Love: When Hearts Speak in Silence]]> 221454134 The Last Breath of a Love
When Hearts Speak in Silence
In the stillness, where words fall short, two people can somehow speak without speaking. Sitting side by side in a quiet room, they feel more connected than ever, even as they both know their time together is ending. The silence between them is full, filled with all the things they’ve shared—every laugh, every touch, and every memory. She holds his hand, and he gently squeezes hers back. There’s no need for words because their silence says it I love you. I always will.
In that moment, each detail stands out as if they’re seeing each other clearly for the first time. She memorizes the lines of his face, and he savors the warmth of her touch. They know they’re holding on to a love that’s about to slip away, and it makes everything feel intense, delicate, precious.
Love like this doesn’t just fade. Even when words aren’t spoken, it stays with them. It’s a quiet flame that keeps burning, something each will carry. As they sit there, breathing together one last time, they both feel This isn’t an ending. It’s a promise. Even in silence, their love lives on.

<![CDATA[Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive, #3)]]> 34002132 Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.]]>

Where does one start with reviewing a book that is so massive in so many different ways? More often than not I have felt that what I want to say would give some stuff away, but I think I may have found a way to mention the most important things I feel should be mentioned about it. I had originally thought that the most important nugget of truth from this book is that the most important step someone can take is the next one. Notice it doesn't say the next right thing like Disney corp. thought it should be (from Frozen 2). Why is that? Because, let's face it, as humans we cannot depend upon ourselves to do what is right from one moment to the next. We often think that we are doing the right thing but then (as several of the characters in this book discovered) we see that our "steps" were flawed. Which leads to the next big truth, the one I think is even bigger. We need to accept that we have and will continue to make mistakes, but we should never accept that flawed person is who we are. Also, we all too often look for some magical way to erase our pain, but we really do need our pain so it can aid us in molding the new us. For only in truly trying to change ourselves can we actually make it so our pain doesn't control us.

I also want to mention that I saw that some other reviewers had mentioned that they were disappointed in Caleden. I see their point, but I think what they are taking as weakness are really demonstrations of great control and strength. In fact a part of his growth was to understand that he had made mistakes but could learn from them.

Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

<![CDATA[A Discovery of Witches (All Souls, #1)]]> 8667848
Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.]]>

I know, I know. It's every teenage girls big confession, but most of them at least have a chance. Cute boy next door and all that.

Not me, I just so happen to have a crush on a guy that is way out of my league.
Ryland LaRue is insanely hot, insanely rich, and way too nice for his own good.

It's clear I can't have him, and not just because his evil overlord father hates my guts. My crush on Ryland is not my only secret. I'm hiding something bigger than that. It's the reason my dad left, and I am pretty sure it's why his 'magical' cult is now following me around.

The only problem? Ryland has a secret too, and his just happens to have all the answers I need.

Which brings us to that kiss…]]>

<![CDATA[A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II]]> 40595446 The never-before-told story of one woman's heroism that changed the course of the Second World War

In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her."

This spy was Virginia Hall, a young American woman--rejected from the foreign service because of her gender and her prosthetic leg--who talked her way into the spy organization deemed Churchill's "ministry of ungentlemanly warfare," and, before the United States had even entered the war, became the first woman to deploy to occupied France.

Virginia Hall was one of the greatest spies in American history, yet her story remains untold. Just as she did in Clementine, Sonia Purnell uncovers the captivating story of a powerful, influential, yet shockingly overlooked heroine of the Second World War. At a time when sending female secret agents into enemy territory was still strictly forbidden, Virginia Hall came to be known as the "Madonna of the Resistance," coordinating a network of spies to blow up bridges, report on German troop movements, arrange equipment drops for Resistance agents, and recruit and train guerilla fighters. Even as her face covered WANTED posters throughout Europe, Virginia refused order after order to evacuate. She finally escaped with her life in a grueling hike over the Pyrenees into Spain, her cover blown, and her associates all imprisoned or executed. But, adamant that she had "more lives to save," she dove back in as soon as she could, organizing forces to sabotage enemy lines and back up Allied forces landing on Normandy beaches. Told with Purnell's signature insight and novelistic flare, A Woman of No Importance is the breathtaking story of how one woman's fierce persistence helped win the war.]]>

<![CDATA[The Hope of Elantris (Elantris, #1.5)]]> 10852065 The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. At that point, Elantris had only been out in stores for about seven or eight months, but I actually hadn't written anything new on the story or world since 2000, when I'd finished the first draft of the original book. This story was originally posted for sale on Amazon.com; once the contract with them ran out, I posted it on my website.

There were always a few holes in the manuscript where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be read after you've finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax. In the , I've written a further explanation of why I wrote this piece. Some of you may find it interesting to read this ahead of time; I put it in the annotation, however, as I know others would rather enjoy the story without bias beforehand, then read my thoughts afterward.

Either way, if you haven't read the novel
Elantris, this contains major spoilers. Might I suggest reading the book first? This story won't work at all for you if you haven't.

As always, thanks for reading!]]>

A heretic thief is the empire’s only hope in this fascinating tale that inhabits the same world as the popular novel, Elantris.

Shai is a Forger, a foreigner who can flawlessly copy and re-create any item by rewriting its history with skillful magic. Condemned to death after trying to steal the emperor’s scepter, she is given one opportunity to save herself. Though her skill as a Forger is considered an abomination by her captors, Shai will attempt to create a new soul for the emperor, who is almost dead.

Probing deeply into his life, she discovers Emperor Ashravan’s truest nature—and the opportunity to exploit it. Her only possible ally is one who is truly loyal to the emperor, but councilor Gaotona must overcome his prejudices to understand that Shai’s forgery is as much artistry as it is deception.

The Analects 27297
The Analects are a collection of Confucius’s sayings brought together by his pupils shortly after his death in 497 BC. Together they express a philosophy, or a moral code, by which Confucius, one of the most humane thinkers of all time, believed everyone should live. Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of one’s fellow man, he argued that the pursuit of virtue should be every individual’s supreme goal. And, while following the Way, or the truth, might not result in immediate or material gain, Confucius showed that it could nevertheless bring its own powerful and lasting spiritual rewards.

This edition contains a detailed introduction exploring the concepts of the original work, a bibliography and glossary and appendices on Confucius himself, The Analects and the disciples who compiled them.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.]]>

Although he seemed ever ready to pass out judgements upon others, he was just as quick to condemn the practice in others and yet seemed to have been working on that. I think too that it wasn't his intent to start up a religion so to speak, just a school of thought that encouraged a way of life that would improve others. I may be off there, but based on how he seemed to be reticent to be called more than a teacher and yet advocated doing one's part when asked, it seems like he just wanted people to find a better way to live.

However, he didn't get true equality of people. He too highly elevated people with enough time to ponder the mysteries of life and males in general, but put down general workers and especially women. That was where his culture and time came in though, not that the fact excuses him, it just should help us of today be less judgemental towards him.]]>

This book does definitely live up to what it's name means, a collection of short philosophical stories or anecdotes. As far as Confucius, he seems to have been a product of his age and culture. If this book is accurate to any degree it seems like the Chinese culture already believed most of what Confucius taught, he just consolidated it all together and gave them incentives to make it all a lifestyle.

Although he seemed ever ready to pass out judgements upon others, he was just as quick to condemn the practice in others and yet seemed to have been working on that. Elantris (Elantris, #1) 68427
Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping—based on their correspondence—to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

A rare epic fantasy that doesn't recycle the classics and that is a complete and satisfying story in one volume, Elantris is fleet and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about. It's also the wonderful debut of a welcome new star in the constellation of fantasy.]]>

This is an absolutely fabulous book! What a well weaved story and such interesting characters! The heroine of the story so reminds me of my dear wife. The high ranking priest of the opposing church is quite fascinating as well, especially near the end. This is one of those books that I like to read again and again!

I really enjoyed this book! I know some reviewers said it seems like something out of junior high and I suppose that it may give off some of that vibe, but not enough to distract from the good points.

Although some of the events were easy to predict, they were still well hidden from the characters and story line. The premise is quite cool about bringing in the brightest and most gifted to give ideas and fresh perspective to the regulars.

The bad guys are alright, a little predictable but still hateable.

De Anima (On the Soul) 794501 'The soul is, so to speak, the first principle of living things. We seek to contemplate and know its nature and substance'

For the Pre-Socratic philosophers the soul was the source of movement and sensation, while for Plato it was the seat of being, metaphysically distinct from the body that it was forced temporarily to inhabit. Plato's student Aristotle was determined to test the truth of both these beliefs against the emerging sciences of logic and biology. His examination of the huge variety of living organisms - the enormous range of their behaviour, their powers and their perceptual sophistication - convinced him of the inadequacy both of a materialist reduction and of a Platonic sublimation of the soul. In De Anima, he sought to set out his theory of the soul as the ultimate reality of embodied form and produced both a masterpiece of philosophical insight and a psychology of perennially fascinating subtlety.

Hugh Lawson-Tancred's masterly translation makes De Anima fully accessible to modern readers. In his introduction, he places Aristotle's theories at the heart of contemporary debates on the philosophy of life and being.]]>

This book definitely well displays Aristotle's abilities. However, is it something that people should continue to read? I think that depends upon the person reading. Most of the time I felt bogged down in too much wordiness that makes it too hard to understand or appreciate, but every so often the words would pop out clearly to me and I could see why people still read him. I think that reading a classic is never a waste of time, but sometimes you have to take them with an understanding that their understanding seems basic to us.

With his 95 Theses, Luther proposed a debate on the subject, but ultimately, he was excommunicated and the Protestant Reformation began. Growing up, mostly due to a misunderstanding about the word theses and what the book was written for, I thought that this was about all of Mr Luther's grievances against the Catholic church. Even with understanding that he really hoped to wake-up the church leadership with this to one subject, I have to say that sometimes the writing feels a little petty. However, there are some pretty cool lines in here too. I hope to read more of Mr Luther's writings in the future and come to understand the man better.

<![CDATA[All is Well (The Work and the Glory #9)]]> 19798469 All Is Well, the powerful and moving ninth volume of the series The Work and the Glory, brings to a close the Restoration-era portion of this epic story. It follows the fictional Steed family from June 1846 to October 1847 as they participate in some of the most pivotal and dramatically charged events in Church history, including the migration of the Saints from the banks of the Missouri River to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake.

As this volume opens, the Steeds have been scattered and the family is only split up further as the story unfolds. Will and Alice's voyage aboard the Brooklyn nears its end as the ship approaches the California shore. Peter and Kathryn continue their journey westward in the Donner-Reed party. In Nauvoo, Melissa and Carl find their situation growing increasingly dangerous and their marriage more and more strained. Other Steed family members are temporarily encamped at the Missouri River, where the Saints will set up winter quarters. When the United States government, at war with Mexico, calls for five hundred Mormon volunteers to form a battalion, some of the Steeds march with that battalion in its history-making trek across the continents. Meanwhile, other family members become part of the pioneer companies that, at last, establish in the West a place of refuge for the Saints.

As with the previous books in the series, this volume is populated with a host of interesting characters, both fictional and historical. And even though throughout most of the story the Steeds are separated from one another, hope remains that somehow all of them will be reunited, and with the rest of the Saints they will make the chorus swell: “All is well! All is well!

And that's what I wanted to share in this book, Be The Sunshine. It's not a book about how to be happy or seven ways to stay positive. These pages are about being yourself, showing the world your true colors, and being mindful of the moment. These chapters contain personal stories so that we all can experience love and joy for ourselves as well as shining that light on those around us!

<![CDATA[So Great a Cause (The Work and the Glory #8)]]> 19860052 “Westward, ho! is the cry in So Great a Cause, volume 8 of the series The Work and the Glory. This installment depicts the early part of one of the most engaging chapters in Church history, the great migration west, and interwoven with that epic story is the continuing saga of the fictional Steed family.

It is early 1846, and many Saints, including most of the Steeds, begin the difficult journey across Iowa as they move toward a new and distant home in the Rocky Mountains. Among them is the volatile Joshua Steed, who, intent on accompanying his now widowed mother, has temporarily left his wife and children behind in Nauvoo. With trouble brewing in that dying city, will they be in danger? And what is the secret that Joshua feels compelled to keep hidden from the other Steeds?

Meanwhile, Will and Alice continue their voyage with another group of Saints aboard the ship Brooklyn. Life-threatening storms, deaths at sea, a visit to beautiful tropical islands these become part of their experiences as the sailing vessel makes its way around South America and back up toward California. Also headed for California is the company in which Peter and Kathryn are traveling the famous and ultimately ill-fated Donner-Reed party.

Against this backdrop of sweeping historical events, the personal drama of the Steed family reaches new levels of emotional and spiritual power, leaving readers with an abiding appreciation for the early Saints' commitment to “so great a cause.

<![CDATA[Daughter of Moloka'i (Moloka'i, #2)]]> 40135801 The highly anticipated sequel to Alan Brennert’s acclaimed book club favorite, and national bestseller, Moloka'i

Alan Brennert’s beloved novel Moloka'i, currently has over 600,000 copies in print. This companion tale tells the story of Ruth, the daughter that Rachel Kalama—quarantined for most of her life at the isolated leprosy settlement of Kalaupapa—was forced to give up at birth.

The book follows young Ruth from her arrival at the Kapi'olani Home for Girls in Honolulu, to her adoption by a Japanese couple who raise her on a strawberry and grape farm in California, her marriage and unjust internment at Manzanar Relocation Camp during World War II—and then, after the war, to the life-altering day when she receives a letter from a woman who says she is Ruth’s birth mother, Rachel.

Daughter of Moloka'i expands upon Ruth and Rachel’s 22-year relationship, only hinted at in Moloka'i. It’s a richly emotional tale of two women—different in some ways, similar in others—who never expected to meet, much less come to love, one another. And for Ruth it is a story of discovery, the unfolding of a past she knew nothing about. Told in vivid, evocative prose that conjures up the beauty and history of both Hawaiian and Japanese cultures, it’s the powerful and poignant tale that readers of Moloka'i have been awaiting for fifteen years.]]>

This book didn't quite capture the same feeling the first book did, not that either was quite as good as Agatha Christie. It seems like the first one had a few more ups and downs it, while this one went mostly down. Not that it has terrible writing or anything like that, it just seemed to be telling a story, nothing more, like two neighbors chatting about the goings on of the neighborhood, not a proper mystery.

This story completes the introductions of all the characters that so many have come to know and love. As in the first volume, there are a lot of similarities between the versions that the Walt Disney company has put out and this. I appreciate both for the mediums and time periods they were created in and for. Also as before, I find myself more attracted to the written form as it appeals more to my style. For one thing, in the written form, while the characters may become bothered by one another, they always seem to work it completely out rather than holding on to grudges. That regrettably doesn't happen very often in life, but it sure does seem to me to be something that should happen much more often.

<![CDATA[The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (Doctor Dolittle, #2)]]> 325416 The Story of Doctor Dolittle. In his second outing titled The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, the maverick physician takes on a new assistant, Tommy Stubbins. The story is structured as a first person account given by Tommy, who is now a very old man. The boy who was the son of the village cobbler first meets Doctor Dolittle when he takes a hurt squirrel to the doctor for treatment. Tommy and the doctor quickly become friends, and the boy soon learns how to communicate with animals in their own languages. The remarkable talking parrot, Polynesia and other amazing creatures from the previous book also appear in this sequel. The mysterious disappearance of a friend of the doctor's called Luke the Hermit sets off a train of strange events. And Tommy finds himself accompanying the good doctor on an exciting, hazardous voyage to find Long Arrow, a native American and the son of Golden Arrow, who is reputed to be the greatest living naturalist in the world. The kind hearted, quirky, animal rights activist Doctor Dolittle dominates the plot. His enduring humanitarian approach to the world around him, his desire for peaceful coexistence among all and his concern for the environment make him a memorable and endearing character. This as much an adventure story as a strong appeal for compassion towards the innumerable species that share our planet with us. There are shipwrecks, South American and Mediterranean locations, underwater explorations where they discover a giant sea snail and wonderful descriptions of land and sea. Critics of Hugo Lofting's work point out that there are several passages which are now politically incorrect. However, readers would do well to remember that these books were written more than a hundred years ago, when attitudes to colonization and race were quite different. In the dozen or so books featuring Doctor Dolittle, the author Hugo Lofting ensures that a wide variety of themes, locations and ideas are explored. The books were originally illustrated by the author himself, as he was a talented artist and naturalist himself.

Although this book changed the way the series is narrated (from a third person omniscient to a second person), it still continues the thoughtful storytelling of the first. I think the writers of the Dr. Dolittle movie with Robert Downey Jr may have lightly based their movie on this book, emphasis on lightly. The basic premise is the same between the movie and this book though. I think it is to be more thoughtful and kind.

<![CDATA[No Unhallowed Hand (The Work and the Glory #7)]]> 20095943 Picking up the story shortly after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, No Unhallowed Hand volume 7 in the series The Work and the Glory takes the saga of the Restoration the the fictional Steed family from the end of June 1844 to February 1846.

As this volume opens, it is a time of great sadness and of uncertainty. Having lost their beloved prophet, the Saints witness a series of power plays by those who would use the opportunity to further their own interests. It is not long, however, before the Lord's purposes are made apparent and the Twelve take their rightful position as leaders of the Church, with Brigham Young at their head. For a time, an uneasy peace seems to prevail in Illinois, but then the Nauvoo Charter is revoked, anti-Mormon hatred is again inflamed by those involved in the Prophet's death, mobs burn homes in small Mormon settlements, and eventually the Saints again find themselves faced with the threat of violent expulsion unless they agree to leave the state. The situation promises to divide the Steeds. Who among them will go west and who will stay? What will Joshua's and Melissa's part-member families do?

This installment in the series contains not only its share of fascinating real-life history, but also a number of plot twists involving the Steeds that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. The story of their lives underscores the prophetic nature of Joseph Smith's words that, indeed, “no unhallowed hand can stop the work.

Romance has been a part of other Agatha Christie novels, but I think this novel did it best, at least from what I've read so far. Moloka'i (Moloka'i, #1) 8366378 400 Alan Brennert Roy 4 Thoughtful and Interesting

This book makes some very interesting points about how many different sides dealt with leprosy. It is very poignant and thoughtful in how it approaches that subject and I learned a lot about leprosy in the Hawaiian islands.

Surprisingly, the author only gives one view concerning the annexation of Hawaii to the U.S. I'm not trying to say how the business people overthrew the monarchy is right, I can certainly agree it wasn't. However my study has shown that the majority of Hawaiians were welcoming to the change. The newspapers of the day, mostly run and edited by native Hawaiians were very welcoming to the change and cited many depredations that the Ali'i had committed as to why they wanted the change. The general people chimed in too and mostly seemed welcoming as well. I'm sure there were plenty that were not happy with the change, but I don't think it was the majority made out in this book.

Also, it was interesting how he described The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The words he used, such as parishioners and clergy suggests that he doesn't know much about the church, but it is nice that he included them in the narrative since they did have a presence in Kalaupapa.

Overall, I call this a really good book and a worthy read especially if you want to come to understand leprosy.]]>

<![CDATA[Praise to the Man (The Work and the Glory #6)]]> 20113232 Written with a dramatic intensity and an eye for historical detail that thousands of readers have come to appreciate in previous volumes, Praise to the Man volume 6 in the series The Work and the Glory follows the story of the restored Church and of the ficitonal Steed family from the summer of 1841 to the summer of 1844.

Several momentous events take place during this period in Church history: Nauvoo becomes a well-established city; the Relief Society is founded; the endowment is administered for the first time in this dispensation; Joseph Smith becomes a candidate for president of the United States; he delivers his monumental King Follett Discourse. Meanwhile, however, dark forces outside as well as inside the Church are at work to destroy Joseph and the Restoration cause. Before the story ends, the powers of evil will have swept across the Church, taking out some in very high places, making numerous others waver, and taking Joseph and his brother Hyrum to their date with destiny in a town called Carthage.

Woven throughout these events are the lives of the Steeds. As Joshua sees the Mormons gaining more influence with his wife and children, his patience finally reaches the breaking point. Will must resolve his feelings for Jenny Pottsworth and his desire to know if the Church is true. New hope is born in Jessica's life when she is offered a new teaching position. Mary Ann and other Steed women participate in the beginnings of the Relief Society. But before long, whisperings reach the ears of some of the Steeds about curious teachings and practices going on in Nauvoo specifically it is rumored that God may have restored the ancient practice of plural marriage. How will they respond when they find out that at least some of the rumors are true? The issue becomes a trial of faith that shakes the Steed family to its very roots.

At the center of this volume are the final days of the life and mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Though heart-wrenching in its depiction of the Prophet's last hours on earth, this book inspires admiration and affection for “the man who communed with Jehovah and will fill readers with anticipation for that glorious time when, in the words of the hymn, “millions shall know 'Brother Joseph' again.

<![CDATA[A Season of Joy (The Work and the Glory #5)]]> 19678872 The popular, award-winning series The Work and the Glory continues with A Season of Joy, which literally spans the globe as it follows the story of the restored Church and the fictional Steed family through two eventful years (1839-1841).

It is a season of rejuvenationas, after the horrors of the Missouri persecutions, the Saints find refuge across the Mississippi in Illinois, where they found the city of Nauvoo. Their community grows rapidly, miracles occur (including Joseph's raising of many from their sickbeds), the work of the Restoration rolls forward -- and the Steeds are there for it all. Matthew and Derek accompany members of the Twelve on the Quorum's mission to England, and there they witness a dramatic harvest of souls, including Wilford Woodruff's remarkable success. Meanwhile, the fate of Will Steed is made known, and characters from previous volumes reenter the story. In addition, since this period in Church history is not without its tensions, its trials, and its tragedies, members of the Steed family experience all of these as well. Through some of the most realistic and tender scenes of the series, readers will come to know these beloved characters even more intimately than ever before.

As with the previous volumes, personalities from Church history come to vivid life here, particularly those of the incomparable Joseph Smith and the faithful, steadfast Brigham Young.

Here, then, is another exciting, engaging installment in this acclaimed series, a story that reveals God's infinite mercy and wisdom in granting his people a season of relief, a season of hope, a season of joy.

<![CDATA[A Letter to Liberals: Censorship and COVID: An Attack on Science and American Ideals]]> 61306294 A leading Democrat challenges his party to return to liberal values and evidence-based science

Democrats were the party of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and faith in scientific and liberal empiricism. They once took pride in understanding how to read science critically, exercising healthy skepticism toward notoriously corrupt entities like the drug companies that brought us the opioid crisis, and were outraged by the phenomenon of “agency capture and the pervasive control of private interests over Congress, the media, and the scientific journals.

During the COVID pandemic, these attitudes have taken a back seat to blind faith in government mandates and countermeasures driven by pharmaceutical companies and captive federal agencies, promoted by corporate media, and cynically exploiting the fears of the American people.

A Letter to Liberals is Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s, challenge to “lockdown liberalism’s embrace of policies that are an affront to once cherished precepts.

Kennedy invites readers to look at the data in order to answer questions such
Did COVID vaccines really save millions and end the pandemic?
Why were the lowest COVID death rates in countries and states that relied on therapeutic drugs, and in countries with the lowest vaccination rates?
Did vaccines prevent infection or transmission as officials promised?
Why do COVID vaccines appear to show “negative efficacy”—making the vaccinated more susceptible to COVID.
Why does the most reliable data suggest that COVID vaccines do not lower the risk of death and hospitalization.
Should government technocrats be partnering with media and social media titans to censor and suppress the questioning of government policies?
And why have so many liberals abandoned fundamental Constitutional principles in their headlong rush to embrace pandemic policies pushed by captured bureaucrats, feckless politicians, a compromised news media, and Big Pharma?
In his November 2021 book The Real Anthony Fauci, which sold over 1,000,000 copies, Kennedy made predictions that have matured from “conspiracy theories to proven facts. Among
Masks Are Ineffective and Dangerous
Social Distancing Was Not Science-Based
School Closures Were Not Science-Based
Lockdowns Were Counterproductive
Vaccinating Children Causes More Harm and Death Than It Averts
Officials Wrongly Used PCR Tests to Justify the Countermeasures
COVID-19 May Have Come from Wuhan Lab
Natural Immunity is Superior to Vaccine Immunity
Kennedy throws down the gauntlet for the kind of vigorous scientific debate that liberals have long stood for and strives to ensure that unbiased honesty and well-researched thought is brought to bear on one of the most important and still unfolding chapters in human history.

<![CDATA[Murder in the Mews (Hercule Poirot, #16)]]> 121646
Are you ready for a question about each of the stories? How did a woman holding a pistol in her right hand manage to shoot herself in the left temple? What was the link between a ghost sighting and the disappearance of top secret military plans? How did the bullet that killed Sir Gervase shatter a mirror in another part of the room? And who destroyed the "eternal triangle" of love involving renowned beauty, Valentine Chantry?

Hercule Poirot is faced with four mystifying cases: 1. Murder in the Mews, 2. The Incredible Theft, 3. Dead Man's Mirror, and 4. Triangle at Rhodes. Each of them is a miniature classic of characterization, incident, and suspense.

<![CDATA[Thy Gold to Refine (The Work and the Glory #4)]]> 19670343 In Thy Gold to Refine, volume 4 in the series The Work and the Glory, the story of the fictional Steed family enters one of the stormiest and yet most inspiring periods in Church history.

Picking up where Volume 3 left off in the summer of 1838, this book finds the Steeds, (all but daughter Melissa and her family) happily reunited in Far West, Missouri, only to be thrown into a maelstrom of intense and tragic events: the election-day battle at Gallatin; the siege of DeWitt; the Battle of Crooked River; the issuing of Governor Bogg's extermination order; the Haun's Mill massacre; the fall of Far West; the incarceration of the Prophet Joseph Smith; and the expulsion from Missouri. Characters whom readers have come to know and love from previous volumes return here, including Joshua Steed, who, although reconciled to his family now, finds that his commission in the Missouri state militia forces him to be alighted with those opposing the Mormons.

Once again author Gerald Lund skillfully recreates dramatic scenes from Latter-day Saint history, transporting readers back in time to witness soul-stirring events and to meet unforgettable people. Readers of The Work and the Glory may well find that this new volume with its powerful account of endurance and faith refined by the fires of affliction &is the most engaging and moving installment in the series so far.

What a masterpiece! While tastefully, yet accurately retelling the awful atrocities committed in Missouri in 1838 & 39 against the Saints, this book manages to also weave in some wonderful messages of hope and faith that left me feeling like anything is ultimately conquerable.

The Spy and I (My Spy #1) 154488346 Right place. Wrong person. After a case of mistaken identity, one woman must work with her sister’s sexy spy partner to save the world in this heart-pounding romantic comedy.

The first thing to know about Dove Barkley is that, even though she works as a cyber security analyst, she is one hundred percent not an undercover CIA operative. But when a group of bad guys mistake her for her super-spy sister (news to her!), Dove gets roped into a dangerous government mission that she’d very much rather be left out of, thank you.

Too bad Mendez, the man who claims to be her sister’s partner, says she's in too deep to back out now. He’s smart, capable, and has a body almost distracting enough to make Dove forget about the team of trained assassins after her.

Dove has information that can help prevent a national tragedy, but there’s mounting evidence that Mendez might not be who he claims. More importantly, she's running out of time to save her sister. Because the last thing Dove wants is for either of them to go out with a bang.]]>

This is a fantastically researched bit of information about Charlemagne! He was a personality that could often seem bigger than he really was, though often that was because of how he was portrayed, misconstrued and misunderstood. Was he really the "All that and a bag of chips" type of leader? This book will hopefully help you to come to your mind about that. I choose to just see him as the human he was with whole lists of pros and cons. What he would have put is different from what, especially, anyone today would put in each category. Likewise, I tend to think that he wouldn't like being associated to most of the things he has been associated with since his death. Anyways, this is a good broad overview of Charlemagne's reign as emperor of his version of the Roman Empire.

<![CDATA[Truth Will Prevail (The Work and the Glory #3)]]> 20214789 Truth Will Prevail the eagerly awaited third volume in the popular series The Work and the Glory continues the gripping story of the fictional Steed family, a family acquainted with Joseph Smith and caught up in the grand events associated with the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth.

Covering the years 1836 to 1838, this volume finds the Steed involved in both remarkable and turbulent events in Church history. Nathan accompanies Parley P. Pratt on a challenging mission to Upper Canada. Jessica, Joshua's ex-wife, feels compelled to return to Missouri, where the Church seeks a new haven in an area known as Far West. Meanwhile, Joshua ever restless and ambitious, yet haunted by the misdeeds of his past travels to Savannah, Georgia, on business and there has experiences that will dramatically alter his life. Tensions between Melissa and her nonmember husband, Carl, force her to make a critical decision. A growing spirit of apostasy in Kirtland threatens the fledging Church, a spirit from which even the Steed family is not immune. In the middle of these intense days of rebellion and disaffection in Kirtland, the divine call comes to open the work in the first mission overseas England.

These and other important happenings (as well as the introduction of several new and fascinating characters) make this volume rich in drama and historical detail. As with the previous volumes in the series, readers will be intrigued by descriptions of actual, and sometimes little-known, events in Church history. And they will be moved as the author portrays the true-to-life struggles, heartaches, and joys of the Steed family, whose lives exemplify the faith expressed by many of the early Saints that God's purposes in these latter days his truth and his restored church will ultimately prevail.
