Now, with his long-awaited new book, "The Winter Harvest Handbook," anyone can have access to his hard-won experience. Gardeners and farmers can use the innovative, highly successful methods Coleman describes in this comprehensive handbook to raise crops throughout the coldest of winters.

Building on the techniques that hundreds of thousands of farmers and gardeners adopted from "The New Organic Grower" and "Four-Season Harvest," this new book focuses on growing produce of unparalleled freshness and quality in customized unheated or, in some cases, minimally heated, movable plastic greenhouses.

Coleman offers clear, concise details on greenhouse construction and maintenance, planting schedules, crop management, harvesting practices, and even marketing methods in this complete, meticulous, and illustrated guide. Readers have access to all the techniques that have proven to produce higher-quality crops on Coleman's own farm.

His painstaking research and experimentation with more than 30 different crops will be valuable to small farmers, homesteaders, and experienced home gardeners who seek to expand their production seasons.

A passionate advocate for the revival of small-scale sustainable farming, Coleman provides a practical model for supplying fresh, locally grown produce during the winter season, even in climates where conventional wisdom says it "just can't be done."]]>

<![CDATA[Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals about Our Everyday Deceptions]]> 7873438 "This book doesn't just promise to change the way you think about sleight of hand and David Copperfield—it will also change the way you think about the mind." —Jonah Lehrer, author of How We Decide and Proust Was A Neuroscientist

Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde, the founders of the exciting new discipline of neuromagic, have convinced some of the world's greatest magicians to allow scientists to study their techniques for tricking the brain. This book is the result of the authors' yearlong, world-wide exploration of magic and how its principles apply to our behavior. Magic tricks fool us because humans have hardwired processes of attention and awareness that are hackable—a good magician uses your mind's own intrinsic properties against you in a form of mental jujitsu.

Now magic can reveal how our brains work in everyday situations. For instance, if you've ever bought an expensive item you'd sworn you'd never buy, the salesperson was probably a master at creating the "illusion of choice," a core technique of magic. The implications of neuromagic go beyond illuminating our behavior; early research points to new approaches for everything from the diagnosis of autism to marketing techniques and education. Sleights of Mind makes neuroscience fun and accessible by unveiling the key connections between magic and the mind.

<![CDATA[The Self-Hypnosis Formula: The Technique to Hypnotize Yourself into Hypnotic Realities, Meditation, Lucid Dreaming, Sleep and More]]> 54550527 How to Hypnotize Yourself in 7 Quick and Easy StepsWould you like the exact steps to move from wide awake and alert, to being deep inside a hypnotic reality of your own creation?Perhaps you'd like to supercharge the results you get when listening to hypnosis recordings?Or maybe you just want to explore your mind a bit more and have some fun.

Inside this book, you'll find a simple 7-step process that's been designed so that anyone can follow it and go into deep hypnosis. And once you're there, the possibilities are endless.

As with lucid dreaming, the hypnotic realities created by this method can seem as real as real life itself.

All that's needed is a process that anyone can follow, and a tiny bit of effort to get there.

I've designed the process in this book to be a quick and easy method that anyone can use to go from not even knowing what self-hypnosis is, to potentially experiencing full hypnotic realities in the space of a few hours.

When I first learnt self-hypnosis many years ago, the process I followed worked, but it took ages to implement and get going. Back then I had to expend 2 hours of focused effort every time I wanted to go into deep hypnosis.

Luckily, since that time, I've learnt new techniques, and then developed my own so that anyone can hypnotize themselves as quickly as humanly possible.

The process that I cover inside this book is quick and easy. It's been designed so that anyone who follows the steps can move from not even knowing that self-hypnosis exists, to being able to do it in less than an hour.

After you've perfected being able to induce self-hypnosis on demand, we then move onto how to induce profoundly deep hypnotic trances in yourself.

These deep states of hypnosis typically require a skilled hypnotist to guide you to them. Most people never get there from a recording by itself. The processes inside this book have been designed to make it easy.

Once you've learnt to access these deep states of hypnosis, you'll find that you can use them to supercharge any hypnotic processes you might choose.

Inside this

A simple 7 step process designed to lead you all the way into hypnosis. How to focus your mind and clear our any thoughts that may be disturbing you.How to move your mind into a state that's perfect for hypnosis of any kind. How to induce self-hypnosis. With a bit of practice, people can get into self-hypnosis using this method in under 3 minutes. How to deepen self-hypnosis, intensifying any experiences you might have while you're there. How to go on a journey inside your self-hypnosis, and step into your own hypnotic reality. How to engage hypnotic time distortion, so that you can spend large amounts of time inside your hypnotic reality, while very little time passes out in the waking world. How to direct your subconscious mind to automatically solve your problems for you while you explore your hypnotic reality.Worked examples on how to use the processes in this book to overcome problems typically addressed by hypnotherapy, and how to hone any skill you might possess so that you can absolutely master it.How to use the process in this book to move directly from awake into a lucid dream. How to make any changes permanent so that they stick. If you've struggled with self-hypnosis and want a simple step-by-step process that anyone can follow...]]>

The ongoing struggle between Israel and Palestine is one of the most bitter conflicts in history, with profound global consequences. In this book, Middle East expert Michael Scott-Baumann succinctly describes its origins and charts its evolution from civil war to the present day. Each chapter offers a lucid explanation of the politics and ends with personal testimony from Palestinians and Israelis whose lives have been impacted by the dispute.Ěý While presenting competing interpretations, Scott-Baumann examines the key flash points, including the early role of the British, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the Six-Day War of 1967, and the Trump administration’s peace plan, pitched as “the deal of the century,â€ in 2020. He delineates both the nature of Israeli control over the Palestinian territories and Palestinian resistance—going to the heart of the clashes in recent decades. The result is an indispensable history, including a time line, glossary, and analysis of why efforts to restore peace have continually failed and what it will take to succeed.]]>

<![CDATA[Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1)]]> 61431922 Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders...

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die]]>

Past Life Regressions 218733869 It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Lyrically, I wanted to explore themes of past lives and parallel selves, so this is probably my most New Age album, at least in terms of the general concept.

My attention drifted towards various spiritual videos starting in 2020, and the most intriguing was a short past life regression seminar presented by author and inspirational speaker Mira Kelley. I had no idea what to expect but it definitely left a strong impression as I still return to it from time to time when I need to get out of my head. Whether or not you believe in New Age philosophies, she has an incredibly uplifting voice and the most serene loving aura, so I would recommend her work to anyone, regardless of your worldview.

I won't bore you too much with my own interpretations of past life regressions or if time is actually nonlinear, but her story really vibed with me and I wouldn't have formed this album without finding her video and buying her book, Beyond Past Lives. She explains early on that her own mental and physical pain was cured by exploring the power of past life regression therapy to heal an unexplainable trauma.

Her anguish originated from a tormented past life as a slave, and took the form of TMJ, which is something I have dealt with in my youth as well. This is probably why I connected so much to her from the start, plus the topic of parallel lives is a really captivating Sci-Fi type of concept.

Although I enjoy her writing and positive approach to healing yourself, I don't exactly believe in New Age science. My cynicism just won't allow me to accept that there are multiple souls inside of my body longing to find peace and a purposeful exit, but I've been wrong about a ton of shit before so who cares what I believe.

You would think my Catholic upbringing would actually encourage me to believe in parallel lives, since the Holy Trinity was preached to me at a very young age, being that God represents the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all wrapped up in one omnipotent entity. In addition to that doctrine, every time you take communion you are supposedly ingesting the actual body and blood of God the Son, as he further claims your body as a vessel to spread his message. If this doesn't sound similar to some of the New Age theories out there, then you're just refusing to see the correlations.

There are so many movies and shows that deal with parallel universes, especially in our modern streaming-overload culture, which can really fuck with your idea of time and space, maybe best highlighted within the alternative reality of The Man in the High Castle (even though this was originally written by Philip K. Dick in 1962). From Rick and Morty to Russian Doll to The OA, it seems like so much of today's entertainment might lead the viewer to research The Many-Worlds Interpretation proposed in 1957 by Hugh Everett, which must have been an even greater mindfuck back then.

Past life regression therapy is built upon the idea that we’re eternal beings that move from life to another in different place and time. As perpetual spirits, we come across bodily existence on Earth in a series of persona and physical bodies. On a spiritual level, we choose every lifetime as a way to learn the lessons we’ve to head off for ourselves. Exploring our life in the past through a therapy for apparently inexplicable physical or mental issues is known as Past Life Regression Therapy. It works together with beliefs of reincarnation and takes us back in earlier life to get a better understanding of our life we live in the present.
In this book, we will tell you everything you need to know about Past Life Regression and how you can even perform it on yourself without the help of a hypnotherapist.

<![CDATA[Behavior Adjustment Training 2.0: New Practical Techniques For Fear, Frustration, and Aggression: New Practical Techniques for Fear, Frustration, and Aggression in Dogs]]> 29248981 Empower your dog to gain confidence and social skills

With BAT 2.0, trainer/author Grisha Stewart has completely overhauled Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) to create a new efficient and practical tool for dog reactivity. BAT 2.0 builds resilience and self-reliance by giving dogs safe opportunities to learn about people, dogs, or other "triggers." Clear enough for all readers to follow, this book also includes technical tips and bonus chapters just for dog behavior professionals.
Learn how to:
Rehabilitate aggression, frustration, and fear.
Use survival skills to prevent reactivity on walks and at home.
Use a long line to safely maximize your dog's freedom of movement.
Apply Grisha's BAT philosophy to all dogs and puppies...and get your life back!

What experts are saying about Behavior Adjustment Training
BAT 2.0 is a must-read for anyone who has or works with reactive dogs. For years, dogs all over the world have benefited from the successful philosophies and empowering techniques in BAT, but Grisha Stewart has taken it to the next level. A clear appreciation for the canine experience and easy to follow, practical techniques is what makes BAT 2.0 so beneficial for dogs that experience frustration, anxiety, or fear in any social situation. Stewart gives control back to the dog allowing a delicate balance of freedom, the ability to make choices and safety. I highly recommend BAT 2.0 to anyone who is struggling with a reactive dog or who wants to gain a better understanding of their canine companion.
Victoria Stilwell, author, Train Your Dog Positively

When I ask behavior professionals, "What are your eyes for?" they enthusiastically reply, "To see!" But when I ask, "What is your behavior for?" conference rooms fall silent. In BAT 2.0, Grisha Stewart provides the essential answer to this all-important question: Behavior is to have an effect, that is, to be effective. By safely allowing dogs more control over their own outcomes, especially in challenging conditions where fearful, frustrated, and aggressive behavior is most likely, caregivers will be more successful shaping independent, competent, confident companions.

If any of these apply to you and you don’t want to take potentially harmful chemicals to gain a sense of peace and balance, I have good news for you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT for short might be the treatment you’ve been looking for. Completely chemical-free and natural, it uses your own mind’s internal processes and ability to make associations to unleash a better version of yourself.

This book explains what CBT is, how it works, and how you can benefit from it. It also guides you through a 10 step process where your awareness of how your mind works can lead to greater personal happiness, peace, and joy.

Written in plain English, this book helps you achieve a higher level of personal clarity. It turns out that a lot of the things that bother you or prevent you from living your life to its highest potential are all self-inflicted. They are products of how you habitually process information from the outside world.

By training you to see how your mind â€automaticallyâ€ draws connections between the stimuli you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste and emotional states, you learn how to produce different results.

That’s right - you don’t have to remain â€stuckâ€ in negative thought and emotional patterns. These lead to the same bad decisions over and over again. By focusing on the key part of the process that you fully control - your thoughts and your ability to judge your personal reality, you can end up making the kind of decisions that will take your life to a higher level.

Just because you’ve been frustrated all this time doesn’t mean you have to continue to struggle. Change is possible.

<![CDATA[Friendly Fascism: The New Face of Power in America (Forbidden Bookshelf)]]> 29448940 A look at corporate authoritarianism that William Shirer called “the best thing I’ve ever seen on how America might go fascist democratically.â€ In 1980, US capitalist politics wore a “nice-guy mask,â€ a troubling disguise to cover up a creeping despotism in which the ultra-rich and corporate overseers were merging with a centralized state power in order to manage the populace. This immanent corporate authoritarianism threatened to subvert constitutional democracy. But unlike the violent and sudden usurpations that led to fascism in the days of Hitler, Mussolini, and the Japanese empire builders, this new “smilingâ€ American breed of fascism was gaining ground through gradual and silent infringements on the freedoms of the American people. Ěý First published over three decades ago, Friendly Fascism is uncannily predictive of the threats and realities of current political and economic power trends. Author Bertram Gross, a presidential adviser during the New Deal era, traces the history and logic of declining democracy in First World countries and pinpoints capitalist transnational growth and inappropriate responses to global crises as the sources of late twentieth-century despotism in America. Gross issues ever-urgent warnings about what happens when big business and big government become bedfellows—chronic inflation, recurring recession, overt and hidden unemployment, the poisoning of the environment—and simultaneously proffers a practical shift of perspective that could help US citizens build a truer democracy. He imagines an America in which heroes are no longer needed and the leadership is a group of non-elitists who “recognize the ignorance of the wise as well as the wisdom of the ignorant.â€ Ěý]]> 442 Bertram M. Blindsight (Firefall, #1) 48484 Two months since the stars fell...

Two months since sixty-five thousand alien objects clenched around the Earth like a luminous fist, screaming to the heavens as the atmosphere burned them to ash. Two months since that moment of brief, bright surveillance by agents unknown.

Two months of silence while a world holds its breath.

Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune’s orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever’s out there isn’t talking to us. It’s talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route.

So who do you send to force introductions on an intelligence with motives unknown, maybe unknowable? Who do you send to meet the alien when the alien doesn’t want to meet?

You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees X-rays and tastes ultrasound, so compromised by grafts and splices he no longer feels his own flesh. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won’t be needed, and a fainter hope she’ll do any good if she is needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called “vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist an informational topologist with half his mind gone as an interface between here and there, a conduit through which the Dead Center might hope to understand the Bleeding Edge.

You send them all to the edge of interstellar space, praying you can trust such freaks and retrofits with the fate of a world. You fear they may be more alien than the thing they’ve been sent to find.

But you’d give anything for that to be true, if you only knew what was waiting for them…]]>

The Heat Will Kill You FirstĚý is about the extreme ways in which our planet is already changing.ĚýIt is about why spring is coming a few weeks earlier and fall is coming a few weeks later and the impact that will have on everything from our food supply to disease outbreaks. It is about what will happen to our lives and our communities when typical summer days in Chicago or Boston go from 90° F to 110°F. A heatwave, Goodell explains, is a predatory eventâ€ one that culls out the most vulnerable people.Ěý But that is changing. As heatwaves become more intense and more common, they will become more democratic.ĚýĚý

As an award-winning journalist who has been at the forefront of environmental journalism for decades, Goodell’s new book may be his most provocative yet, explaining how extreme heat will dramatically change the world as we know it.Ěý Masterfully reported, mixing the latest scientific insight with on-the-ground storytelling, Jeff Goodell tackles the big questions and uncovers how extreme heat is a force beyond anything we have reckoned with before.

<![CDATA[Porkopolis: American Animality, Standardized Life, and the Factory Farm]]> 49231165 Porkopolis Alex Blanchette explores how this rural community has been reorganized around the life and death cycles of corporate pigs. Drawing on over two years of ethnographic fieldwork, Blanchette immerses readers into the workplaces that underlie modern meat, from slaughterhouses and corporate offices to artificial insemination barns and bone-rendering facilities. He outlines the deep human-hog relationships and intimacies that emerge through intensified industrialization, showing how even the most mundane human action, such as a wayward touch, could have serious physical consequences for animals. Corporations' pursuit of a perfectly uniform, standardized pig—one that can yield materials for over 1000 products—creates social and environmental instabilities that transform human lives and livelihoods. Throughout Porkopolis, which includes dozens of images by award-winning photographer Sean Sprague, Blanchette uses factory farming to rethink the fraught state of industrial capitalism in the United States today.]]> 320 Alex Blanchette 1478007893 Gail 0 to-read 4.61 Porkopolis: American Animality, Standardized Life, and the Factory Farm

The author really explains EFT Tapping well. Before reading this book, I was a doubting Thomas about EFT Tapping. This is the exact book I was looking for, a how to book. No fluff, just helpful stuff. Tessa explained that tapping with one hand is best. I tried it and it worked! This book has been both inspiring and helpful for me personally.* I’ve read several books on EFT tapping and have tapped along with various led tapping sessions and recordings. Not one thing ever changed AT ALL. I was very skeptical and couldn’t understand why so many people were so sold on EFT and rave how amazingly it had worked for them and I was getting NOTHING out of it at all. My doctor raved about EFT and strongly recommended that I learn more about energy work and DO IT...IMMEDIATELY.]]> 166 Tessa Cason Gail 0 currently-reading 4.06 All Things EFT Tapping Manual: Emotional Freedom Technique

<![CDATA[The Art and Science of EMDR: Helping Clinicians Bridge the Path from Protocol to Practice]]> 123733597
Therapists who are trained in EMDR can facilitate healing in the most profound ways. But successful treatment requires more than following a rigid script or a protocol. It requires bringing both the art and science of EMDR into the therapy room.

In The Art and Science of EMDR, clinicians will learn how to do just that. Grounded in the principles of neurobiology and the science of deliberate practice, this book teaches both new and seasoned EMDR clinicians how to apply the phase-based model of EMDR in a more holistic way. Instead of conceptualizing EMDR in an inflexible and linear manner, clinicians will learn how to adapt the protocol to each client’s needs while maintaining authenticity to the model (and to who they are as therapists and humans).

Whether you are an EMDR trainer, consultant, or practitioner, this user-friendly guide will help

Understand a client’s presenting problems through the lens of neuroscienceIdentify and overcome common mistakes during preparation and resourcingIndividualize a client’s inner resourcesDevelop regular mindfulness habits that improve client outcomesBring more fluidity to the assessment phaseSet the groundwork for effective processing and learn when to interveneBring the principles of deliberate practice to EMDR trainings and consultations]]>

Thunderstruck & Other Stories 18339643 The Giant’s Housefinalist for the National Book Award—comes a beautiful new story collection, her first in twenty years. Laced through with the humor, the empathy, and the rare and magical descriptive powers that have led Elizabeth McCracken’s fiction to be hailed as “exquisite (The New York Times Book Review), “funny and heartbreaking (The Boston Globe), and “a true marvel (San Francisco Chronicle), these nine vibrant stories navigate the fragile space between love and loneliness. In “Property, selected by Geraldine Brooks for The Best American Short Stories, a young scholar, grieving the sudden death of his wife, decides to refurbish the Maine rental house they were to share together by removing his landlord’s possessions. In “Peter Elroy: A Documentary by Ian Casey, the household of a successful filmmaker is visited years later by his famous first subject, whose trust he betrayed. In “The Lost & Found Department of Greater Boston, the manager of a grocery store becomes fixated on the famous case of a missing local woman, and on the fate of the teenage son she left behind. And in the unforgettable title story, a family makes a quixotic decision to flee to Paris for a summer, only to find their lives altered in an unimaginable way by their teenage daughter’s risky behavior.

In Elizabeth McCracken’s universe, heartache is always interwoven with strange, charmed moments of joy—an unexpected conversation with small children, the gift of a parrot with a bad French accent—that remind us of the wonder and mystery of being alive. Thunderstruck & Other Stories shows this inimitable writer working at the full height of her powers.]]>

Seventeen-year-old Sena Korhosen hates the sled race, especially after it claimed both her mothers' lives five years ago. Alone on her frozen planet, she makes money any other way she can—until she double-crosses a local gangster.

They'll pay her way off-world, on one condition--that she uses the survival skills her mothers taught her to get them to the end of the race. But the tundra is a treacherous place. When the race threatens their lives at every turn, Sena must discover whether her abilities are enough to help them survive the wild, and whether she and Iska together are strong enough to get them all out alive.

As the girl and the wolf forge a tenuous bond and fight to escape ice goblins, giant bears, and the ruthless gang leader intent on trapping them both, one question drives them relentlessly forward: Where do you turn when there is nowhere to hide?

The Last Beekeeper 60784449
"Fans of Delia Owens will swoon to find their new favorite author. (Hank Phillippi Ryan)

It’s been more than a decade since the world has come undone, and Sasha Severn has returned to her childhood home with one goal in mind―find the mythic research her father, the infamous Last Beekeeper, hid before he was incarcerated. There, Sasha is confronted with a group of squatters who have claimed the quiet, idyllic farm as their own. While she initially feels threatened, the group soon becomes her newfound family, offering what she hasn't felt since her father was security and hope. Maybe it's time to forget the family secrets buried on the farm and focus on her future.

But just as she settles into her new life, Sasha witnesses the impossible. She sees a honey bee, presumed extinct. People who claim to see bees are ridiculed and silenced for reasons Sasha doesn't understand, but she can't shake the feeling that this impossible bee is connected to her father's missing research. Fighting to uncover the truth could shatter Sasha's fragile security and threaten the lives of her newfound family―or it could save them all.

Julie Carrick Dalton's The Last Beekeeper is a celebration of found family, an exploration of truth versus power, and the triumph of hope in the face of despair. It is a meditation on forgiveness and redemption and a reminder to cherish the beauty that still exists in this fragile world.

The Memory of Animals 62972519 From the award-winning author of Our Endless Numbered Days, Swimming Lessons, Bitter Orange, and Unsettled Ground comes a beautiful and searing novel of memory, love, survival―and octopuses.

In the face of a pandemic, an unprepared world scrambles to escape the mysterious disease’s devastating symptoms: sensory damage, memory loss, death. Neffy, a disgraced and desperately indebted twenty-seven-year-old marine biologist, registers for an experimental vaccine trial in London―perhaps humanity’s last hope for a cure. Though isolated from the chaos outside, she and the other volunteers―Rachel, Leon, Yahiko, and Piper―cannot hide from the mistakes that led them there.

As London descends into chaos outside the hospital windows, Neffy befriends Leon, who before the pandemic had been working on a controversial technology that allows users to revisit their memories. She withdraws into projections of her past―a childhood bisected by divorce; a recent love affair; her obsessive research with octopuses and the one mistake that ended her career. The lines between past, present, and future begin to blur, and Neffy is left with defining questions: Who can she trust? Why can’t she forgive herself? How should she live, if she survives?

The Memory of Animals is an ambitious, deeply imagined work of survival and suspense, grief and hope, consequences and connectedness, that asks what truly defines us―and the lengths we will go to rescue ourselves and those we love.]]>

<![CDATA[Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America]]> 36228413 "Belew's book helps explain how we got to today's alt right."―Terry Gross, Fresh Air

The white power movement in America wants a revolution. Its soldiers are not lone wolves but highly organized cadres motivated by a coherent and deeply troubling worldview made up of white supremacy, virulent anticommunism, and apocalyptic faith. In Bring the War Home, Kathleen Belew gives us the history of a movement that consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s around a potent sense of betrayal in the Vietnam War and made tragic headlines in Waco and Ruby Ridge and with the Oklahoma City bombing and is resurgent under President Trump.

Returning to an America ripped apart by a war they felt they were not allowed to win, a small group of veterans and active-duty military personnel and civilian supporters concluded that waging war on their own country was justified. They unified people from a variety of militant groups, including Klansmen, neo-Nazis, skinheads, radical tax protestors, and white separatists to form a new movement of loosely affiliated independent cells to avoid detection. The white power movement operated with discipline and clarity, undertaking assassinations, armed robbery, counterfeiting, and weapons trafficking. Its command structure gave women a prominent place and put them in charge of brokering alliances and birthing future recruits.

Belew's disturbing and timely history reminds us that war cannot be contained in time and space: grievances intensify and violence becomes a logical course of action. Based on years of deep immersion in previously classified FBI files and on extensive interviews, Bring the War Home tells the story of American paramilitarism and the birth of the alt-right.]]>

Primitives 60293362
Thirty years after The Great Fatigue infected the globe—and the treatment regressed most of the human race to a primitive state—Seth Keller makes a gruesome discovery in his adoptive father’s makeshift lab. This revelation forces him to leave the safety of his desert home and the only other person left in the world…at least, as far as he knows.

Three thousand miles away in the jungles of Costa Rica, Sarah Peoples has made her own discovery—just as horrific, and just as life-changing. It will take her far from the fledgling colony of New Haven, yet never out of reach of its ruthless authoritarian leader.

On separate journeys a world apart, Seth and Sarah find themselves swept up in a deadly race to save humankind. Their fates will come crashing together in an epic struggle between good and evil, where the differences aren’t always clear. Among the grim realities of civilization’s demise, they discover that the remaining survivors may pose an even greater threat than the abominations they were taught to fear.

Fighting for their lives, they’re confronted with a haunting question.

Does humanity deserve to survive?

How We Live Is How We Die 61142207
Poignant for readers of all ages, her teachings on the bardos—a Tibetan term referring to a state of transition, including what happens between this life and the next—reveal their power and relevance at each moment of our lives. She also offers practical methods for transforming life’s most challenging emotions about change and uncertainty into a path of awakening and love. As she teaches, the more freedom we can find in our hearts and minds as we live this life, the more fearlessly we’ll be able to confront death and what lies beyond. In all, Pema provides readers with a master course in living life fully and compassionately in the shadow of death and change.]]>

<![CDATA[A Time of Courage (Of Blood and Bone, #3)]]> 52549368 Battle the dark
Reclaim the world

The Demon-King of the Otherworld is finally free. And armed with mighty new starstone weapons, Asroth prepares to lead his demonic war-host south. With the help of his dark bride Fritha, he plans to crush the warrior-angels and their allies.

In the shadows of Forn Forest, Riv and the surviving Ben-Elim hold a war council. After the catastrophic events at Drassil, they are desperate to unite those who would stand against Asroth and his army. So they fly west, to join the Order of the Bright Star. But Drem and the Order are besieged by a demon horde and their fragile defence may soon shatter.

Across the Banished Lands armies are heading south, to settle ancient grudges and decide the fate of humanity. Drem, Riv and the Bright Star’s warriors will need every ounce of their courage if they are to join the final battle. But will their combined forces be enough to face down their greatest foe?

In A Time of Courage, angels, demons and heroes face the ultimate fight for the Banished Lands. Thousands of years of enmity will be put to the test, in the epic conclusion to John Gwynne's mighty trilogy.

'Reminds me of why I became a fantasy enthusiast in the first place'
Robin Hobb on A Time of Dread

'This book is so damned good . . . John Gwynne writes fantasy with the heart of a hero and the inventiveness of a master mage'

<![CDATA[Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior]]> 718983 Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them.
The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.]]>

<![CDATA[Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting]]> 54895704
Have you ever felt a crushing wave of panic when you can't for the life of you remember the name of that actor in the movie you saw last week, or you walk into a room only to forget why you went there in the first place? If you're over forty, you're probably not laughing. You might even be worried that these lapses in memory could be an early sign of Alzheimer's or dementia. In reality, for the vast majority of us, these examples of forgetting are completely normal. Why? Because while memory is amazing, it is far from perfect. Our brains aren't designed to remember every name we hear, plan we make, or day we experience. Just because your memory sometimes fails doesn't mean it's broken or succumbing to disease. Forgetting is actually part of being human.

In Remember, neuroscientist and acclaimed novelist Lisa Genova delves into how memories are made and how we retrieve them. You'll learn whether forgotten memories are temporarily inaccessible or erased forever and why some memories are built to exist for only a few seconds (like a passcode) while others can last a lifetime (your wedding day). You'll come to appreciate the clear distinction between normal forgetting (where you parked your car) and forgetting due to Alzheimer's (that you own a car). And you'll see how memory is profoundly impacted by meaning, emotion, sleep, stress, and context. Once you understand the language of memory and how it functions, its incredible strengths and maddening weaknesses, its natural vulnerabilities and potential superpowers, you can both vastly improve your ability to remember and feel less rattled when you inevitably forget. You can set educated expectations for your memory, and in doing so, create a better relationship with it. You don't have to fear it anymore. And that can be life-changing.]]>

Terraform: Watch/Worlds/Burn 57693611 An anthology of near future science fiction from VICE's acclaimed, innovative digital speculative story destination, Terraform--in print for the first time.

Terraform hones the predictive capacity of science fiction and seeks new, vivid, and visceral ways to depict the future we're hurtling toward, translating the decay and anxiety that surround us into something else, something unexpected, something that burns like a beacon and upends the conventional ideas of where we'll end up next.

Section by section--Watch/Worlds/Burn--the book takes on surveillance, artificial intelligence, and climate collapse. With a potent roster of established names and rising talents--from Bruce Sterling, Ellen Ullman, Cory Doctorow, Jeff VanderMeer, and Omar El Akkad, to E. Lily Yu, Elvia Wilk, Fernando Flores, Tochi Onyebuchi, and Gus Moreno--it confronts the issues that orbit our everyday existence, and takes them to unsettling dimensions.]]>

<![CDATA[A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life]]> 55290026 A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times.

In his introduction, Saunders writes, “We’re going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world, made for a specific purpose that our time maybe doesn’t fully endorse but that these writers accepted implicitly as the aim of art—namely, to ask the big questions, questions like, How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it? He approaches the stories technically yet accessibly, and through them explains how narrative functions; why we stay immersed in a story and why we resist it; and the bedrock virtues a writer must foster. The process of writing, Saunders reminds us, is a technical craft, but also a way of training oneself to see the world with new openness and curiosity.

A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is a deep exploration not just of how great writing works but of how the mind itself works while reading, and of how the reading and writing of stories make genuine connection possible.]]>
