Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die]]>

So I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would, but it is without a doubt, insanely overhyped. Yes, Xaden is hot. But Violet kinda sucks. The character development is all over the place, she has like 45 personalities and is very inconsistent, and every other side character just wasn’t important enough. You can tell that the author knew this was going to be turned into a tv series before it came out because that’s the flow of every scene. Seems like it was written to appeal to a tv audience. There were bouts of dialogue that literally made zero sense to me, like did not have a single clue wtf they were talking about. Also- the world building and exposition? So damn clunky and dumpy. Nothing stuck. I could tell it was supposed to be a big deal where the final setting of this book was, and the fact that Violet was there, but I could hardly recall what it even was. I don’t know. I’ve just read so much better.

Obviously I still enjoyed this, it was fun and easy. But just, lacking.

She’s good at achieving her goals

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.]]>

. But John Tucker is a God of a man. Seriously. I would have his babies. And I said that before I knew what the damn trope of this book was. He’s a fucking king. I liked Sabrina too, I understood where her mind was at a lot of the time. Avoidant attachment girlies rise up.

But as much as I love Tucker, all of these books just had something missing. I don’t even know what, but there was just a lack of depth, a lack of an ending (SERIOUSLY all of these books have the most rushed endings), and just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Did I still enjoy them? Totally. I went into these reads with low expectations and not expecting much depth or nuance so I was not underwhelmed or disappointed. Idk if I’ll continue on after this one, but I’m glad I read these. God knows I needed some light trash after The Boys of Tommen wreaked serious havoc on my heart and soul.

He knows how to score, on and off the ice...

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over...

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.]]>

Honest to god I blacked out reading this. I’m so serious. I drowned myself in this story AND WAS FINISHED WITHIN A DAY. This one flew by for me, especially the beginning. The entire story is Joey and Aoife. That’s it. Like they are everything and I loved Saving 6 for that exact reason. I had no CLUE I would love these characters the way I do now. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely was fond of them in B/K13, but you just don’t know Joey, and especially Aoife, on a deeper level. Yet.

This story was difficult. It hurt. Physically hurt my heart. It was so raw and painful and gutwrenching and yet I could not put it down. Because Saving 6 is equally just as beautiful, captivating, cheeky, and addicting- the balance between the love and the pain is just fantastic.

I have never read a relationship dynamic like the one Joey and Aoife have. They are fucking insane. Downright batshit, the both of them. And they are perfect for each other. Truly. Joey is such a beautifully broken character. The pain I felt for him countless times throughout this read was indescribable. Aofie is just a fucking queen. I love love love love them.

I knew close to nothing about Binding 13 when I picked this book up. When I picked this book up- 36 hours ago. Yeah. 600+ pages absolutely inhaled in 36 hours. That’s how much Shannon and Johnny and their story captivated me. So tragically, heart wrenchingly beautiful. It truly was close to perfect. There were a few scenes a very small number that I just couldn’t rock with. But I am able to reconcile with that unfortunate opinion quite easily because there was so much else to this story. Six hundred and some pages is no joke. For the overwhelming majority of this book, I felt as though we were seeing the perfect scenes, the perfect tidbits, and learning the right information at the right time. This book just flowed so well, in my opinion. The slow burn mutual pining was SO achingly good and these two characters are just so precious. So so precious and they both deserve the world and all its happiness.

I will be Nesta Archeron’s biggest advocate until the day I die. I knew I was going to enjoy A Court of Silver Flames; I was so eager to get into Nesta’s head and learn more about her, see what came of her and Cassian- and ACOSF absolutely delivered!! I highlighted countless lines in this story, large paragraphs of banter, and quotes that cut me to the bone. This was fantastic. If you don’t like Nesta your brain and my brain operate on completely different levels. I loved this story, I am so content with the ending, and I don’t have the slightest clue what to do with myself now that I read and caught up on this series in its entirety in less than two weeks.

Okay. I understand why this might be a lot of people’s least favorite. It’s not for every reader, this type of installment in the middle of a plot heavy series. But- I don’t give a singular fuck that people don’t like this book. I loved A Court of Frost and Starlight. I mean, I literally tore through it in 5 hours. Straight. This was exactly what was needed following the constant insanity of the first three books, just getting to see these characters healing, and getting to know them even more. Nesta. Nesta. Nesta. I fear I am her biggest advocate. I am CLAWING to start reading ACOSF. I know that shit is gonna rock my world. But yeah. To sum up my thoughts on this book, though:

I am not quite sure how that was 700 pages. I flew through this read with minimal effort. There was never a lull, never a scene that dragged, that didn’t have me poring over the words on pages. A Court of Mist and Fury was nothing but pure magic, a religious experience. A Court of Wings and Ruin took the development and revelations of that book and turned it into a nail biting and wildly entertaining war fantasy book. The characters introduced, from the High Lords to Miryam and Drakon and Jurian and Vassa and much more, fell seamlessly into this world and only made me more invested.

Feyre has undergone more trials than one human woman can carry in her heart. Though she's now been granted the powers and lifespan of the High Fae, she is haunted by her time Under the Mountain and the terrible deeds she performed to save the lives of Tamlin and his people.

As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre's hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin. While Feyre navigates a dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms. She might just be the key to stopping it, but only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future-and the future of a world in turmoil.

The end of ACOTAR definitely left me intrigued and suspicious of what might happen next- but g o d d a m n i t I could have never been prepared for the journey A Court of Mist and Fury was about to take me on.
I truly have no words for the way this story, this world, these characters and these relationships just permanently altered my brain chemistry. Like, I knew that a romance between Feyre and Rhysand is where the series would eventually go, but NONE of my preconceived notions or knowledge going into this read could’ve ever held a candle to what actually lay in these pages. A twisted and tortured anti-hero, who has convinced the world he is the manifestation of evil but is actually a warrior with the heart of a lion, always fighting to protect who and what he loves. A girl turned immortal deeply struggling with PTSD and fighting to piece herself back together, suddenly grappling with the immense power she has been gifted and turning into a BOSS ASS BITCH (thank god for Feyre’s development.) A mother FUCKING soulmate bond. A facade of horrible nightmares and evil to protect a land of art, dreams, beauty, and joy. A FOUND FAMILY at the heart of it all. Finally got around to reading this! I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. Overall this is a story I can get down with, but I had some issues on a more critical level. The relationships, particularly between Feyre and Tamlin (and kinda Rhysand) just didn’t feel, earned? I don’t know. I guess I like a little bit of grit and animosity to start off a relationship before either party reaches the “I would kill and die for you type of devotion that all of these characters just seemed to feel instantly. I wish Feyre had dealt with more internal conflict before feeling like Prythian was her home. I think overall, I just needed these characters, particularly Feyre, to be more deeply rooted in something- whether that be morals, conviction, or strong emotion I’m not sure, but the stakes of this story just felt a little bit unjustified at times. Alis coming in with the major lore drop halfway through the book really helped me feel more invested in this world as a reader, so maybe as the series goes on this will improve. Those are just my pretentious criticisms, though. ACOTAR was still wildly enjoyable and I will certainly be starting book 2 today! (Lowkey.. Tamlin is a sissy a little bit and he kinda irks me. Excited for more Rhysand).

<![CDATA[The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1)]]> 35068705
When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.]]>

Finally read a book after over a month long slump... Nikolai Lanstov might be my favorite person ever and I am now a Zoya stan. KOS was really interesting, I feel like Leigh went 0-100 with both the plot and the world building. The beginning was a bit of a struggle to get through, but I still found it all very interesting. Also this book made me love Nina 1000x more. Praying Nikolai doesn’t die in RoW :/

if you told a seventh grade drama class to write a play based on Harry Potter, this is what the final product would be. y’all, i LOVE Harry Potter. like so much. but this was absolutely painful to read. i had to force myself through. the characterizations were AWFUL. the only person who felt similar to the way they were in the series was the two second Hagrid cameo we got. scorpius and albus would’ve been such a cute couple. please don’t read this unless you want to see the most ridiculous storyline and all of these characters butchered. ugh.

Daisy Jones & The Six 40597810 Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.]]>

Vicious (Villains, #1) 40874032 A masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

<![CDATA[Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest]]> 18571
“I can tell you that some force within me rejected death at the last moment and then guided me, blind and stumbling—quite literally a dead man walking—into camp and the shaky start of my return to life.

In 1996 Beck Weathers and a climbing team pushed toward the summit of Mount Everest. Then a storm exploded on the mountain, ripping the team to shreds, forcing brave men to scratch and crawl for their lives. Rescuers who reached Weathers saw that he was dying, and left him. Twelve hours later, the inexplicable occurred. Weathers appeared, blinded, gloveless, and caked with ice—walking down the mountain. In this powerful memoir, now featuring a new Preface, Weathers describes not only his escape from hypothermia and the murderous storm that killed eight climbers, but the journey of his life. This is the story of a man’s route to a dangerous sport and a fateful expedition, as well as the road of recovery he has traveled since; of survival in the face of certain death, the reclaiming of a family and a life; and of the most extraordinary adventure of finding the courage to say yes when life offers us a second chance.

Praise for Left for Dead

“Riveting . . . [a] remarkable survival story . . . Left for Dead takes a long, critical look at Weathers is particularly candid about how the demanding sport altered and strained his relationships. USA Today

“Ultimately, this engrossing tale depicts the difficulty of a man’s struggle to reform his life. Publishers Weekly]]>

Slaughterhouse-Five 4981 Slaughterhouse-Five, an American classic, is one of the world’s great antiwar books. Centering on the infamous World War II firebombing of Dresden, the novel is the result of what Kurt Vonnegut described as a twenty-three-year struggle to write a book about what he had witnessed as an American prisoner of war. It combines historical fiction, science fiction, autobiography, and satire in an account of the life of Billy Pilgrim, a barber’s son turned draftee turned optometrist turned alien abductee. As Vonnegut had, Billy experiences the destruction of Dresden as a POW. Unlike Vonnegut, he experiences time travel, or coming “unstuck in time.

An instant bestseller, Slaughterhouse-Five made Kurt Vonnegut a cult hero in American literature, a reputation that only strengthened over time, despite his being banned and censored by some libraries and schools for content and language. But it was precisely those elements of Vonnegut’s writing—the political edginess, the genre-bending inventiveness, the frank violence, the transgressive wit—that have inspired generations of readers not just to look differently at the world around them but to find the confidence to say something about it.

Fifty years after its initial publication at the height of the Vietnam War, Vonnegut's portrayal of political disillusionment, PTSD, and postwar anxiety feels as relevant, darkly humorous, and profoundly affecting as ever, an enduring beacon through our own era’s uncertainties.]]>

To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or with the mortals she has come to love.]]>
