I'm always glad to find books that do not glaze over the dirt and the unfortunate happenings of the real world (even if this world is not my world). I loved this weird world though, despite all the imperfections. I liked the gnoles (especially the voices), and I liked "two sides of the same story, both wrong" - they were sad, hilarious and realistic.

Out of the series, accidentally listened to this one first. Do not regret it at all. I would've probably not liked Piper as much if I was introduced to him through Smooth men.

This is a monster of a book. I loved the complicated world of black towers, with fairytale characters distorted and reimagined in the context of this crazy game. The games logic was not always solid (and most of the time, I just accepted the explanation of "they just know something) but it was fascinating nevertheless.

I liked Charlotte the most out of all women from this series. She's more independent, somehow, where others (with the exception of Rose, I think) are still very reliant on other people's help. By contrast, Charlotte accepts help but doesn't expect it, and is determined to hold her own. AND she's scary at times.

Most of the stars are for the quality of writing. Other than that, the magnitude of consent issues, as well as fairly plain melodramatic twists damaged the story. I can understand why former had to happen and why it was important to the story, but latter are just id-writing and brought me down in the end, as they allowed to mask some of the issues introduced in the story and let them go unresolved.

I've seen the pictures but I've never read the texts before today, and wow, do they enhance the experience! My only gripe is that this book is unfinished - the author died before she could complete gathering information for it. Other than that, it is brilliant: a careful, detached review of horrifying reality of Russian peasant from late 19 - early 20 century. Easy to read but difficult to digest. I was aware of many historical happenings in China but it was difficult to understand them from the position of a common Chinese person at the time. This book provides some great dioramas to what otherwise looks like generic story of "another uprising" or something similar.
