The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was an absolute masterpiece! I think this might even be my favourite book in the series. I read The Hunger Games trilogy for the first time when I was 12, and as I get older the books (and movies) only get better as I understand them at a deeper level and see the resemblances to our world today. The amount of thought and detail that was put into Panem is astonishing, every detail is so well thought through, Suzanne Collins' mind is truly incredible. It was so interesting to read this from Snow's perspective, I loved how it gave so much context to his actions in the original trilogy, especially his hate for mockingjays, which the movie omits. His inner monologue as he descends into madness is gripping. Collins does a brilliant job of making Snow fluctuate between good and bad choices, which at times can make you question whether or not you are rooting for him. Tigris was by far my favourite character, and Hunter Schafer did a stunning job as her in the film. I really enjoyed all of the subtle callbacks to the original trilogy, like the relatives of different characters, The Hob and The Seam, and the hidden meaning behind it being "a little too early for katniss". The thought of Snow hearing Katniss sing 'Deep in the Meadow' for Rue in the 74th Hunger Games and 'The Hanging Tree' as the song of the rebellion in Mockingjay, had me cackling after learning the background of the songs. He seriously deserves to rot in hell. I highly recommend picking this up if you're a Hunger Games fan, it will not disappoint!

“Lucy Gray’s fate was a mystery, then, just like the little girl who shared her name in that maddening song. Was she alive, dead, a ghost who haunted the wilderness? Perhaps no one would ever really know. pg. 514

The Fake Mate 123199658
Noah, interventional cardiologist and all-round grump, has spent his entire life hiding what he is - an unmated alpha. But when an anonymous tip brings everything to light, he's left with two choices: come clean to the board and risk his career or find himself a mate. So, when the chatty, overly friendly ER doctor asks him to be her fake boyfriend the same day he's called to meet the board, it must be kismet, right?

Mackenzie gets her grandmother off her back, and Noah gets the chance to prove he can continue to work without a real mate - it's a mutually beneficial business transaction. But when the fake-mate act turns to a very real friends-with-benefits arrangement, lines start to blur, and they quickly realise love is a whole different kind of animal.]]>
372 Lana Ferguson 0593549376 Emma Griffioen 4 3.5/5 stars! The Fake Mate is a fun, fake dating romance, that is the perfect fall/Halloween read. it follows Mackenzie Carter, an Omega, and Noah Tyler, an Alpha, who are both doctors at the same hospital and agree to be fake mates to benefit one another. I had never read something that takes place in the Omegaverse, but it was cute, steamy, and overall really funny, which I was not expecting from a wolf-shifter romance. I really love the fake dating trope as well, so this one was right up my alley!

I enjoyed The Fake Mate much better than The Nanny , Lana Ferguson's debut, which I read and reviewed in July. one thing that bothered me about nanny, was the 2-dimensional characters, but in The Fake Mate, both main characters, and all of the side characters were well fleshed out! The banter in this book was also way smoother than the cringy dialogue in The Nanny, and her writing is stronger as well. It honestly reminded me of Ali Hazelwood's books because of the hospital setting, so if you're a fan of her books or a fan of paranormal romance, I highly recommend picking this book up!

The Nanny 61530932 A woman discovers the father of the child she is nannying may be her biggest (Only)Fan in this steamy contemporary romance by Lana Ferguson.

After losing her job and being on the brink of eviction, Cassie Evans finds herself with two choices: get a new job (and fast) or fire up her long-untouched OnlyFans account. But there are no jobs to be found, and as for OnlyFans. . . . Well, there are reasons she can’t go back. Just when all hope seems lost, an ad for a live-in nanny position seems the solution to all her problems. It’s almost too perfect—until she meets her would-be employer.

Aiden Reid, executive chef and DILF extraordinaire is far from the stuffy single dad Cassie was imagining. She is shocked when he tells her she’s the most qualified applicant he’s met in weeks, practically begging her to take the job. With hands that make her hindbrain howl and eyes that scream sex, the idea of living under the same roof as Aiden feels dangerous, but with no other option, she decides to stay with him and his adorably tenacious daughter, Sophie.

Cassie soon discovers that Aiden is not a stranger at all, but instead someone who is very familiar with her—or at least, her body. She finds herself at a loss for what to do, given that he doesn’t remember her. As their relationship heats to temperatures hotter than any kitchen Aiden has ever worked in, Cassie struggles with telling Aiden the truth, and the more terrifying possibility—losing the best chance at happiness she’s ever had.]]>
421 Lana Ferguson 059354935X Emma Griffioen 2 I don't know what i was expecting going into The Nanny, but whatever this was, was worse.

I've been eyeing this book since it came out, and c'mon, a former OnlyFans girl becoming the nanny for a single dad, sounds so entertaining, but the execution was just bad! The characters were boring, the plot was non-existent and the spicy scenes were carbon copies of one another. I honestly felt like I was in some Groundhog Day situation for most of the book. The writing didn't help either, it was pretty choppy, I'm honestly kind of surprised this was traditionally published.

This was the first half of the book: They would have an awkward conversation where one of them says something really unprofessional, they would avoid each other for a bit, and then "accidentally" bump into each other in the kitchen to have another weird conversation that would end awkward, and then they'd repeat the cycle. I'm not even kidding this happened a minimum of 3 times! And then the second half was just sex, no plot (not that the first half had much plot anyway). The worst part was they were so BORING! There was no chemistry between them, besides the fact that they thought each other was hot, so I just didn't care. They had no personality except that Diden was busy with work and Cassie had bad parents. But even that was underdeveloped because we hardly got any scenes of him at work (or literally doing anything other than coming home from a long day) even though it was a dual POV, and I swear we never even found out what Cassie's parents did, only that she moved out at 18. And don't even get me started on her Snapple facts... it was giving the same energy as the Ellen letters from It Ends with Us ]]>

What Does it Feel Like? 219823395 From #1 bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, an unforgettable story—by turns heartbreaking and life-affirming—of a renowned novelist facing a devastating diagnosis and learning to live and love anew.

What Does It Feel Like? is fiction, but it is my most autobiographical work to date. Eve’s story is my story.”—Sophie Kinsella

Eve is a successful novelist who wakes up one day in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there. Her husband, never far from her side, explains that she has had an operation to remove the large, malignant tumor growing in her brain.

As Eve learns to walk, talk, and write again—and as she wrestles with her diagnosis, and how and when to explain it to her beloved children—she begins to recall what’s most important to her: long walks with her husband’s hand clasped firmly around her own, family game nights, and always buying that dress when she sees it.

Recounted in brief anecdotes, each one is an attempt to answer the type of impossible questions recognizable to anyone navigating the labyrinth of grief. This short, extraordinary novel is a celebration of life, shot through with warmth and humor—it will both break your heart and put it back together again.

“Why did I write such a personal book? I have always processed my life through writing. Hiding behind my fictional characters, I have always turned my own life into a narrative. It is my version of therapy, maybe. Writing is my happy place, and writing this book, although tough going at times, was immensely satisfying and therapeutic for me.”—Sophie Kinsella]]>

She left her small hometown of Meadowlark, Wyoming; went to college; and made a career for herself by doing her favorite thing: riding horses. But after an accident makes it impossible for her to get back into the saddle, she has no choice but to return to the hometown she always wanted to escape.

Luke Brooks is Meadowlark’s most notorious bad boy, bar owner, and bachelor. He’s also the unofficial fifth member of the Ryder family. As Emmy’s older brother’s best friend, Luke spent most of his childhood antagonizing her. It’s been years since he’s seen her, but when she walks into his bar and back into his life, he can’t take his eyes off her. Despite his better judgment, he wants to do a whole lot more than just look at her.

Emmy’s got too much on her mind to think about romance. And Luke knows he should stay away from his best friend’s younger sister. But what if Luke is just what Emmy needs to get her spark back? Or will they both go up in flames?]]>

<![CDATA[The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties (Aunties, #3)]]> 181344918 What should have been a family celebration of Chinese New Year descends into chaos when longtime foes crash the party in this hilariously entertaining novel by Jesse Q. Sutanto, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties.

After an ultra-romantic honeymoon across Europe, Meddy Chan and her husband Nathan have landed in Jakarta to spend Chinese New Year with her entire extended family. Chinese New Year, already the biggest celebration of the Lunar calendar, gets even more festive when a former beau of Second Aunt’s shows up at the Chan residence bearing extravagant gifts—he’s determined to rekindle his romance with Second Aunt and the gifts are his way of announcing his courtship.
Ěý
His grand gesture goes awry however, when it’s discovered that not all the gifts were meant for Second Aunt and the Chans—one particular gift was intended for a business rival to cement their alliance and included by accident. Of course the Aunties agree that it’s only right to return the gift—after all, anyone would forgive an honest mistake, right? But what should have been a simple retrieval turns disastrous and suddenly Meddy and the Aunties are helpless pawns in a decades-long war between Jakarta’s most powerful business factions. The fighting turns personal, however, when Nathan and the Aunties are endangered and it’s up to Meddy to come up with a plan to save them all.Ěý Determined to rescue her loved ones, Meddy embarks on an impossible mission—but with the Aunties by her side, nothing is truly impossible…]]>
304 Jesse Q. Sutanto 0593546237 Emma Griffioen 2 The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties was a completely unnecessary addition to this series, and somehow even more unrealistic than the first two books. This third installment follows Meddy and her husband Nathan, who decide to join the Aunties, and Meddy's extended family in Jarkarta for Chinese New Year, after their European honeymoon. And of course, all hell breaks loose. I was hoping for character development and a plot line that was different from the first 2 books, and I got neither. It really felt like Sutanto was just dragging the story for the sake of making this series a trilogy. And just like in the first 2 books, the entire "problem" is solved within the last 2 chapters, which made it feel really rushed.

The Woman in Me 63133205 The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.

In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.]]>
288 Britney Spears 1668009048 Emma Griffioen 4 “My father shoved aside my bowl of receipts, setting up his things on the bar. “I just want to let you know, he said, “I call the shots. You sit right there in that chair and I’ll tell you what goes on.
I looked at him with a growing sense of horror.
“I’m Britney Spears now, he said.
pg. 182

Britney Spears, The Princess of Pop, is arguably one of the most mistreated people in Hollywood, and especially after the events in the past few years, I was highly anticipating this memoir. It was equal parts happy, because Britney is finally able to share, in her own words, what she went through the past 15 years, and equal parts horrific because the abuse she experienced isn't something anyone should be put through.

“The saddest part to me was that what I always wanted was a dad who would love me as I was—somebody who would say, “I just love you. You could do anything right now. I’d still love you with unconditional love. pg. 23

Although The Woman in Me does not explain everything, it gives context to a lot of the situations that the media focused on throughout the 2000s, including her relationship with Justin Timberlake, the shaved head/hitting a paparazzi car with an umbrella incident (which I don't think anyone will ever forget), and her marriage to Kevin Federline. Most importantly, she discussed her experience with the conservatorship, which as we know was perpetrated by her dad, Jamie Spears, for 13 years! It was heartbreaking to read about the enablers of the conservatorship, including her mom, Lynne Spears, and how much everyone, including the court system, misled and took advantage of her during these years. She is so brave for making the final 911 call which ultimately led to the end of the conservatorship.

“Why was it so easy for everyone to forget that I was a human being—vulnerable enough that these headlines could leave a bruise? pg. 100

The memoir felt more authentic than I anticipated, even though she worked with ghostwriters (like most celebrities do when writing memoirs), which pleasantly surprised me! I personally have fallen down the rabbit hole of Britney Spears conspiracy theories multiple times in the past few years, and I am not sure if this memoir convinced me that she is 100% safe. I was hoping she would talk about her marriage with Hesam Asghari, and their "wedding" (If you know, you know. If you don't, look it up on TikTok LOL), but from the sections where he is mentioned, it seems like she wrote this when they were still together. Overall, it was a really enjoyable read, I would recommend it not only to fans of Britney Spears and celebrity memoirs but to anyone looking to pick up a quick read because Britney deserves for her truth to be heard. #FreeBritney]]>

#FreeBritney

Meet Me at the Lake 61797464
At thirty-two, Fern's life doesn't look at all how she once imagined it would. Instead of living in the city, Fern's back home, running her mother's Muskoka lakeside resort—something she vowed never to do. The place is in disarray, her ex-boyfriend's the manager, and Fern doesn't know where to begin.

She needs a plan—a lifeline. To her surprise, it comes in the form of Will, who arrives nine years too late, with a suitcase in tow and an offer to help on his lips. Will may be the only person who understands what Fern's going through. But how could she possibly trust this expensive-suit wearing mirage who seems nothing like the young man she met all those years ago. Will is hiding something, and Fern's not sure she wants to know what it is.

But ten years ago, Will Baxter rescued Fern. Can she do the same for him?]]>
336 Carley Fortune 0735243786 Emma Griffioen 3 my book clubs (@ejgbookclub on instagram) first book! thankfully it ended up being a super summery, cute romance, just as i hoped!

meet me at the lake takes place during 2 timelines, the present day in muskoka, and 10 years earlier in toronto, on the day fern met will baxter. the timeline in the past follows fern and will on their unforgettable day together where they decide to have no contact but to meet up in exactly a year. one year later, will is inevitably a no show, leaving fern wondering about their only day spent together. the timeline in the present follows fern as she decides whether or not to move back to muskoka and take over her mother's lakeside resort after her unexpected passing, when all of a sudden will shows up hired as a consultant to help with the resort.

fern and will were cute, but i found it hard to fully root for them because their relationship started in a way that i consider cheating, even if its emotional cheating. there's nothing wrong with spending time or being friends with someone no matter their gender, but the day they spent together, while she had a boyfriend of 4 years, was super inappropriate. i also really expected the day to have a little more umph to be described as SO life-altering and memorable, but maybe my expectations were too high. i also don't really know why jamie was a character in the later timeline if it wasn't going to be a love triangle situation. it was just a reminder of the cheating to me and made it hard to root for fern and will in the second timeline as well. i was really kind of team jamie... lol.

i really loved learning about ferns mom and peter, omg i could read a whole book about those two - they reminded me of characters from an elin hilderbrand novel! the setting was also adorable, it reminded me of high school musical 2, especially with the end of summer dance.

overall, it was a great summer read! it did not live up to every summer after, but i was not really expecting it to. it was definitely different enough from esa while maintaining the canadian summer atmosphere i enjoyed so much from carley fortune when reading her debut. i am so so excited to chat about it next weekend on my book club's instagram - make sure to follow and join if you're interested!

random note: i also had an elaborate theory in my head for like half the book that the reason why will never showed up in the past timeline was because he was his "niece's" bio dad, and his older sister took on the roll as her mother. and will was too busy and stressed about the baby mom walking out (just like his mom did), and he thought he'd do the same so he signed parental rights over to his sister to give the baby a more stable upbrining. i also thought thats why he stopped his art and just worked to provide for his sister and niece/bio daughter. i was wrong but i mean that would definitely be what happened if this was a colleen hoover book... Counting the Cost 167770288
Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines. She didn’t protest the strict model of patriarchy that her family followed, which declares that men are superior, that women are expected to be wives and mothers and are discouraged from attaining a higher education, and that parental authority over their children continues well into adulthood, even once they are married.

But as Jill got older, married Derick, and they embarked on their own lives, the red flags became too obvious to ignore. For as long as they could, Jill and Derick tried to be obedient family members they weren’t willing to rock the boat. But now they’re raising a family of their own, and they’re done with the secrets. Thanks to time, tears, therapy, and blessings from God, they have the strength to share their journey. Theirs is a remarkable story of the power of the truth and is a moving example of how to find healing through honesty.]]>
287 Jill Duggar Emma Griffioen 5 "You want to know why I'm crying?" My voice was cracked, my eyes burning. "It's that you think I'm some kind of horrible person just because I wear pants and have a nose ring, and yet you see the girl outside and praise her. That's why I'm crying, Daddy. I'm evolving and changing, just like that girl out there, but you can't see it. You treat me like I'm a prodigal who's turned her back on you. You treat me worse than you treat my pedophile brother." pg. 268

Like many others, I grew up watching the 19 Kids and Counting TV show on TLC, not because I am religious, or a part of the IBLP, but because I thought the family was so interesting. I watched live as Josh Duggar's involvement in the Ashley Madison scandal came out to the public, and when the information about his abuse toward his sisters came out, I watched the Jill and Jessa interview with Megyn Kelly. By then I knew the family was not healthy, and to some extent abusive but I continued watching as Jill and Jessa: Counting on was on TLC. Over the years it has become clear that Job-Bob was abusive and controlling to his children in many, many ways, however, the documentary that was released earlier this year really put the abuse into perspective for their wider audience and even the general public.

"I was blind to it at the time, but eventually, I would see just how dangerous and toxic IBLP's teachings about authority were in my life." pg. 74

Although Jill's memoir covers similar topics that are discussed in the documentary, (which she was a part of) what I really enjoyed about this book was hearing it from her perspective, and in her words. You could tell through her writing how empowered she was to be finally telling her story, and I know this book will reach and inspire hundreds of people to find their voice and do the same. If not, it will be validating to people in similar situations of familial abuse and control, whether there are ties to religion or not, and without a doubt in my mind will help many leave similar situations.

“It seemed to me that he was realizing that he was losing control of me. He’d text verses reminding me to “honor thy father and mother, and every conversation we had just heaped more guilt on me, leaving fear gripping my throat even tighter. Often he would text me and apologize, but the messages were often followed up by more words condemning our actions or calling us out. His apologies felt insincere and invalid. Hardly a day would go by without some barbed message from him—either directly or from one of my siblings—and it got so that I didn’t want to talk to him anymore." pg. 210

Overall, as a fan of Jill Duggar as a little girl, and as a big fan of her now as an adult, all I have to say is that I am so proud of her. The fact that she named the things Jim-Bob (and sometimes Michelle) were doing to her as abuse, and called her brother Josh a pedophile, are two of many clear signs in this book that she's been able to break out of the cult control of the IBLP, Bill Gothard's 7 basic life principles, the umbrella of authority, the abusive control of her parents, and deprogram and grow from all she's been through. It was also encouraging to read about how many of her siblings (whom she doesn't name, which I respect so much) now have come to her for advice on how to ensure Jim-Bob does not infiltrate, dictate, or influence their marriages, and how others have followed in her footsteps of wearing pants, drinking alcohol, using birth control, etc. She is such a huge role model, and if the rest of the kids see through her that freedom from the control their under is possible, hopefully, it will be easier for them if they decide to follow in her footsteps. I am so happy she was able to find a husband and partner as supportive as Derrick and wish nothing but peace and happiness for her, Derrick, and their 3 beautiful children.

If you are a former fan of the 19 Kids and Counting TV show, the Duggars in general, religious cults, or celebrity memoirs I highly recommend reading Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar. It was real, emotional, and extremely impactful. It is definitely one of my favourite celebrity memoirs I've ever read, and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes my top 10 books of 2023 list at the end of the year!]]>

Crying in H Mart 54814676
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humour and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the east coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, performing gigs with her fledgling band and meeting the man who would become her husband her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live.

It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.

Vivacious, lyrical and honest, Michelle Zauner’s voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.]]>
243 Michelle Zauner 0525657746 Emma Griffioen 5 Beautifully written and heartbreaking, Crying in H Mart is one of my favourite books of 2023 so far. The real and raw emotions surrounding family, career paths, growing up, and grief are balanced out by descriptions of food that leave your stomach grumbling and mouth-watering. It is a unique and powerful memoir that, in my opinion, is a must read.

Written by Michelle Zauner, who is the lead singer of the pop band Japanese Breakfast, Crying in H Mart takes the reader through Michelle's upbringing, into adulthood where her mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and then through the grief of that experience, before her band took off internationally. While reading, I was constantly underlining quotes, and it's safe to say that they speak for themselves.

Here are some of my favourite quotes:

"My grief comes in waves and is usually triggered by something arbitrary." pg. 5

"We caught up with each other's postgraduate lives. He had just finished a cover story on Lana Del Rey and when I pressed him for details on the interview, he told me she chain-smoked through its entirety and recorded the whole thing on her iPhone to guard against misquotes, which endeared me to her." pg. 42 I love Lana ]]>

No One Is Talking About This 53733106
As this urgent, genre-defying book opens, a woman who has recently been elevated to prominence for her social media posts travels around the world to meet her adoring fans. She is overwhelmed by navigating the new language and etiquette of what she terms "the portal," where she grapples with an unshakable conviction that a vast chorus of voices is now dictating her thoughts. When existential threats—from climate change and economic precariousness to the rise of an unnamed dictator and an epidemic of loneliness—begin to loom, she posts her way deeper into the portal's void. An avalanche of images, details, and references accumulate to form a landscape that is post-sense, post-irony, post-everything. "Are we in hell?" the people of the portal ask themselves. "Are we all just going to keep doing this until we die?"

Suddenly, two texts from her mother pierce the fray: "Something has gone wrong," and "How soon can you get here?" As real life and its stakes collide with the increasingly absurd antics of the portal, the woman confronts a world that seems to contain both an abundance of proof that there is goodness, empathy, and justice in the universe, and a deluge of evidence to the contrary.

Fragmentary and omniscient, incisive and sincere, No One Is Talking About This is at once a love letter to the endless scroll and a profound, modern meditation on love, language, and human connection from a singular voice in American literature.]]>

InĚý Black Friend , she turns her incisive perspective on the culture at large. Throughout the book, Ziwe combines pop-culture commentary and her own personal stories. And when they do, it is important to remember that they usually result in an incredibly privileged person temporarily experiencing slightly less privilege than they were accustomed to, which is still a very high baseline of privilege compared to the rest of the world. Personally, I long to be a canceled rich man because that is just a vacation." Pg. 78

This was a witty and insightful collection of essays by comedian, writer and talk show host, Ziwe! It had an element of memoir in it as well, as Ziwe shared many personal experiences from her youth, time in college, and at the start of her career. It was a very perceptive and thought-provoking collection, that not only fans of Ziwe should read, but that people, in general, could learn from, especially since the humour aspect and format make it very accessible.

The problems I had with this book were the footnotes and the grey boxes of text. The footnotes took away from my focus almost every time. I didn't find they gave enough context to things mentioned in the essays to be fully necessary, and there were just far too many in each chapter/essay. There were also many personal anecdotes via the footnotes, that I think would have served more of a purpose if they were just included in the essay rather than having to flip to the footnote every time. Additionally, the grey boxes of text seemed very unnecessary and really took me out of the essay every time they were included. If they were put in between chapters/essays they would have been less of a bother, but adding them within the essays just felt like an interruption.

Overall, I am happy I read this collection of essays, especially since I love Ziwe's talk show. I would recommend it to any fan of hers, especially because it is a short, but lively read.]]>

Pure Colour 57693639 Pure Colour is a galaxy of a novel: explosive, celestially bright, huge, and streaked with beauty. It is a contemporary bible, an atlas of feeling, and an absurdly funny guide to the great (and terrible) things about being alive. Sheila Heti is a philosopher of modern experience, and she has reimagined what a book can hold.

Here we are, just living in the first draft of Creation, which was made by some great artist, who is now getting ready to tear it apart.

In this first draft of the world, a woman named Mira leaves home to study. There, she meets Annie, whose tremendous power opens Mira’s chest like a portal—to what, she doesn’t know. When Mira is older, her beloved father dies, and his spirit passes into her. Together, they become a leaf on a tree. But photosynthesis gets boring, and being alive is a problem that cannot be solved, even by a leaf. Eventually, Mira must remember the human world she’s left behind, including Annie, and choose whether or not to return.]]>

i didn’t know what to expect going into this other than the fact that i’ve seen a lot of negative reviews and that it was horror. it definitely made my stomach hurt while reading and i’m not really sure i get the point of it. there were things redacted by the police which i thought we would get to see in the end or know what they were alluding to but the last email was pretty straightforward to how agnes died. i’d like to read about zoe’s trial if i were to get anything else from this story and these two characters.

The Roommate Pact 62325755 All of the fun, none of the heartache…as long as they stick to the agreement.

The proposition is simple: if ER nurse Claire Harper and her roommate, firefighter GrahamĚýScott, are still single by the time they’re forty, they’ll take the proverbial plunge together…as friends with benefits. Maybe it’s the wine, but in the moment, Claire figures the pact is a safe-enough deal, considering she hasn’t had much luck in love and he’s in no rush to settle down. Like,Ěýat all. Besides, there’s no way she could everĚýreallyĚýfall for Graham and his thrill-seeking ways. Not after what happened to her fatherâ€

Just as things begin to heat up way before the proposed deadline, Graham’s injured in a serious rock-climbing accident—and he needs Claire’s help to heal. She’ll do whatever it takes to nurse him back to health…even if it means moving into Graham’s bed and putting up with his little dog who hates her. But with this no-strings arrangement taking a complicated turn, keeping “for now from turning into “forever isn’t as easy as they’d planned.]]>

Lessons in Chemistry 58065033 390 Bonnie Garmus Emma Griffioen 3 "I've never understood why when women marry, they're expected to trade in their old names like used cars, losing their last and sometimes even their first - Mrs. John Adams! Mrs. Abe Lincoln - as if their previous identities had just been twenty-odd-year placeholders before they became actual people. Mrs. Peter Dickman. It's like a life sentence. pg. 52

Lessons in Chemistry is a witty book that explores womanhood, career struggles, and feminism in the 1950s/60s. It follows a female chemist, Elizabeth Zott, who works for Hastings Research Institute in that time period. Zott is not interested in the things women "should" be interested in, such as getting married and being a Mom, rather she loves science and is focused on making a name for herself in her career. She is a strong, quirky, and empowering main character, I really enjoyed reading about her!

I did have a few problems with the book, the overall structure and pacing felt off. The foreshadowing of Supper at Six at the beginning was unnecessary to me, I wish we'd just learned about it as the story unraveled. The paragraphs and writing overall were very choppy and made it difficult to follow what was happening in each chapter since it jumped around so much from paragraph to paragraph. I also really didn't like how the dog (whose name is Six-Thirty) had its own thoughts that we read, especially since it only started happening halfway through the book. The plot was lacking in my opinion, it felt like the entire time I was waiting for something big to happen, but nothing did, and this made the whole book slow to get through. I was never excited to pick this one up, I was forcing myself to finish it because it was August book.

Although I liked the overall message of Lessons in Chemistry, and Elizabeth Zott as a main character, it was not a good fit for me, but I can see why it really worked for others! This is the August pick for my book club! Join us over on instagram @ ]]>

The Egg 17563539 A short story about the universe and your place in it.

"You were on your way home when you died. It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. ... And that’s when you met me."

The Egg is a short story written by Andy Weir, his most popular, and follows a nameless 48-year-old man who discovers the "meaning of life" after he dies. The story is about "you" (in the second person), and God, who is "me" (in the first person). God says that you have been reincarnated many times before, and that you are soon to be reincarnated once more, leading to quite a few existential questions.

Andy Weir (1972-) built a career as a software engineer until the success of his first published novel, The Martian (2011), allowed him to live out his dream of writing fulltime. He is a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of subjects such as relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. He also mixes a mean cocktail.]]>

Box Hill 49214539 Box Hill is a sizzling, sometimes shocking, and strangely tragic love story between two men, set in the gay biker community of the late 1970s. Beautifully written, intimate, and profoundly affecting, Adam Mars-Jones's first novel in almost a decade is the winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize.]]> 160 Adam Mars-Jones 1922310107 Emma Griffioen 4 box hill was a very interesting read! i hadn't heard of it ahead of coming across it at the library, so i had no clue what to expect. it follows the narrator, colin on his 18th birthday when he meets a biker, ray, who is significantly older than him, in box hill. he has his first sexual experience with ray, goes home with him, and doesn't leave for 6 years. it describes their dominant/submissive relationship, while also revealing the biker's secret poker group, where some questionable things take place. i really really enjoyed colin as the narrator, the writing style and the setting!

i couldn't really figure out how the author meant for the reader to feel while reading this, especially about ray and colin's relationship. i interpreted it similarly to the concept in 'my dark vanessa', where the narrator is reflecting on a past inappropriate relationship where they were being taken advantage of. when reading reviews after i finished the book, i found mixed interpretations, some people thought it shed light on sub/dom relationships in a positive way, as they are often looked upon with shame. others found the narrator frustrating and hard to sympthize with, which is to be expected as the extended title is box hill: a story of low self-esteem. overall, my conclusion was that it was an incredibly thought-provoking book, and shed light on situations that aren't often discussed in literature. i also found this interview with the author, adam mars-jones really really good to watch after finishing the book, and i highly recommend checking it out regardless of if you're going to read it. it definitely helped me put together my thoughts after reading box hill!]]>

339 Jesse Q. Sutanto 0593549228 Emma Griffioen 2 Unfortunately, I can officially say that Jesse Q. Sutanto's books are not for me. I honestly don't know what I was thinking picking this up, I gave both Dial A for Aunties and Four Aunties and a Wedding 2 stars... but this cover was so cute, I had to give her one last chance.

This is a very character-driven story. Vera, the main character, who is a 60-year-old widow and tea shop owner, turned amateur detective, was very witty, however, her "I'm just an old lady I can do whatever I want" pushiness got old fast. The supporting characters were interesting enough, however, the plot was so weak that the characters didn't make up for it. I was waiting the entire time to figure out who had murdered Marshall in Vera's tea shop and it was underwhelming to say the least. It was "solved" in the last 2 chapters, and they briefly mentioned a trial but gave no real closure. There was way too many pop culture references, especially TikTok, which really wrecks the longevity of the book in my opinion.

I think one of the fundamental problems with Sutanto's books is that they are marketed wrong. For example, the blurb about Jesse at the back of this book described Dial a for Aunties as "women's fiction" and that is (in my opinion) entirely wrong. all 3 of her books have also been described as thrillers which couldn't be further from the truth. I really think they should all be labeled as young adult/humour. It is safe to say I will not be picking up her next book, however, I do think there is an audience out there for Sutanto's books, it is just not me.

<![CDATA[Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents]]> 23129659 If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, or abandonment. You may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met, when your feelings were dismissed, or when you took on adult levels of responsibility in an effort to compensate for your parent’s behavior. These wounds can be healed, and you can move forward in your life.

In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect, and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood. By freeing yourself from your parents emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you’ll learn how to create positive, new relationships so you can build a better life.

Discover the four types of difficult parents:

The emotional parent instills feelings of instability and anxiety

The driven parent stays busy trying to perfect everything and everyone

The passive parent avoids dealing with anything upsetting

The rejecting parent is withdrawn, dismissive, and derogatory

201 Lindsay C. Gibson 1626251703 Emma Griffioen 5 read via audiobook! i have been searching for a book on this topic for the past 2 years as, unfortunately, this subject pertains to me. this one was spot on, validating, informative and undoubtedly one of the best non-fiction/self-help books i’ve ever read.

i am a very self-aware person, have a degree in sociology, am in therapy, and understand that i am an adult child of emotionally immature parents, so naturally going into this i thought it would be filled with everything i've already heard/researched/learned on my own, in school and with my therapist. yet i learned tons, and i am so so happy that i did. some things that set this book apart compared to others of similar nature are that it discussed what may have happened to the parent to make them emotionally immature, the different ways children respond to emotionally immature parents, how to deal with emotionally immature parents after becoming aware of this, different ways to help heal from emotionally immature parents and develop emotionally mature/intelligent habits going forward. usually i find that self-help/psychology books touch on one or two of these kinds of points, but lack in demonstrating how you can implement what you learned in the book in real life. but this one covered it all!

some concepts that i learned about, that i highly recommend those in similar situations to look into are:
- the role self vs the true self
- internalizers vs externalizers
- emotional contagion
- consemptatory cheerfulness (!!!)
- family systems theory (learned about this in school but i wanted to highlight it as i think it is very valuable)
- enmeshment

i can’t recommend this enough to those who are adult children of emotionally immature parents, suffer from extreme anxiety/cptsd due to childhood, have a parent who is a narcissist, or those looking to support a loved one in one of these situations. i am really looking forward to buying a physical copy to reread, annotate, and pass on to others!]]>

<![CDATA[Her Body and Other Parties: Stories]]> 33375622 Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella Especially Heinous, Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgangers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes.

Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.

248 Carmen Maria Machado 155597788X Emma Griffioen 5 "What is worse: being locked outside of your own mind, or being locked inside of it?" pg. 215

Her Body and Other Parties is a collection of queer, feminist, horror short stories, that explore a number of common struggles and themes that plague our everyday lives as women. Using a variety of classic horror stories, urban legends, and contemporary shows, mixed with magical realism, fantasy, sci-fi, and dystopia, Machado writes of motherhood, femininity, societal expectations, and violence against both women's bodies and minds. It was strange, mesmerizing, haunting, and emotional, with riveting yet elegant prose.

"A wife, he says, “should have no secrets from her husband.
“I don’t have any secrets, I tell him.
“The ribbon.
“The ribbon is not a secret; it’s just mine.
“A wife should have no secrets.
My nose grows hot. I do not want to cry.
“Why do you want to hide it from me?
“I’m not hiding it. It just isn’t yours.
pg. 24

My favourite story in this collection was 'The Husband Stitch' which is a modern retelling of the classic children's scary story, 'The Green Ribbon', featured in Alvin Schwartz's collection In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories. In this story, Machado explores the themes of autonomy, gender roles, motherhood, and the patriarchy, through a woman chronicling her life and marriage from aged 17 onward in first-person narration. One thing that really elevated this story was the references to other classic scary stories from Alvin Schwartz's collection Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which she used to emphasize her main themes. These included the stories, Just Delicious, The Girl Who Stood on a Grave, The Big Toe, The Wolf Girl, and The Hook, and I remember my classmates and I read all of these scary stories to one another out loud at around age 10, which added an element of nostalgia for me. Additionally, I loved the instructions included in parenthesis throughout the story for what to do if you were reading this story out loud.

“I drank water and set up my tent and began to make lists. Every teacher beginning with preschool. Every job I’ve ever had. Every home I’ve ever lived in. Every person I’ve ever loved. Every person who has probably loved me. Next week, I will be thirty. The sand is blowing into my mouth, my hair, the center crevice of my notebook, and the sea is choppy and gray. Beyond it, I can see the cottage, a speck on the far shore. I keep thinking I can see the virus blooming on the horizon like a sunrise. I realize the world will continue to turn, even with no people on it. Maybe it will go a little faster. pg. 48

Although this collection is not for everyone, I think it is a really exceptional piece of work, especially for a debut. Some of my other favourites in the collection include 'Real Women Have Bodies', 'Eight Bites', and 'The Resident'. Although there is a large focus on the abuse endured by women's bodies, there was the celebration of our bodies as well. Machado's ability to trap you inside the mind of a character is really rare, I adore her writing so much and look forward to reading the next thing she writes!

This is my book club's October book club pick, read along with us on Instagram: !

<![CDATA[Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two (Harry Potter, #8)]]> 29056083
It was always difficult being Harry Potter, and it isn't much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and a father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son, Albus, must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is the complete and official playscript of the original, award-winning West End production. This updated edition includes the final dialogue and stage directions, a conversation piece between director John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne, the Potter family tree, and a timeline of events in the wizarding world leading up to "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."]]>

i decided to reread this before seeing the cursed child play in toronto last weekend and im so glad i did because i remembered nothing!!

i took one star off my original rating when i read it back in 2016 when it came out because honestly this reads like fanfiction, and i had a hard time feeling fully immersed in the harry potter world while reading it because of that. scorpious and albus felt real, but delphi is where it kind of fell flat for me. i think if 'the augery' would have been mentioned more in the original series, or explained better throughout the play it would have felt more connected to the original books.

however, the actual play felt sooo much better than the script book. the whole theatre had been repainted for the show, they had merch and butter beer and people were all dressed up in harry potter outfits!! me and my younger brother went together and i wore my hufflepuff scarf and he had a hfiflepuff pin and a little pickett figure (newt scamanders little friend) ]]>

<![CDATA[Beyond the Wand: The Magic & Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard]]> 61062194 From the magical moments on set as Draco Malfoy to the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, get a backstage pass into Tom Felton’s life on and off the big screen in this #1 New York Times bestseller.

Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school.

Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the muggle world. He tells stories from his early days in the business like his first acting gig where he was mistaken for fellow blonde child actor Macaulay Culkin and his Harry Potter audition where, in a very Draco-like move, he fudged how well he knew the books the series was based on (not at all). He reflects on his experiences working with cinematic greats such as Alan Rickman, Sir Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith, and Ralph Fiennes (including that awkward Voldemort hug). And, perhaps most poignantly, he discusses the lasting relationships he made over that decade of filming, including with Emma Watson, who started out as a pesky nine-year-old whom he mocked for not knowing what a boom mic was but who soon grew into one of his dearest friends. Then, of course, there are the highs and lows of fame and navigating life after such a momentous and life-changing experience.

Tom Felton’s Beyond the Wand is an entertaining, funny, and poignant must-read for any Harry Potter fan. Prepare to meet a real-life wizard.]]>

one thing i really appreciated was that i actually learned quite a few things. growing up i was the kid who had seen every single extra scene, behind the scenes video, etc, for harry potter, but there were actually things that surprised me in tom's memoir! *minor spoilers* i had no clue he had been to rehab multiple times, or that he had dated jade for so long!!

Kate in Waiting 54647963 From #1 New York Times bestselling author and rom-com queen Becky Albertalli comes a buoyant new novel about daring to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight in love, life, and, yes, theater.

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off-script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.]]>
400 Becky Albertalli Emma Griffioen 3 "It makes me wish you could film a whole entire moment. Not just the visuals and vocals. I want to hold every piece of this. I want to save the details for later: the breeze ruffling my hair through the open car windows, the soft warmth of my flannel. The feeling of being sixteen on a Friday night in September." pg. 238

Kate in Waiting is a YA romance following Kate and her best friend Andy who are notorious for pining over the same guy, which they call their â€communal crushesâ€, but it is always from a far. That is until their summer crush from theatre camp, Matt Olssen, shows up at their school on the first day of Junior year. Both of them end up developing real feelings for Matt, but neither of them don’t want to hurt one another or lose their friendship.

Becky Albertalli is one of my favourite YA authors, but Kate in Waiting was my least favourite of the books of hers so far. One of my favourite things is her ability to write friend groups that feel really authentic and who you can’t help falling in love with. There was a lot of focus on platonic friendships, and diverse representation across the cast of characters, which was great! I loved all of the scenes where they were rehearsing for the musical, this was honestly the ultimate theatre kid book! Within her internal dialogue, Kate did give slight pick-me energy but didn’t we all at 15? I really enjoyed how both Kate and Andy’s romances played out, they felt really sweet and giddy, which in my experience is exactly how it feels to fall in love for the first time/in high school.

My issue with this book ultimately came down to a mediocre concept and the fact that it felt really repetitive. Kate and Andy kept having conversations about not wanting to hurt one another by having a crush on the same guy, but then one of them would get annoyed about something the other one did, and then they would apologize to one another and be best friends again. It was very cyclical, and a few of the “problems that took place were unrealistic and juvenile (even for a YA book). As an older sister, Kate and her brother Ryan’s relationship really tugged at my heartstrings, I just wish Kate would have given him more credit as the novel progressed when it came to him moving to college and wanting to spend more time with her.

I did read this in one evening, which has become a theme for me and Albertalli’s books, which I love. I would recommend Kate in Waiting to anyone who was/is a theatre kid in high school, and to fans of the show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series!

The Lover 181478167 During a brutal winter, a young woman longing for love finds more than she expected in the woods, in this wickedly sensuous short story by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic.

Judith knows her sister, Alice, is the pretty one—but that doesn’t stop her from wishing for love. When a handsome and gentlemanly hunter appears in their village, seeking lodging from the cold, she believes her lover has finally arrived. He does, indeed, choose to stay—but as Alice’s husband, not her own. When another stranger comes out of the woods, looking every bit a vagrant, he offers Judith something mysterious and enticingly strange. Against reason and decency, she welcomes both men into her life, in different ways. As forbidden longings ensnare each of them, an unrelenting winter storm and an evasive wolf on the prowl have everyone on edge…and ravenous. By spring thaw, will any of their hungers be satisfied?]]>

The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a whimsical and haunting short story that is very reminiscent of a Grimm's fairy tale. Based on The Little Red Riding Hood, it follows Judith, a young maiden, living with her beautiful older sister. She ends up falling head over heels for her sister Alice's charming husband Nathaniel, however, soon after an unnamed man crosses her path as well. Launched into an affair with Nathaniel and an interesting relationship with the unnamed man, Judith's story unfolds in a twisted and page-turning way. The writing was stunning and left me wanting to read more from Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This is the perfect cozy, yet chilling short story to read by the fire this winter!]]>

After my ex crushed my dreams in the music industry, I’m done with getting my heart broken. Working as an assistant for an NHL player was supposed to be a breeze, but nothing about Jamie Streicher is easy. He’s an intimidatingly hot, grouchy jerk who can't stand me. The guy has a massive ego. Keeping things professional will be no problem, even when he demands I move in with him.

Beneath his surliness, though, Jamie’s surprisingly sweet and protective.

When Jamie learns how bad my ex was in bed, his competitive nature flares, and he encourages and spoils me in every way. The creative spark I used to feel about songwriting? It’s back, and I’m writing music again. Between wearing his jersey at games, rowdy parties with the team, and being brave on stage again, I’m falling for him.

He could break my heart, but it might be worth it.

<![CDATA[The Right Move (Windy City, #2)]]> 84943172
She’s a distraction, that’s what she is.

I’m the newest Captain of the Devils, Chicago’s NBA team, and the last thing I needed this year was for Indy Ivers, my sister’s best friend, to move into my apartment. She’s messy, emotional, and way too tempting.

But when the team’s General Manager vocalizes his blatant disapproval of my promotion to Captain, referring to me as an unapproachable lone wolf with no work-life balance, I can’t think of a better way to convince him otherwise than pretending to date my outgoing roommate.

The only problem? Faking it feels far too natural.

Having a fake girlfriend wasn’t supposed to be messy but having Indy under my roof and in my bed is complicated, especially when she wants all the romantic parts of life that I could never give her.

INDY

I never imagined I’d be living with my best friend’s brother, NBA superstar Ryan Shay. Even more unbelievable? He needs me to act as his loving girlfriend who’s suddenly changed him into a friendly and approachable guy.

Because, well…he’s not. He’s controlling of his space and untrusting of others.

Our arrangement isn’t one-sided, though. I’m in a wedding coming up, one where every one of my childhood friends, including my ex-boyfriend, will be in attendance, and there’s no better date than my ex’s celebrity hero.

Blurred lines make it almost impossible to separate real from fake. Falling for my roommate was never part of the deal, especially when Ryan is quick to remind me that he doesn’t believe in love.

I’m a romantic and can’t help fantasizing that he’ll change, but soon enough, I find myself questioning if sharing a roof with my best friend’s brother was the right move after all]]>

<![CDATA[The Honeymoon Crashers (Unhoneymooners, #1.5)]]> 128138997
A perfectionist maid of honor and a carefree, surfer-bro best man team up to plan a wedding and end up finding a spark of their own in the first audio original from author duo Christina Lauren, a full-cast sequel to theirĚýNew York TimesĚýbestsellerĚýThe Unhoneymooners.

Ami is determined to break the Torres family wedding curse. Her own disaster of a reception ended with all the guests getting food poisoning, and she left her cheating husband soon after. But even though she’s still processing her own divorce, Ami won’t let her twin sister Olive’s day be anything but perfect. Olive may think she wants a private ceremony in Maui, where she and her fiancé Ethan first fell in love, but Ami knows better and secretly flies the whole Torres family out to surprise the couple. Now she and her meticulously organized binder have less than two weeks to get everything together for the big day, thousands of miles from home.

Enter Brody, Ethan’s best man, who happens to be living in Maui and insists on helping with the preparations. His playfully elaborate schemes and happy-go-lucky attitude are the last thing Ami needs. When sparks start to fly, could it derail all her carefully laid plans?

Equal parts hilarious and swoon-worthy, this full-cast production is your ticket to the ultimate destination wedding, bringing to life both a captivating couple and an unforgettable family.ĚýThe Honeymoon CrashersĚýis Christina Lauren at their charming, hilarious best.]]>
5 Christina Lauren 1797158147 Emma Griffioen 3 The Honeymoon Crashers is an audio novella follow-up to The Unhoneymooners by author duo Christina Lauren. It follows Olive's divorced twin sister, Ami, who takes it upon herself to plan Olive and Ethan's destination wedding in only a week, with the goal of breaking the Torres family wedding curse. Ami, who has a typical type-A personality, is forced to team up with Ethan's best man, Brody, to plan the wedding, and he is the exact opposite of her, with a laid-back positive attitude but has tons of connections on the island to help with the planning.

This was equally fun as it was cheesy. I really enjoyed The Unhoneymooners when I read it 3 summers ago, and where that one felt like a cute rom-com, this one just felt a bit cringe. It was really fun to revisit these characters though, especially Diego, he is my favourite! My main issue was that this is a full cast audiobook, with different actors for each character, but half of the time whoever was narrating the current chapter read all the dialogue and the other half they used the full cast with different voices. It was really inconsistent and wrecked the point of having a full cast. If you were a fan of The Unhoneymooners it's worth getting from Libby or at the library, but don't spend $12 on Amazon to get it. It was quick, fun, cheesy, but ultimately forgettable.]]>

I really loved Out On A Limb by Hannah Bonam Young, which was my introduction to her books back in August, but I was actually kind of disappointed by this book. It felt a lot like insta love, despite the main characters being friends for 20 years, and the fake dating trope did not hit. It used to be one of my favourite tropes but nowadays it feels so overused if there is nothing unique added to the situation or arrangement. The story progressed too fast, so each event felt very rushed. I think this could have done really well as a full length novel, so that each character and plot point had more time to develop, rather than just being one short chapter. I did love that this takes place in Toronto, but their hometown was never specified, and if it was I really think that would have helped deepen and detail the story. Overall it was short, steamy, and sweet, so if you’re looking for a novella that will take you under 2 hours to read, pick this up!

Bright Young Women 124967653
On the other side of the country, Tina Cannon has found peace in Seattle after years of hardship. A chance encounter brings twenty-five-year-old Ruth Wachowsky into her life, a young woman with painful secrets of her own, and the two form an instant connection. When Ruth goes missing from Lake Sammamish State Park in broad daylight, surrounded by thousands of beachgoers on a beautiful summer day, Tina devotes herself to finding out what happened to her. When she hears about the tragedy in Tallahassee, she knows it’s the man the papers refer to as the All-American Sex Killer. Determined to make him answer for what he did to Ruth, she travels to Florida on a collision course with Pamela—and one last impending tragedy.]]>
384 Jessica Knoll 1668046067 Emma Griffioen 4 Bright Young Women is a historical fiction thriller following the case of a notorious serial killer, who is only referred to as â€The Defendantâ€ throughout the novel. One POV follows Pamela, who is the sole witness of â€The Defendantâ€ the night he broke into her Florida sorority house, brutally beat two of her sisters, and murdered two of other her sisters. The other POV follows Ruth, a previous victim of the same serial killer during his atrocities committed at Lake Sammamish in Washington. The stories intersect when a woman named Tina, who was a close friend of Ruth at the time of her murder, comes to Pamela, convinced their friends were murdered by the same man.

This book was a page-turner, even though I knew how this tragedy ultimately wrapped up, that didn’t take away from my interest in the book. My only complaint is that the names of some of the victims were changed, but the names of others were their actual names, which I found a bit confusing since there did not seem like any rhyme or reason for doing this. I think it should have remained consistent throughout with all of the names being changed since this is a fictional story based on true events.

I enjoyed seeing how the two main storylines intertwined, and although the timeline seemed jumpy at the beginning, it really ended up coming together in the end. It was haunting to read about how dismissive the police were to these women, which I know was the situation in real life for this case, but as I mentioned before, 'The Defendant' remaining nameless (even though it is clear what case this book is about) helped to reclaim these women's experiences and shed no more unwarranted light on the despicable man who did this. I appreciated how Knoll did not sensationalize the story but rather positioned the women and victims as heroes seeking justice, and as the title suggests, bright young women.

<![CDATA[All the Flowers Kneeling (Penguin Poets)]]> 58393241 A profound meditation on physical, emotional, and psychological transformation in the aftermath of imperial violence and interpersonal abuse, from a poet both "tender and unflinching" (Khadijah Queen)

Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection All the Flowers Kneeling investigates intergenerational trauma, sexual violence, and U.S. imperialism in order to radically alter our understanding of freedom, power, and control. In poems of desire, gender, bodies, legacies, and imagined futures, Tran's poems elucidate the complex and harrowing processes of reckoning and recovery, enhanced by innovative poetic forms that mirror the nonlinear emotional and psychological experiences of trauma survivors. At once grand and intimate, commanding and deeply vulnerable, All the Flowers Kneeling revels in rediscovering and reconfiguring the self, and ultimately becomes an essential testament to the human capacity for resilience, endurance, and love.]]>

90 Claire Keegan 0571379141 Emma Griffioen 5 "God help you, child," she whispers. "If you were mine, I'd never leave you in a house with strangers." pg. 18

Foster by Claire Keegan is a beautiful short story that evokes big emotions in such little pages. It takes place in rural Ireland, following a young child who is taken to live with distant relatives, not knowing if or when she will return home. She soon learns that there is a huge juxtaposition between her original home, where she and her many siblings starve due to an alcoholic father who leaves barely enough money to feed the family, and her new home, which is full of warmth and love.

"Ah, the women are nearly always rightm all the same," he says. "Do you know what the women have a gift for?"
"What?"
"Eventualies. A good woman can look far down the line and smell what is coming before a man even gets a sniff of it."
pg. 38

The writing and prose in this story is stunning. I was raw and emotional, without being aggressive and overbearing. The Irish countryside setting, with a hint of The Troubles, really served well to mirror the contrasting worlds the young girl was experiencing, one of conflict and one of closeness Foster really reminded me why literary fiction is my favorite genre, I really have not read enough of it this year!]]>

<![CDATA[Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1)]]> 63219094 Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.]]>

I don’t even know where to begin with this book. I binged the first 4 books in the Chestnut Spring series earlier this year, and have waited months for book #5, so to say I am disappointed is an understatement.

This book didn’t work for me because Bailey and Beau didn’t work for me at all. One of my main problems with them was the age gap. I’m sorry but no 35 has any business being with a 22 year old. If it had been a 13 year difference but Bailey was 25+ I would be like okay, but this whole thing just felt like a middle-aged man taking advantage of a young girl. And what made it worse was that they could not stop bringing up the age gap! It made Beau really gross to me. One quote from the book is literally Bailey thinking "There’s a sudden predatory vibe in the way he carries himself, in the way he moves." ??? That didn't help their case for me. My second problem was the fake engagement. It happened so fast and the reasons for doing it were dumb and unbelievable. If it had been to get her away and safe from her drug addict brothers, I could have been on board, but no. It was so she could be more respected in town to hopefully get a new job (which it didn’t help with at all), and so Beau could have a friend. But he is 35 and she is 22!!!

Both Bailey and Beau had no depth to them, individually, or in the relationship. Their flirting and banter were either non-existent, or cringy, and I felt no connection between them. They didn’t even do anything together besides talk about sex while skinny dipping in the dirty river, and talk to the local drunk Gary during Bailey’s shifts at the bar, while Beau drank tea. Bailey (who is a virgin by the way) had no personality, all she did was just randomly bring up sex anytime they were alone, which to me made her seem younger, and made the whole situation feel like infantilization. One thing I will give to Bailey is that she wanted to make enough money to move out of Chestnut Springs to be the first person in her family to go to university. But when she got into school all I could think about was her being a 22 year old in university with a 35 year old boyfriend. Beau suffers PTSD after serving in the Canadian military, yet we get basically no detail (other than he was missing for 8 days, maybe kidapped?) about what happened (he saved a friend or journalist, or something?) and why his feet are burnt (fire? bombs? who knows!). All we know is he wakes up at 2:11 am every night. Not to mention Beau should have been in therapy and should not have been using his 22 year old fake fiancé to “cure his PTSD. His PTSD was never explored in a meaningful way. He also kept saying he “claimed her and was constantly thinking about how Bailey was too young and how he shouldn’t be “doing this with her which was a constant reminder of the gross age gap. He quite literally thinks: "But all I can think about is Bailey. The girl I’m supposed to be helping, not playing games with. I saw her today. The way she looks at me. How easily she told me she trusts me. She shouldn’t. And I shouldn’t have taken as much trust as I did. Said the things I did." GROSS He was also obsessed with biting Bailey and his nickname for her was “sugar tits.

There were just so many weird scenes that I couldn’t look past. Toward the beginning of the book Beau mentions to Bailey that he drunk drives home from her bar every night and she’s literally just like hehehe ]]>

Throughout the book they fall in love through these letters, but Red feels suspicious that they are being watched, and the story unfolds from there.

The prose in this book was beautiful! I loved how unique the concept was, especially since I'm not usually a scifi fan. The whole time I was imagining the two sides of the time war to reflect our current world, the Garden representing the climate crisis, and the Agency representing technology and innovation. My only complaint is that I was confused for the first 100 or so pages during the "regular" parts of each chapter, but not during the letters. But the book is just shy of 200 pages so it felt like by the time I finally understood what was going on in the world, it was over. My friend Lauren (who also lent me this book thanks bestie) said when we were talking about this book, that it could have used a place/year at the beginning of each chapter so we knew where the characters were, and I couldn't agree more. Either that or I wish there had been some kind of blurb at the beginning of the book explaining the two sides of the time war, and what strands, braids, and shifts meant. But overall it was a beautiful love story, I highly recommend it to any scifi/time travel lovers!

Here are some of my favourite quotes:

"My memories of you spread through millennia, and each highlights you in motion." pg. 96

"They would make this war, she thinks, if there were not a war already made for them to make." pg. 98

"How I love to have no armor here." pg. 112

"She wants there to be a God, so she can curse her." pg. 169

"Word can wound - but they're bridges, too. Though maybe a bridge can also be a wound? To paraphrase a prophet: Letters are structures, not events. Yours give me a place to live inside." pg. 95]]>

Women & Power: A Manifesto 36525023 Women & Power, she traces the origins of this misogyny to its ancient roots, examining the pitfalls of gender and the ways that history has mistreated strong women since time immemorial. As far back as Homer’s Odyssey, Beard shows, women have been prohibited from leadership roles in civic life, public speech being defined as inherently male. From Medusa to Philomela (whose tongue was cut out), from Hillary Clinton to Elizabeth Warren (who was told to sit down), Beard draws illuminating parallels between our cultural assumptions about women’s relationship to power—and how powerful women provide a necessary example for all women who must resist being vacuumed into a male template. With personal reflections on her own online experiences with sexism, Beard asks: If women aren’t perceived to be within the structure of power, isn’t it power itself we need to redefine? And how many more centuries should we be expected to wait?]]> 115 Mary Beard 1631494759 Emma Griffioen 5 "Do words matter? Of course they do, because they underpin an idiom that acts to remove the authority, the force, even the humour from what women have to say." pg. 27

Women & Power by Mary Beard is a manifesto comprised of two of her lectures, The Public Voice of Women (2015) and Women in Power (2017). Both lectures explore and discuss the relationship between women, power, language, and influence, looking back as far as the ancient Greco-Roman times, and connecting to more recent examples such as the Clinton/Trump election in 2016.

"For a start it doesn't much matter what line you take as a woman, if you venture into traditional male territory, the abuse comes anyway. It is not what you say that prompts it, it's simply the fact that you're saying it." pg. 31

I really enjoyed Mary Beard's ability to pull from her expertise in Greco-Roman studies and historical examples of the gendered imbalance of power, while simultaneously pulling from personal experience as a female historian. One of the first examples of female silence Beard brings up is the put-down of Penelope in The Odyssey by Homer which she describes as, "the first recorded example of a man telling a woman to 'shut up'; telling her that her voice was not to be heard in public... a moment immortalized almost 3,000 years ago". This intrigued me as she connects it to a more modern example of women's silence, , both depicting continuously reinforced power structures, in their own modern way. These two examples to me, embody the author's message that without redefining the historically upheld idea of what power is in connection to women, strong and powerful women will continue to be silenced.

"We have to be more reflective about what power is, what it is for, and how it is measured. To put it another way, if women are not perceived to be fully within the structures of power, surely it is power that we need to redefine rather than women?" pg. 63

I would have loved to hear these lectures from Mary Beard live, and would highly recommend this manifesto as a starting point for anyone interested in gender studies, history, and classics. I do wish it was longer, however, in her afterword, Beard explains how she only did light updating when transitioning these lectures to print, and how ways to go about reconfiguring these notions of power still need to be further explored. However, Women & Power by Mary Beard was overall very accessible, while still drawing on insightful Greco-Roman examples that will reshape your perspective on the historical influence on our Western view of women and power.

"You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure. That means thinking about power differently." pg. 65

A Room with a View 253641 A Room With A View is one of E.M. Forster's earliest and most celebrated works.]]> 240 E.M. Forster Emma Griffioen 4 “The garden of Windy Corner was deserted except for a red book, which lay sunning itself upon the gravel path The sun rose higher on its journey, guided, not by Phaethon, but by Apollo, competent, unswerving, divine. Its rays fell on the ladies whenever they advanced towards the bedroom windows; on Mr. Beebe down at Summer Street as he smiled over a letter from Miss Catharine Alan; on George Emerson cleaning his father’s boots; and lastly, to complete the catalogue of memorable things, on the red book mentioned previously. The ladies move, Mr. Beebe moves, George moves, and movement may engender shadow. But this book lies motionless, to be caressed all the morning by the sun and to raise its covers slightly, as though acknowledging the caress. pg 166

A Room with a View by E.M. Forster is a historical comedy, coming-of-age story, following Lucy Honeychurch, as she visits Florence, Italy, accompanied by her spinster cousin, Charlotte Bartlett, who serves as her chaperone. Lucy is charming and witty, yet naive, set on having the ultimate tourist experience in Italy, including every tourist's dream, a room with a view. Throughout their time in Florence, Lucy interacts with various comical characters, one of whom is George Emerson, whom she ends up fainting in the arms of after witnessing a murder in a piazza during the trip. They are smitten with one another from that moment on, and they even share a kiss before she heads back to her home in Surrey, England. However, upon her return to England, Cecil Vyse, a snobby man from the same social class as Lucy, asks for her hand in marriage, and after having refused him multiple times before, she agrees. She is now faced with the decision to marry Cecil, a suitor who is socially respectable, yet does not see her, or any women, as a person of their own, or to follow her heart back to George, a socially unsuitable, but passionate lover.

“What is surprising, in fact, is how little tourism has changed over the past hundred years, once it made the leap from a privileged activity to a mass pursuit. Dean MacCannell, in his classic study of tourism, suggests a neat sociological evolution of travel: “What begins as the proper activity of the hero (Alexander the Great) develops into the goal of a socially organized group (the Crusaders), into the mark of status of an entire social class (the Grand Tour of the British â€gentlemanâ€), eventually becoming universal experience (the tourist)â€ pg 12

The topic of tourism is very common throughout the novel, as Lucy is of a higher social class where tourism was flourishing at the beginning of the 20th Century when this book takes place. This was really fun for me to read since I was traveling through Italy when I started reading this book. I really enjoyed reading and comparing the similarities of tourism then, to how it has continued to evolve today. The setting was beautiful, and enhanced by Forster’s descriptive and intriguing writing, he truly embodied the enchanting atmosphere of Tuscany within each descriptive paragraph of Lucy’s surroundings.

“It was pleasant to wake up in Florence, to open the eyes upon a bright bare room, with a floor of red tiles which look clean though they are not; with a painted ceiling whereon pink griffins and blue amorini sport in a forest of yellow violins and bassoons. It was pleasant, too, to fling wide the windows, pinching the fingers in unfamiliar fastenings, to lean out into sunshine with beautiful hills and trees and marble churches opposite, and close below, the Arno, gurgling against the embankment of the road. pg 38

Lucy Honeychuch was a great main character, her curiosity paired with her quick wit made her really enjoyable to read, especially in interacting with the dynamic cast of side characters. I have read some criticism of her being unable to think for herself, which is echoed in this quote, “This solitude oppressed her; she was accustomed to have her thoughts confirmed by others or, at all events, contradicted; it was too dreadful not to know whether she was thinking right or wrong. (pg 69), however, she is a young woman finding her way in the world. I personally think it would be unrealistic to assume she should be 100% sure of who she is and each one of her actions at such a young age because even nowadays that is not the case. It is a coming-of-age novel, and finding her voice, even with the help of others, throughout the story truly embodies that. Furthermore, she was incredibly relatable to me, especially in this quote after she witnessed the murder in a piazza in Florence, “The dreadful catastrophe of the previous day had given her an idea which she thought would work up into a book. (pg 70). Her character development was evident throughout the novel as well, with traveling opening her eyes to the differences in social class, and culture throughout the world, prompting her to make changes to her own life and way of thinking once she returned to England, which to this day is often the case for people if they are in the fortunate position to travel. However, I would argue that this is also accessible in a different way nowadays, through social media, where we are able to see, interact, and learn from people all over the world, and of different backgrounds and experiences. Visiting Italy also left Lucy with a little bit of a travel bug, which was oh-so relatable.

“Life, so far as she troubled to conceive it, was a circle of rich, pleasant people, with identical interests and identical foes. In this circle, one thought, married and died. Outside it were poverty and vulgarity for ever trying to enter, just as the London fog tries to enter the pine-woods pouring through the gaps in the northern hills. But, in Italy, where any one who chooses may warm himself in equality, as in the sun, this conception of life vanished. Her senses expanded; she felt that there was no one whom she might not get to like, that social barriers were irremovable, doubtless, but not particularly high. You jump over them just as you jump into a peasant’s olive-yard in the Apennines, and he is glad to see you. She returned with new eyes. pg 130

Overall, I really enjoyed A Room with a View by E.M. Forster. I don’t read classics often and sometimes find them hard to get into and through, so I was pleasantly surprised by how accessible this was while still feeling like a true classic with beautiful writing. I will be watching for sure, it is a bit old, but I am excited because Lucy Honeychurch is played by Helena Bonham Carter, and Charlotte Bartlett is played by Maggie Smith! I am also very intrigued to read more of Forster’s work, especially Maurice, which follows two men of differing social classes who fall in love. If you’re a fan of classics, social comedies, or British Literature, definitely add A Room with a View to your to-read list!]]>

Imogen, Obviously 61896624 New York Times bestseller Becky Albertalli explores the nuances of sexuality, identity, and friendship.

Imogen Scott may be hopelessly heterosexual, but she’s got the World’s Greatest Ally title locked down.

She's never missed a Pride Alliance meeting. She knows more about queer media discourse than her very queer little sister. She even has two queer best friends. There's Gretchen, a fellow high school senior, who helps keep Imogen's biases in check. And then there's Lili—newly out and newly thriving with a cool new squad of queer college friends.

Imogen's thrilled for Lili. Any ally would be. And now that she's finally visiting Lili on campus, she's bringing her ally A game. Any support Lili needs, Imogen's all in.

Even if that means bending the truth, just a little.

Like when Lili drops a tiny queer bombshell: she's told all her college friends that Imogen and Lili used to date. And none of them know that Imogen is a raging hetero—not even Lili’s best friend, Tessa.

Of course, the more time Imogen spends with chaotic, freckle-faced Tessa, the more she starts to wonder if her truth was ever all that straight to begin with. . .]]>

What an incredible introduction to Fredrick Backman! This heartfelt short story follows an elderly man, who is struggling with Alzheimer's, as his son, Ted, and grandson, Noah are learning to care for him. Written in the stream of consciousness format, the man revisits some of his memories, many of them filled with his late wife, whom he misses so much. It was both a heartwarming read about a grandfather and grandson relationship and a heartbreaking read about the struggle both the individual and family go through in cases of memory loss. The overall message of living each day to the fullest, and loving those who mean the most to you, is one I'll never get tired of being reminded of through literature. The Deal of a Lifetime 36297706 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and Beartown delivers an insightful and poignant holiday novella about a man who sacrificed his family in the single-minded pursuit of success and the courageous little girl fighting for her life who crosses his path.

It all begins with a father telling a story to his son on Christmas Eve. But this isn’t your typical Christmas story. The father admits to his son that he’s taken a life but he won’t say whose—not yet.

One week earlier, in a hospital late at night, the man met a five-year-old girl with cancer. She’s a smart kid—smart enough to know that she won’t beat cancer by drawing with crayons all day, but it seems to make the adults happy, so she keeps doing it.

As the man tells his son about this plucky little girl, he slowly reveals more about while he may be a successful businessman, idolized by the media and his peers, he knows he failed as a parent. Overwhelmed by the responsibility of fatherhood, he took the easy way out and left his wife and little boy twenty years ago to pursue professional success. Now he is left wondering if it’s too late to forge a relationship with his son, who seems to be his opposite in every way—prizing happiness over money, surrounded by loving friends in a cozy town where he feels right at home.

Face to face with the idea that something is missing, the man is given the unexpected chance to do something selfless that could change the destiny of the little girl in the hospital bed. But before he can make the deal of a lifetime, he needs to find out what his own life has actually been worth in the eyes of his son. And so, he seeks him out and tells him this story

Written with Fredrik Backman’s signature humor, compassion, and “knack for weaving tales that are believable and fanciful (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), The Deal of a Lifetime reminds us that life is a fleeting gift, and our only legacy is how we share that gift with those we love.]]>

The Deal of a Lifetime is an incredibly thought provoking short story a man dealing with cancer and is faced with an irreversible choice that makes him reflect on his life as a whole He does so by visiting his estranged son's bar on Christmas Eve, longing to make some kind of connection before it is too late. As someone who is estranged from their father, I had a tough time empathizing with the main character, however, I can appreciate the way in which this story explores life, death, and time. It is a provocative read with incredible writing, and really reminded me of A Christma Carol. I can't wait to read Backman's full length novels!

The only thing of value on Earth is time. One second will always be a second, there’s no negotiating with that. pg. 20

Yellowface 59357120
So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? This piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller. That is what June believes, and The New York Times bestseller list agrees.

But June cannot escape Athena’s shadow, and emerging evidence threatens her stolen success. As she races to protect her secret she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves.]]>
329 R.F. Kuang Emma Griffioen 5 Yellowface by RF Kuang was fast-paced, satirical, intriguing, and unique! I've never heard of or read a book with a similar concept, which I found so refreshing. June's internal monologue was absolutely insane, especially in the first half. I didn't even know how she could dig herself deeper into the hole, but she never failed to dig herself deeper and deeper. I was left with my jaw dropped at the end of multiple chapters.

I really enjoyed the insight into the publishing industry that Yellowface gave as well. One of the sentences that struck me the most was "Bestsellers are chosen. Nothing you do matters". I assumed this was often the case, however, it opened my eyes to how much ads and promotions for certain books impact the chance of me reading them.

Overall I had such a fun time buddy reading Yellowface with Sue! I've heard incredible things about RF Kuang for years, so I am very happy to finally have picked up one of her books. needless to say, I'll be reading her entire backlist!

Caught Up (Windy City, #3) 199333363
I’m a single dad and starting pitcher for Chicago’s MLB team.
I’m stretched too thin, but I don’t want help raising my son.

Each of his previous nannies only lasted a few weeks before I let them go.
Now, my coach is putting his foot down by hiring the one person I can’t fire—his daughter.

Miller Montgomery is the last woman I should fall for. Too wild, too young, and too unattached.

Chicago is just a quick stop for her. I thought I’d be counting down the days until she left, but summer feels too short when I start thinking about forever.

Miller

As a high-end pastry chef who recently won the most prestigious award in my industry, I’m desperate to prove I deserve it. But with a new title comes new pressure, and I can’t create a fresh and inspiring dessert to save my life.

With only two months to get back on track, I should be focusing in the kitchen, but instead, I let my dad talk me into using my time off to nanny for his star player’s kid.

Kai Rhodes forgot how to have fun, and I’m eager to jog his memory. But when he and his son start to feel like home, I have to remind us both that my time in Chicago ends with the summer.

Besides, I’ve always been a runner, and the last thing I want is to get caught.]]>

It was really fun to jump back into this world! Kai and Miller were cute together, although I do feel like they could have just talked about how they were feeling about one another later into the summer instead of pretending they didn't want to be together after Miller left, it could have solved a lot of problems. I did love Monty, and the Sunday night dinners with all of the characters from the first 2 books. And the end was super cute, which made me bump this up from 3 to 3.5 stars. Overall these are just quick and fun reads, but nothing groundbreaking, I would probably only recommend them to fans of sports romance. But don't get me wrong, I will be reading book 4!]]>

The Illiterate 61340211 The Illiterate is Ăgota KristĂłf’s memoir of her childhood, her escape from Hungary in 1956 with her husband and small child, her early years working in factories in Switzerland, and the writing of her first novel, The Notebook. Few writers can convey so much in so little space. Fierce yet almost pointedly flat and documentarian in tone, KristĂłf portrays with a disturbing level of detail and directness an implacable message of loss: first, she is forced to learn Russian as a child (with the Soviet takeover of Hungary, Russian became obligatory at school); next, at age 21, she finds herself required to learn French to survive: It is in this way that, at the age of twenty-one, when I arrive in Switzerland and when, completely by chance, I arrive in a city where French is spoken, I confront a language that is totally unknown to me. It is here that my battle to conquer this language begins, a long and arduous battle that will last my entire life. I have spoken French for more than thirty years, I have written in French for twenty years, but I still don’t know it. I don’t speak it without mistakes, and I can only write it with the help of dictionaries, which I frequently consult. It is for this reason that I also call the French language an enemy language. There is a further reason, the most serious of all: this language is killing my mother tongue.
Ěý]]>
68 Ăgota KristĂłf 0811234851 Emma Griffioen 5 "In Hungary I left my journal with its secret handwriting, and also my first poems. I left my brothers, my parents, without any warning, without saying farewell or goodbye. But above all, that day, that day at the end of November 1956, I lost forever my sense of belonging to a people." pg. 35

Simple, emotional, and honest, The Illiterate is Ăgota KristĂłf's memoir of her childhood, her escape from Hungary in 1956 during , her refuge in both Austria and Switzerland and her journey to becoming an author. Alongside chronicling her life, she explores the topic of language, literacy, and illiteracy, which was very interesting since she grew up as a big reader and writer, but was then thrown into an unfamiliar language at 21, not by her own choosing.

"I have spoken French for more than thirty years, I have written in French for twenty years, but I still don’t know it. I don’t speak it without mistakes, and I can only write it with the help of dictionaries, which I frequently consult. It is for this reason that I also call the French language an enemy language. There is a further reason, the most serious of all: this language is killing my mother tongue." pg. 28

The Illiterate was a really impactful read for me because my Great Grandparents, Nana and Great Aunt escaped from Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. They seemed refuge in Austria, same as the author and many other Hungarians at the time, and spent time in the Eisenstadt Refugee Camp run by the Red Cross before immigrating to Canada. Additionally, as I write this review I am in Budapest, and I visited the 1956 memorial outside of the Hungarian Parliament building, which was really moving. Ăgota KristĂłf actually attended a girls boarding school in Szombathely, Hungary before the Revolution, and that is the town my family is from, which I thought was an cool connection!

"How many victims did he have on his conscience? Nobody knows. In Romania, the deaths are still being counted; in Hungary, there were thirty thousand in 1956. What we will never be able to measure is the pernicious role the dictatorship exerted on the philosophy, art and literature of the countries of Eastern Europe. By imposing its ideology on these countries, the Soviet Union not only obstructed their economic development, it also tried to stifle their national culture and identity." pg. 31

I highly, highly recommend adding The Illiterate to your to-read list. It is a unique and touching read, highlighting a revolution that is not commonly known or talked about in the Western world. It is only 56 pages, but she is able to convey so many experiences and so much feeling in such a short memoir, it does not surprise me that so much of her work has been translated into English and many other languages over the years. I am really looking forward to reading her most notable work The Notebook in the future!

"What would my life have been like if I hadn’t left my country? More difficult, poorer, I think, but also less solitary, less torn. Happy, maybe." pg. 38

Mile High (Windy City, #1) 60909831
Chicago hockey isn't complete without me - everyone's favourite player to hate. I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night.

What I don't like is the new flight attendant on our team's private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I'll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she'll be begging to quit her job.

But every road trip blurs the lines, and I can't quite figure out if I keep pushing that flight attendant call button in order to push her buttons, or if it's more than that.

STEVIE

I've been a flight attendant for years. I thought I'd seen it all, but when my new job lands me onboard working for the most egotistical and self-righteous diva in the NHL, I start to second guess everything. Including the promise I made to myself of never hooking up with an athlete again . . . no matter how annoyingly tempting he may be.

Evan Zanders is unfiltered, unapologetic, and too attractive for his own good. He loves his image, but I hate everything about it.

Everything but him.]]>

i loved both stevie and zanders especially because it was duo pov! her being one of the teams flight attendants for the season was just too good, and i loved chicago as the main setting. i adored all of the side characters - i couldn't choose my favourite out of indy, logan, maddison, ryan, ella and rosie (lol) if i had to. there was also actual character growth and the growth wasn't just surface quick changes, you saw it develop throughout the book, which made the romance and book as a whole even better. stevie and zanders individual struggles with their parents were super relatable and i thought they dealt with it very well and maturely! the scenes toward the end with stevie and her dad, when he visited her, and zanders with his dad at the hometown bar, were both so sweet i was tearing up.

It's 600 pages, but it actually went by really quickly. the alternating pov chapters and their banter makes it so addicting to read, i was tearing through 200 pages at a time. i am so so so excited to read the right move - i was already loving her and ryan in this one! i also saw the third one comes out in october, has she said who's pov it is yet? let me know!]]>

Almond 52219386 This story is, in short, about a monster meeting another monster.Ěý

One of the monsters is me.

Yunjae was born with a brain condition called Alexithymia that makes it hard for him to feel emotions like fear or anger. He does not have friends—the two almond-shaped neurons located deep in his brain have seen to that—but his devoted mother and grandmother aren’t fazed by his condition. Their little home above his mother’s used bookstore is decorated with colorful post-it notes that remind him when to smile, when to say "thank you," and when to laugh. Yunjae grows up content, even happy, with his small family in this quiet, peaceful space.

Then on Christmas Eve—Yunjae’s sixteenth birthday—everything changes. A shocking act of random violence shatters his world, leaving him alone and on his own. Struggling to cope with his loss, Yunjae retreats into silent isolation, until troubled teenager Gon arrives at his school and begins to bully Yunjae.Ěý

Against all odds, tormentor and victim learn they have more in common than they realized. Gon is stumped by Yunjae’s impassive calm, while Yunjae thinks if he gets to know the hotheaded Gon, he might learn how to experience true feelings. Drawn by curiosity, the two strike up a surprising friendship. As Yunjae begins to open his life to new people—including a girl at school—something slowly changes inside him. And when Gon suddenly finds his life in danger, it is Yunjae who will step outside of every comfort zone he has created to perhaps become a most unlikely hero.Ěý

But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires her, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.

386 Jenna Evans Welch 1481432540 Emma Griffioen 4 "You know, people come to Italy for all sorts of reasons, but when they stay, it's for the same two things...love and gelato."

Love and Gelato is an adorable young adult romance following Lina after she moves to Italy to live with her Dad for the summer, shortly after her Mother’s passing. Her Mom never told her about her Dad, so with the help of one of her Mom’s journals from her own time in Italy, she pieces together her Mom and Dad’s love story from 17 years ago.

This book was adorable! The setting of the Tuscany countryside and Florence was so nice to read about especially because I’m in Tuscany right now! I really loved Lina and Ren’s friendship and although it was technically instalove, since the book takes place over only a week or so, it didn’t feel that way. I really would have enjoyed this series at 13/14, it really reminds me of the vibes of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' series by Jenny Han. I’m excited to see where their love story goes in the next two books.

irina might be the most unhinged character ive read about so far!! this girl was off her rocker, and it was so amusing to be in her head. you were always on the edge of your seat wanting to know what she'd do next, but then randomly she would have these moments where she was relatable or at least more understandable, which made the book hard to put down. i think the author did this on purpose to give the reader the same manipulative effect as she gave the other characters in the book.

i felt bad for flo, she was the collateral damage in all of irina's outbursts, and just in a roundabout friendship with her. her blog posts did make me laugh though, especially the fact that irina was reading them without her knowing ]]>

i am very happy with my decision to start my throne of glass journey with the assassin's blade! this was a fast-paced prequel, especially since it was broken down into 5 novellas. my favorites were the assassin and the pirate lord, the assassin and the desert and the assassin and the underworld. i really enjoyed the insight it gave me on celaena, arobynn, sam and all of the other characters who i'm sure will pop up throughout the rest of the series.

that ending had my eyes watering

The Risk (Mindf*ck, #1) 60545137 lose..until him.
Lana I didn't expect
him. I didn't want to fall in love. But I can't let him go. Logan
Bennett makes the world a safer place. He's brilliant. He's a
hero. He locks away the sick and depraved. But while he's
saving lives, I'm taking them. Collecting the debts that are
owed to me. Ten years ago, they took from me. They left
me for dead. They should have made sure I stayed dead.
Now I'm taking from them. One name at a time. I've trained
for too long. I've been patient. I can't stop now. Revenge is
best served cold… They never see me coming, until I paint
their walls red. Logan doesn't know how they hurt me. He
doesn't know about the screams they ignored. He doesn't
know how twisted that town really is. He just knows people
are dying. He doesn't know he's in love with their killer. No
one suspects a dead girl. And Logan doesn't suspect the
girl in his bed. They're looking for a monster. Not a girl who
loves red. Not a girl in love. I'm a faceless nightmare. At
least until I tell them the story they've pretended never
happened. But in the end, will Logan choose them? Or will
we watch them burn together? **Graphic **Adult language

All the Lies (Mindf*ck, #4) 60546023 inside their heads. It's a dangerous place to be, especially
when you start to empathize and lose your own sense of
morality. But that's never happened to me.
I've never felt conflicted on any case. Right is right and wrong is
wrong. It's simple. Black and white. There's no such thing
as a gray area. But fuck this case. I don't even know what
side I'm on anymore. I don't understand how this town can
continue to function without breaking under the weight of
all the lies they've spun and lived. Every time I find a
shard of truth, my gut twists, my heart beats faster, and I
hate this place a little more. Every time I think I've heard
the worst, another truth is dug up from the ashes of more
burning lies. Worst of all, I don't even know who to trust
anymore. My head is all messed up. I pride myself on
being imposible to fool. I'm an expert at knowing when
someone is lying to me. I never believed in being blinded
by love……until Lana.

<![CDATA[Falling Back in Love with Being Human: Letters to Lost Souls]]> 122353102
A transformative collection of intimate and lyrical love letters that offer a path toward compassion, forgiveness, and self-acceptance.

What happens when we imagine loving the people—and the parts of ourselves—that we do not believe are worthy of love?

Kai Cheng Thom grew up a Chinese Canadian transgender girl in a hostile world. As an activist, counselor, conflict mediator, and spiritual healer, she's always pursued the same deeply personal to embrace the revolutionary belief that every human being, no matter how hateful or horrible, is intrinsically sacred.

But then Kai Cheng found herself in a crisis of faith, overwhelmed by the violence with which people treated one another, and barely clinging to the values and dreams she'd built her life justice, hope, love, and healing. Rather than succumb to despair and cynicism, she gathered all her rage and grief and took one last leap of she wrote. She wrote letters that were prayers, or maybe poems, or perhaps magic spells. She wrote to the outcasts and runaways she calls her kin. She wrote to flawed but nonetheless lovable men, to people with good intentions who harm their own, to racists and transphobes seemingly beyond saving. What emerged was a blueprint for falling back in love with being human.]]>

falling back in love with being human: letters to lost souls, is a modern poetry collection of 'letters' addressed to various people, groups, things, etc., written by canadian writer kai cheng thom. the poems were well-written and easy to follow, which is not always the case with poetry. however, overall the poems fell flat for me, i wasn't highlighting much and there were so many pop culture references - although i did really enjoy the poem addressed to jk rowling!

if you're a fan of poetry, definitely check this out on or after august 1st when it is published, but if you're not, this is a good one to skip. i don't think this will be the most memorable poetry collection, however, i am really looking forward to picking up thom's memoir since i enjoyed the writing style so much!

Wendell is a ghost. A boy who lost his life much too young, his daily routine features ineffective death therapy, a sheet-dependent identity, and a dangerous need to seek purpose in the forbidden human world.

When their worlds collide, Marjorie is confronted by unexplainable disasters as Wendell transforms Glatt’s Laundry into his midnight playground, appearing as a mere sheet during the day. While Wendell attempts to create a new afterlife for himself, he unknowingly sabotages the life that Marjorie is struggling to maintain.

Sheets illustrates the determination of a young girl to fight, even when all parts of her world seem to be conspiring against her. Which is how they find themselves sharing the largest bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week in front of those who know you best?

400 Emily Henry 0593441273 Emma Griffioen 4 may 9th, 2023: i am so so so happy to report that i was not disappointed by happy place! as some of you probably know, beach read is one of my favourite romances, and i liked pwmov but was SO disappointed by book lovers, so i was not sure what to expect going into happy place.

harriet and wyn were adorable! i liked the chapters that showed different parts of their relationship, like when harry met wyns family, who reminded me a lot of my boyfriends wonderful family <3 the slow burn did KILL me though... omg i am not used to slow burns and i see now why i avoid them, i don't even know how many times i texted my friend alessia THEY NEED TO KISS... but it was a lot. although, with all the lead up of wyn texting so much on the trip and harry not knowing his reason for leaving, i was a bit underwhelmed with the situation when it was revealed. it was a very realistic reason and made sense, but i was expecting more.

i loved and related to a lot of the side characters, they each had very distinct personalities which made it easier to get to know and fall in love with them. i also really liked the variety of family/friend issues that each character or side character faced! i (unfortunately lol) really related to both harry and sabrina's situations with their families and also sabrina's struggle with wanting everything with the friend group to stay the same, and i thought they wrapped it up well in the end, definitely a vv good message to be hearing as someone in my 20s!

toward the end of the book when they were talking about knowing the next day was the last day but not talking about it because it's sad... that hit SO close to home with graduating a week and a half ago. thats REALLY what it felt like with my friends for the last few days so it had me tearing up!

overall i really enjoyed happy place! it is taking the number 2 spot in my emily henry book ranking (which is at the bottom of this review) and i have all hope restored for future eh books. im am still pissed that this one came out in hardcover though, like what was up with that??? im not paying $37 for a book AND having it not match the rest of the eh books i own... whoever made that decision JAIL FOR YOU!

random note (minor spoilers): i was convinced the whole time that it wasn't actually going to be sabrina and parth's wedding in the end and that the reason why wyn was texting so much was that it was going to be a surprise wedding for him and harriet and all their family was coming... lol. also i loved harrys pottery and stuff but i really wasn't expecting her to just quit her residency, i thought she was going to transfer to a montana hospital and finish her residency and then just not practice but whatever! i found it a bit redundant to have her and wyn do a career swap but i guess that goes along with the theme of finding your 'happy place', and clearly they both weren't happy with their original jobs.

may 9th, 2023: i am so so so happy to report that i was not disappointed by happy place! as some of you probably know, beach read is one of my favourite romances, and i liked pwmov but was SO disappointed by book lovers, so i was not sure what to expect going into happy place.

harriet and wyn were adorable! i liked the chapters that showed different parts of their relationship, like when harry met wyns family, who reminded me a lot of my boyfriends wonderful family <3 the slow burn did KILL me though... omg i am not used to slow burns and i see now why i avoid them, i don't even know how many times i texted my friend alessia THEY NEED TO KISS... but it was a lot. although, with all the lead up of wyn texting so much on the trip and harry not knowing his reason for leaving, i was a bit underwhelmed with the situation when it was revealed. it was a very realistic reason and made sense, but i was expecting more.

i loved and related to a lot of the side characters, they each had very distinct personalities which made it easier to get to know and fall in love with them. i also really liked the variety of family/friend issues that each character or side character faced! i (unfortunately lol) really related to both harry and sabrina's situations with their families and also sabrina's struggle with wanting everything with the friend group to stay the same, and i thought they wrapped it up well in the end, definitely a vv good message to be hearing as someone in my 20s!

toward the end of the book when they were talking about knowing the next day was the last day but not talking about it because it's sad... that hit SO close to home with graduating a week and a half ago. thats REALLY what it felt like with my friends for the last few days so it had me tearing up!

overall i really enjoyed happy place! it is taking the number 2 spot in my emily henry book ranking (which is at the bottom of this review) and i have all hope restored for future eh books. im am still pissed that this one came out in hardcover though, like what was up with that??? im not paying $37 for a book AND having it not match the rest of the eh books i own... whoever made that decision JAIL FOR YOU!

random note (minor spoilers): i was convinced the whole time that it wasn't actually going to be sabrina and parth's wedding in the end and that the reason why wyn was texting so much was that it was going to be a surprise wedding for him and harriet and all their family was coming... lol. also i loved harrys pottery and stuff but i really wasn't expecting her to just quit her residency, i thought she was going to transfer to a montana hospital and finish her residency and then just not practice but whatever! i found it a bit redundant to have her and wyn do a career swap but i guess that goes along with the theme of finding your 'happy place', and clearly they both weren't happy with their original jobs.

Fight Night 61104782 Women Talking, All My Puny Sorrows, and A Complicated Kindness returns with a funny, smart, headlong rush of a novel full of wit, flawless writing, and a tribute to perseverance and love in an unusual family.

Fight Night is told in the unforgettable voice of Swiv, a nine-year-old living in Toronto with her pregnant mother, who is raising Swiv while caring for her own elderly, frail, yet extraordinarily lively mother. When Swiv is expelled from school, Grandma takes on the role of teacher and gives her the task of writing to Swiv's absent father about life in the household during the last trimester of the pregnancy. In turn, Swiv gives Grandma an assignment: to write a letter to Gord, her unborn grandchild (and Swiv's soon-to-be brother or sister). You're a small thing, Grandma writes to Gord, and you must learn to fight.

As Swiv records her thoughts and observations, Fight Night unspools the pain, love, laughter, and above all, will to live a good life across three generations of women in a close-knit family. But it is Swiv's exasperating, wise and irrepressible Grandma who is at the heart of this novel: someone who knows intimately what it costs to survive in this world, yet has found a way--painfully, joyously, ferociously--to love and fight to the end, on her own terms.]]>
272 Miriam Toews 0735282412 Emma Griffioen 5 this was incredible! it was my first introduction to miriam toews, and i actually won a paperback copy in a goodreads giveaway, so thank you goodreads:)

fight night takes place in toronto, following (and narrated by) 9 year old Swiv, who lives with her mom (who is pregnant with gord) and grandma, who she helps take care of since being kicked out of school. it was incredibly witty, but also depicted living in a small house/apartment with a multigenerational family and childhood trauma as a whole, from the perspective of grandma, mom, and swiv.

the narration by and characterization of swiv was so good and effective. i felt like i was in her head, truly viewing her world from her perspective and she was so so funny. i love when characters feel real and she felt so real. especially when swiv was using words and phrases clearly learned from her grandma, i was laughing because she incorporated them into regular 9 year old language. i also annotated my book with pencil and was underlining so many of swiv's thoughts and adding LOL beside so many paragraphs.

i am very excited to read more miriam toews, especially women talking! this will also probably end up in my top books of 2023 which i love<3]]>

500 Holly Jackson 0593379853 Emma Griffioen 4 as good as dead was the perfect, suspenseful third book in the good girls guide to murder trilogy! i was on the edge of my seat right up until the epilogue!! holly jackson did an incredible job of giving us a new main plotline, while simultaneously tying it into the previous 2 books. i couldn't guess the next thing that happened to save my life... if you saw my updates while reading this you'd know i was STRESSED, it was absolutely insane.

i loved seeing even more of both pippa and ravi, im really going to miss reading about them and all the other fairview characters!! it was tough to read about the trauma pippa had, especially from the events at the end of the second book, but i liked how they actually showed what she was going through, rather than brushing over it as a lot of YA books do.

omg toward the end, THE HEADPHONES. i was screaming!!! and then the pip/ravi thing at the end... i was so sad until i saw that "Sarge" text message, thank god she included that, i would have rioted without closure.

overall, it was a great ending to the trilogy. i can't say enough good things about this series, it is suspenseful, fun, quick and just a really really good read. if you haven't already picked it up, add it to your tbr!

With the help of Ravi Singh, she released a true-crime podcast about the murder case they solved together last year. The podcast has gone viral, yet Pip insists her investigating days are behind her.

But she will have to break that promise when someone she knows goes missing. Jamie Reynolds has disappeared, on the very same night the town hosted a memorial for the sixth-year anniversary of the deaths of Andie Bell and Sal Singh.

The police won't do anything about it. And if they won't look for Jamie then Pip will, uncovering more of her town's dark secrets along the way... and this time everyone is listening. But will she find him before it's too late?]]>

All About Love: New Visions 218042 “The word “love is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb, writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, the renowned scholar, cultural critic, and feminist skewers our view of love as romance. In its place she offers a proactive new ethic for a people and a society bereft with lovelessness.

As bell hooks uses her incisive mind and razor-sharp pen to explore the question “What is love?, her answers strike at both the mind and heart. In thirteen concise chapters, hooks examines her own search for emotional connection and society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for the individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the 100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life. All About Love is a powerful affirmation of just how profoundly she can.

When Sara Foster runs away from home at sixteen, she leaves behind not only the losses that have shattered her world but the girl she once was, capable of trust and intimacy. Years later, in Los Angeles, she is a sought-after bartender, renowned as much for her brilliant cocktails as for the mystery that clings to her. Across the city, Emilie Dubois is in a holding pattern. In her seventh year and fifth major as an undergraduate, she yearns for the beauty and community her Creole grandparents cultivated but is unable to commit. On a whim, she takes a job arranging flowers at the glamorous restaurant Yerba Buena and embarks on an affair with the married owner.

When Sara catches sight of Emilie one morning at Yerba Buena, their connection is immediate. But the damage both women carry, and the choices they have made, pulls them apart again and again. When Sara's old life catches up to her, upending everything she thought she wanted just as Emilie has finally gained her own sense of purpose, they must decide if their love is more powerful than their pasts.

At once exquisite and expansive, astonishing in its humanity and heart, Yerba Buena is a love story for our time and a propulsive journey through the lives of two women finding their way in the world.]]>

i really enjoyed sara and emilies stories and perspectives. i do wish more of the story covered their time together rather than alternating between their two lives, but they kinda gave normal people vibes i wasnt sure how the story would end! this honestly could have used even 75 more pages for a bit more development, espeically with all of the tougher topics this book deals with, i think it would have benefited from being longer. i enjoyed colette and spencer, but there were so many other side characters that i also wish she would have developed more, or maybe there could have been less of them because i really couldn't keep them all straight, especially with the alternating chapters.

overall i enjoyed my time reading, and i loved how yerba buena was incorporated throughout the story, i want to try it now!]]>

What had happened to my beautiful boy? To our family? What did I do wrong? Those are the wrenching questions that haunted David Sheff’s journey through his son Nic’s addiction to drugs and tentative steps toward recovery. Before Nic became addicted to crystal meth, he was a charming boy, joyous and funny, a varsity athlete and honor student adored by his two younger siblings. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who lied, stole, and lived on the streets. David Sheff traces the first warning signs: the denial, the three a.m. phone calls—is it Nic? the police? the hospital? His preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself. But as a journalist, he instinctively researched every treatment that might save his son. And he refused to give up on Nic.]]>
