<![CDATA[The Golden Enclaves (The Scholomance, #3)]]> 55858638 New York Times bestselling trilogy that began with A Deadly Education and The Last Graduate.

The one thing you never talk about while you're in the Scholomance is what you'll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it's all we dream about, the hideously slim chance we'll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls.

And now the impossible dream has come true. I'm out, we're all out--and I didn't even have to turn into a monstrous dark witch to make it happen. So much for my great-grandmother's prophecy of doom and destruction. I didn't kill enclavers, I saved them. Me, and Orion, and our allies. Our graduation plan worked to perfection: we saved everyone and made the world safe for all wizards and brought peace and harmony to all the enclaves of the world.

Ha, only joking! Actually it's gone all wrong. Someone else has picked up the project of destroying enclaves in my stead, and probably everyone we saved is about to get killed in the brewing enclave war on the horizon. And the first thing I've got to do now, having miraculously got out of the Scholomance, is turn straight around and find a way back in.]]>

I liked this series a lot. This book isn’t a romance novel and doesn’t have a happy ending in which all villains get punished. I like the blend of trying to change the system from within, sticking with your friends, living up to your legacy and choosing what is right over what is easy.

Once Grace and Sam have found each other, they know they must fight to stay together. For Sam, this means a reckoning with his werewolf past. For Grace, it means facing a future that is less and less certain.

Into their world comes a new wolf named Cole, whose past is full of hurt and danger. He is wrestling with his own demons, embracing the life of a wolf while denying the ties of being a human.

the linger.
For Grace, Sam, and Cole, life is a constant struggle between two forces - wolf and human - with love baring its two sides as well. It is harrowing and euphoric, freeing and entrapping, enticing and alarming. As their world falls apart, love is what lingers. But will it be enough?]]>

What to write about this book? It’s book 2 in a series and I low key enjoyed the first book so I tried this one too. It’s not great but not awful either. Lots of teenage angst and things not being said. Then again, I will read part three because the build up was there.

<![CDATA[Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven]]> 17883941
John Eliot Gardiner grew up passing one of the only two authentic portraits of Bach every morning and evening on the stairs of his parents house, where it hung for safety during World War II. He has been studying and performing Bach ever since, and is now regarded as one of the composer’s greatest living interpreters. The fruits of this lifetime’s immersion are distilled in this remarkable book, grounded in the most recent Bach scholarship but moving far beyond it, and explaining in wonderful detail the ideas on which Bach drew, how he worked, how his music is constructed, how it achieves its effects—and what it can tell us about Bach the man.

Gardiner’s background as a historian has encouraged him to search for ways in which scholarship and performance can cooperate and fruitfully coalesce. This has entailed piecing together the few biographical shards, scrutinizing the music, and watching for those instances when Bach’s personality seems to penetrate the fabric of his notation. Gardiner’s aim is “to give the reader a sense of inhabiting the same experiences and sensations that Bach might have had in the act of music-making. This, I try to show, can help us arrive at a more human likeness discernible in the closely related processes of composing and performing his music.

It is very rare that such an accomplished performer of music should also be a considerable writer and thinker about it. John Eliot Gardiner takes us as deeply into Bach’s works and mind as perhaps words can. The result is a unique book about one of the greatest of all creative artists. ]]>

This is a book which was a journey for me. It took me ages to finish, reading it on and off for 7 months. I’ve been in awe of J.S. Bach’s compositions for as long as I can remember. In this book, Gardiner manages to paint a picture of the man, the husband, the father, the teacher, the musician, the composer, the human Bach. With his shortcomings and his talent, his devotion and obsessions. Highly recommended, but at least basic knowledge about musical theory is necessary to understand this book.

<![CDATA[The Murder of Harriet Monckton]]> 39783179
On 7th November 1843, Harriet Monckton, 23 years old and a woman of respectable parentage and religious habits, was found murdered in the privy behind the dissenting chapel she had regularly attended in Bromley, Kent. The community was appalled by her death, apparently as a result of swallowing a fatal dose of prussic acid, and even more so when the autopsy revealed that Harriet was six months pregnant.

Drawing on the coroner's reports and witness testimonies, the novel unfolds from the viewpoints of each of the main characters, each of whom have a reason to want her dead. Harriet Monckton had at least three lovers and several people were suspected of her murder, including her close companion and fellow teacher, Miss Frances Williams. The scandal ripped through the community, the murderer was never found and for years the inhabitants of Bromley slept less soundly.

This rich, robust novel is full of suggestion and suspicion, with the innocent looking guilty and the guilty hiding behind their piety. It is also a novel that exposes the perilous position of unmarried women, the scandal of sex out of wedlock and the hypocrisy of upstanding, church-going folk.]]>

This book was an interesting read. Based on a real 1843 murder case, it's the fictionalized story of Harriet Monckton, who found herself pregnant while not married. Surrounded by some who loved her and lots of people who had reasons to wish her out of the way, hers must have been a difficult case. The authors acknowledgement about which parts are fictional was very helpful indeed.

<![CDATA[The Violinist's Thumb: And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, as Written by Our Genetic Code]]> 13521382 From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes incredible stories of science, history, language, and music, as told by our own DNA.

In The Disappearing Spoon, bestselling author Sam Kean unlocked the mysteries of the periodic table. In The Violinist's Thumb, he explores the wonders of the magical building block of life: DNA.

There are genes to explain crazy cat ladies, why other people have no fingerprints, and why some people survive nuclear bombs. Genes illuminate everything from JFK's bronze skin (it wasn't a tan) to Einstein's genius. They prove that Neanderthals and humans bred thousands of years more recently than any of us would feel comfortable thinking. They can even allow some people, because of the exceptional flexibility of their thumbs and fingers, to become truly singular violinists.

Kean's vibrant storytelling once again makes science entertaining, explaining human history and whimsy while showing how DNA will influence our species' future.

Genes, freaks, DNA : how do living things pass down traits to their children? --
The near death of Darwin : why did geneticists try to kill natural selection? --

Love and atavisms : what genes make mammals mammals? --
Humanzees and other near misses : when did humans break away from monkeys, and why? --
Scarlet A's, C's, G's, and T's : why did humans almost go extinct? --

The art of the gene : how deep in our DNA is artistic genius? --

Let me start by saying I love this series. The characters are complex and multidimensional and the plot is always interesting. In this installment, the professional and private life of Helen Grace collide head on... The storyline has so many twists and turns it reminded me of an episode of House MD, in a good way. My sole reason for not giving this book a 5 star rating is the cliffhanger at the end. Sure, it makes people buy the next book -which I did within five minutes after finishing this one-, but it feels very unfinished. Normally I wouldn't read two books by the same author back to back, but I now need to know what happens next.
