I didn't look at reviews til after I read this, but it seems like the failure mode of “whimsy�� is “twee��. It didn't cross the twee line for me, there were significant but not world-altering stakes, it was hilarious and it was visually beautiful in my head, and I really want to see a movie of it. I'm not usually a massive fan of grumpy/sunshine but that worked for me too. Cosy found-family is really my jam.
