Tales from the Perilous Realm 4653703 ‘The Hobbit, fully corrected and reset for this edition and all beautifully illustrated in pencil by the award-winning artist, Alan Lee.

The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are finally together in a volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for readers young and old.

Roverandom is a toy dog who, enchanted by a sand sorcerer, gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures.
Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but - having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant - is called upon to do battle when a dragon comes to town;
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells in verse of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls;
Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle who sets out to paint the perfect tree;
Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children.

This new collection is fully illustrated throughout by Oscar-winning artist, Alan Lee, who provides a wealth of pencil drawings to bring the stories to life as he did so memorably for The Hobbit and The Children of Húrin. Alan also provides an Afterword, in which he opens the door into illustrating Tolkien's world.

World-renowned Tolkien author and expert, Tom Shippey, takes the reader through the hidden links in the tales to Tolkien's Middle-earth in his Introduction, and recounts their history and themes.

Lastly, included as an appendix is Tolkien's most famous essay, "On Fairy-stories", in which he brilliantly discusses fairy-stories and their relationship to fantasy.

Taken together, this rich collection of new and unknown work from the author of The Children of Húrin will provide the reader with a fascinating journey into lands as wild and strange as Middle-earth.]]>

upon reentering mansfield park, without the prior romantic sentimentality as i had previously entered with, this book- which i must agree with other reviewers, is a FANTASTIC social commentary. the romantic play, however little, was great in the end. edmund is an idiot. and fanny ought to be firm in the injustice and unrighteous situation with the crawfishes. however the interplicity of the characters was quite a joy to read. and edmund coming to his senses was great!

the lessening of one star is on this account. that there was not detail on edmund proclaimation of love and of fannys either (especially considering all this time she is in love with him and was to endure it forever). this miss austen is the one fault. that at least give your audience of these two wonderously annoying and yet amusing characters their scene of love.

Twenty Years After (1845), the sequel to The Three Musketeers, is a supreme creation of suspense and heroic adventure.

Two decades have passed since the musketeers triumphed over Cardinal Richelieu and Milady. Time has weakened their resolve, and dispersed their loyalties. But treasons and stratagems still cry out for justice: civil war endangers the throne of France, while in England Cromwell threatens to send Charles I to the scaffold. Dumas brings his immortal quartet out of retirement to cross swords with time, the malevolence of men, and the forces of history. But their greatest test is a titanic struggle with the son of Milady, who wears the face of Evil.]]>

For Amanda Stockenberg, that place was Smugglers' Inn. The seaside inn had been a refuge for Amanda when she was sixteen, a place to find solace, to find herself...and to find love. She can't think of the inn now without remembering Dane Cutter. The then nineteen-year-old illegitimate son of the cook had taught her about love. She'd been ready to give up everything to be with him. But at the end of the summer he, it seemed, was not.

Now, ten years later, Amanda once again finds herself staying at Smugglers' Inn, this time for a corporate retreat. The event is her last chance to prove herself to her bosses, so she doesn't need any complications...like finding Dane Cutter still working at the inn. And still as dangerous to her equilibrium as ever. Because suddenly, Amanda isn't sure what she wants--the window office or the window room of a seaside inn. She has one week. Seven days to choose between achieving all her dreams...or reuniting with the man she never stopped loving.]]>

The Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete Hebrew Bible still preserved. It originally appeared in installments, from 1968 to 1976, with the first one-volume edition in 1977; it has since been reprinted many times. The text is a nearly exact copy of the Masoretic Text as recorded in the Leningrad Codex. The Masoretic notes are completely revised.
Included is a foreword in German, English, French, Spanish and Latin as well as an English and German key to the Latin words, abbreviations and other symbols in the critical apparatus.
Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) Compact Edition is identical in content to the standard edition (including the critical apparatus in Latin and the foreword in multiple languages); however, its size makes it exceptionally convenient for the student of Hebrew to carry and use. Vigorous, realistic and full of keen insight into human nature, The Spiritual Combat consists of short chapters based on the maxim that in the spiritual life one must either "fight or die". Fr. Scupoli shows the Christian how to combat his passions and vices, especially impurity and sloth, in order to arrive at victory.

Hester 6829259 Hester tells the story of the aging but powerful Catherine Vernon, and her conflict with the young and determined Hester, whose growing attachment to Edward, Catherine's favorite, spells disaster for all concerned.

Catherine Vernon, jilted in her youth, has risen to power in a man's world as head of the family bank. She thinks she sees through everyone and rules over a family of dependents with knowing cynicism. But there are two people in Redborough who resist her. One is Hester, a young relation with a personality as strong as Catherine's, and as determined to find a role for herself. The other is Edward, who Catherine treats like a son. Conflict between the young and the old is inevitable, and in its depiction of the complex relationships that develop between the three principal characters, Hester is a masterpiece of psychological realism. In exploring the difficulty of understanding human nature, it is also a compulsive story of financial and sexual risk-taking that inevitably results in a searing climax.

Margaret Oliphant is one of the great Victorian novelists, and this edition re-establishes her importance.

Well well well. This massive humongous whopper of a book series was absolutely F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C. .

The detective stories were absolutely engaging and sometimes freaked me out.

Sherlock Holmes is a man who has morals, who is not an idiot, quite intelligent and is quite humble (not about the money).
His friend Dr Watson matches as a suit because the pair are great characters for the detective industry. Both intelligent, have self mastery, serious and yet humorous at the same time. Really good friends these two.

I really enjoyed the books within this big book. I think my favourite set of stories come from the Adventure and memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and the story of the scarlet letter. They both were quite engaging but the latter was the most shocking. I think it is because the stories donot turn out how you think. What really happens in the crime is not what you suppose. And many of the stories are woe begotten love stories or love affairs or crazy irratic behaviour leading to the crime.

Arthur Conan Doyle really knew how to write. And be coherent within his stories (unlike this review). He knew how to link ideas and flow with the sway of the story without sounding off or contradictory.
I am thinking that perhaps Sherlock Holmes is much like his "creator" Doyle.

Anyhow these stories are old fashioned, logical, engaging, freaky at times and above all modest. I absolutely recommend this big novel. It contains all the collection of books and the stories therein and is great to read.

------------------

An example of the modesty of Sherlock is seen in the story called "the veiled lodger" featured within the casebook of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock hears the tone the woman is using (implying that she wants to kill herself) and Sherlock says the most incredible thing I did not expect him to say: "your life is not your own, keep your hands off it... the example of patient suffering is in itself the most precious of all lessons to an impatient world." The ending I will leave for you to read. Absolutely shocking and fantastic to read such morality and modesty in such a character. ]]>

The Lost Estate 983730 The Lost Estate is Robin Buss's translation of Henri Alain-Fournier's poignant study of lost love, Le Grand Meaulnes. This Penguin Classics edition also contains an introduction by Adam Gopnik.

When Meaulnes first arrives at the local school in Sologne, everyone is captivated by his good looks, daring and charisma. But when Meaulnes disappears for several days, and returns with tales of a strange party at a mysterious house - and his love for the beautiful girl hidden within it, Yvonne de Galais - his life has been changed forever. In his restless search for his Lost Estate and the happiness he found there, Meaulnes, observed by his loyal friend Francois, may risk losing everything he ever had. Poised between youthful admiration and adult resignation, Alain-Fournier's compelling narrator carries the reader through this evocative and unbearably poignant portrayal of desperate friendship and vanished adolescence.

Robin Buss's translation of Le Grand Meaulnes sensitively and accurately renders Alain-Fournier's poetically charged, expressive and deceptively simple style. In his introduction, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik discusses the life of Alain-Fournier, who was killed in the First World War after writing this, his only novel.

I read it for the first time when I was seventeen and loved every page. I find its depiction of a golden time and place just as poignant now as I did then

They killed off John Brooke. This review is dedicated to him.

I love Alcott. I love her writing style, plots and great fun.

I just got ticked off that out of all the characters, ALL THE CHARACTERS, JOHN BROOKE!!! The father of demi and daisy.

You know what, I was thinking. Why didnt alcott focus more of meg and john? I actually was more curious about their romance and their story than Jo and Mr Bhaer.

I fell instantly in love with John Brooke. Especially those brown eyes. And I have no idea why Alcott did not dwindle a little longer on those two as a couple.

To be quite frank, Jo and Bhaer's married relationship is not quite revealing through this book. I donot see how Jo could run the house ALL DAY and then awake during the night, constantly working and having no rest. No human person can do that. I mean, you will definitively have a mental break down from lack of bodily rest.

I mean Mr Bhaer has more time to himself than his own wife. He hardly does anything but teach really. I actually find him selfish. Like, his in his own study having quiet time. I mean what about your wife? Where is the relationship between him and his wife?

This really annoyed me.

Why did not Nan marry tommy? Why did not Dan marry?

I have no idea Alcott went the way she did, but she did. I mean. I loved this book. I just got annoyed by the killing off of Brooke. I mean for goodness sake! Old Lawrence outlived him!

Anyhow. I will return to Alcott.

When I finished reading this book, I was devastated. I find it quite hard to finish a good book. And this one I did. And did it tear me to pieces.

If one is a old fashioned, historical 19th century romantic, this is the book to read.

Let me take you reviewer readers through it.

Firstly, does Jane Austen know how to write. The language and style of writing captivates me- at times confuses me but then I catch on again- in that it is the 19th century English language.
The actual edition I read this book from was the Word Cloud Classics- which I absolutely love for the binding and cover of the book.

* I have to be side tracked here and say that it is true that we judge books by their covers. You see, I like books to have a particular cover on the outside. I know that the content is fantastic within, but the cover needs to reflect that. And so, I am not "dissing" the cover of this book but the one I read was great in appearance. Created an atmosphere with the book, if you know what I mean.
Just saying. Back to my point.

Jane Austen has this technique in writing. It takes your mind to the world she is depicting. She does not discuss too much on what is surrounding the characters. She incorporates it within the book perfectly when necessary.

Secondly, Elizabeth seems immature and annoying. This fact does not discredit the book. It will allow the reader to understand, as a heads up, that she is annoying and in fact needs to be slapped very hard across the face.

Thirdly, Mr Darcy. This man, I feel in love with. He is a depiction of a true gentleman. Not only is his mannerisms and the fact that he will do anything for Elizabeth truly characterise him. But the fact that HE WILL DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE FOR ELIZABETH. After he hears what Elizabeth thinks of him, he reforms himself for her. Not in the way that he entirely changes, but the things that affect Elizabeth are bettered. He is now second, i think, on my list of fictional eligible men.

Fourthly, Dialogue. The book had great dialogue. But sometimes I wish there was more. Much more.
I was, for some half of the time, urging LOUDLY- to myself of course- for them to get talking already! OR for him to make a move ALREADY!
It was agonising. However, the ending, (i will not give too much away but rather enough to satisfy those who are like me and like to know whether things will turn out good or crappy) makes up for the anticpation between the two characters.

Funnily enough, Jane was my favourite. Very wise and reasonable in her thinking. She did not jump to conclusions. On the contrary, Elizabeth did. But it just shows the characters of reality where we as individuals can do both or be one or the other. Dependable on the situations of life.

Conclusively, this book was great. It deserves five stars. It deserves 100 stars. Everything was great.

True, and utterly true, romantics. Pick THIS book UP!!! ]]>

This book. I have no words.

<![CDATA[On the Roman Pontiff: In Five Books (De Controversiis)]]> 30258668
-Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD

For the first time in history, St. Robert Bellarmine's work, De Romano Pontifice, On the Roman Pontiff, has been translated and made available in English!

In this Theological treatise St. Robert Bellarmine takes on Protestant as well as Greek Orthodox objections to the Papacy in five books. In the first, he argues that Christ established the Primacy of Peter by means of an Ecclesiastical Monarchy, which takes up subjects as diverse as: What is the best form of government? Why it is fitting that the Church's government should be a monarchy; Exegetical Commentary on the Lord's words in Matthew 16 and John 21, along with copious Patristic testimony.

In Book 2 is whether Peter has successors in the Ecclesiastical Monarchy, wherein Bellarmine defends the Church's position on the true history of Peter; that Peter truly went to Rome; that Peter was truly a Bishop there; that upon his death he was succeeded by men in the Ecclesiastical monarchy, as well as its proof from the Fathers, then through all the refutations, Bellarmine asks what would happen if the Pope were a heretic.

In book 3, Bellarmine shows the many contradictions and faulty reasoning used by the first Protestants in arguing that the Pope is Antichrist while also giving exposition to the authentic understanding of the passages of Scripture that speak of Antichrist. After presenting the testimony of Scripture and the Fathers on the signs that must precede Antichrist, Bellarmine shows how none of this agrees with the Roman Pontiff. He also refutes the fable of "Pope Joan."

In book 4, Bellarmine argues why the Pope is infallible when he defines a doctrine on faith and morals and proceeds to defend Popes whom Protestants and others argued had erred while defining faith. He continues to a discussion of law, and why it is not contrary to the Gospel for the Pope (or a Bishop over his diocese), to make laws that bind the faithful, refuting the teaching of John Calvin.

In book 5, Bellarmine takes up the question of the Popes' power in civil affairs. Protestants had argued that the Pope tyrannously usurped the rights of sovereigns and that they meant to rule the world directly in civil affairs, while some canonists overly attached to a more medieval view were of a similar persuasion on the positive side. He then proceeds to demonstrate that the Pope's temporal power is indirect and that he can intervene for the sake of the faith when excommunicating sovereigns, but not for political reasons. The protestants argued that a Bishop could not be a temporal prince and Bishop at the same time, which Bellarmine soundly refutes from Scripture and Tradition.

This first ever English translation also has many historical notes on terms, persons, Greek and Latin syntax and other things to aid the reader. The value of the work is not merely apologetic-Bellarmine's treatise also laid down insights into Catholic teaching that were foundational not only for later Theologians but even for Vatican I.]]>

<![CDATA[The Great Commentary of Cornelius A' Lapide (Set of 4)]]> 22065609
The dignity, usefulness, and majesty of Scripture are so great that it surpasses the books of all philosophers and theologians, both Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, as much as Divine surpasses human wisdom. For Scripture is the Word of God. It is the very utterance of God, by means of which God enunciates His wisdom to us, and points out to us the way to virtue, health, and eternal happiness. S. Augustine asserts that "Sacred Scripture is an Encyclopaedia of all the sciences.

<![CDATA[The Traditional Latin Mass Explained]]> 38918126 The spiritual vision of Dom Prosper Gueranger culminated in the primacy and centrality of the sacred liturgy, the opus Dei or work of God. He writes, “The liturgy is the highest and the holiest expression of the thought and intelligence of the Church, simply because it is carried out by the Church in direct communication with God, in confession, in prayer, and praise.

The Traditional Latin Mass Explained, a succinct and sublime presentation of the prayers and ceremonies of the Latin Mass, is the perfect complement to his magnum opus, The Liturgical Year. This short work delivers a surprisingly complete exposition of the theology and spirituality of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by way of commentary on the texts and gestures of the Tridentine Rite. In this way, beyond its author’s original intention, this gem of a book is capable of revealing to us anew the treasure we have always possessed in this magnificent liturgy, the tragedy of its near extinction in the period after the Second Vatican Council, and the immense blessing of its gradual return across the Catholic world. Consequently, as time goes on, we shall have not less but more and more reason to take up again the writings of Dom Gueranger, discovering in him, not a relic of the nineteenth century, but a prophet of the twenty-first.

<![CDATA[The Last Mass of Padre Pio: The Secret Soul of the Stigmatic Saint]]> 52235714 Alessandro Gnocchi 1937843696 Mary 3

Here's a simple review.

So this book is a great starter for those not entirely familiar with San Pio himself.

However, it is quite in simplistic format, quite short in its subchapters (in each chapter has various subheadings that don't last over a page to a page and a half. So these subheadings are what consist of each chapter - dedicated to various points).

It doesn't analyse further from what I have already read from "Padre Pio: man of hope" by Renzo Allegri. Now that book is FANTASTIC and I gave it a five star rating. It discusses quite intimately, knowingly and assuredly with great character and depth Padre Pio and his whole life. The man who wrote THAT is actually an journalist who met with Pio and done research digging into the life of Pio himself.

So all that i can say is that that ^^^ (man of hope one to be clear) book is a book to read on pio that is captivating and informative and strengthening for ones spiritual life.

Quite frankly this book was a miss for me. And quite overly priced too I should add (33 dollars!!!!)

It didn't have anything to add or rather I felt was just cutting and pasting his letters in order to get to the point.

See this is the same problem I had with the 365 spiritual guidance from Pios letters to his spiritual children... they were cropped, readjusted and quite frankly perhaps even (i daresay it) reworded for the modern vatican two agenda. However. I am not saying this about this book. Actually it's point is quite the opposite (traditional mass!!)

Now I give this three stars because it truly does have authentic writings of Pio. I just find it tiresome to read short chapters within chapters that talk limited on one thing and then jump to the next.

Not my cup of tea after all. But maybe for you newcomers or persons who want their fantasy tickled or something.

What the heck! Page 50. There's an interview with something to do with Catholic 68 (italian abbreviation for 1968). The question put to Pio is where does Jesus kiss you (uhm say what? What type of question is this? I'm freaking out already) and Pios reply: He kisses me everywhere!!! (!!!!! What the BONKERS. SOMEBODY HELP! I DONT GET IT? there is no context other than that this is an interview. So what the heck is that supposed to mean.)

So i like Michael Beevers "Joan of Arc" book much much better. If you are looking for saintly depth which reveals the quality and depth of character regarding the person (i.e. Joan herself) is suggest Beevers book. It is quite good. I rated that one 4 or 5 stars (cannot remember)

Now this book is great as a scholarly work. And I mean SCHOLARLY. it is deep and analytical, judgemental and unbiased, factual and precise. It is correct and clear and does not sway left or right.

It pulls up all legitimate evidence and proves her case.

But. It isn't a book to learn off her conduct per se. Its too analytical, not giving anyone any room for spiritual insight.

So. this book really is a good book. I mean Lang went far and beyond and is considered one of the great authors who really wrote an accurate biography of Joan. But my oh my.

This book is intense and deep. And you'll learn LOTS regarding history and connection between things.

Now also to add - i agree with other reviews with the fact that I had to skip the first two chapters. Very analytical as it shows the objections to Joan and what people are saying about and against her. And thus Lang proves what the truth is.

I recommend for those who want authenticity. Scholar. Precision. And truth.

Just not for one who wants to be immersed in the really experience of her life through her character and etc.]]>

Eucharistic adoration according to Fr. Frederick Faber is “the queen of all devotions. Pope St. Pius X taught that it was the devotion “most profitable for our salvation. And St. Gemma Galgani treasured it as “the school of Paradise where one learns how to love.

So many popes and saints exhort us to spend time with our Eucharistic Lord. And the Manual for Eucharistic Adoration will enrich your hours with Him.

Part One, “Preparing for Eucharistic Adoration, answers these questions:

What is Eucharistic adoration, and why is it so important?
What does Scripture teach about this devotion?
What are the fruit of Eucharistic adoration?
How should I spend my time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament?

Part Two, “Aids in Eucharistic Adoration, provides these essential resources:

Teaching about the Eucharist from Scripture and Church documents
Scripture verses for adoration, wisdom and inspiration from saints especially devoted to our Eucharistic Lord
Prayers, Rosary meditations, reflections and hymns

Mother Teresa once said: “The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth. Take this great saint’s words to heart. <![CDATA[The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays]]> 92308
'To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness'

The Importance of Being Earnest is a glorious comedy of mistaken identity, which ridicules codes of propriety and etiquette. Manners and morality are also victims of Wilde's sharp wit in Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband, in which snobbery and hypocrisy are laid bare. In Salomé and A Florentine Tragedy, Wilde makes powerful use of historical settings to explore the complex relationship between sex and power. The range of these plays displays Wilde's delight in artifice, masks and disguises, and reveals the pretentions of the social world in which he himself played such a dazzling and precarious part.

Richard Allen Cave's introduction and notes discuss the themes of the plays and Wilde's innovative methods of staging. This edition includes the excised 'Gribsby' scene from The Importance of Being Earnest.]]>

The Secret Of The Rosary 1448527 The Secret of the Rosary- "It goes far beyond mere research. We might say that it contains everything that can be said about the Rosary, its content and form, its real worth, about the instruction necessary for its appreciation and use."

De Montfort calls the Rosary "the mystical rose tree of Jesus and Mary in life, death, and eternity." He says that the roses of your rosary will "never wilt or die, and they will be just as exquisite thousands of years from now as they are today."

He warns us against both the ignorant and scholars who regard the Rosary as something of little importance..."The Rosary is a priceless treasure which is inspired by God."

The Canterbury Tales 2696 The procession that crosses Chaucer's pages is as full of life and as richly textured as a medieval tapestry. The Knight, the Miller, the Friar, the Squire, the Prioress, the Wife of Bath, and others who make up the cast of characters -- including Chaucer himself -- are real people, with human emotions and weaknesses. When it is remembered that Chaucer wrote in English at a time when Latin was the standard literary language across western Europe, the magnitude of his achievement is even more remarkable. But Chaucer's genius needs no historical introduction; it bursts forth from every page of The Canterbury Tales.

If we trust the General Prologue, Chaucer intended that each pilgrim should tell two tales on the way to Canterbury and two tales on the way back. He never finished his enormous project and even the completed tales were not finally revised. Scholars are uncertain about the order of the tales. As the printing press had yet to be invented when Chaucer wrote his works, The Canterbury Tales has been passed down in several handwritten manuscripts.

<![CDATA[Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives]]> 16099176 The momentous third and final volume in the Pope’s international bestselling Jesus of Nazareth series, detailing how the stories of Jesus infancy and childhood are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago.

In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order “to make known the figure and message of Jesus. Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary. This is a story of longing and seeking, as demonstrated by the Magi searching for the redemption offered by the birth of a new king. It is a story of sacrifice and trusting completely in the wisdom of God as seen in the faith of Simeon, the just and devout man of Jerusalem, when he is in the presence of the Christ child. Ultimately, Jesus life and message is a story for today, one that speaks to the restlessness of the human heart searching for the sole truth which alone leads to profound joy.

JOSEPH RATZINGER, Pope Benedict XVI, born in 1927 in Germany, has been head of the Roman Catholic Church since April 2005. A prolific author, theologian, and university professor, Ratzinger served as an “expert at the Second Vatican Council, and was appointed in 1977 by Pope Paul VI to lead the German Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. In 1981, Pope John Paul II called him to Rome to head the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, where he served until his papal election.]]>

<![CDATA[The Fall of Gondolin (Middle-Earth Universe)]]> 39798828 The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwë, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom were numbered Húrin and Túrin Turambar.

Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled against their rule and fled to Middle-earth. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo’s desires and designs.

Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Túrin, the instrument of Ulmo’s designs. Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on the fearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he becomes great; he is wedded to Idril, Turgon’s daughter, and their son is Eärendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo.

At last comes the terrible ending. Morgoth learns through an act of supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape of Túrin and Idril, with the child Eärendel, looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their city. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Eärendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other sources.

Following his presentation of Beren and Lúthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same ‘history in sequence mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, it was ‘the first real story of this imaginary world and, together with Beren and Lúthien and The Children of Húrin, he regarded it as one of the three ‘Great Tales of the Elder Days.]]>

<![CDATA[The Biblical Basis For Purgatory]]> 8804168
In The Biblical Basis For Purgatory, author and apologist John Salza (Why Catholics Cannot Be Masons) offers the definitive scriptural explanation of this distinctively Catholic doctrine. Building on the teachings of Christ and St. Paul, he shows how the existence of a place of temporal punishment after death is not only a logical extension of what we know about the reality of sin and God's justice, but is also a supreme expression of God's love and mercy.

Although Purgatory is a place of mercy, its pains are real, and they are severe. This book does more than defend and explain Purgatory it provides a solid plan, drawn from the Church s perennial wisdom for conquering our sins by God s grace, while still on earth.

<![CDATA[You Shall Worship One God: The Mystery of Loving Sacrifice in Salvation History]]> 9188457 You Shall Worship One God. For only by recognizing the singular importance of worship, of making ourselves an offering of love before God, can we hope to fulfill the other commandments and develop a deep and lasting spiritual life.

Divine revelation, says Father Philippe, presents true worship to us in the form of sacrifice. The Old Testament stories in which goods-and lives-are offered to God, and the holocausts and oblations of the Jewish Temple, train God's people to express their love and fidelity and penitence through sacrifice. In so doing they also prefigure and prepare us for the Passion of Our Lord on Calvary, the perfect and lasting sacrifice that completes and gives meaning to all the others. Christ's offering of Himself is at root "a sacrifice of filial worship," glorifying the Father in the truest way possible and thereby effecting the greatest spiritual fruits.

You Shall Worship One God is a fascinating study of the development of sacrificial worship throughout salvation history, a rich meditation on the mystery of the Cross, and a necessary reminder to our busy world that the heart of Christianity is found not in service to our fellow man, but in recognizing the Lord's supreme majesty before all. Such worship is essential to salvation, says Father Philippe, for it "makes us die to ourselves in order to proclaim that God is first."

<![CDATA[The Mystery of Predestination: According to Scripture, the Church and St. Thomas Aquinas]]> 8157819
In The Mystery of Predestination, apologist and best-selling author John Salza (Why Catholic Cannot Be Masons) draws on Scripture, Tradition, and St. Thomas Aquinas' writings to uncover the fact that a proper Catholic understanding of predestination is interconnected with two other central mysteries: mankind's ability to choose freely to accept or reject God's saving Grace, and mankind's inability to accept that grace without first being moved by God from within.

God is the primary mover in salvation - it is He who chooses, seeks, and saves us. God may predestine His "elect" to heaven but never wills that anyone go to hell.

The Mystery of Predestination contains meticulously researched and clearly written answers for the serious Catholic who is confused by the Bible verses or Magisterial statements in favor of predestination, or who wants to defend Catholic truth against Calvinist error.]]>

<![CDATA[The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (English and Latin Edition)]]> 3770043
Our edition includes a commentary on the rubrics and ceremonial by "A Master of Novices" (which was first published in the early twentieth century), and also includes a description of the indulgences with which the recitation of the Little Office has been enriched by Holy Mother Church.

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a shorter form of the Divine Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It has long been the Church's daily liturgical prayer to Our Lady, and these hours of praise have been used by Priests, religious and the laity throughout the centuries. Lay people used to flock to the great Cathedrals to publicly recite The Little Office during the Middle Ages, and during the great persecution, when the practice of the Catholic Faith was illegal in Great Britain, Bishop Challoner commended The Little Office to his flock.

Through its psalms, antiphons, readings, responsorials, and prayers the Little Office stresses the role Our Lady played in salvation history, and how through her fiat the divine Word took flesh in her womb and achieved salvation for us all; and how Our Lord granted her the first fruits of the general resurrection in her holy and glorious assumption.

All Catholics are called to a consistent prayer life. For those who do not feel called to recite the Divine Office, but still wish to participate in the liturgical prayer of the Church, or for those who have a particular devotion to the holy Mother of God, there is no finer form of prayer than the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Features include:

Based on an edition published just after the Reform Act in 1850 (allowing English Catholics to openly practice the Faith).
English translation uses traditional language with scripture taken from Bishop Challoner's version of the Douay-Rheims Bible.
Fully updated to comply with the editio typica of the Breviary (1961) permitted by the Holy Father's Motu Proprio 'Summorum Pontificum'.
The first ever edition to include the complete Gregorian chants for the Little Office.

The Interior Castle 2327660
A masterpiece of spiritual literature, this sixteenth-century work was inspired by a mystical vision that came upon the revered St. Teresa of Avila, one of the most gifted and beloved religious figures in history. St. Teresa's vision was of a luminous crystal castle composed of seven chambers, or "mansions," each representing a different stage in the development of the soul.

In her most important and widely read book, St. Teresa describes how, upon entering the castle through prayer and meditation, the human spirit experiences humility, detachment, suffering, and, ultimately, self-knowledge, as it roams from room to room. As the soul progresses further toward the center of the castle, it comes closer to achieving ineffable and perfect peace, and, finally, a divine communion with God.

A set of rare and beautiful teachings for people of all faiths desirous of divine guidance, this meticulous modern translation by E. Allison Peers breathes contemporary life into a religious classic.]]>

Atticus Finch gives this advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of this classic novel - a black man charged with attacking a white girl. Through the eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Lee explores the issues of race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s with compassion and humor. <![CDATA[The Second Vatican Council: An Unwritten Story]]> 17337330
Vatican II opened fifty years ago on October 11, 1962. Since it ended in 1965, the council has been written of in countless books, articles, scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers all over the world. Things said and done since the council, in the name of the council and in opposition to it, have affected the lives of everyone living since that time.
As with any significant historical event, it is only after considerable time has elapsed that a fuller story of exactly what happened in those years before,
during, and after “the event can be engagingly told and wisely summarized. Professor de Mattei’s genius lies in the application of a lucid, literate,
and philosophical mind to thorough scholarly research and mountains of documentation. From this framework he has presented us with a story; a story of an event, a previously unwritten story that has been begging to be told for many years. This book will unfold for you the answer to the question, What happened at the Council?

“A work that is as erudite as it is relevant. I am certain that thanks to its rigorous historical-critical method it will convince a vast readership.

Confessions 3602116
Now, Henry Chadwick, an eminent scholar of early Christianity, has given us the first new English translation in thirty years of this classic spiritual journey. Chadwick renders the details of Augustine's conversion in clear, modern English. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. There are brilliant philosophical musings about Platonism and the nature of God, and touching portraits of Augustine's beloved mother, of St. Ambrose of Milan, and of other early Christians like Victorinus, who gave up a distinguished career as a rhetorician to adopt the orthodox faith. Augustine's concerns are often strikingly contemporary, yet his work contains many references and allusions that are easily understood only with background information about the ancient social and intellectual setting. To make The Confessions accessible to contemporary
readers, Chadwick provides the most complete and informative notes of any recent translation, and includes an introduction to establish the context.

The religious and philosophical value of The Confessions is unquestionable--now modern readers will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

Bleak House 43553900
“Jarndyce and Jarndyce is an infamous lawsuit that has been in process for generations. Nobody can remember exactly how the case started but many different individuals have found their fortunes caught up in it. Esther Summerson watches as her friends and neighbours are consumed by their hopes and disappointments with the proceedings. But while the intricate puzzles of the lawsuit are being debated by lawyers, other more dramatic mysteries are unfolding that involve heartbreak, lost children, blackmail and murder.

The fog and cold that permeate Bleak House mirror a Victorian England mired in spiritual insolvency. Dickens brought all his passion, brilliance, and narrative verve to this huge novel of lives entangled in a multi-generational lawsuit—and through it, he achieved, at age 41, a stature almost Shakespearean.]]>

Captain Federick Wentworth. What a man. He is the most realistic of men that austen writes about.

I really could not stand Lady Russell. She was annoying, intervening and an absolute suck up to Anne's father.

Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; & the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations.
In David Copperfield—the novel he described as his “favorite child”—Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant & enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy & comedy in equal measure.

The Way We Live Now 1171458 "Trollope did not write for posterity," observed Henry James. "He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket."

Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, The Way We Live Now is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and a bold indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. "I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age," Trollope said. His story concerns Augustus Melmotte, a French swindler and scoundrel, and his daughter, to whom Felix Carbury, adored son of the authoress Lady Carbury, is induced to propose marriage for the sake of securing a fortune. Trollope knew well the difficulties of dealing with editors, publishers, reviewers, and the public; his portrait of Lady Carbury, impetuous, unprincipled, and unswervingly devoted to her own self-promotion, is one of his finest satirical achievements.

His picture of late nineteenth century England is of a society on the verge of moral bankruptcy, where the traditional virtues of Tory squirearchy, represented by Roger Carbury, prove to be no match for the financial genius of Augustus Melmotte. In The Way We Live Now Trollope combines his talents as a portraitist and his skills as a storyteller to give us life as it was lived more than a hundred years ago.]]>

Well. Hum. Hmm..

I am wavering with this book. It is important, first, to note that this book fills in certain gaps by including more tales that are featured within the Silmarillion.

These unfinished tales include stories from the first second and third age of middle earth. It is imperative that anyone who reads this FIRST reads the Silmarillion, and before that have read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

Now having gotten this all off my chest.

I absolutely loved the story of the fall of Gondolin. With tuor and meeting the ocean god and meeting the messenger and going to the gates of Gondolin and all the 7 gates, etc etc.

But then, the stories of the Childen of Hurin stressed me out. When you read the almost entire story featured within the Silmarillion, you, at that time, become shocked and astonished and perplexed and probably traumatized but that is that. Because the Silmarillion is a history of Middle Earth etc. etc going into order.

But darn. I have to go through AALLL that trauma again!? I mean Tolkien. This story really is whack! Especially since the reader KNOWS what is going to happen, from previous knowledge and from just reading it itself (dramatic irony), it is a horrendous experience. So spoiler here. I mean I already know that Turin marries his sister and she him without they even knowing because of the curse of morgorth which is really the evilly devised plan with that darn dragon.

Now. If that wasn't enough. The story of the mariners wife, was a mixed one for me as well.

You see the problem isn't Tolkiens writing style or anything as such. But its the darn content which is yet again, in this instance, is irritating.

I found in turns in taking the side of the mariners wife and then in turn the mariner. You have to read it to find out. But the short of the long is that he is the kings son of numenor, heir to the throne, loves the ocean and sea. Goes frequently. Falls in love. But girl knows that she has to either fight the sea who has hold of him or she will be lost. And guess who wins THAT one.

Sigh.

Then. You get to galadriel and celeborn and man. Now it's getting boring.

So the gist of the matter is this. This book is MUCH MUCH MORE denser than the Silmarillion.

I really enjoyed the Silmarillion. And did not put it down. But this one. This one distressed me considering especially the children of hurin story. I really found it overwhelming and what not

So. This book does indeed follow from the Silmarillion. So it is important to read after that book. But good luck to you all. Because this one was good in its way and yet. Oppressive, woeful and depressing in turns.

I am now finished with Tolkien until I meet him again God willing In the fall of Gondolin. And thats it for me. Because, .... I THINK I have had enough now.]]>

Review to come on this... and man oh man, and boy oh boy is it going to be mixed.

Well. Hum.

John Henry Newman C.O., also referred to as Cardinal Newman, John Henry Cardinal Newman, and Blessed John Henry Newman, was a Catholic cardinal and theologian who was a very important figure in the religious history of England in the 19th century. He was known nationally by the mid-1830s.Originally an evangelical Oxford University academic and priest in the Church of England, Newman then became drawn to the high-church tradition of Anglicanism. He became known as a leader of, and an able polemicist for, the Oxford Movement, an influential and controversial grouping of Anglicans who wished to return to the Church of England many Catholic beliefs and liturgical rituals from before the English Reformation.
