I absolutely loved this one minus the ending. I'm not sure if the way the ending was written was necessary to the story or if it seemed too neatly tied up. I appreciate when authors tie up loose ends, but was this done too neatly? It was basically 30 pages of tying up loose ends with no substantial other plot going on. I wonder if it could have been done shorter? I'd love to hear other people's opinions on the ending.

I'm not entirely sure why Clanton needed Musser, but ok. It looks like a Clanton work, so maybe Musser wrote it? It's an interactive story about making a rainbow. I thought it would be more cohesive and science-y, like they'd make the cloud cry but then show the sun and then show how it all makes a rainbow, but it wasn't like that; it was more like an interactive story about drawing rainbows and failing and trying again.

I think the "When to Mimi's house we go" line sounds really awkward. I don't know why they didn't go with "Off to Mimi's house we go." The rhymes are mostly okay. I think it's confusing that they take just about every mode of transportation to Mimi's house. At first I was like ok, they take a plane and then a train and then a ... wait a minute. I don't know; it was weird.

<![CDATA[Life After Whale: The Amazing Ecosystem of a Whale Fall]]> 62952901
All living things must one day die, and Earth’s largest creature, the majestic blue whale, is no exception. But in nature, death is never a true ending. When this whale closes her eyes for the last time in her 90-year life, a process known as whale fall is just beginning. Her body will float to the surface, then slowly sink through the deep; from inflated behemoth to clean-picked skeleton, it will offer food and shelter at each stage to a vast diversity of organisms, over the course of a century and beyond.

Caldecott Medalist Jason Chin’s astonishing artwork enriches and amplifies engaging, well-researched text by Bill Nye the Science Guy writer Lynn Brunelle. Young lovers of the macabre will relish each page of Life After Whale. Meanwhile, those grappling with the hard subject of death will take solace in this honest look at the circle of life, which closes on a young whale enjoying the same waves as her ancestor. Additional back pages offer further info and reading recommendations on whales, whale falls, and ecosystems.]]>

All the Rocks We Love 199927706
Children love rocks. Rocks appear in jacket pockets, on windowsills, in the car, in their hiding places, and most often, in their little grips. Rocks are universal they can be found in all climates, countries, and communities making themselves available to anyone who craves the tactile pleasure of holding a perfectly sized, unfragile, unowned object. They can be collected, compared, stacked, plunked into water, painted, and shared. This book is an appreciation of their versatility and appeal, paired with the presentation of real types of rocks and their play-worthy attributes. The backmatter provides just enough extra information about each of the rocks included in the book. Written by a children’s author and psychotherapist, in partnership with her geologist husband, and illustrated with both warmth and accuracy, this nonfiction ode to rocks will speak to all little hands and hearts.]]>

This book makes more sense if you actually know who James Earl Jones is. Otherwise it's like, ok, a boy with a stutter, what's important about that. So I don't know if they should have given some back matter in the story, or if it's enough for a kid to read it not knowing who he is and then find out, oh, this is Darth Vader, wow.

Erno Rubik and His Magic Cube 196849292
In 2023, the world record for solving the Rubik’s Cube was broken by Max Park, who finished in 3.13 seconds!

And then there’s you. Did you ever get so frustrated with a Rubik’s Cube that you wanted to pull it apart and put it back together in order? Were you to do so, you’d see how cleverly one of the world’s most popular toys is assembled. Working together, the 26 pieces combine to make 43 quintillion possible configurations—but only one solution.

A solitary child, Erno Rubik grew up in post-World War II Hungary obsessed with puzzles, art, nature, and the underlying patterns and structures. He became a professor of art, architecture, and design, who was still fascinated with how objects work together, sometimes becoming greater than their components. In a quest to help his students understand three-dimensional objects and how they move—not to mention a desire to entertain himself—he fashioned a cube whose pieces twisted and turned without breaking, and unexpectedly invented the Rubik's Cube, the most popular puzzle in history, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024.]]>

This was an interesting book. I love the angle it took, showing Rubik's interest in blocks and puzzles and shapes and cubes. My only question comes from the backmatter - it says out of the 43 quintillion ways to start a Rubik Cube, it would take you at least 20 moves to solve it. But sometimes you're one move away from solving it. So couldn't you start it just one move away, too? I don't quite understand that part.

Not Nothing 207294337 "The book we all need at the time we all need it. —Katherine Applegate, Newbery Award–winning author of The One and Only Ivan In this middle grade novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Gayle Forman, a boy who has been assigned to spend his summer volunteering at a senior living facility learns unexpected lessons that change the trajectory of his life.To say Alex has had it rough is an understatement. His father’s gone, his mother is struggling with mental health issues, and he’s now living with an aunt and uncle who are less than excited to have him. Almost everyone treats him as though he doesn’t matter at all, like he’s nothing. So when a kid at school actually tells him he’s nothing, Alex snaps, and gets violent. Fortunately, his social worker pulls some strings and gets him a job at a nursing home for the summer rather than being sent to juvie. There, he meets Josey, the 107-year-old Holocaust survivor who stopped bothering to talk years ago, and Maya-Jade, the granddaughter of one of the residents with an overblown sense of importance. Unlike Alex, Maya-Jade believes that people care about what she thinks, and that she can make a difference. And when Alex and Josey form an unlikely bond, with Josey confiding in him, Alex starts to believe he can make a difference—a good difference—in the world. If he can truly feel he matters, Alex may be able to finally rise to the occasion of his own life.]]> 288 Gayle Forman 1665943270 Kelly 0 to-read 4.43 Not Nothing

You think of that dream you have, and it keeps you from going down the darkest of holes. Mine is to be an author someday. I'm not sure the puppy storyline was necessary. I see how maybe there needed to be an additional storyline in there, but I'm not sure puppies was the way to go. It felt a bit disjointed to me.

We Are Big Time 90590111 SWISH! Cheer courtside for a Muslim teen as she joins an all-girls, hijab-wearing basketball team and learns that she’s much more than a score. This energetic graphic novel is inspired by a true story!

Aliya is new to Wisconsin, and everything feels different than Florida. The Islamic school is bigger, the city is colder, and her new basketball team is…well, they stink.

Aliya’s still excited to have teammates (although the team's captain, Noura, isn't really Aliya's biggest fan), and their new coach really understands basketball (even if she doesn't know much about being Muslim). This season should be a blast...if they could just start to win. As they strengthen their skills on the court, Aliya and the Peace Academy team discover that it takes more than talent to be great--it's teamwork and self-confidence that defines true success.Ěý

For fans of The Crossover and Roller Girl, this graphic novel goes big with humor and heart as it explores culture and perceptions, fitting in and standing out, and finding yourself, both on and off the court.]]>

This was a unique book. It shows one pig doing too much, only one pig who is on the whole time. But it's great to see that even when that pig is done, the others can come to the rescue. Realistic that the other pigs can suddenly get their act together? Eh, I don't know, but I don't think this book is going for realistic. It is pigs building a road after all.

This book was about a dragon who tried to do too much and felt too big of expectations. It gets brought down to a level where it can be sick and that's okay. I think though it's a metaphor for "you don't always need to be on." I think it's especially directed at boys/men. The phoenix comes in and helps you calm down, take a rest. The illustrations are gorgeous - Dan Santat is the master at drawing dragons and apparently other creatures as well. I would love to take the end papers as just coloring pages.

Ash's Cabin 180724641
Adults ignore the climate crisis. Other kids Ash’s age are more interested in pop stars and popularity contests than in fighting for change. Even Ash’s family seems to be sleepwalking through life.

The only person who ever seemed to get Ash was their Grandpa Edwin. Before he died, he used to talk about building a secret cabin, deep in the California wilderness. Did he ever build it? What if it’s still there, waiting for him to come back…or for Ash to find it? To Ash, that maybe-mythical cabin is starting to feel like the perfect place for a fresh start and an escape from the miserable feeling of alienation that haunts their daily life.

But making the wilds your home isn’t easy. And as much as Ash wants to be alone…can they really be happy alone? Can they survive alone?

From New York Times –bestselling author and illustrator Jen Wang comes a singularly affecting story about self-discovery, self-reliance, and the choice to live when it feels like you have no place in the world.]]>

So I just read ASH’S CABIN. It’s really good. I read it all today. I think a 12-14 year old could read and appreciate it. It does a great job with the setting basically the whole middle of the book is the setting, and hopefully the author made sure the fish and plants she wrote about/drew are specific to that part of California. I thought it worked decently well as a graphic novel with text probably playing a bigger role than the illustrations. I thought there were a couple of plot problems Ash found the cabin super easily, and I thought more of the book was going to be about finding it. I also didn’t feel like there was a lot about climate change as the book advertised. Most of the book was about surviving in the wilderness. There was a bit at the beginning and a bit at the end./

Beyond that, I'm not sure we get much of a sense of our character. We see them doing all kinds of survival things, but I'm not sure we get a lot of development out of them. ]]>

review:
I need Dog Vs. Lemon next or Cat vs. Cucumber.

But, I think zoomies work because there is no speaking during them, so the text kind of slowed down the zoomies in the book, if that's what they were. So I'd do maybe panels or just pictures without text so you get the full effect of zoomies. But it was super cute.

Read it again and think it's even better this time. I think everything works in the story.

Lucía loves to watch the monarchs' migration from her home in Mexico with Papá. But this year, the monarchs' journey north holds extra weight; Papá is heading north, too, to look for work. He promises her that when "the weather turns cold and the monarcas return, our winged ancestors will guide me home." So while he spends the summer months harvesting produce on faraway farms, Lucía watches the skies for signs of the monarchs'—and her papá's—return.

Told through the parallel stories of the butterflies journey and Lucía's migrant farmer father, Cynthia Harmony's A Flicker of Hope is a love letter to the power of families and nature, both of which know no borders.]]>

This book is absolutely gorgeous and a real shame the illustrator isn't eligible, as far as I can tell, for the Caldecott. What an interesting way to combine different types of migration - people and butterflies - and to show families in different ways.

From sunrise to sunset, a group of young Black boys joyously spend the day together as they live their best lives freely in their community. With confidence and a touch of swag, these friends do everything with one build a time machine, tend to the community garden, roleplay in the park, read, take a group selfie, and play basketball. With simple, spare text from celebrated author Carole Boston Weatherford and colorful, playful art from Reggie Brown capturing the pleasures of boyhood and friendship, Bros affirms the truth that Black boys deserve and are worthy of a childhood full of joy and free of risk, just as much as anyone. Timely and buoyant, it’s a story sure to be enjoyed by anyone who knows what it is to be surrounded by friends with a day of adventure ahead of you.]]>

Great book, loved how inclusive it was and has boys doing things some people stereotypically wouldn't associate with them - crying, caring, reading.
