"As the heat finally disappeared, I felt the bloom blossom in the very core of my soul, a rose just like my name--a ticking clock hidden behind a façade of beauty. From that moment on, my life would become a countdown, and all I could do was wait and watch as the petals of time slowly started to fall."

Omorose Bouchene has a secret--magic. There's only one problem. At the age of seven, an earthquake struck, catapulting her into a new world. A land made of skyscrapers and cell phones. Fast cars and fluorescent lights. A land where magic isn't supposed to exist and anyone who wields it is the enemy.

But after ten years of hiding, she's desperate to find a place where she can be free. Because all magic comes with a curse, and her curse is time--every ounce of power she uses strips days off of her life. The clock is winding down, and the only option left is to escape to the realm of the Beast. But the king of monsters isn't what he seems. And the more Omorose opens her heart, the more she comes to realize that the only person she may need to fear is herself.

Caraval (Caraval, #1) 27883214 A legendary competition.
A mesmerizing romance.
An unbreakable bond
between two sisters.

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

I'll start with the good because I like to briefly skim over what I liked about books and spend my time on complaining because I'm not the best human being. I actually genuinely enjoyed this book. I was never bored reading it, the concept was very cool (at least until the ending) and while the characters weren't all that interesting, it was still easy to slip into the main characters shoes and follow her on her adventure. Our Scarlett was, for once, not the cliche "badass-know-it-all-I-don't-need-help" trope that we see in EVERY female YA protagonist now. It was refreshing and a nice break from the inevitable.

Now for the good stuff...commence the complaining.

I have a shelf on here called "The ending made this book". Now I need to add one called "The ending ruined this book".

Seriously...what kind of cheap, no good, lazy and half assed ending was that? I want thirty minutes of my life back.

The whole book had this amazingly dark, cloudy looming over it. It STARTED dark, was dark halfway through and just as you thought was going to end dark...unicorns and sparkles out of nowhere. The entire tone of this book was ruined in literally four sentences at the end and basically made the first 400 pages a huge "just kidding!!!" for every reader. It's insulting and that is the only reason this book didn't reach more than three stars for me.

I wanted someone to die. ANYONE. That's what she was playing up literally the whole fkking book. But then, just as stuff gets juicy, [spoilers removed] because Stephanie Garber hates us. She HATES me. She made me bloodthirsty and then slapped me on the wrist and told me I was a sick freak and that's just not okay dude.

Let's play "A few things I hate about you". There are spoilers here now so beware.

Towards the end when Scarlett finally finds her sister (which ends up being just ANOTHER ploy, even though you want nothing more than to punch Tella in the face when you finally do find her), she says "You can't be in love with someone you just met"....literally RIGHT after leaving the body of the man she fell in love with in three days.

I think Garber had a chance to make this a really interesting story if Juilan really had been Legend..but she dropped that ball. Real hard.

When "Legend" "kills" Julian in the tunnels, it really surprised me how quickly Julian gave up his ruse when fake Legend found his pocket watch on Scarlett. Like...bro after you were JUST exclaiming "Boy guess I'm a better liar than I thought!" you're not going to come up with SOMETHING?

A finally...WTF is with this color thing Scarlett sees? From page one she sees all these colors swirling around her and it continues to the end of the book like one HUGE acid trip gone wrong. It is literally never explained. Trust me. I waited for the explanation for 407 pages. Never got it.

But man did I really want this book to exceed my expectations. From page one I was setting my bar so low and it ended up pleasantly surprising me....until the ending that was the greatest disappointment of 2017.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.]]>

First off I want to say I am genuinely interested in how this series turns out. I don't particularly like Aveyard (Hence why I borrowed the book) or the way she responds to people. I also don't think the story is particularly original and Mare is one of the worst protagonists I have ever read. But BY GOD all of that aside, I still want to finish this series. That being said...

I suppose I expected so much more when Mare was captured. Instead I was skimming through until 50% of the book passed thinking "oh my GOSH she's STILL bitching and throwing things?" I have no idea why I needed to hear her drone on about how miserable she was as much as I did. I know I'm not alone in thinking the castle part of the book was going to be much...much more interesting. Instead I got an angsty teen unsure of her feelings towards a psychopath king who didn't want anyone to see Mare naked and I think maybe there was a scene where she brushed her teeth or something?

Mare is lifeless. Cal is lifelfess. Everyone in this book is lifeless. There is no depth, no charm and no evil to anyone. I don't read about Maven and just hate his guts and want to see him die. I don't fawn over Cal and I don't pump my fists when Mare does something. I don't care who she ends up with.

For anyone holding hope that she will end up with someone: do you honestly think one of the most outspoken feminist authors in YA literature today, who literally spits any questions about who Mare will be with back at her readers faces, is going to have her end up with ANYONE? You are sorely mistaken.

Mare will end up being alone, conquering the revolution and being independent and balhblabhlalbha happily ever after. Cool. Awesome. Can we see more cool powers now? like...I came for the lightning and that one girl who can literally blow up.

This book was a filler book. It was full of fluffy quotes about breaking people and monsters and some other things I misplaced my cares to give.

Another user on here gave some great advice: Read the last few pages of this awful book, skip it, and move on to number four. Oh how I wish I had listened to you.

But... Nyx was like... Kind of a hussie in the beginning. Let's be honest. And honestly, the bitch couldn't make up her mind.

I spent like 300 damn pages reading about this Herm-something magic only to see it very briefly for a sentence at the end of the book. Wtf. Seriously, wtf? I wanted more magic from my main character or less bitching or, idk, call me crazy, but DO SOMETHING COOL.

Also, I just feel like some authors run out of ideas for a super cool "wow factor" ending and decide to add memory loss or time travel JUST to eff with the readers head. Hodge decided "You know what? What a buncha garbage.

Perhaps it's because, after falling in love with Celaena, I absolutely despise her now. The reason I loved her in the first two books was because after all her suffering she was able to laugh and smile and love.

Now she's a Mary Sue (and quite literally the biggest prick you'll ever see in a female lead) and the only way she can redeem herself is to die.

I will not be continuing this. I have no interest in a 20 year older Claire or the adventures of her daughter. In fact, I couldn't give two shits less.

I wasn't convinced of this "deep, passionate love" that Jamie and Claire had. The ending was shit and I don't want to talk about it. I'm genuinely convinced no woman when faced with hot water, modern medicine and technology would ever choose the 18th century over that.

There were just too many things I couldn't get on board with. For example, by the end of the book I literally got bored of Jamie getting tortured. It seems to me that Gabdalon absolutely hates her male protagonist because she loves getting him kidnapped and tortured nearly to death every other chapter.

The three generous stars is because there were parts of the book I genuinely enjoyed. At this particular moment I can't think of any...but I know there were some!

<![CDATA[Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)]]> 20613470 565 Sarah J. Maas 1619630656 Erin 3 I can't even explain how much my heart aches after this book.

I don't really know where to begin or even what to say. Maybe it's because nothing happened I wanted to happen in it. Honestly, the whole thing felt like a HUGE filler that Maas wrote because she found out she could extend her contract to six books instead of just three. Seriously.

Five hundred pages full of fillers. Five. Hundred. Pages. I only enjoyed the last 36 pages of this book. That's really the only time I felt like anything actually happened.

Ten things I hated:

I love Chaol. So, as you can imagine, I pretty much HATED that he and Celaena weren't in any contact this entire damn book.
I hated what happened with Sorscha. I mean. Why?
I hated that it was 500 pages of pure filler and that I spent an entire day reading pages filled with self pity and unnecessary dragging out of situations.
I hate how Celaena still feels she can't be with Chaol for the STUPIDEST bloody reason!
I hate how Rowan changed from a kind of cocky jackass to a freaking puppy at the end of the book.
I hated Manon's story. I pretty much skipped it. Zzz...
I hate that the very last pages were the only ones that had my heart racing, especially because my heart rate was spiked for the entirety of Crown of Midnight.
I hate that Chaol took 500 pages to pick a side and is still iffy about Celaena because they're meant to be, dammit.
I hated what happened to Aedion. Dammit.
I hated how Maeve was so easily deterred and broke her blood bond with Rowan over a freaking ring. I mean...queen of evil...really?

I'm a little bit afraid of Queen of Shadows seeing as how in love with Crown of Midnight I was. I also have a feeling I'm not going to like the outcome of certain relationships.

The world already has a Game of Thrones and it's depressing and stupid, so please just have a happy ending every once in a while, Maas. You're my only hope.

Okay, first of all, I just want to say I would be lying if I didn't give Howard some credit: she has some BALLS to try and write about the Phantom. Huge ones. The size of hot air balloons.

But dude it JUST didn't work. Seriously. This book is LITERALLY Twilight. Cringy teenage insta-love and all.

Let us compare:

Twilight (2005)

"I caressed his cheek, delicately stroked his eyelid, the purple shadow in the hollow under his eye. I traced the shape of his perfect nose, and then, so carefully, his flawless lips."

Roseblood (2017)
"I take over, tracing the graceful curves of sinew and bone along his face then down his neck to his collarbone... he closes his eyes in rapturous beauty, long lashes fanned across sculpted cheekbones."

Like...SINEW...really??

When I read the synopsis of this book, I think my excitement blurred my expectations and I completely misunderstood what it was going to be about. I thought I was getting a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera. This is NOT a retelling. I repeat: this is not a retelling. It is a washed up, predictable and honestly very awkward YA sequel.

WHY...why would you write a sequel to one of the most precious, untouchable books in the history of time? My opinion on sequels to classic books has stood true since I was 13 and picked up one of the many sequels of Pride and Prejudice and just thought "Oh my God why is this a thing?".

It was as if one day A.G. Howard woke up one day and thought "The Phantom of the Opera is timeless representation of the arts. It was a haunting, magical book, an outstanding musical masterpiece of a play and it's even been adapted into a movie....but I think I need to put my two cents in."

Why? And since I'm asking the why questions..why in your right mind would you create the Phantom to be such an unlikeable, irritating and downright evil character? He definitely always blurred the lines between good and evil and left you unsure of his intentions but one thing was always certain: you felt such a deep remorse for his character and couldn't help falling in love with him yourself.

Howard spits on his image in this book and tries to recreate who he is with a teenage boy and some weird magic explanations that really made no sense and it just absolutely did not work. There were also multiple parts in the book that the Phantom was mentioned as "Erik" and "Erick" and now I understand why the Phantom hates people so much since they can't even spell his name consistently.

The concept of this book was a very cool one and I think it could have been executed properly had it not been a YA title and author. But I stand by my stubborn belief that The Phantom of the Opera is a masterpiece..and it does not need any sort of a sequel. Ever.]]>

Ever.

Heartless 18584855 Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.]]>

‘Off with his head."

MMMM...YAASS. That one line was the reason this book made a third star.

Marissa disappointed me this time. After every single one of her Lunar Chronicles books (except Stars Above, but I just like to pretend that book didn't happen) received a four-five star rating from me, I am very sad to say this one HARDLY pressed to a solid three stars.

I'm keeping this review short and sweet because quite frankly I believe I wasted enough time on this mostly boring and bland retelling of the Queen of Hearts.

Let me just put it to you this way: this is a book about a young girl who literally does everything she is told with absolutely no mind of her own and does nothing but groan about it. Then, when there comes a moment that literally all she needs to do is just keep it up and listen to what other people are telling her she needs to do...she decides she's going to randomly develop a brain of her own and go against literally everyones warnings

This is a class A dunce, folks.

I did NOT like Catherine for the entirety of the book. The only redeeming moment was when she FINALLY stepped into her role of the "evil" Queen of Hearts. The ending truly made this book. I'm not sure if we will have a happy ending with this series (if she's continuing it), but I do know that I don't think I even want one! ]]>

Enchantment 7973
The moment Ivan stumbled upon a clearing in the dense Carpathian forest, his life was forever changed. Atop a pedestal encircled by fallen leaves, the beautiful princess Katerina lay still as death. But beneath the foliage a malevolent presence stirred and sent the ten-year-old Ivan scrambling for the safety of Cousin Marek's farm.

Now, years later, Ivan is an American graduate student, engaged to be married. Yet he cannot forget that long-ago day in the forest--or convince himself it was merely a frightened boy's fantasy. Compelled to return to his native land, Ivan finds the clearing just as he left it.

This time he does not run. This time he awakens the beauty with a kiss . . . and steps into a world that vanished a thousand years ago.

A rich tapestry of clashing worlds and cultures, Enchantment is a powerfully original novel of a love and destiny that transcend centuries . . . and the dark force that stalks them across the ages.
