review:
Both my 5 year old and I thoroughly enjoyed this book about celebrating Passover with neighbors. The plot was straightforward with a sweet message and the characters felt so alive because of all the ancillary details. The plot was about a girl named Mia who admires her adventurous and generous neighbor Edie Rose so when Edie needs help Mia organizes to make a great seder. But the characters were treated with more depth by all the well-placed details - Edie was a world traveller and clearly fiercely independent. Mia's mom works late so Mia stays with Edie sometimes. People in the building love Edie and love their yearly tradition of having a seder at Edie's house. The characters and the community are so vivid especially for a children's book. Plus, highlighting the aspect of the Passover story where the Jews take a journey out of Egypt as a way for Mia to connect with Edie's adventures was very clever.

Early morning and a ruffle of feathers,

A shadow gliding through the backyard.

High above your house Father Hawk circles, sharp eyes searching for prey. From the front porch, you watch.

Swoosh!

He dives after chipmunks, crows, sparrows, squirrels.

Screech!

<![CDATA[The Loves of My Life: A Sex Memoir]]> 211003842
In this peerless memoir, the 85-year-old “paterfamilias of queer literature (New York Times) recounts the sixty-plus years of sexual escapades that have inspired his many masterpieces. He explores the sex he had with other closeted boys in 50s Midwest, with women as a young man trying to be straight, the sex he's paid for and been paid for, sex during the Stonewall and HIV eras, and in the age of the apps. Through stories of transactional sex, mutual admiration, open relationships, domination, submission, love, and loss, he paints an indelible portrait of queer history in America and abroad in a way only someone who has lived through it can.

Written with White's signature honesty, irreverence, and wit, The Loves of My Life is the culmination of this legend's life and work, a delightful and moving tour of over seventy years of being unabashedly gay and in love with love in all its forms.]]>

<![CDATA[Your Comrade, Avreml Broide: A Worker's Life Story]]> 218654782 A working-class radical revolutionary's tale—penned by a prominent union leader—now available in English.

Written in 1944 by Ben Gold, the president of the Furriers Union, this working-class, coming-of-age novel traces the family origin, immigration, and radicalization of an everyman named Avreml Broide. Mirroring Gold's own life, Avreml's story begins entangled in a complex intergenerational social and criminal community in Bessarabia just after the turn of the twentieth century. Personal dramas drive a young Avreml to New York City in his young adult years, where he finds a job in the fur industry and devotes himself entirely to his union, party, and the fight against fascism, often to the detriment of his personal life and relationships. Through strikes, dissidence, and finally on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, Avreml's journey presents the fascinating ambiguity of subsuming the self in service to party discipline.

With bold and stimulating illustrations by William Gropper, Annie Sommer Kaufman's translation brings Gold's emotionally rich narrative forward to reveal some of the most dramatic conflicts in America's suppressed Communist history. This novel offers a powerful counternarrative to histories and narratives of Jewish immigration that emphasize materialist American dreams and upward class mobility. Your Comrade, Avreml Broide offers an enticing mix of fact and fiction to demonstrate the personal risks, revolutionary dreams, and heartaches of Yiddish-speaking American Communists.]]>

This was a cute didactic tale about a chipmunk secretly collecting nuts for a squirrel who does not want to except anyone's charity. My 5 year old was very engaged by the colorfully illustrated animals and the idea of doing something secretly. I appreciated that the book sweetly described levels of charity: not only was Hanina the chipmunk collecting nuts to give to someone else but also she was doing it in a way that would not embarrass the recipient - an increase in empathy which imparts wisdom. Although, I can't guarantee my kid understood the lesson completely sweet books like these create touchstones for when an opportunity for considering charity options comes up in our life.

The cute and fun illustrations, the plot about helping aliens get to a birthday party, and the physical interaction with the book all combined to be a clever and interactive way to learn about human bodies. This book should be a shining example of how to make a great book to teach kids science.

On The Origin of Species 41081316 The first ever picture-book retelling of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species.

'A long, long time ago, before humans even existed, the living world looked very different from how it looks today.'

For most of human history, people believed that everything in the world was created at once. But scientists started to challenge that idea and in 1859 Charles Darwin, a naturalist and biologist, wrote a famous book called On the Origin of Species that revolutionised the way that we have understood evolution ever since.

Now molecular biologist and illustrator Sabina Radeva has recreated Darwin's most famous work as a beautifully illustrated book. The stunning pictures bring the theory of evolution to life for young readers, and anyone who wants to learn about evolution.

Pulling together Darwin's observations from his travels around the world and his ground-breaking explanation of how species form, develop, and change over hundreds of thousands of years, On The Origin of Species is as relevant and important now as it ever was.

A very important project, most beautifully realised. Sabina Radeva's thoughtful text and gorgeous pictures together tell the story of On The Origin of Species, and of Evolution itself, with clarity, humour and great charm. - Emma Darwin

This was a playfully illustrated introduction to Darwin's theory of evolution. The illustrations captivated my 5 year old and, although some of the concepts would be better suited for people a little older, some of the concepts did sink in. Illustrations that demonstrated creatures changing via evolution and how diverse living things are related to each other made an impression. This probably would work as a good primer even for high school biology students - I refined my understanding of selective breeding versus natural selection.

review:
The magic of this book is that the text and the illustrations very accurately and joyfully depict the suspense and thrill of taking a rollercoaster for the first time. The book precisely contains itself within the phases of waiting in line, boarding the rollercoaster, the quickness of the ride itself, and then exiting - nothing more, nothing less. The illustrations have Norman Rockwell style details of the variety of people in line for the roller coaster. Another fun aspect is that although by the end there is sort of a focus on one pair of the passengers a reader can follow any of the roller coaster passengers as they are mixed in within the line and finally as they ride and react to being on the roller coaster. The simplicity of the story made it engaging and exciting for my 4 year old and the depth of the illustrations made it engaging for me.

An excellent and accessible adaptation of a Yiddish Folktale about a skeptic learning that holiness comes from acts of generosity. My toddler was engaged by the cute illustrations and enjoyed watching the Litvak follow the Rabbi around to discover if he really talks to G-d. This book was awesome for me because I am a skeptic and the story has a clever openness - showing how serving the poor could be considered the holiest way to speak to G-d or it can demonstrate serving the poor is just the most righteous thing to do with nothing more miraculous than that. In addition when reading this book to my toddler on the train someone we did not know wanted to know what story it was so that was my indication it has wide appeal.

Prophet Song 158875813
On a dark, wet evening in Dublin, scientist and mother-of-four Eilish Stack answers her front door to find the GNSB on her step. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police are here to interrogate her husband, a trade unionist.

Ireland is falling apart. The country is in the grip of a government turning towards tyranny and Eilish can only watch helplessly as the world she knew disappears. When first her husband and then her eldest son vanish, Eilish finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a collapsing society.

How far will she go to save her family? And what or who is she willing to leave behind?

Exhilarating, terrifying and propulsive, Prophet Song is a work of breathtaking originality, offering a devastating vision of a country at war and a deeply human portrait of a mother’s fight to hold her family together.]]>

This book was incredibly fun and detailed. I have never experienced such layered and captivating flap-lifting - in this book they are nested to reveal more and more detail about the structures that are getting constructed. For example, in the sky scraper construction first we lifted the flap to make the building taller, then we lifted a smaller flap at the base showing how the foundation was built, then we lifted a flap to make the elevator go up the side of the building and deliver materials, and so on. My toddler was completely engaged with all the details. The depth of all the nested flap lifting was truly fascinating and I learned a ton too.

Byron Barton's illustrations are so direct depicting very specific components, like the sleeping chambers of a space shuttle, that captivate my toddler's imagination. My toddler asked "When can we go to space?". I like reading any of Barton's books with a really cold tone because it suits the nearly expressionless quality of the people.

Giant Giant 58667565
Every day, a giant spreads terror among the villagers of a peaceful town. He commands them to wash his underwear and to cook large feasts for him, or else he will stomp on the entire village! This demanding giant does not seem to have a worry in the world. But his misfortune is about to strike, as a giant even more gigantic than him is about to take over!

“Hewitt’s bold covers, special sight gags and appealingly retro, poster-art style are a winning match for this picture book’s timely message about a giant bully who threatens to stomp out all the â€peaceful little peopleâ€ in a â€peaceful little place.’â€ â€ New York Times

“This quirky but straightforward story presents a playful, literal representation of what it means when a bully â€steps all overâ€ others, and the positive change a hand extended in friendship can inspire . . . A plainspoken tale of the relativity of size and power, this belongs on shelves.â€ â€ School Library Journal]]>

I was in awe at how this book accurately introduced the gigantic topic of Earth's orbit, the planets, our solar system, our galaxy, and finally the universe. The book covers each by scaling up from a toddler sleeping in a bed to the earth orbiting the sun, to the other planets in our solar system (which prompted my toddler to sing the planets song he learned in preschool), to our solar system being a part of the Milky Way Galaxy, and finally to the amazing fact that there are billions of other stars and galaxies in our unfathomably large universe. The illustrations were perfectly sweet and cute but even the photos of the sun, the earth, and stars at the end captured my toddler's curiousity.

Flat color and thick exciting lines made this very engaging for my toddler. This is an adorable story about a house that gets filled with chickens. The illustrations are busy with a lot of detail and so much to explore way beyond the text of the book. It is extra heartwarming because the couple in the book are two men. Plus, it is a children's story about a couple who do not have children and there are no children in the book. Reading this book to my 3 year-old son makes me so happy and he loves it too. I love it because it depicts the natural world of the Pacific Northwest with specificity - rather than a generic forest the plants and animals are from the observed landscape. I love it because Little Witch Hazel has hairy legs when she dips them in the cool river, because there is a Mousepapa taking care of mouselings, because there is a fairy with a beard who wears a dress, because the illustrations look like wood cut prints with limited color palette, and because my son looks at the natural world with more wonder. My son frequently requests the Fall story "The Haunted Stump" but enjoys the entire book and loves to say "Otis" when we see the owl.

This is a book you READ ALOUD to find out just how smart your tongue is. The first time you read it, don't go fast! This Fox is a tricky fox. He'll try to get your tongue in trouble.

Dr. Seuss gives fair warning to anyone brave enough to read along with the Fox in Socks, who likes to play tongue-twisting games with his friend Mr. Knox.

"Here's an easy game to play. Here's an easy thing to say.... New socks. Two socks. Whose socks? Sue's socks."

But Mr. Fox Socks isn't about to let Knox off so easy. Soon Goo-Goose is choosing to chew chewy gluey blue goo, while tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle (in case you were wondering, that's called a "tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle"). Mr. Knox gets exasperated: "I can't blab such blibber blubber! My tongue isn't made of rubber." But he catches on to the game before it's all through.

One of Dr Seuss' best, this must-read-aloud classic is guaranteed to get many giggles out of readers young and old.

Up on the hill, Wallaby licks a puddle’s last drop. Skink slips into the shade. Echidna hides in grass as dry as tinder. Under the hill, Wombat carves out a cave that’s all his own. Then—KABOOM!—lightning strikes.

Pete the Cat is laid back and cool. His lesson is always about going with the flow with such a chill and fun attitude. My child laughs and responds to this and other Pete the Cat books with enthusiasm. The message of going with the flow seems particularly relevant, although probably very hard to grasp, for a toddler.

review:
My child is always entertained by Stanley books and I enjoy the heavy outline, geometric, and flat illustrations. This Stanley book goes over the process of planting and harvesting wheat and features some exciting farm trucks and equipment. Another bonus to the Stanley books is that the first couple pages are just illustrations of the objects associated with the topic of the book - so in this one there are some pictures of farm tools like shovels, pitchforks, a scarecrow, and grain bags. We were able to look at the objects and name them together and often find them within the story.

The drawings were fun and fabulous. They had great ink brush and water color textures and harmonious repetition of triangle and square shapes. The story was not super clever but my toddler enjoyed the silliness of the trickery. Plus, because there was only two shapes, triangle and square, it helped him recognize the shapes easily.

I Remain in Darkness 1264267
An extraordinary evocation of a grown daughter’s attachment to her mother, and of both women’s strength and resiliency. "I Remain in Darkness" recounts Annie’s attempts first to help her mother recover from Alzheimer’s disease, and then, when that proves futile, to bear witness to the older woman’s gradual decline and her own experience as a daughter losing a beloved parent. "I Remain in Darkness" is a new high water mark for Ernaux, surging with raw emotional power and her sublime ability to use language to apprehend her own life’s particular music.]]>

And from There You Shall Seek 6308567
Drawing its title from Deuteronomy 4:29 And from there you shall seek the Lord your God, and you shall find Him if you search for Him with all of your heart and all of your soul and framed by the evocative metaphors of the Song of Songs, the essay charts the individual s search for God, a quest which culminates in the stage of devekut, cleaving to Him.

The human being initially seeks God by examining the natural and spiritual worlds. But this search fails; hence God must reveal Himself and express His will. Rabbi Soloveitchik explicates the contrast between these two different modes of experiencing the the natural consciousness, marked by freedom and creativity, and the revelational consciousness, marked by compulsion and discipline. The remainder of the work elaborates on this dialectic, exploring such themes as the imitation of God, devekut, mercy and justice, trust and fear, love and awe, the rule of intellect, elevation of the body, the perpetuity of God s word, and creation and revelation.

And From There You Shall Seek is a translation of Rabbi Soloveitchik's classic essay, U-Vikkashtem mi-Sham. Drafted in the 1940 s as a companion to his earlier treatise Halakhic Man, this powerful and wide-ranging work was published in Hebrew only in 1978.]]>

<![CDATA[On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World]]> 59883978 A crucial new lens on repentance, atonement, forgiveness, and repair from harm--from personal transgressions to our culture's most painful and unresolved issues

American culture focuses on letting go of grudges and redemption narratives instead of the perpetrator's obligations or recompense for harmed parties. As survivor communities have pointed out, these emphases have too often only caused more harm. But Danya Ruttenberg knew there was a better model, rooted in the work of the medieval philosopher Maimonides.

For Maimonides, upon whose work Ruttenberg elaborates, forgiveness is much less important than the repair work to which the person who caused harm is obligated. The word traditionally translated as repentance really means something more like return, and in this book, returning is a restoration, as much as is possible, to the victim, and, for the perpetrator of harm, a coming back, in humility and intentionality, to behaving as the person we might like to believe we are.

Maimonides laid out five steps: naming and owning harm; starting to change/transformation; restitution and accepting consequences; apology; and making different choices. Applying this lens to both our personal relationships and some of the most significant and painful issues of our day, including systemic racism and the legacy of enslavement, sexual violence and harassment in the wake of #MeToo, and Native American land rights, On Repentance and Repair helps us envision a way forward.

Rooted in traditional Jewish concepts while doggedly accessible and available to people from any, or no, religious background, On Repentance and Repair is a book for anyone who cares about creating a country and culture that is more whole than the one in which we live, and for anyone who has been hurt or who is struggling to take responsibility for their mistakes.]]>

<![CDATA[Abolition Geography: Essays Towards Liberation]]> 55566309
Gathering together Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s work from over three decades, Abolition Geography presents her singular contribution to the politics of abolition as theorist, researcher, and organizer, offering scholars and activists ways of seeing and doing to help navigate our turbulent present.

Abolition Geography moves us away from explanations of mass incarceration and racist violence focused on uninterrupted histories of prejudice or the dull compulsion of neoliberal economics. Instead, Gilmore offers a geographical grasp of how contemporary racial capitalism operates through an “anti-state state that answers crises with the organized abandonment of people and environments deemed surplus to requirement. Gilmore escapes one-dimensional conceptions of what liberation demands, who demands liberation, or what indeed is to be abolished. Drawing on the lessons of grassroots organizing and internationalist imaginaries, Abolition Geography undoes the identification of abolition with mere decarceration, and reminds us that freedom is not a mere principle but a place.

Edited with an introduction by Brenna Bhandar and Alberto Toscano.]]>

I commute with my two year old three days a week on the train and this book has enhanced his appreciation of trains. Thanks to this book he recognizes that we ride on a diesel train and recites the part of the book about the metal wheels "rolling with a slick click-clack". He understands that a stopped train we see is waiting for a signal. He also notices the color of the train chairs when we board thanks to this book which has either read or blue chairs. The book is so informative, the rhymes are clever, and the drawings are cute and fun.

The bear’s hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no, some more elaborately than others. But just as the bear begins to despond, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear’s memory and renews his search with a vengeance. Told completely in dialogue, this delicious take on the classic repetitive tale plays out in sly illustrations laced with visual humor—and winks at the reader with a wry irreverence that will have kids of all ages thrilled to be in on the joke.]]>

Of all the Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle books this is my favorite and my son requests it the most of all of them. I like this one best because it restricts the animals to North American Endangered Species so it has a gentle ecological theme. The format of all of these wonderful books, in general, are also quite brilliant using repetitive language on each page to introduce the animals and then at the end the final two pages review all the animals with small pictures. As a learning device it is so effective and I love letting my son say all the animals at the end as I point to them.

<![CDATA[Strauss, Spinoza & Sinai: Orthodox Judaism and Modern Questions of Faith]]> 60333125
One of the most unexpected and provocative critiques of Spinoza comes from Leo Strauss. Strauss grew up in a nominally Orthodox home and emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930s. He taught at the University of Chicago and was one of the most influential political philosophers of the twentieth century until his death in 1973.

Though Strauss was not an Orthodox Jew, in a well-known essay that prefaced his study of Spinoza, he critically examines modern philosophy's challenge to traditional religion. There he argues that while the Enlightenment had failed to decisively refute Orthodoxy, at the same time, Orthodoxy could only claim to believe its core tenets were true but could not claim to know they were true. Strauss leaves the question at an impasse; both the Enlightenment and Orthodoxy rest on axioms that neither side can fully prove or fully refute.

Curiously, Strauss never asks Orthodox Jewish thinkers if his approach to defending Judaism against the claims of the Enlightenment is the same as theirs. This volume poses the question to a group of serious Orthodox Jewish thinkers in an attempt to find out if Orthodoxy has a better answer to the questions raised by Strauss than the one Strauss advanced on its behalf.

The seventeen essays in this volume use a variety of approaches, drawing on traditional primary Jewish sources like Scripture, Talmud, and Midrash; medieval rationalists like Maimonides; Enlightenment-era Orthodox sources; Jewish mystical writings like Kabbalah and Chasidut; modern philosophical movements including postmodernism and analytic philosophy; and contemporary Jewish Bible interpretation. While the answers differ, what unites these essays is the willingness to take Strauss question seriously and to provide “inside answers, that is, answers given by Orthodox Jews.

Much of modern thought tries to square the circle of how to live in a world without belief. The better question is whether it is possible to recover authentic religious belief in the modern world. This volume is an Orthodox Jewish attempt to answer that question, one that no serious person can approach with indifference.]]>

His electrifying portrait of Pakistan over a tumultuous decade captures the sweep of this strange, wondrous, and benighted country through the dramatic lives of nine fascinating individuals.

On assignment as the country careened between crises, Walsh traveled from the raucous port of Karachi to the salons of Lahore, and from Baluchistan to the mountains of Waziristan. He met a diverse cast of extraordinary Pakistanis—a chieftain readying for war at his desert fort, a retired spy skulking through the borderlands, and a crusading lawyer risking death for her beliefs, among others. Through these “nine lives he describes a country on the brink—a place of creeping extremism and political chaos, but also personal bravery and dogged idealism that defy easy stereotypes.

Unbeknownst to Walsh, however, an intelligence agent was tracking him. Written in the aftermath of Walsh’s abrupt deportation, The Nine Lives of Pakistan concludes with an astonishing encounter with that agent, and his revelations about Pakistan’s powerful security state. This book resembled my son's life. He has a little doggie stuffed animal named "Fruff" that he takes everywhere and it provides him great comfort. I loved reading this book to him and imagining that maybe it could help him manage times where he might get scared. He requested it many times so I am sure it resonated. The only way this could be closer to my son's life is if the baby in the book had two dads - this book had a daddy and a mommy.

My Car 63950
Using a very bold color palette with smooth lines and short text, My Car introduces young readers to Sam. Sam loves his car and proceeds to show how to take care of it, from changing the oil to getting gas. Sam also explains that cars have lights to see at night. Of course, he always follows traffic laws. In one happily busy scene, Barton shows Sam in his compact red car sitting in heavy traffic. And what does Sam do for a living? Drive a bus, of course!

This wonderfully vivacious picture book offers youngsters a look at ownership, responsibility, and possibility -- and the whole while, they are having fun! From Sam's easy demeanor and dialogue to the colorful illustrations, Barton confirms that the car is a wondrous thing.]]>

Baby loves this book. I think it is cool because it is a realistic list of the major steps that go into building a road. I wish there were more books that help us appreciate all the effort it takes to do public work projects. This book lists the planning of the road, the flattening of the roadbed, the pouring of the asphalt, the testing of the street lights, the planting of the trees along the road, and finally VROOM the road is ready. I like the style of the illustrations because although the pencil lines are definitive and angular the colors are wonderfully bright washes.

The baby and I both enjoyed the illustrations in this book. It really did not matter that the narrative is more like a list of things this little truck did. The illustrations had a playful quality because they were so generalized and so cute - look at the truck on the cover - a great representation of the essential qualities of a truck without the trailer. The colors had plenty of paint textures and variations adding a nice hand-crafted quality rather than completely sterile flat colors. Very cute and captivating.

This book was enjoyed by both the baby and I. The illustrations are very 1960s modernist with bright flat colors with no outlines. Every few pages displays various objects that have the same color. I really enjoyed the modernist graphic illustrations. It is a little dated because it uses the terms "fireman" and "policeman" rather than gender neutral language.

Boynton books are so ubiquitous it makes them less appealing BUT they generally really are pleasant and engaging for my little one. This one is particularly fun because it has some very cute illustrations of logic. On each page animals model a clothing and a turkey always wears the clothing wrong and says "OOPS". So you get pages that list things like "Blue Hat (illustration = animal correctly wearing blue hat), Green Hat (illustration = animal correctly wearing green hat), Yellow Hat (illustration = animal correctly wearing yellow hat, OOPS! (illustration = turkey standing on a hat)". My son thinks the oops part is so silly and fun. He particularly likes the page about pants and will flip to it as soon as he gets a hold of the book and he giggles.

I love the story in this book because it demonstrates the subjectivity of love. It is so sweet to read about how the baby hare tries to express how much he loves the papa hare and how the papa hare sweetly expresses his love for the baby in greater terms. Ever since my son was about a year old he has really enjoyed this book. This book is filled with illustrations that build scenes using flat bright colors with no outlines. It has the appearance of being cut paper. The bright colors and flat illustrations frequently seem to be the deciding factor to determine whether or not he will be engaged with a book at his age. I enjoy this book too because it introduces him to lots of hard working machines and the text has great rhythm. On car trips I have handed him this book and the illustrations alone entertained him.

Rounded corners, high-contrast black-and-white illustrations, and a glittering burst of colored foil on every page make this an ideal choice for the youngest learners.]]>

My child smiled and enjoyed the high contrast illustrations since he was 6 months old. There is hardly any text but the playful illustrations are so engaging. Even for me the adult reader, I have enjoyed exploring the subtlety needed to make effective and captivating thick lined illustrations with only three colors per image - black, white, and one metallic color. I love this book most of all because it made my son smile before I could ever figure out why he was so moved.

<![CDATA["Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!": Adventures of a Curious Character]]> 35167685 A New York Times bestseller—the outrageous exploits of one of this century's greatest scientific minds and a legendary American original.

Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, thrived on outrageous adventures. Here he recounts in his inimitable voice his experience trading ideas on atomic physics with Einstein and Bohr and ideas on gambling with Nick the Greek; cracking the uncrackable safes guarding the most deeply held nuclear secrets; accompanying a ballet on his bongo drums; painting a naked female toreador. In short, here is Feynman's life in all its eccentric—a combustible mixture of high intelligence, unlimited curiosity, and raging chutzpah.]]>

<![CDATA[Radical Hope: Ethics in the Face of Cultural Devastation]]> 335357 Shortly before he died, Plenty Coups, the last great Chief of the Crow Nation, told his story up to a certain point. “When the buffalo went away the hearts of my people fell to the ground, he said, “and they could not lift them up again. After this nothing happened. It is precisely this point that of a people faced with the end of their way of life that prompts the philosophical and ethical inquiry pursued in Radical Hope. In Jonathan Lear’s view, Plenty Coups story raises a profound ethical question that transcends his time and challenges us all: how should one face the possibility that one’s culture might collapse?

This is a vulnerability that affects us all insofar as we are all inhabitants of a civilization, and civilizations are themselves vulnerable to historical forces. How should we live with this vulnerability? Can we make any sense of facing up to such a challenge courageously? Using the available anthropology and history of the Indian tribes during their confinement to reservations, and drawing on philosophy and psychoanalytic theory, Lear explores the story of the Crow Nation at an impasse as it bears upon these questions and these questions as they bear upon our own place in the world. His book is a deeply revealing, and deeply moving, philosophical inquiry into a peculiar vulnerability that goes to the heart of the human condition.

187 Jonathan Lear 0674023293 David 0
Jonathan Lear made a clear case for how culturally devastating American colonial expansion was for the Crow people. He demonstrated that due to dwindling numbers and the shifting cultural paradigm of how battles were fought the Crow concept of a warrior was becoming obsolete. Instead of trying to conserve the Crow traditions exactly as they were passed down to him, Plenty Coups helped his people adapt their traditions to the new reality. Lear presented this phenomenon of cultural devastation and adaptation as something unique to the Native American experience which I found to be limiting for his larger exploration about how ethics shift as culture shifts.

Lear argues that ethics are a product of a culture. What a culture values and how that culture creates myths and morals flows into what they consider to be positive or negative behaviors in their everyday life. I found this very illuminating in considering how I am a product of my background and the stories that have been a part of my life. On top of that I was also able to apply some of the lessons of the adaptation after cultural decimation to my Jewish background. Jewish culture has had many shifts in tradition due to decimation, for example after the destruction of the second temple the sacrifices that were performed in person on a regular basis shifted to be simply written descriptions in prayer services. And that is an ancient shift - there of course have been many more adaptations to Jewish practice and beliefs in the face of major devastation such as the Holocaust. It made me wish Lear would have taken some time to exploring other situations of devastation and cultural adaptation in order to find commonality. The book started the path towards understanding how we can be resilient but it could have used a little bit of a wider scope.]]>

After the birth of my son I did not have a chance to finish this book. I got through about two thirds of the book and was very engaged by the premise. The premise of the book was an exploration about how to cultivate hope after a culture is completely decimated. The culture used as the only case study in the book was the Native American Crow Nation. The author highlighted the way that Plenty Coups, the Chief of the Crow Nation, assisted his tribe members in adapting to the decimation of their way of life due to displacement and sickness caused by European-American settlement.

The Seven Good Years 23399025
The seven years between the birth of Etgar Keret’s son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgar’s father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life.

What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgar’s three-year-old son’s impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds. There’s Lev’s insistence that he is a cat, releasing him from any human responsibilities or rules. Etgar’s siblings, both very different people who have chosen radically divergent paths in life, come together after his father’s shivah to experience the grief and love that tie a family together forever. This wise, witty memoir—Etgar’s first non-fiction book, and told in his inimitable style—is full of wonder and life and love, poignant insights, and irrepressible humor.]]>

Ceremony 52382

Tayo's quest leads him back to the Indian past and its traditions, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual, a curative ceremony that defeats the most virulent of afflictions -- despair.

244 Leslie Marmon Silko 0143104918 David 0 liminalfiction Ceremony has a lot to savor and unfortunately I did not give it the attention I would have liked. The novel is interspersed with poetry, Navajo lore, and the prose not only took me through the narrative but vividly to the Southwest United States on and around the Navajo Nation. The story is about a World War II veteran who struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and how he heals. But Leslie Marmon Silko transcends the specific story so seamlessly by fitting it within Navajo ceremonies and within a sense of timelessness specific to Native Americans. She powerfully asserted a continuum of time that long preceded European settlement and a vitality of Navajo lore and ritual that can overcome the White Supremacist ideology that persecuted (and continues to persecute) the Native Nations. I hope to take another look and explore this masterful novel again to explore the Navajo references, to savor the poetic structure, and deepen my understanding of Navajo heritage.]]> 3.79 1977 Ceremony
