Dit boek heb ik begin jaren '80 gelezen, in het Nederlands,  en ik werd er zó door gegrepen dat ik, lezend bij de bushalte, gewoon de bus liet wegrijden. Ik was benieuwd of ik het nog steeds zo pakkend zou vinden, en tot op zekere hoogte ja. Ook wel een beetje goedkoopjes hoor, hoog Danielle Steel-gehalte, maar als smulboek toch 4 sterren.

En ze leefden nog lang en gelukkig ... heerlijk hoor, door naar deel 2.

Stef heeft meegedaan aan een onderzoek naar gifgas, en omdat er gas ontsnapt is terwijl hij aanwezig was, is zijn gezondheid erg aangetast. Om te kuren is hij naar de Rivièra gekomen.
Samen delen ze hun zorgen, maar ook hun interesses en gevoelens.
Als het slechter gaat met Stef, omdat hij aan de Rivièra niet aan zijn dieet kan voldoen, biedt Lieke aan om voor hem te koken. Helaas heeft dat niet het gewenste resultaat, en vertrekt Stef naar een kuuroord in Menton, waar een nieuwe behandeling hem waarschijnlijk wèl kan helpen.
Opnieuw is Lieke alleen, maar nu heeft ze Jonas wel, om voor te zorgen.

Het boek is een aanklacht tegen hoe we omgaan met de natuur, en dan vooral met de oerbossen. Ik zal niet verklappen welke rol dat gaat spelen voor alle personages, want dat gedeelte van het boek is echt spannend. Ik heb een tijd geleden geprobeerd het boek van Peter Wohlleben te lezen, en kon er totaal nix mee. Nu snap ik wel waarom. Of, zoals Adam het formuleert: The best arguments in the world won’t change a person’s mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.
Toen ik er wat omheen ging lezen, leerde ik dat Patricia Westerford is gebaseerd op een bestaande bos/boomwetenschapper: .

Best interessant maar ook een beetje saai (wat helemaal niet erg is voor een in-slaap-val-boek). De schrijver moet vooral héél veel oude geschriften en reisverslagen hebben doorgeploegd. Ik had wel meer willen horen over hóe er dan gereisd werd, hoe vanzelfsprekend het was dat iedereen maar te paard ging, hoe ze al die bagage meenamen enzo.

Erg leuk boek dat je van zuid naar noord langs de Nijl voert, met overal heel verschillende verhalen over zowel geschiedenis en archeologie als meer moderne ontwikkelingen, zoals stuwdammen en nieuwbouw. Het eindigt in Cairo, en ik zag het opeens weer helemaal voor me. Genieten!

First published in 1903, John Meade Falkner's The Nebuly Coat has drawn praise from writers as diverse as Thomas Hardy, Graham Greene, E. M. Forster, John Betjeman, Henry Newboldt, and A. N. Wilson; while Lady Violet Bonham Carter, visiting a munitions works in 1915, fell into conversation with one of the directors, with whom she began discussing books. He soon finds himself, rather unwillingly, caught up in the current of Cullerne life, and hears rumours about a mystery surrounding the claim to the title of Lord Blandamer, whose family vault is sited in Cullerne Minster, and whose arms—the Nebuly Coat—adorn the Minster's great transept window. When the new Lord Blandamer arrives, promising to pay all the costs of the restoration, the inhabitants rejoice—all except Westray, who suspects that the new Lord is not what he seems, and the gone-to-seed organist, Sharnall, who seems close to sovling the mystery of the Blandamer inheritance.

Ik herinnerde mij dit als een fantastisch boek, en jammergenoeg heb ik dat er niet in teruggevonden.

Dat van Eva, de Nederlandse onderzoeker die met een inderhaast opgetuigde Belgisch-Congolese archeologische expeditie de vindplaats van de munt gaat onderzoeken. En dat van Xiao Wei, die hoopt dat de munt hem in staat stelt terug te keren naar China en zijn verloofde.
Maar de munt laat zich door niemand gebruiken, het is alsof die zijn eigen plan trekt.

Daarna had ik zin in een Nederlands boek. Eerst probeerde ik De Stenen Goden van Jeroen Windmeijer, dat leek me lekker spannend en interessant. Maar de stijl was zo jongensboekachtig dat ik het niet lezen kon. De Engel van Mesopotamië leek me ook mooi, maar algauw verzandde ik in dialogen die doorzakten van de infodump.

Van Munt had ik al wat goede recensies gelezen en het gegeven sprak me aan.
De stijl was in elk geval prima, en het verhaal zoog me naar binnen. Het sloot ook mooi aan bij mijn huidige in-slaap-val-luisterboek The Dawn of Everything, waaruit blijkt hoe veel van wat 'we' altijd aannamen over 'de' geschiedenis helemaal niet blijkt te kloppen. In Munt draait het om een graf waar een munt gevonden wordt op een plek en uit een tijd waarvan tot dan toe werd aangenomen dat er helemaal geen munten waren.
Dat is een van de vele vragen / kwesties die het boek opwerpt: moeten witte archeologen nu aan zwarte mensen hun geschiedenis aanreiken? Terwijl de oorspronkelijke bevolking totaal anders omgaat met dingen als tijd en geschiedenis.

Het boek heeft drie hoofdpersonen: Plamedi �� ex-kindsoldaat, nu reisleider met een droom om filmmaker te worden, Xiao Wei, de Chinees die na zijn studie tegen zijn zin in Congo werkt als inkoper van edele metalen en bij wie de munt voor het eerst te koop wordt aangeboden, en Eva Hendriks die als palynoloog (pollen-onderzoeker) gaat deelnemen aan de Belgische expeditie naar het graf met de munt.

Er wordt steeds met het tijdsbesef van lezer en personages gespeeld, sommige hoofdstukken geven een scène uit het verleden, in andere zijn we weer in real time bij de gebeurtenissen aanwezig. "In een film doet het er niet toe in welke volgorde dingen gebeuren. Je kunt ze later altijd verplaatsen. Je kunt op elk moment kiezen hoe de dingen gebeuren en waarom." (p73)

De stukken over het verleden van Plamedi doen denken aan Heart of Darkness. The Horror. Hij is het personage dat de grootste ontwikkeling doormaakt. Maar ook Eva komt tot nieuwe inzichten, ondanks de gruwelen voelt ze zich meer dan ooit verbonden met het woud. En Xiao Wei? Bij hem begint het verhaal van de munt opnieuw, en is daarmee een echo van de tijdsbeleving van het Pygmeeënvolk, de Efe.

Geweldig interessant om te lezen, af en toe wat té gedetailleerd over de (soms heel vervelende) bijkomstigheden in het 'wetenschappelijke veld.' Ongelooflijk hoe heldhaftig die vrouwen diverse reizen naar niet alleen het Sinaïklooster maar ook andere plaatsen in het Midden-Oosten maakten, en de studies die ze verrichtten naar de diverse talen waarin de oudste bijbelse geschriften zijn gevonden.
