Now change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he's pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he's never met.

Incredibly funny and poignant, this twenty-first-century coming-of-age, coming out story—wrapped in a geek romance—is a knockout of a debut novel by Becky Albertalli.]]>
325 Becky Albertalli 0062348698 louise !! 4 “People really are like house with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe it's a good thing, the way we never stop surprising each other.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda was a positive portrayal of the struggles of coming out and everything else that comes with being in high school. There are many LGBT novels out there that place a focus on the hardships of being gay in the south, and while this novel doesn't lack those things, Becky Albertalli is able to make you feel so happy and bubbly as you read about Simon and his group.

“He talked about the ocean between people. And how the whole point of everything is to find a shore worth swimming to.

The romance is sweet and is told mostly through emails that Jacques (Simon's online alias) and Blue send to each other, and the pitfalls of someone finding out about them and subsequently using them for blackmail.

I highly recommend this for those who want a quick, funny and happy contemporary with a diverse cast.]]>

<![CDATA[The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett]]> 31775995 Hawthorn wasn't trying to insert herself into a missing person's investigation. Or maybe she was. But that's only because Lizzie Lovett's disappearance is the one fascinating mystery their sleepy town has ever had. Bad things don't happen to popular girls like Lizzie Lovett, and Hawthorn is convinced she'll turn up at any moment-which means the time for speculation is now.

So Hawthorn comes up with her own theory for Lizzie's disappearance. A theory way too absurd to take seriously...at first. The more Hawthorn talks, the more she believes. And what better way to collect evidence than to immerse herself in Lizzie's life? Like getting a job at the diner where Lizzie worked and hanging out with Lizzie's boyfriend. After all, it's not as if he killed her-or did he?

Told with a unique voice that is both hilarious and heart-wrenching, Hawthorn's quest for proof may uncover the greatest truth is within herself.

Between the World and Me 25489625 “This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.

In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?

Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.]]>

<![CDATA[Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking]]> 8520610 The book that started the Quiet Revolution

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

Now with Extra Libris material, including a reader’s guide and bonus content.]]>

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was: a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn't just dangerous—it's a constant reminder of those Mac has lost, Da's death was hard enough, but now that her little brother is gone too, Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself may crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hard-won redemption.]]>

The Institute 43798285
In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is Stephen King's gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good versus evil in a world where the good guys don't always win.

Nimona 23131088 The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it "a deadpan epic."

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.]]>

Uprooted from the city, Violet Saunders doesn’t have much hope of fitting in at her new school in Four Paths, a town almost buried in the woodlands of rural New York. The fact that she’s descended from one of the town’s founders doesn’t help much, either—her new neighbours treat her with distant respect, and something very like fear. When she meets Justin, May, Isaac, and Harper, all children of founder families, and sees the otherworldly destruction they can wreak, she starts to wonder if the townsfolk are right to be afraid.

When bodies start to appear in the woods, the locals become downright hostile. Can the teenagers solve the mystery of Four Paths, and their own part in it, before another calamity strikes?]]>

<![CDATA[The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan]]> 44059557 CHINA, 484 A.D.

A Warrior in Disguise
All her life, Mulan has trained for one purpose: to win the duel that every generation in her family must fight. If she prevails, she can reunite a pair of priceless heirloom swords separated decades earlier, and avenge her father, who was paralyzed in his own duel.

Then a messenger from the Emperor arrives, demanding that all families send one soldier to fight the Rouran invaders in the north. Mulan's father cannot go. Her brother is just a child. So she ties up her hair, takes up her sword, and joins the army as a man.

A War for a Dynasty
Thanks to her martial arts skills, Mulan is chosen for an elite team under the command of the princeling--the royal duke's son, who is also the handsomest man she's ever seen. But the princeling has secrets of his own, which explode into Mulan's life and shake up everything she knows. As they cross the Great Wall to face the enemy beyond, Mulan and the princeling must find a way to unwind their past, unmask a traitor, and uncover the plans for the Rouran invasion . . . before it's too late.

Inspired by wuxia martial-arts dramas as well as the centuries-old ballad of Mulan, The Magnolia Sword is perfect for fans of Renee Ahdieh, Marie Lu, or Kristin Cashore--a thrilling, romantic, and sharp-edged novel that lives up to its beloved heroine.]]>

When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. OLD REVIEW:

"She had no idea what the future would hold for any of them, beyond possibilities as infinite as the stars.
And really, that was enough."

Wow... That's all I can say. That was one ride I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I did, I laughed out loud and cried and loved. And so many more things that doesn't happen as it much as it should when you read a book, and 'Starflight' managed to do all of it. I haven't shipped two characters this hard in a long time. And I have to admit my love for spoiled narcissistic rich boys and ass-kicking witty mechanics.

There were so many funny scenes throughout the book that I had to stop reading for a moment just to laugh and highlight them. This book was absolutely HILARIOUS, god it was amazing and my friends will never hear the end of it from me. I'm currently riding on the after-book high, and it hurts so much because the ending was a tad bit rushed. It could've been longer and maybe I wouldn't be feeling as depressed as I am now, or maybe the book was just that good. And I'll understand if people will not love it as much as I did; it's very lighthearted and has a perfectly slow burn romance. But those are my favorite kinds of books. Did I mention that it was hilarious, yet?

“Fine. You caught me. I guess there’s no use pretending anymore.
Doran settled in and waited for the punch line.
“I lured you onto this ship, she said, “because I couldn’t get enough of your scintillating personality.
There it was.
“Kiss me, Doran, she cried, flopping onto the mattress with one arm slung over her eyes and the other clutched to her breast. “I burn for you, hotter than a thousand hells.
He cocked his head to the side. “I think there’s an ointment for that.
“Desire like this can’t be tamed by medicine.

AND THEN WE HAVE SOLARA AND DORAN. MY PRECIOUSES. I love them so much and the way they banter with each other has me feeling so many emotions. I hope they don't remove their matching tattoos (them getting accidentally high was one of my favorite scenes.) I wanna talk about them more but words cannot describe the love I feel for these two.

This will most definitely be a book that I am going to reread (and reread a few more times after that) in the near future.]]>

Norse Mythology 37903770 This is an alternate cover edition for ISBN 9780393356182

Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose, these gods emerge with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.]]>

Slayer (Slayer, #1) 34723130
Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watcher’s Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard.]]>

<![CDATA[Leah on the Offbeat (Simonverse, #3)]]> 31180248 Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—takes center stage in this novel of first love and senior-year angst.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.]]>

Aeon Legion: Labyrinth 29910101
To protect the Edge of Time from the disastrous alterations of time travelers, the Aeon Legion seeks the greatest soldiers and warriors from the most bloody, war-torn eras in history. Those they deem worthy gain a chance to compete in the toughest training program ever designed.

Terra Mason, a plain eighteen-year-old girl from the modern United States, has an impressive stubborn streak. Her persistence and bravery gains the notice and sponsorship of one of the Aeon Legion's greatest heroines. Now Terra must turn that stubbornness into determination if she is to contend with history's finest soldiers and somehow pass the Aeon Legion's final test, the mysterious Labyrinth. She will not quit. Terra will prove that even someone as average as her can still be a heroine.

Hanns Speer is polite, good-natured, charming, a genius inventor of a time travel machine, and a dedicated member of the Nazi Party. Yet he cannot understand why people from the future regard him and his fellow Nazis as monsters. Now he must use his charisma and cunning to challenge the seemingly invincible Aeon Legion and its monopoly on time travel. He will not quit. Hanns will steal history itself if he has to, mistakenly believing it will prove him to be a hero.]]>

Unwind (Unwind, #1) 764347 Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state, is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. <![CDATA[Mistborn: The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)]]> 68428 What if the whole world were a dead, blasted wasteland?

Mistborn
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.

Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Then Kelsier reveals his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.

But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets. She will have to learn trust if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.

Brandon Sanderson, fantasy's newest master tale-spinner and author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the prophesied hero failed to defeat the Dark Lord? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises that begins with the book in your hands. Fantasy will never be the same again.]]>

Sasha Stone knows her place—first-chair clarinet, top of her class, and at the side of her Oxford-wearing boyfriend. She’s worked her entire life to ensure her path to Oberlin Conservatory as a star musician is perfectly paved.

But suddenly there’s a fork in the road in the shape of Isaac Harver. Her body shifts toward him when he walks by, and her skin misses his touch even though she’s never known it. Why does he act like he knows her so well—too well—when she doesn’t know him at all?

Sasha discovers that her by-the-book life began by ending the chapter of another: the twin sister she absorbed in the womb. But that doesn’t explain the gaps of missing time in her practice schedule, or the memories she has of things she certainly never did with Isaac.

Armed with the knowledge that her heart might not be hers alone, Sasha must decide what she’s willing to do—and who she’s willing to hurt—to take it back.]]>

Olivia Twist 34817232
Jack MacCarron rose from his place in London’s East End to become the adopted “nephew of a society matron. Little does society know that MacCarron is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his “aunt are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love.

Olivia Twist is an innovative reimagining of Charles Dickens classic tale Oliver Twist, in which Olivia was forced to live as a boy for her own safety until she was rescued from the streets. Now eighteen, Olivia finds herself at a crossroads: revealed secrets threaten to destroy the “proper life she has built for her herself, while newfound feelings for an arrogant young man she shouldn’t like could derail her carefully laid plans for the future.]]>

For my English class I was assigned to write a book review for a project, and so I chose this novel to critique (well, not really critique, more like professionally fangirl about) and I am not gonna write two reviews for one book because I'm lazy and I'm already behind on so many other reviews, and if I put my school review here it'd probably be self-plagiarism or something SO INSTEAD, I just made a brief list of things I loved and things I disliked about Scythe.

PROS :
+ THIS WAS SO GOOD. It was just generally so amazing to read?? I just want to thank the trees that were sacrificed in the making of this masterpiece. You will not be forgiven.
+ The characters and the character development were great, I loved how much I loved the characters that I wasn't supposed to love.
+ I even loved the antagonist.
+ Everyone was badass.
+ The whole 'come-to-the-dark-side' sub-plot was everything I never knew I needed.
+ THE PLOT. YES. MORALLY GOOD SCYTHES. YES. MORALLY BAD SCYTHES. YES.
+ The setting in which we are placed in is so distinctly unique. Despite having read so many dystopian novels in the past, this one still remains original.
+ There were so many other pros but I'm in the middle of class while writing this so I have to rush but PRAY THAT I DON'T GET CAUGHT PLEASE.

CONS :
+ Rowan and Citra should have stayed friends. Seriously.
+ The romance was boringggg.

The Picture of Dorian Gray 5297
In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind.]]>

Flame in the Mist is not so much a Mulan retelling, but morely inspired by the tale. It is set in Feudal Japan, which to many like myself, is a bait upon a hook that reels me in the moment I see the two words in the same sentence not to mention that Mulan is one of my all-time favorite Disney films and the songs are national anthem worthy.

Nevertheless I lowered my expectations. Considering the hate I had felt towards The Wrath and the Dawn I didn’t expect my feelings towards Renee Ahdieh’s newest duology to be any different, but I was pleasantly surprised towards my completion of the novel to find that I actually loved it. It had its flaws, undeniably, but it was a fun read looking back.

The novel follows Hattori Mariko on rout to meet her betrothed within the imperial palace, a man she has never met. But as her convoy passes through a deeply secluded forest they are attacked by the Black Clan, a group of bandits hired to kill her. She escapes dressed as a boy. From there she begins to weave a plot of revenge towards those who dared target her and harm her people.

‘Tranquil as a forest

if ya’ll didn’t sing smh

The pretentiousness level of the writing was almost akin to The Fault in Our Stars. It was good, yes, but some lines just made me choke at times. In a good way, I guess. The dialogue was a bit off at times, and the writing in general tended to be dry at other times, but it didn’t take anything away from the readability of it.

“She remembered Chiyo telling her that finding one's match was like finding one's other half. Mariko had never understood the notion.
She was not a half. She was wholly her own.

I personally loved the characters though I know quite a few who found them lack-luster. The romance was nothing remarkable, and the plot wasn’t groundbreaking (maybe a result from my addiction to reading books similar to these), but the plot-twist definitely got to me. Or maybe I’m just dumb for not figuring it out in the first place, oh well.

In conclusion, I highly recommend reading this book, especially those interested in diving into a world such as this.]]>

<![CDATA[BloodLust (Rise of the Iliri, #1)]]> 29457229 It’s a treacherous road to belonging—and once you find it, you could lose everything.

In an exotic world caught in the throes of a seemingly endless war, a nation of terrorists under the thumb of an evil Emperor has set out to systematically destroy every race but their own. And they’re just about to succeed. Lauded fantasy author Auryn Hadley (The Demons Muse romantic fantasy series) compellingly blends heart-stopping action-adventure, heart-breaking ethics, and toe-curling sensuality, all through the lens of a Daenerys Targaryen-esque lead—the likes of which the fantasy genre hasn’t yet seen.

When you were once a slave, freed only to become a ruthless warrior, "belonging" seems a trite concept. A pipe dream, the stuff of naive fairy tales. But not for Salryc Luxx. Private Luxx—Sal for short—is iliri, a member of an untamable race surreptitiously dubbed "their kind" by humans and bred thousands of years ago to protect them. Humans consider them expendable, barely more than animals. Freaks. But in a karmic twist of fate, they’re also one of mankind’s most feared predators. Abused and enslaved, the only control Sal has over her life is what military unit she serves with if she's good enough to be accepted and the only one to consider her is the best in the land, the Black Blades.

Everyone has secrets, and the Blades are no different. But acceptance into the Blades gives Sal something she never expected—the family she’s never had, and with it, the undying protection of seven of the greatest warriors the world has ever seen. It also gifts her a devoted line of potential mates. Many of her fellow warriors will submit to the bloodlust that overtakes her in the heat of battle and can only be quenched by rough, passionate lovemaking (making way for the steamiest of love scenes). Though it’s not all war and sex. Sal very gradually cultivates deeply loving, evolving relationships with each of the Black Blades, which morphs as a unit into a reverse harem as sweet as it is fierce, and as protective as it is impassioned.

But belonging has its own price. Each of the Blades would die to protect Sal. And it’s only a matter of time before the enemy moves to use this against her.Author Hadley has crafted a unique epic fantasy—and an absolute roller coaster of emotions. Her heroine, Sal, is as loving as she is ferocious, and the demons she battles—and the way she beats them—underlie a delicate exploration of the ethical and political battles we face in every war we fight. Hadley’s clever takes on racial prejudice are subtle, yet damning—and her idea of sexual politics is a rip-roaring turn-on. Every female reader will want to be Sal and every male, like the guys in the book, will fall for her.

The first book in the Rise of the Iliri series. BloodLust does not end with a cliffhanger. It does contain adult themes, thus may not be suitable for younger readers.]]>

Are you telling me that this is a story about Batman and:
a.) he never wore his batsuit, man bat but no batsuit? Okay.
b.) this story isn't even a tiny bit dark? Bats live in the dark, and this wasn't even near a shade of black.
c.) and when they told me this was an origin story, I didn't expect to go this way back. It felt more like an origin story to the origin story.

I loved Wonderwoman: Warbringer (and of course ya girl, Leigh Bardugo, never disappoints) so going into the first chapter I was filled with expectations that I had to bat down like incessant flies. I can't really surmise my exact feelings regarding this book. While I did enjoy it at some parts, and dug a grave because of boredom during others, I didn't hate it but I did kind of like it.

I don't know, feelings are confusing, which is why I spend all my time reading books and watching shows. Case in point. Speaking of confusing feelings the romance in this book. Don't you love a murderer? But it's okay, though! Because she's pretty!! And she's most likely not a murderer anyway, so hoo-rah!!!

To be perfectly candor, I didn't really care for the rest of the side characters, I did like the adults but Bruce's friends? Eh. You don't get to know them long enough to really give a shit about them. But, Bruce Wayne on the other hand? My bbb. I'd like to officially announce that he is a Gryffindor. Marie Lu needs to canon that real quick, because who else but a Gryffindor would sacrifice their life numerous times for people they don't know or care about and not for glory or fame?
And I'd never forgot my favorite Alfred, who seriously needs a book of his own. Please.

<![CDATA[The Bird and the Sword (The Bird and the Sword Chronicles, #1)]]> 29008738 Swallow, Daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heav’n or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, Daughter. Stay alive.

The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky.

My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.

But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a bird?]]>

Look: Poems 26114310 Look, asks us to see the ongoing costs of war as the unbearable losses of human lives and also the insidious abuses against our everyday speech. In this virtuosic array of poems, lists, shards, and sequences, Sharif assembles her family’s and her own fragmented narratives in the aftermath of warfare. Those repercussions echo into the present day, in the grief for those killed, in America’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and in the discriminations endured at the checkpoints of daily encounter.

At the same time, these poems point to the ways violence is conducted against our language. Throughout this collection are words and phrases lifted from the Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms; in their seamless inclusion, Sharif exposes the devastating euphemisms deployed to sterilize the language, control its effects, and sway our collective resolve. But Sharif refuses to accept this terminology as given, and instead turns it back on its perpetrators. “Let it matter what we call a thing, she writes. “Let me look at you.”]]>

At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children.

Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.

The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart—if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey . . .]]>

This was a highly anticipated read for me. As soon as I saw the summary I knew that it'd be a book that I'd have fun with. I love the dynamic of a rag-tag squad of unlikely randoms going on an adventure together to try to stop a war. Plus points if it's roadtrip-esque.

But unfortunately, this book didn't reach my expectations. A tip to all: never give in to the hype. Not to say that this book was bad, just that it was ehh. With all the raving reviews of how "funny" and "great" this book was, it had made me too excited which lead to greater disappointment.

Our cast of characters were fairly likable. I really liked Jax and Lyriana (especially towards the ending). But where was the kickass group of friends I was promised?? That was probably the biggest disappointment. And not to mention the insta-love. [spoilers removed]

There were a lot of boring parts in this book, especially towards the half-way point. But the ending saved the entire book for me. Those last chapters had me flipping through pages so quickly. (I cried a bit too ngl.)

I'll most likely not read the next book, though I'm content with how this one ends. It's open yet final.]]>

And while this starts out as a light hearted contemporary about fandom and geekness it also delves into issues like anxiety and depression.

“I'm so tired. I'm tired of anxiety that twists my stomach so hard I can't move the rest of my body. Tired of constant vigilance. Tired of wanting to do something about myself, but always taking easy way out.

I liked Eliza (a majority of the time), and I'm sure many can relate to her introvertedness. Wallace, on the other hand; I liked him until he became an asshole. I personally believe that they shouldn't have ended up together. But as this was a YA contemporary, of course they would, even if they had no chemistry whatsoever.

But I did like this book in general, minus the romance (what knocked off a star for me) and this is one you can binge in a day. I got into it fast and finished it just as quick.

<![CDATA[The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1)]]> 34379720
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of eighteenth-century Cairo, she's a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by--palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing--are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive.

But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she's forced to reconsider her beliefs. For Dara tells Nahri an extraordinary tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire and rivers where the mythical marid sleep, past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises and mountains where the circling birds of prey are more than what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass--a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In Daevabad, within gilded brass walls laced with enchantments and behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments run deep. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, her arrival threatens to ignite a war that has been simmering for centuries.

Spurning Dara's warning of the treachery surrounding her, she embarks on a hesitant friendship with Alizayd, an idealistic prince who dreams of revolutionizing his father's corrupt regime. All too soon, Nahri learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say to be careful what you wish for . . .]]>
