Gordon Teskey's freshly edited text of Milton's masterpiece is accompanied by a new introduction and substantial explanatory annotations. Spelling and punctuation have been modernized, the latter, importantly, within the limits imposed by Milton's syntax. "Sources and Backgrounds" collects relevant passages from the Bible and Milton's prose writings, including selections from The Reason of Church Government and the full text of Areopagitica. "Criticism" brings together classic interpretations by Andrew Marvell, John Dryden, Victor Hugo, and T. S. Eliot, among others, and the most important recent criticism and scholarship surrounding the epic, including essays by Northrop Frye, Barbara Lewalski, Christopher Ricks, and Helen Vendler. Dandelion Wine 76776
The only god living in Green Town, Illinois, that Douglas Spaulding knew of.

The facts about John Huff, aged twelve, are simple and soon stated.

He could pathfind more trails than any Choctaw or Cherokee since time began.
Could leap from the sky like a chimpanzee from a vine.
Could live underwater two minutes and slide fifty yards downstream.
Could hit baseballs into apple trees, knocking down harvests.
 Could jump six-foot orchard walls.
 Ran laughing.
 Sat easy.
 Was not a bully.
 Was kind.
Knew the words to all the cowboy songs and would teach you if you asked.
Knew the names of all the wild flowers and when the moon would rise or set and when the tides came in or out.

He was, in fact, the only god living in the whole of Green Town, Illinois, during the twentieth century that Douglas Spaulding knew of.

<![CDATA[The Children of Children Keep Coming: An Epic Griotsong]]> 5941794 The Children of Children Keep Coming is an awe-inspiring contribution to literature. A breathtaking form of poetic expression, this unique work presents a riveting chronicle of the African American experience in the United States.

The dramatic odyssey opens with two anonymous slaves running to catch the Freedom Train, where at journey's end they hope to find liberation. Along the way, they encounter fields of laborers sowing seeds, plodding hard under sun high and moon low, working to end slavery. The toilers are sustained by work songs that at one moment express the dreams and fears of the downtrodden and at another moment burst forth with unbound faith and optimism.

These determined travelers, with dangerous crows circling around them, roam through fields holding their dead; step over graves of the once enslaved; walk across beds of red, white, and blue flowers, all for the opportunity to march on the green lawns of democracy. Throughout their entangled journey, they meet imaginary and mythological characters. But it is down by the riverside where their belief that a time of change will come is affirmed by engagements with "giants" such as Frederick Douglass, Billie Holiday, Hank Aaron, Sojourner Truth, and Rosa Parks.

The Children of Children Keep Coming is strung seamlessly together—by poetry and prose, blues and gospel, hymns and jazz, work songs and prayers—forcing the universal harmony of the cry for freedom and justice to reach an unforgettable pitch that cannot be ignored.

This astounding mosaic of voices is accentuated by the images of Romare Bearden.]]>

The Looking Glass War 15808350 A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

It would have been an easy job for the Circus: a can of film couriered from Helsinki to London. In the past the Circus handled all things political, while the Department dealt with matters military. But the Department has been moribund since the War, its resources siphoned away. Now, one of their agents is dead, and vital evidence verifying the presence of Soviet missiles near the West German border is gone. John Avery is the Department's younger member and its last hope. Charged with handling Fred Leiser, a German-speaking Pole left over from the War, Avery must infiltrate the East and restore his masters' former glory.

Darkly compelling and brutally Machiavellian, The Looking Glass War is a stunning accomplishment by one of today's most remarkable and enduring literary writers.

This is a spy novel, but it does not read as genre fiction. It is less flashy and feels more authentic than the excellent The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, the novel that immediately preceded it. It's actually a rather damning portrait of British intelligence agencies. In fact, if you come to this book looking for a fast-paced thriller, you will be disappointed until maybe the last quarter of the book. When I closed the book on the last page, though, I had that buzzing in my head I get from finishing a good book. These characters will stay with me.

Pride and Prejudice 84979 Another cover edition for this ISBN

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.]]>

Woody Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and traveled this whole country over—not by jet or motorcycle, but by boxcar, thumb, and foot. During the journey of discovery that was his life, he composed and sang words and music that have become a national heritage. His songs, however, are but part of his legacy. I read this novel years ago, and it left a big impression on me. Rereading it now, I am somewhat surprised to find that it is just as good if not better than I remember it being. The novel tells the story of a group of men involved in a Jersey City crime family, sort of a more sordid version of The Godfather. It is very gritty and quite brutal, but I hesitate to call it a crime novel because its ambitions are much greater. This is a penetrating look into the lives and motivations of these men that transcends the usual gangster cliches. Stephen King called it a novel about the dark side of the American dream, and I agree.

<![CDATA[The Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid of Virgil]]> 2579662 Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here.

From the back of the 1966 Oxford University Press edition:

Virgil has always had the fortune of attracting, as translators, fellow poets: it is in succession to Dryden and William Morris that C. Day Lewis -himself a distinguished poet- has written these modern versions of the Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid.

In his translations of Virgil's pastoral poetry Mr. Day Lewis has employed a metre with six stresses to the line. Though it is very different in its rhythms from Virgil's hexameter, the translation is made line for line, with a minimum of padding or omission. In the Aeneid he has evolved a long, loosely flowing line which catches the subtleties, the taut vigour, and the sweep of Virgil's verse. The power of such a translation is to be measured not only in the great 'set pieces' with which the Aeneid glitters, but also in its furthering of the whole movement of the poem, and in its revelation of the philosophy sustaining it. Judged by such standards, this translation is a notable success.]]>

Like: Poems 37941907
A stunning new collection by the award-winning young poet and translator

Like , that currency of social media, is a little word with infinite potential; it can be nearly any part of speech. Without it, there is no simile, that engine of the lyric poem, the lyre’s note in the epic. A poem can hardly exist otherwise. In this new collection, her most ambitious to date, A. E. Stallings continues her archeology of the domestic, her odyssey through myth and motherhood in received and invented forms, from sonnets to syllabics. Stallings also eschews the poetry volume’s conventional sections for the arbitrary order of the alphabet. Contemporary Athens itself, a place never dull during the economic and migration crises of recent years, shakes off the dust of history and emerges as a vibrant character.

Known for her wry and musical lyric poems, Stallings here explores her themes in greater depth, including the bravura performance Lost and Found , a meditation in ottava rima on a parent’s sublunary dance with daily-ness and time, set in the moon’s Valley of Lost Things.]]>

Peaches Goes It Alone: Poems 37941779
This is the End of Days.
This is what we’ve been waiting for always.
I walked over to the Hudson River, heading for Mars.
Each poem of mine is a suicide belt.
I say that to my girlfriend Life.

Peaches Goes It Alone , Frederick Seidel’s newest collection of poems, begins with global warming and ends with Aphrodite. In between is everything. Peaches Goes It Alone presents the sexual and political themes that have long preoccupied Seidel―and thrilled and offended his readers. Lyrical, grotesque, and elegiac, Peaches Goes It Alone adds new music and menace to Seidel’s masterful body of work.]]>

The Flame 37941942 The Flame is the final work from Leonard Cohen, the revered poet and musician whose fans span generations and whose work is celebrated throughout the world. Featuring poems, excerpts from his private notebooks, lyrics, and hand-drawn self-portraits, The Flame offers an unprecedentedly intimate look inside the life and mind of a singular artist.

A reckoning with a life lived deeply and passionately, with wit and panache, The Flame is a valedictory work.

“This volume contains my father’s final efforts as a poet, writes Cohen’s son, Adam Cohen, in his foreword. “It was what he was staying alive to do, his sole breathing purpose at the end.

Leonard Cohen died in late 2016. But “each page of paper that he blackened, in the words of his son, “was lasting evidence of a burning soul.”]]>

Yet another excellent Elmore Leonard novel. This one is a meta noir. A former Secret Service agent turned street photographer gets involved with an aging but still beautiful (of course!) noir actress who may or may not be a real life femme fatale. It has the colorful characters and note-perfect dialogue for which Leonard is famous. I also love the way he evokes South Beach, Miami. The neighborhood is like another character.

I couldn't go all summer without reading at least one detective novel. In this novel, the detective is a reporter and not a private eye or police officer. Fletch is a Baby Boomer update of the classic Hammett-Chandler style protagonist. He is a smart, capable, world-weary loner with a strong sense of justice, but he also smokes pot, wears t-shirts and jeans, and gets in trouble for hanging around the newsroom barefoot.

Lou Reed: A Life 34219839
As lead singer and songwriter for the Velvet Underground and a renowned solo artist, Lou Reed invented alternative rock. His music, at once a source of transcendent beauty and coruscating noise, violated all definitions of genre while speaking to millions of fans and inspiring generations of musicians.

But while his iconic status may be fixed, the man himself was anything but. Lou Reed's life was a transformer's odyssey. Eternally restless and endlessly hungry for new experiences, Reed reinvented his persona, his sound, even his sexuality time and again. A man of contradictions and extremes, he was fiercely independent yet afraid of being alone, artistically fearless yet deeply paranoid, eager for commercial success yet disdainful of his own triumphs. Channeling his jagged energy and literary sensibility into classic songs - like "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Sweet Jane" - and radically experimental albums alike, Reed remained desperately true to his artistic vision, wherever it led him.

Now, just a few years after Reed's death, Rolling Stone writer Anthony DeCurtis, who knew Reed and interviewed him extensively, tells the provocative story of his complex and chameleonic life. With unparalleled access to dozens of Reed's friends, family, and collaborators, DeCurtis tracks Reed's five-decade career through the accounts of those who knew him and through Reed's most revealing testimony, his music. We travel deep into his defiantly subterranean world, enter the studio as the Velvet Underground record their groundbreaking work, and revel in Reed's relationships with such legendary figures as Andy Warhol, David Bowie, and Laurie Anderson. Gritty, intimate, and unflinching, Lou Reed is an illuminating tribute to one of the most incendiary artists of our time.]]>

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and learned a lot, but though it was promoted as the definitive Lou Reed biography, there are several odd omissions. DeCurtis does not even briefly mention the films Reed appeared in, notably Get Crazy and Blue in the Face. Several important releases like The Velvet Undergound's VU and Another View and Reed's live albums Perfect Night and Animal Serenade also receive no mention. The first part of the book is detailed and interesting, but the account of his life and work from the early 80s on is thinner. I was somewhat disappointed.

The Anatomy Lesson 56096 From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Pastoral--and one of the most renowned writers of the twentieth century--"a ferocious, heartfelt book" (The New Yorker) featuring Nathan Zuckerman whose life is about to unravel when he comes down with a mysterious affliction.

Roth has a genius for the comedy of entrapment.... [He] writes America's most raucously funny novels. --Time

At forty, the writer Nathan Zuckerman comes down with a mysterious affliction--pure pain, beginning in his neck and shoulders, invading his torso, and taking possession of his spirit. Zuckerman, whose work was his life, is unable to write a line. Now his work is trekking from one doctor to another, but none can find a cause for the pain and nobody can assuage it. Zuckerman himself wonders if the pain can have been caused by his own books. And while he is wondering, his dependence on painkillers grows into an addiction to vodka, marijuana, and Percodan.

The Anatomy Lesson is a great comedy of illness written in what the English critic Hermione Lee has described as a manner at once ... brash and thoughtful ... lyrical and wry, which projects through comic expostulations and confessions...a knowing, humane authority. The third volume of the trilogy and epilogue Zuckerman Bound, The Anatomy Lesson provides some of the funniest scenes in all of Roth's fiction as well as some of the fiercest.]]>

I just reread this. It's a weird, wild play, not to everyone's taste, but I kind of love it. Two gangster-like rock stars, Hoss and Crow, battle for chart supremacy ("a gold record") in an elaborate, futuristic game. They engage in psychological warfare through what seems like a stream of consciousness version of "the dozens." The play is part tragedy, part post-apocalyptic, sci-fi western. Shepard invented an argot for the characters to speak that reminds me of A Clockwork Orange.

T Bone Burnett wrote the songs for this version of the play. In 2008, he recorded them for an album that is also well worth checking out.

The Stranger World 35301325 Ernest Hilbert

“Ryan Wilson’s mastery of traditional forms serves a fresh, distinctive poetry of candor and meditation: soulful rather than brittle, more observant than performative. The idiomatic, American blank verse of Wilson’s â€Authorityâ€ and â€L’Estraneoâ€ is as fluent as that of Robert Frost, but with an oblique tenderness that reminds me of Frost’s friend Edward Thomas.â€
Robert Pinsky, Poet Laureate of the United States 19972000

“Bach understood there could be â€no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion.â€ Ryan Wilson’s classical lines and received forms reveal his â€stranger worldâ€ of rebellious Goths, murderous madmen, and the divine revelations of a mountain roadhouse. The sprinkling of brilliant translations here reminds us: his is the axis between Horace and Baudelaire â€ between lapidary lyrics (â€Face Itâ€ and â€Lullaby for a Suburban Summer Eveningâ€), haunting dramas (â€Authorityâ€), and melancholy odes (â€For a One Night Standâ€). Wilson has more talent in his little finger than most poets have in their whole corpora.â€
David Yezzi, author of Birds of the Air

“Ryan Wilson is a poet of nightmares. Monstrous possibilities lurk in his elegant stanzas: a black panther stalks the suburbs, a haunted marriage collapses, strange faces loom at windows. As he learned from his masters Horace, Villon, and Baudelaire, a classical flourish can bring us face to face with horror, or with ourselves.
Rosanna Warren, author of Ghost in a Red Hat

“Ryan Wilson’s collection of poetry The Stranger World includes heartbreaking lyrics, haunting narratives, inspired translations, and finely honed satires. It is not simply consummate skill that is everywhere present in these well-wrought poems but, to echo the title of one of the best of them, authority. They are written with the authority of mastery.
Mark Jarman, author of The Heronry

“Ryan Wilson’s unsettling debut collection The Stranger World is filled with poems of menace and promise, surprise and sorrow, tempered by gentle humor and always tuned to a fine music. The long poem â€Authorityâ€ reads like a masterpiece of modern horror. The deeply psychological â€Xeniaâ€ is a minor miracle of a poem. These pages contain â€real shores across imagined seas . . . where black suns set,â€ where the poet meditates on â€that present unity / of absences the living move among.â€ Each page of The Stranger World yields a new delight. Wilson proves himself a worthy heir to Anthony Hecht with this remarkable, disarming, and genuinely moving book. Seek it out.â€
 Ernest Hilbert, author of Caligulan

“Ryan Wilson’s first collection of poems, The Stranger World, is auspicious. I am awed by his poetic craft, his supple and eclectic intelligence, his command of English as delightful as any storyteller’s should be. One looks for authentic character in the emerging poet, and Wilson is simply a stand-up man. His is the tradition of the elegant poet who has the feel of the earth in what he says, one wise with the best and worst of human experience. Richard Fariña evokes the Sixties as precisely, wittily, and poignantly as F. Scott Fitzgerald captured the Jazz Age. The hero, Gnossus Pappadopoulis, weaves his way through the psychedelic landscape, encountering-among other things-mescaline, women, art, gluttony, falsehood, science, prayer, and, occasionally, truth.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.]]>

Richard II 82398
When he seizes the title and property that should be Bolingbroke’s, Richard threatens the very structure of the kingdom. Bolingbroke returns with an army that is supported by nobles and commoners alike, both believing themselves oppressed by Richard. This sets the stage for a confrontation between his army and the tradition of sacred kingship supporting the isolated but now more sympathetic Richard.

The authoritative edition of Richard II from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes:

-Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play
-Full explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play
-Scene-by-scene plot summaries
-A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases
-An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language
-An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play
-Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books
-An annotated guide to further reading

Essay by Harry Berger, Jr.

The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu.]]>

Life 10428102 The long-awaited autobiography of the guitarist, songwriter, singer, and founding member of the Rolling Stones. Ladies and gentlemen: Keith Richards.

With The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the songs that roused the world, and he lived the original rock and roll life.

Now, at last, the man himself tells his story of life in the crossfire hurricane. Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records, learning guitar and forming a band with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones. The Rolling Stones's first fame and the notorious drug busts that led to his enduring image as an outlaw folk hero. Creating immortal riffs like the ones in "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Honky Tonk Women." His relationship with Anita Pallenberg and the death of Brian Jones. Tax exile in France, wildfire tours of the U.S., isolation and addiction. Falling in love with Patti Hansen. Estrangement from Jagger and subsequent reconciliation. Marriage, family, solo albums and Xpensive Winos, and the road that goes on forever.

With his trademark disarming honesty, Keith Richard brings us the story of a life we have all longed to know more of, unfettered, fearless, and true.]]>

Bob Dylan in America 7955136
Growing up in Greenwich Village, Sean Wilentz discovered the music of Bob Dylan as a young teenager; almost half a century later, he revisits Dylan’s work with the skills of an eminent American historian as well as the passion of a fan. Drawn in part from Wilentz’s essays as “historian in residence of Dylan’s official website, Bob Dylan in America is a unique blend of fact, interpretation, and affinity—a book that, much like its subject, shifts gears and changes shape as the occasion warrants.

Beginning with his explosion onto the scene in 1961, this book follows Dylan as he continues to develop a body of musical and literary work unique in our cultural history. Wilentz’s approach places Dylan’s music in the context of its time, including the early influences of Popular Front ideology and Beat aesthetics, and offers a larger critical appreciation of Dylan as both a songwriter and performer down to the present. Wilentz has had unprecedented access to studio tapes, recording notes, rare photographs, and other materials, all of which allow him to tell Dylan’s story and that of such masterpieces as Blonde on Blonde with an unprecedented authenticity and richness.

Bob Dylan in America —groundbreaking, comprehensive, totally absorbing—is the result of an author and a subject brilliantly met.]]>

Now with an exciting new preface by rock musician Lou Reed (Delmore Schwartz’s student at Syracuse), In Dreams Begin Responsibilities collects eight of Schwartz’s finest delineations of New York’s intellectuals in the 1930s and 1940s. As no other writer can, Schwartz captures the speech, the generational conflicts, the mocking self-analysis of educated, ambitious, Depression-stymied young people at odds with their immigrant parents. This is the unique American dilemma Irving Howe described as “that interesting point where intellectual children of immigrant Jews are finding their way into the larger world while casting uneasy, rueful glances over their backs. Afterwords by James Atlas and Irving Howe place the stories in their historical and cultural setting.]]>

<![CDATA[A Season in Hell & Illuminations]]> 168496 –Edward Hirsch

From Dante’s Inferno to Sartre’s No Exit, writers have been fascinated by visions of damnation. Within that rich literature of suffering, Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell–written when the poet was nineteen–provides an astonishing example of the grapple with self.

As a companion to Rimbaud’s journey, readers could have no better guide than Wyatt Mason. One of our most talented young translators and critics, Mason’s new version of A Season in Hell renders the music and mystery of Rimbaud’s tale of Hell on Earth with exceptional finesse and power.

This bilingual edition includes maps, a helpful chronology of Rimbaud’s life, and the unfinished suite of prose poems, Illuminations and A Season in Hell cement Rimbaud’s reputation as one of the foremost, and most influential, writers in French literature.]]>

Nightmare Town: Stories 321270 Introduced by Colin Dexter, one of England's greatest writers of detective fiction, here are twenty long-unavailable stories by Dashiell Hammett, the author of The Maltese Falcon and one of the finest writers of the twentieth century.

In the title story, a man on a bender enters a small town and ends up unravelling the dark mystery at its heart. A woman confronts the brutal truth about her husband in the chilling story, The Ruffian's Wife. His Brother's Keeper is a half-wit boxer's eulogy to the brother who betrayed him. The Second Story Angel recounts one of the most novel cons ever devised. In seven stories, the tough and taciturn Continental Op takes on a motley collection of the deceitful, the duped, and the dead, and once again shown his uncanny ability to get at the truth. In three stories, Sam Spade confronts the darkness in the human soul while rolling his own cigarettes. And the first study for The Thin Man sends John Guild on a murder investigation in which almost every witness may be lying.

In Nightmare Town, Dashiell Hammett, America's poet laureate of the dispossessed, shows us a world where people confront a multitude of evils. Whether they are trying to right wrongs or just trying to survive, all of them are rendered with Hammett's signature gifts for sharp-edged characters and blunt dialogue.

Hammett said that his ambition was to elevate mystery fiction to the level of art. This collection of masterful stories clearly illustrates Hammett's success, and shows the remarkable range and variety of the fiction he produced.

As a novelist of realistic intrigue, Hammett was unsurpassed in his own or any day. - Ross MacDonald

A legend of a different kind: exemplary, not only of a certain kind of American fiction, but also of a certain kind of American life - Margaret Atwood

This book is for anyone interested in Bob Dylan, folk music, or American history-- particular the history of the American Left. Marquesse examines the politcal nature of Dylan's work in the Sixties--eschewing the neat narrative that says Dylan turned his back on political commentary when he "went electric"--and shows not only how his music reflected the times but also how the times in many ways reflected his music! Great close readings of the lyrics for the most part too, but Marquesse falters with his readings of some of the love songs and the spiritual songs on John Wesley Harding. A lot of the books on Dylan tend to be kind of weak. This one isn't.
