Let's just say, I was right to be wary.

I'll give the book this: it was a fast read. I finished it in only a few hours. That might have had something to do with the fact that I skimmed through a majority of the romance scenes to get to the mystery/horror parts of this HORROR BOOK.

Now I could go on about the tell and not show aspects of the book. How characters were fleshed out mere pages before they were killed. How there were feats of strength that just didn't seem possible for the killer to have committed. Or how some of the action scenes were so confusingly written that it took me three tries before I was able to see how a certain character ended up dead. Or how having graphic deaths doesn't a scary book make. Or how Makani's "secret" was the stupidest thing. Or how the motive was the biggest pile of WTF, on par with something from Scary Movie.

But my biggest complaint, the one that tainted the remaining parts of the book:
WHAT SCHOOL PUTS ON SWEENY TODD AS THEIR PLAY?! AFTER STUDENTS HAD RECIEVED BROKEN BONES AS A RESULT OF LAST YEARS PLAY NO LESS! HOW IS THAT DRAMA TEACHER STILL EMPLOYED?!

Disclosure: Scream is probably my favorite scary movie. The first is a classic, the second a great follow-up and the third and fourth were fun in their own campy/nostalgic way. Hell I even stuck out the MTV series (mostly for the delightful Carlson Young but I digress). So when I see a book that is being compared to Scream I'm both intrigued and wary.

Besides, Christian wouldn’t notice someone as plain as him anyway.

What David doesn’t realize is that Christian has noticed and watches, but stays away because David works for him, and because he feels that David deserves someone better. With both men reluctant for various reasons to voice or act on their feelings, will they ever be within the same frame?

The result:


The pieces were all there but the execution was lacking. Too much tell and not enough show. Writing that was only passable. And for a book that had a main character sleep with his subjects while photographing them, the sex was kinda tame.

Don't get me wrong the story was fun. The opening was really great; it dove right into Christian and his....process and that was hot! The insight into David was nice as well. But from there it just went into stereotypical rom-com formula which I guess I was hoping to avoid.

Maybe if the story was longer. If we had a chance to really dive more into Christian and his conquests/clients.

Maybe if David tried a little harder to move on with his crush, while still showing us his insecurity. If there was no "love at first interview".

Maybe if Christian instead had his assistant stand in for a model. Then, deciding to seduce him just for the thrill of it, discovered that there was the start of an actual connection there. A connection that Christian has damaged by seemingly giving David everything he was looking for without meaning to.

In the end, there were too many ifs for this story to truly reach the mark. Though the first chapter alone does have me interested in checking out more of Grey's work. We shall see.
