Set in the 14th Century this is the tale of a young man who studied to be a surgeon and ends taking a position as surgeon and then bailiff for the local lord. His called to identify the remains found while cleaning out the cesspit at the Lords castle and when he suspects that the boned belong to a young girl is then charged with finding out who killed her. There is a glossary in the front of the book and its needed because many of the words and terms are those of the period. This was a fun read with the reluctant sleuth trying to uncover the killer while tending to the ills of the locals as the surgeon and becoming smitten with the Lord’s sister who is obviously above his station as the 3th son of a minor knight. If you come across this one, give it a try.
