They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. But George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own.

While the powerlessness of the laboring class is a recurring theme in Steinbeck's work of the late 1930s, he narrowed his focus when composing Of Mice and Men, creating an intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and a shared dream that makes an individual's existence meaningful.

A unique perspective on life's hardships, this story has achieved the status of timeless classic due to its remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films.]]>

Plot: This book is about to men who go around California looking for work, their names are George and Lennie. They find work at a farm and make friends with most of the people there. George and Lennie have a plan to have their own house and own farm and live off the land so they do not have to deal with other people telling them what to do. George goes out to hang with Candy and Curley outside and throw horse shoes. Curley's wife goes up stairs in the barn and talks to Lennie. Lennie just accidentally killed a dog and he was a little upset. Curley's wife is a little flirt and she wanted to talk to Lennie. She lets him touch her hair because she said it was really soft and Lennie likes to touch soft things, then Curley's wife tells him to stop and tries to get him to stop and Lennie getgs scared and holds on to her hair really tight. He finally lets go and he shakes her to make sure she does not tell George so he does not get in trouble. He accidentally kills her by snapping her neck. Lennie goes out and hides in the bushes where George told him to hide and George ends up shooting Lennie for his own good and then the book ends.

Characterization: George and Lennie are the two main characters in this book. George is clever but not that smart. He looks after Lennie keeping him out of trouble because he cannot look after him self. George is not that big or strong but he knows how to manage. Lennie is a big strong man who is also challenged. He likes to pet soft things and is nice and kind. He just is not that smart.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to both boys and girls around the age of 14-100 who love the old days and love history. I say this because this book has history and a great message behind it and i feel that people who enjoy history and stuff like that will enjoy this book just as much as I did. ]]>

Romeo and Juliet 18135 Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud.

In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers.]]>

This book started off as Romeo seeing Juliet at a ball when he was trying to get over Rosaline. He thought that she was beautiful and they both fell for each other at first sight. The only problem was that Juliet was a Capulet and Romeo was a Montague. Their families didn’t get along at all. Romeo went to Friar Lawrence for them to get married. The Friar secretly married them because the thought that it would stop the feud between the two families. Right after Romeo and Juliet got married, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Romeo get into a fight and Tybalt and Mercutio got killed and Romeo ends up getting banished from Verona and sent to Mantua. Capulet wanted Juliet to marry Paris so the Friar came up with a plan for her to fake her death and run away with Romeo. Romeo didn't know the plan and he killed himself. Juliet found out that he killed himself and she killed herself. After both families saw this, the feud ended.

I would only recommend this book to males and females if they have to do a report on William Shakespeare. I say this because I thought that this book wasn’t too enjoyable. It was very easy to guess what would happen. I might have to read another William Shakespeare book to see if all his are like that. All in all, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare was just an okay book.

The ghost goes and shows him his business that no longer exists and his grave that had day he was born and the day that he died on his tomb. Scrooge got scared and asked the ghost to forgive him. Furnace Penitentiary: the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, sentenced to life without parole, “new fish Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison.

Together with a bunch of inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace’s deeper, darker purpose, Alex’s actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that’s hidden from the eyes of the world.

This book started off as Alex worried about going to the furnace. Throughout this book Alex makes friends and they want to escape also. One of those friends was Donovan. He was the smartest one of the group. He was the one that knew how to survive and not get in trouble. Donovan taught Alex how to survive and not get in trouble. He looked after him. When Alex would get in trouble Donovan was there to get him out. He is the mastermind behind the escape plot. Alex was the one that found the river, but Donovan was the one to think how to escape. Alex and all his friends try to escape from prison but they are about to get caught and the police officer’s say “send the dogs and then the book ended.

I would recommend this book to anyone from the ages of 14 to 18. I feel that kids that age could understand what is happening better than a 10 year old. I also feel that kids that age could relate to what is happening to Alex, maybe not at a prison but here at school.

The Outsiders 231804 The Outsiders is about two weeks in the life of a 14-year-old boy. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers--until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy's skin, causing his bifurcated world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser.

“The Outsiders started off as Ponyboy introducing all the characters in the book. Then Ponyboy is walked home from the movies and the Socs jumped him. This was a feud that happened all throughout the book. Then Ponyboy was getting drowned by the Socs. Then Johnny pulled a blade and stabed Bob! Then Ponyboy and Johnny ran to Dally for help, and he told them to go to Jay Mountain. The church they stayed at started on fire and Johnny got burned badly. This caused him to die, and his last words to Pony were “Stay golden, Pony." Then Pony and his brothers stayed together and lived happily forever and ever.

I would recommend this book to pretty much everyone around the ages of 10-18. I really liked this book. Pretty much everything that happened in this book I felt that kids my age can relate to what happened in this book.

I read the book “The Outsiders, and I very much enjoyed this book. I loved the whole theme of appearance vs. reality. Another thing I loved about this book is how it would always keep me guessing. For once I found a book that I actually wanted to read. That almost never happens to me.

“My Side of the Mountain starts off as him just surviving in the wilderness with his pet falcon named Fightfull. Then one day he notices that he is running out of food. This gives him the idea to go to town and buy some food. When he is in town he makes some friends and his friends tell there friends about him and then the word gets out that there is a boy living in the wilderness all by himself. That gets all over the news and his parents end up seeing it on the news. His parents go to rescue him and bring him but he does not want to go home. He ends up getting his parents to let him stay in the wilderness. His parents build him a cabin in the woods and they let him be free.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. I very much didn’t like this book. I would only have someone read this book if they have to do a report on Jean Craighead George.

I read the book “My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. I did not like this book at all. I thought that it was really boring and that not much happened in the whole 177 pages of this book. I felt like the author just got bored with this book half way through and just wanted to finish this book.

In the start of this book Rudy isn't doing well. The book starts in the beginning of the season. Then his coach gives him a Yogi Barret face mask. This gives Rudy the courage to do better. For the next three games he does really good. Then on the last game Rudy knows what the team is doing so right when the batter squares to bunt Rudy yells "Bunt!" Then his whole team runs for the ball. Rudy picks up the ball and tags the guy that was running home. He then throws the ball to second base, and the second baseman throws the ball to first base and gets a triple play. This wins the game for the team.

I would recommend "Catcher's Mask" to fifth and up. I say this because I feel that kids this age could really relate to Rudy and all the challenges he faces in this book. If a 30 year old man read this book I don’t think he would have enjoyed it as much.]]>

I enjoyed reading "The Catcher's Mask" by Matt Christopher. I liked how Rudy was worried about Zero taking his place as catcher. He started doing bad in the baseball season but at the end of the book he was doing really well and winning the game for his team.
