This is a very impressive story about the very divergent but almost similar fates of two very different brothers. One is a sex-crazed school teacher named Bruno, the other a molecular scientist who's for all intents and purposes asexual. They share the same mother but different fathers. Their lives are riddled with similar misfortune; death, trauma, unrequited love and abject loneliness in the backdrop of the seventies sexual revolution. But each in their own trite way is trying to be better and just falling an inch short. Michel Houellebecq writes with such clarity and nuance and easy pacing that this book is a breeze to read. He interweaves his sardonic tone with memoir-style journalistic sketches of known scientists to lend the narrative credibility. This is well done across board. The characters are distinct and well-rounded, even the later love interests who are tourists in the story. At heart, this is an inordinately depressing book, but it's also a very impressive read.

This is the only Michel Houellebecq I’ve read that left me a little underwhelmed. It started off strong but the ending just didn’t do it for me. TBH I checked out after the book became a police procedural investigating the writers death. I’ve been stuck here for the last month and only finished it today - which to be honest I mostly skimmed: something I very rarely do. I wish MH had stuck to exploring Jed’s relationship with his father or with Olga.

BoneHunters is a masterpiece in pacing. Very well told, never lags and wraps up really beautifully. Chapter 7 alone!

Because these books are so massive, I always take time in between them to read much smaller books, but I don't think I'll do that. I'll jump right into Reaper's Gale (even though I'm not really that keen on revisiting the Tiste Edur & Rhulad) but anything to get to Toll the Hounds faster.

Another great novel. This series is steadily becoming my favourite Fantasy series ever, if not already.

As corny as it sounds my favourite story arc in this whole collection is the Sisters of Mercy. though technically this isn’t a story arc, it’s a one issue story, it’s a worthy conclusion to all the arcs that preceded it. starting from Inferno, Come To Judgement & Naglfar. It’s great seeing Lucifer redeem himself with Elaine Belloc, even though we have been warned this isn’t necessarily a virtue but a point of pride they he doesn’t want to be owed. Great all round collection.

Saga keeps getting better and better. This volume, despite the massive jump in time, doesn't lose any of its narrative tension. If anything it ramps it up, and doesn't suffer us the agony of a less than necessary exposition dump. The character arcs are well realised, the pace strong and most importantly, the cliffhanger brings in such a wonderfully complex complication for the latter volumes to solve.

There are short stories and then there are short short stories. I don’t like the latter. I also don’t like that most of these stories kind of hold the ambiguity tone for most of the story and then just end abruptly IMO. I don’t mind the abrupt endings but I need a little finality and closure. Some of these just don’t have it. So I can’t really sink my teeth into them. Irrespective, it’s Carver we’re talking about. He’s a master short story writer. That shines through in each and every one of these stories.

The last pages could've been cut out entirely and the story would've been better for it. At least that cliffhanger would've worked better than that Thessaly ending. A lot of people won't like this because it seems like nothing much is happening, but I'd argue that nothing much should. The Corinthian's story is supposed to be understated and for the most part it works on that level. The exposition and backstories are interesting enough, Madison Flynn as a character also works. IMO the writer gets in his own way, trying to introduce all these subplots that he can't tie up or at least explore enough to create the intrigue necessary to peak reader interest.
All in all, a lot of promise. I'll be reading Vol 2 when I get my hands on it.

I've never really been a fan of vampires. I don't even read them anymore. The only vampire books I actually liked were Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Anything else after that feels derivative. The only merit with this collection, is that the setting is original, it's take on vampires isn't. Besides the protagonist, Joshua York, what a pushover. Have never read anything where the protagonist was such a passive character, I never felt anything for him, and Damon Julien, the antagonist, there's not enough of him to instill such pacifism in York, or his other subjects. Cap'n Abner seemed like the story's saving grace, but even he was handicapped by York's pacifism. If it wasn't for the setting and the excitement of the boats and their racing along the river, this would've been a one star. The Cover Art though, was cool.
