When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

<![CDATA[The Greatest Nobodies of History: Minor Characters from Major Moments]]> 215968184 History belongs to the heroes. But to get the full story, sometimes you have to ask the side characters.

The lives of Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII and Queen Victoria fill bookshelves and fascinate scholars all over the world. But little attention is given to the ferret who posed for the renaissance master, the servant who oversaw the Tudor’s toilet time, or the famous horse who thrilled the miserable old monarch.

These supporting cast members have been waiting in the wings for too long, and Adrian Bliss thinks it’s high time they join their glory-hogging contemporaries in the spotlight. Fortunately, - thanks to some recently discovered ancient complaint letters, court transcripts and memoirs in bottles - now they can.

Equal parts fascinating and hilarious, the Greatest Nobodies of History is a surreal love letter to life’s forgotten heroes featuring hitherto undocumented accounts from Ancient Greece to the frontlines of the Great Emu War.

All that follows really happened, and some of it could even be true...]]>

He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.

The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.]]>

I've read a fair share of books and yet, I have difficulties recalling a novel with more cringe moments. The first word that comes to my mind if someone asks me about this book is not unoriginal (which it is), boring (very much so), or over-descriptive (and yet managing to be non-descriptive at the same time). It is simply cringe. I won't be able to hear the word' darling' for a while without shifting my facial expressions.

I considered dropping this book around 60% because it felt repetitive and the plot wasn't progressing. I did not like the main characters, nor did I appreciate the stupid love triangle. I still managed to finish it and although my feelings shifted from hate to dislike, I still do not think it was worth finishing.

<![CDATA[Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know]]> 43848929 Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outliers, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers -- and why they often go wrong.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you'll hear the voices of people he interviewed--scientists, criminologists, military psychologists. Court transcripts are brought to life with re-enactments. You actually hear the contentious arrest of Sandra Bland by the side of the road in Texas. As Gladwell revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, and the suicide of Sylvia Plath, you hear directly from many of the players in these real-life tragedies. There's even a theme song - Janelle Monae's "Hell You Talmbout."

Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.]]>

By Any Other Name 203164368 From the New York Times bestselling co-author of Mad Honey comes an “inspiring (Elle) novel about two women, centuries apart—one of whom is the real author of Shakespeare’s plays—who are both forced to hide behind another name.

Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

In 1581, young Emilia Bassano is a ward of English aristocrats. Her lessons on languages, history, and writing have endowed her with a sharp wit and a gift for storytelling, but like most women of her day, she is allowed no voice of her own. Forced to become a mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, who oversees all theatre productions in England, Emilia sees firsthand how the words of playwrights can move an audience. She begins to form a plan to secretly bring a play of her own to the stage—by paying an actor named William Shakespeare to front her work.

Told in intertwining timelines, By Any Other Name, a sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and desire centers two women who are determined to create something beautiful despite the prejudices they face. Should a writer do whatever it takes to see her story live on . . . no matter the cost? This remarkable novel, rooted in primary historical sources, ensures the name Emilia Bassano will no longer be forgotten.]]>

If Rune hopes to survive, she must ally herself with the cruel and dangerous Cressida Roseblood, who’s planning to take back the Republic and reinstate a Reign of Witches—something Cressida needs Rune to accomplish.

A WITCH HUNTER...
Apparently it wasn’t enough for Rune to deceive Gideon; she’s now betrayed him by allying herself with the witch who made his life a living hell. Gideon won’t allow the Republic to fall to the witches and be plunged back into the nightmares of the past. In order to protect this new world he fought for, every last witch must die—especially Rune Winters.

AN IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE...
When Rune makes Gideon an offer he can’t refuse, the two must pair up to accomplish dangerous goals. The more they’re forced into each other’s company, the more Gideon realizes the feelings he had for Rune aren’t as dead and buried as he thought. Now he’s faced with a terrible choice: sacrifice the girl he loves to stop a monster taking back power, or let Rune live and watch the world he fought so hard for burn.

pros:
- book short and fast paced
- acceptable main characters
- I really liked the tension between Rune and Guideon
- entertaining
- ending that makes you want to read the second book

cons:
- love triangle involving two brothers (COME ON)
- Rune as the crimson moth was more tell than show since we didn't see her much in action
- There some plot holes, for example, how can someone just randomly enter another person's house? [spoilers removed]
- why not use magic for healing when the opportunity presented itself? [spoilers removed]
- love triangle resolved in the old fashioned way [spoilers removed]
- teen hormones leading the main characters to make hasty decisions
- Rune not thinking why there were dead bodies left by witches, since she wasn't the one doing it (I assume most of those), didn't she wonder if another witch was in the arena?
- witch hate turning into genocide and Rune seemed oblivious to the reason behind the uprising

All in all, the book was fun and I'll be starting the next book soon before I lose interest. The story isn't new but it's a quick entertaining read. However, there were a lot of incidents that did not make sense or needed better explanation.]]>

I have a sister whom I cherish deeply, but I struggled to connect with the Blue sisters. Bonnie was the only one I liked, while I found Lucky and Avery unbearable. It also felt unrealistic for the three of them to achieve such remarkable success despite their challenging backgrounds. Each sister had an exaggerated, flamboyant personality, with little common ground between them. It seemed like the author overcompensated in making each sister distinct. While I understand why many enjoyed the book, I wasn’t aware that three of the four sisters were addicts or that cheating played a role. Had I known, I would’ve avoided it entirely, especially since the brief redemption arc did little to change my perspective.

I listened to the audiobook and the narration wasn't flattering, it was weird, and I am not sure how to describe it. It was as though the narrator was reciting rather than reading, with awkward pauses that made it sound like there was a period after every couple of words.

<![CDATA[A Caribbean Heiress in Paris (Las Leonas, #1)]]> 59040894 Paris, 1889

The Exposition Universelle is underway, drawing merchants from every corner of the globe. Luz Alana Heith-Benzan set sail from Santo Domingo armed with three hundred casks of rum, her two best friends and one simple rule: under no circumstances is she to fall in love.

The City of Light is where Luz Alana will expand Caña Brava, the rum business her family built over three generations. It’s a mission that’s taken on new urgency after her father’s untimely death and the news that her trust fund won’t be released until she marries. But buyers and shippers alike are rude and dismissive; they can’t imagine doing business with a woman…never mind a woman of color.

From her first tempestuous meeting with James Evanston Sinclair, Earl of Darnick, Luz Alana is conflicted. Why is this man—this titled Scottish man—so determined to help her? And why, honestly, is he so infuriatingly charming?

All Evan Sinclair ever wanted was to find a purpose away from his father’s dirty money and dirtier politics. Ignoring his title, he’s built a whiskey brand that’s his biggest—and only—passion. That is, until he’s confronted with a Spanish-speaking force of nature who turns his life upside down.

Evan quickly suspects he’ll want Luz Alana with him forever. Every day with her makes the earl wish for more than her magnificent kisses or the marriage of convenience that might save them both. But Luz Alana sailed for Paris with her eyes on liquor, money and new beginnings. She wasn't prepared for love to findĚýher.

<![CDATA[Little Women (Little Women, #1)]]> 1934 This is an alternate cover edition of ISBN 9780451529305.

Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott’s most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War.

It is no secret that Alcott based Little Women on her own early life. While her father, the freethinking reformer and abolitionist Bronson Alcott, hobnobbed with such eminent male authors as Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Louisa supported herself and her sisters with "woman’s work, including sewing, doing laundry, and acting as a domestic servant. But she soon discovered she could make more money writing. Little Women brought her lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl’s book her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America.

Mab has just traded Harry’s skills to pay off one of her debts. It's a smash and grab job to recover the literal Holy Grail from the vaults of the greatest treasure hoard in the supernatural world—which belongs to the one and only Hades, Lord of the freaking Underworld and generally unpleasant character. Worse, Dresden suspects that there is another game afoot that no one is talking about. And he's dead certain that Nicodemus has no intention of allowing any of his crew to survive the experience. The Wedding People 198902277 Alternate cover edition of ISBN 9781250899576.

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.]]>

Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, which served the neighborhood's quirky collection of blacks and European immigrants, helped by her husband, Moshe, a Romanian-born theater owner who integrated the town's first dance hall. When the state came looking for a deaf black child, claiming that the boy needed to be institutionalized, Chicken Hill's residents—roused by Chona's kindess and the courage of a local black worker named Nate Timblin—banded together to keep the boy safe.

As the novel unfolds, it becomes clear how much the people of Chicken Hill have to struggle to survive at the margins of white Christian America and how damaging bigotry, hypocrisy, and deceit can be to a community. When the truth is revealed about the skeleton, the boy, and the part the town’s establishment played in both, McBride shows that it is love and community—heaven and earth—that ultimately sustain us.]]>

A Different Kind of Power 222531211 From the former prime minister of New Zealand, then the world’s youngest female head of government and just the second to give birth in office, comes a deeply personal memoir chronicling her extraordinary rise and offering inspiration to a new generation of leaders.

What if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first? Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer in small-town New Zealand, but as the 40th Prime Minister of her country, she commanded global respect for her empathetic leadership that put people first. This is the remarkable story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt made political history and changed our assumptions of what a global leader can be.

When Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister at age thirty-seven, the world took notice. But it was her compassionate yet powerful response to the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, resulting in swift and sweeping gun control laws, that demonstrated her remarkable leadership. She guided her country through unprecedented challenges—a volcanic eruption, a major biosecurity breach, and a global pandemic—while advancing visionary new policies to address climate change, reduce child poverty, and secure historic international trade deals. She did all this while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye.

Ardern exemplifies a new kind of leadership—proving that leaders can be caring, empathetic, and effective. She has become a global icon, and now she is ready to share her story, from the struggles to the surprises, including for the first time the full details of her decision to step down during her sixth year as Prime Minister.

Through her personal experiences and reflections, Jacinda is a model for anyone who has ever doubted themselves, or has aspired to lead with compassion, conviction, and courage. A Different Kind of Power is more than a political memoir; it’s an insight into how it feels to lead, ultimately asking: What if you, too, are capable of more than you ever imagined?]]>

James 173754979 A brilliant reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn—both harrowing and satirical—told from the enslaved Jim's point of view

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with nuanced humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first-century American literature.

I'm obviously an outlier here. The book was fine but I wasn't impressed like most readers were. First, I am not familiar with the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and although I've heard of the title, I did not know the story before starting this book. It seemed fine though, at least at first, since the genre was different and the novel didn't seem to focus much on Huck. While I wouldn't say this affected my experience much reading this book, I would definitely have preferred being familiar with the original story. I listened to the audiobook, and while it was well-narrated, it couldn't grab my attention in the first half. I wasn't a fan of the events/reveals that unfolded at the end, one reveal regarding Huck felt anti-climatic and unnecessary while another event involving Norman was disappointing. At least, the second half was better.

I can see why many loved this book and I appreciate the idea of it. However, it was mostly "okay". I'd say read good and negative reviews before deciding if you want to read this book but given the average rating, you'll probably going to like it.

It might be my favourite installement so far and with that ending, I have high hopes that the sequel will be better. This book was a mix of what we found in the first two, military plots and battles plus political intrigue. Some reviews complained that some scenes felt like fillers, and I have to agree. I didn’t find the pace consistent and some scenes bored me while I couldn’t put the book down reading others. There were also some things that didn’t make much sense to me. While demons are supposed to sense each other, in one scene, a demon wrongly guessed the identity of the persons knocking on the door (although one had a demon - being vague on purpose). I also don’t really understand how Maurisk was able to do all that with a democratic government (supposedly) in place. It happened too fast for it to be realistic especially since not much time had passed since the events of the last book. The political scene was already fragile and everyone was supposed to be watching.

Overall, I’m glad that I decided to continue with this series. I have this bad habit of starting series and never finishing them when I read negative reviews of the sequels. Many reviews promised the second book to be different and it was. I’m not much of a fan of detailed long battles/military fantasy. This series, while not a favourite, is solid so far.

That said, I wasn’t the biggest fan of some characters who had their perspectives featured in the third book, particularly Argent and Starkey. It took me a few days to push through the opening chapters because I knew their narratives were coming, and sure enough, they did. My dislike for these characters remained, but I could still appreciate their role in the story at the end though I wish they had less "screen time."

Once I got past the first 15%, I was completely hooked and finished the book in one sitting. At one point, I even threw my Kindle (toward the end of Part 4) because I couldn’t stand some of the directions the story was taking. However, I should have trusted the process. I was deeply invested in the characters and found myself constantly worried about their fates.

The ending was ultimately satisfying and fitting. One of my concerns when reading dystopian novels is the risk of a lackluster finale, but thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. In fact, I thought it was better than the conclusion of the Arc of a Scythe trilogy. The story tied up its threads well and some of the reveals while unexpected, made sense. It’s rare for a series finale to strike such a perfect balance between closure and emotional impact, but Undivided managed to do just that.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and even teared up during a couple of scenes. I highly recommend this series to fans of dystopian fiction, I'm glad to say it hasn't aged badly.]]>

You need to know what you're getting into before starting this book else you won't enjoy it. It's a series of "fun facts" I'd say told in an anecdote format no longer than two pages each. I honestly don't know how trust worthy the sources are since I didn't check. Some stories were more interesting than others too.

I listened to the audiobook which was a plus since Mahnke narrates himself and he makes a good storyteller. However, some writing tropes grew repetitive, especially when it came to the final reveal. Some were unnecessary too and if anything, they would've grabbed my attention more if I knew who am I listening about. The cons is that sometimes my mind wandered and I couldn't stay focused all the time on the audiobook since the story isn't continuous and might have missed some chapters. I don't think all of the stories should've made it to the "cabinet". Others left my memory as soon as the chapter ended. At the same time, I do realise that many stories were about Americans and some stories about people I've never heard of, so of course, it would resonate differently which person depending on their age/national history.

I'm rating it 4 stars because I don't usually listen to podcasts but I do love learning random facts so this book worked quite well for me. Hence, read a bit about this one before starting it because it's not a book that can be read just any time if you usually read fiction, like I do.]]>

<![CDATA[Spy the Lie: Former CIA Officers Teach You How to Detect Deception]]> 13167156
Imagine how different your life would be if you could tell whether someone was lying or telling you the truth. Be it hiring a new employee, investing in a financial interest, speaking with your child about drugs, confronting your significant other about suspected infidelity, or even dating someone new, having the ability to unmask a lie can have far-reaching and even life-altering consequences.

As former CIA officers, Philip Houston, Michael Floyd, and Susan Carnicero are among the world’s best at recognizing deceptive behavior. Spy the Lie chronicles the captivating story of how they used a methodology Houston developed to detect deception in the counterterrorism and criminal investigation realms, and shows how these techniques can be applied in our daily lives.
Through fascinating anecdotes from their intelligence careers, the authors teach listeners how to recognize deceptive behaviors, both verbal and nonverbal, that we all tend to display when we respond to questions untruthfully. For the first time, they share with the general public their methodology and their secrets to the art of asking questions that elicit the truth.

Spy the Lie is a game-changer. You may never experience another book that has a more dramatic impact on your career, your relationships, or your future.

Bride 205953549
Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast-again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold an historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange. Again.

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It's clear from the way he tracks Misery's every movement that he doesn't trust her. If only he knew how right he was...

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what's hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory... alone with the wolf.]]>

The Covenant of Water 180357146 From the New York Times-bestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala's Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants.

A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humor, deep emotion, and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.]]>

As for the book itself, it took me three days to finish. I had it sped up. The first two parts dragged for me; they felt slow and, honestly, a bit boring. That said, I understand the need to set the scene and establish the characters backgrounds. However, I believe the story didn’t need over 700 pages to convey its central themes. The author often went off on tangents about characters or topics that I didn’t find interesting or relevant. While some details were engaging, others lost my attention.

The author did a fantastic job transporting me to India, immersing me in a small town and its evolution over the years. It was fascinating to see how the town, its people, and their lives changed with time, set against the backdrop of Indian history and culture.

My favorite characters were Big Ammachi and Mariamma. Big Ammachi, the matriarch of the family, stood out for her resilience and wisdom. She bore the weight of tradition and familial duty, and her character reflected the strength and endurance required to navigate life’s challenges. Mariamma, on the other hand, felt like a breath of fresh air. Her journey of self-discovery, shaped by love, tragedy, and the expectations placed on her, was moving and relatable. Both characters added depth and heart to the story, grounding it in human emotion despite the sprawling narrative.

The story improved around the 4050% mark, but that’s a significant drawback because, by then, I had already listened to what would amount to 300 pages of a standard novel. I can see why many readers might abandon this book early on—it demands a lot of patience. Even later in the story, I occasionally found my mind wandering, largely because of the excessive detail.

In the end, I’m glad I chose the audiobook instead of reading the physical book, as I likely wouldn’t have finished it otherwise. My takeaway is this: while the story is good and has merit, it would have benefited from being more concise. Sometimes less is more, and not every story needs hundreds of pages to be impactful.

If you have the time and think this book might interest you, give it a try—but know that it requires commitment. Personally, I need a strong reason to tackle a 700-page HF book, and in this case, while I appreciated the immersive experience and the story’s overarching themes, the sheer volume of unnecessary detail detracted from my enjoyment.]]>

The Covenant of Water is a book I’ve been aware of for a while, but I never picked it up because of its size. I often read books over 500 pages but I was hesitant about this one since HF rarely require so many pages. After a recent minor surgery, I found myself unable to read much, so I decided to listen to the audiobook instead. I already had the book on hold on Libby, and when it became available, I gave it a shot. It’s narrated by the author, which felt fitting for the story. He did a good job conveying the characters emotions, but his portrayal of female voices was unconvincing and, at times, irritating—though this seems to be a common issue with male narrators imitating female voices.

I couldn’t care less about the boring characters, the slow plot, nor the “mystery. It’s more of a fiction than anything else. 288 S.I.U. 1190153173 Nicole 4 manga, 2020 Well, it was a bad decision. I couldn’t stop reading.

One would think with the anime airing now, I’d be more reasonable and watch the anime instead. Well, I just finished watching two episodes... after reading 3 volumes of the manga... crazy, right?

I noticed however that they aren’t exactly the same. Lathel is called “Rachel, I have no idea why. Is it a translation mistake? But why would a world full of strange names have a familiar one? Anywho, I’m probably being too skeptical because I watched animated episodes of volumes I just read and of course, I would notice the difference whereas if I watched the anime after a while I wouldn’t have had.

I can understand why it became so popular and I believe it deserves the hype!]]>

"Bel Canto is its own universe. A marvel of a book."Ěý—Washington Post Book World

New York Times bestselling author Ann Patchett’s spellbindingĚýnovel about love and opera, and the unifying ways people learn to communicate across cultural barriers in times of crisis

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of the powerful businessman Mr. Hosokawa. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening—until a band of gun-wielding terrorists takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, a moment of great beauty, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different continents become compatriots, intimate friends, and lovers.

I didn't have lots of expectations when I started this book and it might have been more enjoyable if it wasn't maybe for the narration style. I didn't connect to the characters and the story overall isn't bad but the execution didn't work for me. I listened to the audiobook and I found myself often distracted when the audio was on. It's not the narrator's fault but rather the way the story was told didn't help me connect to the story.

But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood no one should have to endure a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and ultimately destroyed by a brutal act of violence.

Though wary of the case, it becomes apparent she doesn't have much choice if she wants to keep her job. They're scheduled to go to trial in one week. When she meets the accused face-to-face, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s specifically asked for her to represent him. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he may know what happened over twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades avoiding her past.

Suddenly she has a lot more to lose than this case. The only person who can help is her younger, estranged sister Callie—the last person Leigh would ever want to drag into this after all they’ve been through. But with the life-shattering truth in danger of being revealed, she has no choice...]]>

I enjoyed this book but it tackled some serious topics woven in a thriller plot. It features almost every trigger warning you can think of. I’m not sure if I’ll be reviewing this one but for the time being, I’ll just say that it was a bit long (the audio was 19 hours but at least well narrated). The ending wasn’t surprising but I didn’t mind that. Also, I have distanced myself enough from covid days that now I don’t mind having covid infiltrating my novels but it was overdone here.

Kyland 23637440 A full-length, standalone romance from the New York Times bestselling author of Archer's Voice.

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

THIS IS A STANDALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.]]>

This might be the book with the least going action wise but featured a lot of political intrigue in the Attolian court. I loved reading from Costis perspective, which worked pretty well for the book. I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy this book so much especially since I appreciated the last two instalments but didn’t love them. Turner’s writing style, characterisation, chain of events, all worked perfectly in this novel.

This was honestly a delight to read, Gen has so much depth to his character, his chemistry with Irene was palpable and I was like everyone in court, dying for the gossip and to learn more about their relationship.

This novel also sets up the scene for the upcoming novels, war might be on the horizon and I’m curious the politics within Attolia & Eddis will play out. ]]>

I listened to the audiobook, and while the narration was generally good, I couldn’t stand Avery’s perspective; the narrator’s voice change made me dislike her even more. One thing I didn’t appreciate was the multiple perspectives—it sometimes got confusing to keep track of who was narrating. It wasn’t hard to figure out, but it was a bit distracting, especially early on when I assumed the rotating perspectives would stop (spoiler: they didn’t).]]>

Arabella 311150
On her way to London Arabella's carriage breaks down outside the hunting lodge of the wealthy and socially prominent Robert Beaumaris, fate cast her in his path. Arabella's only fault is impetuosity, and her pride stung when she overhears a remark of her path of arrogant host, who accused her of being another petty female after his wealth, the proud, headstrong ingenue made a most startling claim -- she was an heiress! A pretense that deeply amuses the jaded Beau. To counter her white lie, Beaumaris launches her into high society and thereby subjects her to all kinds of amorous fortune hunters in London and other embarrassments.

Suddenly Arabella found herself the talk of the ton and pursued by some of the most eligible young men of the day. But only one caught Arabella's fancy: Beaumaris, the handsome and dedicated bachelor. She should know better than to allow herself to be provoked by nonpareil Beau. But would her deceitful charade destroy her one chance for true love...?

Beaumaris, however, although a most artful matrimonial dodger, badly underestimated his seemingly naive adversary... When compassionate Arabella rescues such unfortunate creatures as a mistreated chimney sweep and a mixed-breed mongrel, she foists them upon Beaumaris, who finds he rather enjoys the role of rescuer and is soon given the opportunity to prove his worth in the person of Bertram Tallant, the also impetuous young brother of Arabella....]]>

<![CDATA[The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1)]]> 150247395
Called in to investigate this mystery is Ana Dolabra, an investigator whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities.

At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol. Din is an engraver, magically altered to possess a perfect memory. His job is to observe and report, and act as his superior’s eyes and ears--quite literally, in this case, as among Ana’s quirks are her insistence on wearing a blindfold at all times, and her refusal to step outside the walls of her home.

Din is most perplexed by Ana’s ravenous appetite for information and her mind’s frenzied leaps—not to mention her cheerful disregard for propriety and the apparent joy she takes in scandalizing her young counterpart. Yet as the case unfolds and Ana makes one startling deduction after the next, he finds it hard to deny that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective.

As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.

Featuring an unforgettable Holmes-and-Watson style pairing, a gloriously labyrinthine plot, and a haunting and wholly original fantasy world, The Tainted Cup brilliantly reinvents the classic mystery tale.]]>

Lore 53375824 From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family's sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt's promises of eternal glory. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man--now a god--responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore's decision to bind her fate to Athena's and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost--and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.]]>

It was one of those novels that became instantly popular, only to fade from everyone’s radar a few months later. At first, the book was a lot of fun. But somewhere along the way, despite the fast pace, I started to get bored. I'm not entirely sure why; maybe things got a bit repetitive, or as several reviewers mentioned, readers needed some room to breathe.

That alone didn’t bring my rating down to three stars, though. What did was the ending—it felt abrupt and underwhelming. After all the build-up, I was expecting more, but we didn’t even get an epilogue. The romance also fell short for me, especially as the story progressed; it just didn’t stand out. Lore and the cast of characters were likable, though.

Overall, I enjoyed Lore and finished it quickly; it was better than I expected. However, the repetitive feel and the lack of engagement in the second half kept me from fully enjoying it. This seems like a miss since the story itself was good.]]>

Outlander and I have history. I first picked it up on my bus rides home back in 2016, but as summer arrived, I put it on hold after reading around 130 pages (or so Ĺ·±¦ÓéŔÖ tells me). Years passed, and I tried several times to continue the novel but always failed simply because what I was reading couldn't hold my interest. Then in 2023, I watched a few episodes of the series, hoping it would motivate me to finish the book—especially since I actually liked the adaptation. But I gave up again after just ten days.

Fast forward to October 2024. With more time to read than I’ve had in years and on a binge of big books, I focused on my physical copies, as ebooks had become my comfort zone and my paperbacks were being neglected. After finishing several novels that I’d been anxious about, I decided two weeks ago to tackle Outlander once again. This time, I felt confident that I could finish it. I soldiered on and it was worth it.

I can understand why some people give up on this book. The first 200 pages were incredibly slow, and I struggled to care about the characters. Still, the promise of the story intrigued me. Honestly, I mostly wanted to be part of the fandom, as so many people love this series. I'm really glad I pushed through.

The writing was excellent, and you could tell how much research went into the book (written in 1991!). Once the story truly started moving, I was hooked and felt transported back to 1743 with Claire. I probably couldn't survive that era, but Gabaldon crafted Claire's background just right, making her fit into that period believably.

There are hundreds of positive reviews out there, so I won’t go into why this book is so widely loved. All I’ll say is, if you’re finding it dull, please try to stick with it until around page 250. If it hasn’t grabbed your interest by then, it may not be for you. Jamie—except for one infamous scene (if you've read the book, you’ll know the one)—owned my heart. I really liked him, and he was definitely a highlight of the novel.

Now onto the parts I didn’t enjoy, which ultimately led me to decide not to continue the book series and instead watch the TV adaptation (which I found well-executed from the few episodes I’ve seen).

My first issue was with Claire herself. Although her character was well-written, I didn’t feel her presence as much as I’d expect from a protagonist. Even though I was reading from her perspective, there’s surprisingly little I can say about her character. She felt more like a narrator than an active main lead. While she did act in certain scenes, she mostly felt emotionless, except the moments involving Jamie. Claire is far from a favorite character, and with such long books, I'm not inclined to invest my time in reading from her perspective. Having the book told from the first perspective was a good decision since it made it easier to empathise with her.

My second issue was the pacing. This book is long, and it could’ve been shorter. Some details were excessive, the pauses between events dragged, and it took far too many chapters for the story to pick up.

Finally, there were certain dialogues that made me uncomfortable. For instance, Jamie tells Claire he once saw a man raping a woman. Claire doesn’t follow up on this, but I couldn't help but wonder—what did you do, Jamie? Who was this man? Did you stop him? Did you help the woman? This line could’ve been omitted if the author wasn’t planning to address it.

These three points kept me from fully enjoying the book. Nevertheless, I'm rating it four stars because I genuinely liked the story, the setting, and some of the characters. If the TV show didn’t exist, I might have continued with the series, but at over 900 pages and with eight more installments, I’m not invested enough in this first book to commit. However, I’m definitely looking forward to continuing with the show.

I haven’t been writing proper reviews lately, but it felt right to go beyond a few lines for Outlander and even more fitting to wrap up my 2024 reading challenge with it.]]>

You know how sometimes reading and finishing a specific book feels like an achievement? When you're relieved to have finally completed a book that's been eyeing you from the shelf for the better part of a decade, silently judging you each time you bypass it for something new. It's sat there, patiently waiting while you feel a growing guilt for neglecting it like an overdue chore but not enough to pick it up.

Within hours of arriving in their seedy casino hotel, it becomes clear their rescue mission is going to be a bust. Javi’s kidnapper, Marco, refuses to negotiate, demanding payment in full in exchange for Javi’s life. But that’s not all―he insists on knowing the whereabouts of his missing nephew, Ike, who mysteriously disappeared. Unable to confess what really happened to Ike, Finlay and Vero are forced to come up with a new plan: sleuth out the location of Javi and the Aston Martin, then steal them both back.

But when they sneak into the loan shark’s suite to search for clues, they find more than they bargained for―Marco's already dead. They don’t have a clue who murdered him, only that they themselves have a very convincing motive. Then four members of the police department unexpectedly show up in town, also looking for Ike―and after Finlay's night with hot cop Nick at the police academy, he’s a little too eager to keep her close to his side.

If Finlay can juggle a jealous ex-husband, two precocious kids, her mother’s marital issues, a decomposing loan shark, and find Vero’s missing boyfriend, she might get out of Atlantic City in one piece. But will she fold under the pressure and come clean about the things she’s done, or be forced to double down?]]>

I didn't expect much going in, since I’ve grown tired of thrillers with the same predictable plotlines and OTT endings. I chose the audiobook mainly because of the novel’s popularity, though the premise was intriguing. For this story, the less you know beforehand, the better—it adds to the suspense.

The protagonist, Evie, is sharp and quick on her feet, which I appreciated. While it’s part of her job, it was refreshing to see her staying alert and paying attention to every small detail.

The plot was highly addictive, and some of the late reveals were very satisfying, especially since certain things raised question marks as I read along were resolved.

Now, I know I mentioned absurd thriller plots, and yes, this one could easily fall into that category, but hear me out. If this were a movie, it wouldn’t feel that way. I wasn't rolling my eyes on some scenes. I wasn't bored thinking "not thing again". I was instead focusing on unravelling all the secrets. I'd love to see it adapted into a film (not a series), as it would make a really entertaining watch.

Overall, I’d recommend this book if you’re looking for a fast-paced, fun thriller that stands out from other recent releases in the genre. Plus, the audiobook narration was excellent.]]>

The Answer Is No 219876684 In a hilarious short story from New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman, the absurdities of modern life cause one man’s solitary world to spin suddenly, and comically, out of control.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone?

Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Told in Fredrik Backman’s singular witty style with sharply drawn characters and relatable antics, The Answer Is No is a laugh-out-loud portrait of a man struggling to keep to himself in a world that won’t leave him alone.]]>

<![CDATA[Unlikeable Female Characters: The Women Pop Culture Wants You to Hate]]> 74874110 Publishers Weekly

How bitches, trainwrecks, shrews, and crazy women have taken over pop culture and liberated women from having to be nice.

Female characters throughout history have been burdened by the moral trap that is likeability. Any woman who dares to reveal her messy side has been treated as a cautionary tale. Today, unlikeable female characters are everywhere in film, TV, and wider pop culture. For the first time ever, they are being accepted by audiences and even showered with industry awards. We are finally accepting that women are—gasp—fully fledged human beings. How did we get to this point?

Unlikeable Female Characters traces the evolution of highly memorable female characters, examining what exactly makes them popular, how audiences have reacted to them, and the ways in which pop culture is finally allowing us to celebrate the complexities of being a woman. Anna Bogutskaya, film programmer, broadcaster, and co-founder of the horror film collective and podcast The Final Girls, takes us on a journey through popular film, TV, and music, looking at the nuances of womanhood on and off-screen to reveal whether pop culture—and society—is finally ready to embrace complicated women.

Praise for Unlikeable Female Characters:

"Fascinating, insightful, and kick-ass." —Emma Jane Unsworth, internationally bestselling author of Grown Ups and Animals

"Beautifully written." —Chelsea G. Summers, author of A Certain Hunger

"Part-cultural exposé, part-Taylor Swift album." —Clarisse Loughrey, Chief Film Critic at The Independent

"Brilliant masterpiece breaking down the tired tropes of TV and beyond." —Aparna Shewakramani, author of She's Unlikeable and star of Indian Matchmaking]]>

448 Holly Jackson 0593374207 Nicole 2 The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a book I've often seen in last months and I was excited when it was finally my turn to listen to the audiobook on Libby. The 17 hours duration didn't deter me (but I did speed up the audiobook).

I don’t get the hype surrounding this novel

I had two main issues with this book:

- The main character was unkind, not in a "badass" way but more in a genuinely unpleasant way. She constantly pushes others away, and her rude treatment of older people and friends around her was hard to tolerate. I found it difficult to empathize with her, and she ultimately came across as a bully. I understand she didn’t have the best upbringing, but that doesn’t excuse her behavior.

- The ending. It would have been much better if the story had just stopped at a certain point rather than adding more over-the-top twists. One of the best parts of mystery books is that they could actually happen to someone, somewhere. That sense of possibility was there until the last two chapters, where it all became far too unbelievable.

The narrator's voice of male characters was weird. She isn't my favorite narrator by far and I'm not sure if she made Bel sound better or worse than she does in the book if I was reading it.]]>

What Does It Feel Like? 214312329
“What Does It Feel Like? is fiction, but it is my most autobiographical work to date. Eve’s story is my story.”—Sophie Kinsella

Eve is a successful novelist who wakes up one day in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there. Her husband, never far from her side, explains that she has had an operation to remove the large, malignant tumor growing in her brain.

As Eve learns to walk, talk, and write again—and as she wrestles with her diagnosis, and how and when to explain it to her beloved children—she begins to recall what’s most important to her: long walks with her husband’s hand clasped firmly around her own, family game nights, and always buying that dress when she sees it.

Recounted in brief anecdotes, each one is an attempt to answer the type of impossible questions recognizable to anyone navigating the labyrinth of grief. This short, extraordinary novel is a celebration of life, shot through with warmth and humor—it will both break your heart and put it back together again.

“Why did I write such a personal book? I have always processed my life through writing. Hiding behind my fictional characters, I have always turned my own life into a narrative. It is my version of therapy, maybe. Writing is my happy place, and writing this book, although tough going at times, was immensely satisfying and therapeutic for me.”—Sophie Kinsella]]>

I came across it on Libby and since it's Kinsella, I put it on hold without thinking much of it having wondered before why isn't she publishing many books like she used to. Then I started reading the blurb and what this novella is about and I was honestly surprised.

I admire Kinsella for sharing such a personal private story especially given what she went through and even more for surviving all of that. I'd definitely recommend it to all of her fans.

UnSouled (Unwind, #3) 19432805 The story that began with Unwind continues.

Connor and Lev are on the run after the destruction of the Graveyard, the last safe haven for AWOL Unwinds. But for the first time, they’re not just running away from something. This time, they’re running toward answers, in the form of a woman Proactive Citizenry has tried to erase from history itself. If they can find her, and learn why the shadowy figures behind unwinding are so afraid of her, they may discover the key to bringing down unwinding forever.

Cam, the rewound boy, is plotting to take down the organization that created him. Because he knows that if he can bring Proactive Citizenry to its knees, it will show Risa how he truly feels about her. And without Risa, Cam is having trouble remembering what it feels like to be human.

With the Juvenile Authority and vindictive parts pirates hunting them, the paths of Connor, Lev, Cam, and Risa will converge explosively—and everyone will be changed.

Neal Shusterman continues the adventure that VOYA called “poignant, compelling, and ultimately terrifying.”]]>
405 Neal Shusterman Nicole 3 2024, dystopia, ya
I believe Shusterman isn't the best at writing "villains" because in this book, I really disliked reading Argent and the pirate (forgot his name)'s perspectives. They felt like cockroaches that I had to read about and I just skimmed through them. Luckily, we didn't have them in the second half of the book. I am also not a fan whatsoever of Starkey but at least, most of the events surrounding him later on took place form other perspectives. There are some villains you just love to hate or are interesting. For me, the ones I previously mentioned were more annoying than anything else.

This is probably my main issue with this series, especially since it has multiple perspectives whereas I usually prefer a limited number of PoVs especially when certain parts can be covered through one of the main characters' narratives. I still rated it 3 starts because I like Connor, Risa, Cam, and now Grace too much to rate it any less.]]>

This is my least favourite book in this series so far. I honestly expected better but it felt like there was little action going on.

I still rated it 3 starts because I like Connor, Risa, Cam, and now Grace too much to rate it any less.

ShĹŤgun (Asian Saga, #1) 402093
Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, ShĹŤgun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but also one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, ShĹŤgun is, as the New York Times put it, "...not only something you read--you live it." Provocative, absorbing, and endlessly fascinating, there is only one: ShĹŤgun.]]>

The Thirteenth Tale 40440
The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish life histories for herself -- all of them inventions that have brought her fame and fortune but have kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary life. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth, hidden by those who loved her most, remains an ever-present pain. Struck by a curious parallel between Miss Winter's story and her own, Margaret takes on the commission.

As Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire.

Margaret succumbs to the power of Vida's storytelling but remains suspicious of the author's sincerity. She demands the truth from Vida, and together they confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves.

The Thirteenth Tale is a love letter to reading, a book for the feral reader in all of us, a return to that rich vein of storytelling that our parents loved and that we loved as children. Diane Setterfield will keep you guessing, make you wonder, move you to tears and laughter and, in the end, deposit you breathless yet satisfied back upon the shore of your everyday life.]]>

Listen for the Lie 127279000 What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?

Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all and, if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. But after Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer.

It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life. But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast Listen for the Lie and its too-good looking host, Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one who did it.

The truth is out there, if we just listen.]]>

I might have rated this book higher if it wasn't for all that absurd amount of cheating and domestic violence. While I'm fully aware it might happen in real life, to see it happening that much in a single town is kinda absurd especially when you add a murder to the mix.

Other than that, the book became very addicting towards the end. I highly recommend the audiobook format because the podcasts were narrated by a different person.

The Frozen River 112975658 A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history.

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.

Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.

Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.]]>

In 2021, I read Before They Are Hanged and said that I won't wait a year to read the next book, thinking I would be reading it much earlier. 3 years later, here I am.

There are some things in life you avoid not because you know they will turn out to be an unpleasant experience, but simply the act of starting is just difficult. The second book in this trilogy was a slow paced book and while I still like it, I assumed this book would be the same. And then, months pass by and other priorities come up.

Finally, I decided to make myself read the Last Argument of Kings, it was about time. I honestly regret not reading it earlier because it turned out to be my favorite installment in this trilogy. I finished most of it in two days. Once I got passed page 50, it was difficult to stop reading. Everything has built up to this book and this slow pace was no longer there. Many things were happening at the same time. Several plot twists surprised me. [spoilers removed]. The characterisation was as usual top notch, the pace much better than the previous books, and the characters were explored on a deeper level.

I won't be writing a proper review but I'll say this. If you felt indifferent or got bored reading Before They Are Hanged, don't let that deter you from reading this novel. It's the best in this trilogy, in my opinion, and leaves much to be explored in the world created by Abercrombie.]]>

Honestly, this book was much better than I expected. I haven’t been enjoying WWII stories lately and I only learned that it involves a WWII part after starting it. The chapters were also very long. Surprisingly, the order which Picoult used to tell, worked for me. The audibook was also well narrated with different narrators for each perspective. My only critique would be about the romance for it felt rushed and unnatural to me.

I'm honestly not going to review this book but will share a few thoughts about.

- I can see why it's compared to Red Rising—there are some similarities, but it's also very different.
- It's not a perfect book, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless.
- I loved The Shadow of What Was Lost more in terms of plot and characters, but this one is still worth reading.
- Even though it’s over 600 pages, I finished it in two days (and on a workday, luckily, I was working remotely and didn’t have many tasks), so it's definitely addicting. Don’t let the page count scare you off.
- Yes, it has some young adult vibes, but I’d classify it more as high fantasy with an adolescent lead and mature content.
- The Roman names were confusing, but don’t skip the glossary at the end—it’s helpful for keeping track of everything.
- What I appreciated about the story is that Vis possesses a wealth of knowledge and fights well for a reason. Often, we get main leads who are inexplicably super skilled without proper training or education—how does that even make sense?
- If you're a fantasy fan, you should give this book a try. I won't say it’ll become an instant favorite, but it's very enjoyable and engaging (plus, hey, academia). Just know that you'll have to wait a bit to reach the school part, but it doesn't get boring along the way.]]>

649 John Gwynne 0316399744 Nicole 3 2024, fantasy Malice in 2021. I read The Shadow of the Gods but wasn’t impressed; however, its sequel, The Hunger of the Gods was better on every level. I assumed the same would apply here: if I wasn’t a fan of Malice, maybe Valor would be an improvement, just like with his other series. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

And I have no excuse for not liking this book. I was on a high-fantasy reading roll, eager for more of the genre. I wasn’t feeling burnt out, I had the time, and I was in the right mindset, so no—it’s not me.

Sometimes, I try to come up with reasons for why a book didn’t click with me, but honestly, I can’t understand why everyone is so in love with this series from the start. There. I said it. It’s not bad, just overhyped so far.

Minor spoilers ahead, scroll down for the spoiler free part

Let’s start with the characters. Corban? Is this really the main lead I’m supposed to root for? He was so underwhelming—bland and one-dimensional. I couldn’t bring myself to care about him. Sure, he’s well-raised and good with a sword, but I wasn’t impressed (and I even liked Rand from book one, despite his constant complaining). Things kept happening to Corban, and he never really took charge—though I’m sure he will later. I wanted to see more growth in his character in this instalment. I’m usually pretty easy to win over with young protagonists destined to save the world, characters I want to protect from every bad thing. But Ban never made me feel that way.

Then there’s the forced romance with Coralen. As one of the only three female characters with her own POV in this book, she didn’t impress me at all. I understood what Gwynne was trying to do with her character, but it felt forced. She tried too hard to come off as a badass.

Edna was unimpressive, and aside from a couple of scenes, she wasn’t fully stepping up to her status as queen. I would have preferred to see her take more decisive leadership actions. I understand she had just survived a traumatic experience, but she should have shown more strength, at least for the sake of her company.

That said, I did grow fond of some characters and looked forward to their chapters. Maquin was my favorite—I wanted him to find peace, but Gwynne didn’t give him a break. Cywen, who I liked from the first book, also stood out (and yes, I totally ship her with Veradis; that pairing would work much better). Fidele's chapters, although brief, also interested me for we could see her trying to do what was right. I'm curious how her subplot will develop in Ruin.

end of the minor spoilers

As for the writing, the battle scenes were well done. Yet despite the constant action, I found myself getting bored around the middle of the book, as it felt like the main characters weren’t making any real progress. My main issue was with the middle section, where I simply lost interest (except for Maquin, Cywen, and Tukul’s chapters). Some chapters felt unnecessary, and the information could’ve been conveyed through another character’s perspective. While it was a relief at times that certain characters' perspectives were brief, the short chapters also detracted from character development for most. Nonetheless, I can see why this series would make for good TV with all its action-packed content.

As I mentioned, this book was packed with action, but it didn’t become truly interesting until the last 200 pages. Then, except for the few perspectives I didn't care about, the book became actually good and I finished that part rather quickly compared to the rest of the book.

In sum, I was disappointed by Valor but the last 25% redeemed the book but not enough to rate it 4 stars. I will persevere and read Ruin since this book has set up a lot of events, and [spoilers removed]. What I won’t do, however, is wait too long to read it, as my interest will likely fade by then. If you liked Malice, you’ll probably enjoy this more. If you didn’t, don’t bother with this installment. But if you’re on the fence, give it a shot—just keep your expectations in check.

<![CDATA[Slouch Witch (The Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic, #1)]]> 34670747
Actually, she is the very last witch in the world to be called if you need magical support. If it were up to Ivy herself, she would like to hang out on the couch all day, watch series, munch junk food and have arguments with her cat. But due to a bureaucratic mistake, Ivy becomes a victim of a reversed identity and involuntarily - very, very involuntarily! - hurled right into the Arcane Branch, the investigative agency of the Holy Order of Magical Enlightenment.

Ivy's problems quickly quadruple when a valuable object was stolen and she was forced to work with Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. Raphael's sapphire-blue eyes somehow make butterflies flutter in Ivy's stomach, but the adeptus actually shows everything that Ivy deeply rejects: the joyless pitfalls of too much stoic witchcraft. And the longer Raphael Ivy sucks, the greater your desire ... to turn him into a frog!]]>

Slouch Witch started interesting enough. What made picking up this book is that the main lead is unconventional, which was refreshing. Ivy is witty and intelligent. She does things the smart way instead of using common time consuming methods. Unfortunately, I got tired quickly of this attitude because she was just that. Lazy smart witch. Her character wasn't explored enough for me.

On the other hand, the mystery plot was kind of boring, I wasn't invested in it from the start nor cared about catching the culprit. I found myself skimming through the book between the 60% and 80% mark, it's not that things weren't happening, it's more that it just couldn't care less. I honestly considered dropping the book because I was forcing myself to read it. I'm not sure if the last 15% were worth it but they were better than most of the book.

As for Winter, he was also bland. I didn't find him hot nor felt the chemistry between them except towards the last two chapters. I honestly didn't care much about him either.

All in all, I can see why many have enjoyed this book. Sadly, it wasn't my cup of tea. I would only recommend it if you're an avid UF reader, otherwise, I doubt you will enjoy it.]]>

Here One Moment 208516656 If you knew your future, would you try to fight fate?

Aside from a delay, there will be no problems. The flight will be smooth, it will land safely. Everyone who gets on the plane will get off. But almost all of them will be forever changed.

Because on this ordinary, short, domestic flight, something extraordinary happens. People learn how and when they are going to die. For some, their death is far in the future—age 103!—and they laugh. But for six passengers, their predicted deaths are not far away at all.

How do they know this? There were ostensibly more interesting people on the flight (the bride and groom, the jittery, possibly famous woman, the giant Hemsworth-esque guy who looks like an off-duty superhero, the frazzled, gorgeous flight attendant) but none would become as famous as “The Death Lady.

Not a single passenger or crew member will later recall noticing her board the plane. She wasn’t exceptionally old or young, rude or polite. She wasn’t drunk or nervous or pregnant. Her appearance and demeanor were unremarkable. But what she did on that flight was truly remarkable.

A few months later, one passenger dies exactly as she predicted. Then two more passengers die, again, as she said they would. Soon no one is thinking this is simply an entertaining story at a cocktail party.

If you were told you only had a certain amount of time left to live, would you do things differently? Would you try to dodge your destiny?

Liane Moriarty’s Here One Moment is a brilliantly constructed tale that looks at free will and destiny, grief and love, and the endless struggle to maintain certainty and control in an uncertain world. A modern-day Jane Austen who humorously skewers social mores while spinning a web of mystery, Moriarty asks profound questions in her newest I-can’t-wait-to-find-out-what-happens novel.]]>

The Hierarchy still call me Vis Telimus. Still hail me as Catenicus. They still, as one, believe they know who I am.

But with all that has happened—with what I fear is coming—I am not sure it matters anymore.

I am no longer one. I won the Iudicium, and lost everything—and now, impossibly, the ancient device beyond the Labyrinth has replicated me across three separate worlds. A different version of myself in each of Obiteum, Luceum, and Res. Three different bodies, three different lives. I have to hide; fight; play politics. I have to train; trust; lie. I have to kill; heal; prove myself again, and again, and again.

I am loved, and hated, and entirely alone.

Above all, though, I need to find answers before it’s too late. To understand the nature of what has happened to me, and why.

I need to find a way to stop the coming Cataclysm, because if all I have learned is true, I may be the only one who can.]]>

<![CDATA[Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive, #2)]]> 17332218 From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, Words of Radiance, Book Two of the Stormlight Archive, continues the immersive fantasy epic that The Way of Kings began.

Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.

The Assassin, Szeth, is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.

Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.

Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable.]]>

But to everyone’s surprise, Cam wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, Camden is a McTavish in name only, but a summons in the wake of his uncle’s death brings him and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but coming home reminds Cam why he was so quick to leave in the first place.

Jules, however, has other ideas, and the more she learns about Cam’s estranged family—and the twisted secrets they keep—the more determined she is for her husband to claim everything Ruby once intended for him to have.

But Ruby’s plans were always more complicated than they appeared. As Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind YA fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

Clytemnestra 61361681 For fans of Madeline Miller's Circe, a stunning debut following Clytemnestra, the most notorious villainess of the ancient world and the events that forged her into the legendary queen.

As for queens, they are either hated or forgotten. She already knows which option suits her best...

You were born to a king, but you marry a tyrant. You stand by helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore, and you comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own. Because this was not the first offence against you. This was not the life you ever deserved. And this will not be your undoing. Slowly, you plot.

But when your husband returns in triumph, you become a woman with a choice.

Acceptance or vengeance, infamy follows both. So, you bide your time and force the gods' hands in the game of retribution. For you understood something long ago that the others never did.

If power isn't given to you, you have to take it for yourself.

A blazing novel set in the world of Ancient Greece for fans of Jennifer Saint and Natalie Haynes, this is a thrilling tale of power and prophecies, of hatred, love, and of an unforgettable Queen who fiercely dealt out death to those who wronged her.]]>

The River We Remember 101160844 In 1958, a small Minnesota town is rocked by the murder of its most powerful citizen, pouring fresh fuel on old grievances in this dazzling standalone novel.

On Memorial Day, as the people of Jewel, Minnesota gather to remember and honor the sacrifice of so many sons in the wars of the past, the half-clothed body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. Investigation of the murder falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife. As suspicions and accusations mount and the town teeters on the edge of more violence, Dern struggles not only to find the truth of Quinn’s murder but also put to rest the demons from his own past.

Caught up in the torrent of anger that sweeps through Jewel are a war widow and her adolescent son, the intrepid publisher of the local newspaper, an aging deputy, and a crusading female lawyer, all of whom struggle with their own tragic histories and harbor secrets that Quinn’s death threatens to expose.

Both a complex, spellbinding mystery and a masterful portrait of midcentury American life, The River We Remember is an unflinching look at the wounds left by the wars we fight abroad and at home, a moving exploration of the ways in which we seek to heal, and a testament to the enduring power of the stories we tell about the places we call home.]]>

I listened to the audiobook which failed to grab my attention until I reached around 75% of the book. This is never good because I kept replaying some chapters since I often got distracted listening to the audio (although I was not doing anything but riding a bus).

I also felt that the story wouldn't progress. Too many unnecessary details about every single character we were introduced to and it was difficult for me to keep track amid useless information.

The last few chapters were the best part of the story. The book feels more like a historical drama than a thriller actually since it's heavily focused on the characters. The audio narration was decent but I think Krueger's writing style is simply not for me.]]>

The Women 127305853 From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.]]>

R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels (Library Journal). Now, Anthony Ryan begins a new saga, The Draconis Memoria...

Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Trading Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from captive or hunted Reds, Greens, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that bestow fearsome powers on the rare men and women known as the Blood-blessed.

But not many know the that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly. The Syndicate’s last hope resides in whispers of the existence of another breed of drake, far more powerful than the rest, and the few who have been chosen by fate to seek it.

Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered Blood-blessed who finds himself pressed into service by the Protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted lands in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an Ironship cruiser whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.

As lives and empires clash and intertwine, as the unknown and the known collide, all three must fight to turn the tide of a coming war, or drown in its wake.

But that was before a rebellion upended his life. And once the powder smoke settled, he was left in charge of a demoralized force clinging tenuously to a small fortress at the edge of the desert.

To flee from her past, Winter Ihernglass masqueraded as a man and enlisted as a ranker in the Vordanai Colonials, hoping only to avoid notice. But when chance sees her promoted to command, she must win the hearts of her men and lead them into battle against impossible odds.

The fates of both these soldiers and all the men they lead depend on the newly arrived Colonel Janus bet Vhalnich, who has been sent by the ailing king to restore order. His military genius seems to know no bounds, and under his command, Marcus and Winter can feel the tide turning. But their allegiance will be tested as they begin to suspect that the enigmatic Janus’s ambitions extend beyond the battlefield and into the realm of the supernatural—a realm with the power to ignite a meteoric rise, reshape the known world, and change the lives of everyone in its path.]]>

I haven’t read a military fantasy in a long time and now this book made me realise I no longer have the patience for it. I might have been okay with this subgenre once but now I need more action to keep me invested. However, the characters were well written. I also enjoyed some parts, particularly near the end. I might read the sequel if it follows a different system (I will have to check).

If you enjoy military fantasy, reading this book is a must. If you don’t, I’d skip it. Not to say the novel is bad (truly it’s not) but the structure makes it difficult to enjoy if you don’t appreciate a book full of military related details.]]>

Objectively, this is a solid fantasy book. Subjectively, I was bored a lot reading it.

I was struggling to finish this book. It was really boring except like for the last 15 pages.
Not much suspense. Almost everything was predictable. She changes for him and blah blah blah. Wich is kind of odd, usually guys are the one who changes. I liked Nikolai, the last two chapter and him are the only reasons for not sticking on 1 star. Once things started to get exciting, and I was looking forward to knowing what will happen, the book was finished. Am I excited to read the next book? NO. Would I read it? Yes, but certainly not soon. I hope the other books in Immortals after Dark are better. I'm mean there's no great plot going on right here.

It's a story - scarcely a story- about a vampire trying to persuade a Valkyrie to stay with him "willingly" .

The Guest List 52656911
The bride The plus one The best man The wedding planner The bridesmaid The body

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?]]>

Life, death, and rebirth - in Becar, who you are in this life will determine your next life. Yet there is hope - you can change your destiny with the choices you make. Unless you can win the Races.

After a celebrated career as an elite kehok rider, Tamra became a professional trainer. Then a tragic accident shattered her confidence, damaged her reputation, and left her nearly broke. Now, she needs the prize money to prevent the local temple from taking her daughter away from her, and that means she must once again find a winning kehok...and a rider willing to trust her.

Raia is desperate to get away from her domineering family and cruel fiancé. As a kehok rider, she could earn enough to buy her freedom. But she needs a first-rate trainer.

Impressed by the inexperienced young woman’s determination, Tamra hires Raia and pairs her with a strange new kehok with the potential to win - if he can be tamed.

But in this sport, if you forget you’re riding on the back of a monster, you die. Tamra and Raia will work harder than they ever thought possible to win the deadly Becaran Races - and in the process, discover what makes this particular kehok so special.]]>
