Then again, how often does an assassin live long enough to enjoy her retirement? In this line of work, you either get lucky or you get dead. And since I destroyed my nemesis Mab Monroe a few weeks ago, all of Ashland's lowlifes are gunning to make a name for themselves by taking out the lethal Spider--me, Gin Blanco. So I'm leaving behind my beloved barbecue joint and heading south with my baby sister, Bria, to cool my heels in a swanky beach town. Call it a weekend of fun in the sun. But when a powerful vampire with deadly elemental magic threatens an old friend of Bria's, it looks like I'll have to dig my silverstone knives out of my suitcase after all. Complicating matters further is the reappearance of Detective Donovan Caine, my old lover. But Donovan is the least of my problems. Because this time, the danger is hot on my trail, and not even my elemental Ice and Stone magic may be enough to save me from getting buried in the sand--permanently.

337 Brigid Kemmerer 075828005X Shera (Book Whispers) 2
That said I enjoyed it. To me it was a fun read, I liked the idea of a YA version of Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series. Elemental does well with the idea that I never thought that it was a rip off of said series. The writing was pretty fun and I enjoyed all of the brothers, and added hottie. The brothers have a very interesting dynamic to them and I look forward to each of their books, oh and the hottie AKA Hunter.

What I didn't like was the overall plot. Gosh is was so obvious that I felt like I should have just put the book down because I knew exactly what was going to be “revealed and la-dee-dah. However, I kept reading because it looked like Becca—oh, and let me get to that mess in moment—and Chris were the leads telling the story, but Hunter entered as the new hot transfer student and it seemed like he had a real chance with Becca. Of course his “plot twist meant drama that I'd usually say dump the guy for. The problem was the majority of the book evolves around Hunter and Becca dating. Even with Chris telling part of the story he felt like a third wheel and not part of the main romance. Even the ending was so, eh. Eh.

It didn't help that I loathed Becca. Loathed. Not disliked, loathed. Dear authors making a nice and empathetic character does not mean you need to make them feel like blank slates. Becca felt like a telling character, you know the author is telling me she's supposed to be really brave and all this. Oh, and the blushing. I'm a blusher, but I don't freaking blush like that!! I'd pass out. Over heat and probably kill myself. I will give props to Kemmerer for addressing the subject of sexual pressure among teens. For how a girl can blame herself and simply want the whole mess to just disappear. However, what I don't get is if you're afraid of going to a party because your ex might rape you in front of everyone (and that's only her 5th worry, hate to know what the other top 4 are) don't effing go to the party! Oh, and no matter how kind you are do not wander off alone no matter how safe it looks.

Becca-Becca-Becca! You dumb girl. She put the whole too stupid to live thing into the light. She gets mad at the wrong people. If something traumatic happens and your passive and just taking the kicks, I understand. However, Becca would have these moments to show readers how strong she really was, but she was being aggressive to the wrong people. Which I get in a way, but most of the time it's a game as to what really happened with Becca and she's dumb enough that I really started to wonder . . . if she even knew what happened. Or if it was like a forced kiss gone wrong and or something mild blown out of proportion. That's how bad she was.

Beside the cast of brothers being really cool and my enjoyment of Hunter, I will say I was really disappointed in the lack of Chris. Honestly this felt more like Hunter's book, only he didn't have narration time. And no it's not a spoiler, we all know how these books work! The flip happens and Chris gets the girl, only I didn't give a fudge. Ya know it's gonna happen, and sadly both love interests are underdeveloped. Becca's best friend Quinn even got on my nerves and I'm worried about the book she'll have as she's pretty uncaring, an over the top drama queen, and a bitch—no I didn't think she was very “spunky just mean.

Back to that plot. Storm is a really cool concept with the Elemental universe, like I said I'd been waiting for a YA title to do this idea. Yet the plot felt like someone's connect the dots on how to write a book. Within the first 30 pages, once all the elements are introduced—and even before those elements are added—I was all “oh, this is going to happen and then they'll go with this whole schpeel and try to do this silly plot twist. And yeah, I was write on. If you're one of those people who can anticipate plots and know where a story is going this is one of those books.

Overall with the predictable A to B plot, with an unshocking twist tossed in, and a lead I loathed, it's puzzling as to why I enjoyed this book. Especially since the subject of sexual harassment, sexual pressures, and rape were such . . . props in the story. It was insulting. Especially since it was supposed to be a huge part of this book. Either go all the way, or go home! Please do not tip toe around subjects like this. And don't . . ugh. The world is interesting, but underdeveloped. The writing is nothing to bedazzled over. And besides the brothers and Hunter, the other characters and generic and cut outs. Oh, the brothers and Hunter are cut outs/generic characters too. Maybe it's the potential. Yes, I will be looking into the rest of the books. Let's hope the next ones buck up.

Sexual Content: Sexual humor and some dark sexual content. Nothing over the top though, the kids will live. Though I don’t have a drug content, but white out on nails . . . pretty sure that’s how kids in my grade got high. Why wasn’t that ever addressed? Or was the Kemmerer just unaware, or thought it was normal to add it . . .

2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out.

But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead.

Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too.

The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling . . . or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead. . . .]]>

Gin doesn't fall prey to sex hang-ups, judging others (how can she do that after all she's done and lived through), she's actually witty, and despite her legendary status as the Spider she is human. Not quite to the degree of us normal non-assassin types, but that's the true charm. Because despite all of her badassery she is human, she's relatable, and I adore how Estep has realized Gin.

From the get go Gin has been so real and a character I respect. Which is funny considering she's a despicable assassin. The thing is her codes and rules are what set her apart. Especially since she does still have a heart. And since Fletcher's death she's slowly becoming even more alive. Which may or may not make her stronger in her show down with Mab. (But I think having more to live for and protect is what makes Gin amazing.) This is Gin's hero journey and I love it. Especially because it's accompanied by Gin just taking out the villains in good old fashion blood baths. Which only highlights how human she is by worrying about love and how things will turn out once those loved ones find out who she truly is as the Spider. Because she can't take that back and she won't.

Now let's get back to her stone cold heart that's waking up. Tangled Threads made me extremely nervous on how the yummy Owen Grayson would be handled and Gin's little sister Bria. Gin might be tough but she got her self in a bad way with Detective Asshole (Donovan Caine) and had her heart broken. More than she'd like to let on. So things started off a little rocky. Then Owend and Gin started earning one another. It sounds tacky, but Owen and Gin are my new favorite couple. They're relationship is real and I don't feel like it's just a trope to make fans squee.

That said I loved how everything else played out in Tangled Threads. Obviously Mab has to handle her Spider issue and what better way to kill an assassin than with another assassin. Elektra was amazing! Talk about despicable killers to show the other side of the coin. It's interesting getting all of these extra glimpses of Mab, especially when interacting with her hired assassin.

Bria is a very interesting character and I already love her. Even if she has the power to totally break Gin's heart. Not to mention that little Finn and Bria thing we were all kind of hoping for . . . well I won't spoil it. It's magical how amazing Gin's family is and it's a treat getting to be with them. I'm especially looking forward to some back story on the Deveraux sisters. More of Fletcher's ties to Gin's family is revealed and it's perfect. The pacing of Tangled Threads is on point and the whole book moves so effortlessly. It setups so much for the future books, but it didn't feel like a setup. The journey to take down Mab isn't going to be easy, and I love that Gin won't stoop to Mab's level. Gin won't hesitate to take out her enemy, but she still has her own set of rules to live by.

Sexual Content: Sexual humor, some dark themes, and yes there be sex scenes.

5/5- Fabulous, a beautiful obsession!

It's so cliché to say this after finishing a book in a series, but this is my favorite one yet! This book and series is worth all the buzz. Gin is one of my favorite females of the Urban Fantasy genre, and basically just my favorite female lead in general. She's the perfect antihero. Not only that but I love how Estep doesn't justify Gin and her motives, she accepts that she is a monster. A monster with a heart, but one never the less. Oh and she's unapologetic.

Gin doesn't fall prey to sex hang-ups, judging others (how can she do that after all she's done and lived through), she's actually witty, and despite her legendary status as the Spider she is human. <![CDATA[Venom (Elemental Assassin, #3)]]> 7614747 What kind of assassin works pro bono?

It’s hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most.

To the public, I’m Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland’s best barbecue joint. To my friends, I’m the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker—Mab’s right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists.

At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I’ll take my chances. Then there’s Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland’s finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I’m a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.]]>

Now I'm not going to go on and on like my last review, because to be far Venom is not a romance. But Gin is coming into her own. she’s realized finding her path is realizing the type of people she needs in her life. She's tough and though she's said she knows who she is and will have no regrets about what she's done. She still fears what others will think, in the back of her mind where she doesn't want to admit it. For me that makes her more real, and human. We've all picked the wrong man—person. Made justifications for them, why we are the bad guy and don't deserve them.

It was wonderful watching Gin come to see Owen Grayson. Because the man is sexy! OK, sexy isn't a reason. The Detective Caine was sexy, but he was a total evil asshole. Owen is protective, and alpha, and he does what needs to be done to protect his family. He's worked hard to get where he is, and knows the world isn't black and white. There are gray areas and sometimes terrible things need to be done. The funny thing is even though Owen has done some bad things in the past, he has more compassion and heart than Caine. Argh! There's just no words to describe how much I loved Owen and Gin together. It was a real treat getting to know him, and . . . just read it!!!

OK, enough about that I loved getting to meet Gin's sister as well. Like Gin, Bria is a force to be reckoned with. All of the interactions between the two are amazing and it's building this burning anticipation for them to REALLY meet. Bria is filling Caine's shoes in Ashland as the straight and narrow cop. Which worried me at first, but Bria is not the female version of Caine. No . . .I . . . I love her too!

Which brings me to the most shocking words: I love all of the characters so much. From dark Sophia and light and wonderful Jojo, to Finn the smooth operator, O-W-E-N, Bria, and well there's so many. It's wonderful to be in love with so many characters like this! To see how they all work together and interact. To fear that they might die . . . because Elemental Assassin is that kind of series. Oh, and I enjoy the evilness and wickedness of the villains. Things aren’t wrapped up fast with them, these are epic villains.

Gin has finally decided what she wants to do with her retirement, and finding her way there is quite the journey. Once more is that even though Fletcher is dead Estep shows readers and Gin who the man really was. As the plot unfolds and the mysteries come to light readers will find an even richer story than the previous books. Estep has out done herself and it's safe to say the Elemental Assassins universe is perfection for me. Everything comes with consequences and the characters' lives go on and develop. Again I have to mention how they all interact with each other and how it drives the plot.

Isn't it amazing to be rooting for killers. Hoping that Gin will get her revenge. Venom is filled with monsters, and only those who have danced with the monsters—and at times become monsters themselves—can truly be heroes in Ashland. Venom is a rush and as Gin takes those first few steps at setting up her revenge game fans can’t help put foam at the mouth for more.

Sexual Content: Oh, it’s here. Plenty of sexual humor (Finn!), dark sexual themes, and so on. It’s very gritty at times. The book follows a serial rapist/killer. Nothing too over the top, but it’s dark.

5/5- Fabulous, a beautiful obsession!

<![CDATA[Web of Lies (Elemental Assassin, #2)]]> 6933152 Curiosity is definitely going to get me dead one of these days. Probably real soon.

I'm Gin Blanco.

You might know me as the Spider, the most feared assassin in the South. I’m retired now, but trouble still has a way of finding me. Like the other day when two punks tried to rob my popular barbecue joint, the Pork Pit. Then there was the barrage of gunfire on the restaurant. Only, for once, those kill shots weren’t aimed at me. They were meant for Violet Fox. Ever since I agreed to help Violet and her grandfather protect their property from an evil coalmining tycoon, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m really retired. So is Detective Donovan Caine. The only honest cop in Ashland is having a real hard time reconciling his attraction to me with his Boy Scout mentality. And I can barely keep my hands off his sexy body. What can I say? I’m a Stone elemental with a little Ice magic thrown in, but my heart isn’t made of solid rock. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man . . . dead or alive.]]>

The first part of Web of Lies was not as instantly mind blowing or as addicting as Spider's Bite. It's still infinitely better then a lot of other Urban Fantasy titles I've been reading. We've gotten to know the Spider and Web of Lies is showing how the death of Fletcher Lane and the decision to finally retire is affecting Gin. It's always a good sign when the actions of the previous book shape and evolve the next book, and the entire series.

Falling into the pages of Web of Lies was like coming home, and what's better is seeing someone as tough as Gin redefine herself. Realizing that even if the choices she's made in her life are horrible, maybe even the actions of a monster, she would still stand by them. Make those same choices. Part of Gin might be playing around with the idea of being a better person—even while she hides from her “fuzzy feelings—she understands she will never be that type of woman and doesn't want to be. Which is why I had a hard time with how her emotions jumped so crazily ahead with her crush/lust of Donovan Caine.

It boggled me how a woman so patient and able to think things through. Went from the casual crush/lust she had for Caine in book 1, to this . . . love? Obsession? It was the weakest point of this book. Especially since Caine's actions cut Gin deep. More than Gin, or myself, would like. Especially since Caine's so called moral high ground made him more of a monster to me. No really. Not sure how anyone that read that mine scene—towards the end—between Caine and Gin could resist the urge to slit Caine's throat for Gin. That moment was excellent in showing that hiding behind so called morals and saying you're a good guy, doesn't mean jack.

Estep does a wonderful job playing in the gray areas here. Good guys may not really be good guys, and the monsters are sometimes the ones actually battling the evil. Don't get me wrong, the bad guys are bad. Down right evil, the best of the best for despicable mobsters, lawyers, corrupt miners, and such. Having a heroine like Gin is perfect because these villains need someone not afraid to shed blood and get dirty. Gin has morals and I think it's important that showing how Caine's high-and-mighty ones can be bad and Gin's morals mixed with her dark side make her the person that I'd want on my side. Especially after a scene with Mab Monroe and Gin. Holy cow.

Gin's a sexy strong lead, it’s only natural she has her own stable of man candy. Thankfully it's not all Caine. Yuck. Blessedly within six pages of Owen Grayson entering there was a light at the end of the tunnel! What a great character and I like that readers, and Gin, aren't 100% sure who he is. However, I know one thing. Owen is one heck of a love interest at this point. One that I hope will wash away the stain of Caine.

OK, now that I've over analyzed the romantic aspects of the book let's move on. (Honestly I swear the romance is not the focus!)

The cast of characters in Web of Lies is so awesome. Finn is such an smooth player, and a smart character. It's so sweet how Gin and him interact together. Proving that family is what you make of it. Not blood. Jo-Jo gets more page time here and it's wonderful how she's stepping into Fletcher's shoes as a guide/parental type figure. Sophie, the Goth dwarf, is another cool character that I was very excited to get more page time. These three characters make up Gin's family and it's wonderful to watch them all interact and care for Gin. Especially in helping her realize all of Fletcher and show her what the old man really meant by retirement.

New characters are introduced and I'm exited—hoping—to have them in future books going forward. What makes a series stronger and truly last is the connections that the lead has in that universe. The more connections there are the further it goes in creating a believable world. Which many non-fantasy fans always laugh at me for. It's a fantasy verse, it's not supposed to be real! But we the fans know better.

After a slower start than the last book things get back to good ol'Gin assassin fun. Our girl will always be the Spider even if she goes down a different path. Despite my instant dislike for Caine I do appreciate the “bad romance. Showing that even an amazing assassin can fall prey to misconceptions about people and love. Web of Lies is an example of what good character building can do for a series. The first book introduced us to the Spider, however this book shows us how Gin is becoming more than that. The gritty realism is appreciated from the “romance, to how dangerous being an assassin is, injuries, and shows all the ugly things that dark fantasy fans want. It's nice to have an anti-hero hero as dark and messed up as Gin. Besides, who doesn't love reading about amazing cooking along with planning assassinations and other assorted activities? Gin is definitely one of my book BFFs.

Sexual Content: Oh, quite the sex scene. Plenty of sexual humor, talk of rape, and some other dark/taboo sexual things mentioned. Gritty. (It’s not scary dark or anything. If you normally read darker reads it’s nothing that will explode your mind.)

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

My love of the first book can not be emphasized enough. Which is probably why I was running scared for a while only able to bring myself to read the first book over and over again. See I have a problem. When I read an amazing first book, this fear takes over that the second book—and following—will never be able to hold a flame to the sheer awesomeness that was the first book. It's happened, and sadly so often that I have developed this reading phobia. Or what I sourly call the “First Book Wonder, Shitty Series Terror. It exists. I swear, despite it's lame name.

With a series name like Elemental Assassin, I was expecting all kinds of awesomeness—and the book delivers. Even the cover is lethal!

Assassin characters have always interested me, if a book has a main character that's an assassin I'm there. Sadly enough, not to many authors have been able to pull off this character. The means to how they got to that point are generic, and the character is some how elevated as being a good person and their blood spilling ways justified.

Estep really makes Gin a believable killer. She didn't wake up one day and say, “Hey I think I'd like to kill people, that's a good career path! A chain of tragic childhood events bring her to a point where she needs to survive, and things fall in to place for her to become an assassin. Gin has even carved out the best of life she can manage being an assassin. Her handler and son have become her family, and she tries to aspire to be a cook when she's not killing. Gin was a great character, she new what she was doing was wrong and even refers to herself as a monster at points in the book. Gin does keep to a moral code and tries to only go after “bad people. She even does some “pro-bono work for some abused people.

Following Gin on one of her kills at the beginning of the book is really fun (I know, I know we're killing people here). The work and planning that goes into each kill and all of the steps that need to be taken to remain anonymous. After all our girl is the Spider, one of the best killers out there and in high demand.

The love interest was such a great match. He's the only clean cop in the city, and after Gin killed his unsavory partner, he's out to bring the killer in. Gin has had her eye on him ever since, his purity or the fact that he's trying to find her draws her in. The events end up leaving the cop with only Gin to help him as the whole system is corrupt and all he can do to stay alive is trust in the honor of an assassin. Watching his growing attraction to Gin was definitely a highlight of this book for me. After all he's a saint, how can he be attracted to such an evil person. Someone who killed his partner. Maybe his world isn't black and white, maybe there are shades of gray.

The other side characters are very colorful and very lovable. Each one was a treat on the page and I loved getting more information on them. They all interacted in the world and made for great dialogue. The giant evil villain that is probably going to be spanning this series is fantastic. I love the fact that both evil villains in this book are female—women evil villains always seem to be more vicious and absolute fun!

My only complaint is the F-bomb is thrown out there a lot, like candy at a parade. Gin is a kick-booty, very witty character she can come across just as cool minus the swearing. Or maybe just a little less, as it is part of her character.

Bottom Line: It's great learning about our witty assassin as the story progresses. I completely fell for our killing lady and I am DIEING for more! (Every pun intended.) Need is the word that pops into mind about this book. I NEED to know where Gin is headed now that she's “retiring and that cliffhanger ending. The love story is on the NEED to know what's going to happen next. Just give me the next book, I NEED it.

Sexual Content: Naughty thoughts are running through Gins mind about our good cop and there is a very steamy closet scene. Oh, and some heavy petting at the bar.

5/5- There are no excuses to miss this one!

278 Anya Bast 0425216144 Shera (Book Whispers) 2 Genre: Paranormal Romance

Years ago I had picked up Witch Blood (book two in the Elemental Witches series), it turned into a great idea. After about halfway through I realized that the sex was too much. My preferences being a lot of plot with a side of hot sex. So what made me come back to this series? Bast came out with a new series, Dark Magick, that just blew me away. Her new series still had quite a bit of sex, but I also had a lot more paranormal titles under my belt.

The Elemental Witches really has a great idea behind it. Witches take up one element: earth, water, fire, or air. There are evil witches, warlocks, who use other witches as sacrifices to Demons to gain more powers. The Warlocks have pretty much wiped out the rare Air Witches, so when they find out about Mira they mean business. Mira doesn’t know she’s a Witch, her parents wanting her to live without the fear of being hunted. So not only is Mira unaware of her powers, and the danger she’s in, she has no idea that her parents were really killed by being sacrificed in a circle.

With this great idea behind it there’s clearly potential for a great plot, but it suffers from being tempered by the sex scenes. Every time the plot would pick up a sex scene would just pop up, and then the page count for those scenes just kept going. Steamy scenes would be drug out to the point where I would think, “And moving on from her third orgasm please.

Mira and Jack had average chemistry to go with their average plot. Mira’s air magic and Jack’s fire magic are hormone makers when combined and unable to resist the magical pull they tumble into bed together. Then their struggle of “love continues from there as they try to realize that they might have real un-magically induced feelings for each other. To be honest the need to jump in bed together because of some magic pull is just way over used. (Get over it PNR authors, get over it.) At least I got some really awesome banter out of it.

Witch Fire has a new idea to bring to the overwhelmed genre of Paranormal Romance. Lamentably all of that lovely idea is diluted by an average plot, overdone/lengthy sex scenes, and a so-so love story. Clearly Bast gains more style in her later Dark Magick series, here’s hoping she takes Elemental Witches to that level. (If you’re new to the Paranormal Genre or just thinking about trying it out, this is not the place to start.)

Vast amounts of page time for very detailed sex scenes. Did I mention really lengthy sex scenes?

Windfall (Weather Warden, #4) 157569
After losing her job as a Weather Warden (those with the ability to manipulate the weather and avowed to protect humankind), Joanne is finding life in the "real world" not as enticing as she once thought. Her job as a cheesecake weather girl is humiliating, especially with a lecherous head meteorologist (deliciously named Marvelous Marvin McLarty) who delights in devising new ways to embarrass her on camera. But with her supernatural Djinn lover slowly dying and a recently divorced, shopping-addicted sister camping out on her sofa, Joanne's problems couldn't possibly get worse -- or could they? Throw in a highly suspicious detective bent on arresting Joanne on murder charges, a Djinn civil war, and a monster of an approaching hurricane --and suddenly Marvelous Marvin's antics don't seem so bad!

Wildly unpredictable weather -- and women! -- and an extraordinarily entertaining female protagonist with enough sexy panache and irreverent attitude to make Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake look like an octogenarian etiquette expert, Rachel Caine's Weather Warden saga (Chill Factor, Heat Stroke, et al.) is an absolute delight to read. You want guilty pleasures? Read these novels, which are a little romance, a little urban fantasy, and a whole lot of fun. Barometer not included.]]>

In Rachel Caine's tempestuous follow-up to Ill Wind--forecast as "a fun read" by bestselling author Jim Butcher--the Wardens Association still protects the human race from extermination by climatic extremes, when they're not turning on their own....

Accused of murder, Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin was chased across the country--and killed--by a team charged with hunting down rogue Wardens.

Five days later, Joanne had a lovely funeral and was posthumously cleared of all charges. Her human life was over, but she had been reborn into Djinnhood. Now, until she masters her enhanced powers, Joanne must try to avoid being "claimed" by a human. But when a hazard that only a Djinn could sense infiltrates Earth's atmosphere, Joanne must somehow convince someone to do something about it--or the forecast will be deadly.

So who said being all-powerful was going to be easy?]]>

Hmmmmm. Honestly the only reason I went back and finished this book was because I was so excited about it and requested the ARC. Nothing bums me out more than when a book I requested doesn't work out for me. About 17% of the way in I had to take a break. The reasons were that it was generic and boring. So upon picking it up after quite a bit of time has passed and I'm in a different frame of mind. Enough of a new frame of mind that I did finish the whole book, so that now I can elaborate as to why I found it generic and boring.

First off after you've read a certain amount of books you pick up on things. Plots and stories ideas, so on. At some point you just can't stand reading the same story again featuring (hopefully at least) new character names and a slight spin. Or no spin. The world of paranormal YA has been explored and The Prophecy of Shadows had nothing new to bring to it. Especially as everyone has done Greek mythology. When another YA PR book decides to “borrow it either falls flat or at least makes its character stand out.

However, even the characters were borrowed. They were never developed enough to not be hallow shells. I feel like this book was a check list of things a title like this needs. The most exciting parts about it where some of the jokes made about Harry Potter.

Don't even get me started on the mysterious boy/love interest. I guess "Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt." from the synopsis. Not to mention this winner: "His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic."

I'm not sure if I really paid attention to the synopsis.

What is with YA titles where the girls land the hottest guy who happens to have a horrible girlfriend that she steals him from. First off, why are they dating that horrible girl. (Yeah there's always some lame excuse. Why can't they admit it's probably not for hand holding?) Secondly, don't covet and date him. Coveting another's man is bad, secondly um he's dating a horrible person. Whom you stole him from.

World building, plot, and characters weren't even really attempted. If anything this was just a lazy attempt to try and cash out on the genre. You know if you write it the fans will come. Yeah, there are plenty of readers who probably won't recognize or mind that isn't trying. Which works fine. I however have no interest in seeing where this uninspired series is going to go.

Content Warning: Wow, I can't remember. I think there may have been mild sexual humor. Pretty sure this is a safe read all around.

1/5- I couldn't finish it or wish I hadn't.

So when Finnegan Lane, my foster brother, gets word of a surprising inheritance, we figure why not skip town for someplace less dangerous for a few days? That place: Bullet Pointe, a fancy hotel resort complex plus Old West theme park that Finn now owns lock, stock, and barrel.

At first, all the struttin cowboys and sassy saloon girls are just hokey fun. But add in some shady coincidences and Circle assassins lurking all around, and vacationing becomes wilder—and deadlier—than any of us expected.

Good thing this assassin brought plenty of knives to the gunfight …]]>

<![CDATA[Bitter Bite (Elemental Assassin, #14)]]> 25814230
It’s not easy being queen bee of an underworld abuzz with crooks and killers. Wielding my potent Ice and Stone elemental magic will only get me so far—my real secret is my tight-knit makeshift family, a motley crew of cops and criminals, dwarves and playboys. My foster brother Finnegan Lane is my right-hand man, but when his suddenly not-dead relative comes back into the picture, I’m the one on the outside looking in.

It’s funny how life works: one minute your best friend is rock-steady, and the next he’s doe-eyed and buying into this whole loving-relative routine to the point of ignoring you. I’d like to be happy for Finn, I really would. But all of my instincts are telling me that beneath the syrupy sweet demeanor and old-fashioned charm, this sudden interloper is planning something. The whole shtick leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This person might have avoided the grave once, but I’ll put anyone who hurts Finn in the ground—for good.]]>

<![CDATA[Warden (Elemental Paladins, #1)]]> 27863665
Sounds like a pretty good deal, right?

The only problem is, Max has no idea what a warden is let alone a paladin. She's been alone her whole life, causing natural disasters and bar fights everywhere she goes. Strange creatures stalk her every step, and she's fairly certain she's a chocolate junkie. Meeting a bunch of smokin' hot knights seems too good to be true but she's just desperate enough to believe them. After all, what harm could there be in a few days of rest and relaxation in a beautiful house by the beach, surrounded by a harem of muscle-bound warriors?

But there's one thing she didn't count on ... Ryker.

The unofficial leader of the group of outcast paladins, Ryker is a perpetually premenstrual, growly, broody, insensitive jerk with no brain-to-mouth filter. He also happens to be the sexiest, hottest, most sensual man Max has ever had the pleasure of ogling. Six foot four of solid muscle, deep chocolate brown eyes, shaggy black hair and a rugged scar down one side of his face, he was Max's every fantasy come to life. But the ancient knight is scarred with a tragic past and believes his soul is stained with dishonour. Coupled with Max's own stubbornness and trust issues, she figures the chance of getting a happy ending is pretty slim.

But fate can be a fickle wench, as Max and Ryker soon discover in Warden, Elemental Paladins: Book One.]]>

<![CDATA[Spider's Trap (Elemental Assassin, #13)]]> 23492543 Keep your friends close but your enemies within stabbing distance.

One important lesson I’ve learned in the assassination business is that to be the best you have to roll with the punches. Now that I’m queen of Ashland’s underworld—by default, not by choice—a lot more punches are being thrown my way. But I suppose that’s the price of victory for taking down some of the underworld’s top dogs. Good thing I have my Ice and Stone magic to help me survive my volatile new position. Just when I think things are finally settling down, someone tries to murder me during a hush-hush underworld meeting. But the real surprise is how strangely familiar my shadowy assailant seems to be.

My job is to maintain order among killers, crooks, and thieves, and soon I’m embroiled in a bloody game where the ability to keep secrets could be the greatest superpower of all. My enemies have all sharpened their knives and laid their traps, waiting for me to fall. But this Spider weaves her own webs of death…]]>
