They inhabit New York City’s most legendary and coziest spots—the Algonquin Hotel, a whiskey distillery, Bleecker Street Records, and a host of yoga studios, bodegas, bookstores, and bike shops in between. True New Yorkers—masters of people watching—they perch on wine crates, piles of books, and a classic hotel countertop, taking in the activity around them. Depending on their mood, these cats will ignore enthusiastic admirers, offer a few delightful purrs, or occasionally even take a swipe. Some even find a mouse or two to chase.

Shop Cats of New York introduces forty of New York’s favorite felines—all who have an extraordinary story to tell. Popular cat blogger Tamar Arslanian and Instagram pet photographer Andrew Marttila capture these deeply loved and well cared for animals in their city habitat and reveal how they came to reign over their urban kingdoms.

A celebration of some of the city’s most revered citizens and a unique look at New York life, this enchanting illustrated volume is a must for every cat lover, and every Big Apple devotee.]]>

<![CDATA[Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI]]> 29496196
Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

In this last remnant of the Wild West—where oilmen such as J. P. Getty made their fortunes and where desperadoes such as Al Spencer, the “Phantom Terror, roamed—many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the relatively new FBI took over. It was one of the organization’s first major homicide cases but the bureau badly bungled the investigation. In desperation, the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including an American Indian agents in the bureau. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

In Killers of the Flower Moon, David Grann revisits a shocking series of crimes in which dozens of people were murdered in cold blood. Based on years of research and startling new evidence, the book is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction, as each step in the investigation reveals a series of sinister secrets and reversals. But more than that, it is a searing indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward American Indians that allowed the murderers to operate with impunity for so long. Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly compelling, but also emotionally devastating.]]>

This is the second book I've read, or tried to read, by this author. The actual story is amazing, but the details in this novel come at you so hard and so fast, it's hard to keep track of who is who and what part they played in the story. I am a more visual person, so someone who is more factual may find this book more enjoyable to read. Because that is the way it was written - a list of facts and no real story. It was a huge chore to get through it. I’m giving it two stars because someone tried tackling this subject.

This book about a librarian who changes her life's path is lovely! Who wouldn't enjoy a book about a woman who loves books and does her best to share that passion with others? This story works great as a stand alone, but I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters to the point that I hope there is a sequel so they can be developed even more. A small town in Scotland, charming townspeople, a mobile bookstore, and characters who will have you rooting for them from the moment you meet them. I did not find this story lacking at all.

I enjoyed this book very much. Druga kept the characters to a minimum, allowing good development of all of them. The ending caught me by surprise, a major twist with two of the main protagonists definitely caught my interest close to the end when my interest was just beginning to wane a little.

<![CDATA[An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793]]> 46727
Jim Murphy describes the illness known as yellow fever and the toll it took on the city's residents, relating the epidemic to the major social and political events of the day and to 18th-century medical beliefs and practices. Drawing on first-hand accounts, Murphy spotlights the heroic role of Philadelphia's free blacks in combating the disease, and the Constitutional crisis that President Washington faced when he was forced to leave the city--and all his papers--while escaping the deadly contagion. The search for the fever's causes and cure, not found for more than a century afterward, provides a suspenseful counterpoint to this riveting true story of a city under siege.]]>

What a book - so detailed and fact-filled. I'm not sure if "enjoyable" is an appropriate word when describing how I felt while listening to the audio version of this book considering the subject matter. But it was definitely satisfying and moved along at a steady pace. The author managed to not only discuss the plague of sickness that attacked the city, but also included how one's socio-economic and political status tended to be the deciding factor in what type of treatment you received, if any.

This book was a very satisfying read that enabled me to learn a little more history for a tragic period in our nation's history - one of which I had no knowledge. I recommend this book to others who are interested in our nation's history.

I did learn a few things from the book, and I can see where, during the timeframe in which it was written, it definitely would have had an impact on the people of that time - people of all races.

Overall, the book was a little hard to finish just because of the writing itself - I felt like Stowe wandered a little in her narrative, and it was hard to keep track of what the individual characters were doing and where they were in their stories. However, the content was such that I felt it deserved four stars. For a female to write words regarding slavery, beatings, rape, etc., at that time in history is commendable.

This was an interesting book. I listened to the audio, and I felt that detracted from the content quiet a bit. The dramatics and accents in the spoken narrative were a little much. I wish I had read the words instead of listened to them.

Along his way he has to seek out food, water and shelter where he can, not to mention keeping himself from being killed by any number of now scared and desperate people. During his travels he will try and help where he can, but that can turn out to be a costly mistake. We live in a wonderfully modern society where anything we want is a mouse click away. The lights come on with the flip of a switch and even a child can turn on the faucet at the sink and water always comes out. But what if it all went away?

This book. OMG - Creepy, fantastic, realistic, intense ... talk about gothic horror. This is my first read of a Blackwood writing, and I must say that I am not disappointed. Blackwood has a gift for setting the scene and conveying his characters' emotions and mental destabilization. In our world, willows are beautiful and haunting. Blackwood definitely took "haunting" to another level and left the beautiful far behind. He created this masterpiece of two gentlemen camping on a lonely island full of willows during a time of flood, and it seems this island is a threshold to another dimension. It seemed to me that the willows act as a conduit for otherworldly beings from this other dimension, which - according to one of the characters in the novella - are looking for a human sacrifice. I will definitely be looking for other Algernon Blackwood stories to read. I cannot recommend this novella highly enough.

The Children's Blizzard 6624971
“Heartbreaking. . . . This account of the 1888 blizzard reads like a thriller.” — Entertainment Weekly

The gripping true story of an epic prairie snowstorm that killed hundreds of newly arrived settlers and cast a shadow on the promise of the American frontier.

January 12, 1888, began as an unseasonably warm morning across Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Minnesota, the weather so mild that children walked to school without coats and gloves. But that afternoon, without warning, the atmosphere suddenly, violently changed. One moment the air was calm; the next the sky exploded in a raging chaos of horizontal snow and hurricane-force winds. Temperatures plunged as an unprecedented cold front ripped through the center of the continent.

By the next morning, some five hundred people lay dead on the drifted prairie, many of them children who had perished on their way home from country schools. In a few terrifying hours, the hopes of the pioneers had been blasted by the bitter realities of their harsh environment. Recent immigrants from Germany, Norway, Denmark, and the Ukraine learned that their free homestead was not a paradise but a hard, unforgiving place governed by natural forces they neither understood nor controlled.

With the storm as its dramatic, heartbreaking focal point, The Children's Blizzard captures this pivotal moment in American history by tracing the stories of five families who were forever changed that day. David Laskin has produced a masterful portrait of a tragic crucible in the settlement of the American heartland.

The P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.]]>

This story about an upper class, female member of society traveling to the frontier of Canada to start a school in the early 1900's is utterly charming and wonderful, with Christian values woven throughout the context of the book. I love the way Oke has broken up the chapters in her book, focusing on the main character's tribulations of adjusting to frontier life. Later these tribulations concern the livelihood of her neighbors and students, as well as that special someone she is attracted to. No graphic scenes is very refreshing in a book about love - love for God, her students, this new country she calls home, and her growing love for her Mountie. This was a very enjoyable and easy read with no complications or twists - just a very good story with lovely characters.

What a wonderful Gothic novella. I never felt completely comfortable reading this story, which led to my wanting to flip to the last few pages to fiind out how the story came to a conclusion. But I behaved and didn't! Definitely thought provoking in how times have changed so much in such a relatively short period of time. Excellent read if you slow down and let it soak in. You will be drawn into this character's journey. Wonderful story line and what I found to be unique twists and turns throughout.

Beautifully written. I would have loved some background (and foreground for that matter) to get a better idea of why they were in the small boat with an injured captain. Crane writes in a manner that transports you to the ocean, riding the frothy waves, anticipating the next one that just may capsize the boat. What was lacking, which surprised me since the inhabitants in the boat were all men, was the male ego. It was refreshing to see teamwork, with everyone agreeing to the same course of action, instead of letting their egos argue with the others. This was a very enjoyable read.

<![CDATA[Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them]]> 30199426
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn’t stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon thirty-four more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-seventeenth-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome―a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure. And in turn-of-the-century New York, an Irish cook caused two lethal outbreaks of typhoid fever, a case that transformed her into the notorious Typhoid Mary.

Throughout time, humans have been terrified and fascinated by the diseases history and circumstance have dropped on them. Some of their responses to those outbreaks are almost too strange to believe in hindsight. Get Well Soon delivers the gruesome, morbid details of some of the worst plagues we’ve suffered as a species, as well as stories of the heroic figures who selflessly fought to ease the suffering of their fellow man. With her signature mix of in-depth research and storytelling, and not a little dark humor, Jennifer Wright explores history’s most gripping and deadly outbreaks, and ultimately looks at the surprising ways they’ve shaped history and humanity for almost as long as anyone can remember.]]>

The author adds just enough humor to make this book enjoyable to read. I feel like I've taken a history lesson, which is what I wanted. While there are some gory and very descriptive parts, the book provides more history on not only the plagues, but also the locations, cures, societal effects, and those responsible for developing treatments and vaccinations. The chapter on lobotomies was a little uncomfortable knowing that happened less than a century ago. I'm still surprised that HIV/AIDS did not receive it's own chapter but was rather a part of the epilogue. Very good book - would highly recommend.

In this hilarious book of tongue-in-cheek poetry, the author of the internationally syndicated comic strip Sally Forth helps cats unlock their creative potential and explain their odd behaviour to ignorant humans.

With titles like Who Is That on Your Lap?, This Is My Chair, Kneel Before Me, Nudge, and Some of My Best Friends Are Dogs, the poems collected in I Could Pee on This perfectly capture the inner workings of the cat psyche.

With photos of the cat authors throughout, this whimsical volume reveals kitties at their wackiest, and most exasperating (but always lovable).]]>

UP FROM SLAVERY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
By Booker T. Washington

This volume is dedicated to my Wife Margaret James Washington And to my Brother John H. Washington Whose patience, fidelity, and hard work have gone far to make the work at Tuskegee successful.

Preface

This volume is the outgrowth of a series of articles, dealing with incidents in my life, which were published consecutively in the Outlook. While they were appearing in that magazine I was constantly surprised at the number of requests which came to me from all parts of the country, asking that the articles be permanently preserved in book form. I am most grateful to the Outlook for permission to gratify these requests.

I have tried to tell a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment. My regret is that what I have attempted to do has been done so imperfectly. The greater part of my time and strength is required for the executive work connected with the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and in securing the money necessary for the support of the in]]>

review:
I almost want to rate this short story on two merits - descriptive writing style versus storyline. The writing is pleasant and the story flows very well. It is very descriptive, and even the dated vocabulary gives you a sense of being in the moment. However, the storyline is stagnant throughout the book with the same scene playing over and over again; with each reoccurrence James takes the reader just a step further. The climax of the story was anything but for me ... even James' storyteller said at point that he did not like to use the word "fear" but rather "dread", this when faced with seeing a ghost for the first time. I will compromise and give this three stars. It *was* enjoyable to read this to pass the time, but it will not be a book that I will revisit at any point in the future.
