<![CDATA[Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo]]> 23613 Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl are two poems by an unknown author written in about 1400. Sir Gawain is a romance, a fairy-tale for adults, full of life and colour; but it is also much more than this, being at the same time a powerful moral tale which examines religious and social values.

Pearl is apparently an elegy on the death of a child, a poem pervaded with a sense of great personal loss: but, like Gawain it is also a sophisticated and moving debate on much less tangible matters.

Sir Orfeo is a slighter romance, belonging to an earlier and different tradition. It was a special favourite of Tolkien's. The three translations represent the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the originals.]]>

This is an exceedingly important book. It is a truly radical reformulation of ethics away from principle based and into a type of ethical system that is closer to what philosophers such as Nell Noddings have called "The Ethics of Caring." Yet, it provides a stable base to keep such a relative system of ethics from descending into the dangers of total cultural relativism. If I could make all people read one book, this would be one of my main candidates.

This is a fantastic book and helped me gain an even deeper appreciation of Tolkien's work. Especially helpful are the linguistic discussions, since I do not know Anglo-Saxon, but Tolkien clearly used this knowledge in the creation of his fiction. Also, Verlyn Flieger's analysis of Gollum as both a humanoid and a dragon like monster is compelling, as is her demonstration that Aragorn and Frodo are both epic and fairy tale heroes, but whose patterns cross and reveal and strengthen each other. It is a really excellent dissertation and I was so happy to read it.

The Mystical Qabalah 211724 An occult classic and a Dion Fortune bestseller of strongly growing interest.

Fortune was one of the first to bring this “secret tradition to a wider audience with her clear and comprehensive exploration of the Qabalah tradition. The Mystical Qabalah remains a classic in its clarity, linking the broad elements of Jewish traditional thought—probably going back to the Babylonian captivity and beyond—with both Eastern and Western philosophy and later Christian insights.

The Qabalah could be described as a confidential Judaic explanation of the paradox of “the Many and the One”—the complexity and diversity within a monotheistic unity. Whereas the Old Testament outlines the social and psychological development of a tightly knit “chosen group culture, the supplementary Qabalah provides a detailed plan of the infrastructure behind the creative evolutionary process.

The Mystical Qabalah devotes a chapter to each of the ten schematic “God-names, the qualities or Sephiroth which focus on the principal archetypes behind evolving human activity: the Spiritual Source; the principles of Force and Form; Love and Justice; the Integrative principle or the Christ Force; Aesthetics and Logic; the dynamics of the Psyche; and, finally, the Manifestation of life on Earth in a physical body.]]>

<![CDATA[Plant Spirit Shamanism: Traditional Techniques for Healing the Soul]]> 316858
Shows how shamans heal using their knowledge of plant spirits as well as the plant’s “medical properties

Explores the core methods of plant shamanism--soul retrieval, spirit extraction, and sin eating--and includes techniques for connecting with plant spirits

Includes extensive field interviews with master shamans of all traditions

In Plant Spirit Shamanism , Ross Heaven and Howard G. Charing explore the use of one of the major allies of shamans for healing, seeing, dreaming, and empowerment--plant spirits. After observing great similarities in the use of plants among shamans throughout the world, they discovered the reason behind these similarities: Rather than dealing with the “medical properties of the plants or specific healing techniques, shamans commune with the spirits of the plants themselves.

From their years of in-depth shamanic work in the Amazon, Haiti, and Europe, including extensive field interviews with master shamans, Heaven and Charing present the core methods of plant shamanism used in healing rituals the world over: soul retrieval, spirit extraction, sin eating, and the Amazonian tradition of pusanga (love medicine). They explain the techniques shamans use to establish connections to plant spirits and provide practical exercises as well as a directory of traditional Amazonian and Caribbean healing plants and their common North American equivalents so readers can ex-plore the world of plant spirits and make allies of their own.]]>

The Forest Lord (Fane, #1) 936682 From bestselling author Susan Krinard comes a passionate, richly textured story of a powerful Fane whose one hope for love turns out to be the very woman he has vowed to destroy...

After a night of heated passion six years ago, Eden Bradwell made the shattering discovery that the man she was about to marry was no mortal. He was a monster, a woodlands guardian spirit named Lord Hern who needed an heir to end the exile that had been imposed upon him. Devastated by his deception, Eden fled Hartsmere and wed another.

In a deep sleep for the last five years, Hern, the Forest Lord, has been informed that Eden—the woman he'd courted all those years ago and who had shunned his true form—has returned to Hartsmere, along with the boy he'd been told was dead. Vowing to steal back his son—and wreak vengeance upon the woman who betrayed him—Hern assumes the identity of a servant named Hartley Shaw. But with each moment he spends with the elegant woman and his beautiful son, his heart begins to cast off the bands of iron that has bound it—and he becomes devoted to finding something that will redeem the woman he has come to love.]]>

review:
I was really surprised by this book. It is, in many ways, a romance novel. That is its official genre..not a genre I have fondness for. HOWEVER, the man in the novel is a faery...not a little winged thing, but the type of faery of the faery traditions. That part was really well researched and gave the novel a good plot and made it really interesting and compelling for me. Also, it helped me understand some issues in the faery tradition that are more powerfully portrayed in this medium than in more scholarly texts. I don't think the bits about Tir-na-nog are right...but I think some of the other is quite inspired.

This omnibus includes some of the best Macleod weird tales. "The Washer of the Ford" is a winnower of souls; "The Harping of Cravetheen" is one of the most grotesque heroic fantasies ever written; "The Dan-nan-ron" regards the musical power to control the moods & will of others; "Green Branches" is a tale of a murdered brother's ghostly return; "Sin-Eater" regards Celtic magic; and many other great tales. A Scottish poet and man of letters, William Sharp (1855 - 1905) wrote a series of well-regarded novels representative of the "Celtic Twilight" school popularized by William Butler Yeats under the nom-de-plume Fiona Macleod, a pseudonym that Sharp never publicly acknowledged. Sharp even composed a fictional biography of Macleod for publication in "Who's Who" and exchanged correspondence with such notables as George Meredith, Robert L. Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, and Dante G. Rossetti, sometimes as William Sharp, and sometimes as Fiona Macleod. In part two of this memoir, compiled by Sharp's wife from his diaries and letters, the story of his dual-identity is made public and explained for the first time.]]> 460 Fiona Macleod 1410106128 Gwyndyllyn 5 faery 4.08 1896 The Sin Eater, The Washer of the Ford and Other Legendary Moralities

Hodson is one of the main clairvoyants from the Theosophical tradition. His work on the devic kingdoms is really good and his insights are interesting. I especially find his comments on the Kingdom of Pan interesting as well as his reflections on what was happening during certain lectures. I need to compare what he says to the more traditional faerie traditions, though. I'm still trying to reconcile Theosophical teachings on this topic with the traditional, especially the Celtic, faerie traditions.

I recently re-read part of this book [2008] in preparation for a lecture. This is an excellent treatise on the various concepts of love, mostly tracing from the Greek through Christian theology. It is an interesting and thoughtful piece with a special emphasis on the important role of philia - friendship - in the Good. It also contains an important discussion about the problems that arise from vocation replacing friendship as our primary form of self-identification.

The Well Worn Path 462338
Although there are many divination decks that are designed for Pagans, they still tend to rely on the symbolism of the Kabalah or other spiritual systems. Now that changes forever Grimassi and Taylor, with artist Mickie Mueller, have created a divination deck for Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans.

Because this is not just another Tarot, a special full-sized book is included with the deck. It shows how each of the deck's forty cards tell part of a story that reveals the meaning and symbolism of the cards. This makes learning them easy You'll also discover the divinatory meaning of each card. The spreads described in the book are also Pagan oriented, and are focused around the images of a cauldron, a crossroads, and a pentagram.

The Well Worn Path is also far more than just a divination deck. The book includes instructions for how to perform Solitary Pagan rituals. The only tools you need are the cards of the deck. You can literally perform a ritual anywhere, anytime, with nothing more than these cards.

The book also reveals the Pagan spiritual teaching of each card, making this the first deck that can be used as a set of "flash cards" for learning Pagan spirituality and traditions.

These cards, with the book, are a complete system. But unlike other decks, it is also an expandable system. You can add their second deck, The Hidden Path, to this deck, using them together or individually. A must for all Pagans.]]>

<![CDATA[Ogam: The Celtic Oracle of the Trees: Understanding, Casting, and Interpreting the Ancient Druidic Alphabet]]> 816522 Describes the symbolism and mythology of the 20 "tree letters" and their magical correspondences.

Includes instructions on how to make your own Ogam divination sticks, cast the oracle, and perceive omens.

Provides historical background and bibliographic references to the Druidic mythology ruling this 1,500-year-old oracle.

The ancient Ogam alphabet is a magical and mysterious script, the Celtic equivalent of the runes that can teach us about our fate and future. Named after woodland trees, Ogam's 20 "tree letters" all have unique wisdom to impart that is linked to figures and themes from Celtic mythology.

The author addresses three major areas in this book: Ogamlore, the history of this 1500-year-old oracle of the Celtic Druids; Ogamfews, the meaning of the individual tree letters, their magic, characteristics, folklore, and related stories; and Ogamcasting, the practical art of Ogam divination, which includes spreads, castings, and how to create your own Ogam set. With these tools of ancient Celtic wisdom, readers will receive insights and guidance on how to maneuver through life's questions and challenges.

This is one of the main books on using Ogam / Ogham. It contains some tree lore and is basically good. It also gives some good background information on the development of Ogham and Druidism. It uses the Beth/Luis/Nion system and includes the four treasures as additions. I don't use the treasures in my practice and stick with just the 20 sacred trees of the grove.

This is a fantastic book with a lot of tree lore. It is not just divination. One of the things that I like about it is that it is focused on getting you to relate to the trees. On the other hand, there are a few times where it feels kind of like the meaning of the trees is being made to fit a particular linear progression through the grove. I would recommend it as a strong book, though.
