What crisis of governmentality characterises the present world and what revisions of liberal government has it given rise to? This is the diagnostic task addressed by Foucault's study of the two major twentieth century schools of German ordo-liberalism and the neo-liberalism of the Chicago School. In the years he taught at the Collège de France, this was Michel Foucault's sole foray into the field of contemporary history. This course thus raises questions of political philosophy and social policy that are at the heart of current debates about the role and status of neo-liberalism in twentieth century politics. این جنبش يگانه که تنها سه هفته پس از پيروزى انقلاب مردم ايران سر بركشيد، گرچه در درون مرزهاى ايران در انزوا پژمرد، در بيرون از مرزها‌� ايران و در ميان زنان حق‌‌خوا� جهان گل کرد و از پشتيبانى كم‌مانند� برخوردار گشت؛ زیرا آن‌ه� بر این باور بودند که: «وقتی زنان ایرانی زنجیرهای‌شا� را پاره می‌کنند� همه‌� زنان جهان‌ان� که همراه آن‌ه� به پیش می‌رون�.»
شماری از فمینیست‌ه� به ایران شتافتند؛ از جمله کیت میلت. ره‌آور� سفر این فمینیست نامدار آمریکایی، کتاب پرارزش «به ایران رفتن» بود. فعالان گروه زنان در جنبش، فیلمی منحصر به فرد از این رویداد منحصر به فرد به زنان حق‌خوا� ایرانی هدیه دادند که بی شک ماندگار خواهد بود. کمیته‌� بین‌الملل� حق زنان که سیمون دوبووآر ریاستش را برعهده داشت نیز به همین مناسبت شکل گرفت و هیئتی را با هدف حمايت از جنبش زنان ایرانی، راهی ایران کرد.
همبستگی جهانی با زنان مبارز ايرانی، در اندك زمانى، صدها گردهم‌آيى� همايش، راه‌پيماي� و تظاهرات را در شهرهای بزرگ دنیا موجب گشت؛ از رُم، میلان، مادرید، بارسلون و بروکسل گرفته تا مونترال، ونكوور، نیویورک و واشنگتن. ده‌ه� مقاله، اطلاعیه و تراکت در حقانيت خيزش زنان ايران، در سراسر جهان چاپ و پخش شد؛ با سرخط‌هاي� همچون: «ما همه ايرانى هستيم!» ؛ یا: «پیکار زنان برای آزادی، مرز نمی‌شناس�!» این شور و شوق به جنبشی دامن زد که برای بسیاری از كنُشگران جنبش فمینیستى، نخستين نشانه‌� همبستگی بین‌الملل� زنان بود.
مهناز متین و ناصر مهاجر نشان می‌دهن� که: گرچه كنُشگران حقوق زن در گستره‌� جهان، حقانیت این جنبش را با هوشیاری و هوشمندى دریافتند و به پشتیبانی از آن برآمدند؛ اما بيشتر حزب‌ه� و سازمان‌ها� چپ، ميانه و راست و نيز بسیاری از گرایش‌ها� روشنفكرى و سياسى ـ چه در ایران و چه در جهان ـ از درکِ حقانیت و ظرفيت این جنبش ناتوان ماندند و از آن روى برتافتند. چه بسا از همین رو:

کتابیه که می‌ش� درباره محتواش ساعت‌ه� حرف زد، ولی کشش داستانی زیادی نداره و اتفاقا برخلاف نظر خیلی‌ها� به عقیده من اوایل کتاب کشش بیشتری داشت و صد صفحه آخر زیاد جالب نبود و حتی یه جاهایی لوس بود. در کل کتابی نیست که خوندنش رو به کسی توصیه کنم، ولی در عین حال به اینم فکر می‌کن� که چرا از کتابی که از نظر خیلی از منتقدین برجسته کتاب خوبیه، خوشم نیومده؟ آیا عدم همذات‌پندار� با آدمی که مثل من فکر و زندگی نمی‌کن� و جهان رو متفاوت از من می‌بینه� می‌تون� دلیل این موضوع باشه؟! اگه این باشه، زیاد خوشایند نیست. شاید یکی از رسالت‌ها� ادبیات فراخ کردن همین حس همذات‌پنداریمو� باشه و باید برای رسیدن بهش تلاش کنیم.

من هميشه منتقد تقسيم‌بندى‌ها� جنسيتى بوده‌ا�. اين تقسيم‌بندى‌ه� جلوى حق انتخاب آدم‌ه� را مى‌گيرد� آزاديشان را سلب مى‌كن� و مانع از اين مى‌شو� كه آن كسى باشند كه واقعا مى‌خواهن�. زن و مرد هم ندارد. حتى مردها هم از اين تقسيم‌بندى‌ه� متضرر مى‌شوند� مثلا آن وقت كه مجبور مى‌شون� احساساتشان را سركوب و اشك‌هايشا� را پنهان كنند. جالب اين است كه شرايط اضطرار جنگ، گاهى آنقدر همه فلسف‌ه� و عرف‌ه� را به هم مى‌ريزد� كه زن‌ه� دقيقا همان كارهايى مى‌كنن� كه تا ديروز تصور مى‌شد� ذاتا قادر به انجام آن نيستند. دردناك‌تَ� اين است كه روايت‌ها� زيادى هم از اين زن‌ه� در دست نيست، زن‌ها� تك‌تيرانداز� زن‌ها� راننده تانك، زن‌ها� سرباز، زن‌ها� بيسيم‌چى� زن‌ها� امدادگر، زن‌ها� فرمانده توپخانه يا زن‌ها� مسلسل‌چ� و راننده لوكوموتيو! اين كتاب، روايت همين زن‌هاست� زن‌هاي� كه بواسطه اضطرار جنگ دست به كارهاى عرفا مردانه مى زنند و گرامى داشته مى‌شوند� اما با تمام شدن جنگ و عادى شدن اوضاع، بخاطر جبهه رفتن و جنگيدن، بازخواست مى‌شون� و برچسب فاحشه مى‌خورن�! روايت وحشتناكى است از زنانى كه در دو ميدان نبرد جنگيدند، قبل از جنگ با دشمن و بعد از جنگ با مردمِ خودى!

«هیروکو اویامادا» یکی از چهره‌ها� نوظهور ادبیات داستانی ژاپن است. او که حالا حدوداً چهل سال دارد، متولد هیروشیما است و همان جا با همسر و دخترش زندگی می‌کن�.
در حوزه‌� نوشتن، حال و هوای آثار اویامادا را با فرانتس کافکا و ساموئل بکت مقایسه می‌کنن�. خود او می‌گوی� از کافکا و ماریو بارگاس یوسا تأثیر گرفته و علاقه‌� ویژه‌ا� به نوشته‌ها� این دو نویسنده دارد. سبک او هم درواقع ترکیبی است از فضای کافکایی، پوچگرایی بکتی، سوررئالیسم ژاپنی (که مثلاً در آثار هاروکی موراکامی دیده می‌شو�) و البته رئالیسم جادویی آمریکای لاتینی. بنابراین برای علاقه‌مندا� به این نوع از داستان‌ها� اویامادا یک صدای تازه‌� جذاب است. تا جایی که در یک دهه‌� گذشته، همه‌� جوایز معتبر ژاپن را دریافت کرده است. ازجمله جایزه‌� «شینچو» برای همین رمان «کارخان»، جایزه‌� «اودا ساکونوسوکه» برای یک مجموعه داستان و جایزه‌� «آکوتاگاوا» برای رمان «سوراخ».

1. un livre de philosophie, à classer parmi ceux que Daniel Bensaïd a régulièrement publiés (en particulier aux Éditions Fayard) : Walter Benjamin, sentinelle messianique ; Marx l’intempestif ; Le Pari mélancolique, etc. Autrement dit, s’écartant des aléas de l’action, Daniel Bensaïd fait ici retour aux fondamentaux de la philosophie politique.

2. Le dernier des livres de Daniel Bensaïd, conçu, imaginé dès 2004, peut-être rédigé depuis, mais travaillé jusqu’au bout, dans les derniers mois de sa vie. Preuve qu’il y attachait une importance particulière.

3. Le dernier de ses livres et, par le fait, malheureusement, un livre inachevé. C’est comme tel que nous le publions. De longues séquences étaient prêtes à la publication, des séquences assez longues pour constituer de véritables chapitres.

Ailleurs, il arrivait que des développements possibles, indiqués comme tels par lui, ne soient qu’évoqués (un nom, une phrase les signalent). Nous les avons conservés, assortis d’une typographie particulière.

Le titre, de même qu’un plan complet existaient dès l’origine du projet. Le titre est celui que nous reprenons. Le plan, quant à lui, indique six chapitres que les notes de Daniel Bensaïd explicitaient quelque peu (nous le donnerons dans une notice bibliographique placée en fin d’ouvrage). En définitive, nous avons bien six chapitres, reprenant pour l’essentiel les idées-forces du plan d’origine, même si, comme il est assez naturel, des déplacements y ont eu lieu et que les développements prévus ne se retrouvent pas nécessairement là où ils étaient annoncés.

Il est important de noter que, pour bensaïdien que soit ce livre (lecture scrupuleuse des textes, toujours cités dans le détail, commentaires serrés � lesquelles démontrent une fois de plus l’honnêteté intellectuelle de son auteur que sa volonté démonstrative n’entraîne jamais à tricher), c’est à un tout autre registre idéologique qu’il s’attache là : il dessine en philosophe une généalogie du désespoir révolutionnaire, au sein même de la gauche intellectuelle radicale depuis le début des années 1970.

Parmi ceux-là se trouvent certes des « adversaires », mais des adversaires qui l’intriguent quand ils ne l’attirent pas (secrète attirance dont il se défend). Comment les nommer ? Dans la conversation, celui-ci aurait dit : les "nihilistes". Mais pas n’importe lesquels ; il ne s’agit pas de faire pièce à un nihilisme cynique (caractéristique de la droite intellectuelle), seulement de contrevenir aux effets de séduction d’un nihilisme politique de principe (de gauche, donc, radical même et par définition), lequel devrait nous convaincre du caractère définitif et sans issue de la domination. Attitude logique somme toute de la part d’un homme qui n’a jamais cédé sur la nécessité du combat. Mais on l’imagine : l’auteur du Pari mélancolique n’est pas sans pouvoir se montrer sensible aussi aux sirènes d’une représentation close, hermétique.

Le pas de côté que forme Bensaïd dans ce livre, qui l’éloigne pour finir de ses travées habituelles, consiste à se poser la question de l’art. Pas pour se la poser seule, certes. Mais pour la poser avec celle de la politique. C’est-à-dire, il fait ce constat : l’art, un certain art, instruirait la politique de son impuissance essentielle (elle en aurait même eu l’intuition). Ou le prétendrait du moins. Il est parfois difficile, lisant les développements de l’auteur, de savoir si tout en lui proteste là-contre, ou si, insidieusement, il se laisse gagner par la vigueur de cette thèse. C’est l’un des charmes ambigus de ce livre

Le marxiste qu’il est avant tout prend d’abord appui sur les éléments les plus valides (aujourd’hui encore) de la marxologie : la réification, le fétichisme de la marchandise. La thèse de ce livre pourrait donc être, comme son titre l’indiquerait clairement : le « spectacle », ainsi que Debord a su le nommer, n’est jamais qu’une forme supérieure ou supplémentaire du fétichisme de la marchandise (un fétichisme qui aurait touché jusqu’� l’art). Ce qu’il soutient âprement, contre Debord justement. Et, il faut le remarquer, il n’est pas si fréquent qu’un marxiste (même trotskyste) prenne au sérieux l’� hérésie » situationniste. À tort, d’ailleurs, ce qui donne raison à Bensaïd : somme toute, le compagnonnage historique du trotskysme et du surréalisme (la déclaration Breton-Trotsky de l’entre-deux guerres) aurait dû nourrir de semblables développements plus tôt. Mais qu’est-ce à dire alors ? Que Debord se trompe (ou ment) quand il prétend soit que l’art serait ce qu’il reste de l’ancienne disposition à subvertir à laquelle il prétend ? Soit que l’art est fini en tant qu’histoire, auquel cas il est le même que la fin de l’histoire en tant que telle qui détermine la suprématie de la domination (son absence d’issue).

Daniel Bensaïd reprend les choses de loin d’abord : par La Boétie. On le comprend aussitôt : la servitude volontaire constituera l’une des clés de ce livre qui ne veut pas consentir à la servitude, encore moins à ce qu’elle puisse être volontaire (et c’est l’une des suppositions que forme en effet la pensée de la domination sans que ce livre s’emploie à démonter). Il les reprend ensuite, plus près de nous, à l’année 1968. Non pas pour les « événements » , mais parce que c’est cette année qu’a paru en France L’Homme unidimensionnel de Herbert Marcuse. Livre qui vient avec, après, avant, Critique de la vie quotidienne d’Henri Lefebvre (1961), La Société de consommation de Jean Baudrillard (1970), Les Choses de Georges Pérec (1964), La Société du spectacle de Guy Debord (1967) ou encore La Reproduction de Bourdieu et Passeron (1971).

Il y a un tremblement dans ce livre, tout du moins quelque chose qui n’y semble pas assuré (mais c’est sans doute dû à son inachèvement) : on y devine son auteur quelquefois tout près de partager cette vision, contre laquelle tout en lui, moralement, politiquement, proteste. Mais c’est ce qui lui donne un ton d’authenticité qui fait tout son prix. Outre que ce sera la dernière fois qu’il nous aura offert de le lire.

This ambitious and stimulating book describes how a moral revolution in the first centuries AD - the discovery of human freedom and its universal potential - led to a social revolution in the west. The invention of a new, equal social role, the individual, gradually displaced the claims of family, tribe and caste as the basis of social organisation. Larry Siedentop asks us to rethink the evolution of the ideas on which modern societies and government are built, and argues that the core of what is now our system of beliefs emerged much earlier than we think.

The roots of liberalism - belief in individual liberty, in the fundamental moral equality of individuals, that equality should be the basis of a legal system and that only a representative form of government is fitting for such a society - all these, Siedentop argues, were pioneered by Christian thinkers of the Middle Ages, who drew on the moral revolution carried out by the early church. It was the arguments of canon lawyers, theologians and philosophers from the eleventh to the fourteenth century, rather than the Renaissance, that laid the foundation for liberal democracy. There are large parts of the world where other beliefs flourish - fundamentalist Islam, which denies the equality of women and is often ambiguous about individual rights and representative institutions; quasi-capitalist China, where a form of utilitarianism enshrines state interests even at the expense of justice and liberty. Such beliefs may foster populist forms of democracy. But they are not liberal. In the face of these challenges, Siedentop urges that understanding the origins of our own liberal ideas is more than ever an important part of knowing who we are.

Larry Siedentop was appointed to the first post in intellectual history ever established in Britain, at Sussex University in the 1970s. From there he moved to Oxford, becoming Faculty Lecturer in Political Thought and a Fellow of Keble College. His writings include a study of Tocqueville, an edition of Guizot's History of Civilization in Europe, and Democracy in Europe, which has been translated into a dozen languages.
