review:
Deleuze is by far one of the most brilliant scholar and philosopher of his time. In this book, which is written in a both poetic and easy way, the author does a literary critic of Sacher-Masoch works but he also goes much further , analyzing subjects dealing with arts, law, literature, ideologies and human sexuality. In this last topic, he brings some very interesting new theories and thesis, breaking down with traditional Freudian and Krafft-ebingian theories (special positive arguments for the 'denegation-suspense' hypothesis, the 'women-executioner' and the 'non unity/similarity principle' ). Therefore, Deleuze's work aims to show the geniality of Masoch books which is quite frequently misunderstood or simply ignored. A must read for anyone interested in good literary criticism.

A good book specially for beginers. I guess Green's only fault is that she makes the book too "descriptive". That makes it a little bit boring if you already know the Early Irish and Welsh texts and sagas.

A frightening and powerful tale of the loss of freedom and identity in a chillingly believable totalitarian world, V for Vendetta stands as one of the highest achievements of the comics medium and a defining work for creators Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

Set in an imagined future England that has given itself over to fascism, this groundbreaking story captures both the suffocating nature of life in an authoritarian police state and the redemptive power of the human spirit which rebels against it. Crafted with sterling clarity and intelligence, V for Vendetta brings an unequaled depth of characterization and verisimilitude to its unflinching account of oppression and resistance.]]>

While those in power take steps to neutralize the threat, police pursue the mystery of V, unaware of the terrible truth that awaits them. Mere Anarchy 55382
Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics Getting Even, Without Feathers, and Side Effects, Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only answers the most profound questions of human existence but is the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling.

"I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe," he explains in a piece on physics called "Strung Out." In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Biggs, just to name a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ("Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to apprehend him") he is explosively funny.

In "This Nib for Hire," a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author"s book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: "Actually," the producer says, "I'd never seen a book remaindered in the kindling section before."]]>

<![CDATA[The Shape of Water (Inspector Montalbano, #1)]]> 163166 The Shape of Water is the first in Andrea Camilleri's wry, brilliantly compelling Sicilian crime series, featuring Inspector Montalbano.

The goats of Vig角ta once grazed on the trash-strewn site still known as the Pasture. Now local enterprise of a different sort flourishes: drug dealers and prostitutes of every flavour. But their discreet trade is upset when two employees of the Splendour Refuse Collection Company discover the body of engineer Silvio Luparello, one of the local movers and shakers, apparently deceased in flagrante at the Pasture. The coroner's verdict is death from natural causes - refreshingly unusual for Sicily.

But Inspector Salvo Montalbano, as honest as he is streetwise and as scathing to fools and villains as he is compassionate to their victims, is not ready to close the case - even though he's being pressured by Vig角ta's police chief, judge, and bishop.

Picking his way through a labyrinth of high-comedy corruption, delicious meals, vendetta firepower, and carefully planted false clues, Montalbano can be relied on, whatever the cost, to get to the heart of the matter.

The Shape of Water is followed by the second in this phenomenal series, The Terracotta Dog.

<![CDATA[The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Volume I]]> 10147
Volume I of The Complete Sherlock Holmes begins with Holmes's first appearance, A Study in Scarlet, a chilling murder novel complete with bloodstained walls and cryptic clues. This is followed by the baffling The Sign of Four, which introduces Holmes's cocaine problem and Watson's future wife. Volume I also includes the story collections The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and concludes with the tale "The Final Problem," in which Conan Doyle, tired of writing Holmes stories, kills off his famed sleuth.

<![CDATA[A Faint Cold Fear (Grant County, #3)]]> 21721 The third pulse-pounding novel in the Grant County series from New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter.

Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, Georgia, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body provides little in the way of clues -- and the college authorities are eager to avoid a scandal -- but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don't add up.

Two more suspicious suicides follow, and a young woman is brutally attacked. For Sara, the violence strikes far too close to home. And as Jeffrey pursues the sadistic killer, he discovers that ex-police detective Lena Adams, now a security guard on campus, may be in possession of crucial information. But, bruised and angered by her expulsion from the force, Lena seems to be barely capable of protecting herself, let alone saving the next victim...

<![CDATA[Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs]]> 94654 Coldness and Cruelty, Gilles Deleuze provides a rigorous and informed philosophical examination of the work of the late 19th-century German novelist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Deleuze's essay, certainly the most profound study yet produced on the relations between sadism and masochism, seeks to develop and explain Masoch's "peculiar way of 'desexualizing' love while at the same time sexualizing the entire history of humanity." He shows that masochism is something far more subtle and complex than the enjoyment of pain, that masochism has nothing to do with sadism; their worlds do not communicate, just as the genius of those who created them - Masoch and Sade - lie stylistically, philosophically, and politically poles a part. Venus in Furs, the most famous of all of Masoch's novels was written in 1870 and belongs to an unfinished cycle of works that Masoch entitled The Heritage of Cain. The cycle was to treat a series of themes including love, war, and death. The present work is about love. Although the entire constellation of symbols that has come to characterize the masochistic syndrome can be found here - fetishes, whips, disguises, fur-clad women, contracts, humiliations, punishment, and always the volatile presence of a terrible coldness - these do not eclipse the singular power of Masoch's eroticism.]]> 296 Gilles Deleuze 0942299558 Pedro 5 history-philosophy 4.06 1967 Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs

A must read for anyone interested in good literary criticism

Most of people start reading this book with different backgrounds: knowing Sade's works, after listening to Velvet Underground music, studying the psychology of masochism etc etc ... Well, in my case i just found it by accident and started reading it without knowing any of these other things. I think that this was pretty good for me since i had no idea about what to expect, or how the book would be like, and i quite liked it. Despite of the particularities that could make some more traditional or close-minded people shocked(like some dynamics or details about the author's Goddess x slave idealized relationship) the story itself is, somehow, very stimulating. One can easily find some random philosophical questions and even social critics in this book which makes the reading very interestiing.

<![CDATA[Beyond Celts, Germans & Scythians: Archaeology & Identity in Iron Age Europe]]> 478609 Who were the Iron Age peoples of Europe? Celts, Germans, Scythians: these are among the names that come to mind. But such names and the characteristics associated with them, come to us from outside observers - Greek and Roman writers - not from the native peoples themselves. To understand how late prehistoric groups constructed and expressed their identities, we need to examine the rich archaeological evidence left by the Iron Age Europeans themselves. Recent theoretical and methodological advances in anthropology, archaeology and history, together with results of archaeological research all over Europe, provide the basis for a new approach to the problem of the identities of Iron Age peoples. Peter Wells uses patterns of identity revealed in the archaeology to interpret the commentaries of Greek and Roman authors who conveyed their own perceptions of these non-literate groups. Finally, he examines ways in which Iron Age Europeans responded to the Greek and Roman representations of them. The result was an ever-changing mosaic of complex and dynamic identities among the diverse peoples of Late Iron Age Europe.

Dao De Jing 1229762 Tao Te Ching, the esoteric but infinitely practical book written most probably in the sixth century B.C. by Lao Tsu, has been translated more frequently than any work except the Bible. This translation of the Chinese classic, which was first published twenty-five years ago, has sold more copies than any of the others. It offers the essence of each word and makes Lao Tsu's teaching immediate and alive.

The philosophy of Lao Tsu is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it, for to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Nature provides everything without requiring payment or thanks, and also provides for all without discrimination〞therefore let us present the same face to everyone and treat all men as equals, however they may behave. If we watch carefully, we will see that work proceeds more quickly and easily if we stop "trying," if we stop putting in so much extra effort, if we stop looking for results. In the clarity of a still and open mind, truth will be reflected. We will come to appreciate the original meaning of the word "understand," which means "to stand under." We serve whatever or whoever stands before us, without any thought for ourselves. Te〞which may be translated as "virtue" or "strength"〞lies always in Tao, or" natural law. In other words: Simply be.]]>

<![CDATA[The Complete Sherlock Holmes: Volume II]]> 3586
The Complete Sherlock Holmes comprises four novels and fifty-six short stories revolving around the world*s most popular and influential fictional detective〞the eccentric, arrogant, and ingenious Sherlock Holmes. He and his trusted friend, Dr. Watson, step from Holmes*s comfortable quarters at 221b Baker Street into the swirling fog of Victorian London to combine detailed observation and vast knowledge with brilliant deduction. Inevitably, Holmes rescues the innocent, confounds the guilty, and solves the most perplexing puzzles known to literature.

Volume II of The Complete Sherlock Holmes begins with The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, tired of writing about Holmes, had killed him off at the end of ※The Final Problem,§ the last tale in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (found in Volume I of The Complete Sherlock Holmes). Public demand for new Holmes stories was so great, however, that Conan Doyle eventually resurrected him. The first story in The Return, ※The Adventure of the Empty House,§ features Conan Doyle*s infamously inventive explanation of how Holmes escaped what seemed like certain death.

This volume also includes two other collections of Holmes stories, His Last Bow and The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes; Conan Doyle*s final full-length Holmes novel, The Valley of Fear; a pair of parodies, ※The Field Bazaar§ and ※How Watson Learned the Trick§; and two essays about the ※private life§ of the beloved sleuth.]]>

<![CDATA[Absolution by Murder (Sister Fidelma, #1)]]> 706476
As the leading churchmen and women gather at the Synod of Whitby in 664AD to debate the rival merits of the Celtic and Roman Churches, tempers begin to fray. Conspirators plot an assassination, while mysterious, violent death stalks the shadowy cloisters of the Abbey of St Hilda. When the Abbess Etain, a leading speaker for the Celtic Church, is found murdered suspicion inevitably rests on the Roman faction.

Attending the Synod is Fidelma, of the community of St Brigid of Kildare. As an advocate of the Brehon Court, she is called on to investigate the murder with Brother Eadulf, of the Roman faction. However, the two are so unlike that their partnership is described as that of a wolf and a fox - but which is which?

More gruesome deaths follow and the friction among the clerics could end in civil war. Can the solution to the mysteries avert such a conflict?]]>

<![CDATA[Celtic Goddesses: Warriors, Virgins and Mothers]]> 1756566 Divine and semi-divine females abound in Welsh and Irish myths, often associated with themes of virginity and sexuality, promiscuity and destruction. The concept of partnership is a prominent aspect of Celtic religion and myth, and it is possible to trace evidence of the divine marriage in both European iconography and Irish myth. Interestingly, the female is sometimes the dominant partner.
Terrifying battle goddesses were invoked in times of war, often believed to change into raven-form as harbingers of death. A Mother Goddess was venerated, often in triple form, and supplicated for fertility of animals and crops. Goddesses were often linked with birds, dogs, bears, pigs and snakes all had their divine protectresses. The great Celtic horse-goddess Epona even had a Roman festival dedicated to her. The transition from polytheistic paganism to monotheistic Christianity in the Celtic west is examined in a final chapter.]]>

The Symposium 81779
In the course of a lively drinking party, a group of Athenian intellectuals exchange views on eros, or desire. From their conversation emerges a series of subtle reflections on gender roles, sex in society and the sublimation of basic human instincts. The discussion culminates in a radical challenge to conventional views by Plato's mentor, Socrates, who advocates transcendence through spiritual love. The Symposium is a deft interweaving of different viewpoints and ideas about the nature of love--as a response to beauty, a cosmic force, a motive for social action and as a means of ethical education.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. <![CDATA[Celtic Women: Women in Celtic Society and Literature]]> 942672 288 Peter Berresford Ellis 0802838081 Pedro 3 celtic-studies
However Ellis's work is full of problems. He gives constantly too much emphasis on some aspects and neglect other important ones, and I guess the biggest problem is that it seems that all the time the author wants to prove how Celtic women had a better status than any other women in Ancient and Medieval times. He makes hughes problematic generalisations and sometimes forget that the category of 'woman' is also a plural one and that the lifestyle of an aristocratic chief-wife or Queen is different from the rest of the women of the tribe.

Ellis narrative is great and the book is very easy reading and informative, but it misses a little bit of good scholar work and academic critical approach. ]]>

A good informative book about Celtic women. For sure Peter B. Ellis is able to present and treat this theme and bring 'celtic women' into discussion much better than other authors such as Jean Markale or M.Condren for example. The book is specially good if you don't know much about historical detail and is not familiar with the Ancient and Medieval sources.

<![CDATA[The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Stories, #1)]]> 68527
The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex (Alfred*s kingdom and the last territory in English hands) Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight and ready to take his place in the dreaded shield wall. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father*s land, the enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.

This thrilling adventure〞based on existing records of Bernard Cornwell*s ancestors〞depicts a time when law and order were ripped violently apart by a pagan assault on Christian England, an assault that came very close to destroying England.]]>

<![CDATA[Geography, Volume II: Books 3-5]]> 1475668
Strabo's historical work is lost, but his most important "Geography" in seventeen books has survived. After two introductory books, numbers 3 and 4 deal with Spain and Gaul, 5 and 6 with Italy and Sicily, 7 with north and east Europe, 8-10 with Greek lands, 11-14 with the main regions of Asia and with Asia Minor, 15 with India and Iran, 16 with Assyria, Babylonia, Syria, and Arabia, 17 with Egypt and Africa. In outline he follows the great mathematical geographer Eratosthenes, but adds general descriptions of separate countries including physical, political, and historical details. A sequel to his historical memoirs, "Geography" is planned apparently for public servants rather than students--hence the accounts of physical features and of natural products. On the mathematical side it is an invaluable source of information about Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, and Posidonius.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Strabo is in eight volumes.]]>

review:
This is the major work and most important thesis defended by Bachofen. In Das Mutterrecht the author support his idea that there was an archaic matriarchal state common to all ancient societies that was over took by the patriarchal state and that this fight between patriarchy and matriarchy is present in mythological backgrounds.
Even if modern academics from historian to archaeologists have proven that nothing like a Matriarchy existed in ancient societies like Greek, Roman, Celtic , Egyptian and others , Bachofen's book is worth reading and covers very interesting topics.

The Conquest of Gaul 592167 TRANSLATED BY S. A. HANDFORD WITH REVISIONS BY JANE GARDNER

The earliest eye-witness account of Britain and its inhabitants appears in these famous memoirs.

Between 58 and 50 BC Julius Caesar not only conquered almost the whole of modern France, Belgium and Switzerland, with parts of Holland and Germany, but also invaded Britain twice. It was partly as a piece of personal propaganda that he recorded his campaigns against the various Gallic tribes in Latin; nevertheless these simple, direct and lucid texts are a unique direct source on Gaul in that period and also the only narrative actually written by a great general of antiquity about his own campaigns.

Revised and updated by Jane Gardner, S. A. Handford's translation allows modern readers to grasp the full sense of Caesar's exciting account.]]>
