And many churches have traded in their biblical roots for complacent conventionality. But Jesus and the church are anything but conventional. The hallmark of our faith is that it sees the world differently than the world sees itself.

We are called to be eccentric―off center, unique, different; not conformed to the patterns of the world but transformed by the renewing of our minds. By the grace of God we are not only dissatisfied by sin but increasingly uncompelled by conventionality.

So resist the allure of acceptability. Get back to the unsafe roots of our faith. Be equipped to surprise the world with the Good News it didn’t even know it was waiting for. Challenge the way things are by living a life that has been truly set free by Christ.]]>

<![CDATA[The North-West Is Our Mother: The Story of Louis Riel's People, the Metis Nation]]> 36137596 There is a missing chapter in the narrative of Indigenous Peoples in Canada—the story of the Métis Nation, a new Indigenous people descended from both First Nations and Europeans.

Their story begins in the last decade of the eighteenth century in the Canadian North-West. Within twenty years the MĂ©tis proclaimed themselves a nation and won their first battle. Within forty years they were famous throughout North America for their military skills, their nomadic life and their buffalo hunts.

The Métis Nation didn’t just drift slowly into the Canadian consciousness in the early 1800s; it burst onto the scene fully formed. The Métis were flamboyant, defiant, loud and definitely not noble savages. They were nomads with a very different way of being in the world—always on the move, very much in the moment, passionate and fierce. They were romantics and visionaries with big dreams. They battled continuously—for recognition, for their lands and for their rights and freedoms. In 1870 and 1885, led by the iconic Louis Riel, they fought back when Canada took their lands. These acts of resistance became defining moments in Canadian history, with implications that reverberate to this day: Western alienation, Indigenous rights and the French/English divide.

After being defeated at the Battle of Batoche in 1885, the Métis lived in hiding for twenty years. But early in the twentieth century, they determined to hide no more and began a long, successful fight back into the Canadian consciousness. The Métis people are now recognized in Canada as a distinct Indigenous nation. Written by the great-grandniece of Louis Riel, this popular and engaging history of “forgotten people tells the story up to the present era of national reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

2019 marks the 175th anniversary of Louis Riel’s birthday (October 22, 1844)]]>

<![CDATA[Jesus Drives Me Crazy!: Lose Your Mind, Find Your Soul]]> 19101471 ---From the book
All people are different, but some are more different than others. Christians are meant to be the most different of all. Yet we often 'normalize' God. We judge what is a successful Christian and a successful church by the world according to Normal, not the world according to NUTS, the wisdom of Jesus.
In Jesus Drives Me Crazy!, Leonard Sweet reminds us of the 'crazy wisdom' of Christ and how our lives and our churches can and should be different from the way 'normal' people live. He says, 'Jesus wants to drive you crazy . . . crazy in love with God, with life.' Jesus Drives Me Crazy! challenges you to make the upside-down wisdom of God your own, inspiring you to live an extraordinary Christian life that does not conform to the world, but transforms the world.
When you truly grasp the freeing truth that we do not have to conform to this world, then you can become the crazy, zany, unpredictable, but powerful force for Jesus you were intended to be. Jesus Drives Me Crazy! shows how, by losing your mind, you can find your soul.]]>

<![CDATA[The Age of AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity]]> 51282696 Associate research fellow at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Jason Thacker, helps us navigate our digital age in this thoughtful exploration of the social, moral, and ethical challenges of our ongoing interactions with artificial intelligence.

Alexa, how is AI changing our world?ĚýWe interact with artificial intelligence, or AI, nearly every moment of the day without knowing it. From our Twitter and Facebook social media feeds to our online carts to smart thermostats and Alexa and Google Home, AI is everywhere. In The Age of AI, Jason Thacker shows us how Christian truth transforms how we use AI in order to love God and our neighbor better.

Applying God's Word to this new AI-empowered age, The Age of AI serves as a guide for those wary of technology's impact on our society and also for those who are enthusiastic about where AI is taking us. Jason explains how AI affects us individually, in our relationships, and in our society at large as he addresses AI's impact on our bodies, sexuality, work, economics, and privacy. With theological depth and a wide awareness of the current trends in AI, Jason is a steady guide reminding us that while AI is changing most things, it does not change the foundations of the Christian faith.

Are robots going to take my job? How are smartphones affecting my kids? Do I need to worry about privacy when I get online or ask Siri for directions? Whatever questions you have about AI, The Age of AI gives you insights on how to navigate this brand new world as you apply God's ageless truths to your life and future.]]>

<![CDATA[The Attributes of God - with study questions]]> 19324800 - this edition has study questions for each chapter adapted from Mt. Zion Bible Institute.

"The Attributes of God" has become a Christian classic in our time. Unlike other more devotional treatments, Pink considers the Biblical evidence for each of God’s attributes and gives in-depth insight into His character and very nature. The reader leaves each chapter both exalting God and better understanding “Him with whom we have to do.

Attributes studied include: God's solitariness, Decrees, Knowledge, Supremacy, Sovereignty, Immutability, Holiness, Power, Faithfulness, Goodness, Patience, Grace, Mercy, Love, Wrath, and Contemplation.

Arthur W. Pink was born in Nottingham, England in 1886, and born again of the Spirit of God in 1908. He studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, USA for only six weeks before beginning his pastoral work in Colorado. From there he pastored churches in California, Kentucky and South Carolina before moving on to Sidney, Australia for a brief period, preaching and teaching. In 1934, He returned to his native land, England, and in 1940 took up permanent residence on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, remaining there until his death twelve years later in 1952. Most of his works, including The Attributes of God, first appeared as articles in the monthly Studies in the Scriptures published from 1922 to 1953.]]>

<![CDATA[Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business]]> 11177431 In October 1985, at age twenty-seven, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants—Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes eleven unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Some of Danny's other insights:

Hospitality is present when something happens for you. It is absent when something happens to you. These two simple conceptsfor and to—express it all.

Context, context, context, trumps the outdated location, location, location.

Shared ownership develops when guests talk about a restaurant as if it's theirs. That sense of affiliation builds trust and invariably leads to repeat business.

Err on the side of generosity: You get more by first giving more.

Wherever your center lies, know it, name it, believe in it. When you cede your core values to someone else, it's time to quit.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

I came upon this book by chance. Other than the book summary I was not sure what was in store for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

Michael, the author/tour guide, provided his reader with both a historical and a very up to date picture of Israel. A key reason I became captivated by the stories in the book was because I discovered the author was from the first kibbutz I served on as a volunteer in 1973. So, I often found his illustrations would bring images to my mind of past explorations and events that I experienced in Israel.

Michael attempted to tell his stories from a variety of differing perspectives. Each member of his composite tour group came from different backgrounds and had differing opinions. So, the reader was given both pro and con sides to the Israeli debate.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to discover Israel through the eyes of an Israeli trying to see his country from sometimes similar and other times outright opposing views.]]>

<![CDATA[A Year with God: Living Out the Spiritual Disciplines]]> 7251895
In Richard Foster′s best-selling book, Celebration of Discipline, he explored the "classic disciplines," or central spiritual practices of the Christian faith. Foster showed that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to spiritual growth can be found. In A Year with God, the spiritual disciplines are presented in such a way that does not destroy the soul but enables the reader to enter into a transforming life with God.

Through daily spiritual exercises and meditations, A Year with God explores eighteen spiritual disciplines. The inward disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study offer avenues of personal examination and change. The outward disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service help prepare one to make the world a better place. The corporate disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration bring one nearer to others and to God. Each discipline will be given twenty days of readings, beginning with scripture and followed by commentary, a meditation, and a spiritual exercise. Practicing these spiritual disciplines will help readers live intentionally, contributing to a more balanced spiritual life and a reformation of the inner self.]]>

<![CDATA[Deep Roots, Wild Branches: Revitalizing the Church in the Blended Ecology]]> 44286071 What is the future of the church in North America? Churches are closing faster than new ones can be planted. Existing churches engaged in effective evangelism beyond the tired tactics of attractional approaches are increasingly rare. One of the major pitfalls of the past few decades is “either/or thinking—either attractional or missional; traditional or contemporary; old or new. In Deep Roots, Wild Branches, missiologist and church planter Dr. Michael Beck contends we must cultivate what he calls a “blended ecology of church that has both deep roots and wild branches. Beck introduces us to present-day models and examples that don’t leave traditional forms behind, but harness the power of “both/and. It honors vintage models while blending fresh expressions of real evangelism.

The church is losing ground fast: losing the generation under age 30 and drawing few nonbelievers toward Christ.ĚýChrist gave us a leadership model for commando outreach, and the church has ignored it for too long. <![CDATA[Reaching the Unreached: Becoming Raiders of the Lost Art]]> 35062849
The search for the “silver bullet of success has diverted us from tapping into the timeless principles found in the book of Acts, says author, pastor, and front-line church planter Peyton Jones. Yet the spiritual climate that Paul and the Apostles stepped into is not all that different from the brave new world the church faces today.

From accidentally planting a church in a Starbucks in Europe, to baptizing members of the Mexican mafia in Long Beach Harbor, Jones has been on the frontlines of today’s missional movement and has lived to tell the tale. In Reaching the Unreached, he teaches church planters, pastors, and church leaders how to convert pew jockeys into missionaries and awake the sleeping giant of Christ’s church, one person at a time.

Today there are two types of those who put their proverbial heads in the sand, and those who champion 1st century principles, meet the challenges head on, and embrace the adventure of mission in community. Tomorrow, only one type of church will survive—those that accept the challenge to reach the unreached.]]>

<![CDATA[Good Works: Hospitality and Faithful Discipleship]]> 59125478
Keith Wasserman, the founder and executive director of Good Works, and Christine Pohl, a scholar of hospitality who has written extensively on church and mission, explore challenging insights from the story of Good Works and how it has grown over the years into a unique expression of discipleship in the body of Christ. At the heart of this community’s story are connection and mutuality. Good Works functions not as a charity or social service agency but as a place where everyone has the opportunity to both serve and be served. And although worship is a central paradigm for life at Good Works, Keith and the leaders of the community regularly partner with non-Christians from all walks of life who desire to help.Ěý

Christians who hunger for lifegiving involvement in their local communities—wherever they might be, and in whichever circumstances—will find inspiration and guidance in this quiet but powerful Appalachian ministry. Short prayers and questions for reflection at the end of each chapter make this a book to be studied and shared among those who know that love of God and neighbor is the starting point, but who aren’t sure where to go from there.]]>

<![CDATA[Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith]]> 38208599 Henri Nouwen—beloved author, priest, and internationally recognized spiritual master, counselor, and guide—offers gentle wisdom for universal questions of the spiritual life:

Who am I?
Where have I been and where am I going?
Who is God for me?
Where do I belong?
How can I be of service?

As a priest, pastor, and professor of spirituality at Notre Dame, Yale, and Harvard, Nouwen offered spiritual direction to many students, but his famous course on spiritual direction was never recorded during his lifetime. Now, in Spiritual Direction, the first of a series, one of Nouwen's students (Michael Christensen) and one of his editors (Rebecca Laird) have developed his courses and practice of spiritual direction into a book of profound wisdom for living a deep spiritual life.

<![CDATA[Total Church: A Radical Reshaping around Gospel and Community (Re:lit)]]> 23430925 "Church is not a meeting you attend or a place you enter," write pastors Tim Chester and Steve Timmis. "It's an identity that is ours in Christ. An identity that shapes the whole of life so that life and mission become 'total church.'" With that as their premise, they emphasize two overarching principles to govern the practice of church and mission: being gospel-centered and being community-centered. When these principles take precedence, say the authors, the truth of the Word is upheld, the mission of the gospel is carried out, and the priority of relationships is practiced in radical ways. The church becomes not just another commitment to juggle but a 24/7 lifestyle where programs, big events, and teaching from one person take a backseat to sharing lives, reaching out, and learning about God together.

In Total Church, Chester and Timmis first outline the biblical case for making gospel and community central and then apply this dual focus to evangelism, social involvement, church planting, world missions, discipleship, pastoral care, spirituality, theology, apologetics, youth and children's work. As this insightful book calls the body of Christ to rethink its perspective and practice of church, it charts a middle path between the emerging church movement and conservative evangelicalism that all believers will find helpful.

<![CDATA[When There Is No Miracle: Finding Hope in Pain and Suffering]]> 33255008 You don't always need a miracle to find light in times of darkness

Heartbreak is impartial. Tragedies--global and personal--strike every day. Destruction, anxiety, and catastrophe have become our daily companions.

Over his long career, Robert Wise has been on the front lines of disaster. From the Oklahoma City bombing to 9/11's ground zero to the bedsides of lost loved ones, Wise has stood on tragic ground and ministered to those who have lost seemingly everything. Each of those hurting people asked the same questions: Why do the innocent suffer? Why doesn't God deliver the light of miracles in the darkest times?

In the midst of his own questioning, Wise has discovered some surprising and encouraging answers. In this book, he shares those lessons, encouraging all those who struggle. You'll learn some unexpected positive benefits of pain and suffering, and see how God is always behind the scenes working for the ultimate good--even when you can't see or imagine how.

"With transparency and compassion, Wise delivers numerous illustrations of God's incredible timing along with His grace, His mercy, and the unbelievable healing power of His love."

He not only provides a strong biblical and missiological rationale for bivocational leadership, but he also shares practical insight on the benefits and challenges of being bivocational. I really love this book. I will recommend it often to pastors and church planters.

Brad Brisco - Director of Bivocational Church Planting for the North American Mission Board and author of â€Missional Essentialsâ€ and â€Next Door as It Is in Heavenâ€

Andrew is an experienced and insightful bivocational pastor. He has written a challenging book, calling the church to reconsider its bivocational roots and to explore this dimension as the means to a healthy and vibrant missional future. The Future is Bivocational ought to be read and taken seriously by all pastors who seek effective missional engagement and connection with the world around them.

Alan Hirsch - Founding Director of Forge Mission Training Network

This book is the most important book I’ve read on ministry in the last decade. Bivocational ministry is not just a fad. This form of ministry has deep roots in the church’s history and is the most common form of ministry in World Christianity. Bivocational ministry is revolutionising our current practices of ministry. Andrew Hamilton writes out of deep conviction and practical experience. This book shows us how to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the bivocational life. The future is bivocational. Every church leader should read this book. Andrew Hamilton’s book should be on the reading list of all ministry teams and in every ministry training program.

The author provides many insights into living our Christian faith in a world that has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Throughout each chapter Andrew uses personal stories to illustrate his main points. At the end of each chapter he lists a number of questions for reflection on each chapter’s topic. Overall he provides his readers with practical and personal insight into the concept of bivocational ministry.

Having served bivocational for over two decades I found the book tended towards a very tradition concept of bivocational. The practical aspects of working within a traditional church was the focus of much of the discussion. I agree with the author that there is a major shift happening in North America that is leading towards more bivocational ministry. His readers are left with more questions than answers which is a good thing. Therefore, I would summarize that the author provides a good overview and starting point for those who want to know more about or if God is calling them to a bivocational or covocational ministry. ]]>

<![CDATA[This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See]]> 40510807 Real marketing isn't about racking up clicks and tweets; it's about connection, empathy, and making a difference.

Over the past quarter century, Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and bestselling books. He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip.

Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one accessible, timeless package. At the heart of his approach is a big idea: Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. They don't just make noise; they make the world better. Truly powerful marketing is grounded in empathy, generosity, and emotional labor.

This book teaches you how to identify your smallest viable audience; draw on the right signals and signs to position your offering; build trust and permission with your target market; speak to the narratives your audience tells themselves about status, affiliation, and dominance; spot opportunities to create and release tension; and give people the tools to achieve their goals.

It's time for marketers to stop lying, spamming, and feeling guilty about their work. It's time to stop confusing social media metrics with true connections. It's time to stop wasting money on stolen attention that won't pay off in the long run. THIS IS MARKETING offers a better approach that will still apply for decades to come, no matter how the tactics of marketing continue to evolve.]]>

<![CDATA[NOT A BOOK: Summary: The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.Covey - More knowledge in less time]]> 39716071
A habit is a pattern derived from frequent repetition. It becomes an unconscious choice to act a certain way with oneself or with others. A habit can be as simple as waking up at dawn or saying thank you when a person lends you a favor. Covey puts forth that all successful people share these 7 habits, which become an integral part of a person’s character. By striving to implement these character traits into our own lives, we can be effective and successful too.

Changing our habit’s to mirror those in 7 Habits of Highly Successful People is not simple. A process may require baby steps when our instincts tell us to take giant leaps. Fortitude is required but the payoff is enormous.

The 7 habits toward success can be taken in three stages. Independence happens when we work on ourselves internally. These steps towards self-regulation include habits 1-3.

1.Be Proactive

2.Begin with the end in mind

3.Put first things first

Once we achieve independence, it is time to improve interaction with others. In the words of John Donne (1572-1631) No man is an island, entire of itself; The following three habits will help us achieve interdependence.

4.Think Win-win

5.Seek first to be understood then to understand

6.Synergize

The final habit of highly successful people is perhaps the most important because without it the others are no possible.

7.Sharpen the Saw

These tools can set you on the road to success. 7 Habits of Highly Successful People has sold over 15 million copies worldwide and it can be read in over 30 languages. World known business leaders and heads of state like President Bill Clinton of the United States have found this book useful. The time is now to begin implementing them into your life.]]>

<![CDATA[Church Plantology: The Art and Science of Planting Churches (Exponential Series)]]> 57799310 The first comprehensive textbook on effective church planting from a veteran church planter.

The Apostle Paul was a veteran church planter who "laid a foundation like a wise and master builder" and there is much we can learn from his example. Paul indicated that there were basic skills and experiences required to successfully plant a church. Church Plantology examines the wide variety of church planting methods and ideologies in contemporary pastoral practice and outlines a biblical model based on the New Testament.

During his time in prison, Paul spent much of his time writing to Titus, Timothy, and others who'd served alongside him in the trenches to complete their training as church plantings. We can continue to apply these time-tested, proven methods, following the pioneering example of the early church.

Today, the casualty rate in is high. What if we could reduce the odds of failing? Church Plantology by Peyton Jones is a robust guide to planting that will help planters to provide the foundation necessary to survive beyond the initial first years so that they don't end up a walking statistic.]]>

Reading MetaChurch by Dave Adamson was a refreshing dive into the world of digital ministry. Rather than just provide information Dave asks questions. The book is divided into three parts: the philosophical argument, the practical application and ends with planning ahead. Each section provides the reader with personal stories, questions needing to be asked and practical helps to get started. The fact he wants his kids to inherit a church that is better positioned to deal with the future speaks volumes. The only downside to the book is the author speaks from a mega church perspective. However, most everything in the book can be adapted to different models of church. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in digital ministry.

I was part of the launch team and received an advance copy of the book. Everything stated in my review is solely my opinion.

“There’s a cost to rethinking, much less re-digging new wells or models of church, that we’ve invested so much in over a long time. Every church leader has a model or approach or way of doing church. Changing our model requires us working through issues of theology, rethinking definitions of community, reimagining our idea of discipleship and ministry, and rewriting our long-held liturgies. ~ Dave Adamson]]>

In a time when these values were unspoken of, Canada was the first country to embrace an official multiculturalism policy. The following aspects are included in the * The coming of the Aboriginal peoples to Canada. * The first Viking expedition to Canada led by Leif Eriksson. * The initial European explorations that took place during the 15-16th centuries and how these laid the grounds for the colonization movement that followed afterward. * Canada’s role and place in the world today. * The primary elements that shape the Canadian culture and what makes it so distinctive. * Main places to visit in some sights and attractions that shouldn’t miss from your itinerary if you want to understand * Canada's culture and uniqueness. Only when you aim at learning about a country’s history could you fully grasp its culture and evolution. This beautiful country is unexpectedly intriguing once you get to learn more about it.]]> 92 William D. Willis Rob 3 Good Overview

The book offered a good overview of Canada’s history. Knowing in advance that the book did not provide in depth coverage allowed me to enjoy what was offered. The author provided questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. I also found the headings in each chapter gave much food for thought as they posed the opposite perspective on Canada. The author then went on to describe the difference between how Canada is perceived and how it is in actuality. The negative aspect of the book is the amount of promotion and ads. Good Overview

Overall, I would recommend the book as a good overview of Canada’s history.

We should all become familiar the parables that Jesus gave us. For if the book of Proverbs that Solomon wrote is oftentimes referred to as the book of wisdom. And now a greater one than Solomon is here (Jesus Christ), Matthew 12:42. Therefore, how much greater will be our blessing be, when we understand the parables that Jesus gave us.

<![CDATA[Foundations of Chaplaincy: A Practical Guide]]> 57117000
Chaplaincy is unlike any other kind of ministry. It involves working outside a church, without a congregation, usually in a secular organization. It requires ministering to those with starkly different religious convictions, many of whom may never enter a house of worship. It is, as Alan Baker writes, “ministry in motion.â€ Those who are embarking upon this unique and specialized call deserve equally unique and specialized guidance, andĚýFoundations of ChaplaincyĚýoffers exactly that.Ěý

Baker surveys the biblical and theological foundations of chaplaincy before enumerating four specific responsibilities and skills that define chaplaincy’s “ministry of presenceâ€: providing, facilitating, caring, and advising. Baker’s thorough guidance on these matters is supplemented in sidebars with practical advice and anecdotes from over thirty chaplains currently serving in a variety of settings and organizations.Ěý

Chaplains who serve in healthcare, the military, correctional institutions, police and fire departments, sports teams, college campuses, and corporations have essential roles to play in their respective organizations, but theirs is rarely an easy calling. WithĚýFoundations of ChaplaincyĚýas an introduction and an ongoing reference, those called to this important vocation may be assured of having the tools they need to cultivate a strong, mission-driven pastoral identity rooted in their own theological tradition while simultaneously participating in a multi-faith team.]]>

<![CDATA[Follow: A Simple and Profound Call to Live Like Jesus]]> 20452825
Follow is a real-life guide to discipleship the Jesus way. Here Floyd McClung tells how he traded a life of religion for a life of relationship with Jesus—a relationship that led him to form communities of Christian disciples around the world.

Taking the Gospels at face value leads Floyd to define a radical strategy for discipling new believers while strengthening our own devotional lives. He details practical ideas for forming discipleship groups that reflect Jesus’s principles of accountability, transparency, humility, and outreach. Through it all, Floyd emphasizes the importance of following Jesus personally rather than adhering to ineffective rules or traditions.

With stories and scriptural principles, Floyd McClung leads us through the liberating process of changing the focus of our lives from ourselves to Jesus so we can do life the way Jesus did—and experience a richer spiritual life than we’ve ever known.Ěý±Ő±Ő>

In this book Stevens argues that our calling does not end with formal retirement; to the contrary, we do well to keep on working, if possible, till life's end. Stevens delves into matters of calling, spirituality, and legacy in retirement, showing that we must continue to discern our vocation as we grow older in order to remain meaningfully engaged for the rest of our lives. I read this book in Kindle format. The book touched on a subject that I was not fully aware even though I am now considered a young oldie. The author divided his writing into three parts. The first part focused on our calling. The idea that your calling may change but never really ends. The second part dealt with spirituality. Age does not necessarily make a person more spiritual. Spirituality needs to be nurtured even in our later years of life. The third and final part talks about our legacy. What is it we want to leave our children? Overall the author managed to bring some very important and relevant information for anyone entering or in their retirement years. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand more about growing older and some of the things that will help people in their lifelong walk with Jesus.

<![CDATA[Rethinking Retirement: Finishing Life for the Glory of Christ]]> 8250843
They say it's a person's reward for all those years of labor. "Turn in your time card and trade in your IRAs. Let travel plans and golf-course leisure lead the way." But is retirement really the ideal? Or is it a series of poor options that ignore a greater purpose-and will kill a person more quickly than old age?

John Piper "Lord, spare me this curse!" And his resounding message is for anyone who believes there's far more to the golden years than accumulating comforts. It's for readers who long to finish better than they started, persevere for the right reasons (and without fear), experience true security, value what lies beyond their cravings, and live dangerously for the One who gave his life in his prime. With this brief book, Piper is sure to spur fellow baby boomers in their resolve to invest themselves in the sacrifices of love-and to grow old with godly zeal.]]>

<![CDATA[The Ninefold Path of Jesus: Hidden Wisdom of the Beatitudes]]> 58472346 What if we lived in a world of abundance?

In the Beatitudes, Jesus offers nine sayings that move us beyond our first instincts and instead embrace the deeper reality of the kingdom of God. They name the illusions and false beliefs that have kept us chained and imprisoned. We've learned to live from a mentality of anxiety and greed, but what if a world of abundance with solace and comfort are actually near? We've learned to live by striving, competition, and comparison, but what if we all have equal dignity and worth?

Mark Scandrette shows how the Beatitudes invite us into nine new postures for life. Instead of living in fear, we can choose radical love. It's often assumed that the good life is only for the most wealthy, attractive, and powerful. Poor, sad, and suffering people are left out. But the ninefold path of the Beatitudes is for everyone. Whatever your story, whatever your struggle, wherever you find yourself, this way is available to you.]]>

<![CDATA[The Starfish and the Spirit: Unleashing the Leadership Potential of Churches and Organizations]]> 57302425 The Starfish and the Spider, Ori Brafman shows why the distributed structures of starfish organizations are uniquely fit to the church. They can function without a rigid central authority, and their regenerative abilities make them nimbler in reacting to external forces. Seeding starfish networks inside todays churches will prepare the church of tomorrow to be agile while still maintaining the necessary accountability to be effective.

Rather than advocating the adoption of a starfish structure in place of the hierarchy of the spider, Brafman, along with pastors Lance Ford and Rob Wegner, emphasize the advantages of adapting the structure and order inherent in a spider organization toward a hybrid model--either a Spiderfish approach (leaning toward centralization) or a Starder approach (leaning toward decentralization).

The Starfish and the Spirit is about creating a culture where church leaders view themselves as curators of a community on mission, not the source of certainty for every question and project. It is about creating a team of humble leaders "in the middle" of the church, not at the top--leaders who naturally reproduce multiple generations of leaders, from the middle out on mission. Imagine a church led by a team whose gifts and talents are completely unleashed, enabling everyone to show up and step up with all they really are. The joy and vigor coming from the collective strength, intelligence, and skill in the community of leaders not only brings greater potency but better yields for your ministry as well. What would it be like to see this kind of healthy leadership reproduced into the second, third, and fourth generation, on multiple strands?]]>

<![CDATA[No Silver Bullets: Five Small Shifts that will Transform Your Ministry]]> 36446344
The myth of the silver bullet still exists because we desperately want it to. We all prefer quick fixes and bandage solutions to the long, hard, slow work that produces real change. So the moment we learn about a new ministry or strategy and see its effect in another church, we run to implement it in our own. Unfortunately, this impulse is usually met by opposition, skepticism, and ultimately, rejection.

What if the solution isn't a new model or a complicated strategy, but a shift in perspective? What if you could keep your church's current vision, values, and model, and simply make a few micro-shifts...leading to macro-changes?

This book explores five micro-shifts that have the potential to produce macro-changes in your church. As you read, you will discover how to integrate these micro-shifts into the life of your church, starting with the way you disciple. You will finish by developing a plan to structure, communicate, and evaluate these changes to ensure that they take root and pave the way for lasting change and kingdom impact.
