Zo Grey is reeling from the sudden death of her mother when she receives a surprising call from an attorney in Divinity, Louisiana, with the news she has been left an inheritance by a distant relative, the terms of which he will only discuss in person. Destitute and alone, with nothing left to lose, Zo heads to Divinity and discovers she is the sole beneficiary of a huge fortune and a monstrosity of a house that sits ominously at the peak of Watch Hill—but she must live in it, alone, for three years before the house, or the money, is hers.

Met with this irresistible opportunity to finally build a future for herself, Zo puts aside her misgivings about the foreboding Gothic mansion and the strange circumstances, and moves in, where she is quickly met by a red-eyed Stygian owl and an impossibly sexy Scottish groundskeeper.

Her new home is full of countless secrets and mystifying riddles, with doors that go nowhere, others that are impossible to open, and a turret into which there is no visible means of ingress. And the townspeople are odd

What Zo doesn’t yet know is that her own roots lie in this very house and that in order to discover her true identity and awaken her dormant powers, she will have to face off against sinister forces she doesn’t quite comprehend—or risk being consumed by them.]]>

A Gentleman in Moscow 216652963 Alternate cover editions for this ASIN can be found here, here, and here.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility, a novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel—a beautifully transporting novel.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.]]>

time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.]]>
326 Tahereh Mafi 0062085565 Jennifer 5 This review is also posted at

Filled with beautiful, hammering prose, Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi is The Book that is better than its predecessor. It is everything that was Shatter Me, and infinitely more. Without a doubt, Mafi’s writing is (still) some of the best I have ever read.

Unravel Me takes flight two weeks after the conclusion of Shatter Me, and overlaps a portion of Mafi’s novella, Destroy Me. The first thing I noticed was a bit of regression in Juliette: ultimately, she stops striking through her own thoughts in Shatter Me, as she grows more confident, and less confused. In Unravel Me, the strike-throughs are back, albeit, not at as much a frenetic pace as the prior novel. It still shows a sort of backstepping in Juliette that is confirmed in the pages, as she gets to know her new surroundings at Omega Point, a place she is most unfamiliar. She didn’t want to be used by The Reestablishment and Warner. Is she being used by the others at Omega Point? And even if she is, does she serve a good purpose? This internal struggle not the story or the scenes reminds me of Mockingjay, when Katniss thinks she might be a pawn by District 13, but wrestles with herself to be okay with it, because she will serve a greater purpose. I’m very interested in seeing how this plays out for Juliette.

The Love Triangle

Look, I’m Team Warner, I’ve always been Team Warner and you ain’t neva gonna change my mind! I’ve always said Warner is redeemable, that he wants to be something other than what he is. His vulnerability gets its own expose in Destroy Me, probably wooing me even further, if that’s at all possible, and Mafi carries this over into Unravel Me, when she brings him together with Juliette and of course the now famed #ChapterSixtyTwo. *wink*
Adam Kent is something of an anomaly to me in Unravel Me. There are secrets about him that are exposed, and they took me by surprise. Most of the time, I can see a plot twist coming from a mile away, Tahereh Mafi managed to sneak up behind me and whack me upside the head with the very book I had in my hands. Now I’m left with even more questions than answers! Why do you do this to me?! *cries*

Kenji

Kenji gets a real chance to shine in Unravel Me. He is a star in his own right, and he often makes demands of Juliette that most would think are unfair and heartless. But he cares for her a great deal. In fact, I wonder if the triangle is about to become a square, because sometimes I suspect he cares too much, and pines after Juliette himself, in his own, comical way. Kenji is many things in this story, but among them, the most important is an anchor. Forget his supersweet abilities, he is a foundation for people to rely on. Tahereh, do you think, maybe, possibly, we could get a spin-off about him if Juliette ends up with Warner or Adam? *wheedles* Oh, also maybe could you just make Juliette end up with Warner, pretty please?

The Supreme Commander finally shows up in Unravel Me (although he’s in Destroy Me as well), and this is something of a shock to citizens since part of his power is in his absence. We finally get to view Warner and his upbringing from his perspective, and boy, do that kick me right in the feels. The Supreme Commander is a unique personality, and I’m interested in finding out what makes him tick. Things things are revealed, that interesting dynamic between father and son, and my heart goes out to them.

One of the most interesting things though, are the titles about these books, and why I feel that Juliette and Warner are destined to be together. I think these titles reference Juliette’s effect on Warner, and they are the ultimate teaser to the ending of this series, because he makes references that harken back to the first title and well, frankly, the novella was all about him. I ł¦˛ą˛Ô’t wait to find out if they are destined to be together.

Spellbound (Spellbound, #1) 11358736 What's a girl to do when meeting The One means she's cursed to die a horrible death?

Life hasn't been easy on sixteen-year-old Emma Connor, so a new start in New York may be just the change she needs. But the posh Upper East Side prep school she has to attend? Not so much. Friendly faces are few and far between, except for one that she's irresistibly drawn to—Brendan Salinger, the guy with the rock-star good looks and the richest kid in school, who might just be her very own white knight.

But even when Brendan inexplicably turns cold, Emma can't stop staring. Ever since she laid eyes on him, strange things have been happening. Streetlamps go out wherever she walks, and Emma's been having the oddest dreams: visions of herself in past lives—visions that warn her to stay away from Brendan. Or else.

345 Cara Lynn Shultz 1459207777 Jennifer 3 It takes awhile to understand the paranormal element in Spellbound, but it certainly is unique. I won't spoil the book by detailing what it is, because much of Spellbound is wrapped up in that very specific thing, and including that in my review would probably ruin it for you.
But that is probably the only unique thing about Spellbound. Otherwise, it draws heavy comparisons to Twilight and Vampire Academy. I bet if I'd ever read Gossip Girl (or even watched the show), I'd be able to compare it to that, as well.

How It Compares To Twilight:
Emma leaves her home and school to live with another relative and start over. So does Bella.
Emma meets a tall, dark handsome classmate. So does Bella.
Emma is from a modest background. So is Bella.
Emma is humble. So is Bella

How It Compares To Vampire Academy:
Emma attends an elite, expensive private school. So does Rose.
Emma meets a tall, dark handsome guy. So does Rose.
Emma has to deal with malicious gossip from her classmates. So does Rose.
Emma is in a near-fatal car accident. So was Rose (alright, she technically died, but that is just a pesky detail).

I could continue on both tangents, but you get the picture. Overall, Spellbound is a solid book, and there are certainly interesting characters within its pages that I'd enjoy knowing more about. The paranormal element was fun to read about and learn, specifically the passages detailing the history. If you enjoy a paranormal romance (and hey! No love triangle in this one, folks!), you'll like Spellbound.

Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz is an interesting twist on yound-adult, paranormal romance. There is certainly something fun about a book that details reincarnation with an ugly, prophetic curse. Shultz does a good job investing you in her central character, Emma Connor, who has come to live with her Aunt after losing her twin brother, her mother and very nearly, her life. Her life starts over at Vincent Academy (Vince A for short), where she immediately makes friends and enemies.
It takes awhile to understand the paranormal element in Spellbound, but it certainly is unique. I won't spoil the book by detailing what it is, because much of Spellbound is wrapped up in that very specific thing, and including that in my review would probably ruin it for you.

Rebel Mechanics 24357092 320 Shanna Swendson 0374300178 Jennifer 3
Verity Newton as the main character was boring. ĚýSeriously, Swendson couldn't have chosen a more tedious character to narrate this novel, despite being a half-breed that can potentially cause conflict down the road. ĚýAnd while she wasn't unlikeable per se, she lacked that badass quality that every main character should have. ĚýShe was, for the most part, meek and unsure of herself, almost until the very end.

Lord Henry was delightful and enigmatic, with his bespectacled eyes and his nose shoved in books. ĚýBut his secret is given up early on in the novel and I would have liked to have seen it drawn out moreĚýfor the reader. ĚýHe is much more than an entomologist, and I wanted to know even more about him than we got.

Alec, one of the Mechanics, I never found trustworthy or worth Verity's schoolgirl crush. ĚýHe came offĚýas conceitedĚýand as if he disregarded all of Verity's feelings about their situation and how she might have been used by the rebels.

Likewise, Lizzie struck me as a little two-faced, despite knowing she did have benevolent intentions. ĚýShe simply justified her actions a little too much for me to like her.

I actually liked Flora and the children, despite Flora's vanity. ĚýShallow waters run deep, and all that. ĚýI'm looking forward to seeing where her character goes in the second book, and if she is also involved unbeknownst to the rest of the rebels, Henry and Verity. ĚýThe kids were genuine and inquisitive.

I sense a love triangle brewing. ĚýAlthough I usually don't feel one way or another regarding them, they still need to beĚýorganic. ĚýI have a feeling there will be romantic conflict in the second book and I'm not really looking forward to that. ĚýI hate when an author creates one where it's obvious that the main character should be with one character and not the other.

The plot was interesting: this is an alternate reality where the American colonists did not successfully overthrow the British control, and Red Coats still patrol NYC while the colony is under the thumb of the monarchy. ĚýIt begins quickly, with a robbery on Verity's train by masked bandits, which leads her straight into the hands of conflict, but she handles herself well. ĚýI'm kind of excited to see where Swendson takes it next.

Overall, not a terrible book, but it could be made better with improved characterization and less obvious plotlines. This book may have been provided in exchange for an honest review, and therefore will be noted on the .]]>

While not a bad book, because it was certainly entertaining, Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson was utterly predictable. ĚýI knew how it was going to end probably before the author did. ĚýSo let's talk about what made it tick - and what didn't.

<![CDATA[What Kills Me (What Kills Me, #1)]]> 15305194 323 Wynne Channing 0988105403 Jennifer 5 favorites This review is also posted on

What Kills Me is what every young adult/paranormal romance should be. Epic, fast-paced and not without a hot, non-sparkly vampire leading man guy to make you feel lusty. And thank god he’s not really a teenager, because this reader wanted him bad.

Axelia (Zee) is spending a couple of months in Rome on a study program, when she happens upon a beautiful stranger on her way home one evening or rather, he happens upon her. He beguiles her with his flirty, friendly Italian accent, and they become fast friends. You know that saying “keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Yeah, that. Or you might run from someone and fall down a well filled with blood and emerge a powerful vampire everyone believes is prophesied to doom the entire vampire race. Man, life sucks.

Wynne Channing has given the YA/PNR genres something really, really great. Yeah, you could ask yourself, “who isn’t writing something in this space? But I’ve been bored with a lot of them lately, so much so that I’ve deviated into other genres to get fresh content. Coming back with What Kills Me was like a punch in the gut! But in a very great way! Channing’s characters are incredibly witty and sarcastic…and still they maintain that level of realism that helps to keep a paranormal fiction book grounded somewhat in reality. I simply couldn’t put the book down, and resented things like sleeping when I absolutely had to.

Zee’s sarcasm and self-deprecating humor is everything Bella Swan should have been and never was. I’m a Twilight fan, but I’ll admit, it’s not written well and Bella is a dry and drab character until she’s turned in the second half of Breaking Dawn. Zee is interesting before she’s changed and she’s even more interesting after. She looks life (and Death, ha!) right in the face and smirks at her own circumstances, all the while worrying about decorum and bugs. I really liked her.

Lucas.oh Lucas. You make my heart go pitter-pat. Lucas, the bladesmith tasked to help Zee, is every woman’s fantasy in a leading man: mysterious, quick-witted, and occasionally tender. Swoon. I have nothing against sparkling vampires, and this certainly isn’t a comparison review to Twilight, but Lucas was dark and dangerous and he was still funny. He didn’t take himself so seriously that he’d, you know, leave his girl in the middle of the woods because he’s too dangerous. The two of them together are simply delicious; you know they want to, but will they? Oh pride, it really gets in the way sometimes.

She doesn’t ignore any secondary characters…oh no. They all get their few minutes of fame, and they are as put together as Zee and Lucas, lending a stronger hand to the overall story.

The plot is action-packed and takes the characters from Rome to Thailand to the remote mountains of Asia. I loved traveling with the characters, not knowing where Channing would take us next! There are friends and foes, blood and murder, knives in backs (literally and figuratively). Throughout it all, the plot weaves tightly and thickly, wrapping around the reader and sucking you in (at least this reader). I was fascinated with the method in which Zee was “reborn and the contents of the well because while vampires still turn humans the usual way, Zee’s circumstances are so unusual, it makes the rest of the story that much more. It is the story.

It felt impossible to put down and I ł¦˛ą˛Ô’t wait for the next one. Wynne Channing, you ł¦˛ą˛Ô’t write the sequel fast enough. Thank you for giving us such a fabulous story.

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Without Merit 33280872 Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.]]>

Quinn and Graham’s perfect love is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair.

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. This is a heartbreaking page-turner that asks: Can a resounding love with a perfect beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?]]>

The Wedding People 198902277 Alternate cover edition of ISBN 9781250899576.

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women ł¦˛ą˛Ô’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.]]>

<![CDATA[Marketing Made Simple: A Step-By-Step Storybrand Guide for Any Business]]> 49121574 Based on Building a StoryBrand by New York Times bestselling author Donald Miller, this checklist is a strategic and actionable guide to applying the StoryBrand framework to any brand and an essential part of any marketing professional's tool kit.

Every day, brands lose millions of dollars simply because they do not have a clear message that tells consumers who they are and what value they will add to their customers' lives. To solve this dilemma, Donald Miller wrote Building a StoryBrand, which has become the quintessential guide for anyone looking to craft or strengthen their brand's message.

Now, Don is taking it a step further with this five-part checklist that helps marketing professionals and business owners apply the StoryBrand messaging framework across key customer touchpoints to effectively develop, strengthen, and communicate their brand's story to the marketplace.

Praise for Marketing Made Simple

"I created collateral for a client and they recently told me not to release the next round we created because they can't handle the influx of customers from the first round. They had more listings this year than in 30 years of business." - Amy Burgess, Marketing Consultant

"My last email campaign I delivered raised $20k. Thank you Donald Miller for giving me a system that I know works." - Ian Stewart, Owner/Creative Director of Root Source Digital

"A client went from $15MM last year to $27MM so far this year. All from updating their messaging and implementing new lead generators and email campaigns.- Wes Gay, CEO Wayfinder

"Just heard from one of my clients that she's getting 18 ideal client leads a day from her website. Before we redid her wireframe, she averaged around 1-3 leads a week. And that's just with updating her website." - Amy Schutte, Owner of Hudson and Co LLC]]>

She's whisked away to star in a reality show—in Hollywood, on live TV. But she doesn’t know who to trust. Because everybody on the show wants to win.

And nobody is there to make friends.

The Boyfriend App author Katie Sise spins another irresistible tale of technology, secrets, and big-time romance in this story of what it takes to be #trulybeautiful.]]>

ĚýI had no idea it was going to be book one in a series of companion novels, so when I saw The Pretty App, I knew I definitely wanted to read it.

Unfortunately, I was a littleĚýdisappointed in the story. ĚýThere were parts that I thought were just hysterical, and others that had me questioning why I was reading it in the first place.
Here are some things that bothered me

Blake was painted as a pretty heinous character in , and I liked hating her. ĚýShe was such a bitch! ĚýSo I just didn't buy into her 180-degree about-face to be a better person. ĚýPeople don't change that much that quickly!
I was never invested in the Blake/Leo romance. ĚýHere's this seemingly nice guy who is also brilliant and even though Blake was kind of a snarky bitch, he still liked her anyway. ĚýTHIS DOES NOT HAPPEN.
The reality show portion just didn't feel believable. ĚýIt read like Sise wanted to get from point A to point C, without giving B any real meat in the story. ĚýQuick! ĚýLet's get through this reality show so we can get to a HEA! ĚýSo much time was spent on the build-up to it, and not enough time on the actual event.
I never connected with the friendship Blake and Audrey sort of maybe rekindled.
All of a sudden, all the trogs are rooting for her, after she treated them like complete shit? ĚýTHIS ALSO DOES NOT HAPPEN.
The ending was too clean for all the shitty things Blake had done. ĚýWhat happened to karma?!
It was sadly predictable. ĚýI knew what was going toĚýhappen almost from the beginning.
[spoilers removed]

Things I liked

While Blake was pretty superficial, Sise showed that she had more depth to her than we originally thought. ĚýBeing in her head with her insecurities was enlightening and made me sympathize with her a little.
The hot guy was also smart. ĚýThat's always a nice bonus.
She was incredibly vain, and not at all ashamed of that. ĚýYou would think that would be a trait I didn't like, but damn if she wasn't honest about herself!
The caricature of Justin Bieber in Danny Beaton was in one word....HYSTERICAL. ĚýThe personality was everything I beliebeĚýBieber would be like in person.
It pokes fun at the ridiculousness of social media with the reality show, the PublicParty app, etc.
The story arc with her sister Samantha was very sweet, and I enjoyed seeing the come back together as siblings.
Blake had some snarky inner-dailogue that made me laugh:

"I could've listed a lot of things I wanted: Ěýfor my dad to love me unconditionally, for Leo to show up at the baggage claim and say he couldn't live a Blake-free life, for my ass to always stay this high."

"She was the kind of girl who could make farts sexy. ĚýOr the name Delores."

"The next afternoon we were all sitting in an upperclassman seminar called College Prep, which was supposedly meant to motivate the juniors and prepare the seniors. ĚýBut it was mostly about study habits and not about stuff we really needed to know, like how to date two guys at once without looking like a ho."

"As much as I loved the cameras, they made certain things really hard, like adjusting your underwear, yawning, getting something out of your teeth, or - God forbid - farting."

Verdict
Overall, The Pretty App is like a tech-crazed Mean Girls, with a reality show spin, while poking fun at some of our sexist traditions. ĚýIt wasn't terrible but I had a hard time really getting into it. ĚýI think younger audiences will like it (but probably miss some of the satire).]]>

The Host was FANTASTIC. The first 10 chapters or so were pretty abysmal...but once you get past that and to the part where Melanie and Wanda are found by Mel's uncle, it picks up swiftly and makes you forget how lousy the first 10 chapters were. Meyer fleshed out her characters so well, it left you wondering how and where they end up after the book is complete.

<![CDATA[Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1)]]> 63219094 Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.]]>

<![CDATA[The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession]]> 62873378 One of the most remarkable true-crime narratives of the twenty-first the story of the world’s most prolific art thief, Stéphane Breitwieser.

In this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, the best-selling author of The Stranger in the Woods brings us into Breitwieser’s strange world—unlike most thieves, he never stole for money, keeping all his treasures in a single room where he could admire them.

For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

In The Art Thief, Michael Finkel brings us into Breitwieser’s strange and fascinating world. Unlike most thieves, Breitwieser never stole for money. Instead, he displayed all his treasures in a pair of secret rooms where he could admire them to his heart’s content. Possessed of a remarkable athleticism and an innate ability to circumvent practically any security system, Breitwieser managed to pull off a breathtaking number of audacious thefts. Yet these strange talents bred a growing disregard for risk and an addict’s need to score, leading Breitwieser to ignore his girlfriend’s pleas to stop—until one final act of hubris brought everything crashing down.

This is a riveting story of art, crime, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost.]]>

The Woman in Me 74894304 The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.

In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.]]>

Listen, you are not reading her book for literary perfection. Maybe you are reading it for entertainment or to hear her version. Probably both, if we're being honest.
This isn't a work of fiction. And she would be doing a disservice to all of us–and herself–if she had a ghost writer or allowed heavy editing. After finishing her book, I understand even more why she was determined to write this in her own words, with her own timeline. Because these are HER terms, not ours. Not Simon & Schusters. Not her fans. Especially not her family, who spent decades living off of her success, and forcing her to be their money puppet for 13 of those years.
For these reasons, I think it is really important that her story is told her way, because she was controlled for so long. She finally has a voice and she is using it.

Is this a great book? No, of course not. Nothing about her story is great, except that she finally found the courage to push her way out. SHE is great. Her story is sad. She had the entire world at her finger tips with zero support at times she needed it the most.

I hope she spends the rest of her life making up for lost time.

I'll update this review when I have more time to reflect on it.]]>

Apples Never Fall 56894456 #1 New York Times Bestseller
A Peacock Original TV Series–Streaming Soon

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Liane Moriarty comes a novel that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest

The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . .

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.]]>

Colleen Hoover tells fan favorite Atlas’s side of the story and shares what comes next in this long-anticipated sequel to the “glorious and touching (USA TODAY) #1 New York Times bestseller It Ends with Us.

Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date.

But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.

Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding (Sarah Pekkanen, author of Perfect Neighbors) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).]]>

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. The American Heiress 11072889 "Anyone suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal symptoms (who isn't?) will find an instant tonic in Daisy Goodwin’s The American Heiress. The story of Cora Cash, an American heiress in the 1890s who bags an English duke, this is a deliciously evocative first novel that lingers in the mind." --Allison Pearson, New York Times bestselling author of I Don’t Know How She Does It and I Think I Love You

Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the twentieth century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts, suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals. Money, Cora soon learns, cannot buy everything, as she must decide what is truly worth the price in her life and her marriage.

Witty, moving, and brilliantly entertaining, Cora’s story marks the debut of a glorious storyteller who brings a fresh new spirit to the world of Edith Wharton and Henry James.

"For daughters of the new American billionaires of the 19th century, it was the ultimate marriage to a cash-strapped British Aristocrat in return for a title and social status. But money didn’t always buy them happiness." --Daisy Goodwin in The Daily Mail

Seventeen Wishes 34741881 If knowing the truth could leave you more broken than believing the lies, would you still want to know it?

We’ve been friends our entire lives, Lilly and me.
But I have not always being truthful.

There are lies we tell ourselves so we can hold on to hope.
And lies we tell those we love to save them the pain.

There are truths that are too big and too final.
And truths that give us a reason to keep going.

This is where I live. Between the lies and the truths.
Between hope and finality.

This is the place I’ve created for us.
For Lilly and me.

A place without expiration dates.
A place where I can be me and where the promise of tomorrow exists, even if it’s a lie, I tell myself.

Our time is limited, so I’ll make the most of it and hope she’ll forgive me for the lies I told us both.

<![CDATA[Shadow Spell (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy, #2)]]> 18889963 From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love

With the legends and lore of Ireland running through his blood, falconer Connor O’Dwyer is proud to call County Mayo home. It’s where his sister, Branna, lives and works, where his cousin, Iona, has found true love, and where his childhood friends form a circle that ł¦˛ą˛Ô’t be brokenâ€

A circle that is about to be stretched out of shape—by a long-awaited kiss.

Meara Quinn is Branna’s best friend, a sister in all but blood. Her and Connor’s paths cross almost daily, as Connor takes tourists on hawk walks and Meara guides them on horseback across the lush countryside. She has the eyes of a gypsy and the body of a goddess…things Connor has always taken for granted—until his brush with death propels them into a quick, hot tangle.

Plenty of women have found their way to Connor’s bed, but none to his heart until now. Frustratingly, Meara is okay with just the heat, afraid to lose herself—and their friendship—to something more. But soon, Connor will see the full force and fury of what runs in his blood. And he will need his family and friends around him when his past rolls in like the fog, threatening an end to all he loves…]]>

Where the Crawdads Sing 42421761
But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens.

In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery. Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group. The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures.]]>

Owens spends a lot of time world-building, so that you feel as if you are walking through the marsh with Kya. And as a reader, being brought into Kya's solitary world is almost like being entrusted with a secret, something between you and the Marsh Girl. It is absolutely amazing she survived abandonment at such a young age, but as she proves, nature perseveres.

I'm a bit unsatisfied with the ending which is spoilery so don't click this next part if you are not done reading it. [spoilers removed]

Now all that aside, if you told me this was based on a real story, I'd believe you because the writing is so immersive and beautiful. Is Owens a marsh expert? I don't know, but her character is some kind of prodigy and she was so vivid as to step right out of the pages and lead you through her marsh. You are captivated by her, like every single townsperson, you feel for her because how can anyone survive such hardships, and you want justice for her.

I'm giving this 4 stars only because it took me awhile to get into (and that ending), but this is a book I would recommend to everyone. I hope this gets made into a movie.]]>

<![CDATA[The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music]]> 57648017
Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do 4 hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I've recorded and can't wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This certainly doesn't mean that I'm quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it's like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters…the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.]]>

Alizeh, the heir to the Jinn throne, is destined to free her people from the half-lives they’ve been forced to live under human rule. When Kamran, the heir to the human throne, falls in love with her, he’s forced to question everything he’s been taught about Jinn.

Kamran’s grandfather lays dead at the hand of Cyrus, ruler of the neighboring kingdom of Tulan. Cyrus has stolen Alizeh away to his homeland and plans to marry her there, giving her everything she needs to become the Jinn queen—and when she assumes the throne he will have fulfilled his own bargain with the devil.

Alizeh wants nothing to do with Cyrus’s deal or the devil. But without a way to escape Tulan, and with the fulfillment of her own destiny tantalizingly close, she’ll have to decide whether she can set aside her emotions to become the queen her people need.

Kamran, meanwhile, is picking up the pieces in Ardunia. Facing betrayal at every turn, all he knows is that he must go to Tulan to avenge his grandfather. He can only hope that Alizeh will be waiting for him there—and that she hasn’t yet become the queen of Tulan.

Full of explosive magic, searing romance, and heartbreaking betrayal, this breathtaking sequel to This Woven Kingdom is from the award-winning and bestselling author of the Shatter Me series and is perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Sabaa Tahir, and Tomi Adeyemi.]]>

<![CDATA[A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe]]> 60784591
It is a moment shrouded in horror and mystery. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849, at just forty, in a painful, utterly bizarre manner that would not have been out of place in one of his own tales of terror. What was the cause of his untimely death, and what happened to him during the three missing days before he was found, delirious and “in great distress on the streets of Baltimore, wearing ill-fitting clothes that were not his own?

Mystery and horror. Poe, who remains one of the most iconic of American writers, died under haunting circumstances that reflect the two literary genres he took to new heights. Over the years, there has been a staggering amount of speculation about the cause of death, from rabies and syphilis to suicide, alcoholism, and even murder. But many of these theories are formed on the basis of the caricature we have come to associate with the gloomy-eyed grandfather of Goth, hunched over a writing desk with a raven perched on one shoulder, drunkenly scribbling his chilling masterpieces. By debunking the myths of how he lived, we come closer to understanding the real Poe―and uncovering the truth behind his mysterious death, as a new theory emerges that could prove the cause of Poe’s death was haunting him all his life.

In a compelling dual-timeline narrative alternating between Poe’s increasingly desperate last months and his brief but impactful life, Mark Dawidziak sheds new light on the enigmatic master of macabre.]]>

Spare 62296528
For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.]]>

The Ferryman 61282437 New York Times bestselling author of The Passage comes a riveting standalone novel about a group of survivors on a hidden island utopia--where the truth isn't what it seems.

Founded by a mysterious genius, the archipelago of Prospera lies hidden from the horrors of a deteriorating outside world. In this island paradise, Prospera's lucky citizens enjoy long, fulfilling lives until the monitors embedded in their forearms, meant to measure their physical health and psychological well-being, fall below 10 percent. Then they retire themselves, embarking on a ferry ride to the island known as the Nursery, where their failing bodies are renewed, their memories are wiped clean, and they are readied to restart life afresh.

Proctor Bennett, of the Department of Social Contracts, has a satisfying career as a ferryman, gently shepherding people through the retirement process--and, when necessary, enforcing it. But all is not well with Proctor. For one thing, he's been dreaming--which is supposed to be impossible in Prospera. For another, his monitor percentage has begun to drop alarmingly fast. And then comes the day he is summoned to retire his own father, who gives him a disturbing and cryptic message before being wrestled onto the ferry.

Meanwhile, something is stirring. The Support Staff, ordinary men and women who provide the labor to keep Prospera running, have begun to question their place in the social order. Unrest is building, and there are rumors spreading of a resistance group--known as "Arrivalists"--who may be fomenting revolution.

Soon Proctor finds himself questioning everything he once believed, entangled with a much bigger cause than he realized--and on a desperate mission to uncover the truth.]]>

The Late Americans 62092265
In the shared and private spaces of Iowa City, a loose circle of lovers and friends encounter, confront, and provoke one another in a volatile year of self-discovery. At the group’s center are Ivan, a dancer turned aspiring banker who dabbles in amateur pornography; Fatima, whose independence and work ethic complicates her relationships with friends and a trusted mentor; and Noah, who “didn’t seek sex out so much as it came up to him like an anxious dog in need of affection. These three are buffeted by a cast of poets, artists, landlords, meat-packing workers, and mathematicians who populate the cafes, classrooms, and food-service kitchens of Iowa City, sometimes to violent and electrifying consequence. Finally, as each prepares for an uncertain future, the group heads to a cabin to bid goodbye to their former lives—a moment of reckoning that leaves each of them irrevocably altered.]]>

Breen Siobhan Kelly grew up in the world of Man and was once unaware of her true nature. Now she is in Talamh, trying to heal after a terrible battle and heartbreaking losses. Her grandfather, the dark god Odran, has been defeated in his attempt to rule over Talamh, and over Breen—for now.

And soon, united with him and with all of Talamh, she will seek out those in desperate need of rescue, and confront the darkness with every weapon she her sword, her magicks—and her courage...]]>

<![CDATA[Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing]]> 59641216
So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who traveled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us. . . and so much more.

In an extraordinary story that only he could tell—and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it—Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he’s found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humor, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is an unforgettable memoir that is both intimate and eye-opening—as well as a hand extended to anyone struggling with sobriety. Unflinchingly honest, moving, and uproariously funny, this is the book fans have been waiting for.]]>

<![CDATA[Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty]]> 56382342
When eleven-year-old Cornelius Vanderbilt began to work on his father’s small boat ferrying supplies in New York Harbor at the beginning of the nineteenth century, no one could have imagined that one day he would, through ruthlessness, cunning, and a pathological desire for money, build two empires—one in shipping and another in railroads—that would make him the richest man in America. His staggering fortune was fought over by his heirs after his death in 1877, sowing familial discord that would never fully heal. Though his son Billy doubled the money left by “the Commodore, subsequent generations competed to find new and ever more extraordinary ways of spending it. By 2018, when the last Vanderbilt was forced out of The Breakers—the seventy-room summer estate in Newport, Rhode Island, that Cornelius’s grandson and namesake had built—the family would have been unrecognizable to the tycoon who started it all.

Now, the Commodore’s great-great-great-grandson Anderson Cooper, joins with historian Katherine Howe to explore the story of his legendary family and their outsized influence. Cooper and Howe breathe life into the ancestors who built the family’s empire, basked in the Commodore’s wealth, hosted lavish galas, and became synonymous with unfettered American capitalism and high society. Moving from the hardscrabble wharves of old Manhattan to the lavish drawing rooms of Gilded Age Fifth Avenue, from the ornate summer palaces of Newport to the courts of Europe, and all the way to modern-day New York, Cooper and Howe wryly recount the triumphs and tragedies of an American dynasty unlike any other.

Written with a unique insider’s viewpoint, this is a rollicking, quintessentially American history as remarkable as the family it so vividly captures.]]>

The Gifts of Imperfection 52578859 In hardcover for the first time, this tenth-anniversary edition of the game-changing #1 New York Times bestseller features a new foreword and brand-new tools to make the work your own.

For over a decade, Brené Brown has found a special place in our hearts as a gifted mapmaker and a fellow traveler. She is both a social scientist and a kitchen-table friend whom you can always count on to tell the truth, make you laugh, and, on occasion, cry with you. And what's now become a movement all started with The Gifts of Imperfection, which has sold more than two million copies in thirty-five different languages across the globe.

What transforms this book from words on a page to effective daily practices are the ten guideposts to wholehearted living. The guideposts not only help us understand the practices that will allow us to change our lives and families, they also walk us through the unattainable and sabotaging expectations that get in the way.

Brené writes, "This book is an invitation to join a wholehearted revolution. A small, quiet, grassroots movement that starts with each of us saying, 'My story matters because I matter.' Revolution might sound a little dramatic, but in this world, choosing authenticity and worthiness is an absolute act of resistance."]]>

This was just okay for me. I can see how people really love Brene Brown but this book (my first of hers) did not particularly resonate with me. I'm still trying to discover why, as it came highly recommended by a friend with tastes similar to my own.

The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman.

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape.

One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...
