Edited by award-winning author Kristina Wright, who is married to a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy,For the Love of a Soldieris filled with sexy, romantic stories by some of the top authors in the erotic romance genre. Cat Johnson, Victoria Janssen, Lucy Felthouse, Sidney Bristol, and 12 other talented writers reflect on the lives, loves, and sacrifices of men and women in uniform and answer the provocative question: What would you do for the love of a soldier?

As editor Kristina Wright writes in her introduction, "When I married my sailor many years ago...the message was clear: duty to military service comes before duty to marriage. Moments. Hours. Days. Occasionally, weeks... That’s how romances with military lovers are measured—in the smallest of increments, because no time together is ever guaranteed." The result is red-hot reunions and no-holds-barred passion in the precious time that is shared.

Praise for Duty and Desire:

"Wright, herself a Navy wife, assembles 18 red-hot tales of men and women in uniform that range from WWII-era Russia to modern-day Afghanistan. While celebrating the valor, not to mention hotness, of those who serve their country, this anthology commendably covers darker issues, including post-traumatic stress syndrome and serious injuries, and love of all kinds, both straight and gay . . . This touching and realistic lineup is highly recommended." —Publishers Weekly

Editor Kristina Wright presents a heartfelt and thought provoking collection. For the Love of a Solider, military erotic romance, features sixteen stories of passion, longing and romance entwined with steamy erotic encounters. Reflecting the challenges of long distance romance for military personnel and their loved ones, the talented authors featured in this anthology bring stories from a variety of settings and from across time too. From Victoria Janssen’s The Aid Station, 1916, to present day stories like Lucy Felthouse’s unexpected reunion story, Failure to Launch, every heart wrenching and joyous reunion is perfectly captured for the reader. Much recommended.

Lessons and Lovers 17662466
What happens when a perfectly civilized sexual arrangement turns into a minefield of turbulent emotion?

Wealthy widow Hettie Miller misses her dead husband terribly, but is still beset by a gnawing physical desire. Lonely and confused, she turns to Starr, her late husband’s personal assistant, who discreetly supplies an after dark solution. At night, he comes to her bed and thrills her with intense, breath-taking sex, even though by day, their employer/employee relationship is scrupulously formal and hands off.

But Starr loves Hettie. He’s loved her since the first time he ever met her, but until now, he’s always managed to conceal it beneath a mask of immaculate manners and rigidly controlled reserve.

During a summer getaway at her secluded country mansion, it finally dawns on Hettie that her feelings for Starr are far more than simply carnal, and the parameters of their relationship start to change

This short novel is approximately 50,000 words long and was previously published by Ellora’s Cave.

Author’s note: LESSONS AND LOVERS is an escapist erotic fantasy. If the characters existed in the real world, they would always use condoms.]]>

I've always been a fighter,
Even before I knew it was in my blood.
I fought the demons of my past.
I fought for my life.
I fought for the future I wanted.

Growing up in a foster home, after my father killed my mother,
I fought for who I was,
Who I could become.

And now, it's what I do, what I am.
My career is in the ring, taking down every opponent I face,
Every enemy who threatens me.
I fight.

But now, I've got the biggest fight of my life,
Fighting for her, the one I want,
The one I can't have.

She'll be mine, even if I go down for the count,

In a moment of dire peril, all of Taqla s secrets are stripped bare her fears, her sorcery and, worst of all, her love for Rafiq. Yet the princess s life hangs in the balance, and there is no running away or turning back. Even though passion may yet betray them all...

Scary monsters and creepy ruins in the desert check. Pagan gods that demand blood-sacrifices double check. A handsome hero who looks good in a robe and even better out of it oh yeah. Check, check and check. That s worth a heroine dropping a veil or two.]]>

I'm a big fan, just love Janine Ashbless's writing style and her stories. This one is especially recommended if you enjoy fantasy reads set in ancient worlds, (think Arabian Nights.) It's a delight. Sorcery in ancient Arabia with romance elements, it's a real page turner and I gobbled the story up, loved every moment of it.

A charming medieval romance, heart warming and entertaining, well written and historically evocative. A Knight's Enchantment is set in the West Country at the time of the Knights Templar. It features an unusual heroine, an alchemist, and a gorgeous knight who is as sensitive as he is strong. When they meet, Hugh and Joanna are both dedicated to liberating members of their family from the clutches of a corrupt man. Their romance is cleverly woven into their ongoing adventure. I read it in one long sitting on a rainy day and enjoyed every moment of the unfolding plot!

Far From Perfect 10407233 Enduring passion, turbulent emotions, and an engagement of convenience

At age twenty, Anna Felgate rid herself of her unwanted virginity with the one man she adored—Nick Lisitano, long-time family friend and legendary lover. But that one taste of passion branded her soul for all time—and still casts a long shadow, four celibate years later.

Their single night of matchless lovemaking left Nick racked with remorse for taking advantage of Anna’s innocence. Thanks to his parents stormy marriage, he’s sworn off commitment, but believes Anna deserves deep, enduring love, not a temporary liaison.

In the intervening years, they’ve managed to keep a cordial distance, but when a crisis in Nick’s family brings them together again, Anna is shocked by Nick’s daring plan to cheer up his dangerously ill father—a temporary façade of an engagement. Against her better judgment, she agrees to it, fully aware of the emotional minefield yawning before her.

As if destiny has been waiting for them to touch once again, their volcanic mutual attraction reignites, threatening to burn the terms of their pragmatic bargain to ashes. Each begins to wonder privately if their passion can become permanent—or whether it will crumble under the weight of past sins and present secrets

Warning: This book contains a red-hot ’n sexy blond Italian businessman with the face of an angel, the body of a god and a caring but carefully shielded heart. He enjoys fast cars, fast living and slow, sumptuous lovemaking, and his “cure for the heroine’s headache makes it well worth faking another!

This is an intriguing short story by an established and talented writer of erotic fiction. Woe in Kabukicho focuses on a relationship between a British woman and a man she meets in a Japanese host bar. It’s a delicious dip into Japanese culture, and the writer has a knack of capturing the experience of being in a Japanese city through vivid, sensuous imagery, which only makes me wish it was longer. (Though the author's note tells me the male protagonist features in another book, so I'll be looking out for that one.) The steamy eroticism of the story is given weight and poignancy in the denouement of the story. A lovely short read that has stayed with me.

ONDINE was my first longer work by this author. I'm wow-ed by this story. It’s so unique and engaging, and unlike anything I've read before. Hard to classify, it straddles genres erotic fiction, romance, women's fiction—with the kind of resonance you would find in work by a writer such as Anäis Nin.

The protagonist is a young Canadian artist who is commissioned by a wealthy hotelier. As she meets various members of the Drinkwater family she uncovers secrets from their past—secrets which will influence the destiny of everyone in the present. The author cleverly tells us a story within a story within a story, a complex structure but done with sophistication, weaving a compelling tale. The legacy of Ondine, a beautiful ballerina, is at the heart of the tale, and what strikes me most is how the author shows us how Ondine's tale influences everyone involved, forging a powerful sense of desire and destiny throughout. The author doesn't shy away from the looking at the darker side of human nature while portraying her character's most uplifting and heartfelt moments too. Much enjoyed! She quickly shows us how the music world can be alluring, yet brittle edged and tough, all at the same time.

Kara is already embroiled in an edgy affair with her guitarist, Tam, when an old flame and now head of a record company enters the scene. Passion and conflict abound! I became deliciously entangled in Kara’s life as I read. Filled with tension and conflict -- and wildly erotic -- this story will have you fogging up your windows. The glam, gritty music scene makes THE NEW RAKES a unique read in the erotica catalogue.

An immensely enjoyable contemporary paranormal romance that draws on both Cornish and Irish mythology. The magical and the everyday are brought together wonderfully in the story, and I can only admire Helen’s talent in that department. If you love paranormal romance you have to check it out. The cover of AMOUROUS WOMAN promises a sexy read. The book is that, and so much more. Donna George Storey is a gifted storyteller. Her voice is both lyrical and immediate. When I met the protagonist, Lydia, and her affair with all things Japanese began, I knew I wasn't going to be able to put this book down. I never had a clue where she was taking me next but I was right there with her, every step of the way. Rich with sensual detail, humour, and emotional complexity, AMOUROUS WOMAN is both a sensual and cultural journey. Highly recommended.

Our protagonist, Eugenia Sharpe, used to be a famous singer, but she’s hit rock bottom. As the novel opens she has nothing. She’s standing in the ruins of a relationship to her music producer, a man who she has just discovered has been seeing other women on the side.

Returning to her old friends and the street scene, Eugenia (Genie) has to face up to how much she has lost both in terms of her recent relationship and the glitzy lifestyle it afforded her, and what she walked away from before that time. But before Genie can begin to pull herself up from rock bottom, she digs herself that little bit deeper down the spiral, because that’s what we do when we’re hurt and trying to find our way.

As I was reading this novel I thought to myself: this is the real Sex and the City. I felt as if I had lived Genie’s tough days in New York, because the streets and the people were so real and vivid in my senses. I wanted Genie to survive, to pull through and shine like the brightest star again, and she does, but there's no triumph for Genie without initial hardship.

Marilyn Jaye Lewis is one of the few writers who can pull off this type of novel. As an author she doesn’t shy away from issues of gender and sexuality, the realities of abuse, racism and poverty. She shows us the seedy underbelly of the city as well as its luxurious and privileged side.

The book is intensely erotic with scorching sex scenes. It’s shocking and raw in places. It’s also warm and funny and sad and deeply emotional. It’s about destruction and redemption, friendship and desire, love and hate, pain and pleasure. It's also a powerful romance. All of these things make Freak Parade an unforgettable read.

BROKEN, Megan Hart. Megan Hart is an exceptional writer, she turned a difficult subject into something believable that draws on our deepest emotions. I confess I had to take a break from reading this one, about four chapters in. Not because it was bad because it was too good, and often it was too close to the bone. The protagonist has a disabled husband and I found that angle incredibly moving. This was such a poignant read--sexy, romantic, yet filled with heart crushing pain and anguish. This wasn’t an easy read for me, but it was incredibly memorable. Megan Hart has a huge career opening out in front of her, she's a superb writer.

But embarrassment turned to excitement when he urged her to continue, then began to touch her intimately. It was only the smallest hint of what she’d witnessed on the tape, but she knew she had to have more...much more!]]>

Early on in the book it reminded me of one of my favourite films, Betty Blue, and it also reminded me of Anais Nin (although I hasten to add it is very sexy throughout, but this is not erotica, nor is it romance.) AFTER BREATHLESS is about a 19 year old British student studying in France in 1969, and it's a must read for fans of French film, as I am. Janey, the protagonist, has an affair with an older French man, Georges, because he reminds her of Jean Paul Belmondo in "Breathless". The book reads, in part, like a homage. Georges is compelling, but shadowy. Right from the start we know he has a double life. The story is told in flashback from 20 years on. Janey is forced to confront the ghost of her past, when she sees her old lover on TV. Told in first person, the tale comes together in a compelling jigsaw, the pieces all finally slotting into place.

I had a rip-roaring time delving into James Lear's THE BACK PASSAGE (blatant innuendo entirely appropriate to the book. :) Anyone out there who enjoys explicit man-on-man erotic stories has a real treat in store with this book. Set in the 1920’s, the plot is an Agatha Christie-esque murder hunt, written with heaps of humour and panache. The hero, an American amateur sleuth, elbows his way through English culture, class and manners with wry zeal, and shags his way from clue to clue in the most outrageous fashion. On one level, the book brought to mind a favoured read of my twenties, Evelyn Waugh’s VILE BODIES. On another, it was a hilarious sex romp with enough innuendo to fill a good few Carry On film scripts. In the midst of this was a truly compelling murder hunt.

Gripping, seat-squirmingly sexy, and thoroughly charming too, I enjoyed every page of THE BACK PASSAGE and recommend it highly. Kudos to James Lear, and to Cleis Press for signing this superbly filthy queer extravaganza of a novel.

As the story progresses and The Painted Doll slowly removes the layers of her mask for us, we find out her story and the reasons why she’s had to take on a new identity and hide. I don’t want to say too much and spoil the plot, but The Painted Doll is on the run from some very bad people. Most importantly she has had to leave and hide in order to protect her lesbian lover from those very bad people. At several times I found it was not an easy read, but it would not let me go. The novel is compelling, gritty, erotic, and at its centre lies an intense love story.

M. Christian is an author who straddles genres with apparent ease, as well as writing with literary panache. In this novel (and in his previous works) he plays with the recurring themes of sexuality, gender, and identity, questioning them by setting them at odds with what we know and understand. PAINTED DOLL resonates. It will stay with you. ]]>

PAINTED DOLL is set in an eerie future world -- the type of world that always gets under my skin and unnerves me, where things are both similar to what we know but also not of our experience, so that the vivid images we encounter tease along our perception uneasily. In this future world we encounter the story of The Painted Doll, a woman who works as a dominatrix in order to hide a secret past and her true identity.

As soon as I picked up HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT I knew it was a winner. The plot grabbed me straightaway and wouldn’t let go. The pacing is terrific, the dialogue snappy and believable, and above all the storyline and romance are hot, edgy, and exciting. All the ingredients for a great paranormal romance.

In Too Deep 3525382 304 Portia Da Costa 0352341971 Saskia 5
I adored this story! Portia’s novels always have a a locked-in kind of romantic eroticism that seduces the reader, and IN TOO DEEP is a particularly good example of this. The story maintains a really tight focus on a developing relationship, which makes it a totally compelling read. Once you start a novel that has that quality, it gets very hard to put it down.

What impresses me whenever I read Portia’s work is that her work is highly erotic throughout the story and at the very same time it’s charting the growth in the relationship. With IN TOO DEEP, this means exploring the relationship from a very raunchy, almost dangerous set up, through desire, need, passion, emotional enrichment to the deep dark point and beyond. It’s her talent of binding it all up together whilst also remaining erotic through out that is (for me) the key to Portia’s talent.

IN TOO DEEP is a first person story and it works well for the storyline, with the mystery male protag expressing himself in letters and online chat. Only a few writers can do 1st person well over a full-length erotic novel, and this one is a great example. IN TOO DEEP is also full of witty descriptions and humorous, often laugh-out-loud moments. Portia has got a great sense of humour and I love that she’s letting it rip! :) Another of her skills is portraying the well-rounded, down to earth and realistic character. Her characters are totally engaging. Treat yourself to this lusty librarians love story and you won’t be disappointed!]]>

And wretched is what Duchess Camille feels living with the cruel and debauched duke. But that soon turns to desperation when she learns her lecherous husband is plotting to have her killed to make way for a more nubile and fertile companion. Knowing she cannot sit idly by and wait for death, she flees into the night, taking with her her own young lover--the stable hand Henri--and her most loyal servants.

With a mind to finding refuge with Maxime, her first love who years ago ignited her sexuality, Camille and her servants take cover in brothels along the way and succumb to the physical delights on offer, sating their longings and fueling jealousies with one another. But the duke's men are not far behind, and Camille knows they must press on, hoping against hope that the man who has every reason to turn her away will remember the fervent passion that once coursed between them....]]>

Every erotic scenario you can imagine is portrayed here -- this is a big book! With a colourful cast and the sense of never being quite sure what was going to happen next, it kept me wondering. The campy sense of humour and comedy of manners angle also made it an intellectually entertaining read. I particularly enjoyed Henri's grounded sense of humour as he reflects on the crazy things that happen around him. As the story unfolds the fantasy world comes more richly to life. The characters and the eroticism also become more emotionally deep and complicated as they progress along their journey.

I recommend THE DUCHESS, but with the proviso that you don’t go into it expecting genre conventions to be observed. In fact I’m willing to bet that this novel will feature on reading lists in years to come because it defies convention and plays with our expectations in such a tongue-in-cheek way.]]>

Victoria Janssen's novel, THE DUCHESS, HER MAID, THE GROOM, AND THEIR LOVER, is an unusual read. This one doesn’t fit easily into genre classification, which will be problematic for some readers. To my mind the novel is closer to a comedy of manners than anything else. It satirises the society it is set in, as well as our own society and our genre expectations. It is erotic, but with a literary edge. It is also a historical fantasy, but the fantasy angle is not immediately apparent. The story also defies genre expectations by giving us a much older heroine who is borne to a high place, and her lover who is a lowly groom half her age. It is Henri, the groom, who is doe-eyed and falling in love here, and we feel for him the way we might feel for the maid-heroine who falls in love with the powerful Lord-hero in a traditional historical romance. He is also the Eliza Doolittle of the story. The author plays with this reversal throughout. Camille even refers to her increasing desire for erotic encounters as being akin to a man’s midlife crisis. It is Camille who has to be tough and make decisions that are ruled by the head more than the heart.

The Curewife 6192598 224 Claire-Marie Watson 0954407547 Saskia 5 research
The story tells the life of a curewife, a Scottish woman who was ultimately condemned for witchcraft. The author has woven her story around what little is known of Grissel Jaffray, a real woman who was actually condemned, but whose life is a mystery. The book is meticulously researched and rich in historic detail. Highly recommended for lovers of great historical fiction.

Trivia: I noticed on the Amazon blurb the book is described as having a parallel narrative, the story of a modern day New England character, a descendent. This is on both the UK and USA Amazon sites, but my version of the book only had the historical tale. I don’t know if there are different versions (it doesn't look that way) or if this is something the publisher had hoped for. I believe the book I read was the version that won the Dundee Book Prize, not sure if the other one will appear or is perhaps a related follow up, or just didn’t happen. (Add it to the list of great mysteries of the publishing world!) Either way, I’m longing for more from this author. Claire-Marie Watson, please write more!

Thin Air 428424
Dex is the front man of a successful band, and appears to have the perfect rock star life with his journalist partner, Jay. But Jay’s existence is shattered by Dex’s sudden disappearance. The mystery is never solved, and Dex is never found: alive or dead. Some years later, after Jay has got her life back together, strange events begin to unfold that suggest that Dex is still around. While it gradually becomes clear to Jay that there is more to the mystery than even she thought possible, malign forces begin to close in on her with the apparent intent of keeping the truth behind Dex’s disappearance forever hidden.

Jay can only follow the clues where they lead her, and that is into territory beyond normal human perception. In the bizarre town of Lestholme, she comes upon a community of the lost, people whose lives have been ruined by media attention, and it is in this surreal place that Jay must penetrate to the heart of the mystery, and discover what really happened to the man she loves, who vanished into thin air.

Capturing the ambience of the music scene of the 90s, Thin Air is one of Storm’s best-loved novels.]]>
