I think I hit a kind of slump with this one, it is nice, but it failed to demand my attention, compared to the Oddmire trilogy, the Jackaby series didn't win my heart, I still wish we had it from jackaby's pov than of Abigail's , she is not the worst narrator out there, but she wasn't an interesting voice.

i have to admit sometimes when I am not lost in whatever Zebulon was describing I was intrigued, other than that it was like reading an academic research paper , you might understand it as a whole, but many words needed a research trip on its own,
it was tiring , the character is not someone to root for, he is pathetic, a coward and talented in making the wrong decision EVERY SINGLE TIME.. it has a macabre layer throughout the decades it takes you to read it, but have to admit, Zebulon managed to make me smile once or twice, and the plot succeeded to grasp my attention from time to time, but I just wanted it to finish it , and I cant believe it is only volume 1 , part of me wants to know what will happen next, but not now, and don't know when..

Andrew Peterson spins a quirky and riveting tale of the Igibys¡¯ extraordinary journey from Glipwood¡¯s Dragon Day Festival and a secret hidden in the Books and Crannies Bookstore, past the terrifying Black Carriage, clutches of the horned hounds and loathsome toothy cows surrounding AnkleJelly Manor, through the Glipwood Forest and mysterious treehouse of Peet the Sock Man (known for a little softshoe and wearing tattered socks on his hands and arms), to the very edge of the Ice Prairies.

Full of characters rich in heart, smarts, and courage, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness presents a world of wonder and a tale children of all ages will cherish, families can read aloud, and readers¡¯ groups are sure to discuss for its layers of meaning about life¡¯s true treasure and tangle of the beautiful and horrible, temporal and eternal, and good and bad.]]>

The Boy in the Burning House 1500262
Two years after his father's mysterious disappearance, Jim Hawkins is coping -- barely. Underneath, he's frozen in uncertainty and grief. What did happen to his father? Is he dead or just gone? Then Jim meets Ruth Rose. Moody, provocative, she's the bad-girl stepdaughter of Father Fisher, Jim's father's childhood friend and the town pastor, and she shocks Jim out of his stupor when she tells him her stepfather is a murderer. "Don't you want to know who he murdered?" she asks. Jim doesn't. Ruth Rose is clearly crazy -- a sixteen-year-old misfit. Yet something about her fierce conviction pierces Jim's shell. He begins to burn with a desire for the truth, until it becomes clear that it may be more unsettling than he can bear. What is the real meaning of the strange prayers Father Fisher intones behind the door of his private sanctuary? Why does Ruth Rose suddenly disappear? And what really happened thirty years ago when a boy died in a burning house?

The Boy in the Burning House is the winner of the 2002 Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Mystery.]]>

<![CDATA[The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry (Sunderworld #1)]]> 209752701 The much-anticipated new fantasy series from Ransom Riggs, his first since introducing the #1 global phenomenon Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry is seeing weird things around Los Angeles. A man who pops a tooth into a parking meter. A glowing trapdoor in a parking lot. A half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire that just won¡¯t leave him alone. Every hallucinatory moment seems plucked from a cheesy 1990s fantasy TV show called Max's Adventures in Sunderworld¡ªand that¡¯s because they are.

Not a good sign.

In the blurry weeks after his mother¡¯s death, a young Leopold discovered VHS tapes of its one and only season in a box headed for the trash¡ªand soon became obsessed. Losing himself in Sunder was the best way to avoid two things: grieving his mother and being a chronic disappointment to his overbearing father. But when the strange visions return¡ªat the worst possible time on the worst possible day¡ªLeopold turns to his best friend Emmet for help. Together they discover that Sunder is much more than just an old TV show, and that Los Angeles is far stranger than they ever imagined. And soon, he¡¯ll realize that not only is Sunderworld real, but it¡¯s in grave danger.

Certain he¡¯s finally been chosen for greatness, Leopold risks everything to claim his destiny, save the world of his childhood dreams, and prove once and for all that he¡¯s not the disappointment his father believes him to be. But when everything goes terribly, horribly, excruciatingly wrong, Leopold¡¯s disappointments prove to be more extraordinary than he ever could have imagined.

How do you battle darkness when no one believes in you¡ªnot even yourself?

Welcome to Sunderworld.]]>

<![CDATA[Three Wild Dogs (and the Truth)]]> 213111930
There¡¯s a madman dog beside me, and the hounds of memory ahead of us . . . It¡¯s love and beasts and wild mistakes, and regret, but never to change things.

What happens when the Zusak family opens their home to three big, wild, street-hardened dogs¡ªReuben, more wolf than hound; Archer, blond, beautiful, destructive; and the rancorously smiling Frosty, who walks like a rolling thunderstorm?

The answer can only be chaos: There are street fights, park fights, public shamings, property damages, injuries, hospital visits, wellness checks, pure comedy, shocking tragedy, and carnage that must be read to be believed.

There is a reckoning of shortcomings and failure, a strengthening of will, but most important of all, an explosion of love¡ªand the joy and recognition of family.

Three Wild Dogs (and the Truth) is a tender, motley, and exquisitely written memoir about the human need for both connection and disorder, a love letter to the animals who bring hilarity and beauty¡ªbut also the visceral truth of the natural world¡ªstraight to our doors and into our lives and change us forever.]]>

Before there was a famous king named Arthur, there was a curious boy named Wart and a kind old wizard named Merlyn. Transformed by Merlyn into the forms of his fantasy, Wart learns the value of history from a snake, of education from a badger, and of courage from a hawk--the lessons that help turn a boy into a man. Together, Wart and Merlyn take the reader through this timeless story of childhood and adventure--The Sword in the Stone.

T.H. White's classic tale of the young Arthur's questioning and discovery of his life is unparalleled for its wit and wisdom, and for its colorful characters, from the wise Merlyn to the heroic Robin Wood to the warmhearted King Pellinore.

South of Broad 6135237
Against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad gathers a unique cast of sinners and saints. Leopold Bloom King, our narrator, is the son of an amiable, loving father who teaches science at the local high school. His mother, an ex-nun, is the high school principal and a well-known Joyce scholar. After Leo's older brother commits suicide at the age of thirteen, the family struggles with the shattering effects of his death, and Leo, lonely and isolated, searches for something to sustain him. Eventually, he finds his answer when he becomes part of a tightly knit group of high school seniors that includes friends Sheba and Trevor Poe, glamorous twins with an alcoholic mother and a prison-escapee father; hardscrabble mountain runaways Niles and Starla Whitehead; socialite Molly Huger and her boyfriend, Chadworth Rutledge X; and an ever-widening circle whose liaisons will ripple across two decades-from 1960s counterculture through the dawn of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.

The ties among them endure for years, surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, and Charleston's dark legacy of racism and class divisions. But the final test of friendship that brings them to San Francisco is something no one is prepared for. South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest; a long-awaited work from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.]]>

352 Ammar Al Naaimi 9996944921 Yami 3 to be honest I was skeptical about this, I thought it will amateurish kind of novel but on the contrary the writing and the editing was good few misses were there but weren't significant, and to be honest there IS plot holes, but meh! it didn't stop it from being a nice read. needed just some depth into its magical system.
I though am going to indulge into a horror supernatural story, about Jinn and possessions, and being in the same country the novel is taking place, that was kind of intriguing with a promise of scary, but it turned out to be more of the adventure type and a better word for it will be more of a " shounen" type, cos by maybe chapter five it started to have the shape and aura of anime.
which made it very vivid especially in the matter of the fighting scenes.
I think what made this novel unique is the mixing of the Omani culture and the Arabic words within it , which felt odd and natural at the same time,
I only wished that the Arabic words, were also written in Arabic in between brackets , instead of me guessing them, I was mistaking the novel's title for ????? . which was confusing, I was pondering why the author choose such a weird name , till I understood that it is actually supposed to be ???? which made loads of sense.

as for the characters, I know I enjoy the story if I started to care for the characters, and that shocking turning point, I did NOT see it coming, and that scene of goodbye, was truly sad, which made me admire the novel.

All in all it took me by a surprise that I truly enjoyed it.]]>

Your Blood, My Bones 124932778 A seductively twisted romance about loyalty, fate, the lengths we go to hide the darkest parts of ourselves . . . and the people who love those parts most of all.

Wyatt Westlock has one plan for the farmhouse she's just inherited -- to burn it to the ground. But during her final walkthrough of her childhood home, she makes a shocking discovery in the basement -- Peter, the boy she once considered her best friend, strung up in chains and left for dead.

Unbeknownst to Wyatt, Peter has suffered hundreds of ritualistic deaths on her family's property. Semi-immortal, Peter never remains dead for long, but he can't really live, either. Not while he's bound to the farm, locked in a cycle of grisly deaths and painful rebirths. There's only one way for him to break free. He needs to end the Westlock line.

He needs to kill Wyatt.

With Wyatt's parents gone, the spells protecting the property have begun to unravel, and dark, ancient forces gather in the nearby forest. The only way for Wyatt to repair the wards is to work with Peter -- the one person who knows how to harness her volatile magic. But how can she trust a boy who's sworn an oath to destroy her? When the past turns up to haunt them in the most unexpected way, they are forced to rely on one another to survive, or else tear each other apart.]]>

Replica (Replica, #1) 28448287 Lyra

From a distance, the Haven Institute, tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida, looks serene and even beautiful. But up close the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth, it is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed.

But when a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects¡ªLyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72¡ªmanage to escape. As they make their way through a new and menacing environment, they meet a stranger named Gemma, who has embarked on a perilous quest of her own. And as Lyra tries to understand Haven¡¯s purpose, she uncovers earth-shattering secrets that will change the lives of both girls.

Gemma

Gemma has been in and out of hospitals her whole life. A sickly child, she has grown into a lonely adolescent whose life is circumscribed by home, school, and her best friend, April.

But after she is nearly abducted by a stranger claiming to know her, Gemma starts to investigate her family¡¯s past and discovers her father¡¯s mysterious connection to the secretive Haven research facility. Hungry for answers, she travels to Florida, only to stumble upon two human models, or replicas, 24 and 72¡ªand a completely new set of questions. As Gemma tries to unravel the mysteries of Haven, she learns terrible truths about herself and her family that will threaten to destroy everything she loves.

"Miracles, marvels, saints, sinners, love, plague, and treachery! M. T. Anderson has laid out a medieval feast of a novel, stuffed with everything I could have wished for. If I could canonize him for it, I would. But I¡¯ll settle for shouting about how much I love this book."¡ªKelly Link, author of The Book of Love

"M. T. Anderson is one of our greatest and most precious voices. His books aren't just brilliantly witty and vastly entertaining, they're fixed stars of wisdom and sanity in our increasingly unhinged universe. When lost, I use them to steer by."¡ªLev Grossman, author of The Magicians Trilogy

The year is 1087, and a pox is sweeping through the Italian city of Bari. When a lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams, he interprets the vision as a call to serve the sick. But his superiors, and the power brokers they serve, have different plans for the tender-hearted Brother Nicephorus.

Enter Tyun, a charismatic treasure hunter renowned for ¡°liberating¡± holy relics from their tombs. The seven-hundred-year-old bones of Saint Nicholas are rumored to weep a mysterious liquid that can heal the sick, Tyun says. For the humble price of a small fortune, he will steal the bones and deliver them to Bari, curing the plague and restoring glory to the fallen city. And Nicephorus, the ¡°dreamer,¡± will be his guide.

What follows is a heist for the ages, as Nicephorus is swept away on strange tides, and alongside even stranger bedfellows, to commit sacrilegious theft. Based on real historical accounts, Nicked is a swashbuckling saga, a medieval novel noir, a meditation on the miraculous, and a monastic meet-cute, filled with wide-eyed wonder at the world that awaits beyond our own borders.]]>

Roland Deschain and his ka-tet¡ªJake, Susannah, Eddie, and Oy, the billy-bumbler¡ªencounter a ferocious storm just after crossing the River Whye on their way to the Outer Baronies. As they shelter from the howling gale, Roland tells his friends not just one strange story but two . . . and in so doing, casts new light on his own troubled past.

In his early days as a gunslinger, in the guilt-ridden year following his mother¡¯s death, Roland is sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a ¡°skin-man¡± preying upon the population around Debaria. Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, the brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast¡¯s most recent slaughter. Only a teenager himself, Roland calms the boy and prepares him for the following day¡¯s trials by reciting a story from the Magic Tales of the Eld that his mother often read to him at bedtime. ¡°A person¡¯s never too old for stories,¡± Roland says to Bill. ¡°Man and boy, girl and woman, never too old. We live for them.¡± And indeed, the tale that Roland unfolds, the legend of Tim Stoutheart, is a timeless treasure for all ages, a story that lives for us.

King began the Dark Tower series in 1974; it gained momentum in the 1980s; and he brought it to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004. The Wind Through the Keyhole is sure to fascinate avid fans of the Dark Tower epic. But this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an enchanting and haunting journey to Roland¡¯s world and testimony to the power of Stephen King¡¯s storytelling magic.

<![CDATA[Quicksilver (Fae & Alchemy, #1)]]> 212127083
In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn't much a girl wouldn't do for a glass of water.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember.

But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone.

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently re-opens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares... but it turns out they're real, and Saeris has landed herself in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist's magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him . . . or her.

Death has a name. It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate. His past is murky. His attitude stinks. And he's the only way Saeris is going to make it home.]]>

Kensuke's Kingdom 1033346 Peggy Sue, he struggles to survive on his own. But he soon realises there is someone close by, someone who is watching over him and helping him to stay alive. Following a close-run battle between life and death after being stung by a poisonous jelly fish, the mysterious someone--Kensuke--allows Michael into his world and they become friends, teaching and learning from each other, until the day of separation becomes inevitable.

Morpurgo here spins a yarn which gently captures the adventurous elements one would expect from a desert-island tale, but the real strength lies in the poignant and subtle observations of friendship, trust and, ultimately, humanity.

Beautifully illustrated by Michael Foreman, Kensuke's Kingdom is a stylish, deceptively simple and magical book that will effortlessly capture the heart and imagination of anyone who reads it, ensuring that Morpurgo continues to stand tall amid the ranks of classic children's authors. well, I cant say I loved it, the plot was more sad than scary, the idea of racism and injustice was the terrifying part to be honest. and it was the focus of biggest chunk of the novel , but I read for the supernatural part, and that what intrigued me most, again not scary just sad , that school was horrible to the children, and the chr. of Haddock felt like the slimy fish he was named after, though the climax in his part was kind of a meh.
as for Blue he didn't surprise me much, and I was irritated with him than sympathized , I liked Redbone the most. he was my favorite chr. in all of this. and Miz Lottie in the second place.
it is funny that I didn't really care for Robbie though he was the main chr.

the narrating was truly good, though it was NOT a short novel, I was not bored, it is slow though and it has lots of parts repeated and paraphrased especially in the beginning. it dragged and wish have been a little less in the page count

If I compared this to any thing it is like the novel Kindred
it has the same vibe of injustice slavery history and supernatural, but I kind of liked Kindred more.]]>

Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

The 2nd book, directly after I re-finished Half BAD...
it is NOT the same, when I fist read half bad it has this unique plot going, it was new different fast paced, smooth and elegant, rushing unstoppable ,but in this one it slowed down , the plot struggled I felt as it it was stretching and turning to adjust itself to go back into the old path,
though it was all adding up, and was connected , something was off, dont know what ,,it was lacking something from the first one...

still the book is GOOOOD, in Half Wild....... ,

[spoilers removed]

Don't get me wrong I am still favoring this trilogy..but...but...BUT,

The 2nd book, directly after I re-finished Half BAD...
it is NOT the same, when I fist read half bad it has this unique plot going, it was new different fast paced, smooth and elegant, rushing unstoppable ,but in this one it slowed down , the plot struggled I felt as it it was stretching and turning to adjust itself to go back into the old path,
though it was all adding up, and was connected , something was off, dont know what ,,it was lacking something from the first one...

still the book is GOOOOD, in Half Wild....... ,

<![CDATA[The Word is Murder (Hawthorne & Horowitz, #1)]]> 36204075 SHE PLANNED HER OWN FUNERAL. BUT DID SHE ARRANGE HER OWN MURDER?

New York Times bestselling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty, Anthony Horowitz has yet again brilliantly reinvented the classic crime novel, this time writing a fictional version of himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes.

One bright spring morning in London, Diana Cowper ¨C the wealthy mother of a famous actor - enters a funeral parlor. She is there to plan her own service.

Six hours later she is found dead, strangled with a curtain cord in her own home.

Enter disgraced police detective Daniel Hawthorne, a brilliant, eccentric investigator who¡¯s as quick with an insult as he is to crack a case. Hawthorne needs a ghost writer to document his life; a Watson to his Holmes. He chooses Anthony Horowitz.

Drawn in against his will, Horowitz soon finds himself a the center of a story he cannot control. Hawthorne is brusque, temperamental and annoying but even so his latest case with its many twists and turns proves irresistible. The writer and the detective form an unusual partnership. At the same time, it soon becomes clear that Hawthorne is hiding some dark secrets of his own.

A masterful and tricky mystery that springs many surprises, The Word is Murder is Anthony Horowitz at his very best.]]>

<![CDATA[The Sentence is Death (Hawthorne & Horowitz, #2)]]> 39913740
These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer. Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine ¨C a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth ?3,000, to be precise.

Odd, considering he didn¡¯t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man¡¯s many, many enemies did the deed?

Baffled, the police are forced to bring in Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, the author Anthony, who¡¯s really getting rather good at this murder investigation business.

But as Hawthorne takes on the case with characteristic relish, it becomes clear that he, too, has secrets to hide. As our reluctant narrator becomes ever more embroiled in the case, he realises that these secrets must be exposed ¨C even at the risk of death¡

<![CDATA[A Line to Kill (Hawthorne & Horowitz #3)]]> 56755487 New York Times bestselling author of the brilliantly inventive The Word Is Murder and The Sentence Is Death returns with his third literary whodunit featuring intrepid detectives Hawthorne and Horowitz.

When Ex-Detective Inspector Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, author Anthony Horowitz, are invited to an exclusive literary festival on Alderney, an idyllic island off the south coast of England, they don¡¯t expect to find themselves in the middle of murder investigation¡ªor to be trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a remote place with a murky, haunted past.

Arriving on Alderney, Hawthorne and Horowitz soon meet the festival¡¯s other guests¡ªan eccentric gathering that includes a bestselling children¡¯s author, a French poet, a TV chef turned cookbook author, a blind psychic, and a war historian¡ªalong with a group of ornery locals embroiled in an escalating feud over a disruptive power line.

When a local grandee is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Hawthorne and Horowitz become embroiled in the case. The island is locked down, no one is allowed on or off, and it soon becomes horribly clear that a murderer lurks in their midst. But who?

Both a brilliant satire on the world of books and writers and an immensely enjoyable locked-room mystery, A Line to Kill is a triumph¡ªa riddle of a story full of brilliant misdirection, beautifully set-out clues, and diabolically clever denouements.]]>

Now on the run from a family that wants him dead, he turns to the only one who will believe him: Wil. <![CDATA[The Camelot Shadow (Camelot Shadow, #1)]]> 24020362 "A chance to save her. Improbably, impossibly, inconceivably."

Lord Alfred Fitzwilliam spends each day in much the same way: caring for his terminally ill wife and trying to lose himself in the dusty tomes that fill his library. Everything changes when he receives a visit from a man representing a clandestine organization operating with the backing of Queen Victoria herself. The group seeks his aid in finding an Arthurian artifact that, legend holds, can cure its bearer of any wound or disease.

Skeptical but desperate to help his wife, Alfred is convinced that the fabled item might actually exist after witnessing a seemingly impossible display of power by the organization's leader, James Nigel. He decides to pursue the treasure, accompanied by an eccentric scholar, a deadly druid, and his best friend, a sardonic bookseller who is far more than he seems. As he follows an arcane trail of clues from the gas-lit streets of London to the wilds of Scotland and deep into ancient catacombs in Italy, Alfred becomes enmeshed in a web of hidden agendas, secret societies, and ancient enchantments. Along the way, he learns a dark secret about Nigel's past¡ªand the true power of the artifact he seeks.

Steeped in a compelling mythology and filled with unexpected twists, The Camelot Shadow will leave readers stunned, breathless, and wrestling with an impossible question: what do you do with an object that has the power to both save the world and destroy it?
