While perusing reviews by others on this story, I was astounded at the fierceness and deep anguish this slim novel created in people. And the disbelief of these atrocities having ever occurred in human history is unthinkable.

The Thirteenth Tale 40440
The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish life histories for herself -- all of them inventions that have brought her fame and fortune but have kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary life. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth, hidden by those who loved her most, remains an ever-present pain. Struck by a curious parallel between Miss Winter's story and her own, Margaret takes on the commission.

As Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire.

Margaret succumbs to the power of Vida's storytelling but remains suspicious of the author's sincerity. She demands the truth from Vida, and together they confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves.

The Thirteenth Tale is a love letter to reading, a book for the feral reader in all of us, a return to that rich vein of storytelling that our parents loved and that we loved as children. Diane Setterfield will keep you guessing, make you wonder, move you to tears and laughter and, in the end, deposit you breathless yet satisfied back upon the shore of your everyday life.]]>

And Then There Were None 16299
"Ten little boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine. Nine little boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were eight. Eight little boys traveling in Devon; One said he'd stay there then there were seven. Seven little boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in half and then there were six. Six little boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were five. Five little boys going in for law; One got in Chancery and then there were four. Four little boys going out to sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were three. Three little boys walking in the zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were two. Two little boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one. One little boy left all alone; He went out and hanged himself and then there were none."

When they realize that murders are occurring as described in the rhyme, terror mounts. One by one they fall prey. Before the weekend is out, there will be none. Who has choreographed this dastardly scheme? And who will be left to tell the tale? Only the dead are above suspicion.]]>

You follow ten people as they embark on a journey to an isolated island for seemingly various reasons but upon arriving at the designated destination, they discover that they are there for a more sinister reason. Each discovers that they, along with their fellow guest are charged with crimes that have fallen underneath the law and are not able to be charged with a felony. Some quickly agree with the charges while others are steadfast in their conviction that they are innocent. As the story progresses, the list of suspects slowly whittles it's way down to just a few and the suspense magnifies.

The Bookman’s Tale 16158563
Hay-on-Wye, 1995. Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amanda, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it isn't really her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins.

As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare's time, Peter communes with Amanda's spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays.]]>

When a young man is discovered murdered on a house boat, the police start investing. A young girl is seen leaving the house boat, so everything should be easy. Instead, this story takes you on a rollercoaster of characters and timelines. Each of the characters has flaws, each one has a reason to want to see an end to the young man. The author explores how past wrongs can fester and consume a person. There was a passage that was referring to books but I thought it summed up the whole premise of the storyline: Succumbing already to slow fire, the acidification of the paper destroying it from within, eating away at the pages, making them brittle and breakable.
I admit I did have to sketch out a map of the characters to keep the straight at first but once I settled into the story, everything fit together.

Spanning four years, we follow the epic journey of a young blind French girl and a German boy recruited by the Nazis. Throughout the majority of the story, these two lives run parallel and only intersect towards the end. It is, nonetheless, a remarkable story of love, friendship, forgiveness, and triumph. This was my first time reading this author, but I loved the attention to detail and the depth of the characters. I mistakenly saw the movie prior to reading this, but I am so glad that I went ahead and read the book. There were so many more details that just made it it that more remarkable! I highly recommend this one!

<![CDATA[Angels & Demons (Robert Langdon, #1)]]> 3565313
A devastating new weapon of destruction.
When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.

Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.
Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.

An explosive international thriller, Angels & Demons careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war.]]>

I was so excited to read this, it has been sitting on my physical bookshelves for a very long time and due to a monthly book club request, it finally came up as a book to read for the month. Sadly, I didn't enjoy it. I found the small cast of characters to confusing to keep track of. I actually cheated in that I wrote down each character and the pages their stories appeared on and read them sequential instead of the order in the book. I found this a little better....but the stories were all the same basic concept. A female in China during the Japanese occupation and then escapes to the United States, finds an American Husband and has children who are not sure if they are Chinese or American. Each of the daughters seemed to have the same marriage problems. I did find the writing to be lyrical and colorful but it just wasn't good enough for me to enjoy the book.

Dracula [Adaptation] 682741
Can there be a more terrifying tale than this? The story of the notorious vampire Count Dracula, lord of the undead, who rises from his coffin at night to suck the blood of the living is, undoubtedly, the stuff of nightmares. A lunatic asylum, a bleak Transylvanian castle, an ancient cemetary . . . these are the dark backgrounds to the even darker deeds portrayed in this most bloodcurdling of tales.

Narrated from several viewpoints, DRACULA is a complex story that many know, but few have actually read. Jan Needle's newly edited version makes the gripping events accessible to the twenty-first reader without losing the incomparably chilling atmosphere of Bram Stoker's original novel.]]>

In Five Years 50093704 Where do you see yourself in five years?

When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Kohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready. Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend's marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan.

But when she wakes up, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date. It’s the same night—December 15—but 2025, five years in the future.

After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020. She can’t shake what has happened. It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn’t the kind of person who believes in visions. That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella. Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind.

That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision.

Brimming with joy and heartbreak, In Five Years is an unforgettable love story that reminds us of the power of loyalty, friendship, and the unpredictable nature of destiny.]]>

When journalist Maureen Callahan first heard about Israel Keyes in 2012, she was captivated by how a killer of this magnitude could go undetected by law enforcement for over a decade. And so began a project that consumed her for the next several years--uncovering the true story behind how the FBI ultimately caught Israel Keyes, and trying to understand what it means for a killer like Keyes to exist. A killer who left a path of monstrous, randomly committed crimes in his wake--many of which remain unsolved to this day.

American Predator is the ambitious culmination of years of interviews with key figures in law enforcement and in Keyes's life, and research uncovered from classified FBI files. Part travelogue, part cookbook and part memoir, this book is an astounding blending of what is great about American and what is wrong. Following a list of food items that Mark Twain yearned for while traveling abroad, Andrew Beahrs embarks on a journey to find some of the more elusive items. But some of the things that Twain enjoyed as a child or young man are no longer available to us due to the over-fishing/hunting/crowding that we as humans can produce. Most of these foods are wildlife and it was sad to read how some of the fish and game are no longer available. The beauty of Twain's feast was that it included food from woodland and wetland, from all different parts of geographical regions of America and each food was the essence of that region.

The author also discusses how we can support the local people who are growing or producing food items within each region and make an effort to purchase our items from them and to use locally grown items. I know that has been said a thousand times but reading this novel made things come into focus a little better.

<![CDATA[Markets of Paris: Food, Antiques, Artisanal Crafts, Books & More, with Restaurant Recommendations]]> 480794

Perhaps the most pleasurable way for any visitor to feel at home in Paris–and one of the easiest ways to get to know the city–is to meander through any of its dozens of street markets. It's also the best way to find a wide variety of uniquely French gifts–from antique books and botanical prints to flea market finds and household goods–not to mention legendary cheeses, produce, and bounty of the French countryside.

The authors have explored and described every market in every neighborhood. They also have included streets that are devoted to selling one type of thing–from the centuries-old booksellers along the Seine to those lined with stores selling items as varied as fabric and discounted designer clothing.

And, for everyone who feels their time in the city is all too short, they have suggested itineraries based on the opening days of the markets with local restaurant recommendations.

Also included are tips, translations of important phrases, and pointers on what to look for so that the visitor will be able to make the most of this exhilarating and fun French experience.

All the market information is supplemented by sidebars that round out the experience, including a listing of favorite wine bars, a visit to the wood oven in the cellar of the famous bakery Poilane, and strolls down the best shopping streets in Paris.]]>

<![CDATA[The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast]]> 51029
First came the hurricane, one of the three strongest ever to make landfall in the United States -- 150-mile-per-hour winds, with gusts measuring more than 180 miles per hour ripping buildings to pieces.

Second, the storm-surge flooding, which submerged a half million homes, creating the largest domestic refugee crisis since the Civil War. Eighty percent of New Orleans was under water, as debris and sewage coursed through the streets, and whole towns in south-eastern Louisiana ceased to exist.

And third, the human tragedy of government mis-management, which proved as cruel as the natural disaster itself. Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, implemented an evacuation plan that favored the rich and healthy. Kathleen Blanco, governor of Louisiana, dithered in the most important aspect of her job: providing leadership in a time of fear and confusion. Michael C. Brown, the FEMA director, seemed more concerned with his sartorial splendor than the specter of death and horror that was taking New Orleans into its grip.

In The Great Deluge, bestselling author Douglas Brinkley, a New Orleans resident and professor of history at Tulane University, rips the story of Katrina apart and relates what the Category 3 hurricane was like from every point of view. The book finds the true heroes -- such as Coast Guard officer Jimmy Duckworth and hurricane jock Tony Zumbado.

Throughout the book, Brinkley lets the Katrina survivors tell their own stories, masterly allowing them to record the nightmare that was Katrina. <![CDATA[Spirits of the Earth: A Guide to Native American Nature Symbols, Stories, and Ceremonies]]> 413846
“There are ancient secrets and lessons hidden in nature. If you seek for guidance, you will discover truth.”—Bobby Lake-Thom

Much of the ancient knowledge that has been passed down from Native American medicine men, or shamans is in danger of being lost. Bobby Lake-Thom, a Native American healer known as Medicine Grizzly Bear, has sought to preserve this powerful heritage by sharing his wisdom and experience learning from the world around us.Ěý

What does it mean if a hawk appears in a dream? What are the symbolic interpretations of a deer, a skunk, a raccoon? Lake-Thom, who has studied with the elders of many tribes, explains the significance of animal figures as manifestations of good or evil, and shows how we can develop our own powers of awareness and intuition. The first book of its kind, this practical and enlightening resource includes dozens of fascinating animal myths and legends, as well as exercises and activities that draw upon animal powers for guidance, healing, wisdom, and the expansion of spiritual influences in our lives. You'll discover

•ĚýHow animals, birds, and insects act as signs and omens
•ĚýThe significance of vision quests
•ĚýHow to make and use a medicine wheel
•ĚýThe role of spirit symbols—and how they affect the unconscious
•ĚýExercises for creative dreaming
•ĚýThe power of the earth-healing ceremony
•ĚýHow to increase your spiritual strength and create sacred spaces
•ĚýAnd more....]]>

A nice guide to understanding Native American beliefs and their use of Nature to guide them through life. Very easy to read and understand, the main theme being that Nature can and does communicate with us, if we would only open our eyes and ears and listen.

After years of serving the corrupt Roelle at his ranch in Spain, Daumia at last begins to think of his freedom - of paying back the men who accused him and finding a way to rise in the world. What he cannot foresee is the extent of his danger or the depth of the depravity of those who would hide their own crimes behind his ignorance.

Freeing himself from their deceptions may take more than Daumia is prepared to give. It may, in fact, require his very life.

In this sweeping saga of betrayal and corruption in 15th century Spain, VMK Fewings introduces us to her epic Stone Masters Vampire Series. This is the story of the man who would become one of the most powerful vampires in history. Behind the legendary Orpheus is the history of a conflicted man fighting for his place in the world - and before that, a young boy who was not meant to survive the graveyard.]]>

While de Becker offers a very thought-provoking look at various real-life situation that can turn violent, he most repeated phrase is one that most of us in America might scoff at. To listen to your intuition. That little voice inside your head is actually there to save your life, so listen to it. However, I also found his many statistics as heartbreaking. The fact that by tomorrow, 400 American will suffer a shooting injury or 70 children will die within the week at the hands of a parent. 4 million will be abused within the year. And you personally know a woman who is being abused.

For me, this is easily a book that I would recommend to anyone, male or female.

If you enjoy courtroom drama and intriguing history stories, then you might enjoy this tale of a young German immigrant who finds herself involved in a legal battle with a wealthy New Orleans slave owner. The whole town picks sides - is she really a lost German girl mistakenly thought to be a slave or is she really a slave who is trying desperately to win her freedom? I found the whole tale thoroughly enjoyable and even after reading the author's opinion, not sure I even know the real answer.

Loose Girl is Kerry Cohen's captivating memoir about her descent into promiscuity and how she gradually found her way toward real intimacy. The story of addiction--not just to sex, but to male attention--Loose Girl is also the story of a young girl who came to believe that boys and men could give her life meaning. Never less than riveting, Loose Girl re-creates what it feels like to be in that desperate moment when a girl tries to control a boy by handing over her body, when the touch of that boy seems to offer proof of something but ultimately delivers little more than emptiness. Someone had suggested this book to me and it has been languishing on my bookshelf for a few years. In an effort to purge some books from my physical shelves, I chose this one, thinking it would be an interesting read. It was not. I hate the fact that I can not put a book down even when I know that there is nothing redeeming about it, yet I hang in there, hoping there will be a grand finale. I was rewarded with a depressing, murky feeling after finishing this story. I understand that she slept with a lot of boys/men, it was still too many names to keep track of. There was no glorious moment when she decided to turn her life around, just another man who happened to propose. Not a book I would recommend to anyone.

It's been a long time since I have read a Stephen King novel. As much as I love horror, I had never read 'Misery' and can't give you a good reason why. But now I can say that I have and I loved it! Talk about a story giving you nightmares. Nothing is more creepy than a normal (or seemingly normal) human being going over the deep end and turning bat guano crazy.

Blindness 2526 No food, no water, no government, no obligation, no order.

Discover a
chillingly powerful and prescient dystopian vision from one of Europe's greatest writers.

A driver waiting at the traffic lights goes blind. An ophthalmologist tries to diagnose his distinctive white blindness, but is affected before he can read the textbooks.
It becomes a contagion, spreading throughout the city. Trying to stem the epidemic, the authorities herd the afflicted into a mental asylum where the wards are terrorised by blind thugs. And when fire destroys the asylum, the inmates burst forth and the last links with a supposedly civilised society are snapped.

This is not anarchy, this is blindness.

â€Saramago repeatedly undertakes to unite the pressing demands of the present with an unfolding vision of the future. This is his most apocalyptic, and most optimistic, version of that project yetâ€ Independent

When a man goes blind while sitting inside his car, people assume his is an isolated case. The blind man's wife takes him to see an eye doctor to prescribe a prescription to cure his ailment. But when the wife becomes blind as well as the eye doctor and everyone in the waiting room, it soon becomes clear that this is not an isolated case and soon an epidemic of 'blindness' is sweeping the country. To help contain the spread of the disease, the ones who are suffering are placed in an abandoned metal asylum, hoping that a cure can be found. Instead, the epidemic moves to the guards and no one is left to maintain order in the facility. The bad ones soon take over and rule by terror to gain what they want. Yet a small band of people stick together and eventually they escape and try to navigate their way around the city where they once moved so freely but are now having to relearn how to 'see' things in a totally different way.

Since I tend to have a more eclectic taste in reading material than most, I don't normally follow the mainstream reading guides and miss a lot of the more hyped up novels. However I do love to watch a good movie, so the conundrum comes when a movie is released based on one of the hyped-up novels and I can't stand to watch a movie before reading the book. Atlas, there is only one solution. To Read The Book. Which is how this one ended up on my reading list. And I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. I do love a good thriller and this one was on target. A bunch of unlikable characters, all with numerous faults and secrets to hide. I became so engaged, I even felt the need to hit a bottle or two while reading. Overall, it was an enjoyable ride.

Witches of America 23847957 "Witches are gathering."

Although a self-proclaimed skeptic, Alex Mar has secretly longed for revelation, envying people with unshakable beliefs. And so when she set out to direct the documentary American Mystic, she was drawn deep into the world of present-day witchcraft. Most people hear "witches" and think of horror films and Halloween, but to the one million Americans who practice Paganism, it's a nature-worshipping, polytheistic, and very real religion.

Witches of America follows Mar on her trip into Paganism and the occult, from its roots in 1950s England to its current American mecca in the Bay Area; from a gathering of more than a thousand witches in the Illinois woods to the New Orleans branch of one of the world's most influential magical societies. She takes part in dozens of rituals, some vast and some intimate, alongside all sorts of people-single mothers, programmers, veterans, and one California priestess who becomes a close friend. This world gives Mar the freedom to confront what she believes is possible-or hopes might be.

With the wit of Susan Orlean and the insight of Leslie Jamison, Mar provides a fresh, unexpected take on faith in America. Whether evangelical, pagan priestess, or atheist, each of us craves a system of meaning to give structure to our lives, and we sometimes find it in unexpected places. Witches of America asks the central question: Why do we choose to believe in anything at all?]]>

I happened upon this one at the local library and since I have become curious about different types of witchcraft, I thought this might help clear up some issues. But it did not. More a personal journey than an actual account of the different types. And the journey isn't a very interesting one. Mar's account of her journey across American was jumbled and sometimes I would have to look book to see who and where she was. And the one person in a group that she seemed to follow the most, I felt like it was more of an infatuation with the person than the actual belief.

This book took me way too long to finish, should have probably ditched it but I'm funny that way, carry on until the end. Not a book I would recommend for pretty much anyone.

Corduroy 231850 Corduroy has been on the department store shelf for a long time...

Yet as soon as Lisa sees him, she knows that he's the bear she's always wanted. Her mother, though, thinks he's a little shopworn—he's even missing a button! Still, Corduroy knows that with a bit of work he can tidy himself up and be just the bear for Lisa. And where better to start than with a quick search through the department store for a new button!

Corduroy, with his unaffected simplicity and childlike emotion, is one of the best-loved bears in children's books. His story has become an irresistible childhood classic, as basic and appealing as a small bear's desire for a home and a friend and the perfect fulfillment found in the devotion of a young girl.

Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, and moved to New York City to study art, making his living as a jazz trumpeter. With this loss of his trumpet on a subway train, Mr. Freeman turned his talents to art full-time. In the 1940s he began writing and illustrating children's books; his many popular titles include Beady Bear, Dandelion, Mop Top, Norman the Doorman, and his follow-up to Corduroy, A Pocket For Corduroy. At the time of his death in 1978, the Los Angeles Times wrote: "Ingeniousness and humor, theatricality and commonality, humanity and beauty: these elements survive in his picture books."

<![CDATA[Sitting Bull: Lakota Warrior and Defender of His People]]> 24795881
Sitting Bull (c. 18311890) was one of the greatest Lakota/Sioux warriors and chiefs who ever lived. He was eventually named war chief, leader of the entire Sioux nation—a title never before bestowed on anyone. As a leader, Sitting Bull resisted the United States government’s attempt to move the Lakota/Sioux to reservations for more than 25 years.

From Sitting Bull’s childhood—killing his first buffalo at age 10—to being named war chief, to leading his people against the US Army, and to his surrender, Sitting Lakota Warrior and Defender of His People brings the story of the great chief to light. Sitting Bull was instrumental in the war against the invasive wasichus (White Man) and was at the forefront of the combat, including the battles of Killdeer Mountain and Little Bighorn. He and Crazy Horse were the last Lakota/Sioux to surrender their people to the US government and resort to living on a reservation.

Award-winning author and member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe S. D. Nelson intersperses archival images with his own artwork, inspired by the ledger-art drawings of the 19th-century Lakota. Through the art and riveting story, Nelson conveys how Sitting Bull clung to his belief that the Lakota were a free people meant to live, hunt, and die on the Great Plains.]]>

The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

This is the second book in the Broken Empire trilogy. The story is set four years after the first book, Jorg is now King of Renar. The book follows three story lines - two from Jorg's POV - the main one being present day which also happens to be his wedding day, a flashback of four years ago and the third story line follows journal entries from Katherine, which help give a well-roundness to the whole story.

<![CDATA[The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II]]> 15801668 The incredible story of the young women of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who unwittingly played a crucial role in one of the most significant moments in U.S. history. The Tennessee town of Oak Ridge was created from scratch in 1942. One of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities, it didn’t appear on any maps until 1949, and yet at the height of World War II it was using more electricity than New York City and was home to more than 75,000 people, many of them young women recruited from small towns across the South. Their jobs were shrouded in mystery, but they were buoyed by a sense of shared purpose, close friendships—and a surplus of handsome scientists and Army men!

But against this vibrant wartime backdrop, a darker story was unfolding. The penalty for talking about their work—even the most innocuous details—was job loss and eviction. One woman was recruited to spy on her coworkers. They all knew something big was happening at Oak Ridge, but few could piece together the true nature of their work until the bomb "Little Boy" was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, and the secret was out. The shocking revelation: the residents of Oak Ridge were enriching uranium for the atomic bomb.

Though the young women originally believed they would leave Oak Ridge after the war, many met husbands there, made lifelong friends, and still call the seventy-year-old town home. The reverberations from their work there—work they didn’t fully understand at the time—are still being felt today. In The Girls of Atomic City, Denise Kiernan traces the astonishing story of these unsung WWII workers through interviews with dozens of surviving women and other Oak Ridge residents. Like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, this is history and science made fresh and vibrant—a beautifully told, deeply researched story that unfolds in a suspenseful and exciting way.

Amelia Gray has been haunted by ghost her whole life. Growing up as the only child of a cemetery keeper, her father taught her the rules - Never acknowledge the dead, never stray from hallowed ground, keep your distance from those that are haunted. Yet when a dashing detective approaches Amelia about a murder at a graveyard she is restoring, all the rules fly out the window and she finds herself on treading on unfamiliar ground, not know which way she should go.

<![CDATA[The Infernals (Samuel Johnson, #2)]]> 11165590 From New York Times bestselling author John Connolly, a wonderfully strange and brilliant novel about a boy and his dog and their journey to escape the fires of hell.

“Roald Dahl meets Harry Potter* in this wonderfully strange and brilliant novel about a boy, his dog, and their struggle to escape the wrath of demons.

Young Samuel Johnson is in trouble. Not only is his eyesight so poor that he mistakenly asks out a letter box on a date but an angry demon wants revenge for Samuel’s part in foiling the invasion of Earth by the forces of evil. When Samuel and his faithful dachshund, Boswell, are pulled through a portal into the dark realm, home of the Infernals, it gets its chance.

Catching Samuel won’t be easy, for the Infernals have not reckoned on the bravery and cleverness of a boy and his dog; a hapless demon’s loyalty to the duo; or the presence of two clueless policemen and an unlucky, if cheerfully optimistic, ice-cream man.

Most of all, no one has planned on the intervention of an unexpected band of little men who also have recently found themselves in the underworld. If you thought demons were frightening, just wait until you meet Mr. Merryweather’s Elves. . . .

<![CDATA[Grave Goods (Mistress of the Art of Death, #3)]]> 3751995 Combining the best of modern forensic thrillers with the drama of medieval fiction, New York Times' bestselling author Ariana Franklin returns with the third title in the Mistress of the Art of Death series.

England, 1176. Beautiful, tranquil Glastonbury Abbey—one of England's holiest sites, and believed by some to be King Arthur's sacred Isle of Avalon—has been burned almost to the ground. The arsonist remains at large, but the fire has uncovered something even more shocking: two hidden skeletons, a man and a woman. The skeletons' height and age send rumors flying- are the remains those of Arthur and Guinevere?

King Henry II hopes so. Struggling to put down a rebellion in Wales, where the legend of Celtic savior Arthur is particularly strong, Henry wants definitive proof that the bones are Arthur's. If the rebels are sure that the Once and Future King will not be coming to their aid, Henry can stamp out the insurgence for good. He calls on Adelia Aguilar, Mistress of the Art of Death, to examine the bones.

Henry's summons comes not a moment too soon, for Adelia has worn out her welcome in Cambridge. As word of her healing powers has spread, so have rumors of witchcraft. So Adelia and her household ride to Glastonbury, where the investigation into the abbey fire will be overseen by the Church authorities—in this case, the Bishop of St. Albans, who happens also to be the father of Adelia's daughter.]]>

The Girl from the Train 24689357 Six-year-old Gretl Schmidt is on a train bound for Auschwitz.ĚýJakĂłb Kowalski is planting a bomb on the tracks.

As World War II draws to a close, Jakób fights with the Polish resistance against the crushing forces of Germany and Russia. They intend to destroy a German troop transport, but Gretl’s unscheduled train reaches the bomb first.

Gretl is the only survivor. Though spared from the concentration camp, the orphaned German Jew finds herself lost in a country hostile to her people. When JakĂłb discovers her, guilt and fatherly compassion prompt him to take her in. For three years, the young man and little girl form a bond over the secrets they must hide from his Catholic family.

But she can’t stay with him forever. Jakób sends Gretl to South Africa, where German war orphans are promised bright futures with adoptive Protestant families—so long as Gretl’s Jewish roots, Catholic education, and connections to communist Poland are never discovered.

Separated by continents, politics, religion, language, and years, JakĂłb and Gretl will likely never see each other again. But the events they have both survived and their belief that the human spirit can triumph over the ravages of war have formed a bond of love that no circumstances can overcome.

Jorg of Ancrath is not your normal teenager. No, no, no. At the age of thirteen, he is the leader of a motley crew of bandits who terrorize the land burning villages, killing the men and raping women. Yes, he is most definitely not your average youth. But once you can get past the bloody mess, there is a story there. Of how at an even younger age, he witnessed part of his family brutally murdered. Of having a father who is king and a dangerous and violent man himself, you start to piece together a story of how this young man came to be. Oh, and the wizards, did I mention them? See, there is magic in the story and everyone wants to be King of All the land, so they will resort to all kinds of trickery to gain the upper hand.

Let me say here and now, this is NOT a story for everyone! Personally, I loved it and will be reading the rest of the series. Fantasy is not a genre that I would normally gravitate to but this one quickly pulled me in and I loved it.
