January 1918. Laura Iven was a revered field nurse until she was wounded and discharged from the medical corps, leaving behind a brother still fighting in Flanders. Now home in Halifax, Canada, she receives word of Freddie’s death in combat, along with his personal effects—but something doesn’t make sense. Determined to uncover the truth, Laura returns to Belgium as a volunteer at a private hospital. Soon after arriving, she hears whispers about haunted trenches, and a strange hotelier whose wine gives soldiers the gift of oblivion. Could Freddie have escaped the battlefield, only to fall prey to something—or someone—else?

November 1917. Freddie Iven awakens after an explosion to find himself trapped in an overturned pillbox with a wounded enemy soldier, a German by the name of Hans Winter. Against all odds, the two men form an alliance and succeed in clawing their way out. Unable to bear the thought of returning to the killing fields, especially on opposite sides, they take refuge with a mysterious man who seems to have the power to make the hellscape of the trenches disappear.

As shells rain down on Flanders, and ghosts move among those yet living, Laura’s and Freddie’s deepest traumas are reawakened. Now they must decide whether their world is worth salvaging—or better left behind entirely.]]>

4 stars, Katherine Arden only writes what she feels like writing, it doesn't follow any publishing trends, and still, I enjoyed her story and characters a lot, I could only say I wanted more, more of the "fantastical elements", especially one character haha, more romance maybe, if I can squeeze a good romance in everything, I will (I also know how well Katherine Arden writes subplot romances)

Intermezzo 208931300 An exquisitely moving story about grief, love, and family—but especially love—from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.

Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.

Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.

Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.

For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude—a period of desire, despair, and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.]]>

Dara.
Empress Jia, Prince Phyro and Pékyu Tanvanaki find themselves bound to paths they never would have chosen. Amid atrocity and subterfuge, they will discover that the Courage of Brutes is no substitute for the Grace of Kings, and that little separates the Grace of Kings from the Madness of Tyrants.

On both sides of the Wall of Storms, defeat's bitter tears mix with the fruits of knowledge new and ancient as two empires bound by blood and bone, by writ and iron, by time and custom, face a whirlwind that threatens to utterly consume them.

Catherine House 51934838 A story about a dangerously curious young undergraduate whose rebelliousness leads her to discover a shocking secret involving an exclusive circle of students . . . and the dark truth beneath her school’s promise of prestige.

You are in the house and the house is in the woods.
You are in the house and the house is in you . . .

Catherine House is a school of higher learning like no other. Hidden deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania, this crucible of reformist liberal arts study with its experimental curriculum, wildly selective admissions policy, and formidable endowment, has produced some of the world’s best minds: prize-winning authors, artists, inventors, Supreme Court justices, presidents. For those lucky few selected, tuition, room, and board are free. But acceptance comes with a price. Students are required to give the House three years—summers included—completely removed from the outside world. Family, friends, television, music, even their clothing must be left behind. In return, the school promises its graduates a future of sublime power and prestige, and that they can become anything or anyone they desire.

Among this year’s incoming class is Ines, who expects to trade blurry nights of parties, pills, cruel friends, and dangerous men for rigorous intellectual discipline—only to discover an environment of sanctioned revelry. The school’s enigmatic director, Viktória, encourages the students to explore, to expand their minds, to find themselves and their place within the formidable black iron gates of Catherine.

For Ines, Catherine is the closest thing to a home she’s ever had, and her serious, timid roommate, Baby, soon becomes an unlikely friend. Yet the House’s strange protocols make this refuge, with its worn velvet and weathered leather, feel increasingly like a gilded prison. And when Baby’s obsessive desire for acceptance ends in tragedy, Ines begins to suspect that the school—in all its shabby splendor, hallowed history, advanced theories, and controlled decadence—might be hiding a dangerous agenda that is connected to a secretive, tightly knit group of students selected to study its most promising and mysterious curriculum.]]>

<![CDATA[The Last Tale of the Flower Bride]]> 60847626
Once upon a time, a man who believed in fairy tales married a beautiful, mysterious woman named Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. He was a scholar of myths. She was heiress to a fortune. They exchanged gifts and stories and believed they would live happily ever after—and in exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past.

But when Indigo learns that her estranged aunt is dying and the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage . . . or their lives.

Combining the lush, haunting atmosphere of Mexican Gothic with the dreamy enchantment of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is a spellbinding and darkly romantic page-turner about love and lies, secrets and betrayal, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.]]>

So glad to have the sequel now so close to its release date, because I loved this ! The writing is excellent bc you can feel the pace of the story is controlled, while the reading feels fluid, and we have "characters moments", plot advancing, and battle scenes,..

The main character's journey feels "accomplished", I didn't think I was really attached until the end when I realized that yes indeed I was, the romance subplot was also a very good part of the story, (I do enjoy a fantasy with a touch of romance well done) as for the sequel, I don't really know what to expect but I'm excited^^]]>

Alone With You in the Ether 54453257
From Olivie Blake, the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, comes an intimate and contemporary study of time, space, and the nature of love. Alone with You in the Ether explores what it means to be unwell, and how to face the fractures of yourself and still love as if you're not broken.

CHICAGO, SOMETIME

Two people meet in the Art Institute by chance. Prior to their encounter, he is a doctoral student who manages his destructive thoughts with compulsive calculations about time travel; she is a bipolar counterfeit artist, undergoing court-ordered psychotherapy. By the end of the story, these things will still be true. But this is not a story about endings.

For Regan, people are predictable and tedious, including and perhaps especially herself. She copes with the dreariness of existence by living impulsively, imagining a new, alternate timeline being created in the wake of every rash decision.

To Aldo, the world feels disturbingly chaotic. He gets through his days by erecting a wall of routine: a backbeat of rules and formulas that keep him going. Without them, the entire framework of his existence would collapse.

For Regan and Aldo, life has been a matter of resigning themselves to the blueprints of inevitability—until the two meet. Could six conversations with a stranger be the variable that shakes up the entire simulation?]]>

<![CDATA[These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1)]]> 50892212
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

The Republic of Itreya is in chaos. Mia has assassinated Cardinal Duomo and rumors of Consul Scaeva’s death ripple through the street of Godsgrave like wildfire. But buried beneath those same streets, deep in the ancient city’s bones, lies a secret that will change the Republic forever.

Mia and her brother Jonnen must journey through the depths of the ancient metropolis. Their quest will take them through the Godsgrave underdark, back to the library of the Quiet Mountain and the poisoned blades of Mia’s old mentors, and at last the fabled Crown of the Moon. There, Mia will at last discover the origins of the darkin, and learn the destiny that lies in store for her and her world. But with the three suns now in descent, and Truedark on the horizon, will she survive?]]>

The Moon will soon return. Whether this heralds the destruction of humankind or something worse will depend on two women.

Essun has inherited the power of Alabaster Tenring. With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe.

For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late. She has seen the evil of the world, and accepted what her mother will not admit: that sometimes what is corrupt cannot be cleansed, only destroyed.

The remarkable conclusion to the post-apocalyptic and highly acclaimed trilogy that began with the multi-award-nominated The Fifth Season.]]>

This trilogy as a whole is 4 stars. It is different from what I usually read for this is very "adult".
The writing is great, a little confusing sometimes, in some chapters we aren't even told who the narrator is and what exactly it will lead to, but I think that English not being my maternal language impacted my reading ahah

The plot unfurls little by little from book 1 to book 3, we feel how much the author thought about this story and how to express it. Each character had a role and was interesting (tho the characters felt too "cold" at times for my taste), I was so curious to see how it would all end up.. and was pretty satisfied

Also the mystery regarding the "Seasons", and the revelations about the past, how it all came to be were sooo good, anyway I really enjoyed reading this and of course recommend it, if it sounds interesting to you!]]>

I really loved the characters and the setting in the previous book, and this is still true in this one, but I felt like I was just carried from POV to POV without a finish line in mind, I liked what I read and wasn't bored, but then I didn't have the will to pick up the book again..

Anywaaay I love these characters, Evie, Theta, Henri (best boi, I was really emotional with one of his scenes it didnt happen in a long time), Sam, Ling^^

The BIG threat is more and more clear and I will read the next book with pleasure I just hope the pace will work better for me ahah]]>

I'm so frustated with myself bc I took so loong to read this although it was pretty short and entertaining ;

The chapters are short and the pov is a little confusing bc it changes from the "ghost", onto the thoughts of the other characters like Tark and his cousin Callie. I said it's a little confusing but really the writing made it natural so that is a good point!

It sure was gruesome and spooky (perfect for this month) and had no romance, all of this would normally not please me lol, but here the story was nonetheless interesting and I wanted to know the end^^

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for...]]>

It was a really strong first book, tho its 500+ pages felt long (especially the first half), but I never was "bored".
The author introduces nicely this fantasy world and its characters, mixing fantasy, "djinn" (or Daevas), mythology, religion, politics, (even some romance) very well.
I really liked Nahri, she pretty much raised herself on the streets and counts on her wits to survive, she can be cunning and brave and is thrown into this unknown world has to navigate politics and powers.. I can't wait to see her more in the future books.

A lot is revealed at the end and in the epilogue, making me très interested in reading the next book^^]]>

Salut đź’ś

So Sorcery of Thorns....

The writing is nice, with a lot of descriptions of the surroundings, the magical books and libraries, the city, etc.
Although the end dragged a little in my opinion (problem of pacing ?), I think the story could have been more exploited and expanded, but maybe im not one for one shots in fantasy lol.

The POV was only from the main character Elizabeth, but I found her a little bland (not annoying or anything). I felt like her motivations were not very clear at the beginning for example, and the romance is very basic ahah (I love reading the romantic storyline normally but oh well better luck next time).
Nathaniel was refreshing when he appeared on the page, I loved his humor and his relationship with Silas. Silas was so interesting to read about and he also added an unexpected but welcome touch of humor.

The book was okay when I was reading it, but I didn’t have the need or will to read it, I didn’t think about it you know... (maybe it is my slump, maybe it is the book...)
I don’t want to say too much on the plot since its a one shot obviously, so in conclusion : A “basic fantasy but well made^^.
