<![CDATA[The Murders in the Rue Morgue (C. Auguste Dupin, #1)]]> 3301759
Poe's amateur detective, C. Auguste Dupin, takes an interest in the murder in Paris of two women. It was terribly brutal but difficult to categorize; there appeared to be no robbery or sexual assault, no obvious reason for the crimes. The newspapers carried sensational headlines. Dupin gets involved because the man arrested for the crimes, Monsieur Le Bon, had previously done him a favour. It becomes a challenge to Dupin.

Get set for a step back in the history of detective fiction that leaves the impression that it was written just a short while ago.

Librarian's note: this entry is for the story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." It is the first of three in the author's Dupin series. Collections of the series, including those under this title, and other stories by the author, are located elsewhere on ŷ. Each of the Dupin stories can be found by searching ŷ for "a C. Parineeta 258529
Set in early twentieth century Kolkata, Parineeta (Espoused) is the unforgettable story of a child-woman s intense and bittersweet romance. Lalita, an orphaned girl who lives with her uncle, considers herself betrothed to Shekhar, her benefactor and guardian. After several failed attempts, Lalita finally gets the egotistical Shekhar to admit that he reciprocates her feelings. However, tensions erupt between Shekhar s prosperous father and Lalita s poor but principled uncle, and the situation is further complicated by the arrival on the scene of Girin, a mild-mannered and eligible bachelor, who is attracted to Lalita. The lovers world is turned upside down, and Shekhar and Lalita find themselves estranged. Years later, they meet again, and the story takes another unexpected turn...

Parineeta is a classic that has captured the imagination of generations of readers. This new translation, published to coincide with Vidhu Vinod Chopra s film, will delight Saratchandra s fans, as well as those who are not familiar with the writer s works.]]>

This work of fiction moved me so much that I couldn't believe that Puzo was capable of such versatility. The impressive story about the struggling mother and her indigent family members, each with their own magnificent stories about challenging family ties, never ceased to teach me about how endurance with loved ones at several life crises strengthens your inner self. Each character being so very detailed and intricate, turned out extremely satisfying and lovable to such extent that picking one as a favorite seemed just impossible.

Taking a risk to write about a book which doesn't include violence or themes of vengeance, menace or even ordinary crime, Puzo strived in delivering a masterpiece.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.

By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.

But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

Wuthering Heights 6185 You can find the redesigned cover of this edition HERE.

At the centre of this novel is the passionate love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff - recounted with such emotional intensity that a plain tale of the Yorkshire moors acquires the depth and simplicity of ancient tragedy.

This best-selling Norton Critical Edition is based on the 1847 first edition of the novel. For the Fourth Edition, the editor has collated the 1847 text with several modern editions and has corrected a number of variants, including accidentals. The text is accompanied by entirely new explanatory annotations.

New to the fourth Edition are twelve of Emily Bronte's letters regarding the publication of the 1847 edition of Wuthering Heights as well as the evolution of the 1850 edition, prose and poetry selections by the author, four reviews of the novel, and poetry selections by the author, four reviews of the novel, and Edward Chitham's insightful and informative chronology of the creative process behind the beloved work.

Five major critical interpretations of Wuthering Heights are included, three of them new to the Fourth Edition. A Stuart Daley considers the importance of chronology in the novel. J. Hillis Miller examines Wuthering Heights's problems of genre and critical reputation. Sandra M. Gilbert assesses the role of Victorian Christianity plays in the novel, while Martha Nussbaum traces the novel's romanticism. Finally, Lin Haire-Sargeant scrutinizes the role of Heathcliff in film adaptations of Wuthering Heights.

<![CDATA[How to Know God : The Soul's Journey Into the Mystery of Mysteries]]> 2272612 -- Deepak Chopra

The best-selling author of Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success has written his most ambitious and important work yet -- an exploration of the idea that everyone can have the direct experience of divinity. According to Chopra, the brain is hardwired to know God. The human nervous system has seven biological responses that correspond to seven levels of divine experience. These are shaped not by any one religion (they are shared by all), but by the brain's need to take an infinite, chaotic universe and find meaning in it. As we make sense of the swirling "quantum soup," we inevitably find the face of God. In this remarkable book Chopra shows us how. And along the way we delve into such mysteries as religious awakening, ecstasy, genius, telepathy, multiple personality, and clairvoyance -- all parts of the "mind field" that quantum physics discovered almost a hundred years ago. This invisible place, although it appears to be an empty void, is actually the womb of creation. Here God is our co-creator in the constant process of self-creation that is life itself. As we come to know God better, we gain direct access to healing, love, and miracles. How to Know God is Deepak Chopra's writing at its very best, an internationally celebrated blend of philosophy and science applied to the greatest subject of all. This is the quest each of us is on, whether we realize it or not. For, as Chopra writes, "God is our highest instinct to know ourselves." This book makes a dramatic and enduring contribution to that knowledge.]]>

566 Robert Ludlum 0752864327 Toufiq 4 excellent-reads
The book totally indulges you in the top-notch spy/action thriller experience.

It was unbelievably fascinating, the language was decent enough - not extremely polished and neither sickeningly bland. The dialogues were very effective and lurid, I was always awed by the infamous subconscious incantation from the book - "Cain is for Charlie and Delta is for Cain".

The writing style was fast paced with reasonably meaningful and promising sentences/dialogues. The vivid imageries spawning out of the lines, with the ever-gripping plot and thrilling chapters, forced me to think from the character's point of view and live his life - in this case, Jason Bourne, the insomniac assassin who is mortally injured, mysteriously wakes up one ominous stormy night in a boat amidst the ocean!

A brilliant story is incredibly compelling - a derailed protagonist, battles to find out his identity whilst desperately running from hitmen who want him dead for reasons unknown, implicates a stranger in his dangerous errands, only to unravel the deepest mysteries ever woven. This plot-line maybe formula oriented - character in trouble, character is to be praised for his perseverance, and in the end the character redeems by facing his nemesis; but the story definitely was unique and thank god not banal in any point.

The author deftly describes the way the main character discovers little by little about his mysterious past; he uses flashbacks, short-lived action sequences and much more. The book being full of excellent fight sequences and ploys to deceive one's prey, allows Bourne to "realize" that he has impressive combat skills and acute sense for survival at every stage and hurdle. Moreoever, his muscle-memory and instincts always save him from any traps, all the more startling him about his background.

Nearly everything about the story was perfect (except for Bourne's love-interest in my opinion). The plot was extremely interesting and the powerful, enigmatic characters kept playing in my mind thereby gradually building an atmosphere of intense suspense for which I just could't wait to flip the pages. As said before, reading this book felt like I was completely living in the author's imagination, racing from one city to another to plan my next move, uncovering the mysteries of my skills just to stay alive!]]>

*Spoiler Alert*

The Family 274942
In The Family, this singular novelist transports his readers back to 15th century Rome, and reveals to us the extravagance and intrigue of the Vatican as surely as he once revealed the secrets of the Mafia. At the story's center is Rodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI, a man whose lustful appetites were matched only by his consuming love of family. Surrounding him are his extraordinary children: simple, unloved Jofre; irascible, heartless Juan; beautiful, strong-willed Lucrezia; and passionate warrior Cesare, Machiavelli's friend and inspiration. Their stories constitute a symphony of human emotion and behavior, from pride to romance to jealousy to betrayal and murderous rage.

A labor of love two decades in the making, The Family marks the final triumph of one of the greatest storytellers of our time.]]>

review:
The novel wasn't one of Puzo's best efforts although not being his worst either. Following Puzo's signature theme of royalty, loyalty and of course, family, the story depicts the rise and fall of the infamous Borgia Family. Merely portraying their treacherous acts to govern and rule by sacrificing love and innocence, the book does not really deliver the flavors of terrorizing crime nor an intelligent story. Brilliantly sculptured characters however left a promising satisfaction which Puzo brilliantly delivers in all his books.

The Tell-Tale Heart 899492 A man confronts himself and an unknown listener with his desire to murder an old man.

In this classic psychological thriller, the reader will find many more questions than answers. Even though this is one of Poe's shortest stories, nevertheless it has become one of his most highest regarded works. It is a profound and, at times, ambiguous investigation of the paranoia that may lie within the depths of one man's mind...]]>

Utterly disappointed with this book, I feel indignant to have wasted my time reading this novel by Puzo. The plot fails to interest as it is composed of an extremely feeble base and filled with petty and unnecessary incidents which remain to be of no value to the story. Even the characters, both important and the insignificant, remain unsatisfactory and dislikable from the beginning. To add more to the woes neither the climax nor the style of writing exhibited meaning or any form of inspiration. With disdain I confess that the book turns out such a failure that I'd never reread it, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

291 William Shakespeare 074347757X Toufiq 4 excellent-reads
While the reason for this play may or may not have been to contemplate women rights and gender equality, nothing makes it anything less than an excellent read, perhaps a minute literary classic in my say!

First of all, notoriously famous for the dark comedy, this play in my opinion is the best Shakespearean Comedy. The play consisting of extremely comical, vivid and humorous energetic ploys never offered me a chance to put it down and stop reading.

From the beginning of the play the readers get an entertaining idea of how terrifying a shrew, the leading character Kate is because of her amusingly foul mouth and vicious temper. Pair that with an equally determined and witty leading male character, Petruchio, who employs comical methods to shape Kate, and you get a splendid comedy. The play proceeds with an interesting insight into how Kate gradually evolves into his devoted wife and a polite woman.

The characters and their dialogues fashion the utmost wit and brilliant excitement all through out the play. Every scene is composed of numerous hilarious and amusing acts that just grip the readers to continue being indulged in the entertaining story.

The play also stands out because of its unique structure. Most Shakespearean plays comprise of romance, banishment, and disguise as a key theme to the plot.
For instance, one never fails to identify the certain styles of Shakespeare; namely one method would be: Male characters in the beginning disguise themselves and they fall for the wrong women who were also disguised. However, everyone reconcile with their true one in the end after a series of farce incidents.
Another signature style would be: Groups of high ranked men and their king are banished to the forsaken islands or forests by a nemesis. Then the noble men and their king would regain power and get invited back in the end by the strange love marriage between the children of the king and his nemesis!

To a great relief this play consisted of none of those techniques which therefore was a remarkably fresh way of journeying through a wonderful Shakespeare comedy.]]>

I read this play when I was in the sixth grade and at that time I did not completely understand the meaning of "male ego" or "abusive relationships". As the message hidden in this play depicts that women of those times had to succumb dutifully to their "chauvinist" husbands, years later I came to realize how the society of that era looked down upon the uprising and independent women of all times.

While the reason for this play may or may not have been to contemplate women rights and gender equality, nothing makes it anything less than an excellent read, perhaps a minute literary classic in my say!

<![CDATA[Hercule Poirot: The Complete Short Stories]]> 538605
'My name is Hercule Poirot and I am probably the greatest detective in the world.' The dapper, moustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head, curious mannerisms and inordinate respect for his own 'little grey cells' has solved some of the most puzzling fictional crimes of the century. Appearing in Agatha Christie's very first novel in 1920 and her very last in 1975, Hercule Poirot became the most celebrated detective since Sherlock Holmes, appearing in 33 novels, a play, and these 51 short stories.

These short stories provide a feast for hardened Agatha Christie addicts as well as those who have grown to love the detective through his many film and television appearances. This edition also includes Poirot in "The Regatta Mystery, "an early version of an Agatha Christie story not published since 1936!

Some may dispute whether "all" is the correct word. Several Poirot short stories have earlier, alternate, or expanded versions, and we shouldn't forget the dozen or so not here; they were re-purposed into the 1927 novel "The Big Four." Others appeared under different titles. Most importantly, "Hercule Poirot The Complete Short Stories" will delight newcomers to Christie's famous detective, as well as those who just want to remember how good their read was the first time around.

The stories in order are: (1) The Affair at the Victory Ball, (2) The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan, (3) The King of Clubs, (4) The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim, (5) The Plymouth Express, (6) The Adventure of The Western Star, (7) The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor, (8) The Kidnapped Prime Minister, (9) The Million Dollar Bond Robbery, (10) The Adventure of the Cheap Flat, (11) The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge, (12) The Chocolate Box, (13) The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb, (14) The Veiled Lady, (15) The Adventure of Johnnie Waverly, (16) The Market Basing Mystery, (17) The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman, (18) The Case of the Missing Will, (19) The Incredible Theft, (20) The Adventure of the Clapham Cook, (21) The Lost Mine, (22) The Cornish Mystery, (23) The Double Clue, (24) The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, (25) The Lemesurier Inheritance, (26) The Under Dog, (27) Double Sin, (28) Wasps' Nest, (29) The Third-Floor Flat, (30) The Mystery of the Spanish Chest, (31) Dead Man's Mirror, (32) How Does Your Garden Grow? (33) Problem at Sea, (34) Triangle at Rhodes, (35) Murder in the Mews, (36) Yellow Iris, (37) The Dream, (38) The Labours of Hercules, the Foreword, (39) The Nemean Lion, (40) The Lernean Hydra, (41) The Arcadian Deer, (42) The Erymanthian Boar, (43) The Augean Stables, (44) The Stymphalean Birds, (45) The Cretan Bull, (46) The Horses of Diomedes, (47) The Girdle of Hyppolita, (48) The Flock of Geryon, (49) The Apples of the Hesperides, (50) The Capture of Cerberus, and (51) Four-and-Twenty Blackbirds.

Alice in Wonderland 13023 This is an adaptation. For the editions of the original book, see here .

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.]]>

The Diary of a Young Girl 48855
In 1942, with the Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, the Franks and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annexe of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly humorous, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

Possibly Dan Brown's least entertaining Sci-Fi thriller comprising a silly plot, this pre-Langdon novel is an epitome of the author's love for delivering A grade thrillers. Set in a futuristic world of advanced technology and computer viruses, the story delivers excitement by narrating the saga of how a disgruntled employee with his sly method, wanted to annihilate the computer responsible for US National Security. The story proceeds by explaining how the protagonist gradually saves the day with some help of course and in the process of doing so, discovers a startling plot twist in the end. As a fast paced and modest page-turner, this book had interesting and intelligent characters who showed acts of betrayal, treachery and also bravery. For a light read this sure is a good pick because Dan Brown excels at composing such movie-script styled stories which present readers with a puzzling story and involves cherishable characters who lead to an interesting and satisfying ending.

416 Mario Puzo 0345441702 Toufiq 0 fairly-good-books
The book being nothing exceptional but a painfully exasperating story about the bold Italian Outlaws and the typical Sicilian Mafia/Mob, makes me insolently demean this story because the plot turned out to be almost a mash-up and rip-off of Puzo's other notable books.

Moreover, after reading the book, scorned I was as a blacksmith without his tools, I was numb too since the novel had very little material. I recall the days when I almost gave up reading this book because I was tired of forcing myself to turn the pages.

Firstly, the feeble plot, as mentioned before turns out to be a brew of Puzo's other books, lacks originality and enthrallment, and is rather repetitive. It also focuses too much on the character development, so much that you are left with a sick feeling of boredom and weariness. The innumerable accounts of the characters' past are definitely a foundation of their role but with these characters Puzo actually overdid it, so much that you feel such elaborate illustrations were unnecessary. The characters were lush and deep but not captivating enough to make me dive into their lives.

The book might have flourished if it were made into two parts, because since the real story is so limited, Puzo could have glorified it by dividing it into two parts by focusing the drama on the first and the tragedy/thrills on the latter, but that's just how I feel.

Sadly, thriving on unwanted details and a vain story, this book also features folly and unintelligent writing. For example, the execution of the main character absolutely made no sense at all, the weak writing left readers in utter dismay and confusion such as, "Why kill him NOW?", "without a motive why would THAT person betray?", etc.

Moving on, the theme of the book is somewhat ambiguous yet the countless incidents of the story surely amplified aspects of Loyalty and Pride. And the message of the book might have been somewhat enlightening but I remain unsatisfied with this desultory tale of how two young innocent boys grew up to be bandits and embraced their fateful retribution.

Firstly, the writing is in first person which is really unlike Puzo. Secondly, I can't recall what the theme or message was behind this book. It was the story of a man who gambled all night and then the nights after that, and in doing so, he also narrated about his sexual encounters with a woman who worked there. Again, nothing worth investing time to find out about casinos or Las Vegas and the lifestyles of people surrounding that City.

The story had none of Puzo's prized elements, no violence, vengeance, murder, gangs, or the mafia deploying organised crime. Everything about the story, the incidents, the place and characters barely impress and even the ending left me thinking "Umm, OK.."

And that's what I'm trying to portray, the book being terribly shallow, gives me nothing to talk about it.]]>

The Fourth K 22031
President Francis Xavier Kennedy is elected to office, in large part, thanks to the legacy of his forebears good looks, privilege, wealth–and is the very embodiment of youthful optimism. Too soon, however, he is beaten down by the political process and, disabused of his ideals, he becomes a leader totally unlike what he has been before.

When his daughter becomes a pawn in a brutal terrorist plot, Kennedy, who has obsessively kept alive the memory of his uncles assassinations, activates all his power to retaliate in a series of violent measures. As the explosive events unfold, the world and those closest to him look on with both awe and horror.]]>
479 Mario Puzo 0345476735 Toufiq 0 fairly-good-books
Puzo puts out a childish duet between the protagonist and the antagonist in a manner found common in low budget soap operas. When the president declares his godly ruthless vengeance upon the terrorist right after his daughter is murdered, the idea portrays successfully that one's solid character can be easily corrupted when exposed to unbelievable torture. Therefore every man, be it a scholarly mind or a barbaric brute, is nothing but a fierce animal and his raw animalism is released when his patience is tested. The story carefully explains that even the most responsible men can't be in control of their emotions. Now that being the silly point of this book, the readers too are supposed to sympathize the president over his tearful misfortunes and not judge his rash revenge.

The story turned out quite stretched and did not scurry emotions within the readers; it was the characters which were a slight relief due to their believable intents but that too spurred mediocrity to a certain degree.

What was an endeavor was the invincible friendship and duality between the President and his right hand man, therefore signifying unshakable trust and thriving loyalty which Puzo never fails to deliver in his books. While some characters had apt depth, others received too much unwanted attention throughout the chapters.

The book's title gives away its conceivable ending and therefore the conclusion not being dramatic, shocking or intriguing, left a remark of contemptuous dissatisfaction among the readers.]]>

review:
Centering around the US Politics, the intelligent FBI, and the luxurious Middle East who aids international criminal activities, this plausible fiction rather delivers nothing concrete. A seemingly simple plot about the usual terrorist teams and numerous futile attempts of assassinating the most important man in the world, fails to be thrilling, exciting or at least captivating.

The book's title gives away its conceivable ending and therefore the conclusion not being dramatic, shocking or intriguing, left a remark of contemptuous dissatisfaction among the readers.

Animal Farm 7613
The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

One night, all the animals at Mr. Jones' Manor Farm assemble in a barn to hear old Major, a pig, describe a dream he had about a world where all animals live free from the tyranny of their human masters. Old Major dies soon after the meeting, but the animals inspired by his philosophy of Animalism plot a rebellion against Jones.

Two pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, prove themselves important figures and planners of this dangerous enterprise. When Jones forgets to feed the animals, the revolution occurs, and Jones and his men are chased off the farm. Manor Farm is renamed Animal Farm, and the Seven Commandments of Animalism are painted on the barn wall...]]>

The Appeal 1248179 The Appeal make the grade? And will it appeal to Grisham admirers -- or disappoint them?

The stakes in the novel's plot are high: corporate crime on the largest scale. The duo of lawyers at the centre of the narrative are Mary and Wes Grace, who succeed in a multimillion dollar case against a chemical company, who have polluted a town with dumped toxic waste. A slew of agonising deaths have followed this, but lawyers for the chemical company appeal, and a variety of legal shenanigans are employed -- and it is certainly not clear which way the scales of justice will be finally balanced.

As ever with Grisham, the mechanics of plotting are key, and the characterisation is functional rather than detailed. But it is (as always) more than capable of keeping the reader totally engaged. Given John Grisham's much-publicised conversion to born-again Christianity, it's intriguing to note here the implicit criticism of the moral majority's religious values, but that is hardly central to the enterprise. What counts is the storytelling, and while the writing is as straightforward and uncomplicated as ever, few readers will put down The Appeal once they have allowed it to exert its grip on upon them. --Barry Forshaw
