He is disgusted by the way humans look, what they eat, the wars they witness on the news, and totally baffled by such concepts of love and family. But as time goes on, he starts to realize there may be more to this weird species than he has been led to believe. He drinks wine, reads Emily Dickinson, listens to Talking Heads, and begins to bond with the family he lives with, in disguise. In picking up the pieces of the professor's shattered personal life, the narrator sees hope and redemption in the humans' imperfections and begins to question the very mission that brought him there--a mission that involves not only thwarting human progress...but murder.]]>

Piercing 830979 A pulsating psycho-thriller from Ryu Murakami, author of In the Miso Soup

A renaissance man for the postmodern age, Ryu Murakami; a musician, filmmaker (Tokyo Decadence), TV personality, and award-winning author; has gained a cult following in the West. His first novel, Almost Transparent Blue, won Japan's most coveted literary prize and sold over a million copies, and his most recent psychosexual thriller, In the Miso Soup, gave readers a further taste of his incredibly agile imagination. In Piercing, Murakami, in his own unique style, explores themes of child abuse and what happens to the voiceless among us, weaving a disturbing, spare tale of two people who find each other and then are forced into hurting each other deeply because of the haunting specter of their own abuse as children.

The lack of communication between the characters is irritating but so real . As human beings , we are irritating, we do not communicate what we think and feel , and only when it¡¯s too late do we regret not saying what we wanted to say . We are disgusting , we are mentally unstable and we do everything we can to ruin our own lives . It is normal . ( probably not)

Favorite quotes:

¡°Generally I find men are a lot more concerned with limiting the freedoms of women than exercising personal freedom for themselves,¡±

¡°I mean, when you look at the lives men are really living, it¡¯s sad, Marianne says. They control the whole social system and this is the best they can come up with for themselves? They¡¯re not even having fun.¡±

¡°Is the world such an evil place, that love should be indistinguishable from the basest and most abusive forms of violence? ¡±

¡°Not for the first time Marianne thinks cruelty does not only hurt the victim, but the perpetrator also, and maybe more deeply and more permanently. You learn nothing very profound about yourself simply by being bullied; but by bullying someone else you learn something you can never forget.¡±

Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams¡ªinvasive images of blood and brutality¡ªtorture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It¡¯s a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law and sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that¡¯s become sacred to her. Soon their attempts turn desperate, subjecting first her mind, and then her body, to ever more intrusive and perverse violations, sending Yeong-hye spiraling into a dangerous, bizarre estrangement, not only from those closest to her, but also from herself.

Celebrated by critics around the world, The Vegetarian is a darkly allegorical, Kafka-esque tale of power, obsession, and one woman¡¯s struggle to break free from the violence both without and within her.

The Husbands 193781998 An exuberant debut, The Husbands delights in how do we navigate life, love, and choice in a world of never-ending options?

In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you¡¯ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually?living?]]>

¡°Being happy to be single had felt obligatory, a statement of feminism or autonomy or just a way to head off coupled friends who she didn¡¯t want feeling sorry for her. The weight of that requirement had made it difficult, sometimes, to figure out how she really felt.¡±

The only problem? Her would-be leading man is her new friend¡¯s boyfriend.

There¡¯s nothing worse than being in love with someone you can¡¯t have...or at least, she thinks it¡¯s love.

But if that¡¯s true, why can¡¯t she stop fantasizing about someone else, specifically the cocky blond athlete with the world¡¯s biggest ego (and greatest dimples)?

Blake Ryan is¡ªwas¡ªa college football star who shocked the sports world when he quit after his third national championship. Instead of dealing with the fallout, he escapes to Shanghai, where he vows to keep life simple.

No football. No commitments. No romance.

But no matter how hard he tries, he can¡¯t keep a certain beautiful brunette off his mind...or out of his heart.

What starts as a physical attraction develops into something much deeper as Blake and Farrah get swept up in the magic of Shanghai¡ªand each other. But they only have one year, and there are forces outside their control that threaten to rip them apart.

Can their relationship survive the test...or was it just not meant to be?

WARNING: This is the first book in a duet. It's a full-length novel with no sudden cliffhangers, but Blake and Farrah¡¯s story concludes in book two, If the Sun Never Sets, which takes place five years later.

If We Ever Meet Again is a steamy strangers to friends to lovers romance. Recommended for 18+ due to adult language and explicit content.]]>

And the "Maze" is where you look for what you want ¡ª the organisation you work in or the family or community you live in.

<![CDATA[The Vile Village (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #7)]]> 8488208
Nobody in their right minds would listen to this particular book about the lives of Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire on purpose, because each dismal moment of their stay at the village of V.F.D. has been faithfully and dreadfully recorded on this CD.
I can think of no reason why anyone would want to listen to a book containing such unpleasant matters as migrating crows, an angry mob, a newspaper headline, the Duluxe Cell, and some very strange hats.
I also shouldn't mention the interactive features of the CD, which include:
A perplexing word game
Photos from The Lemony Snicket Archives
Art from The Brett Helquist gallery
It is my solemn and sacred occupation to research each detail of the Baudelaire children's lives and write them all down, but you may decide to do some other sacred and solemn thing, such as listening to another book instead.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket]]>

Daddy Daughter Day 51650700 Ask any father, or any daughter--the relationship between dads and daughters is special, and vitally important.

To a whole generation of filmgoers, Jeff Bridges is "the Dude," but to a more important group of people he is "Dad." The actor-musician-artist and one of his real-life daughters have teamed up to produce a book to inspire fathers and daughters--and whole families--to find the joy and closeness in their relationships.

When Belle announces to Dad that this day is "Daddy Daughter Day," it sparks a series of adventures that turns the house and the backyard into a clay work shop, a beauty parlor, and even a circus, with Mom and little brother Sammie getting involved!

Written by Isabelle Bridges-Boesch, and illustrated by Jeff himself, this is a book for daughters, fathers, and families to treasure all their lives!]]>

I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log.

The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons.

I have promised to write down the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven't, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection.

Hanya Yanagihara's writing style is DELICIOUS. I want some of that in every book I'm reading!!

This book was heavy but so important . I feel like only the people who are triggered by the content , and who haven't probably checked the trigger warnings, would dislike this book .
I personally didn't cry but I was angry , sad , disgusted and shocked by so many things. This book has given me the space to reflect on childhood trauma and how it is very difficult to change someone's ideas about themselves if they were taught and had experienced nothing but horrible things in their childhood.
Overall , This was very good and please check the trigger warnings .]]>

Twisted Hate (Twisted, #3) 60618028
Gorgeous, cocky, and fast on his way to becoming a hotshot doctor, Josh Chen has never met a woman he couldn't charm - except for Jules f**king Ambrose.

The beautiful redhead has been a thorn in his side since they met, but she also consumes his thoughts in a way no woman ever has.

When their animosity explodes into one unforgettable night, he proposes a solution that'll get her out of his system once and for all: an enemies with benefits arrangement with simple rules.

No jealousy.
No strings attached.
And absolutely no falling in love.

***

Outgoing and ambitious, Jules Ambrose is a former party girl who's focused on one thing: passing the attorney's bar exam.

The last thing she needs is to get involved with a doctor who puts the SUFFER in insufferable . . . no matter how good-looking he is.

But the more she gets to know him, the more she realizes there's more than meets the eye to the man she's hated for so long.

Her best friend's brother.
Her nemesis.
And her only salvation.

Theirs is a match made in hell, and when the demons from their past catch up with them, they're faced with truths that could either save them . . . or destroy everything they've worked for.

Twisted Hate is a steamy enemies with benefits/enemies to lovers romance. It's book three in the Twisted series but can be read as a standalone.

Warning: It contains explicit content and profanity. Recommended for 18+]]>

<![CDATA[The Wide Window (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #3)]]> 438492
If you have not read anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you read even one more sentence, you should know this: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted; but their lives, I am sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one may be the worst of them all. If you haven't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book will probably fill you with despair. I will continue to record these tragic tales, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yourself whether you can possibly endure this miserable story.

I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.

In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again.

I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.

Struggling to cope with his loss, Yunjae retreats into silent isolation, until troubled teenager Gon arrives at his school and begins to bully Yunjae.?

Against all odds, tormentor and victim learn they have more in common than they realized. Parker Pyne Investigates 278237
Curious? Then you're invited to read ... 'Parker Pyne Investigates'. In the US, known as, 'Mr. Parker Pyne, Detective'. Two titles, same great short stories. In fact 12 of them!

Our detective's personal ad posed a simple question, 'Are you happy? If not, consult Mr. Parker Pyne'. The answer was a resounding 'I am not happy' for a jealous wife who suspects her husband of infidelity, for a lonely widow driven to assume a new identity, for a distraught mother whose son has been kidnapped, and for a strangely reclusive bride-to-be. But what sort of detective would solicit in the personal column? The sort who has a knack for investigating affairs of the heart. For therein lie the darkest motives for murder. And they are proving most lucrative for the hopelessly romantic, and highly suspicious, Parker Pyne.

The 12 stories are: 1. The Case of the Middle-Aged Wife, 2. The Case of the Discontented Soldier, 3. The Case of the Distressed Lady, 4. The Case of the Discontented Husband, 5. The Case of the City Clerk, 6. The Case of the Rich Woman, 7. Have You Got Everything You Want?, 8. The Gate of Bagdad, 9. The House at Shiraz, 10. The Pearl of Price, 11. Death on the Nile, and 12. The Oracle at Delphi.

Librarian's note #1. the short story, Death on the Nile in this compilation starring Parker Pyne, should not be mistaken with the novel, Death on the Nile starring Hercule Poirot. Both by Christie.

Librarian's note #2: there are two more Parker Pyne stories in other collections. The stories are titled: 'The Regatta Mystery' and 'Problem at Pollensa Bay'. Including these two, there are 14 Pyne stories for your reading pleasure.

Librarian's note #3: this is the entry for the collection of 12 short stories, "Parker Pyne Investigates' ('Mr. Parker Pyne, Detective'). Entries for each of the individual stories are located elsewhere on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. All 14 can be found by searching Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ for: 'a Parker Pyne Short Story'.]]>

As a huge fan of the TV show I thought there would be some similarities between the series and the book . Turns out there was barely any resemblance except for the description of the house and what it does . I think the first half of this book was better , but I still enjoyed it. It definitely won't be my last read from the author .

Pepper Street is a really nice, safe California neighborhood. The houses are tidy and the lawns are neatly mowed. Of course, the country club is close by, and lots of pleasant folks live there. The only problem is they knocked down the wall at the end of the street to make way for a road to a new housing development. Now, that¡¯s not good¡ªit¡¯s just not good at all. Satirically exploring what happens when a smug suburban neighborhood is breached by awful, unavoidable truths, The Road Through the Wall is the tale that launched Shirley Jackson¡¯s heralded career.

With more than 1,700?titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Every day I clean the Winchesters¡¯ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew¡¯s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it¡¯s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina¡¯s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina¡¯s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it¡¯s like. But she soon finds out¡ and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it¡¯s far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don¡¯t know who I really am.

They don¡¯t know what I¡¯m capable of¡

An unbelievably twisty read that will have you glued to the pages late into the night. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train won¡¯t be able to put this down!]]>
