Tja, was soll ich sagen. Dem armen Oberst Chabert, der tapfer und ehrenhaft unter Napoleon gedient hat, dann jedoch bei einer Schlacht schwer verletzt und anschließend irrtümlich für tot erklärt wird, wird übelst mitgespielt. Da er lange unter Amnesie gelitten hat und bis zur vollkommenen Unkenntlichkeit entstellt ist, will ihm niemand nach der beträchtlichen Zeit, die er gebraucht hat, um sich selbst wieder an seine Identität zu erinnern, glauben, dass der abgerissene Bettler, als der er nun erscheint tatsächlich der reiche, als Held gefeierte und angesehene Feldherr ist, der er einst war. Da außerdem einige einflussreiche Leute davon profitieren, allen voran seine Ehefrau, wenn er "tot" bleibt, bricht über ihn nun ein derartiges Übermaß an zwischenmenschlicher, gesellschaftlicher und bürokratischer Niedertracht herein, dass die ihm einzige loyale Person am Ende angeekelt feststellt: "Alle Schrecklichkeiten, die ein phantasievoller Dichter erfinden kann, sind nichts gegen die Wahrheit. (...) Ich will aufs Land, dort will ich mit meiner Frau leben.

Besonders leidet darunter die Schriftstellerin, deren Namen wir bis zum Schluss nicht erfahren. Sie fühlt sich im Laufe der zwanzig Jahre, die Emerenc für sie arbeitet, immer mehr zu ihr hingezogen, entwickelt eine töchterliche Liebe zu ihr, die aber immer wieder durch Emerencens scheinbar zurückweisende und brüske Art erschüttert wird. Die wechselseitige Beziehung wird dadurch erschwert, dass beide eine grundverschiedene Sprache der Liebe sprechen. Während die Schriftstellerin ihre Gefühle verbalisiert und formuliert, kommuniziert Emerenc ihre (durchaus vorhandene) Zuneigung anders: die Währung ihrer Liebe ist die harte Arbeit, die sie für die Menschen (und Tiere) die ihr am Herzen liegen, zu leisten bereit ist. Die aufopferungsvolle Pflege und Hingabe, wenn sie von jemandem in Krankheit und Not gebraucht wird, machen sie zu einem der "letzten Gerechten" in biblischem Sinne (obwohl Emerenc mit der Institution Kirche ausdrücklich nichts zu tun haben will). In dieser unterschiedlichen Art sich auszudrücken liegt die Tragik, dass am Ende des Romans beide Frauen einander zwar zutiefst zugetan sind- aber es nicht schaffen, die jeweils andere davon wirklich in Kenntnis zu setzen, obwohl jede von beiden nach genau dieser Gewissheit dürstet.
Ein ebenso tragischer Konflikt entsteht, als am Ende des Romans die Schriftstellerin vor der Wahl steht, entweder Emerencens physisches Leben zu retten oder ihren Mythos zu zerstören, was ebenfalls einer Auslöschung gleichkommt. Dieser Figur gilt mein Mitleid, denn egal, wofür sie sich entscheidet, sie kann es nur falsch machen, sie wird immer schuldig werden.

Zwei ungewöhnliche Frauen spielen in diesem Roman die Hauptrollen. Da ist einmal Emerenc, die weiß Gott von dem Bild, das man sich normalerweise von einer Haushaltshilfe macht, meilenweit entfernt ist. Zunächst einmal überprüft sie den Leumund potentieller zukünftiger Arbeitgeber, um zu ermitteln, ob diese ihrer Dienste würdig sind (dies ist nicht ironisch gemeint); sie ist es, die die Arbeitszeiten und die Bezahlung festlegt und auch sonst eher rüde mit den Herrschaften umspringt (da sie mehrere Anstellungen gleichzeitig hat und zusätzlich die Gehwege ihrer Straße gewissenhaft im Winter von Schnee, im Herbst von Blättern freihält, ist es nicht unbedingt selbstverständlich, dass sie jeden Tag erscheint).
Aber welch Dienst ist es, den sie da leistet! Zwischen diesen beiden Episoden spielen die Lebens- und Liebesgeschichten mehrerer Generationen, die Miljenko Jergović meisterhaft zu einem fulminanten Familienroman zusammenführt. Er gibt die Fäden seiner Geschichte(n) niemals aus der Hand und entführt den Leser gleichzeitig in die hochpolitische und dramatische Historie des Westbalkan von der Ablösung der osmanischen Herrschaft bis zur Bombardierung Dubrovniks zu Beginn der 90er Jahre.

Für sein ganzes späteres literarisches Werk könnte man sagen: "Am Anfang war das Wort"- oder vielmehr die von ihm geschaffenen Sprachen (denn bei einer blieb es nicht), detailliert ausgefeilt mit vollständiger Grammatik, ethymologischen Herleitungen, Dialektwörtern etc. und irgendwann verspürte er (nunmehr bereits auf dem Weg zum Professor der Sprachwissenschaft in Oxford) den Drang eine Gesellschaft, eine Welt zu erfinden, in der diese von ihm geschaffenen Sprachen zum Leben erwachen sollten, in der sie tatsächlich gesprochen würden- und so entstand seine Mythologie im "Silmarillion" und ihr Schauplatz Mittelerde.

Carpenter beschreibt in seiner Tolkien- Biographie das Leben eines Menschen, der mir unerhört sympathisch ist, zum einen, weil sein Sprach- und Weltenschöpfertum für ihn niemals etwas anderes als ein persönliches Steckenpferd war, von dem er nicht erwartete, dass es ihm jemals kommerziellen oder sonstigen Erfolg einbringen könnte (die Mehrheit seiner Kollegen belächelten ihn dafür, die allermeisten anderen Menschen seiner Umgebung verstanden ihn schlicht nicht)- er tat es einfach, weil er es liebte.
Zum anderen weil er so sehr in seinen persönlichen Vorlieben und seinem ganzen Charakter den Hobbits ähnlich ist, wie er von sich selbst einmal schreibt: "Ich bin selber ein Hobbit, in allem bis auf die Größe. Ich liebe Gärten, Bäume und Ackerland ohne Maschinen; ich rauche Pfeife, esse gern gutbürgerlich und verabscheue die französische Küche; ich trage gern - ein Wagnis in dieser öden Zeit - dekorative Westen. Ich mag Pilze (vom Felde), habe einen sehr einfachen Humor (den sogar meine wohlwollendsten Kritiker störend finden); ich gehe spät zu Bett und stehe spät auf (wenn möglich). Ich reise nicht viel."
Doch sind die Hobbits nicht nur Widerspiegelungen persönlicher Eigenheiten. Sie stellen die Verbindung eines engen Horizonts mit großem Mut dar, eine Verbindung, die (wie Tolkien in den Schützengräben des ersten Weltkriegs gesehen hatte) oft unter hoffnungslosen Bedingungen zu überleben half. "Es hat mich immer beeindruckt", sagte er einmal, "dass wir noch da und am Leben sind, dank des unbezähmbaren Muts ganz kleiner Leute, gegen alle Aussichten."

Tolkien war optimistisch und pessimistisch (vor allem seit dem frühen Tod seiner Mutter) zugleich, bescheiden, nach außen hin ein scheinbar relativ eintöniges Leben führend und doch außerordentlich schöpferisch auf seinem ganz eigenen Gebiet.

Doch sind die Hobbits nicht nur Widerspiegelungen persönlicher Eigenheiten.
