Che Mark Lawrence sia un autore che scrive bene e che sappia il fatto suo è indubbio, ma questo finale è andato decisamente "off tracks". Mi piacerebbe recuperare altre trilogie precedenti ma se dovessero essere gestite come questa, lascio stare.
L'epilogo mi ha strappato una lacrimuccia però le restanti 300 pagine non mi hanno detto nulla con il fulcro della storia che si concentra nelle ultime 40 pagine risultando affrettatissimo. E in tutto questo non ci viene nemmeno spiegato come funziona la biblioteca XD

Avete presente Avatar, il film con le creature blu? Ecco, questo romanzo mi ha subito ricordato questo film per i motivi che troverete sotto, solo che invece delle creature alte e blu, qui abbiamo delle creature piccole e verdi.

Questo romanzo non è una storia vera e propria, ma la rappresentazione di un contesto che trascende il genere della fantascienza: un contesto che come era attuale sessant'anni fa lo è ancora tutt'oggi.
Gli uomini sulla Terra hanno sterminato le foreste e non hanno più legna, così colonizzano Athse, un pianeta abitato da un popolo natio pacifico, per abbattere le loro foreste e trasportare il legno sul pianeta degli umani.
[Non vi ricorda la conversione delle foreste tropicali in aree agricole per coltivare olio di palma e soia destinata a mangimi per gli animali da allevamento che avviene tuttora in Indonesia e in Brasile?]
Qui, seguiamo Davidson, un militare psicopatico e violento, Lyubov, un antropologo inviata a documentare la popolazione indigena e Selver, un indigeno che, dopo essere stato maltrattato da Davidson, diventa un punto di riferimento per la resistenza contro gli umani.

Questo libro è un manifesto amaro contro il colonialismo, lo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali e delle persone, nonché contro guerra e la pace. Ci sono stati momenti che mi hanno fatto male, perché l'autrice è stata capace, secondo me, di creare delle situazioni che mi fanno riflettere ed entrare in empatia con la sofferenza causata dalla violenza. D'altro canto, non sono riuscita ad apprezzare questo libro appieno come avrei sperato perché avrei avuto bisogno di più tensione narrativa nella storia e dei personaggi delineati in modo più approfondito. Come accennato sopra, il libro mi è sembrato più una fotografia che una storia, una rappresentazione di un contesto. I personaggi sono caratterizzati dai loro dialoghi e dalle loro azioni, in modo sufficiente rispetto allo spazio a disposizione, ma non sono riuscita ad affezionarmi a loro quanto avrei voluto (ad esclusione di Davidson, ovviamente).

Consigliato se cercate un breve libro che vi faccia riflettere e che trascenda qualunque genere. Vi lascio con una semi-citazione: per gli Athseani la parola del loro pianeta Athse significa "foresta" nella nostra lingua, da cui il titolo in inglese.

You know Avatar, the film with the blue creatures? Well, this novel immediately reminded me of this film for the reasons you will find below, only instead of tall, blue creatures, here we have small, green creatures.

This novel is not an actual story, but a depiction of a context that transcends the science fiction genre: a context that as relevant as it was sixty years ago is still relevant today.
The humans on Earth have exterminated the forests and have no wood left, so they colonise Athse, a planet inhabited by a peaceful native people, to cut down their forests and transport the wood to the planet of the humans.
[Doesn't this remind you of the conversion of tropical forests into agricultural areas to grow palm oil and soya for animal feed that is still happening in Indonesia and Brazil?]
Here, we follow Davidson, a psychopathic and violent military man, Lyubov, an anthropologist sent to document the indigenous population, and Selver, an indigenous creature who, after being mistreated by Davidson, becomes a focal point for resistance against humans.

This book is a bitter manifesto against colonialism, exploitation of natural resources and people, and against war and peace. There were moments that hurt me because the author was able, in my opinion, to create situations that made me think and empathise with the suffering caused by violence. On the other hand, I was not able to enjoy this book as fully as I would have hoped because I would have needed more narrative tension in the story and the characters delineated in more depth. As mentioned above, the book felt more like a photograph than a story, a representation of a context. The characters are characterised by their dialogue and actions, sufficiently in relation to the number of pages available, but I was not able to get as attached to them as I would have liked (with the exception of Davidson, of course).

Recommended if you are looking for a short book that makes you think and transcends any genre. I leave you with a semi-quote: for the Athseans, the word for their planet Athse means ‘forest� in our language, hence the title in English.

Qualche breve pensiero buttato giù: Bella la complessità, il mondo vivido, i complotti giganti come una casa, ma i personaggi rimangono a malincuore troppo sfumati per i miei gusti.

Questo romanzo è ambientato in un'Europa alternativa con creature soprannaturali, disordini politici e crimine che fanno da sfondo. La storia si svolge in una città simile a una Londra degli anni '20 e segue le vicende di un cast di personaggi diverso: Demetrius, un avvocato vampiro che lavora all'Alleanza delle Nazioni Unite; Hades Cronus, un gangster ma anche un essere soprannaturale sul cui conto sappiamo poco, ma che sembra essere il diavolo in persona; Gabriella, una giornalista; Alice, una ragazza dal passato difficile. La storia inizia quando il Senato è in procinto di approvare una legge sulla parità tra umani e vampiri e Demetrius si ritrova a dover indagare su un omicidio, convinto che i due eventi siano collegati.

Questo libro mi ha preso dalla prima pagina, grazie a una posta in gioco sempre molto alta, a un ritmo incalzante e ai personaggi ai quali è impossibile non affezionarsi. I capitoli sono molto brevi (siano lodati i capitoli brevi!) e finiscono sul più bello, invogliandomi ad andare continuamente avanti. La trama non dà un attimo di tregua e i colpi di scena si susseguono uno dopo l'altro. La storia parte come un murder mystery, ma evolve molto presto in una serie di intrighi politici e interessi personali dei personaggi. Questo ritmo è reso ancora più incalzante dal multi-POV, che ci permette di cambiare prospettiva ogni capitolo, dando così tanta dinamicità alla narrazione.

I personaggi mi sono entrati nel cuore. Li ho trovati ben delineati, ognuno con una voce distinta, e vorrei sapere TUTTO su di loro, anche se non posso negare di avere un debole per Hades e Demetrius. Nella prima parte ci sono più capitoli dal punto di vista di Demetrius, mentre nella seconda parte trovano più spazio i personaggi femminili come Gabriella e Alice. Se Hades è un personaggio misterioso con una sua agenda, Demetrius non è il tipico vampiro alfa, bensì una creatura sensibile e tenera. Molto interessante è stato anche lo sviluppo di Gabriella, con i suoi capitoli ricchi di dubbi e ansie.

Quando ho girato l'ultima pagina, il libro mi ha lasciato con un sacco di domande in testa che spero trovino una spiegazione nel prossimo libro. This book grabbed me from the first page, thanks to consistently high stakes, a fast pace and characters you can't help but root for. The chapters are very short (praise the short chapters!) and end on a high note, keeping me wanting to read more. The plot never slows down and the twists and turns keep coming. The story begins as a murder mystery, but very soon becomes a series of political intrigues and personal interests of the characters. This pace becomes even more engaging by the multi-POV, which allows us to change perspectives.

The characters stole my heart. I found them well-drawn, each with a distinct voice, and I wanted to know EVERYTHING about them, although I cannot deny that I have a soft spot for Hades and Demetrius. In the first part there are more chapters from Demetrius' point of view, while in the second part there is more space for female characters like Gabriella and Alice. If Hades is a mysterious character with his own agenda, Demetrius is not the typical alpha vampire, but a sensitive and kind being. Also very interesting was the development of Gabriella, with her chapters full of doubts and fears.

When I turned the last page, the book left me with a lot of questions, which hopefully will find an explanation in the next book. However, I would have liked the author to elaborate a bit more on certain parts of the narrative arc of this book and to explore the antagonist and her motivations more deeply.

I really appreciated the vivid and effective, sometimes graphic, style. The setting is very detailed, such as the clothes, the furniture, the music and the cars, and the author managed to make me like an era that is not one of my favourites.

This debut turned out to be solid and a great mix of elements from different genres, such as urban fantasy, thriller and dark elements, which worked very well. I loved it, it gave me what I was looking for in an urban fantasy and now I can't wait to read the sequel! Recommended for those who like gothic atmospheres, political intrigue and want to keep wondering who they can trust.

Questo romanzo è ambientato in un'Europa alternativa con creature soprannaturali, disordini politici e crimine che fanno da sfondo. La storia si svolge in una città simile a una Londra degli anni '20 e segue le vicende di un cast di personaggi diverso: Demetrius, un avvocato vampiro che lavora all'Alleanza delle Nazioni Unite; Hades Cronus, un gangster ma anche un essere soprannaturale sul cui conto sappiamo poco, ma che sembra essere il diavolo in persona; Gabriella, una giornalista; Alice, una ragazza dal passato difficile. La storia inizia quando il Senato è in procinto di approvare una legge sulla parità tra umani e vampiri e Demetrius si ritrova a dover indagare su un omicidio, convinto che i due eventi siano collegati.

Questo libro mi ha preso dalla prima pagina, grazie a una posta in gioco sempre molto alta, a un ritmo incalzante e ai personaggi ai quali è impossibile non affezionarsi. I capitoli sono molto brevi (siano lodati i capitoli brevi!) e finiscono sul più bello, invogliandomi ad andare continuamente avanti. La trama non dà un attimo di tregua e i colpi di scena si susseguono uno dopo l'altro. La storia parte come un murder mystery, ma evolve molto presto in una serie di intrighi politici e interessi personali dei personaggi. Questo ritmo è reso ancora più incalzante dal multi-POV, che ci permette di cambiare prospettiva ogni capitolo, dando così tanta dinamicità alla narrazione.

I personaggi mi sono entrati nel cuore. Li ho trovati ben delineati, ognuno con una voce distinta, e vorrei sapere TUTTO su di loro, anche se non posso negare di avere un debole per Hades e Demetrius. Nella prima parte ci sono più capitoli dal punto di vista di Demetrius, mentre nella seconda parte trovano più spazio i personaggi femminili come Gabriella e Alice. Se Hades è un personaggio misterioso con una sua agenda, Demetrius non è il tipico vampiro alfa, bensì una creatura sensibile e tenera. Molto interessante è stato anche lo sviluppo di Gabriella, con i suoi capitoli ricchi di dubbi e ansie.

Quando ho girato l'ultima pagina, il libro mi ha lasciato con un sacco di domande in testa che spero trovino una spiegazione nel prossimo libro. Dalle premesse mi aspettavo un fantasy epico per adulti con un focus psicologico sullo sviluppo dei personaggi. Sebbene abbia visto degli spunti in cui l'autore ha inserito e gestito alcuni degli aspetti psicologici, mi è sembrato un'accozzaglia di elementi gestiti in modo così superficiale e frettoloso che non sono riuscita a immergermi nella narrazione. lo stile, molto semplice, ha un tono da YA. anche gli eventi narrati sembrano molto affrettati e gestiti in modo superficiale. I am very sorry to say that this was a DNF for me. In the middle of a dialogue, there would be a digression about a character's clothes or a description of the interior of the palace. When the description was over, I had to go back to the question in the conversation because I had forgotten what it was about. When new characters are introduced, we get a digression about their past, present and future intentions. I found this to be tedious and unnecessary.
Also, I couldn't connect with the protagonist, Neema, who I didn't find very well portrayed, because of the over-telling; we're constantly told who she is, how she should behave to fit in with what people expect of her faction, how she should dress. I also found the dialogue uninteresting. I pushed myself to read a chapter, but I was not curious to read on, I closed the book and picked it up the next day and pushed myself again, with the same results, until I reached 30% and decided to abandon it because there was nothing left to keep me going.

Ha un world building spettacolare, non sto neanche a parlarvene perché mi servirebbero giorni per farvelo apprezzare. Ha una trama e degli intrighi ben congegnati e i personaggi sono ben delineati. Sono personaggi dinamici: evolvono nel corso della trilogia, cambiano, si mettono in discussione ed è ciò che più mi piace dei libri dei libri di Sanderson, [spoilers removed].
Difetti:

La sensazione è quella che di non arrivare mai a una risoluzione dei fatti, di una stasi. Mi ritrovo a sbatacchiare il libro dicendo: "dai, su! voglio sapere, ma non è questo che voglio sapere".
Secondo me, con una duologia bella giotta oppure tre libri un po' più brevi, avrebbe una trilogia perfetta.

Martin è senza dubbio un bravissimo scrittore.
Delinea i personaggi in modo cosi dettagliato che sembrano veri, umani, con i loro pregi e difetti, doppiogiochisti, onorevoli, orgogliosi o umili. Ti ci fa affezionare o te li fa odiare, ma come se fossero persone, quindi quello che sta simpatico a me può non stare simpatico ad un altro e via discorrendo. Di questo libro mi è piaciuto quasi tutto, in primis la scrittura o lo stile, per intenderci. Ciò che non mi è piaciuto non sono le morti che già sapevo perché ho visto la serie TV (anche se fino all'ultimo speravo che non accadessero), bensì i POV di alcuni personaggi prettamente noiosi o paranoici. Tutto cio, però, lo considero relativo. Mi spiego: anche in quei capitoli dove mi sono rotta le scatole succedeva qualcosa o veniva spiegato qualcosa di importante, infatti per questo li ho apprezzati. Ciò che mi ha fatto tentare il suicidio più volte è il modo in cui alcuni personaggi metabolizzano gli eventi (avete visto che sono veri? Vi prego, ditemi che non sono l'unica a pensarlo). Ad esempio, Sansa! Spero che si dia una bella svegliata prima o poi perché è tutta un "Joffrey mi ama e anche la regina mi ama" oppure "ripeti a memori tutto quello che ti hanno insegnato a dire in queste situazioni". Martin è senza dubbio un bravissimo scrittore.
Delinea i personaggi in modo cosi dettagliato che sembrano veri, umani, con i loro pregi e difetti, doppiogiochisti, onorevoli, orgogliosi o umili. Ti ci fa affezionare o te li fa odiare, ma come se fossero persone, quindi quello che sta simpatico a me può non stare simpatico ad un altro e via discorrendo. Di questo libro mi è piaciuto quasi tutto, in primis la scrittura o lo stile, per intenderci. Ciò che non mi è piaciuto non sono le morti che già sapevo perché ho visto la serie TV (anche se fino all'ultimo speravo che non accadessero), bensì i POV di alcuni personaggi prettamente noiosi o paranoici. Tutto cio, però, lo considero relativo. Mi spiego: anche in quei capitoli dove mi sono rotta le scatole succedeva qualcosa o veniva spiegato qualcosa di importante, infatti per questo li ho apprezzati. Ciò che mi ha fatto tentare il suicidio più volte è il modo in cui alcuni personaggi metabolizzano gli eventi (avete visto che sono veri? Vi prego, ditemi che non sono l'unica a pensarlo). Ad esempio, Sansa! Spero che si dia una bella svegliata prima o poi perché è tutta un "Joffrey mi ama e anche la regina mi ama" oppure "ripeti a memori tutto quello che ti hanno insegnato a dire in queste situazioni". Oppure Catelyn! Miiiii! "Devo essere una Stark". I personaggi che dicono questo tipo di frasi ("devo comportarmi da...devo dimostrare di essere qui, là e insà") mi stanno sulle balle. Nel complesso mi è piaciuto molto e sicuramente voglio andare avanti per sapere COME succede ciò che succederà alla fine (che ci viene raccontato nelle prime righe del libro).
Caratterizzazione molto approfondita: Hadrian mi è entrato dentro all'anima e grazie a ciò ho sopportato difetti che altrimenti mi avrebbero fatto abbandonare il libro.
Libro molto riflessivo e un po' filosofico.

Ho fatto fatica ad entrare nella storia all'inizio a causa dei salti temporali e di tanti termini di worldbuilding utilizzati. Lo stile non è dei più semplici per me, non scorre bene e risulta a volte troppo pretenzioso. Per me avrebbe funzionato con un po' di snellimento. Dall'altro lato gli devo riconoscere che è riuscito a creare delle scene molto cinematografiche donando loro quella tensione necessaria da farmi rimanere appiccicata alle pagine con l'ansia di sapere cosa sarebbe successo.

Worldbuilding molto ricco con elementi presi in prestito di qua e di là: società di stampo feudale con elementi dell'antica Roma e Grecia, richiami ad opere classiche e di fantascienza come Dune e Star Wars. Per me è stato un miscuglio che grazie all'aggiunta di elementi originali è stato in grado di stare su da solo e mi è piaciuto molto. Apprezzo molto la scoperta di altre culture e altre specie, e la presenza di istituzioni religiose simili all'inquisizione della Chiesa (qui Cappellania - Chantry). Con questo libro sono stata investita da questi due aspetti e che sono stati gestiti e approfonditi bene. Nonostante questo worldbuilding denso, non ho mai avuto la sensazione di essere appesantita da inutili info-dump, ma di avere la quantità di info che mi servono per capire e proseguire la lettura con un bel feeling.

La trama scorre molto lentamente soprattutto nella parte centrale, tra il 30% e il 60%, pero viene dato spazio a dialoghi vibranti e ben pensati che mi hanno fatto percepire i personaggi secondari come più vividi di altri libri.

Il finale secondo me è stato un po' troppo conveniente e gestito in maniera leggermente brusca e affrettata, ad esempio [spoilers removed]

Un paio di note prima di scrivere una recensione sensata.

Nel complesso mi è piaciuto molto e sicuramente voglio andare avanti per sapere COME succede ciò che succederà alla fine (che ci viene raccontato nelle prime righe del libro).

Ambientato in una Germania medievale fittizia, seguiamo le vicende di Mirianne, una ragazzina di 12 anni e figlia di uno scorticatore, col suo amico carbonaio Brejo, e Jardun, un giovane soldato della guardia cittadina. Ci si aggiunge anche il fantastico alchimista Kronarius, col suo amabile pesce di nome Sprudel. Ho apprezzato molto l'ambientazione e l'ordinarietà sia dei personaggi sia delle situazioni e delle vicende.

Ho apprezzato molto anche lo stile: frizzante e ironico. Mi ha davvero fatte ridere in più di una occasione. Quello che invece non mi ha soddisfatto nel modo di scrivere è che sembra a tratti infantile e indirizzato a bambini, nonostante alcune descrizioni crude. Inoltre, mi se è sembrato di leggere tante pagine di "nulla" e non sono riuscita ad empatizzare con i personaggi. Ho approcciato questo audiolibro seguendo i pareri entusiasti che ho letto, nonostante la premessa non mi abbia dato un'idea chiara di cosa aspettarmi.

Ambientato in una Germania medievale fittizia, seguiamo le vicende di Mirianne, una ragazzina di 12 anni e figlia di uno scorticatore, col suo amico carbonaio Brejo, e Jardun, un giovane soldato della guardia cittadina. Ci si aggiunge anche il fantastico alchimista Kronarius, col suo amabile pesce di nome Sprudel. Ho apprezzato molto l'ambientazione e l'ordinarietà sia dei personaggi sia delle situazioni e delle vicende.

Ho apprezzato molto anche lo stile: frizzante e ironico. Mi ha davvero fatte ridere in più di una occasione. Quello che invece non mi ha soddisfatto nel modo di scrivere è che sembra a tratti infantile e indirizzato a bambini, nonostante alcune descrizioni crude. Inoltre, mi se è sembrato di leggere tante pagine di "nulla" e non sono riuscita ad empatizzare con i personaggi. Consigliato se si è alla ricerca di un fantasy leggero e senza pretese.
