The Case for Trump 215367567 A New York Times bestseller and “a brilliant and bracing analysis (Mark R. Levin) of Donald Trump, his presidency, and his vision of America’s future—now updated for 2024

In The Case for Trump, award-winning historian and political commentator Victor Davis Hanson explains how a celebrity businessman with no political or military experience triumphed over sixteen well-qualified Republican rivals, a Democrat with a quarter-billion-dollar war chest, and a hostile media and Washington establishment to become an extremely successful president.

Trump alone saw a political opportunity in defending the working people of America’s interior whom the coastal elite of both parties had come to scorn, Hanson argues. And Trump alone had the instincts and energy to pursue this opening to victory, dismantle a corrupt old order, and bring long-overdue policy changes at home and abroad. After decades of drift, America needed the outsider Trump to do what normal politicians would not and could not do.

Now updated for the 2024 election with a comprehensive new introduction, this is the essential book on what Donald Trump means for America.]]>

<![CDATA[Running Home to Shadows: Memories of TV's First Supernatural Soap from Today's Grown-Up Kids (Memories from Today's Grown-Up Kids)]]> 60768379 School’s out, Barnabas is IN!

They were a generation all their own, the army of children who ran home from school to watch Dark Shadows, TV’s very first supernatural soap. A breed apart, they set aside the worship of mundane pop stars to follow vampires, witches, and werewolves. From 1966 to 1971, they were daytime Monster Kids…and today they have stories to tell.

Writer-editor Jim Beard has gathered these grown-up kids together in this tome to tell those tales. Their experiences are sometimes tragic and terrifying, yet also uplifting and inspirational, but above all, Dark Shadows touched them so deeply as to leave an indelible impression on their lives that lasts to this day.

Return to Collinwood to brave the stormy nights and rainswept days of yore to listen to this coven of writers spin yarns of childhood encounters with Barnabas, Angelique, Quentin, Vicky, Maggie, and their compatriots. Cross the threshold of the Old House, take a seat by the crackling fire, and make yourself comfortable to the strains of maudlin music issuing forth from the gramophone—the ghosts of the past are about to arise in RUNNING HOME TO SHADOWS. Won’t you join us?

Blood on the Moon 122841050 Blood on the Moon. The comingling of the Western genre and the noir style crystalized in this extraordinary film, in turn influencing Westerns in the 1950s to become darker and more psychological. Produced during the height of the post-World War II film noir movement, Blood on the Moon is a classic Western immersed in the film noir netherworld of double crosses, government corruption, shabby barrooms, gun-toting goons, and romantic betrayals. With this volume, biographer and noir expert Alan K. Rode brings the film to life for a new generation of readers and film lovers.

ACCLAIM
A first-rate look at an undervalued movie that represents a noted Western author (Luke Short), a talented screenwriter (Lillie Hayward), a director who was just coming into his own (Robert Wise), and a star on the ascendence (Robert Mitchum). Conservatism: A Rediscovery 60491288
The award-winning political theorist Yoram Hazony argues that the best hope for Western democracy is a return to the empiricist, religious, and nationalist traditions of America and Britain—the conservative traditions that brought greatness to the English-speaking nations and became the model for national freedom for the entire world.

A Rediscovery explains how Anglo-American conservatism became a distinctive alternative to divine-right monarchy, Puritan theocracy, and liberal revolution. After tracing the tradition from the Wars of the Roses to Burke and across the Atlantic to the American Federalists and Lincoln, Hazony describes the rise and fall of Enlightenment liberalism after World War II and the present-day debates between neoconservatives and national conservatives over how to respond to liberalism and the woke left.

Going where no political thinker has gone in decades, Hazony provides a fresh theoretical foundation for conservatism. Rejecting the liberalism of Hayek, Strauss, and the "fusionists"of the 1960s, and drawing on decades of personal experience in the conservative movement, he argues that a revival of authentic Anglo-American conservatism is possible in the twenty-first century.]]>

<![CDATA[Write Your Novel From the Middle: A New Approach for Plotters, Pantsers and Everyone in Between]]> 48645110
What's the best way to write a "next level" novel? Some writers start at the beginning and let the story unfold without a plan. They are called "pantsers," because they write by the "seat of the pants."

Other writers plan and outline and know the ending before they start. These are the "plotters."

The two sides never seem to agree with each other on the best approach.

But what if it's not the beginning or the end that is the key to a successful book? What if, amazing as it may seem, the place to begin writing your novel is in the very middle of the story?

According to #1 bestselling writing teacher James Scott Bell, that's exactly where you'll find your story's heart and heat. Bell's "Mirror Moment" is the secret, and its power is available to any writer, at any stage of the writing process.

Bringing together years of craft study and personal discovery, Bell presents a truly unique approach to writing a novel, one that will stand the test of time and serve you all your writing life.

"I need three things before I tackle a new novel: Diet Coke, a laptop, and my dog-eared copies of James Scott Bell's books on writing craft!”- Kami Garcia, #1 NYT Times & International Bestselling author]]>

“Even from my first read, I thought the Aeneid was one of those classic works that read like an adventure novel. Lisa

“Dryden’s translation of The Aeneid remains an unmatched achievement. A. E Stallings, The American Scholar

“The “Aeneid is suffused with a fascinating, upending sense that most of what goes gravely wrong on earth isn’t imputable to human agency. There’s something comforting to Virgil’s conception of humanity, in which relatively little malice and unreasonableness and rapacity seem innate to our kind. And there’s something unsettling as well a vision of a world that would be safer and more secure if only the heavens were emptied. Brad Leithauser NY Times

“The epic song of wars and men. If blood, guts and epic poetry are you thing, this book is for you. Punning

THE AENEID is Virgil’s masterpiece in a specially produced edition with beautiful images which will take you right into the epic heart of Aeneas’s legendary journey and The Trojan War.

Many mine fires have occurred on the Lake Superior iron ranges during the past 25 years. Some of them have resulted in serious loss of life and property. Certain operators, especially those who have experienced losses, realize the danger of underground fires and have adopted preventive and protective measures. There are others, how ever, who have not given the matter much thought, or who do not appreciate the necessity of special precautions for protecting their mines against fire. This feeling of safety is caused by the fact that many of the mines have had no fires during periods of 20 to 30 years. The purpose of this paper is to awaken the operator to the ever present danger of fire underground. Most of the suggestions regard ing prevention and protection are old and well known, and although some of them are at present in use, there are still a great number of mines provided with little or no protection.]]>

<![CDATA[Rising Sun Victorious: The Alternate History of How the Japanese won the Pacific War]]> 4183018 â British Army Review

In war, victory can be held hostage to seemingly insignificant incidentsâ chance events, opportunities seized or cast asideâ that can derail the most brilliant military strategies and change the course of history. What if the Japanese had conquered India and driven out the British? What if the strategic link between the United States and Australia had been severed? What if Vice Admiral Nagumo had launched a third attack on Pearl Harbor? What if the U.S. Navyâ s gamble at Midway had backfired?

Ten leading military historians ask these and other questions in this fascinating book. The war with Japan was rife with difficult choices and battles that could have gone either way. These fact-based alternate scenarios offer intriguing insights into what might have happened in the Pacific during World War II, and what the consequences would have been for America.

review:
I have read this in paper and now I am rereading it again on Audible (second time with that), and I am loving it again. I don't quite understand some of the negative reviews, except that it's very helpful for me to realize that there's always a great spectrum of opinions. There are among the minority of negative reviews, people who said that this particular volume in the great saga, is boring. I didn't find it so. But perhaps that's because I'm a nerd, and I love origin stories, which this certainly is one. Or two. Or three. Depending on how you look at it. Jonathan Davis, may he rest in peace, and may his memory and work always be a blessing, does a great job of reading this in the Audible version, plus it has a great introduction written and read by Neil Gaiman, who I believe oversaw this entire Audible original release. For me, when it comes to sword and sorcery fantasy, there is nothing better than Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

The capos and their women, the button-men, the soldiers, the enforcers, their secret connections, their appalling power-- The sensational novel plunges you headlong into a fascinating world of power, passion and corruption.

They were older and richer than the FBI. Their vast payroll included U.S. Senators, judges, members of congress and police officials. With their concentration of money and power in seven key cities, they could almost swing a presidential election. For years they had been inching their way toward total power. Now they were on the verge of taking over the whole country.

<![CDATA[The Wizard Knight: Comprising The Knight and The Wizard]]> 54119284
A novel in two volumes, The Wizard Knight is in the rare company of works of fantasy like The Once and Future King, or The Wizard of Earthsea, that drink directly from the wellspring of myth. Now it appears in a single-volume edition for the first time.

A young man in his teens is transported from our world to a magical realm consisting of seven levels of reality. Transformed by magic into a grown man of heroic proportions, he takes the name Sir Able of the High Heart and sets out on a quest to find the sword that has been promised to him, the blade that will help him fulfill his ambition to become a true hero—a true knight.

Inside, however, Sir Able remains a boy, and he must grow in every sense to survive what lies ahead...

“[Wolfe] should enjoy the same rapt attention we afford to Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, and Cormac McCarthy. The Washington Post on The Knight

“Wolfe’s version of Faerie is both allusive and elusive, beautiful and fatally glamorous. —Tad Williams on The Knight

With a new introduction by Yves Meynard, acclaimed author of The Book of Knights.

Quicksilver 58107989
Quinn Quicksilver was born a mystery―abandoned at three days old on a desert highway in Arizona. Raised in an orphanage, never knowing his parents, Quinn had a happy if unexceptional life. Until the day of “strange magnetism. It compelled him to drive out to the middle of nowhere. It helped him find a coin worth a lot of money. And it practically saved his life when two government agents showed up in the diner in pursuit of him. Now Quinn is on the run from those agents and who knows what else, fleeing for his life.

During a shoot-out at a forlorn dude ranch, he finally meets his destined companions: Bridget Rainking, a beauty as gifted in foresight as she is with firearms, and her grandpa Sparky, a romance novelist with an unusual past. Bridget knows what it’s like to be Quinn. She’s hunted, too. The only way to stay alive is to keep moving.

Barreling through the Sonoran Desert, the formidable trio is impelled by that same inexplicable magnetism toward the inevitable. With every deeply disturbing mile, something sinister is in the rearview―an enemy that is more than a match for Quinn. Even as he discovers within himself resources that are every bit as scary.]]>

<![CDATA[Lazy Creativity: The Art of Owning Your Creativity]]> 58034178
With a limited amount of resources, time, and energy available, and an increase of stressors, creativity has never been more important to living a bold life, full of beauty. By combining practical optimism with self-aware humor, Bernier encourages us to find and unlock our own creative selves to build a creative life worth living. Recognizing and addressing real barriers to creativity, including anxiety, fear, limited resources, a lack of motivation, and doubt, Bernier outlines his struggles and triumphs with finding his own creativity. He then shows how we can overpower these barriers using what we all already have inside all of us creativity.

Bernier’s creativity walkthrough starts with the beginning stages of creativity and addresses what to do with an initial idea in the Getting Started section, which goes over steps for creating a Creative Mindset, overcoming doubt and fear, and addressing the importance of creativity. This section is followed by ideas for Continuing creativity, which provides direction for creating a sustainable creative practice, doing more with less, and pushing through dips in motivation. The book concludes with detailed steps for Moving Forward this section addresses taking creative ownership of your work, knowing when to call a project “done, and guidance on how to move onto your next idea. Along the way there are interactive exercises to practice your own creativity and reflect on your own unique skill-set.

Lazy Creativity presents a multilayered and approachable invitation to creative self-awareness and exploration. This book is perfect for those who are looking to immediately use creativity to add beauty to your lives, to problem-solve more efficiently, and to interact with the world around you more fully by opening yourself up to creativity all around and within us. Once you’re able to see the creativity around you, you’re better able to see where your creativity fits in. Lazy Creativity elevate your awareness to the big and small creativity around you so you can live the most fulfilling life you can.]]>

<![CDATA[The Artist's Journey: The Wake of the Hero's Journey and the Lifelong Pursuit of Meaning]]> 40725353 "No one's insights about the craft and journey of being an artist have guided me in the day-to-day struggle of this profession more than Steven Pressfield. Wherever you are, whatever you've been called to make, you need to read this book...and everything else he has written."

Ryan Holiday, Bestselling Author of Ego Is the Enemy and The Obstacle Is the Way

YOU ARE AN ARTIST ... AND YOU HAVE AN ARTIST’S JOURNEY

I have a theory about the Hero’s Journey. We all have one. We have many, in fact. But our primary hero’s journey is the passage we live out, in real life, before we find our calling.

The hero’s journey ends when, like Odysseus, we return home to Ithaca, to the place from which we started.

What then?

The passage that comes next is The Artist’s Journey.

On our artist’s journey, we move past Resistance and past self-sabotage. We discover our true selves and our authentic calling, and we produce the works we were born to create.

You are an artist too—whether you realize it or not, whether you like it or not—and you have an artist’s journey. Will you live it out? Will you follow your Muse and do the work you were born to do?

Ready or not, you are called.]]>

<![CDATA[Night School (Jack Reacher, #21)]]> 28386779
It’s 1996, and Reacher is still in the army. In the morning they give him a medal, and in the afternoon they send him back to school. That night he’s off the grid. Out of sight, out of mind.

Two other men are in the classroom—an FBI agent and a CIA analyst. Each is a first-rate operator, each is fresh off a big win, and each is wondering what the hell they are doing there.

Then they find out: A Jihadist sleeper cell in Hamburg, Germany, has received an unexpected visitor—a Saudi courier, seeking safe haven while waiting to rendezvous with persons unknown. A CIA asset, undercover inside the cell, has overheard the courier whisper a chilling message: “The American wants a hundred million dollars.

For what? And who from? Reacher and his two new friends are told to find the American. Reacher recruits the best soldier he has ever worked with: Sergeant Frances Neagley. Their mission heats up in more ways than one, while always keeping their eyes on the prize: If they don’t get their man, the world will suffer an epic act of terrorism.

From Langley to Hamburg, Jalalabad to Kiev, Night School moves like a bullet through a treacherous landscape of double crosses, faked identities, and new and terrible enemies, as Reacher maneuvers inside the game and outside the law.]]>

War and Peace 21851991 Includes bonus material from Give War and Peace A Chance by Andrew D. Kaufman

From the award-winning translators of Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamazov comes this magnificent new translation of Tolstoy's masterwork.

War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men.

As Napoleon’s army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgrounds—peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers—as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving—and human—figures in world literature.]]>

Again, Dangerous Visions 39968614
1- It is the companion volume to the most influential book of speculative fiction in the past twenty-five years, the award-winning "Dangerous Visions". Of course, you've heard of "Dangerous Visions".
2- It contains original stories, written especially for this anthology, by forty-two very special writers, none of whom were in "Dangerous Visions". Of course, you remember the writers who won all those awards for "Dangerous Visions".
3- It contains forty-six stories ranging in length from shorties of 1,000 words to short novels of 40,000 words; each story was written without thought to taboos or publishing restrictions that usually hamper sci-fi writers. Of course, you remember what a mind-blower, in this respect, was "Dangerous Visions".
4- Each story has its own Afterword by the author, as well as its own individual Introduction by the editor. Of course, you remember the wealth of addenda that made such a milestone of "Dangerous Visions".
5, 6, & 7- It took over three years to compile this book. It has been edited by Harlan Ellison who put together "Dangerous Visions", which you will surely recall. And... this is a more startling book than "Dangerous Visions". This book takes off where "Dangerous Visions" stopped and it is a BETTER book than "Dangerous Visions".]]>

<![CDATA[Photographing the Dead (Nameless: Season One, #2)]]> 49884639 A self-styled artist is getting away with murder in Death Valley. If all goes well, so will Nameless. In part two of the Nameless series, the relentless avenger is haunted by nightmares of the past and visions of what’s to come.

Palmer Oxenwald’s hunting ground is the Mojave wasteland. His victims are random tourists and hikers. His trophies are cherished photographs of the damage he’s done. His greatest threat is Nameless. Two men with one thing in common: memories of the dead. For a psychopath like Palmer, they’re a clear rush in black and white. For Nameless, they’re visions of violence buried and erased. But for how long?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz comes Photographing the Dead, part of Nameless, a riveting collection of short stories about a vigilante nomad, stripped of his memories and commissioned to kill. Follow him in each story, which can be read or listened to in a single sitting.

<![CDATA[Tied In: The Business, History and Craft of Media Tie-In Writing]]> 8669095
This 75,000 word book is a ground-breaking collection of lively, informative, and provocative essays and interviews by some of the best-selling, and most acclaimed, writers in the tie-in business, offering an inside glimpse into what they do and how they do it.

Contributors include Donald Bain, Max Allan Collins, Tod Goldberg, Elizabeth Massie, William C. Dietz, Aaron Rosenberg, Paul Kupperberg, Jeff Mariotte, Raymond Benson, Robert Greenberger, David Spencer, Greg Cox, Burl Barer, Jeff Ayers, Nancy Holder, Brandie Tarvin, Alina Adams and William Rabkin.

This book is an official publication of the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS:

"If this is the Golden Age of anything in the popular fiction field, it may be the tie-in novel [...]There have always been formidable writers doing tie-ins, but they have generally been dismissed, not unreasonably, as quickies tossed off for a fast buck. That image has been improved somewhat by the quality work of editor Goldberg, the late Stuart Kaminsky, Max Allan Collins, and some of the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers members contributing to this volume. [...]With it's helpful how-to tips and articles, the book is primarily directed towards other writers, and established pros at that. But many fans and scholars will enjoy the inside-the-business stuff." Jon Breen, Mystery Scene Magazine

"TIED IN doesn't focus solely on television tie-ins. It also covers movie novelizations, comic book tie-ins and computer game tie ins. But that actually makes it even more valuable and more interesting.[...]David Spencer's wonderful “American TV Tie-Ins from the 50s through the early 70s, delves into the history of television tie-in novels and examines several of the writers from those decades, including William Johnston, Keith Laumer and Michael Avallone. [...] Other essays I found particularly interesting were “Learning on the Job, in which Nancy Holder discusses her experience writing her first tie-in novel, “This Time It's Personal, an account of how Max Allan Collins managed to write the novelization for a movie adapted from his own graphic novel, and “How to Novelize a Game, William C. Dietz's reflection on what goes into crafting a novel out of a computer/video game.[...]
TIED IN is a fascinating exploration of the media tie-in business." -- Television Obscurities Blog

"This is really interesting and entertaining stuff. I started with Tod Goldberg's essay on writing the Burn Notice books, moved on Jeff Mariotte's "Jack of All Trades," got really caught up in Max Allan Collins's "This Time It's Personal," kept right on going through the great round-table discussion, and read three or four more of the essays, including one that harks back to my era, David Spencer's "American TV Tie-Ins from the '50s to the Early '70s. I was genuinely surprised at how much fun I had reading this book, and I'm sure most of you would like it, too" -- Bill Crider's Pop Culture Magazine (billcrider.blogspot.com)

"I say this without a whit of exaggeration TIED-IN, edited by Lee Goldberg and written by the members of the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers, is the most fascinating, entertaining and honest book about the writing life I've ever read..." --Ed Gorman, author of GUILD, SLEEPING DOGS, and founder of Mystery Scene Magazine

<![CDATA[A Passion Play: The Story Of Ian Anderson And Jethro Tull]]> 23149047
Part two, is devoted to the thoughts of Ian Anderson, again largely told in the man's words, in interviews dating from their first encounter in the late 1970s to the present day. No stone is left unturned as Rabey explores Anderson s views on everything from how he writes songs, the music business itself and even his family (which is quite a rare thing for Anderson to discuss). We even get Anderson's view on two other musical geniuses Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa.

As well an official foreword from publicist Anne Leighton, the book contains mini forewords from ex-band members (Abrahams, Barre, Bunker, Giddings, Hammond and Perry) which really add to the sense of fun (this is a serious book but, like the band itself, humour is never too far away).]]>

<![CDATA[Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-year Battle between Marvel and DC]]> 35179657 The first in-depth, behind-the-scenes book treatment of the rivalry between the two comic book giants. THEY ARE THE TWO TITANS OF THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY--the Coke and Pepsi of superheroes--and for more than 50 years, Marvel and DC have been locked in an epic battle for spandex supremacy. At stake is not just sales, but cultural relevancy and the hearts of millions of fans. To many partisans, Marvel is now on top. But for much of the early 20th century, it was DC that was the undisputed leader, having launched the American superhero genre with the 1938 publication of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's Superman strip. DC's titles sold millions of copies every year, and its iconic characters were familiar to nearly everyone in America. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman -- DC had them all. And then in 1961, an upstart company came out of nowhere to smack mighty DC in the chops. With the publication of Fantastic Four #1, Marvel changed the way superheroes stories were done. Writer-editor Stan Lee, artists Jack Kirby, and the talented Marvel bullpen subsequently unleashed a string of dazzling new creations, including the Avengers, Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Iron Man. Marvel's rise forever split fandom into two opposing tribes. Suddenly the most telling question you could ask a superhero lover became "Marvel or DC?"Slugfest, the first book to chronicle the history of this epic rivalry into a single, in-depth narrative, is the story of the greatest corporate rivalry never told. Complete with interviews with the major names in the industry, Slugfest reveals the arsenal of schemes the two companies have employed in their attempts to outmaneuver the competition, whether it be stealing ideas, poaching employees, planting spies, or launching price wars. The feud has never completely disappeared, and it simmers on a low boil to this day. With DC and Marvel characters becoming global icons worth billions, if anything, the stakes are higher now than ever before.]]> 291 Reed Tucker Stephen 0 currently-reading 4.10 2017 Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-year Battle between Marvel and DC

<![CDATA[The Kaiju Film: A Critical Study of Cinema's Biggest Monsters]]> 29123032
This critical examination of kaiju considers the entirety of the genre--the major franchises, along with less well known films like Kronos (1957), Monsters (2010) and Pacific Rim (2013). The author examines how kaiju has crossed cultures from its original folkloric inspirations in both the U.S. and Japan and how the genre continues to reflect national values to audiences.]]>

<![CDATA[The Moose That Roared: The Story of Jay Ward, Bill Scott, a Flying Squirrel, and a Talking Moose]]> 22324804
Jay Ward was the magnificent visionary, the outrageous showman who lobbied Washington for statehood for Moosylvania, and invited the press to a picnic on the floor of the Plaza Hotel's august Grand Ballroom. Bill Scott was the genial, brilliant head writer, coproducer, and all-purpose creative whirlwind, often described as the "soul" of the shows. In fact, Scott even provided the voices for most of the star characters, giving life to Bullwinkle J. Moose, Mr. Peabody, Dudley Do-Right, and George of the Jungle. From their tiny, oddball animation studio, Jay Ward Productions, they created some of the most memorable animation of all time, and gave birth to a family of characters whose undying popularity has cast them forever into the pop culture firmament. With their distinctively unorthodox, artist-friendly philosophy, Ward and Scott attracted some of the most talented writers and voice actors in the industry, and for a time, Jay Ward Productions was a kind of Camelot of cartoons. Now, through exclusive interviews with Bill Scott, Tiffany Ward, June Foray, and dozens of others intimately involved with the Ward epoch, as well as access to original scripts, artwork, story notes, letters, and memos, Keith Scott has created the definitive history of Jay Ward Productions, including episode guides and voice credits for all the Jay Ward cartoons.

From the first "Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of a hat!" to the last "Watch out for that tree!", The Moose That Roared is not only the record of a legendary chapter in animation history, but also the story of a rare and magical relationship between two artists who were wildly, exuberantly ahead of their time, and the fascinating story of the struggle to bring their vision of bad puns and talking animals to unforgettable life.]]>

<![CDATA[Nearly Nero: The Adventures of Claudius Lyon, the Man Who Would Be Wolfe]]> 34806078
From 1934 until his death in 1976, Rex Stout entertained the world with the exploits of Nero Wolfe—the eccentric, organ-breeding detective genius—as related by Archie Goodwin, his irreverent legman. Nearly Nero is an affectionate, tongue-in-cheek homage to Stout’s greatest creation.

Claudius Lyon is a fanatic admirer of Wolfe. He has retrofitted himself and his townhouse after Wolfe’s and has hired a man named Arnie Woodbine to serve as his Archie Goodwin. However, Lyon’s naiveté and Woodbine’s larcenous nature constantly put them in jeopardy—more than Wolfe and Goodwin ever faced.

Somehow the imitator manages to find a solution from every problem. But can he and his assistant keep up this pretense for long?]]>

<![CDATA[Listen to This: Miles Davis and Bitches Brew (American Made Music Series)]]> 25302177 Listen to This stands out as the first book exclusively dedicated to Davis's watershed 1969 album, Bitches Brew. Victor Svorinich traces its incarnations and inspirations for ten-plus years before its release. The album arrived as the jazz scene waned beneath the rise of rock and roll and as Davis (1926-1991) faced large changes in social conditions affecting the African-American consciousness. This new climate served as a catalyst for an experiment that many considered a major departure. Davis's new music projected rock and roll sensibilities, the experimental essence of 1960s' counterculture, yet also harsh dissonances of African-American reality. Many listeners embraced it, while others misunderstood and rejected the concoction.

Listen to This is not just the story of Bitches Brew. It reveals much of the legend of Miles Davis--his attitude and will, his grace under pressure, his bands, his relationship to the masses, his business and personal etiquette, and his response to extraordinary social conditions seemingly aligned to bring him down. Svorinich revisits the mystery and skepticism surrounding the album, and places it into both a historical and musical context using new interviews, original analysis, recently found recordings, unearthed session data sheets, memoranda, letters, musical transcriptions, scores, and a wealth of other material. Additionally, Listen to This encompasses a thorough examination of producer Teo Macero's archives and Bitches Brew's original session reels in order to provide the only complete day-to-day account of the sessions.
