Mr. Shaitana was famous, as were his parties. He was also a man of whom everybody was a little afraid. So, when he boasted to Poirot that he considered murder an art form, the detective had some reservations about accepting a party invitation of cards and viewing Shaitana’s private art collection. Indeed, what began as an absorbing evening of bridge was to turn into a more dangerous game altogether…]]>

When she finally gets a teacher who isn't horrible (lovely Miss Jenny), this teacher is sent away to another school because the students' grades in certain subjects aren't good enough. Ughhh. And, even though Emmy Lou seems to have three caring aunts and one uncle at home, there is very little support for her during her school years.

I thought that perhaps the end of the book (or maybe the very last chapter) would make up for it all in the end...(SPOILER ALERT), but it 100% does not. The writing style is slightly strange and, at the same time, I kept thinking I was missing something. This middle grade account of poor Emmy Lou depressed me horribly. I rounded it up to 2 stars, but it really should have given it one.

I was so disappointed by this vintage middle grade story! The dust jacket is so cute and I was delighted when the story started with Emmy Lou at school. Sadly, the more I read, the sadder I became. Emmy Lou just had no luck at school...every chapter describes her in a difficult situation or a different grade. I felt like this poor little girl never got a break :(

The town of Haystoun is in a tizzy because Andrew and Lucy Lockhart and their children are boldly returning, several years after Andrew’s scandalous liaison with another woman. Most residents are firmly in Lucy’s corner, but as Lucy’s plans to host a family gathering in celebration of their return exacerbates existing tensions, Andrew’s cousin Kate Heron—drafted to help smooth the way—begins to wonder . . . The resulting difficulties draw in Kate’s brother Greystiel, elderly Jean Anstruther, who keeps the town under careful surveillance, Jean’s nephew Robin, the Lockharts formidable Aunt Charlotte, and an unforgettable array of supporting characters as the tale reaches its satisfying climax.

Because of Sam 57455008 Sometimes, in a rare moment of leisure, when Mrs. Maitland looked back across the thirty years of her short married life and long widowhood, the nineteen-year-old girl on the other side of that gap seemed a total stranger, incredibly young and untried, incredibly ignorant.

Millie Maitland has settled happily into her busy if slightly impoverished existence in the Scottish village of Mennan, watched over now and then by her solicitor, who once proposed marriage, and her daughter Amabel, grown but still a handful. Millie is much loved by her friends and neighbours, including the gossipy Mrs. Gray, the kind Mrs. Denholm, a shepherd's wife isolated in the hills, and the appalling Mrs. Noble, a flirt whose husband is overseas. But into this contented, quiet life comes a bit of drama. It all starts innocently enough when Martin Heriot, a bachelor farmer, asks Millie to board a black labrador puppy named Sam . . .

Molly Clavering was for many years the neighbour and friend of bestselling author D.E. Stevenson (in just such a village as Mennan), and they may well have influenced one another's writing. As soon as I started reading this Furrowed Middlebrow edition, there were so many sections that I felt compelled to highlight. This author's nature and home descriptions are perfection! I was disappointed that the season of Christmas was passed over, though. I would have LOVED to read a cozy description of my favorite season.

It was a joy to revisit Susan, Jed, Oliver and Peggy in this book, but it was a treat to also meet Amanda (a distant relative of Jed's). The lively conversations between these four were my favorites. Sadly, the other characters in this novel (including the horrid Miss Pringles) are just frustrating, irritating and depressing. Of course, some of their appearances caused a chuckle or comic relief, but any interaction with Ruth, any of the Pringle sisters and possibly Larry were cringe-worthy.

Despite these unlikable characters, I still have a great fondness for this book. An illustration of the inside and the outside of Susan and Jed's Scottish home is one thing I wish was included in this republished Dean Street Press book!

Dear Hugo 57455026 When the time comes for you to retire, Hugo, if you want a quiet life, don't settle down in the country. Bury yourself in London or any really large city, and you can live like a hermit, but avoid the outskirts of a village. I am dazed by the ceaseless whirl of activities in which almost everyone in and round Ravenskirk is involved.

Sara Monteith makes an ideal correspondent for Hugo Jamieson, brother of her lost love Ivo, killed in the war before they could marry. Her neighbours in the lovely Border village of Ravenskirk don't know that Sara has moved here because it's where Ivo and Hugo grew up, but they welcome her warmly. Soon, she's drawn into the active village social scene of tea parties, gardening, carol-singing, and Coronation festivities, dodging the judgments of stern Miss Bonaly, defending her helper Madge Marchbanks, an unwed mother, befriending kind, practical Elizabeth Drysdale and charming Mrs. Currie and her daughter Sylvia (the latter first met halfway through Sara's drawing room window), and having an embarrassing first encounter with rugged Major Whitburn. Add in her nephew Arthur, neglected by an indifferent father, Arthur's dog Pam, and even Hugo himself returning unexpectedly from overseas, and Sara's life is a 'ceaseless whirl' indeed!

Molly Clavering was for many years the neighbour and friend of bestselling author D.E. Stevenson (in just such a village as Ravenskirk), and they may well have influenced one another's writing. Mrs. Lorimer's Quiet Summer 57455007 The two were friends and had been for many years before Miss Douglas, a little battered by war experiences, had settled down in Threipford, to Mrs. Lorimer's quiet content. ... Both wrote; each admired the other's work. Lucy possessed what Gray knew she herself would never have, a quality which for want of a better name she called "saleability."

In what is surely Molly Clavering's most autobiographical novel, two middle-aged women writers, close friends and neighbours, offer one another advice and support while navigating life in a lively Border village. Lucy Lorimer, the more successful author, with her four children, in-laws, and grandchildren gathered for a summer reunion, must try to avert disaster in one daughter's marriage, help a daughter-in-law restless with mundane married life after flying planes in the war, and deal with the awkward reappearance of an old flame. Unmarried Grace ('Gray') Douglas, meanwhile, has struggles of her own, but is drawn delightfully into her friend's difficulties.

In real life, Molly Clavering was herself for many years a neighbour and close friend of bestselling author D.E. Stevenson. First published in 1953, Mrs. Lorimer's Quiet Summer is not only an irresistible family story, but undoubtedly provides some indication of the inspiring friendship between these two brilliantly talented women. This new edition includes an introduction by Elizabeth Crawford.]]>

Throughout the book, I kept thinking that I wish I knew more about the character of Miss Gray Douglas (which I knew to be based on Molly Clavering herself). I wanted to follow more of her character, her life, and her thoughts. I thought she would be a lovely person to know and to have as a friend.

It was disappointing that the character of Mrs. Lorimer (who is supposed to be loosely based on D.E. Stevenson, one of my all-time favorite authors) was less interesting and I actually found her to be a bit exasperating. I've always had such a high opinion her of as an author and love her writing style to bits. I never spent much time considering what she might have been like as a real person and, if this semi-memoir is accurate, I find it sad that D.E. Stevenson was so detached, quiet, and not wanting to show her emotions. I always thought of her as being lively, interesting, and spunky. Maybe that was a mistake on my part.

Anyway, my opinions have little to do with this particular book. I'm not sure if it's a definite re-read, but it was a nice introduction to the writing of Molly Clavering and I'm looking forward to reading more. A lovely early summer read!]]>

The pace was absolutely perfect for me and I found the plot to be both immensely interesting and comforting at the same time. Susan and Peggy (and her younger siblings, The Infantry, are so funny!) are the perfect positive female characters, while the Misses Pringle (similar to Miss Read's Mrs. Pringle!) are delightfully irritating gossips that need a good set down! lol.

Besides the wonderful domestic details and lovely Scottish countryside, there were multiple romances happening and that made it all the more enjoyable. The more MC novels I read, the more I want to read!

I have to admit that I had a little crush on the strong and silent Jed Armstrong (shhh...don't tell anyone).

The only small challenge that I had was trying to decipher the conversations written in the Scottish dialect. I was like..."what are they trying to sayyyyyy???" Luckily, the surrounding paragraphs helped me to figure it out.

The Baker's Daughter 1545269
Sue Pringle has never met anyone like John Darnay before. A painter who roams the countryside with brush in hand, Darnay is so absorbed in his art that he can barely remember to feed himself-a stark contrast to the practical shopkeepers and shepherds of her tiny village.

Working as his housekeeper allows Sue to observe the eccentric Darnay unnoticed as he goes about his work translating the beautiful Scottish countryside onto canvas... and Sue soon realizes that not only has she been transfixed by his arresting artwork, she has fallen in love with Darnay himself. But will he ever look up from his paints long enough to love her back?

One of celebrated author D.E. Stevenson's earliest and most beloved novels, The Baker's Daughter is a heartwarming story of finding love in unexpected places.]]>

<![CDATA[The Beast of Littleton Woods (A Lady Hardcastle Mystery, #12)]]> 220444963 They’re used to solving murders. But until now the killer has always been human

October 1912. The inhabitants of Littleton Cotterell emerge from their homes after a week of torrential storms to the gruesome news that one of Sid Hyde’s prized sheep has been mauled to death. As rumours abound of a vicious beast stalking the Gloucestershire countryside in search of prey, Lady Hardcastle and her fearless lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, set out to find what is surely a rational explanation.

Then Hyde himself is brutally killed in a similar attack, and the villagers go from curious to terrified. Littleton Cotterell isn’t exactly unaccustomed to murderers—but a ferocious animal capable of tearing a man to shreds? That’s entirely different.

When another man dies and a third is injured, it’s clear that whatever is behind the attacks needs to be caught, and fast. But are the villagers really seeing what they think they are? Is there actually a beast on the loose? Or is what’s out there something more sinister—and much more human?]]>

Cat With No Fiddle 231144028 188 Mollie Chappell Gina 3
Livvy, aged 12, is asked to be a companion/friend to Sally—the granddaughter of wealthy Mrs. Hunt in the village. Mrs. Hunt owns a vast estate and, because no one ever gets a glimpse of the old lady, they are very curious about her. When her son, a famous actor, visits his mother's home a few months before her 100th birthday, things begin to happen. Livvy and Sally become close friends and end up enlisting Livvy's brother and sister to help solve the mystery of the cat figurine that's missing a fiddle.

There's family drama, smuggling, lost children, faked identities, theft and uneasiness throughout most of the book. Cat with No Fiddle starts off cozy and interesting, becomes more and more tense (but also strangely more vague) during the middle of the book, and ends in a satisfactory way for both families.

I was really interested at the beginning, slightly confused and bored during most of the middle and then became intrigued again at the end of this vintage middle grade book. I'm not sure I would read it again, but it did interest me on and off. Plus, the dust jacket is adorable.

This is my least favorite of the six Collins Seagull Library/The Children's Press editions so far, but it was still entertaining and I'm glad I own it.

Nemesis 2282558 "How pleasant to meet Miss Marple again." -Literary Times Supplement

So pleasant in fact, she was the Anthony Award Winner for Best Series of the Century. Here she solves a crime that not only has no body, no weapon, and no suspects, but no evidence that a crime has even been committed. All Miss Marple has to go on is one single word: nemesis.

I love how this novel is a companion book to A Caribbean Mystery, but takes place many years later. Nemesis follows up with Jason Rafiel and his unusual request of Miss Marple to mitigate justice once again. Although this is a more active mystery than some of the other books in the Miss Marple series, it's still incredibly cozy.

You'll find:
A few familiar characters from A Caribbean Mystery
 Old Homes and historic gardens
 Suspicious old ladies
 Gossipy villagers
 Knitting
Marriage, death, missing persons and a bus tour

Although you don't have to read A Caribbean Mystery first, it does help to give you a foundation for some of the characters. I absolutely love this mystery and, especially, this particular edition. The cover illustration always looked so wonderfully creepy to me.

One of my top five favorite AC novels! Highly recommended!]]>

Although I've read the Tommy and Tuppence series much less than the Miss Marple series, I've enjoyed their adventures at least ten times over. The way they work together not only gives me the giggles, but I entirely love Albert as their "butler/houseman". He is definitely an important part of their success.

For some reason, I find it so interesting that this book centers around a new house, a nursing home and also a house along the railway line, next to a humpback bridge. Anything to do with houses, is up my alley! By the Pricking of My Thumbs also features old books, favorite childhood titles, hunting for secret papers in old furniture, visiting cemeteries, creepy country folks and unsettling old ladies. What more could you ask for?

The only reason I bumped this book down a bit is that, the more I read it, the more I feel like Tommy is unfair to Tuppence. Not only in his words and impatience with her, but for his lack of appreciation for such a caring, brave and intelligent wife. She's always looking out for his wants and needs, while he tend to respond to most things she does with impatience, brusqueness or even ridicule. It makes me feel incredibly frustrated.

But, overall, it's my top three favorite book in this series. Also, I really enjoy the audio book narrated by Hugh Fraser (a genius!). So, I tend to alternate between reading and listening. A must-read Agatha Christie, in my opinion!]]>

The Man in the Dark 61400441 "Yes, and then I'll go over Miss Kay's rooms with either you or the housekeeper."

"There is no housekeeper, Miss."

From his voice it sounded as if the housekeeper had been strangled and her body put in the cellar; it nearly made Marda giggle.

James Longford, a wealthy former racing car driver with vision loss from an accident several years before, hires 26-year-old Marda Mayne as companion to his newly-orphaned 17-year-old American ward Shirley. His main concern is to avoid being troubled so he can continue to live in self-imposed isolation, but as plucky, practical Marda and flirtatious, kind-hearted Shirley take his intimidating household staff in hand (and find an unexpected ally in that surly butler), they also begin to revive James' interest in life. The trio will have to brace themselves, however, when his self-absorbed, manipulative sister Vera-who sees his fortune as practically already hers-announces a visit.

The Man in the Dark is the fifth of twelve charming, page-turning romances published under the pseudonym "Susan Scarlett" by none other than beloved children's author and novelist Noel Streatfeild. Out of print for decades, they were rediscovered by Greyladies Books in the early 2010s, and Dean Street Press and Furrowed Middlebrow are delighted now to make all twelve available to a wider audience.

<![CDATA[Emily Dickinson's Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Iconic Poet]]> 43212842
Emily Dickinson was a keen observer of the natural world, but less well known is the fact that she was also an avid gardener—sending fresh bouquets to friends, including pressed flowers in her letters, and studying botany at Amherst Academy and Mount Holyoke. At her family home, she tended both a small glass conservatory and a flower garden.

In Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life , award-winning author Marta McDowell explores Dickinson’s deep passion for plants and how it inspired and informed her writing. Tracing a year in the garden, the book reveals details few know about Dickinson and adds to our collective understanding of who she was as a person. By weaving together Dickinson’s poems, excerpts from letters, contemporary and historical photography, and botanical art, McDowell offers an enchanting new perspective on one of America’s most celebrated but enigmatic literary figures.]]>

A Chelsea Concerto 32334707
Frances Faviell lived in Chelsea before and during the London Blitz, having became a Red Cross volunteer when World War II began. Chelsea was particularly heavily bombed and the author was often in the heart of the action, witnessing or involved in fascinating and horrific events through 1940 and 1941. Her memoir evokes an unforgettable cast, Londoners and refugees alike, caught up together in extraordinary and dangerous times not forgetting the ‘Green Cat, a Chinese statuette, standing on the author’s window sill as the home’s talismanic protector.

Frances Faviell’s memoir is powerful in its blend of humour, tenderness and horror, including the most haunting ending of any wartime memoir. A Chelsea Concerto is reprinted now for the first time since 1959, with a new introduction by Virginia Nicholson.]]>

<![CDATA[The Belfry Murder (Inspector Hugh Collier #3)]]> 50547442 “If I meet any dragons I’ll run away.

When Mary Borlase, English governess of the little Countess Nadine, escapes from Russia during the Great War, she brings with her jewels belonging to the ill-fated Romanoffs, including a famous emerald, the Eye of Nero. Mary dies of pneumonia a few days after reaching England, in a room over her brother’s antique shop. What has become of the now missing jewels? Has she hidden them somewhere, or entrusted them to someone before her death?

Years later a Russian waiter sells a secret twice over, and pays the ultimate price. The search for the emerald has begun.

For a man calling himself Mr. Brown, and his gang, it is first an adventure, but becomes a matter of life and death. For Martin Drury, chicken-farming in Sussex it brings the gleam of romance and a chance of knight errantry. And for Inspector Hugh Collier of Scotland Yard, young and ambitious, backing his intuitions against the opinions of his superiors, it is a case full of pitfalls, whose issues might spell promotion—or a fatal mark against his name.

The Belfry Murder was originally published in 1933. This new edition features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

She dazzled millions as Gigi. Eliza Doolittle. Holly Golightly. But to her most adoring fan, Audrey Hepburn was best known for her role as “Mummy.

In this heartfelt tribute to his mother, Sean Hepburn Ferrer offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of one of Hollywood's brightest stars. Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit is a stunning compilation of nearly 300 photographs, many straight from the family album and never before published; archival documents, personal correspondence, and mementos; even paintings and illustrations from the actress herself.

Sean tells Audrey Hepburn's remarkable story, from her childhood in war-torn Holland to the height of her fame to her autumn years far from the camera and the crush of the paparazzi. Sean introduces us to someone whose grace, charm, and beauty were matched only by her insecurity about her appearance and talent, and who used her hard-won recognition as a means to help children less fortunate than her own. With this unique biography, Sean celebrates his mother's history and humanity—and continues her charitable work by donating proceeds from this book to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund.]]>

Just Being Audrey 9303006 Roman Holiday to Breakfast at Tiffany's, when Audrey Hepburn starred in a movie, she lit up the screen. Her unique sense of fashion, her grace, and, most important, her spirit made her beloved by generations. But her life offscreen was even more luminous. As a little girl growing up in Nazi-occupied Europe, she learned early on that true kindness is the greatest measure of a person—and it was a lesson she embodied as she became one of the first actresses to use her celebrity to shine a light on the impoverished children of the world through her work with UNICEF.

This is Audrey Hepburn as a little girl, an actress, an icon, an inspiration; this is Audrey just being Audrey.]]>

<![CDATA[The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Grey]]> 220999791 As spiritualism reaches its fevered pitch at the dawn of the 20th century, a Scottish girl crosses the veil to unlock a powerful connection within an infamous asylum in this thrillingly atmospheric, exquisitely evocative exploration of feminine rage and agency for readers of Sarah Penner, Alice Hoffman, and Hester Fox.

Leaving behind a quiet life of simple comforts, Nairna Liath traverses the Scottish countryside with her charlatan father, Tavish. From remote cottages to rural fairs, the duo scrapes by on paltry coins as Tavish orchestrates “encounters with the departed, while Nairna interprets tarot cards for those willing to pay for what they wish to hear.

But beyond her father’s trickery, Nairna possesses a genuine gift for communicating with the spirit world, one that could get an impoverished country girl branded a witch. A talent inherited from her grandmother, Lottie Liath, widow of a Welsh coalminer, whose story of imprisonment and exploitation in a notorious asylum is calling out to Nairna from four decades past—a warning to break free from the manipulations, greed, and betrayals of others.

What do the cards hold for Nairna’s future?

Rescued from homelessness by a well-connected stranger, Nairna is whisked into a new life among Edinburgh’s elite Spiritualist circle, including visiting American star Dorothy Kellings. Researchers, doctors, psychics, and thrill-seekers clamor for the rising young medium. But after a séance with blood-chilling results, a shocking scandal ensues, and Nairna flees to a secluded community near Boston, where she assumes a new Nora Grey.

But Nora can’t stay hidden when Dorothy Kellings offers her the chance to face all comers and silence skeptics at a spectacular séance at Boston’s Old South Meeting Hall, where Nora will come face to face at last with her spiritual the courageous Lottie Liath, whose heart-wrenching story and profound messages are indelibly tied to Nora’s destiny.]]>

The Lantern House 58783428 From the nationally beloved co-host of the #1 hit show Home Town comes the quintessential celebration of home.

Imagine a house's early days as a home: A young family builds a picket fence and plants flowers in its yard, children climb the magnolia tree and play the piano in the living room, and there is music inside the house for many happy years. But what will happen when its windows grow dark, its paint starts to crumble, and its boards creak in the winter wind? The house dreams of a family who will love it again...and one day, a new story will emerge from within its walls.

In this modern classic, Erin Napier’s lyrical prose and Adam Trest’s warm and comforting paintings deeply evoke the soul of a house cherishing the seasons of life and discovering the joy of rebirth.

<![CDATA[When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (Out of the Hitler Time, #1)]]> 54283 Partly autobiographical, this is first of the internationally acclaimed trilogy by Judith Kerr telling the unforgettable story of a Jewish family fleeing from Germany at the start of the Second World War

Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in Germany any longer. Suppose you found, to your complete surprise, that your own father was one of those people.

That is what happened to Anna in 1933. She was nine years old when it began, too busy with her schoolwork and toboganning to take much notice of political posters, but out of them glared the face of Adolf Hitler, the man who would soon change the whole of Europe starting with her own small life.

Anna suddenly found things moving too fast for her to understand. One day, her father was unaccountably missing. Then she herself and her brother Max were being rushed by their mother, in alarming secrecy, away from everything they knew home and schoolmates and well-loved toys right out of Germany

A Pink Front Door 13446505
James Muir has reason to be cautious about entering his own home. His wife Daisy just can't resist solving everyone else's problems. There's Delia Huxtable, a young unwed mother, and her daughter Evelyn ('my illegit'), Molly Raymond, who falls far too easily in love, Tibbs, an Eastern European refugee, and Daisy's old school friend Don ('The Hulk') and his family, for whom Daisy commandeers her neighbour Mrs Cavendish's top floor. All watched over, reluctantly, by Daisy's father, a retired Army man, her elderly cousins Ella and Marcia (the latter a Dame thanks to her World War I service), and the long-suffering James-not to mention her young son James Too ('That white thing? I thought it was a parcel. She drags that child around too much.')

But when Mrs Cavendish decides to enslave Don's wife to replace her lost servants and Molly turns her affections on James, Daisy is forced to re-think her priorities. First published in 1959 and reprinted here for the first time, A Pink Front Door is one of Stella Gibbons' most delightful and perceptive social comedies. This new edition features an introduction by twentieth-century women's historian Elizabeth Crawford.

'As usual Stella Gibbons tells a good story, combining a sharp eye for absurdities with pity for poor humans' Birmingham Post]]>

<![CDATA[Stories for Mothers and Daughters]]> 228496349
explanations of historical context in new introduction by Simon Thomasnewly typeset and corrected versions of rare stories by women writers from the British Library collectionsoriginal selection of short stories published together for the first time
Glorious chaos descends when a troop of daughters pay their mother a weekend visit; a mother buys her daughter a pet to teach her piety; and a daughter deposits unwanted suitors with her charmingly garrulous mother. Through the ages, teenage daughters perpetually rebel against maternal spectres of tradition, fallible mothers worry over the responsibility of imparting wisdom, and there are moments when time wears thin, and mothers slip back into being daughters. These stories often sketch the fault lines of this a debutante daughter feels herself growing invisible, a sanatorium patient begins to question if her mother really wants her to get better, and a mother silently haunts her house when her children are packed off for the holidays. From telling a fairy-tale to attending a funeral, this collection is a testament to the love, in all its complexities and aches, that passes through generations of women.

This anthology brings together an eclectic mix of female masters of the short-story format. Many of these stories first appeared in periodicals and printed collections and are now presented together for the first time as part of the Women Writers series. Side by side, these mothers and daughters navigate the changes of a turbulent twentieth century for women’s rights and societal attitudes to female behaviour. This collection brings together the talents of Richmal Crompton, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Jeanette Winterson, Jamaica Kincaid, A.S. Byatt, Inez Holden, Winifred Holtby, Janet Frame, E.M. Delafield, and Tillie Olsen to embrace the mother-daughter bond in all its lovely, imperfect forms.]]>

Silver Slippers 12870098 360 Temple Bailey Gina 5 vintage-romances
The relationship between simple, caring Joan and money-seeking, handsome Drew is the undercurrent of the story, while Joan's connection with the quiet and strong bookseller, Giles, runs parallel. Every single character is this book has stuck with me—Temple Bailey has a great talent for creating characters with an intense "real" quality that is unforgettable.

At one point, I had to stop reading this book because I was so invested and I had such a hard time distancing myself from the sorrow of one section of the story. But thankfully, once I returned to it, I began to love the book even more.

So many thanks to my vintage romance book buddy, Andrea (@sorrythankyou79) for finding and suggesting this author to me. She introduces me to the BEST vintage books!

If you enjoy themes of rags to riches, long lasting responsibilities, tender hearts, loyalty, friendship and/or discovering one's inner strength and basic needs, you will adore Silver Slippers. I can't wait to read more of this author's books!]]>

A beautiful and tender novel! This is my very first Temple Bailey book and I'm totally hooked. The writing is gently compelling with exquisite descriptions and finely drawn characters. Though this is not a cozy vintage romance like a Kathleen Norris novel, it's just as enjoyable and lovely to read.

<![CDATA[Tammy, Adventure in Squaw Valley]]> 229294195 216 Winifred E. Wise Gina 3 vintage-middle-grade
Adventure in Squaw Valley is similar to the vintage Barbie books I've read from Random House from the late 1950s/early 1960s. I feel like the Barbie books have better writing and characters with more depth, but this one was pretty decent. The blue monotone illustrations are wonderfully vintage and fun. They're definitely a great addition to this middle grade chapter book.

This title must be a sequel to the other book I own, Adventures in Hollywood, (which I hope to read next) because there was very little introduction to 16-year-old Tammy and the Turner family (Dad, Mom, Ted and Pepper). The reader just jumps right into the family's day and a slight obstacle with Mr. Turner over a upcoming trip to Squaw Valley for Cousin Dora's wedding.

It wasn't the best middle grade book I've ever read, but it kept my attention and I think I would have loved it when I was young...between 9-12. If you love vintage middle grade books, you should definitely give this book a try!

Although Spring Break takes place in France (so awesome!), the unfair situations that continually kept happening to Liz just got me down. Rene was also horrible until the last few pages and I feel like Liz had a bit TOO much patience with his utter rudeness and sneering. I'm not sure I could have been as understanding as she was under the circumstances. Ugh.

I always forget how horrible Jessica is in every way...irresponsible, selfish, greedy, vain and unkind. Illyrian Spring 7133793
Even though she is a renowned painter Lady Kilmichael is diffident and sad. her remote, brilliant husband has no time for her and she feels she only exasperates her delightful, headstrong daughter. So, telling no one where she is going. she embarks on a painting trip to the Dalmatian coast of Yugoslavia - in the Thirties a remote and exotic place. There she takes under her wing Nicholas, a bitterly unhappy young man, forbidden by his family to pursue the painting he loves and which Grace recognises as being of rare quality. Their adventures and searching discussions lead to something much deeper than simple friendship ...

This beautiful novel, gloriously evoking the countryside and people of Illyria, has been a favourite since its publication in 1935, both as a sensitive travel book and as [an] unusual and touching love story.]]>

About halfway through the book I remembered the ending, so that dampened my enjoyment just a little bit. Though, thankfully, not enough so that I had to stop reading it.

I adore rereading Agatha Christie books because it reminds me of how clever her plots are and how much I love the flow of her writing. I never get bored reading one of her mystery novels.

Ordeal by Innocence is a solid favorite. I always wish there were more sequels to her books so that I could keep following the characters she created. Highly recommended!]]>

Beatrix 349190
Beatrix Potter's childhood was characterized by a distinctly Victorian mixture of privilege and neglect. Her parents were distant and distracted, so she was left largely to her own devices. She found companionship in nature, in the small animals she met in the family's garden and in the countryside on summer visits. And she found happiness in drawing and writing stories about her animal friends, later the inspiration for The Tale of Peter Rabbit and her twenty-two other books.

Beatrix Potter's own words, taken from her letters and journals, are incorporated in Jeanette Winter’s book -- just slightly larger than Beatrix Potter’s little books -- and this portrait pays a glowing tribute to the grande dame of children’s literature.]]>

A small, succinct and pleasant book about Beatrix Potter. Even though the book itself shows a very unhappy girl and is a slightly somber and sad story, I felt like the narrative was true to the life she led. Towards Zero 2460127 184 Agatha Christie 0671823337 Gina 5 mysteries
There's so much to love about this particular plot—it's so clever, keeps you on the edge of your seat and includes a cast of unforgettable characters. Agatha Christie is the best at creating personalities that are so deep, interesting and so vividly drawn. In my opinion, no one does it better!

Both reading this book and listening to the audiobook are wonderful. The version narrated by Hugh Fraser is excellent—I could listen to his voice all day and feel happy and soothed. This title will continue to be a top 10 favorite forever.

It's not an exaggeration when I say that I've read this book over 20 times. It's probably more like 50. Towards Zero is one of my favorite Agatha Christie novels that does not include Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. I love Inspector Battle in almost every single book, but he really shines in this mystery.

Life Among the Savages 36083529 The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House? An ordinary housewife stuck in a big, shabby house with three marvelous, demanding children and a charming husband who takes detached interest in the chaos they generate? Yes, it's Shirley Jackson all right: the precision of her observations and prose is familiar, even if her humor is something of a surprise. Not until Anne Lamott's Operating Instructions in 1993 would another woman write with such honesty about the maddening multitude of trivial, essential chores that constitute a mother's life. But Jackson nailed it first, 40 years earlier, in her hilarious chronicle of life in a small Vermont town, where getting the kids to school on time requires the combined gifts of a drill sergeant and a lady's maid. The saga of her son's bumpy adjustment to kindergarten, frequently anthologized as Charles, is justly famous, but Jackson's account of the Department Store Trip from Hell (two kids, two toy guns, one doll carriage and doll, mayhem in revolving doors and escalators) is even funnier. Although her memoirs are as merciless as her ghost stories, you may not notice because you're laughing so hard. --Wendy Smith]]> 241 Shirley Jackson Gina 3 memoirs, house-books
But, sadly, the amount of detail in the repetitive conversations with her children just became too much for me. Instead of being amusing, these sections became irritating and I had a hard time finishing the book. Otherwise, the monotonous everyday activities were interesting.

Although I love my vintage edition (the cover art is so charming!), I'm not sure if I'll read it again. I'm very tempted to read the second memoir (since I own that as well) in hopes that the content is a little different. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Note: It's also probable that my sense of humor is just not the same as the author's and I just didn't "get it". A mix of a dry sense of humor with sarcasm is usually not as funny to me as it is to other people.

<![CDATA[Luckier Than Most: An Autobiography]]> 2858496 208 David Tomlinson 0340534842 Gina 3 memoirs
Things I Truly Admire About David Tomlinson:

Extraordinary ability to adapt to stressful and difficult situations
Sense of humor, loyalty and affection for his friends and family
Skill at being polite in even the most challenging circumstances
Continuing zest for life...from humble beginnings in a small, windowless room near Charing Cross looking for any sort of acting job to owning his own property in the country after years of theatrical success.

Favorite Parts From the Book:

- "Often Julie Andrews, a new mother, took me under her wing as well. She cooked for me while I occasionally held the baby."
- "On my birthday, May 7th, 1960, Audrey presented me with our third son—an especially beautiful, especially perfect little boy."
- When Walt Disney assisted in bringing in a consultant for David and Audrey's third child for possible deafness (which he did not have).
- Finding the best person to aid his autistic son when professionals were discouraging and unhelpful.
- Wonderful photographs in two sections of the book.

Overall, I really appreciated learning about DT's life. It completely changed my view of him in the most positive way. Reading about the human being behind the actor is a powerful thing. I very much encourage you to give this book a try!

Many thanks to DSP for sending me an advance copy of this book to read and review! I'm almost always reading a Dean Street Press book and they never fail to delight me in some way :)

<![CDATA[The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rügen]]> 41976391 299 Elizabeth von Arnim Gina 3 summer, memoirs
Both Elizabeth and Her German Garden and The Solitary Summer (my fav!!) are absolutely wonderful, but I struggled to get through this third book in the "memoir trilogy". Several parts were truly gorgeous in both description of nature and clever conversations (or musings), but I generally did not find myself looking forward to picking up where I left off. (It doesn't usually take me three weeks to finish an EVA book.)

If it wasn't for the handy, pull-out map of Rügen at the front of the book and the crisp, snappy ending, I think I would have given this book 2.5 stars. I'm not sure if I'll read this book again, but I have to admit that I learned a lot about this island in Germany and it looks like a beautiful place. I believe a movie of Elizabeth's Adventures in Rügen could be glorious and very funny. Unfortunately, reading about her trip fell a bit short of the mark for me.

My Favorite Parts:
Second page where she’s describing Putbus!
“…there is nothing so absolutely bracing for the soul as the frequent turning of one’s back on duties.
“And then Gertrud, after having kept quiet all day, would burst into activities at night, unpack the hold-all, produce pleasant things like slippers, see that my bed was as I like it, and end by tucking me up in it and going away on tiptoe with her customary quaint benediction…
The very end of The First Day where she’s describing the ducks on the water.
“The native pillows are mere bags, in which feathers may have been once. LOL
In The Fifth Day chapter, the section where she is describing the little house on the sands. It starts with “Every hotel was full…
“Every morning comes the light and a fresh chance of doing better.
 The very last page!!! Perfect!!

I wish I had loved this book more! Elizabeth von Arnim is one of my all-time favorite authors, but I'm learning that she has two types of books. And, sadly, I find the more "humorous" books less enjoyable and more irritating (probably because my sense of humor is very different from hers). The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rügen is similar to The Caravaners and Father in tone—I liked these three books least so far.

I've really enjoyed the four Elizabeth Cadell books I've read so far, but this one wasn't quite as awesome as the others. Although I very much appreciated the vibrant, independent and intelligent Iris and her quiet, talented and capable older sister Caroline, I absolutely detested their brother Robert. The French school master, Michael Sheridan, also slightly irritated me with his obstinacy and cool, slightly arrogant manner. It felt strange to me that he is meant to be a love interest of Iris in this novel.

The Vine-Clad Hill 4390502 Mabel Esther Allan 0001642073 Gina 5 adored this lovely and fascinating Collins Seagull Library, book! I'm totally addicted to this series now—after reading two 5 star books, I'm SO excited to read more.

This charming Mabel Esther Allan story is about 18-year-old Philippa"Phillip" or aka "Pippa", which she despises—and her reluctant decision to help her snobbish and harassed Aunt Millicent. She agrees to help keep an eye on the Hamlin children (boisterous twins, Gay and Gorden, and painfully awkward and shy Tilda) while on the long trip from London to Bellinzona.

When they are all reunited with hardworking, but slightly oblivious Uncle Richard, who is working between Bellinzona and parts of Italy and Switzerland, the adventure really begins. When she's not busy guarding over the children and helping her aunt with chores and errands, Phillipa is able to snatch a little bit of time to enjoy the beautiful area before attending Cambridge in the fall.

This lovely story is full of hot summer sun, thunderstorms, harrowing situations with the children, meeting new friends, frustrating encounters with her older cousin Clem, sight-seeing trips to glorious churches and beautiful mountains. I fell in love with The Vine-Clad Hill on the very first page and I was so incredibly sad to reach the end. I wish there was a sequel so I could find out what happens to Phillip once she starts Cambridge.

Although I tend to read books in the season they're in, I loved reading this hot, summery little book during the coldest part of the winter. This was an absolute joy and I know I'll be reading it again soon! Highly recommended!]]>

The Making of a Marchioness 345560 The Making of a Marchioness follows thirty-something Emily who lives alone, humbly and happily, in a tiny apartment and on a meager income. She is the one that everyone counts on but no one goes out of their way to accommodate. This Cinderella-like story remains a much-loved favorite among many.

This book is followed by a sequel, The Methods of Lady Walderhurst. Later, the two novels were combined into Emily Fox-Seton.]]>

<![CDATA[Carney's House Party / Winona's Pony Cart (Deep Valley, #1 & #3)]]> 8108597 A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, To Kill a Mockingbird and Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy books. This beautiful combination edition of Carney's House Party and Winona's Pony Cart features a foreword by author Melissa Wiley and a never-before-published biography of Lovelace illustrator Vera Neville.

Carney's House Party: In the summer of 1911, Caroline "Carney" Sibley is home from college and looking forward to hosting a monthlong house party—catching up with the old Crowd, including her friend Betsy Ray, and introducing them to her Vassar classmate Isobel Porteous. Romance is in the air with the return of Carney's high school sweetheart, Larry Humphreys, for whom she's pined all these years. Will she like him as well as she once did? Or will the exasperating Sam Hutchinson turn her head?

Winona's Pony Cart: More than anything in the world, Winona Root wants a pony for her eighth birthday. Despite her father's insistence that it's out of the question, she's wishing so hard that she's sure she'll get one—at least, that's what she tells her friends Betsy, Tacy, and Tib. . . .]]>

It was so interesting reading about the relationships of "The Crowd" after they finished high school and went away to college. How refreshing it was to read that not all relationships are required to be romantic and that it's completely acceptable to have a male friend that you adore.

Following Carney, Bonnie, Isobel and Sam through each week of this special summer was fascinating and entertaining. I know I'll be reading this story again. And, I must say that I absolutely loved Sam Hutchinson—so generous, fun, friendly and helpful to all people. Such a winner!

Many thanks to my dear friend, Marjorie (@marjoriepaper on Instagram) for buddy reading this book with me. Reading this Maud Hart Lovelace together made it even more fun!]]>

A really lovely Deep Valley book! Although I'm mostly a huge fan of the early Betsy-Tacy stories when the girls were little, I found Carney's story to be incredibly relatable and enjoyable.

Black Woods Blue Sky 213243955 An unforgettable dark fairy tale that asks, Can love save us from ourselves?

Birdie’s keeping it together; of course she is. So she’s a little hungover sometimes, and she has to bring her daughter, Emaleen, to her job waiting tables at an Alaskan roadside lodge, but she’s getting by as a single mother in a tough town. Still, Birdie can remember happier times from her youth, when she was free in the wilds of nature.

Arthur Neilsen, a soft-spoken and scarred recluse who appears in town only at the change of seasons, brings Emaleen back to safety when she gets lost in the woods. Most people avoid him, but to Birdie he represents everything she’s ever longed for. She finds herself falling for Arthur and the land he knows so well. Against the warnings of those who care about them, Birdie and Emaleen move to his isolated cabin in the mountains on the far side of the Wolverine River.

It’s just the three of them in the vast black woods, far from roads, telephones, electricity, and outside contact, but Birdie believes she has come prepared. At first, it’s idyllic, but soon Birdie discovers that Arthur is something much more mysterious and dangerous than she could have imagined, and that like the Alaska wilderness, a fairy tale can be as dark as it is beautiful.]]>

<![CDATA[Bloody Instructions: An Antony Maitland Mystery (THE ANTONY MAITLAND MYSTERIES Book 1)]]> 220388383 “Miss Bell found him, said Antony. “That was about fifteen minutes after I got there. She let out a yell that brought us all running. He’d been stabbed in the back

Who had the effrontery to fatally stab James Winter, a mild and highly respectable London solicitor, as he was inoffensively taking tea in his office?

The possibilities are plentiful, but police suspicion lands on a temperamental Shakespearean actor, Joseph Dowling, whose estranged wife the old man had been representing in her divorce action. The larger-than-life star of London’s latest hit production of Macbeth, Dowling not only had a motive for murder, he had a dagger to draw as well. These actors!

Now it may well be the last act for Dowling in his newest role—criminal defendant—unless brilliant barrister-sleuth Antony Maitland and his famed courtroom performer uncle, Sir Nicholas Harding, can put the spotlight on the real killer in this, Sara Woods highly-praised debut detective novel.

This gripping courtroom drama from 1962 features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

“This is just the sort of book I enjoy a good detective story, with human characters and told with freshness and an amusing good humor. - Francis Iles, author of Malice Aforethought]]>

Miss Hickory 3201396 123 Carolyn Sherwin Bailey 0670479411 Gina 3 childrens-books
I'd read that many people love this book and I was really hoping that I would, too. Maybe it's a book that you need to read while you're young to appreciate?? I hope that's the case because I truly struggled to return to this book and to finish it. Very disappointing.

The story of Miss Hickory and her quest to find a new home over the winter took place in New Hampshire (where I live now), so that was a pleasant surprise. I also thought the ending was sweet. But, overall, I thought that the characters were not very likable and they all seemed to have a "chip" on their shoulder or a strange, slightly unfriendly attitude towards each other.

If this is a favorite of yours, I'd love to know. Maybe I missed or misunderstood the parts that make it special. Please comment below if you don't mind sharing your thoughts with me :)

Many thanks to my dearest friend, Liz (@pony.books on Instagram), for buddy reading this book with me. It had been on my shelf for at least two years and I was glad to finally read it. ]]>

I liked this book but, sadly, it wasn't a great choice for me. The illustrations are wonderful and often amusing, but I found the story to be a little irritating and not at all happy, funny, or joyful.
