- يتركز فكر بول ريكور في هذا الكتاب حول فكرة رئيسة هي هل الترجمة ممكنة أم مستحيلة حيث يقدم مجموعة من الحلول لتجاوز هذا النقاش العقيم ويستدل على ملاحظة مفادها أن الأعمال العظيمة قد شكلت على مر العصور موضوع ترجمات متعدددة. ولهذا يرى أن الترجمة هي "تحد".

- وإذ يتناول ريكور موضوع الترجمة، فإنه يقاربها من جهة نظر تأويلية، أي أن الترجمة، مهما كانت تقنية، فإنها في نهاية المطاف عبارة عن تأويل. ولكي تحصل هذه المزية، فإن الفيلسوف يفرق بين مفهومين أساسيين هما الفهم والتفسير، ولا يتحقق الثاني إلا بتحقيق الأول حيث يرى أن "ميدان الفهم هو العلامات والدلالة".

تتحدث الرواية عن راع أندلسي شاب يدعى سانتياغو. مضى للبحث عن حلمه المتمثل بكنزٍ مدفون قرب أهرامات مصر، بدأت رحلته من أسبانيا عندما إلتقى الملك "ملكي صادق" الذي أخبره عن الكنز، عَبَرَ مضيق جبل طارق ماراً بالمغرب حتى بلغ مصر، وكانت توجهه طوال الرحلة إشارات غيبية.

وفي طريقه للعثور على كنزه الحلم، أحداث كثيرة تقع، كل حدث منها استحال عقبة تكاد تمنعه من متابعة رحلته، إلى أن يجد الوسيلة التي تساعده على تجاوز هذه العقبة....
