Davis's dramatic narratives set the record straight, busting myths and bringing to light little-known but fascinating facts from a time when the nation's fate hung in the balance.

Spanning a period from the Spanish arrival in America to George Washington's inauguration in 1789, America's Hidden History details these episodes, among others:

The story of the first real Pilgrims in America, who were wine-making French Huguenots, not dour English Separatists
The coming-of-age story of Queen Isabella, who suggested that Columbus pack the moving mess hall of pigs that may have spread disease to many Native Americans
The long, bloody relationship between the Pilgrims and Indians that runs counter to the idyllic scene of the Thanksgiving feast
The little-known story of George Washington as a headstrong young soldier who committed a war crime, signed a confession, and started a war!
Full of color, intrigue, and human interest, America's Hidden History is an iconoclastic look at America's past, connecting some of the dots between history and today's headlines, proving why Davis is truly America's Teacher.]]>

The Chef's Apprentice 9187843
It is 1498, dawn of the Renaissance, and Venice teems with rumors about an ancient book believed to hold the secrets of power—alchemy, love, and even immortality. Some will stop at nothing to find it; others will die to protect it. As intrigue grips Her Most Serene Republic, Luciano, a light-fingered, streetwise orphan, gets caught up in the madness. The doge’s enigmatic chef takes him into the palace kitchen as an apprentice, where he is initiated into the chef’s deliciously mysterious world—itself alive with dangerous secrets. After Luciano witnesses an inexplicable murder, he embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth. What he discovers will test his loyalty, show him the dark side of men’s souls, and threaten his love for an audacious convent girl. But it will also swing open the shutters of his mind, and leave an indelible mark on his soul.

A luminous and seductive novel, The Chef ’s Apprentice is, at its heart, a high-spirited tribute to the fruits of knowledge and the extraordinary power of those who hold its key.]]>

I would have liked this book a lot better if I had grown up doing nothing but playing video games since their inception. (I did attempt Pong and PacMan and I do remember Atari.) If one is a gamer, one will love all the references to all the classic games leading up to today's hyper-realistic forms of entertainment. The author clearly extols the virtues of virtual reality. He must have spent an awful lot of time sitting in front of a screen in his youth and is nostalgic for being able to live life through an avatar rather than deal with the reality of the boring real world.

This was a particularly difficult read for me. It concerns the murder of a 14-year-old boy. (My son was murdered at 14. Unlike in my son's case where his father was the killer, the accused in this novel is another 14-year-old boy.) The story is told from the point of view of the suspect's father, a district attorney, and transcripts of Grand Jury testimony. There is considerable foreshadowing which comes almost too close to giving away the ending and lessening the shock the author strove to achieve. The premise is disturbing and it makes one think about how accountable a 14-year-old is when considering punishment. The father's devotion to his child is unshakable, as we would hope ours would be were we in his situation.

This book had me thinking about it for days after finishing reading. Not just because it struck so close to home but also because the topic was so "worrying, perturbing, troubling, upsetting; distressing, discomfiting, disconcerting, disquieting, unsettling, dismaying, alarming, frightening"* on several levels.

Death Comes to Pemberley 12875355
It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy’s magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.

Then, on the eve of the ball, the patrician idyll is shattered. A coach careens up the drive carrying Lydia, Elizabeth’s disgraced sister, who with her husband, the very dubious Wickham, has been banned from Pemberley. She stumbles out of the carriage, hysterical, shrieking that Wickham has been murdered. With shocking suddenness, Pemberley is plunged into a frightening mystery.

Inspired by a lifelong passion for Austen, P. D. James masterfully re-creates the world of Pride and Prejudice, electrifying it with the excitement and suspense of a brilliantly crafted crime story, as only she can write it.]]>

P.D. James has done a masterful job of capturing the literary style of the 1800's. She has taken "Pride and Prejudice" and written a continuation of the story using all the characters of the earlier work. When I say she has succeeded in writing in the manner of Jane Austen it's not necessarily a total compliment as any high school student will tell you. The posturing of that era is tedious to say the least. The novel perfectly reflects the era's sense of decorum, the role of women in all of the social statuses, and the eloquence of speaking much and saying little. Considering P.D. James is in her nineties, I admire her fortitude in tackling an endeavor of this magnitude.

(I'm attempting the Austen era's stylistic affectation of expression to which the novel pays homage in hopes I can convey James' intent to demonstrate her prowess without too much pride or prejudice.)

<![CDATA[Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness]]> 10338691 Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller returns to Africa and the story of her unforgettable family.

In Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, Alexandra Fuller braids a multilayered narrative around the perfectly lit, Happy Valley-era Africa of her mother's childhood; the boiled cabbage grimness of her father's English childhood; and the darker, civil war-torn Africa of her own childhood. At its heart, this is the story of Fuller's mother, Nicola. Born on the Scottish Isle of Skye and raised in Kenya, Nicola holds dear the kinds of values most likely to get you hurt or killed in Africa: loyalty to blood, passion for land, and a holy belief in the restorative power of all animals. Fuller interviewed her mother at length and has captured her inimitable voice with remarkable precision. Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness is as funny, terrifying, exotic, and unselfconscious as Nicola herself.

We see Nicola and Tim Fuller in their lavender-colored honeymoon period, when East Africa lies before them with all the promise of its liquid equatorial light, even as the British Empire in which they both believe wanes. But in short order, an accumulation of mishaps and tragedies bump up against history until the couple finds themselves in a world they hardly recognize. We follow the Fullers as they hopscotch the continent, running from war and unspeakable heartbreak, from Kenya to Rhodesia to Zambia, even returning to England briefly. But just when it seems that Nicola has been broken entirely by Africa, it is the African earth itself that revives her.

A story of survival and madness, love and war, loyalty and forgiveness, Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness is an intimate exploration of the author's family. In the end, we find Nicola and Tim at a coffee table under their Tree of Forgetfulness on the banana and fish farm where they plan to spend their final days. In local custom, the Tree of Forgetfulness is where villagers meet to resolve disputes and it is here that the Fullers at last find an African kind of peace. Following the ghosts and dreams of memory, Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness is Alexandra Fuller at her very best.]]>

This is the follow up to "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," 2001, and like it, is about Ms. Fuller's family, primarily her mother. "Cocktail Hour..," 2011, is a perfect example of a mother and adult daughter trying to come to terms with one another. No surprise, Ms. Fuller's mother was not entirely happy with the way she was portrayed in "the awful [first] book." Who could blame her? It wasn't exactly a rousing endorsement of her mothering. She was often so wrapped up in her own mental illness that she had little left for her children. This follow up shows that both women, with time and space between, are able to forgive one another. Nicola Fuller had a difficult life but she's definitely a survivor. Under terrible pressures, she managed to overcome the obstacles of war, death, and loss of sanity, with humor and humility. Nicola and Alexandra have come to value one another and have a loving, respectful relationship. Maybe because so much has happened since the events of "Don't Let's Go...," marriage and children of her own, Alexandra can now genuinely appreciate her mother. She certainly captures much more of her mother's sense of humor this time around. It's amazing, as we get older, how much smarter our parents seem to get.

There are so many memoirs written by African born whites, most often young girls. All of them have been excellent. It is such a different way of life. The countries of their birth don't want them and yet they can't leave, emotionally if not physically. It is a tough life. Virtually all having been raised on farms and nearly all displaced by political turmoil. What I find truly amazing is how well all of the authors write about their experiences.

I was particularly struck by the following scene from this book:
"Once I discovered the skulls of two impala rams, their horns locked into an irreversible figure-of-eight; the two animals had been trapped in combat, latched to each other during the battle of the rut. The harder they had pulled to escape from each other, the more intractably stuck they were, until they had fallen exhausted, to their knees, in an embrace of hatred that killed them both."

I was in Maryland when I read this. I thought I was going to be going to Gettysburg and wanted to know more before I went. (As it turned out, I never made it.) As historical fiction, this is a good introduction for learning about the Civil War... not as dry and pedantic as a textbook. Even though there were lots of simple drawn maps, they weren't enough for me. I would have liked photos of the terrain to help me picture the scenes. The story is told mostly from the point of a few of the participants on each side. This helped the characters feel more human. Of course, there's always the problem of writing dialog and creating what real people might be thinking. I still find it incredible that spectators used to go watch the fighting. How much more "civilized" than today's warfare. It also still amazes me that family members on opposite sides fought one another to the death. I can't imagine going to war against my brother. The ultimate tragedy. It's amazing that the country survived.

Because I hung out with many SEALS during the Viet Nam War, (some of whom did not return), I was interested in this novel about their training written by a former SEAL. The guys had told me some of what they endured but this made me appreciate what they went through even more. With that said, the embellishments of a suspected murder and pursuit of the perpetrator was totally unnecessary and distracting. I'm not sure why the author felt he needed it. I think this would have been better as a memoir rather than fiction. Of course, so many claim to have been SEALs who weren't, maybe David Reid feared being put in that category if he attempted nonfiction.

I just love the imaginative details found in the Harry Potter books. It would be difficult enough to make up a plot, characters, etc., with as many innovative circumstances for one book, much less seven books! Yet J.K. Rowling does it repeatedly. Are all the books perfect? Of course not. But who cares? They are entertaining and have appeal for all ages. This book came out after my son's death eight years ago and I've just gotten to the point where I could face reading it. We'd read the previous adventures of Harry and friends together. I found myself sobbing when Harry faced his own mortality at age 17. I couldn't help thinking of Evan at 14. It was exceedingly painful but I don't regret it.

The queen who inspired men to love her with bewitching devotion, no matter what the cost, but the depth of her love for England required a sacrifice that would haunt her to the grave.

"Full of dramatic twists and turns, not to mention a scintillating central character and colorful supporting cast. Readers will lose themselves for hours in this richly entertaining novel." —Booklist]]>

This story deals with the murder of a fourteen-year-old child. I wasn't sure I wanted to read this as my son was murdered at fourteen. A coincidence? I decided to overcome my initial revulsion and see if there was anything positive I could get from the self torture I knew I would endure.

The Help 4667024
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women, mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends, view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

I loved this book. I had a "black mammy" as a child. I caller her "Der-Der" because I couldn't say Gertrude, and I adored her. We lived in 1949 Charleston, SC, and I can readily relate to the time when "The Help" is set... even though, it is set in the late 50's and early 60's. The attitudes were the same. Everything was still segregated. The author has done a wonderful job of capturing both the black and white thinking and behavior. Too bad this book didn't actually come out in the time it depicted. It might have helped.

For him, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence it’s about negotiation and manipulation. Sometimes it’s even about justice.

A Beverly Hills playboy arrested for attacking a woman he picked up in a bar chooses Haller to defend him, and Mickey has his first high-paying client in years. It is a defense attorney’s dream, what they call a franchise case. And, as the evidence stacks up, Haller comes to believe this may be the easiest case of his career.

Then someone close to him is murdered and Haller discovers that his search for innocence has brought him face-to-face with evil as pure as a flame. To escape without being burned, he must deploy every tactic, feint, and instinct in his arsenal this time to save his own life.]]>

I really liked this. The lawyer of the title, Mickey Haller, is just cynical enough to be believable. I also liked the insider knowledge of lawyer strategy that he imparts. It sounds very plausible. Although Haller's tactics come very close to causing disbarment, he does this presumably in the name of justice. Of course, the money doesn't hurt.

Sons and Lovers 32071 "She was a brazen hussy."

"I didn't look ... And tell your girls, my son, that when they're running after you, they're not to come and ask your mother for you - tell them that - brazen baggages you meet at dancing classes"

The marriage of Gertrude and Walter Morel has become a battleground. Repelled by her uneducated and sometimes violent husband, delicate Gertrude devotes her life to her children, especially to her sons, William and Paul - determined they will not follow their father into working down the coal mines. But conflict is evitable when Paul seeks to escape his mother's suffocating grasp through relationships with women his own age. Set in Lawrence's native Nottinghamshire, Sons and Lovers is a highly autobiographical and compelling portrayal of childhood, adolescence and the clash of generations.]]>

What a big disappointment. I read this while on Safari in Africa. Maybe I should have picked The Snows of Kilimanjaro. At least it would have had locale to hold my interest. While this is more of a character study, I never warmed to any of the characters. There is virtually no plot and the ending just ends. I slogged through even though I was tempted to quit MANY times. I got tired of boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets another girl, boy loses other girl, boy goes back to first girl, boy and girl never get together. I was frustrated to the point of quitting just as repetitively.

This was my first Lord Peter Whimsey book. Due to it's being very British and dated, I'm not sure I'll read another. Not that I don't like the "classic" mysteries of old, which have their charm, it's just that they are so tame by today's standards. They are fluff pieces in comparison. I love watching the British adaptations on PBS more than I like reading them.

<![CDATA[The Mysterious Affair at Styles]]> 8431867 The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a detective novel by Agatha Christie. It was written in 1916 and was first published by John Lane in the US in October 1920 and in the UK by The Bodley Head (John Lane's UK company) on February 1 1921. The US edition retailed at $2.00 and the UK edition at seven shillings and sixpence (7/6).

It is Christie's first published novel, and introduces Hercule Poirot, Chief Inspector Japp and Captain Hastings. The story is told in first person by Hastings, and features many of the elements that, thanks to Christie, have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. It is set in a large, isolated country manor; there are a half-dozen suspects, most of whom are hiding facts about themselves; the book includes maps of the house, the murder scene and a drawing of a fragment of a will; and there are a number of red herrings and surprise plot twists.

All of these gals: Idina, Beryl, Karen, were totally unconventional by European standards yet they managed to take their European culture/lifestyle with them. Despite rustic conditions they had their tea, drank before dinner cocktails, and maintained a lifestyle befitting their upbringing. All behaved scandalously and I wish I had half their guts.

And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

There were parts I liked and parts I didn't. The pace seemed uneven: fast at times and really slow at others. I have never read the Wizard of Oz, only seen the movie. I've also seen the play Wicked. This book had NOTHING to do with either, other than using some of the names and hints of the characters. There is no resemblance to the film's Land of Oz. This is a MUCH darker place. I was put off by all the discussion of religion. It seemed an intrusion. I suppose the characters were shaped by their beliefs, which was important, but the harangues became tedious. None of the characters were particularly likable. I started out feeling sorry for Elphaba but tired of her feeling sorry for herself. By the end, she was quite unlikable.

The Lacuna 6433752 The Lacuna is a poignant story of a man pulled between two nations as they invent their modern identities.

Born in the United States, reared in a series of provisional households in Mexico—from a coastal island jungle to 1930s Mexico City—Harrison Shepherd finds precarious shelter but no sense of home on his thrilling odyssey. Life is whatever he learns from housekeepers who put him to work in the kitchen, errands he runs in the streets, and one fateful day, by mixing plaster for famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. He discovers a passion for Aztec history and meets the exotic, imperious artist Frida Kahlo, who will become his lifelong friend. When he goes to work for Lev Trotsky, an exiled political leader fighting for his life, Shepherd inadvertently casts his lot with art and revolution, newspaper headlines and howling gossip, and a risk of terrible violence.

Meanwhile, to the north, the United States will soon be caught up in the internationalist goodwill of World War II. There in the land of his birth, Shepherd believes he might remake himself in America's hopeful image and claim a voice of his own. He finds support from an unlikely kindred soul, his stenographer, Mrs. Brown, who will be far more valuable to her employer than he could ever know. Through darkening years, political winds continue to toss him between north and south in a plot that turns many times on the unspeakable breach—the lacuna—between truth and public presumption.

With deeply compelling characters, a vivid sense of place, and a clear grasp of how history and public opinion can shape a life, Barbara Kingsolver has created an unforgettable portrait of the artist—and of art itself. The Lacuna is a rich and daring work of literature, establishing its author as one of the most provocative and important of her time.]]>

<![CDATA[The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren]]> 3359595
Jonathan Lopez has done what no other writer could--tracking down primary sources in four countries and five languages to tell for the first time the real story of the world's most famous forger. Neither unappreciated artist nor antifascist hero, Van Meegeren emerges in The Man Who Made Vermeers as an ingenious, dyed-in-the-wool crook--a talented Mr. Ripley armed with a paintbrush, who worked virtually his entire adult life making and selling fake Old Masters. Drawing upon extensive interviews with descendents of Van Meegeren's partners in crime, Lopez also explores the networks of illicit commerce that operated across Europe between the wars. Not only was Van Meegeren a key player in that high-stakes game during the 1920s, landing fakes with powerful dealers and famous collectors such as Andrew Mellon (including two pseudo-Vermeers that Mellon donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.), but the forger and his associates later offered a case study in wartime opportunism as they cashed in on the Nazi occupation.

The Man Who Made Vermeers is a long-overdue unvarnishing of Van Meegeren's legend and a deliciously detailed story of deceit in the art world.]]>

The Red House Mystery 1333202
In it, Milne takes readers to the Red House, a comfortable residence in the placid English countryside that is the bachelor home of Mr. Mark Ablett. While visiting this cozy retreat, amateur detective Anthony Gillingham and his chum, Bill Beverley, investigate their genial host's disappearance and its connection with a mysterious shooting. Was the victim, whose body was found after a heated exchange with the host, shot in an act of self-defense? If so, why did the host flee, and if not, what drove him to murder?

Between games of billiards and bowls, the taking of tea, and other genteel pursuits, Gillingham and Beverley explore the possibilities in a light-hearted series of capers involving secret passageways, underwater evidence, and other atmospheric devices.

The Enchantress of Florence 1317696 The Enchantress of Florence is the story of a woman attempting to command her own destiny in a man's world. It brings together two cities that barely know each other - the hedonistic Mughal capital, in which the brilliant emperor wrestles daily with questions of belief, desire and the treachery of sons, and the equally sensual Florentine world of powerful courtesans, humanist philosophy and inhuman torture, where Argalia's boyhood friend "il Machia" - Niccolo' Machiavelli - is learning, the hard way, about the true brutality of power. These two worlds, so far apart, turn out to be uncannily alike, and the enchantments of women hold sway over them both. But is Mogor's story true? And if so, then what happened to the lost princess? <![CDATA[The Boleyn Inheritance (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, #10)]]> 16180 Three Women Who Share One Fate: The Boleyn Inheritance

Anne of Cleves
She runs from her tiny country, her hateful mother, and her abusive brother to a throne whose last three occupants are dead. King Henry VIII, her new husband, instantly dislikes her. Without friends, family, or even an understanding of the language being spoken around her, she must literally save her neck in a court ruled by a deadly game of politics and the terror of an unpredictable and vengeful king. Her Boleyn Inheritance: accusations and false witnesses.

Katherine Howard
She catches the king's eye within moments of arriving at court, setting in motion the dreadful machine of politics, intrigue, and treason that she does not understand. She only knows that she is beautiful, that men desire her, that she is young and in love -- but not with the diseased old man who made her queen, beds her night after night, and killed her cousin Anne. Her Boleyn Inheritance: the threat of the axe.

Jane Rochford
She is the Boleyn girl whose testimony sent her husband and sister-in-law to their deaths. She is the trusted friend of two threatened queens, the perfectly loyal spy for her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk, and a canny survivor in the murderous court of a most dangerous king. Throughout Europe, her name is a byword for malice, jealousy, and twisted lust. Her Boleyn Inheritance: a fortune and a title, in exchange for her soul.

The Boleyn Inheritance is a novel drawn tight as a lute string about a court ruled by the gallows and three women whose positions brought them wealth, admiration, and power as well as deceit, betrayal, and terror. Once again, Philippa Gregory has brought a vanished world to life - the whisper of a silk skirt on a stone stair, the yellow glow of candlelight illuminating a hastily written note, the murmurs of the crowd gathering on Tower Green below the newly built scaffold. In The Boleyn Inheritance Gregory is at her intelligent and page-turning best.]]>

<![CDATA[T is for Trespass (Kinsey Millhone, #20)]]> 410445 trespass \'trespes\ n: a transgression of law involving one's obligations to God or to one's neighbor; a violation of moral law; an offense; a sin
-Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition, Unabridged

In what may be her most unsettling novel to date, Sue Grafton's T is for Trespass is also her most direct confrontation with the forces of evil. Beginning slowly with the day-to-day life of a private eye, Grafton suddenly shifts from the voice of Kinsey Millhone to that of Solana Rojas, introducing readers to a chilling sociopath. Rojas is not her birth name. It is an identity she cunningly stole, an identity that gives her access to private caregiving jobs. The true horror of the novel builds with excruciating tension as the reader foresees the awfulness that lies ahead. The suspense lies in whether Millhone will realize what is happening in time to intervene. Though set in the late eighties, T is for Trespass could not be more topical: identity theft; elder abuse; betrayal of trust; the breakdown in the institutions charged with caring for the weak and the dependent. It reveals a terrifying but all-too-real rip in the social fabric. Once again, Grafton opens up new territory with startling results.]]>

I might have liked this book more had I read it before "Behold, Here's Poison." This is another British drawing room murder mystery. Unfortunately, I figured out who did it much too early. The characters came across as shallow and self-absorbed. Their catty remarks to one another lacked cleverness. The female love interest is such a twit you wonder what anyone could possibly see in her. Like the other novel: there are two family members murdered, there is a helpful cousin who plays at being a sleuth, and there is a marriage proposal at the end which comes as no surprise because it's just like the one in the previously read book. I should have just stopped after the first.

I took a lot of art history classes in college so I'm going to be pretty much interested in any book about art or artists. I have seen artists sit in front of famous works in museums and attempt to copy them. I was always under the impression that any copy done in this manner had to be a different size from the original. Supposedly, this would prevent fakes from being created. Obviously, not so. The subject of this book didn't copy masterpieces, he created entirely new ones, which I would think might even be harder. The book goes into quite a bit of detail about how forgers hone their craft and the extent they go to in order to fool "the experts." The author does a rather nice job of showing the pomposity of art critics. Since I have always thought that there was a lot of B.S. in the art community, I was delighted to read about their fallibility. The painting that is the main subject of the book, "Christ at Emmaus," doesn't look anything like a Vermeer to me. I find it hard to believe anyone ever thought that it did. But, of course, I am not an "expert." Han Van Meegeren, the forger, seems to have the same opinion. I can imagine his glee at putting one over on the self-important critics. Of course, the fact that he was paid millions for "his" work didn't hurt.

This murder mystery could not have come from anyone but a British author. It is SO typical of the genre: the manor house, the servants, the dysfunctional family. It's all there. The story revolves around the Matthews family, each more detestable than the next. There really aren't any likable characters with the exception of the police Superintendent who doesn't figure all that much in the plot. This is definitely not a police procedural and the detective is only a minor player in the action. As for action, there is almost none. This book depends on the snappy repartee of the family members who all despise one another, and it that, this novel excels. The perfect quip reigns supreme. If you like great dialogue, you'll enjoy the caustic conversations. As I was reading, I could totally visualize this book as a play, like The Mouse Trap. Only the English can do the drawing room drama this effectively.

Luncheon of the Boating Party 98049 Bestselling author Susan Vreeland returns with a vivid exploration of one of the most beloved Renoir paintings in the world

Instantly recognizable, Auguste Renoir's masterpiece depicts a gathering of his real friends enjoying a summer Sunday on a café terrace along the Seine near Paris. A wealthy painter, an art collector, an Italian journalist, a war hero, a celebrated actress, and Renoir's future wife, among others, share this moment of la vie moderne, a time when social constraints were loosening and Paris was healing after the Franco-Prussian War. Parisians were bursting with a desire for pleasure and a yearning to create something extraordinary out of life. Renoir shared these urges and took on this most challenging project at a time of personal crises in art and love, all the while facing issues of loyalty and the diverging styles that were tearing apart the Impressionist group. Narrated by Renoir and seven of the models and using settings in Paris and on the Seine, Vreeland illuminates the gusto, hedonism, and art of the era. With a gorgeous palette of vibrant, captivating characters, she paints their lives, loves, losses, and triumphs in a brilliant portrait of her own.]]>

I must admit to loving novels that deal with famous works of art so I tend to be generous with my ratings when it comes to them. I would not be able to say that I know a whole lot more about Renoir as a result of reading this book. It is not a biography. What it is is a story constructed around the characters who appear in the painting. The book does a good job of giving a feeling for the time and place in which it is set. It's also good at creating stories around the people who inhabit the painting. However, no one is portrayed in a great deal of depth. Perhaps we have a better understanding of Alphonsine than of any of the others. She seems to be the most well developed character. I, personally, could have used a few illustrations to clarify which character is which in the painting, As it is, I had to print a copy of it and try to fill in names as I read. I suppose that's okay but it was distracting from the narrative. Additionally, many works of art are referenced which the author seems to think all readers would be familiar with. I realize this was not an art history text and that including reproductions costs money, but I think the publishers could have helped readers enjoy the book more by including the works discussed.

This little book is bizarre, to say the least. The author is a surrealist painter and it sure shows in her writing. She tells the story from the first person point of view of 92-year-old Marian Leatherby. Since Marian is deaf, the title refers to a gift given by a friend. Marian's family don't want her around so they put her in an institution which turns out to be another world unto itself. It is a place of dried up old women who believe in magic and spirits while the operators of the establishment encourage Self Remembering. We know that it is no ordinary place when Marian describes the living quarters. Within its high walls, "the main building was in fact a castle, surrounded by various pavilions with incongruous shapes. Pixielike dwellings shaped like toadstools, Swiss chalets, railway carriages, one or two ordinary bungalows, something shaped like a boot, another like what I took to be an outsize mummy." Marian is assigned to a lighthouse shaped tower with walls painted with furniture that wasn't there. This strange setting foreshadows the events to follow. This book reads like a surrealist painting looks. It is really rather enchanting. As is Marian, a wry observer of life's and people's foibles. She's a woman I think I would like to meet.

Eat, Pray, Love 19501
Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned thirty, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want—a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be.

To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world—all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly medicine man and also fell in love the best way—unexpectedly.

An intensely articulate and moving memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment and stop trying to live in imitation of society’s ideals. It is certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change.]]>

I didn't respond to this book the way so many others seem to have. I found the author incredibly self-absorbed. For all her searching for meaning in her life, she couldn't stop making herself the center of her universe. Yes, I know this book was supposed to reaffirm self-actualization, but I found her whining tedious. She was so preoccupied with herself. Call me cynical, but I am not convinced she was any better a person after her year of self-indulgence. If you've read the book you'll understand when I say, I found her to be "a bullshitter."

<![CDATA[The Last Resort: A Memoir of Zimbabwe]]> 6449208 The Last Resort is a remarkable true story about one family in a country under siege and a testament to the love, perseverance, and resilience of the human spirit.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Douglas Rogers is the son of white farmers living through that country’s long and tense transition from postcolonial rule. He escaped the dull future mapped out for him by his parents for one of adventure and excitement in Europe and the United States. But when Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe launched his violent program to reclaim white-owned land and Rogers’s parents were caught in the cross fire, everything changed. Lyn and Ros, the owners of Drifters–a famous game farm and backpacker lodge in the eastern mountains that was one of the most popular budget resorts in the country–found their home and resort under siege, their friends and neighbors expelled, and their lives in danger. But instead of leaving, as their son pleads with them to do, they haul out a shotgun and decide to stay.

On returning to the country of his birth, Rogers finds his once orderly and progressive home transformed into something resembling a Marx Brothers romp crossed with Heart of Darkness: pot has supplanted maize in the fields; hookers have replaced college kids as guests; and soldiers, spies, and teenage diamond dealers guzzle beer at the bar.

And yet, in spite of it all, Rogers’s parents–with the help of friends, farmworkers, lodge guests, and residents–among them black political dissidents and white refugee farmers–continue to hold on. But can they survive to the end?

In the midst of a nation stuck between its stubborn past and an impatient future, Rogers soon begins to see his parents in a new light: unbowed, with passions and purpose renewed, even heroic. And, in the process, he learns that the "big story" he had relentlessly pursued his entire adult life as a roving journalist and travel writer was actually happening in his own backyard.]]>

Once again I am amazed by the resiliency of Zimbabweans. What amazing people. Horrors abound yet they maintain a sense of calm and find humor in the most unlikely situations. This is the story of the author's parents who run a resort in Zimbabwe. They certainly typify the British heritage of having "a stiff upper lip" while also having the dry humor associated with Brits. White Zimbabweans had to deal with being unwanted, terrorized, and dispossessed. Maintaining the ability to be bemused by one's situation seems to be a hallmark of these people. What started out as a bar, restaurant, and sleeping cabins for hikers turned into the area's most popular brothel. The Rogers' could easily have been removed from their property but, due to their dealings with some very interesting Black Africans, they endured. How this came about is told by a son incredulous of his parents' ability to stay and survive.

I really enjoyed this book. It's not earth-shaking or particularly inspiring but it was entertaining. I especially enjoyed Jacob's, the narrator, wit when dealing with caregivers in an old folks' home. The author also does a nice job of making the reader feel some of the frustration of being old and treated like a child. Makes you wonder how much more is going on in the heads of patients relegated to death chamber/assisted living facilities. (What a euphemism!)

The Botticelli Secret 6734336
When part-time model and full-time prostitute Luciana Vetra is asked by one of her most exalted clients to pose for a painter friend, she doesn't mind serving as the model for the central figure of Flora in Sandro Botticelli's masterpiece "Primavera." But when the artist dismisses her without payment, Luciana impulsively steals an unfinished version of the painting--only to find that somone is ready to kill her to get it back.

What could possibly be so valuable about the picture? As friends and clients are slaughtered around her, Luciana turns to the one man who has never desired her beauty, novice librarian Brother Guido. Fleeing Venice together, Luciana and Guido race through the nine cities of Renaissance Italy, pursued by ruthless foes who are determined to keep them from decoding the painting's secrets.

Gloriously fresh and vivid, with a deliciously irreverent heroine, The Botticelli Secret is an irresistible blend of history, wit, and suspense.]]>

Beach Music 16729
A Southerner living abroad, Jack McCall is scarred by tragedy and betrayal. His desperate desire to find peace after his wife’s suicide draws him into a painful, intimate search for the one haunting secret in his family’s past that can heal his anguished heart. Spanning three generations and two continents, from the contemporary ruins of the American South to the ancient ruins of Rome, from the unutterable horrors of the Holocaust to the lingering trauma of Vietnam, Beach Music sings with life’s pain and glory. It is a novel of lyric intensity and searing truth, another masterpiece among Pat Conroy’s legendary and beloved novels.]]>

The story begins with the narrator's wife committing suicide. He moves to Rome to raise his daughter. When his mother becomes ill he, Jack McCall, reluctantly returns to his South Carolina family home to be reunited with his less than Beaver Cleaver parents and his colorful array of brothers.

During the course of his visit we are introduced to a number of Jack's acquaintances, some of whom are quite sympathetic and others who make you wonder why he was ever friends with them. We also learn about the histories of his mother and his in-laws. Their lives are the most poignant and make Jack's complaints seem minor in comparison.

There are some touching passages describing attempts to save sea turtles and I've always enjoyed Conroy's ability to write sarcastic dialogue... although his characters can be too witty and hurtful for reasonable people to be willing to put up with.

I have read several of Pat Conroy's books: "The Water is Wide," "The Great Santini," "The Lords of Discipline." If there's one common thread it's wife/child beating husbands/fathers. Since the author readily admits his father was physically abusive this should come as no surprise! "Beach Music" has the obligatory abuser. As in some of the other books, it is the father of the narrator. (I wouldn't want to be Pat Conroy's father!)

“Treat yourself to this book, please - I can’t recommend it highly enough. (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love)

“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.

January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island - boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

Praise for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society

“A jewel... Poignant and keenly observed, Guernsey is a small masterpiece about love, war, and the immeasurable sustenance to be found in good books and good friends. (People)

“A book-lover’s delight, an implicit and sometimes explicit paean to all things literary. (Chicago Sun-Times)

“A sparkling epistolary novel radiating wit, lightly worn erudition and written with great assurance and aplomb. (The Sunday Times [London])

“Cooked perfectly à point: subtle and elegant in flavour, yet emotionally satisfying to the finish. (The Times [London])]]>

The entire book is a series of letters between characters right after the end of WWII. It takes place in London and the island of Guernsey. I was unaware that part of England had been occupied by the Germans and how close they got to the mainland. There were several other interesting facts I had been unaware of heretofore.

The characters are so wonderfully British: all odd eccentricities and sense of humor. You want to get to know these people as much as the main character, Juliet, does. I found myself wanting to fly off to Guernsey and find everyone who wrote to Juliet.

The way the story unfolds is fairly predictable but you don't care because you're having so much fun. It ends exactly as you think it will but you aren't disappointed by it's lack of a surprise.
My niece gave me this book after she'd read it and I'll have to thank her for passing it along.]]>

As murder mysteries go, this one was only fair. I got it thinking it would be interesting because of the TV show "Rizzoli & Isles." Turns out Isles isn't in the book at all and Rizzoli is more of a peripheral character. We learn who the killer is before the end and I ended up not much caring. <![CDATA[J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys: The Real Story Behind Peter Pan]]> 39283
“For an insightful exploration of Barrie and the boys who inspired him, nothing rivals [this book].”—Norman Allen, Smithsonian Magazine

J. M. Barrie, Victorian novelist, playwright, and author of Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up , led a life almost as magical and interesting as as his famous creation. Childless in his marriage, Barrie grew close to the five young boys of the Llewelyn Davies family, ultimately becoming their guardian and devoted surrogate father when they were orphaned. Andrew Birkin draws extensively on a vast range of material by and about Barrie, including notebooks, memoirs, and hours of recorded interviews with the family and their circle, to describe Barrie’s life and the wonderful world he created for the boys.

Originally published in 1979, this enchanting and richly illustrated account is reissued with a new preface to mark the release of Neverland, the film of Barrie’s life, and the upcoming centenary of Peter Pan.

“A psychological thriller . . . one of the year’s most complex and absorbing biographies.”—Gerald Clarke, Time

“A terrible and fascinating story.”—Eve Auchincloss, Washington Post]]>

Like Jackson, Barrie insinuated himself into the lives of families through their children. He and his wife were childless so he attached himself to other people's children. In the case of Barrie, it was the Llewelyen-Davies family of five sons. His particular fondness for two of the boys, George and Michael, was apparent, to everyone. "Uncle Jim" based many of his characters on the Davies boys, as well as on himself and others close to him. His unflattering, and obvious, autobiographical depictions of situations and persons were deemed in questionable taste by some critics and those portrayed.

This book makes clear that J.M. Barrie, for all his success, did not have a particularly happy life. Tragic circumstances abounded and he was already prone to depression. Although Barrie tried his best to buy happiness, money was no guarantee. ]]>

While reading this biography, I couldn't help noticing similarities between J.M. Barrie and Michael Jackson. Both men were considered very child-like. Both were more comfortable with children than with adults. Both were unusual looking by "normal" standards. (Barrie was barely 5'3".) Both were very rich and famous. (Barrie was the top playwright of his era; "Peter Pan" being his best know work.) Both men were suspected of being pedophiles. J.M. Barrie's life was filled with more tragedy than Jackson's and he lived longer but their situations are hard to ignore.

This novel tells the stories of the women in Frank Lloyd Wright's life. For some bizarre reason the author has chosen to create and tell part of the story from the point of view of a young Japanese apprentice of Wright's. This character seems superfluous. Then the story is told partly by the women themselves. The author has chosen not to tell the stories of the women chronologically. No idea why. Having already read "Loving Frank," I was familiar with the story of mistress Mamah Borthwick Cheney. The stories of the three women Frank actually married, Catherine, Miriam, and Olgivanna, were unknown to me prior to reading this novel. Unfortunately, I didn't feel I knew that much more about them after I'd finished reading. When I did some research on the web, I found that there were aspects of the personalities of all the women which weren't mentioned in either book. I also am not satisfied that I know very much about Frank himself. I've decided to read his autobiography and see if that helps.

Miss Hargreaves 7430121
The sexton does not doubt her existence. For him, Miss Hargreaves is as real as you or I. And she gradually assumes a fully-rounded character in the imaginings of the two young men as they while away their holiday in expanding the details of her life: her book of poetry, her parrot Dr Pepusch, her harp, and her hip-bath. It is merely a continuation of their little joke when they write to invite her to visit them back in their cathedral home-town of Cornford.

It is something of a surprise when Miss Hargreaves accepts their invitation. And their disbelief turns to confusion and horror as, one evening soon afterwards, her train pulls into Cornford Station . . .

As Dr Glen Cavaliero stresses in his introduction, Miss Hargreaves is a brilliantly funny and moving fantasy with an admirable lightness of touch and wonderful characterisation, but for all that it has a dark and frightening undercurrent. A burlesque parable of 'the ways of God with man', the book explores how the creator must live with the consequences of their creation, no matter how uncomfortable. And if they renounce their responsibilities, then there is always the possibility that their power may be turned against them.

Miss Hargreaves, first published in 1940 to great acclaim, is a classic novel of the supernatural. Glen Cavaliero is a Fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and author of The Supernatural and English Fiction (O.U.P., 1995).]]>

This is a typical British "whimsy" from 1940. It has the charm of a Miss Marple in that it takes place in a small English village where the townspeople have idiosyncrasies that only the English seem to be so capable of creating. The narrator, Norman, has a vivid imagination. Perhaps too vivid for his own good. He "creates" Miss Hargreaves as a lark, only to have her turn up possessing all the attributes he fabricated for her. When she takes on a threatening tone, he wonders what he has wrought. Having knowledge of the workings of an Anglican cathedral and it's organ/music would be very helpful.

This novel was written by the same author as "Slumdog Millionaire," and like it, the characters intermingle in Dickensian fashion. One would not think that people of different castes would have much opportunity to come in contact with one another, even in modern-day India, much as they do in Dickens' Victorian England, which was equally class-conscious. But, here they do, as well. Also, as in his previous novel, the author sets up unlikely scenarios which seemingly have nothing to do with one another, and yet, all the elements are intertwined. Here, rather than a game show being the impetus, it is the murder of a young man from a prominent family. The title, obviously, refers to the six individuals suspected of committing the murder.

This is the memoir of the last foreign journalist to be expelled from Zimbabwe. Andrew moved to Zimbabwe in 1980 because he wanted to observe the birth of democracy in an African nation. He starts out idealistic and falls in love with the country. He marries and stays for 20 years. He would have remained for the rest of his life if he had been able to ignore and not report on the injustices he witnessed. This book reveals the horrible extent of the ruination of all of the democratic principles that he so optimistically hoped for. And yet, he still hopes to return to Zimbabwe some day... hence the title.

Since I am trying to learn all I can before returning to Zimbabwe, I chose this as one of my titles. I was surprised to learn that the severity of the racial discord in Zimbabwe continued until so recently, 2005. I was there in 2009 and quite ignorant as to the country's history. I knew about the killings of white farmers during the 80's fight for liberation but had not realized it was still going on. This book tells the stories of Aqui, a black African woman, and Nigel Hough and family, a white farmer. Life has not been easy for either of them. Aqui grew up highly intelligent at a time when there were no opportunities for her. Nigel found salvation in Zimbabwe and then damnation. There are no winners. When the Black Africans gained their independence they were understandably elated. Mugabe was their hero. How could they believe that he would pillage his own people and destroy the country? Under British colonial rule, the white minority ran their farms efficiently and made their country prosper. But, at what cost? The black majority was not running the government, and they, naturally, resented white rule. After the war, whites resented the blacks for taking what they had built without any compensation. A lose, lose situation all around. It isn't until the end of the book that Aqui's actions give a hint as to the possibility of some form of resolution.

She was the first person to fly across the Atlantic from London to Newfoundland... a much more difficult feat than Lindberg's because she was flying against the prevailing winds. Beryl was raised in Africa during the 20's, long before the wars that completely changed the continent. Her childhood seems to have been one of unfettered freedom. She claims, carrying only a spear, to have gone lion hunting with natives who were equally ill-armed. She also raised and successfully trained horses and was the first woman licensed as a bush pilot. And, in her spare time, she had numerous affairs with some of Africa's most famous men. (Some of whom she shared with Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen, of "Out of Africa" fame.) Her accomplishments are incredible. Also incredible is her way of turning a phrase. Her choice of words is amazingly beautiful, especially since it appears that she had very little formal education. Hemingway claims that all of her accounts are "absolutely true." Wonder if he fell under her spell as well? It is noteworthy that she never mentions her husbands... she had several. And, it's of particular note because it has been suggested that her husband at the time of the manuscript's creation was the actual writer. Of course, many famous people have had ghost writers for their memoirs, so I guess she's no worse than any of them.

review:
After reading this book I don't know how anyone could live in Zimbabwe. The depravation is horrid, not just for displaced whites but for blacks as well. What Mugabe did to that country is unforgivable. Having flown over, I saw for myself the ruin of the agricultural economy. Land that had been thriving farms lies fallow. Having only seen the airport in Harare, I had no idea what life was like in the capital city. Now that I do know, from reading this book, I am amazed that the city exists at all... and, more importantly, how any whites can tolerate the conditions imposed by the dictatorship. It makes you realize how much they love their country despite what it has become. I doubt that I could be so attached to a place that so obviously didn't want me... especially to the extent that these people are. The author's mother was a physician and his father an engineer in July 1996 when the story begins. It ends in February 2004 with his father's death. Although the war is over, the consequences still leave the populace reeling. Whether Zimbabwe can ever recover is, as yet, indeterminable.

review:
The author was a screenwriter during the 40's and 50's. He seemed to know just about everybody in Hollywood so this reads a bit like a who's who list. It is interesting to get a peek at the "inside" of famous people but the writer doesn't offer that many deep insights into his friends. He also spends an awful lot of time recounting his travels. Again, not so much in details about the places but rather: "I was here, then I went there, then I was in...." And the guy did lots of travel! I can't even list how many times he went back and forth across the Atlantic. Travel wasn't that easy in those days so it's amazing to read how everybody was galavanting around the world and running into each other everywhere they went. Like all memoirs, the author has chosen only to show us what he wants to us to see. He says he feels guilt about leaving his pregnant wife for a fashion model but there's not really a sense of shame. He describes many of his friends as sleeping around as though it were the norm... which maybe it was in his crowd. He has little contact with his daughter until she is seven years old. Not exactly your doting dad. I found that I didn't particularly like this man. I kept wondering what everyone saw in him. His friends were incredibly generous and he just seemed to accept their generosity as if it were his due. He mooched off of nearly everyone and yet they kept inviting him back. I don't know that I would have been so willing to provide food and lodging to this man. Ironically, I think the author is the Dangerous Friend.

<![CDATA[Rainbow's End: A Memoir of Childhood, War and an African Farm]]> 102450 Rainbow's End captures the overwhelming beauty and extraordinary danger of life in the African bush. Lauren's childhood reads like a girl's own adventure story. At the height of the war, Lauren rides through the wilderness on her horse, Morning Star, encountering lions, crocodiles, snakes, vicious ostriches, and mad cows. Many of the animals are pets, including Miss Piggy and Bacon and an elegant giraffe named Jenny. The constant threat of ruthless guerrillas prowling the land underscores everything, making each day more dangerous, vivid, and prized than the last.
After Independence, Lauren comes to the bitter realization that she'd been on the wrong side of the civil war. While she and her family believed that they were fighting for democracy over Communism, others saw the war as black against white. And when Robert Mugabe comes into power, he oversees the torture and persecution of thousands of members of an opposing tribe and goes on to become one of Africa's legendary dictators. The ending of this memoir is a fist to the stomach as Lauren realizes that she can be British or American, but she cannot be African. She can love it - be willing to die for it - but she cannot claim Africa because she is white.]]>

review:
This memoir takes place in Botswana. Since being in Zimbabwe last June, I have begun searching out more books on Africa. (Of course I'd read "Out of Africa" before going.) Like "The Flame Trees of Thika," this is told from the point of view of a young girl whose adventurous family settles in Africa. The main difference is how recently this story takes place, the 1990's, and the author is only in her twenties now. Both books describe hardships but, due to their youth, the authors don't really have to deal with the adversity. Their parents do. And, in both cases, the parents seem to have made light of their struggles in front of the children, For the kids, it's all an adventurous lark. All of which makes Africa seem almost benign. To be fair, there are references to AIDS, death, etc., but for the most part, it just seems fun.

The Book of Murder 4067797 A gripping tale of revenge and rivalry from the author of The Oxford Murders

Argentinean author Guillermo Martínez’s work appeals to fans of both literary fiction and mysteries. Now, with this new tale of psychological suspense, Martínez is poised to expand on the success of The Oxford Murders.

The narrator is an up-and-coming young writer who has little in common with Kloster—a literary giant whose disturbing crime novels dominate the bestseller lists. However, they have both, at one time, employed the secretarial services of the alluring Luciana B. Out of the past, Luciana makes a desperate plea to the young writer. She thinks that Kloster is slowly killing off everyone close to her—can he help before her grandmother and younger sister are murdered?

While the narrator suspects her misfortunes have driven her mad, Kloster has a powerful motive; and eerie parallels surface between the murders in Kloster’s books and the real-life deaths surrounding Luciana. As the body count multiplies, the question arises: Can words really kill? Fans of both Alfred Hitchcock and Carlos Ruiz Zafón will be thrilled with Martínez’s literary murder mystery.]]>

Having been a teacher for many years who had autistic students in my class, I was intrigued by this novel. I think anyone who has dealt with autism wonders what's going on inside their heads. How do they perceive things so differently from the rest of us "normal" people? This book shows: not so strangely as we might suppose. Which, in turn, reminds us that we don't know how the other "normal" folks around us are receiving stimuli. They just happen to react in ways which we expect. If we learn nothing else from this novel, it's that we are all confined within our own unique experience.

And, like the movie, I enjoyed it thoroughly. There was an unexpected sense of humor. I liked Humbert in spite of his perverse proclivities. I think we all have a bit of pervert in us when it comes to the loveliness of youth. Who isn't drawn to flawless skin devoid of age spots and wrinkles? Who doesn't yearn for taut musculature and appreciate it when we see it? We delight in children because they are children... unlike us adults.

I read this so long ago that I don't remember it that well. I enjoy "true crime" novels and this fit the bill. It, like so may others of this genre, reminds us that murder happens to ordinary people. You'd be amazed how many people you may know who have had some experience with ghastly death. It's not a subject one generally brings up in polite conversation but if someone who has been a victim mentions it, it's surprising what others can contributer to the conversation.

The Devil in the White City 21996
Erik Larson's gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America's rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his "World's Fair Hotel" just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium. Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake.

The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. In this book the smoke, romance, and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive as never before.]]>

Having just returned from Chicago, I was very interested in learning more about the Exposition held there. I wish I'd read this before going! Fascinating story of powerful men with big egos; which Chicago seems to have abounded with: Frank Lloyd Wright for example. I wish the book contained more photos of the buildings; which was not the author's fault. Many were not much more than papier-mache and didn't last long so it's a shame that more photos weren't taken at the time.

This book is WAAAY too long. I had to really persevere to get through it's 1474 pages. Due to family connections, I am interested in learning more about India. This novel tells more than I wanted. A good editor should have pared several hundred pages. There is so much about Indian politics that it interferes with the story. It sometimes felt like a dissertation instead of a novel. There are valuable insights about the Indian character but there's a much better book, Shantaram, that I HIGHLY recommend. The irony is that Shantaram is written by a non-Indian. And, although Shantaram is also quite lengthy, I never felt bogged down.

<![CDATA[Belly of the Beast: A POW's Inspiring True Story Faith Courage Survival Aboard The Infamous WWII Japanese Hell Ship Oryoku Maru]]> 433079
The son of a Kentucky sharecropper and an enlistee in the Navy’s medical corps, Myers arrived in Manilla shortly before the bombings of Pearl Harbor and the other six targets of the Imperial Japanese military. While he and his fellow corpsmen tended to the bloody tide of soldiers pouring into their once peaceful Naval hospital, the Japanese overwhelmed the Pacific islands, capturing 78,000 POWs by April 1942. Myers was one of the first captured.

After a brutal three-year encampment, Myers and his fellow POWs were forced onto an enemy hell ship bound for Japan. Suffocation, malnutrition, disease, dehydration, infestation, madness, and simple despair claimed the lives of nearly three quarters of those who boarded "the beast".

Myers survived.

A compelling account of a rarely recorded event in military history, this is more than Estel Myers true story—this is an homage to the unfailing courage of men at war, an inspiring chronicle of self-sacrifice and endurance, and a tribute to the power of faith, the strength of the soul, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Since my father was a prisoner of the Japanese during WWII and survived two hell ship encounters, I was curious to see how this story compared. My father kept a diary and his descriptions of being held captive in the holds of Japanese ships was, in some ways, more descriptive since he wrote it while he was actually experiencing it rather than relying on memory.

Loving Frank 898885 I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current.

So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. Four years earlier, in 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock Chicago society and forever change their lives.

In this ambitious debut novel, fact and fiction blend together brilliantly. While scholars have largely relegated Mamah to a footnote in the life of America’s greatest architect, author Nancy Horan gives full weight to their dramatic love story and illuminates Cheney’s profound influence on Wright.

Drawing on years of research, Horan weaves little-known facts into a compelling narrative, vividly portraying the conflicts and struggles of a woman forced to choose between the roles of mother, wife, lover, and intellectual. Horan’s Mamah is a woman seeking to find her own place, her own creative calling in the world. Mamah’s is an unforgettable journey marked by choices that reshape her notions of love and responsibility, leading inexorably ultimately lead to this novel’s stunning conclusion.

Elegantly written and remarkably rich in detail, Loving Frank is a fitting tribute to a courageous woman, a national icon, and their timeless love story.]]>
